LOCAL ELECTION ISSUES
Hospital promises
All-candidates meeting happens without Liberal JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Weeks away from the opening of the $17 million Oceanside Health Centre, provincial election candidates are talking about a hospital for the Parksville Qualicum constituency. A member of the audience at an all-candidates forum Sunday asked for direct answers from Barry Avis (NDP) and David Coupland (Conservatives) regarding improved health services for the region. The candidates were asked to answer if they will, or will not, fight for a hospital in their first year of office if elected. Both Avis and Coupland said “I will,” but both put caveats on their MAY 14 answers when interviewed by The NEWS after the meeting. “Not a hospital,” said Avis. “The plan from (a 2004 report) was not a large hospital, a small hospital, 30-beds. And not in the first year. I’ve talked with (NDP Leader) Adrian (Dix) and I’ve talked with (NDP health critic) Mike Farnworth and they say they are willing to support me on having that facility (the OHC) get to the point where the local residents are happy with the service they are getting and I think of that as a small hospital.” Coupland also clarified his response after the meeting. “What I meant was emergency care facility — transitioning to a hospital.”

RESCUE ON THE ROCK
Key people coming to Qualicum NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
When you’re engaged in a life-or-death search situation, you want to know the people you’re working with have the chops to do what needs to be done — quickly and efficiently. That’s one of the key reasons search and rescue technicians from the length of Vancouver Island will be converging on the Qualicum Beach area early next month for the third bi-annual Rescue on the Rock. The event, said Arrowsmith Search and Rescue spokesperson Ken Neden said the exercise will involve as many as 50 out-of-town searchers taking part in joint rescue drills on Sunday, June 2. “We do this every couple of years,” Neden said. “It’s
mainly to practice skills and work with other teams with mutual aid. We have fun, too. We get to know more people from different groups, working together. We do mutual aid calls fairly regularly on the Island and you’re more likely to call on someone if you know what they can do.” The event, he added, will be held mainly in the area of Little Qualicum Falls and will involve a combination of rope and river rescue. “We’ll pick a spot and have someone in distress in or by the river and the scenario will see us have to lower rescue teams to them and bring them up a cliff,” Neden said. “For the ground searchers the exercise will test for probability of detection, where we will hide objects in an area and see how many of them they can find.”

stArtinG Point Search and Rescue called to find woman Members of Arrowsmith Search and Rescue were scrambled Thursday night to find an elderly woman who had wandered off in the Coombs area. Spokesperson Ken Neden said police called in the searchers just before 7 p.m. after the 87-year-old Parksville woman was reported missing. The call to action was answered by 31 searchers, who fanned out on foot and in vehicles to search for the woman. She was eventually spotted at about 9 p.m. by a resident at a trailer park in Errington. She was reportedly confused but otherwise fine. — NEWS Staff
All-candidates meeting for Bowser area
Bowser and area residents will get a chance to quiz their candidates in the provincial election at an all candidates forum sponsored by the Mapleguard Ratepayers Association on May 11. The event, said association spokesperson Dianne Eddy, will take place at the Bowser Legion, starting at 7 p.m. All three candidates for the Alberni-Pacific Rim constituency, Darren DeLuca of the B.C. Liberals, Scott Fraser of the NDP and Enid Mary Sangster-Kelly of the B.C. Conservatives have indicated they will attend. Eddy said residents should prepare their questions in advance of the meeting. The format will give 30 seconds for questions and two minutes for candidates to respond. Phillip Spencer of the Parksville United Church will moderate this forum. — NEWS Staff

They served at sea
Qualicum Beach and Parksville Legions mark one of the most crucial fights of the Second World War — the Battle of the Atlantic NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
I
t was the longest running battle of the entire Second World War and the one that kept British Prime Minister Winston Churchill awake at night. He knew if the Battle of the Atlantic was lost, everything else would collapse, like a house of cards. The Battle of the Atlantic was waged from Sept. 3, 1939 to May 4, 1945 and saw thousands of sailors go to a watery grave — the vast majority of them from the merchant marine. Keeping the lifeline open from North America to Britain was crucial to the war effort, as an average of 90,000 tons of war materials was delivered every single day — keeping the island nation in the fight. The battle saw a remarkable growth in Canada’s shipping industry, with the 37 merchant ships growing to 175 by war’s end and the dozen or so warships growing to 378. These warships escorted the merchant sailors between North America and Great Britain, but their presence was in no way a guarantee of safety. In 1942 for instance, the Allies lost 24,000 tons of shipping each and every day. While the

vast majority of these were merchant ships, 25 major Canadian warships were also sent to the bottom, along with seven minor vessels. At Sunday’s ceremony the crucial contribution of the Canadian airforce was also highlighted. Canadian air crews escorted the convoys to the mid-Atlantic, keeping a watchful eye for enemy activity from above. Again, the cost of their valor was high. Over the course of the battle, 145 aircraft were shot down and 543 aircrew were killed. The contributions of both branches of the service were symbolized by the ranks of both Air Cadets and Sea Cadets — along with members of the Navy League — who lined the walls during the service, which was conducted by Padre Brian Kirby. As well, 19 Wing Comox sent its Aurora aircraft roaring overhead in a dramatic flyby. The evocative ceremony was attended by mayors Chris Burger from Parksville and Teunis Westbroek from Qualicum Beach, along with Regional District of Nanaimo director Bill Veenhof and RCMP Staff Sergeant Brian Hunter, Cdr. Gerry Powell from CFMETR and Col. Jim Benninger, from 19 Wing, Comox.

