New Silver Spray plans emerge Pirjo Raits

Plans are being developed for 95 private residence club cottages at Silver Spray as well as ancillary buildings such as a pavillion and a club. Michael Thornton came before District of Sooke council on Monday, April 22 with an impassioned plea to allow for blanket variances of setbacks at Silver Spray. Thornton is looking to build 95 private residence club cottages on the 7.02 hectare property at Possession Point. Thornton was requesting a reduction of the site specific floodplain, steep slope and building setbacks from 15 metres to five metres. The development, now called Silver Spray Destination Resort - Phase 1, would also include a club, pavilion for commercial and recreational use and a wastewater treatment plant. The developer was looking for the exemptions so building could begin on the first phase as early as this summer. “The only way this project has a chance is if we can move it along quickly,” said Thornton. Silver Spray has had a number of development plans over the past 17 years, with little build out on the vast property. “For 17 years, I’ve been trying to make it work and I always believed the money would come,” said Thorn-

ton. He added that if construction could begin this summer, in spite of the economy, it could bring $24-25 million to the local economy. “I can’t afford to lose this summer…uncertainty is the worst,” he said. Council was unanimous in granting Silver Spray the Site Specific Floodplain Exemption from Bylaw 561 and other requested setbacks as well as issuing a Development Permit for the 95 cottages and other ancillary buildings. Council also recommended that unnecessary referral requirements be waived. One concerned member of the public had sent in a letter to council where he/ she stated there was some evidence of a high frequency of vertical cracks in the rocks at Possession Point and suggested an evaluation of the geology of the area in regard to rock fracturing and stability. The Silver Spray lands were annexed into the District of Sooke in 2005, although they are on the western end of East Sooke, which is in the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area. The annexation was approved because the foreshores touch. Original proposals divided the residents of East Sooke, leading to defamation and libel lawsuits.

East Sooke residents came out in favour of a new firehall in a 339 to 138 vote. Seventy-one per cent of the residents took the time to let the East Sooke Fire Protection & Emergency Response Commission know they agreed. Right, Dick Braunschweig, chair of the ESF PERC stands with Fire Chief Roger Beck of the East Sooke Volunteer Fire Department. The cost for the firehall will be approximately $50 per $100,000 of assessed value for residents of East Sooke. The fire department responds to call from Mt. Matheson to Silver Spray. The new $2.12-million firehall will be built on Ragland Place and the old hall will become a centre for community activities.

tribution. I totally support reducing it,” she said. Coun. Maja Tait wanted to see the financial impact and said she would not support the proposed changes, and Coun. Kerrie Reay was opposed as well. Amenity contributions generally go towards affordable housing, parks, trails and community gardens.

Police Beat Sooke’s Lions Club will be bringing the RCMP Musical Ride to the greater Victoria region on August 17 and 18. All proceeds will be going to Vancouver Island children’s benefits, including the Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan and Vancouver Island riding for the disabled. The Musical Ride consists of a full troop of 32 uniformed riders who, while on their horses, perform intricate figures and cavalry drills, choreographed to music. The ride travels to each province on a rotational basis every four years. This year, the B.C. ride will be held in Central Saanich. Tickets can be obtained from the RCMP detachment at 2076 Church Road. Tickets: $10 for adults and $2 for children, and they cover admission for both days.

What’s happening at John Muir! On April 25th we had a talent show; there were singers, skateboarders, dancers, musicians, and scooter performances! Every Friday we have a discovery afternoon. There is sewing, beach exploring, jewelry making, cooking, computer graphics, and pottery! It is lots of FUN! The Grade 5’s are going to Camp Thunder bird in June. We get to do archery, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and rock-climbing! At recess and lunch we all play tag, soccer, basketball, football and tether ball. We have a new playhouse for the primary kids. The Grade 5’s started a newspaper club. We write about sports and everything important that goes on in our school. We have a cross country team and we meet for runs once in a while. Teachers are very nice and fun. The principal and vice principal are nice as well. So is the secretary. We always have lots of fun here at John Muir Elementary! It’s that time of year again, where the culinary students from Edward Milne community school hosts their annual fundraising dinner. This year’s event, billed as a three-course culinary extravaganza, will be hosted at the Sooke Harbour House on Thursday, May 9 starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 for a three course dinner prepared and served by the culinary students of EMCS. The funds raised will go to expanding the breadth of experience to which the EMCS culinary students are exposed. “The fundraiser is for our culinary arts

program,” says Marion French, the current chef at the Culinary Arts Program at EMCS. “We use the funds for field trips and it goes back into the program.” In the past, students have gone to Salt Spring Island and the Cowichan Valley, and have also visited institutions such as the Vancouver Island University (VIU) which has campuses throughout the Island. This year, they hope to go to Salt Spring Island and take the students to a range of farms on the island, including some farms where cheese is produced. In addition to funding field trips, some of the funds will also go towards the school’s

