More records might be broken. Monday was expected to see more hotter than usual temperatures recorded across Chilliwack. The sudden heat wave is making some folks look toward Chilliwack’s spray parks and fountains for relief. Someone tweeted City of Chilliwack officials to ask them to “please turn the spray parks on early! My kids need a place to go!” City of Chilliwack staff responded to say they were looking for a way to turn the spray parks on a few weeks early. Typically they don’t become operational before the May long weekend, and the spray park equipment in front of the Landing Leisure Centre has to undergo repairs first, said staff. But they’re actively investigating it. Environment Canada’s volunteer weather watcher, Roger Pannett says the “unusually dry and warm” conditions were expected to continue this week. Sunday hit a high of 31.5 degrees Celsius, beating its previous record of 29.4 C set on that day back in 1954. That’s a whopping 14 degrees above normal. Only Lilooet was warmer as the B.C. hotspot on May 6 with 32.8 as a high for the day. There were actually two temperature records broken on Sunday. “Beneath clear, sunny skies and moderate dry outflow winds reducing the humidity to 18 per cent on May 5, two high temperature records were recorded,” Pannett wrote in an email. The first was the maximum high, and the second was the high mean temperature record of 22.15 C breaking the previous record of 21.1 C set in 1966. “May 6 will probably be another record breaking day,” he said.

Chilliwack saw above-average economic growth in the years since the global recession hit in 2008, according to the first Conference Board of Canada’s Mid-Sized Cities Outlook 2013. That kind of impressive economic performance bucks a downward trend seen by many mid-sized Canadian cities. Chilliwack was named among one of the fastest growing mid-

sized economies in the entire country between 2005 and 2012, and it was one of only two B.C. communities aside from Duncan, to make the job-growth list. “I think it’s fabulous,” said Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “I’m grinning from ear to ear.” That kind of news on the economic front, immediately put the Chilliwack mayor in a great mood on Monday. The average annual GDP increases for Chilliwack were 6.2 per cent during that specific time-

His rival in the riding, New Democrat Gwen O’Mahony, called the decade-long promise of labour peace “fictitious.” Patti MacAhonic, NDP candidate in Chilliwack, said a 10-year contract is “demoralizing” for new teachers entering the

workforce. On the issue of bargaining rights, the NDP candidates promised to undo the “wrongs” of the Liberal government, to big applause. “The NDP is fully committed to restoring full collective bargaining rights for B.C. teachers,” said MacAhonic. “You want to restore a relationship, you need to right a wrong. You need to repeal bills 27, 28, and 29,” said O’Mahony. Sections of the 2002 bills were ruled unconstitutional by a judge in 2011, including those that prevented teachers from negotiating class size and composition. Audience members at the

debate also questioned the candidates on their commitment to higher education funding. The Liberal candidates stood firm that the government has been financially generous with teachers, and that current levels of funding for skills training are sufficient. Throness said that the government gave teachers a 16 per cent wage increase in 2006, and that the education system now costs more than it did in 2001, but with fewer students. “I think the system has received a lot of funding,” he said, adding that the relationship between teachers and the government is naturally adversarial. This clean resource, said Martin, has the potential to generate $1 trillion over the next thirty years, and 100,000 jobs. Natural gas already sustains several hundred well-paying jobs in Chilliwack, and by developing the export industry, there are “liter-

ally thousands more on the horizon,” said Martin. Throness added that as MLA, he would also promote agriculture, and advocate for “clean, light industry.” For the NDP, the major driver for economic growth in the region is skills training. Since September 2011, the province lost 34,000 private sector jobs, according to ChilliwackHope candidate Gwen O’Mahony. Within seven