MAYWORKS EVENT IN PARKSVILLE
Empty Bowl Soup Kitchen May 14 The event has raised more than $28,000 over the past eight years NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
More well-off residents of the Central Island likely haven’t gone to a soup kitchen, but that’s exactly what Jaynie Starr and the rest of the Mayworks team are hoping they’ll do on Saturday, May 14. That’s when Mayworks and the Oceanside Coalition for Strong Communities present their ninth annual Empty Bowl Soup Kitchen at the Parksville
Community and Conference Centre. Mayworks is a yearly festival of labour and the arts that is held in several communities across Canada. The Empty Bowls event is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army food bank and features local potters making unique bowls, into which soup donated by top-flight local restaurants is poured. “It’s a great coming together of many different people and businesses and artisans and cooks in our community,” Starr said. “We have 300 bowls donated and Tigh-Na-Mara, Lefty’s, Herons, Bradleys and Alain Bernard make and donate the soup. The com-
munity members purchase tickets for $15 and they get to keep the bowl and sample the donated soup.” The event has strong local support, raising $28,000 over the past eight years for the food bank. “It’s a very successful and well-attended event,” Starr said, noting as many as 250 people have taken part, although organizers are prepared for 300. This year, music will be provided by the Bluegrass Jammers. Quality Foods is donating a cake. Tickets for the event, which runs from 4-6 p.m. can be picked up at Mulberry Bush Book Stores and Cranky Dog Music, as well as at the door.
POLICE COMPLETE INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED INCIDENTS IN QUALICUM BEACH
‘Not criminal in nature’ says RCMP ‘The Oceanside RCMP’s involvement in this matter is now concluded’
RCMP have determined the events referred to them by Mayor Teunis Westbrook last month, allegedly involving members of the Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department, were not criminal in nature. Oceanside RCMP made no call to The NEWS about the release and called no news conference in relation to this announcement. There were also no calls or news release from the town. This, from the Oceanside RCMP website, posted on Mon-
day, May 6, and attributed to detachment commander Staff Sergeant Brian Hunter: “On April 9, 2013, the Town of Qualicum Beach requested assistance from the Oceanside RCMP. The town had received information pertaining to historical, alleged incidents related to the Qualicum Beach Fire Department. There was concern that the alleged incidents may have been ‘criminal in nature’. The Oceanside RCMP investigated the alleged incidents and determined that the events in question were not criminal in nature. The Oceanside RCMP’s involvement in this matter is now concluded.” — NEWS Staff

Stockwell Day in Nanoose to support Liberal Stilwell Day said it takes a generation to pay for four years of the NDP LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
A former federal Conservative cabinet member was in Nanoose Bay Saturday throwing his weight behind provincial B.C. Liberal Party candidate Michelle Stilwell. “People have said to me: ‘you’re a federal Conservative, what are you doing voting B.C. Liberals?,” said Stockwell Day. “People, for instance, like my mother. It is actually not against the law to vote federal Conservative and B.C. liberal — I’ve been doing it for awhile and I haven’t been arrested yet.” In front of a gathering of about 25 people Saturday at Fairwinds Golf Course, Day said there are no linkages between the federal Conservative party and the B.C. Conservative party. He is volunteering, he said, to support the B.C. Liberals, and spoke at a B.C. Liberal convention back in October to show his support for the party. Day has recently been dropping in on various B.C. communities to share why he thinks the B.C. Liberals should win the May 14 election and what he perceives to be the perils of an NDP victory. “It takes a generation to pay for four years of NDP government,” he said. “It’s a total lack of economic understanding that those policies will always pull an economy down.” Day said he was the minister of finance in Alberta for a number of years when the NDP was
in power in B.C. and he saw many people fleeing B.C. as a result, he said. He said he talked to B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins last year and asked him what he was doing splitting the vote, when he knows he can’t win. “[John Cummins] said: ‘I know that. I know that a vote for the B.C. Conservatives may well split the vote and will have NDP go up the middle and maybe even win, but in four years people will be so fed up with the NDP that they’ll throw them out.’ I said: ‘John that’s not a vision’.” Day said he also strongly supports Christy Clark as premier, saying he has seen her in action on maY 14 both the provincial and national stage. Despite what the media reported, he said, she got fast results when she demanded that five conditions be met in order for B.C. to allow the Northern Gateway Pipeline to go through the province. A few weeks after that announcement, the federal government hustled out to B.C. and tightened up the federal rules on waterways, tankers and other environmental measures, he told the crowd. Day said when people tell him they’re mad about certain decisions the B.C. Liberals have made in the past he tells them “party’s are made up of humans, humans are imperfect, all parties will make mistakes. I was leader of the Canadian Alliance, we made some mistakes.” Michelle Stilwell thanked Day for the introduction on Saturday and went on to explain why she was running for the B.C. Liberal Party, and answered questions.

Stilwell’s absence noted
continued from page a1
During their responses to the question from the floor during the meeting, Avis suggested a first step to improving health services here would be to have better equipped — called Level 3 — ambulances in Parksville Qualicum Beach. Avis called the ambulances “basically an emergency room on wheels.” Coupland, a radiologist who has worked in the health care field in the Mid-Island region for 17 years, disagreed with that characterization. “An ambulance is not an emergency room on wheels, let’s be clear about that,” he said. B.C. Liberal candidate Michelle Stilwell did not attend the forum, which was attended by about 100 people at the Knox United Church and sponsored by the Oceanside Coalition for Integral Care Advocacy. Stilwell’s camp said the candidate was attending an event at the Child Development Centre in Nanaimo and Sunday’s moderator Kay Howard
said Stilwell indicated in early April she would not be able to attend Sunday’s forum. (The NEWS erred in reporting Thursday that all candidates had been confirmed for Sunday’s forum. All three were confirmed for last night’s forum at the Parksville civic centre — see Thursday’s edition of The NEWS for a report on that meeting.) Stilwell’s absence Sunday did not go unnoticed by members of the audience or Avis, who noted Stilwell was also absent from an all-candidates forum recently at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach. “This isn’t the first time it’s only been David and I sitting here,” said Avis. “I just wanted to point that out.” For the most part Sunday, aside from the talk of the hospital, Coupland and Avis stuck to the same answers they have been giving for the last two months in response to questions about the province’s finances, resources, health care, skills training and the environment.