Farmhouse Recipes May 5 is the traditional Easter date for the Orthodox Christian Church. Their foods at this most special time is representative of their deep faith. Baked Stuffed Salmon 5 lbs. salmon 1 med. onion 1 1/2 cup toasted bread crumbs 2 beaten eggs oil chopped parsley bay leaf salt and pepper

Scale the fish and skin it, careful not to tear it. Wrap the skin in wax paper and put in the fridge. Cut the fish into medium size pieces, cover with water and add salt and pepper, bay leaf, chopped onion, a sprig of parsley and boil for 25 minutes. Lift meat from fish stock and remove all the bones. Put meat through the meat grinder. Add bread crumbs, oil and eggs, parsley and chopped onion and season to taste. Mix well. Stuff the skin with the mixture, shaping it into a fish. Sew it up. Place fish in a pan and add a little fish stock, bake for 3/4 hour at 300 ‘ F. Remove from pan and cool. Serve with lemon.

For some local food, make a chive pesto with 2 cups of your fresh chives 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup packed chopped parsley 2 tbsps. of either almonds, walnuts or pine nuts 1 garlic clove 2 tsp. lemon juice salt and pepper. Blend and pour over your freshly scrubbed, fingerling potatoes, halved lengthwise and bake for 45 minutes at 425’ F. You may want to make more than required in this recipe as they are delicious. Get credit for scuba diving A Canadian Marine and Environmental Science Program with SCUBA for senior high school students is currently registering applicants for sessions offered this summer. Offered by School District No. 64, Gulf Islands, the program is based at the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific near Victoria British Columbia. During the three-week adventure, participants earn an internationally recognized PADI SCUBA certification and full secondary school credit for Marine and Environmental Science. The Canadian offering is unique among environmental courses since it takes place in the waters and amongst the old growth fir trees of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island. Ian Mitchell, Summer Programs Coordinator comments, “We offer a truly spectacular, world-class program right here in our own backyard with some of the most fascinating underwater seascapes and terrestrial ecosystems to be found anywhere in the world.” A maximum of 16 students take part in the program to learn about ecosystems and underwater inhabitants in and around nearby Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. Located within the Juan de Fuca Straight, the reserve possesses high levels of plankton and nutrients, resulting in increased populations of invertebrates, fish, harbour seals, sea lions, elephant seals and orcas. Several open water dives provide students with the opportunity to investigate the habitats, niches and other

elements of the various ecosystems in the area. Students coming to the program who are already SCUBA certified, earn advanced diving certifications, learn about underwater video and produce their own underwater movies. Other field excursions include marine biology research facilities, Botanical Beach with its bountiful tide pools and a visit to Victoria. Guest speak-

ers and a career seminar give students a flavour for the tremendous variety of occupations which involve the aquatic environment. In addition to the Marine Science/SCUBA Program, a Studio Arts Program will also be offered this summer. The arts program will attract students seeking to an opportunity to increase and fine tune their skills in both 3-D and 2-D projects in the spectacular Pear-

The Pastor's Pen To Be A Christian

Over recent years, the word "Christian" has garnered some negative connotations in our society. The word represents, in the minds of some people, self-righteous bigotry and unyielding fundamentalism. In our supposedly postChristian and post-modern world, there is a push to get rid of undesirable labels, and unfortunately, "Christian" is one of them. Instead of being known for loving one another as in ancient Antioch, Christians are lampooned as being ignorant, uneducated, unsophisticated, prejudicial, and judgmental. While there may be some elements across all Christian denominations that reflect these negative flaws, they do not really represent who we are in most regions of the world. The word "Christian" means a person who is a follower of Christ, who tries to live by His tenets and is not afraid to speak the truth, even when it might be considered unpopular. It would be so easy to ditch the word and just call ourselves "spiritual seekers who like Jesus". We could then do what we wanted and not be burdened by the word "Christian" at all. But the truth of the matter is this: to be a Christian means to follow Christ closely, knowing that we will frequently fail. His teachings and truths will challenge us constantly, in the hope that we can let Him change us positively to become more like Him each day. As C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, "Every Christian is to become a little Christ. The whole purpose of becoming a Christian is simply nothing else." Pastor Gordon Kouwenberg