years, nearly 80 per cent of jobs will require a post-secondary education. The NDP promises to introduce needs-based grants, and expand the B.C. Training Tax Credit program for small- and medium-sized businesses that hire co-op students. Chilliwack, skills training is important, as is continued support of the resource sector, including forestry, agriculture, LNG, and mining. Increasing Chilliwack’s capacity to undertake value-added processing, and enhancing aboriginal participation in the economy, will also spurn economic growth. Finally, Chilliwack has a competitive advantage in agriculture by having an already-robust industry, easy access to the highway, and an appropriate climate. MacAhonic said that developing local agriculture is a key market. Conser vative candidate for ChilliwackHope, Michael Henshall, also sees agricultural development as key for Chilliwack. He said that the Conservatives would provide a tax credit for purchasing locally grown, raised, caught and processed agri-food products at retailers, restaurants and farmers markets throughout B.C. The NDP candidates promised to re-instill needs-based grants, while the Conservatives said they will introduce interest-free loans to students who remain in the province for five years after graduation. On the balance of funding between public and private schools, all candidates agreed that students deserve an equal, governmentfunded education. Throness added that, while true, this doesn’t preclude parents from topping up education spending. “There’s a basic education that should be funded and universal, just like our healthcare system. That does not suggest, though, that more could not be purchased. If you want your child to have a math tutor over the summer, I don’t feel there’s a problem with that,” he said. Another audience member requested that candidates consider why the province has Canada’s worst child poverty rate. MacAhonic said that this directly correlated with B.C. having the lowest corporate tax rate in the G7. The NDP is proposing to raise corporate tax rates by two per cent; the Liberals will raise them by one per cent. Liberal candidate for Chilliwack, John Martin, said that high child poverty in the province was due to B.C.’s higher living costs, and that provinceto-province comparisons are inappropriate. Throness said that the Liberal’s job creation plan will decrease child poverty, while Michael

Their pay will come out of our pockets, and their decisions will have a very real impact on the course of our lives for the next four years. Like any employer, we have the right to ask questions of potential employees, and make note of straightforward answers, as well as evasions and attempts to obscure the truth. And, as with any employment decision, a number of factors must be weighed. Does the candidate seem experienced enough for the job? Do his or her goals seem realistic enough? Can we afford to hire an individual on the basis of who that person knows, or what views he or she espouses around the water cooler, or should we choose our employees more on the basis of how he or she has performed in the past? Our participation in the election, particularly when ballots are cast, is vital to the process. This is more than a matter of the usual lecture about civic responsibility, low voter turnout and the importance of stepping up and being counted. As employers, if we feel our previous hires have not been equal to the job, we must – if only out of self-interest – choose replacements that seem best to suit our needs. But if, by the same token, we feel our wishes and aspirations have been properly represented over the past four years, we must, in all fairness, give a vote of confidence to our current employees. According to WorkBC, three-quarters of our economic activity comes from the service sector where nearly four-fifths of the workforce is employed. health care, services, high tech and retail are expected to drive the economy. But it’s the resource projects that could be the game-changers. In that in-basket are mining projects, pipeline projects, BC Hydro’s Site C dam, LNG proposals, transportation expansions, Margaret and tax subsidies for the film indusEVANS try. The resource industries come to the table with huge challenges, none the least of which are the logistical and environmental pushbacks from the burgeoning eco crowd. British Columbia does seem to come by its reputation as Canada’s BANANA republic (build absolutely nothing anywhere near

anything) honourably. To build, dig, extract, flood, or ship - or not to – has been the entrenched argument, isolating people on bitterly opposing sides. The alternative, of course, is sustainable development, ecoefficiency, and corporate social responsibility to drive investment, innovation, creativity, productivity and competitiveness, building on B.C.’s talented workforce toward eco-industrial excellence. The problem right now is that resource industries have a terrible reputation from past track records and anyone could be forgiven for having a knee-jerk reaction and saying no to any industrial venture. But saying no all the time isn’t an option if B.C. is going to be open for business, grow its economy, expand its workforce, and secure prosperity for families. Environmental stewardship will be

key if B.C.’s GDP is to increase by over 25 per cent by 2017, as predicted by WorkBC. Those who crunch the numbers expect employment to grow by an average 1.8 per cent per year through to 2019 creating some 450,000 new jobs. Then there are those who will retire, opening up thousands more jobs in the coming years. The growth in job openings is expected to outpace graduation rates which will mean that B.C. must continue to enhance its position as a go-to place for immigrants with the right skills. Governments don’t create jobs. They create the business environment to make jobs happen. Which is where leadership comes in. The next premier must lead by earning the trust and respect of the people through honesty, accountability and transparency. He or she must be a great com-

