Chilliwack growth not ‘by fluke,’ says mayor Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz offered a rosy picture of Chilliwack in her ‘State of the City’ talk Thursday at a Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce luncheon in the Best Western Rainbow Country Inn. The small Chamber gathering was reminded when economists were predicting the economy “would be very grim” in the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008. “What they told us was that it would take until the summer of 2012 to recover,” Gaetz said. “But what we didn’t know was that

Chilliwack was doing very well in this regard.” Chilliwack is one of the top eight cities singled out for growth by the Conference Board of Canada recently. The Mayor said she was happy to share details from the CBOC’s Mid-sized Cities Outlook for 2013, which leaned on Statistics Canada numbers. It revealed Chilliwack as a fast-growing city, with job growth greater or equal to three per cent, and the GDP grew by an average of more than six per cent in the period between 2005 and 2012. “These things don’t happen by fluke, nor do they happen by the wisdom of one person,” she said. She mapped out the ways the

city works to create a climate for local business to flourish, from low property taxes and inexpensive business multiples, to the work done by CEPCO to bring new businesses to town. Downtown was described as being in “an awkward phase right now” with its array of closed storefronts and fresh demolition sites. Gaetz assured the audience that good things are happening downtown nonetheless. “There are parts of it that don’t look very good because we’re starting to take buildings down and get the land ready for development,” she said. Gaetz took on the critics, too. “Some people in our community have referred to it as missing teeth in the downtown, and I have a reply to that. “Have you never seen a young, gangly kid with missing teeth? The family whose Rosedale home was destroyed by fire last week is overwhelmed by the kindness they’ve been shown, and they want to pay it forward. The blaze, which tore through their twostorey home late last Sunday evening, left nothing. But fortunately, said Vicki Sortwell, it didn’t take any lives, nor any of the purebred retrievers that are normally raised on the property. Sortwell wasn’t home when the fire broke out. She had taken her son-in-law, who was enjoying a rare day off from kidney dialysis – to a movie. Paul Connelly is currently awaiting a transplant – surgery Sortwell frankly says the 31-year-old may not survive. When they returned to the car after the movie, Sortwell checked her phone. Seeing seven missed calls from the same private number, she thought the news was good. “I though it was the transplant coming in.” It wasn’t. It was the Chilliwack RCMP telling her their home was on fire. Warned about the extent of the damage, Sortwell was still unprepared for what she saw. ‘Gold-plated’ pensions a balm for election losers Jeff Nagel Black Press

A long list of departing MLAs – both Liberals and New Democrats – are now in line for lucrative pensions, whether they retired voluntarily or were defeated at the polls. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates the total payouts to MLAs who didn’t win or seek re-election could top $26 million. The government injects $4 for every dollar politicians

contribute, and the resulting pensions are also inflation adjusted. “The MLA pension payout ATM is spitting out cash at a rate taxpayers can only dream of,” CTF B.C. director Jordan Bateman said. “A dozen former MLAs will soon join the million-dollar pension club – while most of us are scraping together every nickel we can find for our own retirements.” Departing NDP MLAs in the Lower Mainland and their estimated payouts

to age 80 include: SurreyFleetwood NDP MLA Jagrup Brar ($555,000), Delta North NDP MLA Guy Gentner ($500,000), CoquitlamMaillardville’s Diane Thorne ($461,000) and Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MLA Michael Sather ($490,000). Several others, including Chilliwack-Hope byelection winner Gwen O’Mahony, get nothing because they have less than the six years of service required to qualify. Outgoing Liberal MLAs include: Gordon Campbell in

Vancouver-Point Grey ($1.7 million), Colin Hansen in Vancouver-Quilchena ($1.54 million), Barry Penner in Chilliwack-Hope ($1.35 million), Kevin Falcon in SurreyCloverdale ($1.09 million), Randy Hawes in AbbotsfordMission ($847,000), Harry Bloy in Burnaby-Lougheed ($720,000), Chilliwack’s John Les ($835,000), Surrey-Tynehead’s Dave Hayer ($824,000) and Joan McIntyre in West VancouverSea to Sky ($568,000). Defeated Abbotsford inde-

pendent John Van Dongen, who served for years as a B.C. Liberal, exits with a pension valued at $1.48 million. First-year payouts range from $30,000 to as much as $98,000 in Campbell’s case. Exiting MLAs also get up to 15 months of severance at the $101,859 MLA annual salary and includes a top-up if the politician takes a job at less than six figures. They’re also eligible for up to $9,000 in “training” funds. “Not only do these MLAs receive overly generous

pensions, they get a severance package and training money,” Bateman said. “Taxpayers are on the hook for millions just to transition these politicians back to the real world.” He noted the B.C. Liberals ran against “gold-plated” pensions in 1996 and then NDP premier Glen Clark brought in a fairer, dollar-for-dollar system. But the Liberals in 2007 brought back ultra-generous pensions and let MLAs buy back missing years of service.

