COAL MINE PROPOSAL

Raven rejected

Company can re-submit to enviro assessment office JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office announced Thursday it rejected the application for Compliance Energy’s proposed Raven Coal Mine near Buckley Bay. In a letter to Compliance president and CEO John Tapics, the BCEAO said “the application does not contain the required information and (the BCEAO) has decided not to accept the application for detailed review.” The BCEAO also released a 114-page document “that identifies the major information requirements that EAO considers not to have been adequately addressed . . . should Compliance wish to revise and resubmit its application to EAO for evaluation . . . we request that Compliance first incorporate into the application the information identified (in that 114-page document).” The NEWS could not reach anyone at Compliance for comment Friday afternoon. The Western Wilderness Committee has been vocal in its opposition to the mine throughout the assessment process. “The Environmental Assessment Office has acknowledged the serious gaps in information in this application and sent the company back to the drawing board,” said Torrance Coste, the WWC’s Vancouver Island Campaigner. “The decision serves to highlight this company’s utter lack of commitment to the local communities, First Nations and our shared environment, and is just another indication that this mine doesn’t belong on Vancouver Island.”

Voting statistics look familiar JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Much was different in 2009 when Parksville Qualicum Beach voters cast ballots in the last provincial election prior to the odds-defying win by the B.C. Liberals last week. Gordon Campbell led the Liberals into the 2009 election and it was Carole James with the NDP. Locally that year, Ron Cantelon was looking for his second term as a

B.C. Liberal, and Leanne Salter carried the NDP banner. Despite those differences in names on the ballots and in their leaders’ offices, the numbers from last Tuesday’s election are surprisingly similar to those in 2009. Cantelon won the Parksville Qualicum constituency for the Liberals in 2009 with 13,265 votes, which worked out to 51 per cent of all ballots cast. Last week, Liberal Michelle Stilwell won with 13,431, 50 per See MORE THAN, page A4 cent of all votes cast.

PARKSVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT SURVEY

Excellent service from FD

‘Fighting of fires is a small part of what they do’ — mayor AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

A new survey suggest Parksville residents are pretty happy with their fire department. Though the department had hoped for a larger response, they are happy with the level of satisfaction and thoughtful responses from 69 residents of the Parksville Fire Protection Area who responded online in February and March. The response rate gives it a 15 per cent margin of error. Of the responses, 78 per cent found the service to be “excellent or very good,” and 86 per cent said firefighters were courteous and helpful. “They have a lot of support within the community and it’s important to get a sense of where we stand,” said mayor Chris Burger, who

added that having the department operate at a professional standard is key to recruiting and retaining volunteers. “The actual fighting of fires is a small part of what they do,” he said, pointing to all of the community education, safety inspections and other issues they deal with. In a news release, the city said the responses indicated a need for more information on the department’s activities — particularly evident in the responses to a question about what incidents to which the fire department responds. “We appreciate the time residents took to provide their comments and suggestions and the input will be considered as part of the department’s strategic planning review,” said fire chief Doug Banks. Salter garnered 9,803 votes for the NDP here in 2009, 38 per cent of the vote. Barry Avis received 9,911 votes — 37 per cent — last week for the NDP. Provincially, voter turnout was a record-low 51 per cent in 2009, while preliminary numbers indicated a 52 per cent turnout for the May 14, 2013 election. In Parksville Qualicum Beach in 2009, 63.8 per cent of 40,339 eligible voters cast a ballot. Last week in this constituency, 63.3 per cent of 42,280 eligible voters marked a ballot. There was once statistic that looked a little different from 2009-2013. In 2009 in Parksville Qualicum, 5,865 people (14.5 per cent of eligible voters) chose to exercise their franchise at advance polls. That number jumped to 7,911 (18.7 per cent) in the election last week.

