Three teachers will be cut Declining enrollment continues to set the tone for budget planning in the school district. The Board of Education held a public budget meeting on Monday, April 29 in Midway and on Tuesday, April 30 that went over the details of the 2013-2014 budget. Secretary-Treasurer Jeanette Hanlon said the

drop in enrollment of 84 students last year was more than anticipated. The district is expected to lose another 45 students in the coming school year – down to 1,268. In 2013/2014 the district will receive $232,231 less in operating than in 2012/2013. With total revenue coming in at $15,580,840 the draft bud-

Nancy Yamamura poses beside the newest display at the Greenwood Museum. The display commemorates the history and memorabilia of hockey here in the Boundary from the early 1900s through the 1960s. The first hockey league in B.C. was the Boundary Hockey League with teams from Greenwood, Grand Forks and Phoenix. The Greenwood Museum and Visitor’s Centre is now open from 10 to 4 every day. get will be balanced through the loss of three teaching positions, one administration position, reduction in custodial time and by taking approximately $90,000 out of unrestricted surplus. This will leave a balance in the unrestricted surplus of $712,119. There were some 20 parents at the meeting who had come primarily to urge the board to fund full-time secretarial positions at West Boundary (WBES) and Greenwood/Midway Elementary Schools (GES/MES). The parents told the board that they see the secretary as a key member of the school team. “Think safety first,” said parent Jennifer Waygood. “Put staff back to full time.” The previous board had cut funding for elementary school secretaries by five hours to 25 hours a week a few years ago. But WBES Principal Brian Foy and the school parent advisory council (PAC) felt the position too important to lose and had funded the five hours through surplus supply budget money. That pool of surplus money dried up earlier this year and the secretary is now working 25 hours per week. So parents have been lobbying the board for a return to full-time status for the job. Adding to their concern, the board announced that in the fall a one-year pilot project will see Brian Foy take on the role of principal at all four west end elementary school. The parents argue that the secretary’s hours should be increased to insure Foy has the administrative support he needs during the year of the pilot project. Superintendent Michael Strukoff has proposed that both Foy and Jennifer MacDonald – who has been named to fill a part-time vice principal position at WBES – will have cell phones and after-school supervision staff will also have a phone. The parents argue the $115 per month needed to bump a secretary up by five hours is small and should be funded by the board from money received for unique geographic factors.

Slugs: To volunteers who quit, leaving other volunteers with all the responsibility. Slugs: To people who, when in a restaurant, don’t turn the ringer on their cell phones down, or set the phone to vibrate.

If you have a hug or a slug, we’d like to hear it. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is that you keep it tasteful. Editor’s discretion will always be exercised. Simply email bctimesnews@shaw.ca with your short quips, compliments or complaints; or you may drop them off at 318 South Copper Street in Greenwood.

Hugs: To the people who show up each spring and fall at the Boundary Invasive Species meetings. They do great work, from building an inventory database to forming partnerships with stakeholders near and far to make sure the local response to invasive species is based on science. Shhhh! Don’t let the Harper government hear that or they’ll be shut down.

GES/MES PAC chair Pat Grouette said the problems listed by the WBES are faced by her schools too. “Funding must be found for staff and student support,” she said. Trustee Cathy Riddle acknowledged the parents were “making very valid points” and noted the trustees were in the room hearing them speak. WBES PAC chair Jodi Klein presented two letters to the board supporting the request for more

secretarial hours – one from a Beaverdell Elementary parent and the other from past WBES secretary Bonnie Kelly who said she’d had trouble finding hours in her day to fulfill all her tasks. Parent Melanie Zane asked the board, “Please understand where we are coming from. We are scared.” This was the last public meeting open for input before the budget goes to the board for any final revisions. The board will meet in-camera to discuss the draft before it is adopted on May 14.

Candidates make last pitch Boundary-Similkameen candidates were asked to provide one last statement to the people of the riding, telling the constituents why to vote for them.