municator yet still have the ability to keep in touch and be approachable with the folks next door. They must have a cool head, be able to make decisions under pressure, and have the determination to make things happen. They must follow through. Election promises are pretty hollow when, once in the driver’s seat, they forget those town hall pledges. And they must have a sense of humour, an ability to laugh at themselves and see the absurdities in moments of relief. But more than anything, whoever is elected next Tuesday must have a vision for the future of this province that is understood by everyone. They must have a plan that connects the office worker with the fisherman, the logger, the nurse and the construction worker. They must have the conviction to drive this province to prosperity. Failure is not an option.

Off-leash etiquette a matter of respect, not entitlement There are far too many people with dogs that take this for granted, and extort their self-entitlement to this area outside the offleash park; allowing their dogs to race ahead of them and piling left-overs all around the trail. This is absolutely disrespectful to other users of the park, the regional and municipal members who have provided this area for everyone’s enjoyment, not to mention, nature herself. On my regular hour-long walks along the trail, I come across a respectful few who actually do leash their animals in the park. And for that, to them, I am thankful. However, it’s the rest who feel that society should kowtow to them because they are who they are and they are allowed to let their dogs do what they want. Please understand, I myself, am a dog lover. Over the years I have come to appreciate the companionship of my fellow canines in life. Having said that, I also respected my fellow human companions by keeping my dogs close to me and under my guidance when in public. Going further, dogs that are allowed to run through the park off-leash, are in actuality, doing damage to the environment. As I have witnessed many times in just the last week, dogs will race to the shoreline, jump down to the rivers edge to drink the cool waters. As they race back to the path to meet their owners, they have to claw their way up the five-foot embankment, causing copious amounts of material to fall into the river. There is a bright red sign and three bright orange cones that state “Failing Bank.” I’m sure the safety committee who erected the sign did

Dogs, by nature, are predatory and opportunistic hunters. We believe, in our delusion through our domestication of them, that they are harmless creatures that “wouldn’t hurt anybody.” To believe this, is to believe in your own undoing. This is an open letter for all members of our great community in Chilliwack. We owe a lot to various groups, people and individuals for the many wonderful and exciting things to do in this city of ours. None more so than Island 22. This gorgeous wild area meandering along the banks of the Fraser River gives us a stunning opportunity to enjoy the best that nature has to offer – for everyone. It’s with great pride that the members of the Fraser Valley Regional District and the members of the City of Chilliwack, have allowed us this opportunity to interact so intimately with nature in its many recreational offerings., such as the equestrian area, the boat launch and the magnificent dike that people can stroll or bike alongside the river throughout the year. The regional district has even gone so far as to create a separated area for people with dogs, allowing them to roam as freely as we do, off leash. And this brings me to my frustration. The regional parks commission has created a fenced-off area for people with dogs to run free off-leash. However, there are clearly marked signs posted all throughout the area, that dogs are to remain leashed up, when not accessing the off-leash area. There are also many signs posted around that state dog owners must clean up after their dogs when “nature calls”, so that other people who use the park aren’t accosted by free roaming dogs and side-stepping steaming piles of feces.

Fire at Mt. Slesse school sends students home for the afternoon

Mt. Slesse middle school was evacuated Monday morning after a fire broke out in a storage room on the second floor. Staff and students got out safely after the fire alarm was activated, and no injuries were reported, said Chilliwack Fire Department’s assistant fire chief

Jeff Ullyot. Damage was limited to contents of a shelving unit in the storage room, next to a science lab. But there were no flammable chemical materials ignited, he said, just “class A” or ordinary combustibles.