You likely won’t see Nick Peters standing outside a polling booth with a protest sign in his hands any time soon. You might, however, find his name on the ballot inside one day. Peters, along with friend Brian Hannay, has picketed polling places in the last federal election and the latest municipal vote. His message? He wanted to be able to vote. That wasn’t possible in the last two elections, because both Peters and Hannay were too young to vote. That changed this week, when both Parksville residents exercised their franchise for the first time. “I found it really annoying to hear the politicians talking about how youths don’t vote, because I very much wanted to vote,” Peters said. “People said I have no life experience, but I work full time, I go to school and I pay taxes. I am a Canadian citizen and I was raised right here.” With his 18th birthday safely behind him, Peters took the opportunity for early voting, casting his ballot at the same Baptist church he picketed during the federal election on the second day the advance polls were open. “It was a bit weird, he said. “I walked in there and the person asked if I was actually old enough. They looked at me like they had never seen a teenager before.” Regardless, he found the experience

of voting to be uplifting. “It was nice,” he said. “I feel like I actually sent a message.” He said there’s no doubt he will be

Big fly-in scheduled for July 13 NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

There may not be an Airport Appreciation Day event in Qualicum Beach this year but that doesn’t mean there’s no action on the runway. Qualicum Aeroclub spokesperson Fred Evoy said the semi-annual celebration of flight at the airport was supposed to take place this year, but an unfortunate mixup with the club’s Nanaimo counterpart meant it didn’t go ahead as planned.

“We held one two years ago, but the Nanaimo Flying Club also had one about a month apart, so we agreed we would alternate with them for manpower and financing and everything else,” Evoy said. “As a result, they were going to do it this year, but then we were talking to them in January and they said no, we’re not going to have one.” At that point however, Evoy said it was too late to begin planning for an event in Qualicum Beach.

“Unfortunately, we just didn’t think we could pull it off,” he said. Despite having no Airport Appreciation Day, Evoy said there will be no shortage of events at the airport, including a big fly-in on July 13. “We will bring pilots from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, Washington State and maybe some from the Interior,” he said. “There will be a pancake breakfast and a dinner and dance in the evening, featuring Big Twang Theory.”

While the survey found almost everyone is aware of the department and that it is a volunteer department, only 21 per cent had used the services including public education, burning complaints, gas leaks, building inspections and fire suppression. While 91 per cent said they are aware of the annual recruitment campaign, only 35 per cent have considered volunteering. The lowest responses came in the area of emergency preparedness where 54 per cent said they are prepared for a large scale emergency or disaster, only 66 per cent are aware of the community emergency program and just 57 per cent would like to see more public training from the department. Of the 13 respondents who operate a business in Parksville, eight feel their businesses are prepared for an emergency or disaster. “I don’t know how that compares to other communities,” Burger said. “We always want to see that higher but it’s good to see there’s some level of thinking about emergency preparation.” The responses indicated the best ways for the department to communicate with residents were local newspapers (77%), City and PVFD websites (57%), public education (31%), e-mail (28%) and other “social media” (28%). The fire protection area, estimated at 20,000 people, includes Parksville and parts of the Regional District of Nanaimo including San Pareil, Morningstar, Columbia Beach, French Creek, Fourneau Road and the Forever Green Estates. The Cancer Society office has closed and the number of canvassers for the annual April fundraising campaign was down sharply, but the final tally was close to last year’s, thanks to the generosity of local residents. Hugh Baker, the residential campaign coordinator for the area from Nanoose to Deep Bay, said the society found themselves 35 canvassers short of the number they had last year. “There are areas we didn’t even go to,” he said. “We could have used another 50 people, actually.”

However, he said residents proved to be particularly generous this year, which went a long way to making up for the deficiency of boots on the ground. “It was amazing,” Baker said. “One canvasser went out in Nanoose and got absolutely nothing, while another person went out around Qualicum Woods and got $1,300, so there was quite a range. The average was about $200.” In all, he said, the society tallied $42,000 in donations from the area, down only slightly from last year’s $44,000. “That’s staggering,” he said. “I think we had the best campaign on the Island.”

