35th Annual Wild Goose Chase

Record heat for the 35th annual Wild Goose Chase in Vanderhoof Sunday, May 5th, 2013. More on page 3. Submitted

All Candidates Forum in Vanderhoof The Nechako Lakes All Candidates Forum was held on Wed. May 1st at the NVSS Small Auditorium in Vanderhoof. Tom Bulmer was the moderator. The candidates were asked to state how the forum went for them and some of their opinions. Below are their answers: Dan Brooks - B.C. Conservatives “It was an incredible debate the room was packed with conser-

vative voters looking for change. Over the course of the evening, John Rustad’s weak excuses for the past eight years were no match for my strong voice for Nechako Lakes as I stood up for local residents and northern communities. It has become evident that Nechako Lakes will be voting for change on May 14, and that clearly means the contest now is between myself and the NDP’s Sussanne Skidmore-Hewlett.”

John Rustad - B.C. Liberals “The choice is clear. This is a critical time for B.C. One where we have an opportunity to become debt free and move forward with balanced budgets. I worked hard to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in projects for Nechako Lakes. I ask for your support to continue the work of securing our future and building a strong economy”. Continued on page 5

Pregnant woman killed in ATV crash Saturday, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Vanderhoof RCMP were called to a single motor vehicle incident involving an ATV in the Cluculz Lake area, on Jardine Road. Preliminary investigation shows that the lone female rider was attempting to negotiate a turn in order to turn around but the quad tipped over and she was fatally injured. The 28-year-old woman, who was six months pregnant, was transported to the St. John Hospital in Vanderhoof where she succumbed to her injuries. The BC Coroners Services will now be handling this investigation.

The questions were thoughtful and clearly the people of Vanderhoof believe in a hands on approach to governance”. Colin Hamm - B.C. This evening’s meeting was well organized and featured civil discussion among the candidates fea-

An Historic Opportunity for

Northern B.C.

Who will stand up for Nechako Lakes? The voice of Nechako Lakes has been silent in Victoria for eight long years. The incumbent MLA, John Rustad... * has never been appointed to cabinet, * has never been named to a position of trust or responsibility, * has authored just one private members’ bill since being elected in 2005,

Dan Brooks will be a strong voice for B.C.’s North. He has a clear vision for, and a commitment to, the people of Nechako Lakes.

t c e l E

Dan will... * put constituents first, * bring outspoken leadership to the legislature, * stand up for northern interests,

* has voted with the BC Liberals on legislation that hurt the North, and

* put Nechako Lakes on the map, and

* has remained silent in the vain hope of obtaining a cabinet position.

* fight for the North to ensure we no longer are neglected by Victoria.

John Rustad is ‘WHIPPED’ by the BC Liberals!

Dan Brooks will not be ‘WHIPPED’!

B.C. Mining growing

NEWS

35th Annual Nechako Valley Festival Awards

Far-flung mines and local impact Walter Strong Lakes District News Although gas and oil pipelines debates dominate the news with headline-grabbing radical rhetoric, they are a fraction of the total resource development planned for Northern B.C. More than 29,000 people in B.C. find their employment in mining, with most of those numbers being located in rural communities. The 2011 average income for a mining employee was $115,700, up by seven per cent over the previous year. Despite high salaries, it is a workforce facing labour shortages. In B.C., the mining sector alone expects to require an additional 16,770 workers within the next 10 years. Those workers will have to be found in competition with the oil and gas sectors in the same labour pool and facing the same labour shortages. According to the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO), in the past 10 years 40 mining projects, representing almost $12.5 billion in investment, have come under environmental assessment for possible approval. Most of those projects remain in pre-application stage, but 10 have already received the environmental green light. Among those close to the Lakes District are the Blackwater Gold project and the Mount Milligan mine expansion. Energy projects, which include not only natural gas and oil exploration, but hydro-electric and wind power projects, account for 63 additional projects submitted for review to the EAO in the past 10 years. Those projects amount to more than $49.5 billion in investment dollars. This isn’t to say that all these projects will necessarily go into the ground - or even that each one will be approved - but they do demonstrate the place that mining and energy extraction projects will play in B.C. and in the Northwest in particular. Unlike mining projects which require a significantly large work-