“It certainly appears accidental,” Ullyot added. Firefighters quickly doused the fire and extinguished any hot spots to contain the damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

Chilliwack students set course for Destination Imagination Alina Konevski The Progress

An instant challenge to build a bridge out of straws, aluminum foil, and a plastic container in order to join two chairs in the school principal’s office excited a flurry of activity, serious deliberations, and single-minded teamwork. The “Crazy Cheeseheads” team of Grade 3 and 4 boys from East Chilliwack Elementary School are heading to Tennessee, U.S., in May to compete in the global finals of Destination Imagination’s Challenge program, a competitive educational program in which student teams solve assigned tasks. During a practice challenge at school on Tuesday, Landon Johnston, Josiah Hansen, Miles Rose, Hayden Dahlby, and Riley

Zacharias had one minute to plan the bridge, and four minutes to execute — all carefully timed by Landon’s mom and team coach, Nicole Johnston. “I think we can use these to connect to stuff and put stuff over it,” said Hayden, pointing to the plastic straws. “Then we can make an arch,” added Miles. Hayden said that would get them extra creativity points. Although the resultant formation of straws taped between chairs might not look like much, the nine- and ten-year-old boys were tremendously proud of their creation, and elated through the process. “It takes them out of classroom learning and into real, creative group work,” explained Miles’ mom Anne Russell of the program. A 2011 University of Virginia study found

that DI students scored higher in creative thinking, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving than their non-DI counterparts. The global finals draw over 1,100 teams from 13 countries, and 15,000 attendees. That’s out of 125,000 program participants globally. In Tennessee, the Crazy Cheeseheads will have to solve two challenges. The first will have participants creating and acting out a story about how they would adapt in a hypothetical world reality, such as “there is no gravity.” The second is usually a more physical challenge, such as using clay to create a 3-D map. While it may seem confusing to adults, the kids understand the challenges perfectly, and revel in the absolute creativity of solving a task outside of rules and boundaries. The program teaches

teamwork, and creativity, and problem-solving. “It’s such a great creative outlet for them,” said Nicole. “The whole movement in schools right now is moving towards collaborative thinking. Putting people in groups, and working together.” Destination Imagination’s global success isn’t surprising to the five boys from East Chilliwack. “You get to expand your mind, be silly with it, be creative,” said Josiah. For Riley, the draw is the improvisation. “I love acting,” he said. “I’ve been in plenty of plays. That’s pretty much why I love D.I.” You win at globals “by using lots of enthusiasm and not fighting,” explained Riley, who is the only boy unable to attend globals because of a simultaneous family vacation. “It’s improv, you

can’t fight. Sometimes you don’t know what people are thinking, you have to play along.” For Landon, a bonus was overcoming his fear of being in front of an audience. The team is fundraising for the trip, with a goal to raise about $7,000 before the global competition on May 22–25 in Knoxville, TN. They’ll be selling raffle tickets at Cottonwood Mall on May 17, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Sutton kiosk. The day after, they’ll hold a car wash and hot dog BBQ at Sutton Group (9240 Young Road), where coach Nicole works. And team sponsors will receive their logo in a “Thank You” ad in The Progress in May. The Paton family of Chilliwack has been glued to the TV for weeks, watching the antics of Team Buttercup as they take on geocaching challenges. Saturday is the final episode of the exciting YTV reality show Cache Craze. Chilliwack teens Garrett Paton, 19, and Connor Paton, 16, are in fact Team Buttercup, says their mom, Holly Paton. They’re competing for the $10,000 prize on Cache Craze, described as a cross between The Amazing Race and Wipe Out. Paton said it’s been “a party every week” following the episodes, as the two teens take on challenges seeking out geocaches and taking on obstacle courses. “It started with eight teams. They were chosen to be on the show after auditions across Canada.” Garrett and Connor’s audition tape to the Cache Craze crew was a videotaped skit of why they thought they should win the competition. Connor wants to be an actor, she adds. Now, they’re closer than ever to actually winning the whole thing, after making it through weeks of competition and timed challenges. “It’s something all of Chilliwack can watch and get behind, as two of their own have done very well,” says Paton. Team Buttercup has been vying for the prize against teams like former Canuck Brad May and his daughter, Samantha. “Tonight (Monday) is a replay of Saturday’s episode. The boys have been representing us pretty good.” Saturday is the finale of the show when the winners will be announced.