Principals on the move Acting superintendent says a number of factors affect staff changes at local schools LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

Eight administration employees with the local district have been reassigned to new positions as of August this year. Acting superintendent Rollie Koop said that administrative moves can vary quite widely from year to year and are based on a number of factors including retirement, addition or reduction in administrative positions , succession planning and specific district or school needs. The NEWS inquired whether Darren Freeman, principal of Qualicum Beach Elementary School would be returning to his position following his leave of absence. Koop responded

that no change has taken place in his assignment. The reassignments are: Bobbi Coleman will become principal of Errington Elementary School Jeff Temple will become principal of False Bay School while retaining his responsibility as principal of the CEAP program. Lori Marshall will become vice principal of Oceanside Middle School. Kevin McKee will become vice principal of Springwood Middle School. Don Bold will become vice principal of Kwalicum Secondary School. Tandy Gunn will become vice principal of Ballenas Secondary School. John Williams will be reassigned as vice principal of Ballenas Secondary School. Rudy Terpstra will be appointed as principal of Ballenas Secondary School.

Barry’s base?

W

hile this election was clearly about the provincial stage, one would have thought Barry Avis would have done better in his hometown. We’re not interested in kicking anyone while he’s down, but after an hour at the electoral office pouring over ballot-box-by-ballotbox results, the numbers provided some mild shock. On election night after it was clear he was beaten soundly by Liberal Michele Stilwell, Avis told our reporter he will consider running for his old seat on Qualicum Beach council in November of 2014. He had time for that conversation, and we are grateful, but it’s unfortunate he did not have the time or the courtesy to call Stilwell to congratulate her on election night. Municipal elections come from an entirely different kettle of fish than their provincial or federal cousins, but there’s no doubt Avis will be taking notice of the numbers from Qualicum Beach last Tuesday. Constituency-wide, Stilwell won with 50 per cent of the votes. In Qualicum Beach, Stilwell had 52 per cent of the vote. Constituency-wide, Avis garnered 37 per cent of the vote. In Qualicum Beach it was 35 per cent. That’s right, in the part of the constituency where everyone could have safely guessed Avis support would be strong, it was actually worse than the rest of the region. We looked at the results from all 34 ballot boxes collected in Qualicum Beach, including four from advance polls. There was a total of 6,202 votes cast. Stilwell earned 3,227 votes (52 per cent), Avis 2,183 (35 per cent) and B.C. Conservative David Coupland 792 (13 per cent, the same as he garnered constituency-wide). The results from the votes collected at The Gardens, where Stilwell did not attend an all-candidates forum? Stilwell 52 votes, Avis 33, Coupland 21. Not all the news is bad for Avis, however. If Lasqueti Island ever incorporates and needs to elect a mayor and council, Avis should consider relocation to the idyllic oasis off our coast. He hammered Stilwell there, 170 votes to 20. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Hear botH sides I just read the couple of letters published in today’s paper (Thursday), including Neil Horner’s column (‘Have a cry and shake it off’). I don’t usually write letters to the editor, but I am using this format to communicate to respond to letter writers who, it seems, often do not rely on fact. A new report regarding the open public hearing held May 6 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre could have read like this: Large turnout — over 180 residents, many against various aspects of the Clarion, a number in favour of the project for economic reasons, most armed with incorrect information and all but 30 or so left before the debate, clarification of facts and healthy debate occurred. I respect the right of the electorate to express their ideas and perspective, however I don’t respect those who listen to only one side of a debate and consider only information passed on for political popularity, and many don’t consider the view of creating opportunities for vibrancy for the entire community and the future generations. Last term, when the updated OCP was being created, there was a number of open houses and ideas brought forward, some of which were supported by those in attendance but never saw the light of day in the proposal presented to council, and more to the point council never had the opportunity to debate as the original “gang of three” refused to allow any debate. Led by Mayor Teunis Westbroek, with Coun. Barry Avis and Coun. Kent Becker in tow, refused to even second any amendments for discussion nor did they participate in any discussions for the benefit of the full gallery.