Sam Hancheroff

BC NDP My name is Sam Hancheroff. I was born in Grand Forks and have lived my entire life in the constituency, spending 33 years as a teacher in Okanagan Falls. Public service has always been important to me – whether as a volunteer firefighter or in my 30 years of involvement in local politics as a school trustee and trustee for the irrigation district. This local involvement has given me a thorough understanding of the issues facing this region, as well as experience working with local stakeholders from a diversity of backgrounds to build consensus on important issues, both of which I believe would allow me to serve the region well as an MLA. In this election, the residents of Boundary-Similkameen have an important decision to make. I believe that it’s time for a new government with better priorities. A government that will work for change for the better – one practical step at a time. My wife Barb and I have five grandchildren, so I know personally the importance of ensuring proper access to

education and skills training. With 80 per cent of the new jobs created in B.C. requiring some form of post-secondary education, I’m thrilled by our party’s commitment to supporting students through $100 million in post-secondary student grants, as well as additional money for skills training. This money will help improve apprenticeship completion rates and ensure that people across the province, including my own grandchildren, have the skills needed for future jobs. Change for the better also means real support to strengthen the forest industry. As a young man, I worked in the forest, setting chokers behind the D-8 Cat, bucking trees at the landing and working on the planer chain at the Pope & Talbot mill in Grand Forks. These forests provided good-paying jobs that allowed me to work my way through school and they also taught me the value of hard work. But those opportunities are disappearing. Over the last decade the BC Liberals have doubled raw log exports. In 2012 they reached 5.7 million cubic metres – enough to fill a bumper-to-bumper lineup of logging trucks stretching from Vancouver to the border of Mexico. And with our logs went our jobs. We’ve seen mills close and provincial investment in forest health dry up. It doesn’t have to be like that. That’s why I’m excited to be running for the NDP. We’ve got a plan to invest $100 million in forest health, double the number of seedlings planted to five million a year

and focus on using B.C. logs to bring back some of those B.C. jobs. We’ll also update inventories, which are essential to proper management of our forests, and strengthen local involvement in land use planning so the people who live here – the ones who know their forests the best – will have a real say. This is the choice we’re faced with. If you believe, like I do, that it’s time for a positive change, then I ask for your support on May 14.

John Kwasnica

Green Party Since 1986 in Boundary-Similkameen, the Green Party has held onto the hope that critical economic concerns will be decisive – care of air, water and soil. Most voters will cast for those they see as best able to foster new jobs, hold together essential government services (e.g. highways, hospitals, schools), manage taxation fairly and avoid heavy debt. Heavy or light voter turnout will decide the actual quality of the outcome. If elected I would advance the policies to create green jobs in soft energy development and in value-added resource industry, to empower local communities to manage

health and education to suit their particular needs, to develop public transit including better rural inter-urban bus service, to support young farmers, to tax fairly and avoid heavy debt.

Linda Larson

BC Liberals The BC Liberal budget that came out earlier this year maintained the current levels of commitment to British Columbians and kept a controlled approach to moving forward. Unlike the NDP candidate, I do not have “buckets” of money to promise you. The NDP platform relies heavily on taking away money from your businesses, your higher wage earners and your local credit unions – this will not put money in your hands to spend. The NDP have also stated they would put a stop to all capital projects not currently underway – the Penticton Hospital and the correctional facility are now in limbo. I represent stable businessfriendly policy, which I believe will attract new business and investment to B.C. I support the Healthy Forests/Healthy Communities recommendations and the Rural BC Project and many other concerns that have been presented to me (watershed protection, transportation, daycare, senior care etc.). This is an important election. I believe that my business background and years of participating in municipal and regional government, provincial committees (Small Business Roundtable and Junior Achievement of BC) and volunteering (Community Futures) has given me the necessary skills to be an effective voice for you in Victoria. I was told by some people that governments always go into debt so what does it matter if the hole gets $3 billion deeper? Well, it matters to me, my children and my grandchildren and that’s why I am the candidate for the BC Liberal Party and that’s why you should vote for me.

Doug Pederson Independent I’ll be transparent with everything I do. Maybe start a trend for the government representatives everywhere. How

refreshing that would be? How many Stanley Cup riot convictions would there have been if it wasn’t for video? How quick the Boston Bombers went on the run after their video was released. The people deserve honest representation by the best candidate available. I’d put my resume up against all the rest combined. More real world experience and not a chamber of commerce member. I’ll post video from the Osoyoos and Oliver forums for all to see. The local cable channel 18 will show the Oliver footage for the rest of the election. I sure wished that the forums would have included a segment where the candidates could have asked one 30-second question. A half-time break of 15 minutes for a coffee and donut should be done. Start it at 5 p.m., a lot of elderly don’t like going out at night. Everything can be made better; even election forums. I think with my video and computer background, I can make the position of MLA the most transparent anywhere. The people are tired of secrets that always cost them money. All the questions and investigations that need to be researched, I can do. With people seeing all the details. No secrets, no corruption. My overall background trumps what ever the others can offer. I’m against Monsanto and GMO (genetically modified organisms). I want to see all candidates talk to the marijuana issue. I’d like to see the Young Offenders Act repealed. All records from previous MLA’s should be made available. I’d like to see the people unite rather that be divided by minor issues. I am Doug Pederson, the people’s candidate.