Fearlessly wading into the sticky topic of colonization in B.C., professors at the University of the Fraser Valley are offering a certificate on indigenous maps, films, rights and land claims starting next month. Much of the content of the three-course, month-long program will focus on the Lower Fraser Valley. It will cover the ways in which indigenous lands and resources were taken, and the ways in which indigenous people are reclaiming them. For instance, maps were a fundamental tool of colonial conquest, said Prof. Kenneth Brealey, a program instructor. The act of delineating reserve land on a map reinforced the idea that First Nations land is

only that bit, and not the rest of B.C. “That’s where maps really did their dirty work as far as colonization goes. It’s their ability to make visible and cement in a visual record the impression that these reserves are now Indian land, and that’s all Indian land has ever been, is these small patches that we have mapped out on the ground and in paper,” said Brealey. These sketches had power. “Maps in our culture have this at-a-glance authority. When we look at a map, we think that that is the real world,” said Brealey. Over the years, as magistrates and reserve commissioners looked at the maps, they eventually disregarded that native land used to be the whole of the Fraser Valley, B.C. and Canada. This was the first

tool that made it easy for settlers to claim non-reserve land as their own. But maps are also serving as a tool of empowerment to groups now fighting for control of their traditional lands. For example, people use maps to pinpoint resources that indigenous groups use, showing that traditional resources do not follow reserve land borders. Brealey is one of four instructors for the program, which is in its fourth year and has seen about 45 people pass through it since inception. Program instructor Prof. Hugh Brody will focus on how film has been used by settlers to depict indigenous people, while indigenous people themselves used film to document land use and First Nations heritage. Prof. David Schaepe and Naxaxalhts’i (Albert ‘Sonny’

McHalsie) will attempt to engage students in a debate about the best ways that Sto:lo people might seek a resolution to the “Indian land question,” said Brealey. Should it be the treaty process? Or litigation? Or an issue-specific reconciliation surrounding loss of resources? The course will also discuss divisions inherent in First Nations groups across the province. The certificate program will run from June 17 to July 12, eight hours per day, at the Sto:lo Nation’s Cultural Research Center in Sardis. It’s almost time to weigh in on what type of public transit service works best for Chilliwack ridership. Open house events are slated for this week in Chilliwack and Agassiz to map out reaction to the latest public transportation improvements being recommended for the system, being called the largest transit expansion in the history of the local system. City of Chilliwack, Fraser Valley Regional District and BC Transit are working to design “the kind of public transportation service that works best for you and your region,” according to the release about the open house events. BC Transit is hosting the Open Houses. Members of the welcome are invited to peruse the proposed options including extended service hours, added holiday service and expanded bus route coverage. Ridership is way up in the past year and one of the reasons is Route 1, the express up and down the Yale/Vedder Road corridor every 20 minutes. One of the ideas in the three-year plan is extending the popular Route 1 to the north and south, going as far as Menzies to better serve local school district needs, and down south to Tyson to serve the south side’s growing community, development and UFV. The Chilliwack share of the expansion costs has already been budgeted by city officials. BC Transit officials worked with the city’s transit advisory committee to address specific issues after riders offered comments and feedback during consultation sessions after the route changes were made last summer. Now they’re looking to extend evening and weekend and holiday service hours, making the schedule uniform from Monday to Saturday, and introducing stat holiday bus service at a Sunday level. Flower vender robbed by knifepoint

73-year man facing several charges after police car rammed

A roadside flower vendor was robbed at knifepoint Wednesday afternoon on the 6700 block of Evans Road. At 1:30 p.m. a southbound truck pulled over, and a man got out. He showed the knife and demanded money. The victim handed over the cash, and the robber escaped. The suspect is described as caucasian, between 18 and 20 years old, clean-shaven with short black hair. He’s approximately five-footnine with a medium build, and was wearing a purple jacket. He took off in a small light grey or brown pickup truck. “This is a commonly traveled roadway in Chilliwack,” said RCMP Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “We are canvassing for witnesses, hoping someone observed this vehicle and the suspect in the area.” Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