Hot dogs and cigarettes were “in” Recent newspaper headlines discussing the banning of smoking in public parks brings to mind a different era – when those of us who didn’t smoke were in the minority. The first thing you notice with this 1946 photo is the promotion of cigarette smoking; smoking was the “IN” thing to do. In that era, the social phenomenon of cigarette smoking was almost universally accepted and signs such as these, for Sweet Caporal and Black Cat, were everywhere. How times change, and sometimes it is hard to remember just how much society’s attitudes have changed. It is quite a shock to remember that when this photo was taken 67 years ago, people had not yet come to understand the hazards of smoking. This hot dog stand,

Sooke is a corporation As stated in a previous editorial, the issue of the Fee for Service grant denied to the Sooke Region Tourism Association is not over. Mayor Wendal Milne, although he is recovering from surgery, said the issue is coming back to council for another look. He said he doesn’t want Sooke to lose the opportunity to promote the town although he is disappointed at the reluctance of SRTA to provide what was required for the grant. He wants to do what is best for the whole community. So the ball is now in SRTA’s court and the one thing The have to realize is that shareholders they the district is the referee in this game. The shareholders are the taxpayers and the staff are the employees, while council is the governing board. Corporations have an aim to make a profit to the shareholders, the District of Sooke has an aim to balance the budget and maybe have some money left over that could be called profit. It’s a money game and the rules are simple... accountability in all aspects.

Land use committee gone rogue? Open Letter to Mayor and Council: Land use committee, consisting of two developers, one council developer, one wife of builder. I know that councilors try to remain neutral but when push comes to shove how neutral are they? A developer, who may have pecuniary interest in development property, makes a motion to reduce amenity costs to developers. No one called a point of order but instead went ahead and voted to lower costs to developers with three developers voting. This went to council and was again supported. Staff recommended that a financial review be carried out before putting this forward, but the majority of council ignored the professionals and with their jaded views voted against the recommendation of staff. I will note here that the land use committee does not contact staff for clarification or query in any way the information given them or give advice, rather they grandstand at meetings and waste valuable staff time and everyone’s time.

Why do we have the professional staff and pay them so well and then ignore their recommendations or choose not to confer with them? They either have the answers or access to them. I supported and asked that there be a land use committee to speed up process, by hearing from the community and dealing with concerns before projects came to council. Instead the land use committee has become an arena for committee members to harass and belittle staff. Somehow, when elected, the members are now the professionals with all the knowledge and the developers know exactly what should be done, they even write the bylaws which are passed by council. Something wrong here? You bet. Council approved their strategic plan to be fiscally responsible and to build a vibrant downtown and with one full swoop, in the vote for amenities, they voted to perhaps increase taxes so developers pay less and voted to decrease costs outside the downtown from $5,000 to $2,000. Guess where the building will be if any? Langford is down by 50 per

cent in building permits. It stands to reason that the economy for building in Sooke will be even worse. We have witnessed the downturn here in the late 80’s when many truck drivers, sold their trucks, excavators etc. and some even moved out of the country. The building industry is like that and the economy is down and that is a reality. We all do with less if working for ourselves, retail or developers. It happened in the 20’ and the 30’s. The banksters continue to make money as they lend out money and receive interest and we do without but must pay the banks. Developers will need to find the market niches and survive or fall. Council is not here to subsidize the businesses, with taxpayer money. Council appears to be tough on groups looking to subsidize their incomes and developers are businesses, so keep on being tough and build our community slowly and with respect for the people and the land. Choose a new site

A new site needs to be chosen for the bike park. The site being considered is not appropriate for the following reasons: Many birds are affected by recreation. Any activities that destroy current and future nest trees and nesting habitat will adversely affect their population. Silt from the bike jumps will flow into the pond and kill off many of the tiny creatures that call this precious ecosystem their home. Many deer roam through the park as well, the extra noise and activity will disrupt their habitat and this displacement will eventually will lead to abandonment. And finally the natural landscape will be ruined. Once this beautiful park has been disrupted it will never be the same again. Sooke council needs to seriously revisit this bike park idea again, and select a different site. Many families enjoy using this wonderful park just as it is. Mark Fairall Sooke