Quotable:

“I’m not going to be wearing rubber or anything.” carol pope see story page a14

Many of you were there, so can surely remember these occurrences. This council, of which I am proud to be an elected member, whether you agree or not with any or all of their opinions, holds very good debates in the public and when necessary “in camera.” We research, we talk, we debate and we listen, so in the end good decisions for the future health of all citizens of our community of Qualicum Beach can be made. So please stay as engaged as you are, it is needed, but please take the opportunity to listen and then make your judgments. Call or e-mail me anytime. Mary Brouilette Councillor, Town of Qualicum Beach

Holding your nose Since my first election in the 1960s, I have voted for the B.C. NDP. At times I have been the nameless, faceless campaign worker for more than one NDP candidate. When the upheaval and removal of Carole James as leader took place I was furious. This opinion was vented through letters to Jenny Kwan and Leonard Krog stating my displeasure. The response? E-mail junk mail for a year. No personal response at all. If this was a complaint to a business and no response was received, I would boycott said business. That is what happened on a large scale this election. The NDP was boycotted. I felt cheated in the 2013 BC election. For the first time, I felt that I had no one to vote for. Adrian Dix with his own baggage or Christy Clark, Gordy Campbell’s right-hand person, who will abandon the environment and attempt to balance the budget on the

Vinegar needed Since negative comments about the NDP campaign can’t do any damage now, I feel compelled to point out that the Adrian Dix NDP campaign was fought on the same field and with the same rules as those set by the Liberals. In the end, the two parties were sounding more and more alike, each committed to the holy grail of economic development and some vaguely promised future jobs that go with it. If only the NDP had put some vinegar in their campaign instead of that wishy-washy “Change, one practical step at a time.” If they had gone back beyond the slippery policies of the Glen Clark regime — where Dix cut his political teeth — all the way to the Barrett regime, they would have put forth some real change like: Hansard and Question Period, Agricultural Land Reserve, ICBC, Community Resource Boards, progressive and democratic labour relations changes, funded day care, no tankers — all things that progressive citizens stand for. Also, if John Horgan and Dix had listened to their own supporters, they would have spoken out on Kinder Morgan at the same time as they did on Northern Gateway, avoiding the needless flip-flop charge.

letters FArwinds Fuss

What will come to be known as “The Fuss In Fairwinds” (‘Fairwinds Kerfuffle’, The NEWS, May 14) was really nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. The non-event was a panicked, knee jerk-reaction prompted by comments from bcIMC, the company holding ownership of the Schooner Cove/Fairwinds properties and comments from mid-level Bentall/Kennedy functionaries. The Fairwinds meeting on May 9 was not open to Nanoose Bay residents. Although a spokesperson roostered praises for the developer and ranted against the due process of local government, Fairwindians do not speak for the community beyond Fairwinds and this mega project is not popular with, nor does it have the support of, the community at large. It’s no mystery why the approval process for such massive development proposals is proceeding at the current pace. This is what happens when a 1960s mentality creates an urban containment zone where previously existed only birds, bees, beavers and babbling brooks. This is what happens when an urban development is forced into the furthest reaches of a rural community. Prolonged scrutiny prior to approv-

devil we know

al is what happens when you attempt to service a small city with roads originally designed for access to resource extraction, farming, hunting, recreational pursuits, a dynamite factory and a NATO base. This is what happens when transportation infrastructure must snake its way through wetlands, riparian zones, sensitive ecosystems and unstable terrain. The history of Fairwinds is the chronicle of potable water deficits. There has never been sufficient water to slake the thirst of the climate refugees who migrate to this area. The Nanoose Bay community has been subsidizing development servicing for decades and now the entire Oceanside region is being forced to support this development with expanded AWS & ERWS capacity. Due diligence and justifiable concern for optics and public perception to avoid conflict of interest is what happens when a proposal with potential for adverse impact on the natural and social environment is being vetted by public sector employees who have vested interest in the pension funds managed by bcIMC. Given the state of golf course communities worldwide, perhaps both parties have made bad decisions.