Mischa Popoff

Independent Fortis’ two-tiered billing system has nothing to do with conservation. It’s a tax grab, plain and simple, and it must be stopped. As British Columbians began conserving energy over the last decade, the bean counters in Victoria realized less revenue was rolling in as a result. So they raised water rates for Fortis, and then subsequently rubber-stamped For-

tis’s request for a rate increase and twotiered billing, pretending it was all for our own good. But I’ve got news for this province’s bureaucrats, it’s our power. It’s time for Victoria to stop taxing us for using what’s ours and once we get that straight, we should be rewarded with dividends every time our power is sold outside of B.C. Likewise, the carbon tax must also be eliminated. We smoke, drink and burn fossil fuels just as much as Americans do, and they pay half the tax on those things that we do. Sin taxes clearly do not work as a deterrent. What’s more, we already pay about 50 per cent in tax whenever we fill up on gas, so how is another four or five per cent going to make any difference? It’s a tax grab, plain and simple and it must be eliminated. Other programs to be cut include this province’s useless and highly damaging Meat Industry Regulation (MIR), which has destroyed the local meat-processing industry in B.C. and hurt ranching. Premier Gordon Campbell imposed MIR on this province in the name of public safety but there was and remains no evidence that local meat-processors posed any threat whatsoever to the public. Quite to the contrary in fact: deaths attributed to unsafe meat have all come from large-scale plants in Alberta. The next program to eliminate is Victoria’s much-ballyhooed On-Farm Food Safety program. Again, there is no evidence that farmers in this province pose any threat whatsoever to the public. Leave farmers alone Victoria! They feed us. When the economy of British Columbia improves, rural communities across the Boundary-Similkameen will boom just like small towns across the prairies are booming right now. Pay down the debt, attract more businesses by eliminating useless regulations, and we will all prosper. I ask you for your vote on May 14, and to do your part to make history in this riding by sending the first truly independent voice to Victoria to speak on your behalf.

Forget zombies Forget about the zombies – the mussels are really coming! We know this because every since zebra and quagga mussels were introduced into the North American ecosystem in the 1980’s they have been spreading across the continent. They do incredible damage to both native species and to infrastructure. They disrupt the food chain and they have no natural predators in North America. They grow in colonies that can clog industrial pipes leading into lakes. Until this month there was no known way to get rid of them. But a U.S. engineering firm has eradicated an infestation of zebra mussels from a quarry in Virginia in what is believed to be the first extermination of the invasive species in the wild. Mind you it took three weeks, thousands of gallons of potassium chloride and somewhere around $365,000 US to do it. You have to wonder what the effect was on the native species. So prevention seems to be the key here. In December 2012 BC law changed so that no invasive zebra or quagga mussel, alive or dead, is allowed to remain on boats or related equipment. Failure to clean mussels off boats or equipment could result in a fine of up to $100,000. But deterrent is only effective if it is made known. Enter the Clean, Drain, Dry education initiative that is being spearheaded locally by the Boundary Invasive Species Society (BISS) and the Christina lake Stewardship Society (see story page XXX). If you are a boater or rafter please get educated about the threat from these invasive species. If you have any ideas that might help spread the word – for instance, if you might like to put up a rack with educational pamphlets, then get in touch with Barb Stewart at BIS -- 250-446-2232 or via email to boundaryinvasives@gmail.com.

Don’t “move a mussel”

When it comes to the zebra or quagga mussel there are only two options for our local lakes – prevention or mitigation. Once they have infested a lake there is no going back. You have to learn to live with it. And it would only take the irresponsible behaviour of one boat owner to contaminate a lake by putting their fouled boat into the water. With that in mind the Boundary Invasive Species Society (BIS) and the Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) are planning an aquatic education program for Christina Lake this summer. According to a press release issued by the two groups, there is growing concern regarding the spread of aquatic invasive species in B.C. In 2012, seven vehicles with watercraft heading to B.C. were found to be fouled with mussels while being inspected in Idaho. According to the release, once this species is established it brings with it large economic and environment impacts including diminished property values, fisheries, and recreation and tourism values. There is no control mechanism, so education is imperative to help ensure

that this species along with other identified species does not come to our waterways. The province has established legislation prohibiting movement of boats with mussels; however, there is no mandatory inspection program. Without a concerted effort by all stakeholders it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when they will arrive. The key message for boaters is “Clean, Drain, Dry”. The intent is to make boaters using the public boat launches aware of the need to clean, drain, and dry their boat before entering the lake. Staff will be at Texas Creek boat launch on weekends and as many weekdays as possible through the summer doing voluntary boat inspections. In December 2012, the provincial government amended the Controlled Alien Species Regulation to further restrict non-native species. No invasive zebra or quagga mussel, alive or dead, is allowed to remain on boats or related equipment. Failure to clean mussels off boats or equipment could result in a fine of up to $100,000. The province is developing a plan for implementing the new regulation and is focusing on training government staff