In Abbotsford, the Shape Your World Society is helping run the event with the top six contestants in the Total Makeover Challenge 2013 manning the end point and signing up willing businesses and teams to participate. Businesses can help by signing up as ‘stop points’ on the hunt with teams visiting the

businesses and collecting a stamp. Individuals can help by signing up a team (maximum of five) and participating in the hunt, collecting points with mini challenges and donations. The objective for the teams in both communities is to rescue children from the ‘cages of poverty’ set up in Cottonwood Mall in Chilliwack and Sevenoaks Centre in Abbotsford. The team with the top points overall wins a week’s

HOME AND GARDEN 2013 How to repair unsightly bald spots in your lawn Lawn care aficionados know how a single bald spot can make an otherwise luscious lawn look worn down and poorly maintained. A bald spot can stick out like a sore thumb, while several bald spots can compromise a home’s curb appeal. Treating bald spots typically depends on what is causing the bald spot. Bugs, dryness, pet waste and damage from mowers are some of the more common causes of bald spots. The following is a breakdown of these different causes and how best to address each situation so you can restore your lawn to its natural beauty. Dryness: A lawn can go dry because of drought in the summertime or during the winter months when there is not much rain or snowfall. Homeowners cannot change the weather, but they can help their lawn avoid becoming the burned or yellowed turf that often results after extended periods of dryness. Fertilizing the lawn

during the spring and summer is a good first step. This helps the lawn grow in healthy and thick. Once you have fertilized, don’t cut the grass too short. When grass is cut too short, the soil struggles to retain moisture, which can eventually lead to bald spots if weather conditions are dry. During especially dry periods in the summer, watering might be necessary. You won’t have to water frequently, but be sure to water deeply so the water can reach the roots of the grass. Pet Waste: Waste from pets can cause bald spots on a yard. This might surprise some homeowners, but pet waste contains a high level of concentrated nitrogen that, when applied to a lawn, can burn the grass and cause bald spots. Urine is most likely to cause bald spots, but fecal matter can as well. When addressing the problem of pet waste on your lawn, make sure no one else’s pets are the cause of the problem.

The art of building garden paths and walls

Although landscape gardening requires a lot of planning, it is well worth the effort. This is especially true for well-integrated garden paths and walls. A narrow, straight path can lengthen a small yard, whereas a diagonal path can give depth to a narrow area. A winding path creates dimension, as it hides surprises around each bend. Even if your paths are only intended for casual wandering, they still need to be well constructed. A good foundation is essential, especially if you don’t want to have to start the work all over again in a few years. The same principles apply to garden walls. It is important that they be functional, decorative,

and able to facilitate the upkeep of the yard. For example, spacing between walls has to be wide enough for a lawn mower to pass without difficulty. Accidents can happen easily, so safety should always be taken into consideration when planning this type of work. Think about the lines of your structures; you will want them to match with the architecture of your home and the natural environment of your yard. This kind of harmony is essential in creating a look that fits with the setting. Soft, curving lines suit wildflower gardens and hilly terrain, while symmetric, straight lines go well with Asian-style gardens or modern home design.

Hard work paying off for swimming star For the third year in a row, the Chilliwack Progress and Sardis secondary school’s Grade 10 honours English class have partnered up for the ‘Let’s Get Published’ project. Guided by teacher Brad Geary, students write sports-related articles, with the best ones getting published in the Progress sports section.

Colton Peterson has been swimming with the Chilliwack Spartans swim club for the past four years. In this short time, he has grown from a novice competitive swim-

mer to an athlete to be reckoned with. Peterson is now only one second away from the senior national qualifying time in his 100 metre breaststroke, which would allow him to attend and compete at world and Olympic trials. Peterson’s best stroke, the breaststroke, is very dependent on upper body strength and knee flexibility. The breaststroke is easy to learn, but very hard to do fast. Peterson is fast. He is an all-rounder when it comes to swimming. He competes in events of all strokes, and even qualifies for national level swim meets in his worst stroke. But it is obvious that his greatest strength is his breaststroke. He is ranked in the top 50 among 16-yearold swimmers for most of his events, and top 20 in his strongest. This season Peterson has improved his times and