I am truly baffled and bewildered by the Liberal majority win. How people could return to power a government that has battered and betrayed them so blatantly and repeatedly will always be a mystery. The folks who produce the polls, the media, the general population and, obviously, the NDP, were fooled as well and that certainly worked to the advantage of the incumbents. Adrian Dix placed his trust in the polls — so much so that he chose not to utilize the facts at his disposal: the long litany of corruption, deception and dishonesty gave him lots of ammunition to go on the attack but, to my amazement, he decided not to. Perhaps the pollsters never asked who the “Hi” citizens (hippies, hillbillies and hypocrites) who they were going to vote for? I hope they never legalize the “B.C. Bud” I’ve heard about as it can obviously erase a decade of memories. Be careful of what you ask for because sometimes you get what you want — time and time again and therefore, you deserve it. Cue the music maestro — they’ve chosen to dance again with the devil they know all too well.

But the most disheartening news on the snack front has to come from Wonton Foods, a New York company that happens to manufacture most of the fortune cookies in the world. And Wonton Food, alas, has been bitten by the Political Correctness bug. It seems the company has been receiving complaints from consumers about the ‘romantic messages’ found in their fortune cookies. You know — messages like ‘One who admires you greatly is hidden before your eyes’? Well, some consumers (clearly people without actual lives) have deemed such messages ‘offensive’ and ‘sexist’. Wonton Food is bowing to the public pressure and replacing such sentiments with treacly, Happy Face pronouncements like “You make every day special”. Gag me with a wonton soup spoon.

A recital this Sunday in Parksville will celebrate Mozart, one of the most prolific and influential composers of the classical era. Vancouver Island Opera (VIO) is holding the program called The Genius of Mozart which will culminate with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.9. This will be performed by accomplished pianist Nikolai Maloff and a string quartet led by violinist and concertmaster of the Vancouver Island Symphony, Calvin Dyck. The famous pianist Alfred Brendel called the concerto “One of the greatest wonders of the world.” Artist director with VIO Tatiana Vasilieva said that although organizers were not able to afford an entire orchestra for the show, the quartet does an incredible job of filling the room with music. “It is done so well that it’s almost not noticeable, [that there isn’t an entire orchestra], especially for the small place we are performing.” Dyck has been the concertmaster for VIS since 2000 and also directs the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra. He is a teacher, producer, conductor and adjudicator and last year was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to the community. He has performed around the world, in over 15 countries, and currently lives in Abbotsford. Dyck will be performing with Rick Dorfer, also on violin, Manti Poon on viola and Joel Stobbe on cello. Maloff has won many piano competitions over the years, and performed around the world. He holds a masters degree from the Moscow State Conservatory in Russia and a doctoral degree from the University of British Columbia. Local soprano Sky Donald will also be performing at the recital singing a Mozart concert aria and several operatic arias. Donald recently appeared in Echo Player’s HMS Pinafore as Buttercup, among other local solo performances. “She is a very, very good soprano and she’s becoming much more well known,” said Vasilieva. Donald will be accompanied by Maloff and there will also be violin and piano duets at the show. The recital happens May 26 at 3 p.m. at the McMillan Arts Centre Gallery, located at 133 McMillan Street in Parksville. Tickets are $20 at the door. Guests are encouraged to come at 2:15 in order to secure a seat. VIO will be presenting the opera Hansel and Gretel October 5 and 6 at Knox United Church in Parksville. Teaching art from the heart Free art program for kids being offered by NEWS staffer Craig NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

Leigh Craig gets a great deal of satisfaction in expressing her creativity in her role as an artist and a graphic designer with The NEWS, but she wanted to share her talents and give something back. That’s why she decided to volunteer to put on an Art in the Park program for children. The program is held at the picnic shelter in Parksville’s Community Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays during May. “The NEWS and I thought it would be a good idea to give back to the community,” Craig said. “We’ve had a great community response because there’s not a whole lot available for the young tots to do.” That has changed, at least for the month of May, while the program lasts.