Plants erase park past Footprints of demolished buildings to return to nature NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
Visitors to Moorecroft Regional Park may have a tough time recognizing the site, after a small army of volunteers descended on Monday to help erase the footprints of demolished buildings at the site. Regional District of Nanaimo regional park planner Margaret Paridaen said just over a dozen volunteers joined park staff and Streamside Native Plants owner Richard Wahlgren as they put 1,000 native plants into the footprints of demolished buildings. “Moorecroft Regional Park has been undergoing major changes now that it’s under RDN control and the biggest project lately has been to remove some of the older, unsafe buildings that are not in the mandate of the regional park anymore,” she said. “There were about 18 buildings removed over the last month and
a half and we are planting native plants to reclaim the land to become more of a day use nature park.” The volunteers planted Douglas fir, grand fir, Oregon grape, salal, skunk cabbage, lady fern and Saskatoon berry — all species that thrive in the rest of the park. “We also worked with woody debris,” she said. “Volunteers collected woody debris and placed it in pockets, to act like refuges for little critters that like to run from one hiding spot to another. It became like a woodland garden and the finished effect is really nice.” Moorecroft was originally a summer camp run by the United Church of Canada. However, the church found itself unable to continue running programs at the Nanoose Bay site and eventually entered into an agreement with the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Nature Conservancy that saw the camp sold to the RDN for $4,800,000 and turned into a regional park. A covenant was also placed on the property to ensure it remains in a natural state.

Talk of the town
W
e like to reflect in this space what people are talking about, what has them glued to their TVs, filling the Internet chat forums, providing fodder for drama and emotion. The B.C. election? Puhleese. Today, it’s the Stanley Cup playoffs. Life changing? No. Important to the future of the province? No. A topic of conversation more than anything related to politics? Absolutely. At time of writing, the Vancouver Canucks were on the edge of elimination, down 3-0 to the San Jose Sharks. As usual, the Canucks had an impressive regular season, winning their (ultra-weak) division and garnering a top-three seed. Also as usual (despite a run to the Cup final a couple of years ago when everything fell into place for them opponent-wise), the Canucks are showing they are a team built for the regular season and not what really matters, the run for the Cup. They have played nine periods of hockey against the Sharks and aside from the third period Sunday night, their goaltending has been solid. The fact much of the discussion still centres around Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider is bewildering and is a clear indication both GM Mike Gillis and head coach Alain Vigneault have done a poor job focussing on what really ails this team. And what’s that? Well, we’re glad you asked. The leadership group on this team, the ones that excel in the regular season, do not have what it takes mentally or physically to compete when the stakes are higher in the playoffs. Have the Sedin brothers even played the first three games? If Ryan Kesler isn’t the most annoying, disrespect-the-game player we’ve ever seen, he’s close. Did anyone other than Gillis think deadline acquisition Derek Roy was going to change his playoff stripes (zero goals in his last 10 playoff games)? Now, if the Canucks win the next four games and take this series, we will be the first to say we are wrong. But we don’t see that happening. Meanwhile, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto are literally fighting and scraping for every inch of ice in their respective series. There’s lots of room on their bandwagons for Canucks fans who want to see what playoff intensity is all about. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters Over the line As a member of the Qualicum Beach Residents Association, I was insulted at Coun. Dave Willie’s latest episode of conspiracy and paranoia (The NEWS, May 4), inferring that its members do the bidding of the Mayor Teunis Westbroek and Coun. Scott Tanner and that the organization is undemocratic — serious allegations that are simply not true. I‘m confident in my ability and those of other members to think for ourselves. I was at the last meeting he referred to. A young woman suggested that evening meetings would attract a more diverse group, particularly those who were at work during the day. It was well received and taken to heart. I do believe that the QBRA has held some evening meetings in the past. I joined the QBRA because I am a taxpaying resident and believe that we all should take an interest in what happens in our town. Individually and through our organization, we should have the ability to express our concerns where decisions are about to be made that may effect the quality of living or the financial viability of the town. It does not mean that decisions will always go our way, but that we can express our views so that local town staff and council are aware of them.

hOnOurable thing You recently reported that both Mayor Teunis Westbroek and Coun. Mary Brouilette felt that recovery from the malfunction of the Qualicum Beach council has begun. In your issue of May 2 your front-page story is yet another diatribe from Coun. Dave Willie, denigrating the mayor (and Coun. Tanner) and insulting the Qualicum Beach Residents Association (and by association the large number of citizens who sympathise with its views). Some recovery. It’s the same old, same old. It’s the Willie way or the highway. Eighteen months of this malicious heckling is more than enough. We are constrained to the point where we can merely ask Coun. Willie to do the honourable thing and resign. He could then deliver his vitriolic contributions to town affairs, just as the rest of us do, without destroying the town’s peace and harmony.

birds kill birds This is in regards to several recent letters to the editor about cats being responsible for killing birds. Most people do not realize how many birds are killed by other birds. Crows, ravens, falcons, hawks, owls and eagles all kill other birds. Songbirds make up a large part of the daily diet of falcons and hawks. Most of these killings are not witnessed by people and any evidence left behind is usually blamed on cats. Bald Eagles kill ducks, gulls, cormorants, etc. At present, there are two Merlin falcons residing in Craig Bay and they kill songbirds every day (see photo).

Make votes count I want my vote to count. I am reading in the local, provincial and national media that the election in our riding is going to be a close race between all three candidates. I have attended all-candidate meetings and congratulate candidates for choosing to run. I want a strong representative who has an established party behind them. The B.C. Conservatives are not offering that for me. David Coupland seems a nice man and speaks well but the bottom line is the B.C. Conservative Party itself has no strength. I hope that we have a record number of voters turn out this election. This is no time for apathy. I want to encourage young people especially to get out and vote. Consider who you want to represent you. Will it be someone who is retired or someone in their prime years, with abundant energy and direct experience with communicating with all generations effectively? Yes, I am a Michelle Stilwell supporter. I support her because I know her, I admire her and I am confidant she will be fully invested in making sure the needs of all age groups in our community will be addressed. She meets my criteria for what I want from my MLA. Her experience on the world stage and her impressive network of contacts will help her be even more effective. I admire her enough to work on her campaign when I had in fact decided previously to not get involved with this election. I encourage everyone to consider who will best represent them and be sure to get out and vote. Wendy Maurer Qualicum Beach