Members of the newly rebranded Boundary Invasive Species Society posed after their spring meeting in Midway last month. Formerly known as the Boundary Weed Management Committee the group has expanded their mandate to include invasives other than plants only.

first then will be starting with public outreach. Meanwhile, the local education BIS/ CLSS campaign will include a communication strategy with resort owners to enable them to share information with clients. Signage and posters will be put up and displays at public events over the summer are planned as well. A video, Don’t Move a Mussel, while long at over 40 minutes, is a very good educational tool. It is available on YouTube. According to a provincial government factsheet on the mussels they are not native to North America. Since their introduction from Europe in the 1980s these mussels have spread in Ontario and Quebec, and are now found in at least 24 American states as far west as California and Colorado. Zebra and quagga mussels are not established in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba. If a boat (or other water-based recreational equipment) has come from a known or suspected mussel-infested area, it must be cleaned with hot water (hotter than 60º C), totally drained (including components such as bilges, pumps, intakes, etc.) and dried. It must not be launched into any body of water for at least 30 days (“Clean, Drain, Dry”). Washington, Montana and Idaho all run inspection programs and those states immediately notify the B.C. government if they intercept a suspect boat.

Capital tax will negatively impact Editor, The Times:

In its financial platform, the provincial NDP has announced its intention to apply a capital tax to all B.C. Credit Unions with capital in excess of $20 million should they be elected. If this policy is implemented, it will have a significant impact on our organization and the people and organizations associated with us.

This tax will be applied regardless of how profitable the credit union is. While other provinces in Canada apply a capital tax on business, cooperative enterprises such as credit unions, are exempted from the tax. As we understand this proposal, the cost to Kootenay Savings will be roughly $780,000 per year and will continue to increase annually as our capital base increases. This is a significant cost that will ultimately be borne by our members, our

communities and our employees, as it will have to be paid from income that would otherwise be shared with our members, contributed to community organizations or paid in salaries and benefits. We sincerely hope that the NDP will reconsider this proposed tax on Credit Unions should they form the next provincial government. Brent Tremblay, President and CEO, Kootenay Savings Credit Union

Wear purple for Lupus on May 10 Editor, The Times:

Lupus, Systemic Lupus Erythermatosus (SLE), is one of the over 100 kinds of arthritis. Lupus is known as the disease of 1,000 faces because of the vast number of body parts that it can affect. SLE is the most serious kind of Lupus as it can attack any of our organs, lungs, eyes, blood vessels, muscles, and the brain. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself. The healthy cells in our body get confused and attack the harmful free radicals and our healthy protective cells. This is like a war going on inside the body 24/7. Many who have Lupus also have Fi-

bromyalgia and Raynaud’s syndrome. Photosensitivity can bring on a Lupus flare. The involvement of the central nervous system can cause impairment of cognitive thinking, fatigue, depression, loss of memory, confusion, thought process, seizures and more. Lupus also mimics other diseases such a MS. As you can see this disease is the very complex I am writing this article to spread awareness and let people know that we desperately need funding for more research to be done. We need specific treatment for Lupus. My best friend, my sister Gloria died 34 years ago of Lupus at the young age of 42 and she was on the same medications we have today and the same ones that were used 50 years ago.

The good news is that we have Lupus research being done in B.C. at UBC. I have had SLE for over 22 years and the symptoms keep coming. I am grateful that I can operate a small business from my home and I have met many friends running this little business that I love. Number one on my bucket list is to let as many people as I can know about Lupus; therefore, I am working with Lupus B.C. to be an advocate for education about this disease. For more information on Lupus please contact the Lupus B.C. Society at http://www.bclupus.org or Shirley Bell 250-447-6298 (shirleybell1@shaw. ca). Shirley Bell, Christina Lake