“Last week we made paper dinosaurs and masks and this week we plan to make garden art — wire sculptures and garden markers, ducks and sheep, pretty little things to put in the garden,” she said. Craig is no newcomer to teaching the little ones about art, having worked in the past with the Oceanside Community Arts Council and working with The Arrowsmith Community Enhancement Society (ACES), running art classes at the French Creek Community School. “I have many volumes of art programs available,” she said. There are two versions of Art in the Park, with the tots slated for lunch time on Tuesdays and the older children up to age 14, scheduled for Thursday evenings from 6-7 p.m. For more information on this free program, contact Craig at 250-905-0021.

Blues singer and former resident returns to Europe LISSA ALEXANDER

Layla Zoe is back on the road. The international blues sensation and former Qualicum Beach resident was out with a back injury and surgery for over six months, but she returned to Montreal last month and is now in Belgium performing her first show back. “I just booked the one show, it’s one of the shows that was cancelled before, but it’s a venue that we know and the people are extremely supportive there so that’s a good place to start.” Zoe experienced back pain while touring last year and while visiting home at Christmas time she collapsed in pain and had to go to the emergency room at the Nanaimo Hospital. She went for surgery to have the disc removed in February of this year, and the disc, she was told, was in pieces. The pain continued as she committed to trying to walk a little bit every day, but Layla is actually grateful for the experience, she said. “I feel extremely grateful because I appreciate more things in my life,” she said. “When you

can’t walk and you finally have to learn to slow down and let go of things that are extremely important to you, you kind of get in touch with what’s really important.” Zoe said the experience allowed her to focus on herself and her body and she’s come out with a much more relaxed attitude and feels like she is better prepared to deal with stress and anything else that arises. Zoe had to cancel shows in Canada and Europe and postpone the recording of her new album in Germany due to her injury. Now back at work, she will return to Germany this month to record her seventh album with the independent record label Cable Car Records, which will be released in September or October of this year. In July she’ll jump back into her full time touring schedule with shows in Poland, a number of festivals in France, and she’ll tour Germany and Switzerland with the new album when it’s released. For more on Layla Zoe visit her website www.layla.ca.

eer tasting played a big role in retired brew master and Fairwinds resident Douglas Babcook’s

career. He created the legendary Baderbrau beer through countless tasting during tours in Europe. Two decades working at Stroh Brewing Company helped, too. He started at Stroh as a brew master in 1969 after successfully completing the Institute of Brewing exams for the Master Brewer designation. This involved several years as an apprentice, assistant and finally, brew master at Dow Brewery in Montreal, one of the Canadian Breweries chain, composed of Dow Brewery, Carling Brewery and O’Keefe Brewing Co. He then spent six months at the American Brewers Academy in New York. The neatly dressed, naval ex-

lieutenant argued that the key to creating a great beer is not from a recipe, but knowledge and experimentation. “A good cook doesn’t follow a recipe. You modify it, change it, and do what it takes to make it taste better to your liking,” said Babcook. The 85-year-old believes beer tasting helped identify different flavours and combinations. “Beer production is more complex than making wine,” said Babcook. It involves natural ingredients that change from year to year. He follows the German Purity Law, a method of beer production that restricts the brewer from using any preservatives other than malt, hops, yeast, and water. Babcook started his own consulting business after leaving Stroh in the late 1980s. He wanted to use his knowledge to help other breweries create better tasting beers. “Consulting allowed me to