I want to thank editor John Harding for his balanced editorial in the April 30 edition of The NEWS (‘Not fully charged’). I just wanted to add some detail to a couple of his points, mainly that the Chevy Volt only gets 50 km per charge and that it takes threefour hours to charge up. The Volt was designed for commuter use and has received many awards (too many to list here) relating to this technology. According to the vehicle’s literature: “this vehicle is unique in the world of electric cars in that you can drive gas-free and emission free for up to 60 kilometres, then enjoy the spontaneity of extending your range, thanks to the gas-powered electric generator that turns on-seamlessly — so you will never experience the ‘range anxiety’ that the drivers of other electric cars have to live with.” City of Parksville planning director Blaine Russell has been using the vehicle exactly as intended. He plugs it in while at work or while sleeping and drives knowing that he is not burning a drop of fuel and by his own assertion he went 2,000 km on a single tank. If Russell finds himself in a position where the car battery is discharged, he would not be in a position beholden to a charging station as you assert. He just has to start the vehicle and the single cylinder generator will generate enough power
to get him to his destination. It may be worth mentioning as well that the government of the day extended grants to Parksville City for charging stations and also extends a $5,000 rebate to a consumer when purchasing a vehicle like the Chevy Volt to offset some the R&D cost to an early adopter. andy Lankester GeneraL ManaGer, Harris Oceanside cHevrOLet Buick GMc Parksville
call it veenhofville Re: major development proposed for Deep Bay. This development will require changes to the Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) and Official Community Plan (OCP), yet the detailed Baynes Sound Investments (BSI) development project plan has never been made locally available to residents despite repeated requests to Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Director Bill Veenhof that a copy be placed in the Bowser Library. It would cost $80 to copy it to a CD and make it easily available. Is the plan so bad that it is being hidden? The RGS states that rural areas would not be allowed higher density unless public services for water and sewage were available. Changing the RGS would leave all un-serviced rural areas in the RDN vulnerable to this pattern of development. Besides, this is a closed strata development (possibly gated) and would be an oxymoron to a village centre. So what it is really? The Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) land owned by the developer is to be used as the waste site for the 700-unit development using spray sewage. This site is over the shallow designated aquifer (50 m deep) currently used for drinking water. This may be allowed because the land is in ALR and could be used for agriculture. Read between the lines: the developer wants this land out of ALR. We remember the pig farm suggested by the previous owners. A likely first phase of the development (and cheap to do) would be the 296-unit strata RV Park. Local RV parks are required by the RDN to lock their gates because of the six-month rule. This rule was established to prevent substandard living conditions with families living in the back of a camper truck. The staff report states that it is unlikely to expect the RDN to enforce this rule for the BSI development. Did Veenhof read the staff report before voting? This development would be called urban sprawl if there was an urban area to sprawl from. Maybe it should be called Bowser Sprawl as Deep Bay and Bowser areas overlap. And don’t call this development Deep Bay — it is nothing more than a displaced high-density strata development out in the bush that some developer is calling a “green village.” However, it has neither the form nor character of Deep Bay. We refer to it as Veenhofville. dianne eddy Deep Bay

Think about the consequences
I
’m concerned that many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability. Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev-up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews and or by just saying “no,” driving investment to other provinces and other countries. We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe. During their time in government, North America suffered through a major recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the U.S. government, allowing B.C. taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by the Campbell government was badly handled. There have been other gaffes and ill-thought-out policies. And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a mountain of debt. I’m not asking that you agree with me, only that you think through the full consequences of your choice carefully. And then get out and vote on May 14. Special Qualicum Beach garden in May 11-12 tour NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
Fans of the Mount Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society will have the opportunity May 11-12 to view some topflight amateur gardens, but they’ll also be able to get an eyeful of the handi-
K
work of a professional. That’s because renowned gardener and columnist Helen Chestnut has agreed to let her Qualicum Beach garden stand as the special bonus garden on the self-guided tour. Chestnut runs a regular gardening column in the Victoria Times Colonist, doling out advice for gardeners perplexed about why their plants — both vegetables and ornamentals — may not
be doing as well as they might. In this event though, she’ll be showing off what results can be achieved when everything is done just right. Other gardens on the tour include lush properties in both Qualicum Beach and Dashwood. Tickets are $15, with children under the age of 12 free. For more info: 250752-3545 or 250-752-7369.

Region highlighted in airline magazine
Pacific Rainforest Adventure Tours was contacted last month by York Pijahn, a freelance journalist from Germany visiting Vancouver Island on assignment to produce an article for an international airline magazine. His task was to see and photograph places for travelers to hike where they could experience rainforests, beaches and whales. The locally owned company conducts a regularly scheduled
day trip once a week departing from Parksville and Qualicum Beach to Ucluelet and Tofino. The journalist selected this company and their tours as his main source of information about the region. The article will be published in June in Lufthansa’s Woman’s World magazine. About Pacific Rainforest Adventure Tours: Gary Murdock has 35 years ex-
perience with the B.C. Forest Service, and partner Ronda’s interests include First Nation studies, natural history and birding. Both are members of the Arrowsmith Naturalists and are involved in local conservation efforts. They live in Parksville. Pacific Rainforest Adventure Tours has been operating since 1999. — Submitted by Gary and Ronda Murdock

BUSINESS PROFILE
Hilliers Gourmet Foods: sausage and more Ten years in Hilliers and 25 in the business, Albert Kleinschnitz still loves the work AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Hilliers Gourmet Foods is marking 30 years this year and current owner and master butcher Albert Kleinschnitz and his original employee are both marking their 10th year there. Kleinschnitz pointed out all the round numbers lining up this year, including this being his 25th year in the business, having started his apprenticeship in Bavaria, Germany a quarter century ago, following family tradition. Both his father and grandfather were master butchers, and after growing up at his father’s hip around the shop, Kleinschnitz earned his masters in the industry in 1994, a degree that doesn’t exist in Canada, giving him a wide grounding in everything from meat cutting and sausage making to how to train others and run a business. “I’m a third generation guy, I like to do it the old fashioned way, everything’s made from scratch,” he said on a recent tour of his shop on Highway 4 in Hilliers. But while he is rooted in old traditions, he is excited about his modern