Two awarded Taekwondo black belt With the graduation of their first two Taekwondo black belts on April 20, the Boundary Martial Arts Club (BMAC) has passed a major milestone. Sixty-seven-year-old Vlodko Barchuk from Rock Creek and 15-year-old Kari Durban of Greenwood were both successful at attaining their first degree black belt in Abbotsford. BMAC senior instructor Bo Macfarlane achieved his third degree black belt at the same testing. Grand Master Lee, ninth degree black belt, tested the trio. “Learning martial arts self-defense skills is the least important focus of our club,” said Barchuk, who volunteers his time as assistant instructor at the club. “Our emphasis is on self-awareness and respect, respect to parents and elders and to each other. There is also a major component of respecting our nation. Our reward as leaders is watching our students grow and develop these attributes that positively contribute to all aspects of their lives, now and into the future.” Macfarlane agrees. “We are trying to teach what the martial arts are not just about kicking and punching but to help us become the best we can be, both on the training floor and off of it. That being said, Taekwondo is a very effective form of selfdefense, physical fitness, and it’s a ton of fun.” Macfarlane is an elementary school principal in Osoyoos and previously was principal of West Boundary Elementary School (WBES). Barchuk is a semi-retired social worker with many years of expe-

rience working in child and adolescent mental health. “I am most proud that we do this as a community service,” Macfarlane explained. “It’s an honour to give a little something back to this amazing community.” Now in its sixth year, the club has 28 registered students. For the past two years BMAC has not charged a fee for membership and where possible assists students in purchasing their uniforms and paying for their rank advancement testing. Barchuk said the club has been generously sup-

ported by a grant-in-aid from Area E Rural Director Bill Baird and the Kettle Valley Recreation Commission. Master Lee travels to Rock Creek to test students for rank advancement, which is recorded and registered with the World Taekwondo Federation. Master Lee has generously reduced his normal testing fee. This June BMAC is planning a free three-session seminar covering self-avoidance of dangerous situations and basic self-defense techniques. It’s a hands-on event for mothers and daughters. The se-

ries will be presented in collaboration with RCMP. BMAC female Taekwondo students will teach the class with the support of Macfarlane and Barchuk. The club will post notices as details are firmed up. The club holds classes at WBES on Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5 to 6 p.m. Boundary Martial Arts Club welcomes anyone from the community from ages six and up. New members are always welcome. For more information contact Macfarlane at 250-446-2846 or Barchuk at 250449-8404.

Casino action all in fun

Saturday night’s Greenwood Legion Fun Night saw the excitement of the casino floor blended with an evening of fundraising fun. While only about 40 people came out, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155 Entertainment Director Solange Jacob called the evening a success thanks in large part to the generosity of everyone involved. She said four pies she’d baked each sold at auction for $30 apiece. Andy Shelton was the auctioneer, Dyan Stoochnoff, Tony Pearce and Stu Brisco the blackjack dealers, while Malcholm Logan spun the wheel for Crown and Anchor. As always, the duck race was a highlight of the evening. Proceeds from the night go to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 155 Bursary Fund to help this year’s class of BCSS grads further their education. The crowd pleads for a sympathetic wheel at the Legion Fun Night recently.

BFISS recognized for important work

Boundary Family and Individual Services Society (BFISS) was presented an Award of Recognition by the BC School Superintendents’ Association (BCSSA) on Thursday, April 11 in Vancouver. BFISS is a non-profit society providing a wide variety of programs to meet the needs and interests of children, youth and families in the Boundary – the exact geographic area of School District 51 (Boundary). “It was a great honour to be recognized by the BC School Superintendents’ Association,” said Leda Leander, executive director of BFISS. “We have accepted this honour on behalf of all of the individuals and organizations in the Boundary area that are collaborating to provide opportunities for children, youth and families.”

In a press release announcing the award, BCSSA said that BFISS and the school district have developed a strong partnership to deliver services to families and students across the Boundary school district. “Their partnership has allowed the region to create a top tier community table of service providers BISM (Boundary Integrated Services Team) comprised of: • Ministry for Children and Family Development • Public Health • Sunshine Valley Little Peoples’ Centre (non-profit) • Boundary Family and Individual Services Society • School District 51 (Boundary) “These groups collaborate and leverage their combined resources to deliver services to children and families

across the region.” Boundary Family Centres, which are located in the district’s elementary schools, were developed as a collaborative effort between BFISS and the school district. “The Boundary Family Centres were born (2001) out of the work of a group of caring and committed community partners who dreamed of integrated family centres where children, youth and their caregivers could conveniently access a range of individual and family health and wellness services. Since 2003 the centres have been enriching the lives of families in the Boundary region.” “I am very pleased that the BC Superintendents’ Association recognized the important work that BFISS does across the Boundary and that it is an important partner of the school district in supporting children and families in the region,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Strukoff. “This partnership makes a significant contribution to the success of our students like a 94 per cent graduation rate and a 93 per cent graduation rate for Aboriginal students.”