travel the world. I spent three years in Russia and visited over forty breweries in the country,” said Babcook. He also traveled to Paraguay, Sri Lanka, India and China. He now resides in Fairwinds, beckoned by the ocean 12 years ago. In 1989, when Babcook was hired as a consultant with Pavichevich Brewing Company in Chicago, he and the owner, Ken Pavichevich, travelled to Europe to taste beers. On their third beer tasting tour, Babcook decided the best beers in the world were in the Czech Republic. Sitting in 111 Beers, a dimly-lit, pub-style tavern in Munich, he told Pavichevich they would create a combination of the Czech Pilsner and Budweiser Budvar. Babcook filled an empty stein with fifty percent of each of the two draft beers, and the legendary Baderbrau was born. It was a smooth, Czech-style Pilsner that followed the German Purity Law.

Dividend Reinvestment Plans: a get rich slowly scheme

RIPs may not be the most exciting investments around, but they are effective. Under a Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRIP) investors elect to use the cash that would be paid as a dividend to purchase additional shares of the underlying stock. The purchase of additional shares happens automatically when dividends are paid, resulting in several advantages over other methods of accumulating shares in a company: • The purchase of additional shares happens as soon as the dividend is paid. Automotive class works to restore classic BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor

Gary Hopkins of Gary’s Bistro would have been thrilled to see the latest project the students in one of the automotive technology programs at Kwalikum Secondary School (KSS) have taken on. Their restoration of a 1970 Triumph Spitfire is top notch according to technology instructor Rob Gibbs. The course to complete reconstruction on the burgundy sports car ended in January but Gibbs said his class had a few other automotive projects so they are not quite finished with the purple project. “We took on more than we could chew and ended up with two cars,” he said. He explained that both cars needed extensive work and the students are now completing the project on their own time because they want the Spitfire to be in the annual Father’s Day Show ‘n Shine car show in Qualicum Beach June 16. “We want to finish it for the Father’s Day show. The Seaside Cruisers have given us free entry and a great spot.” He acknowledged the incredible strides his students have made in the inaugural year of the classic car automotive co-op program at KSS and he is even more impressed with the camaraderie that he has witnessed. The KSS automotive program recently received a donation of $1,000 in Gary’s honour. The money was raised at a 1950s dance organized by the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association (QBDBA).

the town said in a news release. The report is specific to the town and in particular the areas that are lacking in conventional stormwater infrastructure. The Green Laneways project builds on experiences from other cities to develop a sustainable approach to stormwater management and urban landscaping in Qualicum Beach, said the release. “Drainage issues surround-

ing stormwater have been an on-going infrastructure challenge that has been a barrier to achieving some of the goals in the OCP,” said Luke Sales, the town’s director of planning. “We want to get this right for residents going forward and using the strategies outlined in the Green Laneways report will assist us towards this aim.” As part of the development

Kondors third straight championship

Qualicum Beach high school team takes Island championships and heads on to B.C.s JAMES CL ARKE sports@pqbnews.com

Kwalikum Secondary School’s golf team has claimed another Island championship, and the smiles on the faces of this year’s top six as they gathered around the hardware spoke volumes about the program and the connection forged on the links. It was the Kondors’ third straight Island title — three years ago they won the AAA Islands and the next year the AA, and last year’s was canceled because of the teachers’ strike. “Never. It never gets old, and it’s great to see these kids compete,” a chuffed KSS athletic director and team coach Butch Gayton confirmed Thursday when The NEWS caught up with him. Gayton is in his 14th year as a teacher/coach at KSS and his fourth season overseeing the school’s golf team, which continues to benefit from its connection with the Brent Morrison Golf Academy out of Pheasant Glen Golf Resort, site of Wednesday’s Island final. KSS has won the Island golf title five times in all over the years and clinched the AAA provincial title back in 1998. ON WEDNESDAY at ‘The Glen, the Kondors top four came in at 304 over 18 holes. Cole Morrison led the charge for KSS with a tournament-best even-par 72, and Santiago Bouyra was right behind at 74, with Gr. 9s Blair Stewart and Anthony Trozzo both coming in at 79. The Shawnigan Lake Stags grabbed second place with a 315, and the Raiders from Highlands third at 326. The top three teams advance to the AA provincial Championships slated for Arbutus Ridge

Kwalikum’s golf team, from left, Scott Austin, Anthony Trozzo, coach Butch Gayton, Cole Morrison, Santiago Bouyra, Blair Stewart, Masato Wilson, claimed its school’s third straight Island title in golf at ‘the Glen on Wednesday.