equipment and time-saving technology, including a two-year-old sausage smok-
er which can cook, smoke, wash and cool all in one computerized stainless
steel machine that saves them five steps. Kleinschnitz moved to Canada, Alberta originally, from Germany in 1999 and found this area while on vacation with friends. “I fell in love with the country,” he said, “but I still go back and have family in Germany.” He brings his connection to his home country to his work. While he sells a variety of common meat cuts his eyes light up when talking about the wide variety of European sausages and cuts they sell. They have Alberta beef and local pork and free range chicken and some lamb, and they do a lot of custom cuts for people bringing in their own meat. They also have landjaggers, schinkenspeck and lachschinken, not to mention the bauchspeck, suelze and griebenschmalz. He said the other European brands of treats and sauces he sells bring in many regular customers looking for a sentimental connection to their home country. Local house sales stable Sales up 7% across Vancouver Island, prices up 4% here With housing sales dropping on much of Vancouver Island, the number of units sold in Parksville Qualicum Beach in April, 2013 compared to last year was unchanged, while prices were up here four per cent to $404,889 according to new Multiple Listing Service (MLS) data released by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). Across the Island sales were up seven per cent while average sale prices were down six per cent. The average price of a single family home in the VIREB region in April, 2013 was $323,973 but 410 units were sold, 27 more than last April. “It appears consumer confidence is growing based on the fact that Realtors have definitely seen an increase in market activity over the last several weeks,” suggested VIREB president Gary Gray. “With stable pricing, reasonably strong inventory levels and historically low mortgage rates, buyers are realizing that this is a good time to buy
a home. As each area is unique, it’s important to contact your local Realtor to better understand market conditions in your area.” As of the end of April, 2013, there were 2,773 single family homes available on the MLS within VIREB’s coverage area, down from the 3,007 at the end of April, 2012. The average sale prices across VIREB’s six geographic areas saw Campbell River up two per cent to $283,032, the Comox Valley was down five per cent to $341,211, Nanaimo was down nine per cent $334,486, Port Alberni/West Coast was down 14 per cent at $209,625 and the Cowichan Valley was down four per cent to $334,680. In terms of unit sales year to year for April, there continued to be a wide disparity between the different areas; for example, Campbell River recorded a 46 per cent increase while Cowichan Valley decreased nine per cent. — Submitted by VIREB

Donald James Strang Born February 19, 1940 passed away after a brief battle with cancer on April 23, 2013. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, May 10, 2013 at 11am. Burial to follow at Yates Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Church of The Ascension; 887 Wembly Rd., Parksville, BC, V9P 2E6.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dad. John joined the Royal Navy at age 13, graduating from Dartmouth in 1944 having won the King George VI gold medal. He served on HMS Newcastle and HMS Berwick during WW2. Upon leaving the Royal Navy, John won an Ajax scholarship to McGill where he obtained a first class honours degree in Maths and Physics, assisted in building the first cyclotron in Canada, then graduated in medicine in 1954 winning Gold Medals in Clinical Subjects and in Obstetrics & Gynecology and the J Francis Williams Fellowship in Medicine. He interned at the Montreal General and Shaughnessy Hospitals, finishing his post graduate training at the Toronto General Hospital, passing the FRCP (C) in 1959. John was appointed Instructor in Medicine at UBC in 1960 (full professor 1973) and to the Attending staff of the Vancouver General Hospital. He developed the first dialysis unit in BC (and the second in Canada) in 1964, was involved in developing the kidney transplant programme, which performed the first transplant in BC. In 1967 he was instrumental in developing one of the first centres in the world, allowing patients to treat themselves at home for hemo or peritoneal dialysis. John was a founding member of the Canadian Society of Nephrology, Chair of the Medical Board of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, and Director of the BC Medical Association. He retired to Saltspring Island in 1990 and spent his last years in Victoria and Parksville. Survived by his first wife Nancy (nee Beattie) and his children: David (Jane Walker, children Emma, Catherine, Susan); Biz; Barbara (Harry McLaughlin and Tianay); Robert (Kristi Rivait, children Gloria and Reid) and Janet (Paul McNeill, children James and Sarah), niece Margaret Backus and nephew Michael Pocock in England and second wife Barbara (Bristol). An avid sailor and fisherman, dad was happiest on the water with full sails, tight lines and a book by his side. He was very proud of his children and we are very proud of him! We love you, dad. Our family would like to thank the staff of Stanford Place for their care and compassion. Dad was a strong supporter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada and The Steelhead Society and would welcome donations to either, or your charity of choice. A Memorial service will be held at a later date.

DEEP BAY MARINE FIELD STATION
VIU arts student designs new T-shirt When Brian Kingzett was looking for a new, unique t-shirt design to help promote the Deep Bay Marine Field Station he knew who to call. Kingzett contacted Vancouver Island University visual arts professor Gregory Ball to see if his printmaking students could help. “It was a great opportunity for students to test their skills,” says Ball. About 20 students put their design skills to work in a friendly class competition. “Students in printmaking go through rigorous instruction learning how to develop sketches into high quality prints,” explains Ball. “Brian Kingzett and I thought it was a great idea for the students to visit VIU’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station and get a complete tour of the facility. It’s the kind of research that every artist does before

they begin to work.” Ball says he wanted the students to recognize how crucial it is to know a subject really well before they put pen to paper or in this case ink to screen. “They came back from the field trip totally inspired and ready to work on their ideas for the project,” says Ball. “It was exciting to see how each student had their own unique concept about Deep Bay and how they were able to execute their imagery using the screen printing techniques they learned over the term.” Several prints were short-listed and the winning design by student Amanda Key was selected. Key was presented with her award April 23 — a $150 gift certificate for art supplies at the VIU bookstore, plus fame and glory. “Deep Bay is a beautiful place and it was wonderful to visit,” says Key, who

will return to VIU in September to complete the final year of the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Graphic Design program. “I am happy that my design was chosen to represent somewhere so interesting.” Ball says the class produced “some exceptional designs” and it was not easy selecting a winner. He often looks for experiential hands-on learning opportunities for his students. “I think it is really important that, as instructors, we are open to new possibilities for our students and we are willing to adapt our curriculum to explore new ways of teaching and learning,” he says. T-shirts sporting the new design will be sold at the VIU Bookstore and at the Deep Bay Marine Field Station with all proceeds going towards the public education program at the station. — Submitted by VIU