I am in favour of this. Whoever comes to power does need to address the despicable un-Canadian treatment of workers by ridiculous mind-numbing oil company Fascists. Supposedly, these are safety policies and programs to protect workers and companies but they go against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and common sense. To go to work, you need a myriad of tickets, no problem. Then you need to pass a pee test that doesn’t discriminate between legal and illegal drugs. Don’t get caught in a camp with alcohol or drugs because that’s a one-way ticket out. What Canadian doesn’t appreciate and deserve a few cool ones after a hard days work? They have ex-RCMP officers acting as company cops to enforce no smoking and drinking laws in camp, kind of like hall monitors. You have no say if they want to bring a drug sniffing dog into your room or private truck. You can’t smoke in your own truck; you must proceed to the (–30 degree) smoking tent.

Outburst uncalled for I write concerning the vitriolic out burst of bad manners exhibited by Madame Phillip during debate on a District of Sooke council motion to not enter into a service agreement with the Sooke Region Tourism Association (SRTA) on April 22, 2013. It is not my intention to get into the issue, either pro or con but to simply point out that rarely, if ever, do we witness such a display of rude obnoxious and vitriolic behaviour from someone, who self claims to be a pillar of the community, in a public forum. Did she forget that not only is she the coowner of a well-known business but she is also a member of SRTA and Chair of the Sooke Chamber of Commerce and in respect to the last two entities, she

did incalculable harm to their objectives and image as well as to her own business She should mitigate that by resigning as Chair of the Chamber. Provincial records indicate Councillor Tait is listed as a Director of SRTA so it is puzzling as to why she was in chambers and engaging in debate. This group included a certain Sooke doctor who ran the race in a spectacular 34 min 56 sec. That was just over three minutes behind Simon Whitfield the Olympic athlete. Unreal! I would also like to

mention in particular the several members of the Sooke Volunteer Fire Dept. who ran the race in full firefighting gear including air tanks. It must have been heavy and hot but they made it through. Those are the kinda guys I would want carrying my butt out of the fire. A credit to their dept and community. Well done all, see you there

Public money to private business All the residents of Sooke should be made aware that the mayor and council entered into an agreement with a private business known as Jocks’ Dock.

This agreement gives Jocks Dock 90 per cent of all launch fees from our public boat launch. Why should we be paying them that amount of money to collect fees that have been put into a locked metal box? I am sure it takes them less then 30 minutes a day to pick up the money. Several months ago, the owner of Jocks’ Dock was complaining to council that they had been losing money since the new launch

opened. Why should the people of Sooke be compensating Jocks’ Dock for any so-called loss of revenue due to the public boat ramp? In my opinion, giving them 90 per cent of the revenue is compensating them. Who is going to be responsible for all the expenses that will be incurred over time with the launch and dock? With Sooke only getting $1 per launch, it might as well be free launching, as I would

Dogs lose

Garnet Saunders, in his letter in the April 17, 2013 issue of the Sooke News Mirror, makes a valid point about the disturbing amount of dog feces in Whiffin Spit Park. The amount of poop on or near the main trail detracts from the beauty and enjoyment of this very spe-

cial place in our community. I frequently take my dog to Whiffin Spit Park. When she is offlease, I keep a close watch and pick up after her. The majority of dog walkers do the same. Unfortunately, there are less responsible (lazy?) dog owners who do not clean up after their pets. Their

behaviour is frustrating and annoying. It may eventually lead to the banning of all dogs in public parks in this community, as has already occurred on school properties in Sooke, or it may result in restriction of dog walking to a few designated areas. I believe that the onus is on responsible dog walkers to address the dog feces problem on Whiffin Spit and throughout Sooke. A two-pronged approach

is recommended: 1. When we see that a dog owner has not picked up after his or her pet, we need to politely but firmly request that he or she do so. We can explain that failure to pick up may well result in loss of access by dog walkers to parks and other public areas; and 2. Be prepared to pick up feces even when our dog is not the source. This action is not as disgusting as it might seem at first. Yes-

terday I picked up some Beagle poop on Whiffin Spit which the owner, a perhaps absent-minded person, had failed to notice because she was walking about 150 metres ahead of her two dogs. Dog ownership is a privilege and a responsibility – not a right. All dog walkers in Sooke need to take action to ensure that this privilege is not lost. Mark Ziegler Sooke

Local doctors are walking the walk, rather than just talking the talk. On Monday, May 6, six of the doctors and staff from the West Coast Family Medical Clinic will lace up their walking shoes and head to the kiosk at Evergreen Centre for the Walk with Your Doc event.