force, oil and gas projects have massive start-up labour requirements but taper off over the longer term. For example, the 63 energy projects represent 43,000 person years of construction jobs, but only 3,800 longer-term operating jobs. The 40 mining projects represent less than half the person-years of construction work, but they would provide over 93,000 operating jobs. With mineral mines often producing for more than 20 years, mining can bring long-term job stability to a region. Despite the monetary and employment benefits of mining, new projects face significant expenses and hurdles before they reach construction phase. Mining is not a sure thing in B.C. The provinces’ environmental assessment process considers potential short and long-term impacts on the environment and First Nations, among other qualifications. Recently, Pacific Booker Mineral’s Morrison Copper and Gold mine project proposed for a location just north of Granisle, B.C., was denied an environmental assessment certificate after 10 years of preparatory work and an investment of $30 million. Stock holders lost $140 million in share value. The company is currently suing to have the decision overturned and to be awarded damages. British Columbia isn’t the only province where mining is playing a significant role in local and provincial economies. Those projects, even a province away, can impact local quality of life issues. The Coalspur Mines Ltd. Vista coal mine project near Hinton Alberta, will be Canada’s largest-ever coal mine. Twelve million tonnes of cleaned-coal will be transported to terminals on B.C.’s west coast. It is anticipated that Burns Lake will eventually see an additional six, 100-car trains per day as coal makes its way to the Ridley coal terminal in Prince Rupert. With files from the Interior News.

Vanderhoof and Districts Co-operative Association 68th AGM Over 228 members and guests attended our 68th Annual General Meeting. The meeting was held at Nechako Senior Citizens Friendship Centre at 7:00pm, Monday April 22, 2013. Nechako Caterers staff again served a great meal. Tom Bulmer M/C’d the meeting. The Board of Directors reported record sales for 2012, increased $9.6 million or 5% to $201.9 million which generated net savings of $14.1 million or 7.1% of sales; this is a decrease of net savings of $500,000 from 2011. Our petroleum litres continue to grow with Quesnel having another strong year with growth of another 5 million litres to an annual total of over 21 million litres. At Quesnel we also opened our new Agro/Convenience Store, located next to our cardlock, in June 2012. In Vanderhoof Food Store sales increased by 5.4% and Home Centre sales grew by 4.3%. Management projects 2013 sales to increase $16.1 million; 7.9% and a litre increase of 10.8 million or 6.8%. The second cardlock site in Prince George, the continued growth in Quesnel and expanding further south to the Williams Lake area will all contribute to this growth. As well our sales teams at our existing locations will continue to pursue new opportunities and accounts. The members approved the following distribu-

tion of 2012 savings: patronage allocation in equity and cash back to members of $8.9 million at a rate of 4.60% on member’s 2012 purchases with a provision for general reserve of $5.5 million. In 2012 Co-op members earned an average of 5.1 cents per litre at 4.60% of allocation. Board election incumbents Rene Jones, Marje Makow and Colleen Erickson from Vanderhoof, Prince George and Burns Lake District, were declared elected by acclamation for a 3 year term. The other six members of the board are Bud Pye, Ken Loper, Henry Dyck from the Vanderhoof, Prince George and Burns Lake District, Cesar Isidoro from Houston District, Nirmal Parmar from the Terrace District and Kim McIvor from Quesnel District. Member relations reported that Co-op donated over $100,000 in financial or in-kind to a variety of groups in the communities. Recycling efforts and our goal towards a greener footprint are still continuing with our support of the Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative program and used oil recycling. Activities in the forthcoming year include doing environmental studies in Smithers and Williams Lake to ensure the chosen ground is suitable for building cardlocks. Continued on page 15