What have they done to Grandpa? H

undreds of seniors are stuck in acute care hospitals and residential care homes – away from their loved ones – because the government cut home care and eliminated home support services. The government has downloaded services to volunteers and eliminated professional home support workers who are trained and accountable in dealing with the needs of seniors. Without proper home support, many seniors are needlessly forced into institutions.

Universal home support

COSCO is calling for universal home care and home support services, based on need, available seven days a week to seniors and people with disabilities. Such a service would allow thousands of seniors to live with dignity and respect in their own homes, close to families and friends. It would cost much less than acute or residential care. It would strengthen our overall public health care system by reducing the pressure on acute care hospitals. As a matter of both human decency and common sense economics, providing universal home support so people can remain in their own homes must be a priority for the next government of our province.

On May 14, please vote for a candidate who will respect seniors and their families by supporting universal home care and home support services

Introducing

Lucas Peters

Lucas Peters impresses you as a wellrounded young man with excellent prospects. He’s already spent a couple of years away from home – billeting with the Brandt and Hope families in Trail while playing for the Kootenay Ice in the B.C. Major Midget League. “I feel like I have become more independent, moving away for a couple of years,” says Lucas. “Maturing a lot and being more responsible for myself.” When asked about his favorite courses he ran through the list from math to English to the sciences. “It’s all good,” he said. It seems to be all good too, when you look at his academic history – because, except for 2009-2010 school year, he’s been on the Principal’s Honour Roll since 2006. That means he maintained an

Introducing

A average in all subjects. In 2009-2010 he must have eased off. He was only able to make the honour roll (maintaining As and Bs in all subjects). Hockey is a big part of Lucas’ life. He qualified for the provincials in 2010 and 2011 and has played defense for the Kootenay Ice in 2011 and 2013. This summer he is planning to get a job. Hopefully returning to the Midway Museum and Greenwood Pool where he worked last summer. “Hopefully I can work two jobs – part-time at the pool and full-time at the museum.” He’s also worked as a labourer at Vaagen Fibre Canada. This fall he hopes to be playing junior hockey and taking some college courses by correspondence. Five or 10 years from now he sees himself going to UBC Okanagan to study business – following

his sister Shelby. Lucas is a member of the BCSS golf team, tennis club and the softball team. His other interests include reading, computers, hiking, biking and running. Lucas is a young fellow who has already represented his family and the Boundary well. And he’s only just begun.

Tayler Uyeyama

BCSS grad Tayler Uyeyama has been at the school for all five years, and in the district for all 12. She’s proof that with pluck and determination it is possible to have a full and rewarding high school experience in rural BC. When asked her strengths she said she was really outgoing and ready for challenges. She plans to return for another summer of work at the Copper Eagle Cappuccino and Bakery in Greenwood. In September she’s looking forward to getting a job in Kelowna and saving to travel to England to visit family. “I am not sure what I want to study yet, that’s why I want to take a year off and travel,” she said. Tayler has been on the Merit Roll throughout high school and says she liked the sciences best – biology being her favourite course. Tayler is an athlete. She started playing hockey in Grade 8, won the best defence

award in hockey two years in a row, and was playing on the AAA West Kootenay Wildcats in 2010. She won a bronze medal in the B.C. Winter games. She also enjoyed playing soccer in high school years Her Grade 12 exit file stated her objective is to “seek full time employment, utilizing my hard work ethic, as well as my skills and abilities when an opportunity presents itself.” In five years she sees herself as having an undergraduate degree in science. “I want to be successful with a job and have financial security,” she insists. When asked about her support system she said, “My family is everything to me. They never judge no matter what I do. They also try their best to help me with anything I need.” Energetic and outgoing – Tayler will be an asset to any team she works with in the future.

McMynn’s celebrates 100th There will be a big party in Midway this weekend as McMynn’s Foods has joined with the Midway Public Library’s annual spring sale. Everything will start in the grocery store parking lot at 8 a.m. when the library will start serving breakfast. McMynn’s is celebrating 100 years of business in the community as well as introducing a whole new product line. “McMynn’s has decided to change wholesale suppliers,” explained Doug McMynn. “We are going with the Family Foods program which is part of Safeway.” “With the Safeway program we are hoping that we can provide better pricing. They also have three-times the amount of products that are available to us. “We are changing the store around to suit more what the community wants with the new deli and larger bakery and changes to the meat department.”