CPGA Golf
‘Lefty’ ready for life on the road
Ballenas Secondary School graduate Kylie Frederick heading off to play in the CPGA JAMES CL ARKE sports@pqbnews.com
‘Lefty’ makes her pro debut this month, and don’t let her easy nature fool you — she means business. Born in Vancouver and the youngest of three girls, Kylie Frederick and her family moved to Parksville when she was nine months old. A Ballenas Secondary School grad, she started golfing at seven. “I used to play a lot of basketball and baseball and stuff and then when I was about 13, 14, I decided to take up golf competitively. I just wanted to get away from the team aspect and get more individual,” she explained easily from the patio at Arrowsmith Golf and Country Club recently where she’s worked herself up to club pro. In 2004, already an active member of the junior program at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort, she was part of that first class when the Brent Morrison Golf Academy moved to ‘the Glen from Crown Isle. She spent four years at the academy fine-tuning her game, and from there went on to spend two years south of the border on a golf scholarship at Oklahoma City University, where she and her Oklahoma City Stars’ teammates were ranked No. 1 in the NAIA and won two (count’em two) national championships. She spent her final year of university golf closer to home with UVic, helping lead the lady Vikes to a second place finish at the Canadian University/College Championships in 2009. Fast forward to last June and Frederick, 24, earned her CPGA pro card in Williams Lake at what would prove to be her final BC Am. She had to break 80 twice over the tourney to attain her card — she got it done with a 76 and a 75. “I’ve always wanted to play events, try some tours and what not. I just love to play and be competitive, so…” Frederick makes her pro debut at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen May 13-15 as part of the first stop of the CN Women’s Tour. As a card carrying member of the CPGA, she now can work and teach at golf courses “which I enjoy doing as well.”

Local lefty Kylie Frederick makes her CPGA pro debut this month.
There are four events on the tour including the final all of which she hopes to attend, and come September Frederick will travel to Florida for Q school to obtain her player status on the LPGA Futures Tour which would allow her to play in more events in North America “and all over the world. That’s my goal.” A southpaw, Frederick has her nickname ‘lefty’ tattooed on the inside of her left wrist. She says her parents, aunts and uncles “have always been vey supportive. They’re so great.” “It’s a different mindset now,” she explained, adding “when you’re an amateur you’re just trying to get ex-
perience and meet professionals, just gain experience, and now it’s a lot more practicing, a lot more work.” She played down south in Arizona over the winter as part of the Cactus Tour. At Arrowview she runs the ladies and mens night, gives lessons. She works about 40 hours a week there “and I also teach outside that, plus I practice every day for a few hours.” Locals that have gone this path before her include of course Nanoose Bay’s Shelly Stouffer, a former pro and well traveled ‘road warrior’ that just recently got her amateur status back. New hockey program coming to Parksville JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
There is a new program in town, and organizers want to get the word out. “It’s never been offered in Oceanside before,” Carla Pilton said of the new program called Adaptive Hockey, “and we just want to let everyone know about this opportunity,” she said of the program for people with special needs, both cognitive and physical. Last Wednesday arena staff provided the public an opportunity to view this unique new program which they will be offering in the fall. According to the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Valerie McNutt, “Adaptive Hockey is a hockey program for adults with disabilities and gives them the opportunity to play Canada’s game in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere.”
Wednesday’s event showcased the Nanaimo Eagles, a group that has been attending the program in Nanaimo which has improved their skills so much they are looking for another team to play against. The Adaptive Hockey program in Nanaimo started up three years ago with four participants — that number has grown to 19 now. “Thus, the start of our new program,” said McNutt. Pilton, ‘the driving force behind this new program,’ will be coaching the program with her daughter Lindsay when it starts up in the fall. “It’s open to male and females, teenagers and adults. You don’t need to know how to skate, just as long as you’re steady on your feet. The focus is on fun,” said Pilton, adding “our ultimate goal is to eventu-

ince, and that’s in the Interior. For more information call Carla at 250752-3848.

local hockey
Girls off to U18 tournament Two local players among just 14 chosen from Island JAMES CL ARKE sports@pqbnews.com
You can add two more names to the growing list of female hockey players from these parts playing the game they love at a high level. Enter Beth Goodman and Celine Tardiff — two local girls that have been selected to suit up at the prestigious U18 Girls B.C. Cup. A big accomplishment to be sure, only a select group of young B.C. athletes are chosen for this event. Goodman, a Grade 10 student at Ballenas Secondary School, has been playing hockey for seven years. ‘Goody’ to her teammates, she played defence this past season with both the Oceanside Red Rave Midget Boys house team and also on the Oceanside Icebreakers female house team, but was selected to the B.C. Cup as a forward. There were no tryout camps for the U18 Girls BC Cup — players were scouted all over province and the chosen few were invited to lace up in the B.C. Cup slated for Salmon Arm May 8-12. Eighty girls from all over B.C. were selected, and will be divided into four teams. From this tournament 24 players will be selected to go to Team B.C.’s summer training camp where they will vie for a spot on the National U18 Girls team that will compete in Sweden at the upcoming U18 Girls World Championships. While Goodman doesn’t have a lot of experience playing forward, she does have some, she said, explaining how last year she made the Island’s U16 Girls B.C. Winter Games team as a forward. “That was really fun, a really good experience,” she said, adding “I’ve kind of always played wherever they need me to play.” The first two days are for the teams to practice together. Worth noting is that there were only 14 girls from the Island chosen to compete in the B.C. Cup, and only three of those actually played on the Island — the rest of the girls are from hockey academy’s in the Interior. Goody said she got word she’d been chosen to the tournament just before she left to volunteer at the U16 Girls B.C. Cup in Duncan the end of March. “I was hoping,” she said easily when asked if she thought she’d made the team, “but being only 15 and being a first year (Midget player) I didn’t really expect it. When I got home and my parents told me, I just got overwhelmed and started crying,” she said. “It was a great feeling.” Asked about her longterm goals, the 5’6” sparkplug sure sounded certain. “I’m trying really hard to get a scholarship for university,” she said. “And of course one day be on the Olympic team.” The NEWS wasn’t able to connect with Tardiff, who is in Penticton preparing for the tournament, but the girls Icebreakers’ head coach Mike Squire had good things to say. “Celine is an all round skilled athlete that first started with the female Icebreakers program at the Peewee age level,” he explained, adding “from there she quickly developed her skills in both female recreational and regional competitive teams.” A strong skater not afraid to force the issue, Tardiff, he added, is solid on defence “and often helps lead the rush into the offensive zone.” Goodman, said, Squire, “packs a hard shot and is a very versatile player that can play both defence and forward. She is a true power forward and her biggest asset is the ability to charge through hard checking defence and drive the net.” “As a coach it is good to see these girls achieve their James clarke photos goals and makes me proud of them,” said the longtime loLocal standouts Celine Tardiff (top) and Beth Goodman cal volunteer coach. “Particularly given that they came up have been selected to participate at the upcoming U18 through the grass roots of the Oceanside female hockey Girls B.C. Cup. program.”