May 26-28. “It’s not our best scores of the year but it was certainly enough to get the job done,” Gayton said of this squad’s fourth tournament win in six outings this season, adding “real solid play by our top two, and the Gr 9s, they played really well too they just had one hole that hurt them with both carding triple bogey 7s (on par 4s).” A 1:30 p.m. shotgun start, the players have no way of knowing how the others are doing. “You just bear down and get at it.”

The course was in good shape after heavy rains on Monday. In high school team golf each team sends out five players with the top four scores counting. Austin and Santiago will be on the field for KSS at the B.C.’s, but the hard part of being a high school golf coach comes to light again for Gayton — who had as many as 11 on his team earlier in the season — today. “I’ve been putting it off and putting it off, at this point I still don’t know who it’s going to be — I’ve got three Grade

9s fighting for the final two spots in the B.C.s,” said the coach. “It’s a very hard decision and one that will have to be made Tuesday after the team practice round at Eaglecrest.” “Oh yeah — we sure are,” Austin, who carded three birdies on Wednesday, answered with a grin when asked if the Kondors are looking forward to the B.C.’s. GAME ON: The 18-team AA BC High School Golf Championships are slated for Arbutus Ridge May 26-28 and being hosted by Shawnigan Lake Secondary School.

Whaler girls through to B.C. championships JAMES CL ARKE sports@pqbnews.com

The Whalers are through to the BC High School AA Sr. Girls provincial soccer championships on the strength of a second place finish at this week’s Island finals. Winners of six of their last eight games, the local side kick started its playoff run May 6-7 on Saltspring Island by reeling off four impressive wins to claim the AA North Island title. At the NI’s, teacher/coach Larry Stefanek and his hard-charging young squad posted wins over Shawnigan Lake (1-0), Mark Isfeld (3-1), the host Scorpions (4-0), and trimmed the

NDSS Islanders 2-1 in the final. In that final the two teams were tied 1-1 at the half. Sophie Palmer scored for the Whalers in the first half off a breakaway, and Emily Robertson slotted home the winner midway through the second. “Four good wins in a row. Hard fought, we played really well in the smok’n heat — it was hot hot hot,” said coach Larry Stefanek. Back in action at the eight-team AA Island finals played out at Shawnigan Lake Monday and Tuesday, BSS opened with a big 2-1 win over the Brooks Bobcats from Powell River. The Whalers suffered a 3-0 loss

Monday afternoon, but bounced back Tuesday morning with their best game of the season, blasting the Blue Devils from St. Michael’s University School 8-2. Robertson and Brittany Britz both had hat tricks in that one, and Palmer struck for a pair. It was the team’s highest offensive output of the season. “Wow is right,” chuckled Stefanek, “we just smashed them. It was great — that was huge,” he said of the win, adding the girls “played incredible. They played so well, as you can imagine by the scoring line.” That win clinched them top spot in their pool which put them in the tour-

nament final (in which they came up on the short end of a hard-fought 1-nil final to the NDSS Islanders), but more importantly it punched their ticket to the provincials. “We had a few chances,” Stefanek said of the Island final, which was deadlocked in a scoreless tie at the half, adding “we hit the cross bar with about 10 minutes left and had another good opportunity a couple minutes later, but just couldn’t convert, couldn’t quite pull it off, but it was a real good game.” The Islanders scored the game winner off a free kick midway through the second half.