What you call JUNK could be someone’s TREASURE.

Also new to the store will be ads running sales during the day. “We can have a 10 per cent off day and advertise it on the screens,” Doug said. “So if you shop locally at our store you will get benefits of those sales happening during the day or during the hour.” Expanded store hours were announced too. McMynn said they are going to keep the store open until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday until September to see how the shoppers like it.

As a result, the Greenwood mail remains at Grand Forks every alternate day although a stage runs daily between the two points.”

Reckless words are like a sword. Proverbs 12:18; He who holds his tongue is wise. Proverbs 10:19; May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Psalm 19:14. One Sunday morning I brought a tube of toothpaste to church. During my message I opened the toothpaste and squeezed all of the toothpaste out of the tube into a bowl. When I was sure I had about all of the toothpaste squeezed out of the tube, I ask for someone to help me. When my volunteer came forward I

asked them to put all of the toothpaste back into the tube. They looked at me and said, “I can’t.” I thanked them for trying and let them return to their seat. Did you know that very same thing is true of the words we speak? Have you ever said something that hurt someone’s feelings and heard them say, “You take that back!” You can’t take it back, can you? Once you have said it, it is said. You can’t put the words back in your mouth any more than you can squeeze this toothpaste back into the tube. That is why we need to be very careful about the things we say. The Bible says, “He who holds his tongue is wise.” All of you know the children’s

Audrey Mary May Smith Feb. 22, 1942 – May 2, 2013

Mary passed away at her home in Rock Creek, B.C. on May 2, 2013 after a long fight with cancer, with her family close by. She is survived by her husband of some 32 years Jim; brothers Glen (Marg), Jim (Bev), George (Lou); sisters-in-law Susan, Leslie (Gunnar), Cindy (Brent); many nieces & nephews as well as the “FRAMILY”. She was born on February 22, 1942 in Ailsa Craig, Ontario. Mary was predeceased by her parents Tom and Birdetta Gagan. Mary was a book keeper who loved nothing better than a messy set of books that needed to be cleaned up. The later few years she worked for Miller Springs water company as their bookkeeper and financial officer, only stopping when she became sick. She was the treasurer of the Fair association for over 17 years and was recently made a life member of that organization. Mary very much loved live theater and old movies. One of Mary’s greatest loves the last few years was the “grandchildren” that she got from her “Framily”. A memorial celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday June 1, 2013 at the Rock Creek Pavilion. A donation to the charity of your choice or the children’s hospital, or the cancer society would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com Arrangements entrusted to Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium, Oliver & Osoyoos.

rhyme that says, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.” That sounds nice, but it just isn’t true. Words can hurt. The Bible says, “Reckless words pierce like a sword.” Our words can cut like a knife. They can hurt others. We all know that God hears every word we say and he knows every thought we have in our mind. It is very important for us to be careful about the things we think and say. The Bible says, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.” Once we have said it, we can’t take it back, so let’s make sure that our words are pleasing to God.

Candidates talk about education

General Voting Day is next week (May 14) and School District 51, the Boundary District Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2098 sent an education-related questionnaire to Boundary-Similkameen candidates. Candidates were asked these questions: 1. How will you/your party/government work to strengthen the co-governance relationship between boards of education and government? 2. Will you/your party/government commit to predictable and stable funding, which includes the annual addition of dollars to address costs for negotiated salary increases, increasing infrastructure expenses and provincial program implementation? 3. What is your position on free collective bargaining for the public education sector? 4. How will your government recognize and support education workers such as education assistants, custodians, bus drivers, maintenance and clerical staff in terms of a) funding whole jobs that support families and communities and b) allow for a high level of collaboration between teachers and classroom support workers? Here are there responses: Sam Hancheroff, BC NDP How will you/your party/government work to strengthen the co-governance relationship between boards of education and government? As a school trustee for three terms, I know how important this relationship is. The BC NDP would co-manage the education system in B.C., not just in words but in actions. The BC NDP would work with the school trustees on strengthening the cogovernance of the education system.