Frederick also points to former Island pro Leila Chartrand who worked with her for eight years. The idea of finding sponsorships “is new to me, but it’s part of the process.” When it comes to putting in the hours she says she’s adopted a Ryan Kessler “who always says when he’s not out there practicing someone else is getting better ...” And in a game that can eat you up, confidence can be a tough beast to tame at times she concedes, and as such she’s been reading up on sports psychology. The strength of her game she says “is my driver and my short game’s pretty good but it can always be better, right?” ASKED HIS TAKE on Lefty, Brent Morrison confirmed “she’s very quiet and unassuming, but in my experience with her she came across as just really happy go lucky and a very hard worker. “She was always a really good athlete, but her body became much stronger through the focused golf gym workouts which then gave her a more stable base and supported her swing better.” So does she have that spark we asked. “Definitely. For sure,” said Morrison, adding “I remember she was so gung-ho to get started. She was just excited to be part of it all, and that’s when she started competing too, so that got her juices going. “The issue with all students heading into a pro career is that it takes years to develop, and obviously those years on the road, the cost can be significant. “Everybody gets into golf because they like to play it,” he explained, adding that “at some point all young people that play the game dream of taking a shot at professional golf, and not everybody does, and the primary reason is

financial — it’s just so expensive to go on the road and give it a shot. The thing is these golfers have two choices, they can spend their whole career working in the golf industry and always wondering, or they can go for it. What I always say is that when you’re young why not go and pursue that passion and that dream because you’re never going to know unless you try. It’s way better to try and fail then to not try and wonder all your life.” “She’s following her passion, and I think it’s awesome.” And as is the case of all young golfers, it’s at this point where sponsors become paramount. “For sure,” said Morrison. “It takes pressure off the family having to financially support it all, and also what it does is it really solidifies the whole venture as a business. Now they’re a commodity with people investing in them, so they have to be accountable for the meals they eat, for the accommodation and the travel, the golf related fees ...the list is long.” The life lessons they learn, the maturity and independence they gain from going on the road ...” “I think anybody if they have the passion can overcome what tournament golf throws at you and the success is there to get. It’s so easy to quit, and so hard to make it, but the best players in the world fail daily. The difference is you knock them down, they keep getting right back up. They’re so resilient.” “It’s pretty intense,” Frederick says of the pro tour and the road ahead of her, echoing her former teacher that “you gotta commit a hundred per cent, and I think for myself, I’ve worked so hard, and golf is such a big part of my life, I figure if I don’t give it some sort of a shot then I’ll probably wake up at 40 and wonder why I didn’t try.” Anyone interested in helping sponsor Kylie can contact her at 250-927-0788 or by e-mail at kylie_frederick88@ hotmail.com.

QUILTS FOR CANCER
Paying it forward with warmth Group needs donations of materials, money in order to continue LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
A group of local women who have all been touched by cancer are giving back, one quilt at a time. They are part of a national group called Victoria’s Quilts Canada that provides free, hand-made quilts to people with cancer and those going through cancer treatments. “Often patients complain of being cold and these quilts help comfort them,” said Stephanie Szymczak, who has lost her sister, her best friend and her father, among others, to cancer. The group started in January of this year with three people and now have 27 members. The volunteers get together once a month at Nanoose Place (which they’ve been allowed to use free of charge) and then finish their projects at home. So far, they’ve delivered eight quilts to Oceanside residents, and other quilts get distributed to those identified by their mother group in the province. But the group needs donations of material and
money to continue making the quilts. Most of the fabric they’ve used to date has been donated by members. Donations of 100 per cent cotton are needed as well as money to buy backing and batting. The group is registered with Thrifty Foods’ Smile Card Program where people can purchase and use the cards to buy their groceries and then the group receives five per cent of that back as a donation from Thrifty’s. The group is also registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and can provide receipts for donations of $10 or more. Group member Colette Bright said a quilt made a difference in her life and she is paying it forward. “I just recently went through cancer treatment, my quilt group made me a beautiful quilt, and I just wanted to do the same thing for someone else because it made me feel good to have one,” she said. Member Lynn Foreman recently lost her father to cancer. “I think if he’d had a quilt to keep him warm during the day that would have been nice,” she said. Many of the other members have had or currently have friends or family members bat-

tling cancer and said making the quilts make them feel like they’re making a difference and doing something good. “They’ve all got such big hearts,” Szymczak said about her group members, “that’s the first
thing you know about them all.” Victoria’s Quilts is run solely by volunteers and its headquarters is in Ottawa. The Oceanside group is only the second of its kind in B.C., the other is in Victoria.