A driver who police say was drunk did himself no favours Wednesday night, allegedly using his pickup truck to ram into several RCMP vehicles. RCMP got a call at 6 p.m. that a white 1992 Dodge Dakota had already hit several parked cars as it weaved westbound on Chilliwack Central Road. They found truck and driver on Young Road, and tried to end things quietly. But the driver had other ideas, backing into their cars several times before they finally got him boxed in with nowhere to go. Seventy-three year old Stanley

Among them, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer and driving while drivers licence is suspended. “We are very fortunate that no member of the general public nor any of our officers were injured in this incident,” said Cpl. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is making all the right moves in addressing the issue of cyberbullying in Canada but local people want him to go further. Last week the prime minister and Vic Toews, minister of Public Safety, met with families whose children were victims of cyberbullying, including Carol Todd, the mother of Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd. The aim of the meeting was to discuss ways of ending online harassment and exploitation, which has become an epidemic with the rise of social media, with the further goal of addressing gaps in the Canadian Criminal Code related to cyberbullying. This comes as good news to many parents looking for the federal government to take a tougher stand against anonymous, threatening and demeaning comments made by children and adults in the online environment. Tightening legal loopholes in the Canadian Criminal Code is the only way get cyberstalkers and others to take notice because local efforts, such as bylaws prohibiting this kind of behaviour, can’t do the job. Port Coquitlam, for example, wanted to be the first city in B.C. to have an anti-bullying bylaw, but after a review of legal jurisprudence, concluded that only the Criminal Code should be used to address serious bullying behaviour. To that end, the Tri-Cities Family Court and Justice is looking for several amendments to the Criminal Code to ensure that it includes bullying by electronic means, assigns appropriate consequences and a restorative justice approach where appropriate. Carol Todd, who met with Harper and has been a strong advocate of awareness and tougher laws to prevent cyberbullying, also wants to see the federal government take action and will not let up her vigil until new laws are in place. The prime minister has been more than willing to listen and his Conservative government has a good record for coming down on the side of the victims. But a nuanced approach to this difficult issue is needed, and sooner, rather than later. ~ Black Press

Work now begins for new Liberal government Pollsters and pundits got one thing right last week. The election was the NDP’s to lose. They were polled as being 20 points ahead of the Liberals. But to the shock of almost everyone it all came crashing down Tuesday night when voters re-elected a Liberal majority government. It knocked the socks off everyone. But for all the pollsters, the only person who ultimately mattered was the voter at the ballot box. In those last few weeks, there were signs that the NDP had an agenda shifting away from what mattered most to voters – the economy. Adrian Dix wobbled on the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion; he was vague about carbon tax, and there was no clear direction on how he was going to pay for all the promises, reduce debt, and expand job opportunities. Earth Day flip flop on the pipeline expansion did little to instill confidence in his decision making abilities. Premier Christie Clark’s messaging focused on the economy and jobs. Those timeless steps generate jobs, meaningful family incomes that

allow people to pay their bills, save, plan a future, and entertain new opportunities. When push came to shove last Tuesday, there was not the appetite for change. With unfilled jobs out there in the marketplace, B.C. needs to build on that dynamic in both diversity and number. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, unfilled private sector jobs have remained steady at 2.5 per cent representing close to 300,000 full and part-time jobs “As the economy has improved and unemployment has come down, companies, particularly smaller companies, have struggled to fill open jobs,” said Ted Mallett, CFIB’s chief economist and vicepresident. “While unfilled jobs may seem harmless, they represent missed opportunity for business and the economy.”

A CFIB report said that businesses with fewer than 19 employees had the highest vacancy rate (4.2 per cent), while businesses with 500 or more employees had the lowest (1.6 per cent). Recently, the federal government introduced changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program that could make it even harder for smaller firms to find the staff they need. The Liberals are back for another term but Clark’s problems aren’t quite over. She lost her own seat in the election so a by-election is on the horizon. And the job of governing has now got to deliver a balanced economic climate that will yield job opportunities, growth and investment. With the HST and its benefits to investors gone, the re-instated PST tax base plus an increase in corporate income tax rates makes B.C. a lot less competitive. The Liberals

As much as the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline and the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline are inflammatory, Clark is going to have to come to grips with a decision on one or both. And quickly. Alberta will get its bitumen to market one way or another – east, south or north. If it comes west then the environmental factor must be dealt with head on. Meanwhile, clean green energy infrastructures must be fast-tracked. Delivering her victory speech, Clark quipped, “That was easy!” What lies ahead may be less so, but at least she’s got a mandate from the people to kickstart prosperity and make B.C. the go-to province.