Will you/your party/government commit to predictable and stable funding, which includes the annual addition of dollars to address costs for negotiated salary increases, increasing infrastructure expenses and provincial program implementation? The BC Liberals changed the funding formula in 2001 and passed Bills 28 and 29, which in 2011 the Supreme Court of Canada deemed to be unconstitutional. A BC NDP government will direct new resources to classrooms around B.C. to provide students with the support they need, and to hire new teachers, education assistants, librarians and counsellors. The BC NDP has committed to spending over $250 million to hire new teachers, education assistants, librarians and counsellors. What is your position on free collective bargaining for the public education sector? The BC NDP supports free and fair collective bargaining rights, including the right to bargain class size and composition. We believe that successful negotiations with teachers occur at the bargaining table, not in the media and will work to restore a relationship with teachers based on respect. How will your government recognize and support education workers such as education assistants, custodians, bus drivers, maintenance and clerical staff in terms of (a) funding whole jobs that support families and communities and (b) allow for a high level of collaboration between teachers and classroom support workers? The BC NDP education platform commits to provide students with the classroom support they need. We will hire 1,000 new teachers, teaching assistants, librarians, and counsellors. And we will place additional focus on students with special needs, Aboriginal and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The BC NDP will invest $75 million in 2013/14, $90 million in 2014/15 and $100 million in 2015/16.

John Kwasnica, Green Party of B.C. John Kwasnica issued the following statement: The Green Party is aware that the two arms of the political establishment in B.C. will square off on opposite ends of the tax and spend debate in education and elsewhere. Professional services and education are both a benefit and a burden. Today, individual school districts can only spend what the province funds. In a Green government, local school authorities would be free to develop curriculums specific to their needs. Professionals and education could fulfill their career mission of preparing the young for the challenges of the future. Academic goals may give way to specific skills training – the kind of education that will prepare us to deal with challenges of global warming and climate change Linda Larson, BC Liberals I have made my position clear on these questions so will not answer them individually. We have 73,000 less students and 16,000 more full-time teachers than in 2005. There is a lot of money inside the current school budgets and ways of managing the current envelope without huge increases is a challenge for all. Without putting even more money in there is no way to satisfy the requests in the (questionnaire). Doug Pederson, Independent There are some real problems in the education system. In all the years of computing at the highest levels, there wasn’t a job that I couldn’t have taught a Grade 8 student. I made that statement in 1993 to a class of 5 and 6 students. They cheered me, knowing I wasn’t lying to them. How much does the average citizen remember of their schooling? Maybe five per cent. Years ago at a company Christmas party, I was seated with two new staff both PhDs that had taught computer science. I had 15 years consulting, they had just taught computing. They knew that there was no way they could hold a candle to me as a consultant. When I was a kid, I told my mother that a friend of mine was so dumb he was in the dumb class and didn’t even know it. I didn’t tell him. This kid was made to feel inadequate for the rest of his life over information that was of no use in the real world. My dad had a Grade 3 education and was the smartest in our family. Only one or two of my teachers would be in the same category as him. Education does not make one smart or better. A friend of mine was smarter at 20 than when I met him at 40. He spent most of his life around children. I’d sooner have a discussion with a 60-year-old barber than a 60-year-old grade school teacher. One engineer at the pulp and paper mill I was working at said, “Everything I know about pulp and paper I learned here.” We need way more master apprentice edu-

cation for those that don’t fit in. At the same pulp mill, they replaced all the pulp testing staff with technical staff. The new staff would take samples to analyze and be back in 15 or 20 minutes with the results. The old timers would pick up some in their fingers and know the results by simply rolling it around. A trapper friend of mine knows more about the wildlife than any of the Fish and Game folks – hands down. I could go on and on but you get my point. And would be open to debate any of these issues on video. The most important course I took in grade school was typing. I was very fast and it made me look good wherever I went. These are facts that most people that aren’t in the education system know. As for your questions. Yes, I support you. Mischa Popoff, Independent I can’t believe the arrogance of the board of education, the teachers’ association and CUPE Local 2098. If we don’t get people back to work in the primary and secondary resource sector of this riding, we won’t have any money for education, or any other tertiary services.

The province is broke! We’re teetering on becoming a have-not province like Quebec! It’s time to cut salaries and start cutting positions throughout the education sector of this province, from K to Grade 12 and beyond, right up to university. There are more than 70,000 fewer students enrolled in our schools, so by my calculations we need to start by eliminating 2,900 teaching positions. And even when we finally get the province back on a solid financial footing, it’s time to reassess what teachers – along with police, fire and other public-sector employees – are paid in B.C. We also need to reconsider the idea that it takes four, five, or even six years of university to become a teacher, along with the idea that teachers who go back to school to get master’s degrees deserve to be paid more for doing the exact-same work they did with a bachelor’s degree. As for collective bargaining, it’s impossible under the current system for taxpayers to even be represented at the bargaining table. Politicians and bureaucrats have proven themselves incapable and unwilling to stand up to teachers-union demands for more, more. Enough!