ART SHOW IN QUALICUM BEACH
Artist ditches fast life for alpine settings LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
An art show in Qualicum Beach that kicks off on Friday has brought renowned Canadian painter William Townsend out of retirement to partner with celebrated landscape artist Allan Dunfield. “This is a special thing we are doing,” said Townsend. “When Allen was asked to do a show, he didn’t have anybody who
complemented his work. So they talked me into doing some new paintings.” Second Time Around is being exhibited at the Artworx Gallery in Qualicum Beach from May 10 to 31, with an opening night reception Friday, May 10 from 7-10 p.m. Townsend quit an executive job in publishing at the age of 41 to give full attention to his art career. His oil paintings were starting to sell well at galleries so he knew

Notice of a PUBLIC HEARING Application No. PL2011-179 2925 Turnbull Road Electoral Area ‘H’
Pursuant to Sections 890, 891, and 892 of the Local Government Act, we advise you that a Public Hearing has been scheduled in your area concerning a proposed Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 500.382, 2013 and will be held: Date: Location: Time:
Wednesday, May 15, 2013 Lighthouse Community Hall, 240 Lion’s Way, Qualicum Bay, BC 7:00 pm
What is the Zoning Amendment about? To rezone portions of a property located at 2925 Turnbull Road shown on the map below, and outlined in bold. The existing zoning is Rural 1 (RU1), Subdivision District ‘B’ (8.0 ha minimum parcel size). The proposed amendments include a portion of the lot to become Rural 6 (RU6), Subdivision District ‘CC’ and another portion to become Rural 1 (RU1), Subdivision District ‘D’ (4.0 ha and 2.0 ha minimum parcel sizes respectively). How will this affect me? If adopted, this Amendment Bylaw would reduce the minimum parcel size permitted for subdivision. If successful, the proposed plan of subdivision includes three residential lots; two 2.0 ha lots (zoned RU6) and one 4.0 ha lot (zoned RU1). The permitted uses would remain unchanged; however, the portion of the lot to be rezoned to RU6 (the 2.0 ha lots) would be limited to one dwelling unit each. Please see attached proposed plan of subdivision. Where can I get more information? A copy of the proposed bylaw and relevant documents may be inspected at the Regional District of Nanaimo office at 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo until May 15, 2013. Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with extended hours on Wednesdays 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, excluding statutory holidays.

SKILLS TRAINING IN SCHOOLS
Middle school looking for retired trades people Adults with trades awareness are being sought to host a booth at Qualicum Beach Middle School for an event June 24. The event is called YES 2 IT (Youth Employment Skills to Industry Training) and it is designed to increase awareness of the trades. Retired tradesmen or hobbyists are needed with a willingness to talk and engage the kids. Adults will need to supply the tools, display and products for students to try a hands-on activity. FRESHWATER FISHING
Tagged fish equal reward
Anglers throughout British Columbia will be reeling in more than just their favourite fish this summer. Coinciding with its tenth anniversary, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is launching a new province-wide research project that requires the help of anglers – in return for rewards totalling more than $15,000. Beginning this month and continuing through fall 2013,
the FFSBC is marking approximately 300 of its catchable size, hatchery-raised rainbow trout with individually numbered neon-pink tags bearing a tollfree number. The trout will be released into 40 fishing lakes around the province. Anglers who catch one of these tagged fish are asked to remove the tag and call the toll-free number. Provided they have a current B.C. fishing licence and any required stamps, the
FFSBC will send the first 150 “tag reporters” a $100 reward. Subsequent tag reporters will receive gift certificates of various values for fishing supplies. The specific locations of the tagged fish releases are not being revealed, but the FFSBC confirms that fish will be released into multiple stocked lakes in each of the province’s eight fishing regions, including Vancouver Island. — NEWS Staff

Aspiring trades and technology high school students from the Parksville Qualicum Beach area represented the community well at the 19th Annual B.C. Skills Competitions held April 17 in Abbotsford. Each of the competing students had won their respective competitions at an earlier Regional Skills Canada competition which took place earlier in the month in Campbell River earning them an opportuni-
ty to compete at the provincial competition. At the competition, students demonstrated their skills in trades ranging from aircraft maintenance, hairdressing, culinary arts to robotics and many trades in between. This year, our district was represented by Brandon Atwood welding), Connor Berg (who brought home silver in culinary arts), Colson Schnider (electronics), Jasper Edge (cabinetry) and Ryan
O’Hara (who brought home bronze in the web design category). The National Skills Canada Competition will take place June 5- 8 at BC Place, the winners from this event will represent Canada at the Worlds Skills Events. School District 69 will be taking students to see the National Skills event as we begin preparing for next year’s Skills Canada Competitions. —Submitted by Luc Ouellet

Painting an escape for Dunfield

Townsend decided to retire from painting in 2005 because at 65 he was getting a little too old to do the hikes he loved, he said, and for income tax reasons. But he kept photographs of his hikes and has vivid memories of places he’s visited. He painted a series of new paintings at the Artworx Gallery for this show. Dunfield quit his career as a chef and moved to the Island 12 years ago in order to concentrate on his painting full time. He has been painting since he was a kid and in 1969 was accepted into New York City’s School of Visual Arts, where he studied for two years. He feels compelled to paint every day, and Dunfield said painting for him is an escape. It’s a chance to make everything in the world beautiful and create nice places for people to go. “My canvas is my rabbit hole,” he said. Dunfield painted with watercolours for about 20 years until he decided to switch to his current medium of choice, acrylic. He said he wasn’t getting the bold and strong re-

Allan Dunfield, left, and William Townsend with their artwork at the Artworx Gallery in Qualicum Beach. The two are exhibiting in a show at the gallery starting Friday.
sults he was looking for with watercolours. His work has now become Goring’s most popular at the Gallery. Dunfield also paints landscapes, but instead of hiking to remote locations, he spends time on beaches and in nature. He endeavours to create a mood and capture an atmosphere with his paintings, and likes to leave room for the viewer to get involved, he said. “It’s like the landscape has a personality and
you want to tap into that but it can be difficult,” he said. People will see paintings by Dunfield showing remote locations in the exhibition, as he has created some of his paintings using Townsend’s hiking photographs as reference. The two have become friends and after looking at Townsend’s photographs and hearing stories about certain destinations, Dunfield researched the areas and created his own pieces. Artworx Gallery own-
er Marlow Goring said Townsend and Dunfield have formed a great relationship, where Townsend acts as a mentor and Dunfield, the student. “It’s wonderful to see,” he said, adding Townsend is a great teacher and Dunfield a top student. This is the second show the two artists have had together. The last was in 2006 at Goring’s Frameworks Gallery and had over 200 people attend.