“It’s essentially to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle,” said spokesperson Barb Millward. “It will be approximately 30 minutes and it’s an easy walk, we’re not out to tax anyone.” The idea of a Walk with Your Doc is an initiative of the B.C. Medical Association to encourage 30 minutes of exercise a day,

which is all it takes to get healthier. Dr. Michael Rafael Moreno, launched the program in 2008. It started when he offered to walk with a patient to motivate her to exercise. Participants should meet at the kiosk at 12:15 p.m. for a 30-minute walk about Sooke. The first 40 participants will receive a free pedometer.

Six Sooke firefighters travelled to Panama to teach skills to Panamaian colleagues.

Firefighters return home from Panama The group that went to Panama is back in Sooke and still ecstatic about how the Training Mission went. They are all very grateful to have had the opportunity to share our skills and abilities with so many firefighters from Chiriqui Province in Panama. It was a tremendous experience, one that won’t soon be forgotten. The firefighters in Panama were no different than any firefighters I have ever met before. Their number one objective is to help their community and make a positive difference. Our first time meeting on April 1 was a bit nerve wracking, but we quickly realized that firefighters are all the same, no matter

where you are. We were able to joke around, have fun, but be serious and train hard for the week. The firefighters in Boquete, Panama face several similar challenges that we face in Sooke. The communities are comparable in size, they have areas with limited water supply, limited manpower, and a busy, dangerous road into town. We are very appreciative of the support we have received from our fellow firefighters here in Sooke, our families, and the community. In total, we spent over 700 volunteer hours planning, preparing, training, and delivering training for this project to succeed. We would very

much like to have new faces from Sooke Fire Rescue participate in this wonderful and fulfilling experience in 2015, which is when we intend to return to Panama and build on the projects successes. I have attached a photo of the six of us (Rod Davis, Darcy Abell, Paul Rudd, John Hester, Ben Temple, Cam Norris-Jones) and the majority of class participants posing with the Sooke News Mirror. What are you doing on Saturday May 4 this year? Why, going to the Sooke Rotary Auction and Spring Fair, of course! The 23rd annual Rotary Auction and Spring Fair will be held at SEAPARC from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and features a full day of fun, food and fabulous entertainment. The Spring Fair and Auction is the Sooke Rotary’s premier fundraising event. There will be over 75 tables with vendors on site, silent auction display tables, a stage for live entertainment, and a seating area for those who want to stay awhile and lend their ear to the performers. According to a letter from president Peter Faulkner, over the past 25 years the Sooke Rotary has contributed to “the Skateboard Park, the Rotary Pier, the Sooke Area Sign, the playground shelter at CASA, the gazebo and garden safety improvements at Ayre Manor and we financed the purchase of a Community Youth bus. We have also supported the Sooke Youth Council and provided many scholarships and bursaries to Sooke students over the years.” Faulkner zooms in on the Rotary Auction and Spring Fair, which “has grown into a full day of community activity, including an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to showcase their products and services. We see approximately

Besides contributing as a performer, Eric James will also be providing the sound system. James has been involved with the annual Rotary Auction for the past few years. James plays for his dinner, he laughingly says. The Moondogs, who play locally in Sooke and Victoria, consist of Mike Hartman on drums, Al Plainden on rhythm and guitar, Eric James on bass, and Al Johannesson on lead guitar. They perform popular rock music from the 50’s and 60’s, and always invite dancers to enjoy their rhythms. “We’re a dance band,” emphasizes James. Says Bridal of the event, “The first goal is for Rotary to give back to the community and to continue our focus on providing healthy and productive oppor-