achieved elite status through hard work. He comes to practice seven times a week, waking up at 4 a.m. most weekdays. Peterson laughs when asked about how he fits a social life between school and swimming. He says that he is either swimming, or too tired from swimming, to go out most nights. Peterson is in Grade 11 and is looking forward to a lot more swimming before his career is through. He trains more than 12 hours a week and is considering a jump to 16 hours, plus weightlifting done on his own time. When asked about what he does with his time in the pool he says the main focus is muscular endurance training, all while making sure that each stroke is strong and has good technique. Swimming is very technical and each aspect requires many hours of training. Peterson has a wide

array of equipment to assist in his technique training. A pull buoy is a snorkel that faces forward to allow him to not have to breath to the side. He will swim with a band that holds his legs together, and he often has his coach video tape him so he can correct miniscule problems. Peterson even gets filmed with an underwater camera. He often sports a removable Chilliwack Spartan tattoo on his chest, much like exSpartan and Olympic swimmer Brent Hayden had a similar tattoo. Hayden won Olympic bronze at the London Summer Olympics. Peterson admits he would like to get a real tattoo of the Spartan symbol, as a testament to his dedication and the fun he’s had with the Spartans. If Peterson continues his hard work and dedication, he stands a good chance of competing at Hayden’s level on the international stage.

Lions helping Grizzlies Two BC Lions players will be helping out at the GW Graham football skills camp that takes place May 11. Defensive linemen Keron Williams and Jabar Westerman are making the trip, lending their wisdom to nearly 200 boys and girls between the ages of 6-12. The Canadian Football League players join an impressive list of guest coaches that includes their Lions teammate Marco Iannuzzi along with Tyson St. James (Chilliwack’s Valley Huskers), Dave Johnson (Simon Fraser), Shawn Olsen (UBC), Dino Geremia (Football BC), Jay Prepchuk (Football BC), Jerry Mulliss (National Student Athlete Advisory Council) and Kurt Cramme (Lynden Lions). Chilliwack Minor Football will also be represented. The camp will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants get a free t-shirt and water bottle, and there is a free barbecue afterwards. Lions speaking at football banquet BC Lion Keron Williams is sticking around May 11 for an evening speaking engagement. The CFL star is one of two special guests at the Happiest People on Earth’s football banquet. The annual event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Canton Garden Restaurant, and also features Lions offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine.

BRULE Sharon

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Sharon passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 1 in Chilliwack at the age of 65. Sharon is survived by her husband Remie (Ray) of 45 years, her two daughters Camille (Peter), Nicole (Steve), her seven grandchildren Adriana (Spencer), Christy (Patric), Nathaniel (Krystal), Zachary, Owen (Montana), Amanda, and Rhianna, and her two great grandchildren Madison and Joshua, and her brother Jerry (Andrea). She was predeceased by her mother Johanna Halliday and her in-laws Jerry and Jill Brule. Sharon was a long time resident of Agassiz were she was a Girl Guide leader and a Lady of the Royal Purple. Sharon lived her family dearly and spent lots off time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr Macintosh, her doctor of 30 years for everything he did to make her last days comfortable. W would like to thank NU5 at Chilliwack hospital and Cascade Hospice for making mom’s last two days very peaceful. A funeral service will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Agassiz on Friday May 10 at 11a.m. Prayers the night before, Thursday May 9 at 7 p.m. Donations to Children’s Hospital oncology ward in lieu of flowers.

Vivian was born in Mission, BC on August 16, 1919 and passed away peacefully in COLWELL HARRIS her sleep on April 25, 2013. We regret to announce the sudden death of Bryan Gilfred Larson, born March 15, 1966 and passed LARSON away April 29, 2013 in Vancouver, BC. He will be dearly missed by mother, Adrienne (Garth) Campbell; father, Orville Larson, older brother Leonard (Wendy) Larson and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by infant brother, Lesley Phillip; cousin Don Price and Oma (Beulah Reid). His passions were snow skiing, basketball and hiking. He had a great love for nature and working with young people. He loved the ocean, swimming and waterskiing.