Summer garden glory without the weeding and watering Summer can be tough on gardens. In what should be their glory days, many gardens suffer from neglect. Long weekends and summer vacations leave yards untended, while summer heat is an excuse for putting off chores. But it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s possible to have both a glorious well-maintained garden and time for fun in the sun by taking some smart gardening steps now. Here’s a quick list of pro-active steps to transform a yard or garden from needy-and-greedy to lean-and-green by reducing watering and weeding needs all season. • Choose better places for better plants - Many plant experts insist that 90 percent of garden problems would disappear if gardeners put the right plants in the right places. But, sometimes it’s the planting place itself that needs adjustment. For example, a hot, dry, exposed setting is brutal on most plant selections. Why not completely rethink a spot like this? To alter the heat-and-light dynamic, introduce a small shade tree to serve as the anchor of a new easy-care landscape bed. Add a supporting cast of drought-tolerant shrubs and perennials. With better places for better plants, long-term maintenance can be a breeze. • Whack weeding - Weeding consumes more time in the garden than anything else, except watering. Covering garden beds with a 3-inch layer of mulch will greatly reduce the need to weed and water, while making everything look tidy too. Mulch retains soil moisture and denies weed seeds the light they need to

sprout. Top off mulch with a sprinkling of a pre-emergent to stop weed seeds from growing in mulch and garden soil for up to three or four months. For a one-step solution that creates a six-month weed-fighting barrier, try a natural shredded-wood mulch with added pre-emergent weed preventers already mixed in. • Beef up the border patrol - Sharply-defined edges around garden beds add visual appeal to any property. They also make maintenance easier by creating a firm demarcation between beds and lawns to keep out invasive perennial weeds, including nasty creepers that can’t be prevented by other means. Dig a shallow 8-inch wide trench surrounding garden beds, then cover it with 3 inches of mulch; or install a barrier-style perimeter edging of metal, stone, rubber or wood. • Banish fainting spells - When it comes to water-retentive container plantings, think fewer and bigger. Don’t dot decks, doorways and patios with fussy little pots. Small containers look insignificant and dry out fast, subjecting parched plants to repeated bouts of stress from fainting spells. Larger containers allow for more dramatic plant groupings and plenty of healthy root room, plus retain important soil moisture.

• Try tick-tock watering - Gardens need less water than many think, thriving on as little as 1 inch of water per week whether it’s delivered by rain, drip irrigation, sprinklers or a hand-held hose. To save time watering all season and prepare a garden to get through extended dry spells, add programmable water timers to water spigots and hose systems. Even inexpensive timers can deliver water to suit particular plant and climate needs. Early morning watering is best. Midday sun can burn wet leaves. Evening watering can lead to plant ailments and mildew. Don’t spend the summer constantly weeding, watering and struggling to keep up with garden chores. Put your garden on a path to self-sufficiency. Then focus on fun in the sun, whether you’re on vacation or in your own backyard.

The two rooms most likely to cement or reject the sale or purchase of a house are the kitchen and bathroom. They are also the most expensive to renovate. Unlike every other room in the house, there is so much going on in these rooms, including plumbing which is sometimes quite complicated, electrical, tiling and drains, just to mention a few. So when planning a renovation you have to get it right because mistakes can be costly. Buyers know they can renovate most rooms with flooring and paint but bathrooms take renovation to a whole new level of expense and your potential buyer is doing sums in their head to figure out how much tearing out and renovating is going to cost on top of the purchase price as they tour your house. There are many choices to make these days, which each come with consequences. Among the options are oversize steam showers, bathtubs carved out of a single piece of rock, marble floors and walls, double sinks; the list goes on. Not always taken into consideration when planning the renovation of an older home is weight. Homes built in years gone by may not be structurally sound