Remember Mom on Mother’s Day May 12, 2013 Shop smart for Mother’s Day Come spring, shoppers often ask, “What gift should I get Mom for Mother’s Day?” How do people transform the sentiments they have for their mother into gifts that represent love and devotion? Buying a Mother’s Day gift is no easy task, especially for those who wait until the last minute to do their shopping. Beginning early can ease the pressure of Mother’s Day shopping. Here are other ways to shop in a smart manner. * Do some sleuthing. Play detective and take inventory of what Mom likes to do the most. If you ask your mother what she wants, she will likely brush off the question and tell you nothing. It is up to you to do the investigative work. Pay attention to conversations and see if there is anything she mentions wanting to try or something around the house that may need updating. Practical gifts are less likely to end up unopened in the basement or attic. * Check expiration dates. Gift certificates and cards for particular stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates on the certificates or find gifts, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it. * Verify a business. Although Mom may love a cute boutique that just opened, verify the business before buying a gift card from it. An unpredictable economy has made it even harder for new businesses to succeed, and you don’t want Mom to be stuck with a worthless gift card should the new business not thrive. If she really likes a particular new business, take her on a shopping spree at the store instead. * Skip the chocolate overload. Flowers and chocolates are tra-

ditional Mother’s Day gifts. However, calorieconscious women may not want to be faced with the temptation of a warehouse-sized box of chocolate treats. If Mom truly loves chocolate, treat her to a gourmet piece or two, but don’t make that your main gift. * Avoid “final sale” items. It can be tempting to peruse the deepdiscount rack at Mom’s favorite store when retailers cut prices on items in anticipation of a new season. However, these sales may come with restrictions on returns or exchanges. Unless you know Mom will like what you pick out, avoid the “final sale” racks in favor of items that can be returned or exchanged. * Ask for a price match. In an effort to keep a loyal customer base, many stores will price match against competitors’ ads. Therefore, if you feel more

comfortable at a certain store, print out the advertised price and bring it to your favorite store. There’s a good chance they will give you the item for the same price. This works particularly well for tech gifts that

typically go on sale in the days leading up to a holiday or special event. There are different ways to make shopping for Mother’s Day gifts a little easier and guarantee the best experience for Mom as well.

Remember Mom on Mother’s Day May 12, 2013 Mot h

The days when single income households were the norm are long gone, as nowadays both Mom and Dad must work in order to make ends meet. That reality has left many women juggling the obligations of motherhood with the obligations of a successful career. Such a juggling act is seldom easy, and many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. * Share the responsibilities. While the days of the single-income household may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after the children and make it to all of their children’s sporting events or other school-related events. But those responsibilities should be shared so women can ensure they’re giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle such responsibilities equally. * Exercise daily. Juggling a family and a career is often stressful, and stress can have a very adverse effect on your health. * Stay involved with your child’s school. Many mothers find staying active with their children’s school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. * Take advantage of work-from-home policies. As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. * Plan ahead. Looking ahead is another way to make juggling a family and a career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it’s your night to cook.

Vanderhoof Trade Show 2013 May 10 & 11, 2013 -- Vanderhoof Arena

‘Working together in the Heart of it all!’ Hosted by the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce Pumpkin Walk

For 12 years the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the Great Pumpkin Walk, bringing to life Riverside Campground for Halloween night. Thousands of local residents attend this social evening, enjoying a free cup of hot chocolate, the carved pumpkins lining the road, the campfires where volunteers hand out candy, and the grand finale: an awe inspiring fireworks display. In past years this fun family event has helped to reduce vandalism and mischief on Halloween night. It is held every year on October 31, no matter what day of the week that is. The Pumpkin Walk starts at 5pm and the fireworks display at 8pm. The Great Pumpkin Walk is a significant event in Vanderhoof, funded entirely by the community.