As a preteen, he enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Chilliwack Sea Cadet Corp. He had an easy, contagious laugh and sense of humour. Bryan left a positive impression on everyone. Mom was a wonderful Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt, Great Aunt, Sister in law, cousin and friend to many. She worked as a nurses aide for many years starting in her younger days at the TB hospital in Vancouver, also at Glenwood Hospital in Agassiz and Extended Care at Chilliwack Hospital. When Mom retired she volunteered at the hospital with the service league for many years. Mom first priority was always her family she was the most loving and caring mother and grandma. She loved to bake, cook family dinners, garden, casinos, prior to our Dad passing away they loved to camp and fish and also she loved to Cruise with her travelling partner Ethel. Mom moved back to Agassiz a year ago to the beautiful Cheam Village, Mom loved living there with her friends and loved all the amazing Staff. MURRAY MORRIS MORRISON NICKERSON Alvin (Nick) Walter David William (Bill) Audrey Nick Nickerson passed Major (Retired), O.M.M., C.D. December 26, 1934 Delores away on May 2, 2013 at Cas8th Canadian Hussars May 1, 2013 (Princess Louise’s) Walter was born on Christmas forenoon 1932 to Murdo Ewan Murray and Edythe E u p h e m i a MURRAY Murray (nee MacDonald) on the family farm, Township of Whitton, Province of Quebec. He was the fifth in a family of three boys and three girls. He traced his Scottish ancestry through Hebridian forebears from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. He died the morning of May 3, 2013 in grace and bravery. Walter is survived by his dear wife Nancy, by his son Pierre and wife Rolanda and grandson Aidan of whom he was immensely proud. His brother George and wife Phyllis, his sisters Mavis Curtis, Hazel Brunt and Alene Welch along with nieces and nephews greatly mourn his passing as do his in-laws Mary and Meehan Bonnar. Walter was predeceased by his first wife, Major Claudette Lamontagne Murray, C.D., R.N., his parents and his older brother Lennox. Walter was an Officer of the Order of Military Merit and holder of the Canadian Forces Decoration with two clasps. During his thirty-one years in the Canadian Forces he saw service in the Congo, Egypt and Cyprus on United Nations peacekeeping duties as well as in Canada and the United States. Walter was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, a Life Member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows and a Past District Chief, Sons of Scotland Benevolent Association. The Family wishes to thank Dr. Chin-yee and the Staff members of the London Regional Cancer Program and Dr. Haffner and the Staff members of the ICU, Stratford General Hospital for their exemplary care and support. It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our beloved William (Bill) on May 1, 2013 MORRIS at the age of 78 in the Chilliwack General Hospital. He was a loving husband of 2 children and 2 grandchildren. He farmed near MacGregor razing cattle and mixed grain, and was a municipal councilor for many years. Bill retired and moved to Chilliwack, B.C. 17 years ago from Manitoba to be with this soul mate and partner. He enjoyed cribbage, dancing, gardening, and playing bingo. Bill also enjoyed driving his lawn mower, maintaining his yard, relaxing with his old cat “Toby”, and going for drives in his truck. In September of 2011, he was diagnosed with kidney disease and congested heart failure, although he fought a courageous battle, he is now at peace. Special thanks to all the Drs and nurses at the Renal Clinic in Abbotsford, and the Abbotsford and Chilliwack Hospital staff. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Bill’s residence on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 2:00pm, all who knew are him welcome. She is survived by her husband Kenneth John of 55 years; sons Fabian Bernard (Agassiz, BC), Lawrence William (Chilliwack, BC), daughter Audrey Marie (Kingston, Ont.); grandchildren Matthew, Brenden and Sean; sisters Rita (Sydney, NS), Jean (Moncton, NB), Marie (Meaford, Ont.), Helen (Truro, NS) and other family members and friends. Audrey was predeceased by7 her son Kenneth John Jr.; parents Dan and Sadie Campbell; and brothers John and Bernard. No funeral service by Audrey’s request. Her cremated remains will be interred at the Royal Canadian Legion Cemetery under the direction of Branch #4.