It’s important to plan play areas for the kids! As you plan the arrangement of your yard, remember to include play areas for the kids. Offer your children a varied and stimulating environment, which will respond to all of their needs: running, climbing, jumping, swinging, exploring, crawling and rolling, throwing and catching, building and tinkering. John Friswell of CCI Renovations is an award-winning contractor who has many years of renovations under his belt and there is very little he hasn’t had to deal with when it comes to renovations. He cites a recent renovation as a great example of what homeowners need to know. “My clients have lived in this home for a number of years so they knew exactly what they wanted, in fact the instructions to my company and the designer were to create a spa bathroom you would find in a high-end elegant hotel, and that is exactly what we did,” Friswell says. “It helped that we used the original bathroom footprint, 13’ x 13’; about 160 square feet, and in this case we didn’t need to do any structural work, which is not always the case. We had to be creative with the linear drain in the shower but everything else was fine.” The original bathroom, although badly dated, had good ‘bones’ which is a great help when renovating. The size was right for the new design which again is a bonus; removing walls to increase the size puts the renovation into a whole new category. The bathroom isn’t huge, but instead just the right size to make the placement of each unit work. The rim-less steam shower is large but not enormous and tucked in the corner so there is some privacy, and the two vanities, his and hers, are placed so that each person literally has their own space including storage. The female spot, the larger of the two, has a mirror that slides up to reveal storage, plugs for hair dryers, etc. This allows the position-

ing of the lighting to make sense, and not having to install electrical outlets in the wall of marble is a brilliant touch. “The drawers and cupboards all have precisely designed organizers. The walls are marble as are the floors. The wall towel rack is heated which is a treat and the towel bars underneath the vanities avoids towels on the counter,” Friswell says. “We built in the tall linen tower for towels, etc. rather than storage under the vanities which is a more elegant approach as well as practical. We installed a window in the shower to provide light which we used to see years ago. Unlike then where there were always problems with rot and mildew, we didn’t use wood but marble so there will be no ongoing problems. The window was also important to help bounce light around the room.” There are lots of great design ideas in this bathroom and the desire of the clients for an elegant bathroom has certainly been achieved.

Manning Park faithful relieved about reprieve For the third year in a row, the Chilliwack Progress and Sardis secondary school’s Grade 10 honours english class have partnered up for the ‘Let’s Get Published’ project. Guided by teacher Brad Geary, students write sportsrelated articles, with the best ones getting published in the Progress sports section.

Sardis secondary Effortlessly flying down the ski hill, practically parallel to the ground he leaves a haze of powder settling in his tracks. Blue skies above and deep, dry snow below — this is a perfect day at Manning Park for a man who has skied here for over 20 years. Heading straight for the sign to Apple Bowl, his favourite run, Pierre Tremblay accelerates, then stops in perfect control at the very last second before hitting a tree. Parallel to him, moving in unison is his family, equally proficient on the slopes. His two children, rhythmically turning, are as meticulous as their father, each logging significant practice time on this hill. Tremblay first started skiing here in 1993 because of the hill’s dry snow and friendly atmosphere. Since then, he has been a patroller, ski and snowboard instructor and most of all an avid supporter of the Manning Park ski area. Malcolm and Leia have been hitting the slopes since the age of four and two. They are certainly no strangers to the mountain. Watching his family grow up, and his children become experts on these hills, Tremblay has an emotional connection few would understand. The Tremblays used to spend every Christmas at Manning, enjoying post skiday times with friends in the

lodge, bonfires and tubing. The family has made lifelong friends, people they continue to see each winter season — people they do not see away from the hill. Unfortunately, the mountain fell into financial turmoil the last few years, causing the bank to close it down early this season and leave the question of its re-opening up in the air. Tremblay believes that this situation had been coming for years, caused by service and grooming deterioration, outdated equipment and people moving to other, richer resorts. Manning’s services just couldn’t compare to those of Big White, Whistler, and many others. Gone were the days of 15 minute line-ups to ascend the orange chair, replaced by worrisome two minute delays. Luckily, skiers like Tremblay and his family still choose Manning as their hill of choice and recommended it to others for its snow, family-friendly hill, and the fact that it’s nearly impossible to get lost. Tremblay couldn’t help but remember the glory days of the past. The runs were always groomed to big resort standards, moguls cut into perfect knolls from the constant action of mogul enthusiasts and relatively new equipment. It meant full parking lots, long line-ups and families everywhere. Nights bustled with people and activities, families and friends meeting in the lodge for delicious pot-luck dinners. Annually, loved ones and friends would visit the hill for special occasions, holidays and celebrations which included an opportunity to connect with the Tremblay family. The feeling of bustling cheer was common around the hill. Everyone was relaxed, nobody ever thinking that Manning could have a future so hard. Fortunately, a last minute reprieve may mark a turning point for this hill and those hardships may be done now. The owner of Sunshine Valley has taken Manning Park out of the grasp of bankruptcy and hiring is now underway to open up the lodge areas for the summer season. While this marks the hill’s best chance to live