Vanderhoof and Districts Co-operative Association 68th AGM

Continued from Page 7 A local project that is well underway is the building of a new building supply centre in Vanderhoof at the East side of the Co-op Mall. The chemical and open storages areas are both already completed and the foundation for the lumber area is currently being poured. Contracts have been awarded for the main hardware and supplies area. Construction is expected to begin late spring with completion within a year. The current building used for supplies is to be moved to the Bulk Plant to increase its storage and the grain storage building was donated to the local museum.

Growth of any business requires vision and a lot of hard work both by management and its governing body. Cliff Irving, General Manager, has continuously provided the vision, the hard work and the effective leadership needed to keep the Vanderhoof and Districts Co-op flourishing. Cliff will be retiring in August this year. After 47 years, he started in Vanderhoof in June 1966 bagging groceries and gradually moved up through various Co-op stores, learning and developing. He returned to Vanderhoof in 1982 to manage the Vanderhoof Co-op. We have been benefiting from his knowledge and dedication ever since. Employees were thanked for their continued hard work

and dedication. Dan O’Connor and Judy Wesner received their 5 Year Award; Valerie Gerz, Dave Irwin and Bea Turgeon received 20 Year Awards; Mark Stevenson received 30 Year Award; David Flegal received 40 Year Award; Certificate of Achievement and Training Awards were also given. Director Awards were given to Colleen Erickson for 12 Years; Kim McIvor and Cesar Isidoro for 15 Years; Rene Jones for 21 Years. Members with any questions about the Annual Meeting or operations, please call Cliff Irving, General Manger or Glenn Currie, Controller at the Vanderhoof Co-op Administration Office at 1.250.567.4414 or toll free at 1.877.567.4414.

Ruby Ellen van Andel Community Cancer Clinic In 2006 Mr. Henry van Andel approached St John Hospital’s HSA (Health Services Administer) with a wish to donate $200,000.00 to local health care. Mr. van Andel’s wish was for the funds to remain in Vanderhoof and at that time St John Hospital Auxiliary Society was selected to manage these funds. Mr. van Andel’s decision was to have the monies set aside for an Oncology Unit in Vanderhoof. Northern Health supported this initiative and following much planning, the Oncology Clinic opened in 2008. The Clinic opened with 4 active patients and they have grown from giving 262 chemotherapy medications in 2008 to 726 in 2012. The clinic has now been open for five years thanks to the very generous donation. The Clinic provides treatment, symptom management and follow-up care. Cancer patients from Fort St James, Fraser Lake, Burns Lake and Vanderhoof benefit from closer-to-home treatment. ARO Automotive gave a $25,000 donation and Gord Armstrong presented the cheque for the Cancer clinic to Marilyn Moore from St John Hospital Auxiliary (picture). The Fraser Lake support group has raised over $30,000 in a couple of years and has donated $10,000 to “outfit” a room at the Kordyban Lodge in Prince George for patients that need radiation. Another $10,000 is being held for the Cancer clinic for a new IV pump. The Rose Bowl florist in Vanderhoof has brought the clinic a fresh vase of flowers every week for the last FIVE years. This is enjoyed immensely by patients and staff alike. The Vanderhoof Golfers Association donates money made from several events over the year and they have also done this consistently for the last four years. Chona Dick, Oncology Manager said, “The purpose of the tea was to honor our patients and their families for the struggle they contend with and to thank the community for ongoing support.” Chona commented “The wall was decorated with a sun, grass, flowers and birds to represent donated monies and the butterflies shown are in honor of those that have passed on that were treated at our clinic.” “We enjoyed a few speeches made by some of our survivors. There are so many to thank, so I would like to thank all of the communities for all

A celebratory tea was served for previous clients and generous donors Friday, April 19, 2013 to celebrate the cancer clinic turning five years old. Henry van Andel (pictured in the wheelchair). their support and strength.” The Senior girls volleyball team came and served coffee and tea, for the event and then the Sinkut View grade 7 travel club came for clean up. Thank you also to the Village Inn, Debbie Spencer, Sinkut View and ARO Automotive who made donations to the tea and also the support from April Hughes, of the HSA for Omineca.