again, Tremblay believes that to win back its previous crowds Manning needs to have excellent management. It also needs someone with passion who is willing to invest money and time for the hill. He hopes this is what the new owner will bring, along with lodge improvement and an expansion of the skiable area. Overall, however, Tremblay is pleased to see that a local investor is interested in bringing the resort back to the level it was before. If the hill had closed for good, he would dearly miss the family history, memories and friends made over a two decade association with the resort.

Strong start for junior squad The Spirit of Fraser Valley junior dragon boat team enjoyed a successful debut at the False Creek Racing Canoe Club’s junior regatta, held two weekends ago on the water that surrounds Vancouver’s Plaza of Nations. The one day event included 21 teams, novice and experienced, from the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Competing in their first regatta of the season, the Spirit competed in four races, one at 200 metres and three at 500m. Their confidence grew race by race. In their final sprint, the team finished first, beating their closest competition by close to three seconds.

They posting their best time ever, beating their previous personal best by more than 10 seconds. The junior team paddles under the Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club banner, training rain or shine on Harrison Lake on Tuesday afternoons, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Anyone who is interested in trying the sport can visit the club website at fvdbc. com or contact the junior director, Steve Clarke, via email at fvdbcjunior@yahoo. ca. Stars on track Kate Klassen pulled out three podium finishes at the Eagle Classic Track Meet, held May 11 in Maple Ridge. Klassen competed in the 11-year-old girls division. The Chilliwack Track and Field Club athlete placed second in the long jump, leaping four metres. She placed second in the 200 metre dash with a time of 30.83 seconds, and third in the 100m dash with a time of 14.85s. Kailea Fuller earned a third-place finish in the 10-year-old girls division. Fuller did so with a 5.41m toss in the shotput. Colman Hughes had a third place finish in the 60m hurdles, recording a time of 12.37s. Rowan Hamilton competed in the 13-year-old boys division, placing second in the shot-put with a toss of 10.19m. He added fith place finishes in javelin (19.73m) and the 1600m run (5:52.35). Tiffanie Childs had a fifth place showing in the 11-year-old girls 100m dash, with a time of 15.44s.

Last hurrah The Chilliwack secondary school girls basketball program will host the final sports event in the old airplane hangar known as the JY Halcrow Gymnasium. As CSS prepares to re-locate from the old building to the new, girls’ basketball tryouts will be held in the gym June 3, 4, 10 and 11. Running from 4 to 6 p.m, the event will be open to all middle and secondary school girls who intend to play at CSS next year. Prospects are expected to attend at least two of the evenings, and will have the distinction of being participants in the event that will answer a trivia question of the future. Registration for Chilliwack FC’s fall/ winter program is open for the developmental and recreational programs. Registration will remain open until June 30. Win or lose, the next week and a half will be a stretch of hockey that Matt Revel will remember for the rest of his life. Revel’s Saskatoon Blades are playing host to the MasterCard Memorial Cup, major junior hockey’s storied championship tournament. The tourney started Friday and ends May 26. Revel, a 17-year-old rookie centre from Abbotsford, is one of the Blades’ most promising youngsters, and he’s thrilled at the opportunity to compete for a title. “It’s been really exciting, especially this week,” Revel told The Abbotsford News via cellphone. “There’s been a lot of excitement around the rink.” As recently as last fall, Revel wasn’t convinced that major junior hockey was the right road for him. He was passed over in the 2011 Western Hockey League bantam draft, partially because he also happened to be an outstanding baseball prospect. But he drew rave reviews in 2011-12 with the Fraser Valley Bruins of the B.C. Major Midget League, and the Blades added him to their protected player list. Even so, Revel initially cast his lot with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs, and was all set to work towards an NCAA scholarship. But the Blades were persistent in their recruitment, and they dangled a carrot that no other junior franchise could boast – an automatic Memorial Cup berth by virtue of their host status.