There’s more! This year for the first time ever, the Rotary is also sponsoring a free swim from 1 to 5 p.m. at SEAPARC. You might notice how this nicely complements Bridal’s second goal above. In addition, there will be a massive silent auction, an evening dinner, and an outdoor plant sale. The Edward Milne community school will be hosting their culinary arts cafe. The evening dinner offers a reasonably priced meal, and tables and chairs will be set up to accommodate the diners. Bob Wright, Founder, President and CEO of Oak Bay Marine Group, passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria British Columbia in the early evening hours of April 17th with his beloved wife Yun at his side. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Bob followed his passion for the ocean and moved west with a dream. Some 50 years later, the â€œGumboot Fishermanâ€? leaves a legacy with operations in Canada, the U.S., and the Bahamas. Bob was a born leader whose passion and enthusiasm were infectious. Described as a visionary, a dreamer, and a creator, Bobâ€™s larger-than-life personality inspired all those who knew him. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Yun, children Randy, Robin and Ronald, his grandchildren, his OBMG family and all those who shared in his life. At Bobâ€™s request, there will be no funeral. Information on a celebration of life will be communicated when the details have been finalized.

The students will be holding their annual fundraiser at the Sooke Harbour House on May 23. All of the monies raised will go directly back to the Culinary Arts program. April 30, 2003 Council moves Harbour House parking lot bylaws forward, with restrictions in place In an attempt to try to solve the parking problem at the end of Whiffin Spit in mind, the Sooke council Monday moved forward with the idea of allowing a vacant residential lot to be turned into a parking lot. If adopted, the bylaws would rezone a property across from the Sooke Harbour House as village commercial parking and allow the construction of a parking lot. April 28, 1993 Kasper presses for WCB changes The trials of a Sooke man has led MalahatJuan de Fuca MLA Rick Kasper to push for changes in workers compensation policy. Kasper said the man, who does not wish to be identified, was forced to live in a tent for six months after being cut off from compensation back in 1991. He lost his income, home and family, while waiting two years before winning a recent appeal for WCB backpay plus interest. Kasper said he got a good show of support after a recent speech he made on the subject in the legislature.

They back up their claim, “In the last few months alone, she’s cemented that role with back-toback wins at the Clean Water Classic in Westport and the Rip Curl Stew in Tofino.” Once Oke has competed in the ISA World Surfing Games, she’ll be coming home to Port Renfrew. “I plan on sticking around Port Renfrew for the summer and working in order to surf and travel.”

Sooke’s Seahawks score a touchdown. The Seahawk Atom football played a nail-biter of a game on Sunday, April 28, against the ferocious Bulldogs of Cowichan Valley-Down. They scored two touchdowns by the end of the first quarter. The defence led by Gagnon in jersey number six, who caused a fumble and recovered it, with an assist to Steele and safety Ben Power, sporting number 73. They settled into a groove that stopped their offence on every possession for the other three quarters. Jared Steele, wearing number 66, played both ways and disrupted the quarterbacks all through the second half with six tackles. Quinn Macdonald, Peter Wahls, Jacob Daly, Jacob Lamontagne, Miguel Black, and Keegan Young shored up the D-line. Offense was a different story. Spencer “the tank” Logan, sporting jersey number nine, had numerous runs, one with three guys dragging on him. He had a 30 yard run and then punched it in for the team with his first touchdown. The O-line was led by Jacob (never lets his team down) Lamontagne, Caleb Carrier, Riley Stratton, Jacob Daly, Simon Herold, Owen Cheng, Malik Youla, (who himself handled his position as our other quarterback with poise and expertise of players older than him!). The line aided a 25-yard run weaving and fighting off five different tackles scored our second touchdown. With the game on the line Simon Herold came through with a two-point conversion kick-defence then had two quarterback sacks and thwarted the Bulldogs offence and we won our game 14-13! The last race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – Sooke 10K – took place on Sunday, April 21. Hosted by the Island Road Racers, the race was followed by the series awards. It was a one-two victory for Frontrunners with Nick Walker winning in 32:45 followed by Jonathan Gendron in 33:38. Third was Logan Roots (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 34:01. The Masters race was won by Shay Averbuch in 35:00. Walker and Gendron ran neck and neck until the 6k mark. “I was going for a negative split so I then moved away Jonathan,” said Walker, who is running the BMO Vancouver Marathon on May 5. “I felt good today running controlled downhills and hard uphills.” The women’s race was won by Sara Gross (Mercury Rising Triathlon) in 37:03. Second was Sarah Daitch (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 38:55 and third was Julia Tschanz (Frontrunners) in 39:20. Rhonda Callender won the Masters in 42:44. One age group record was set: Arjan Gelling (Bastion Running Club) in the M65-69 in 39:09. SarahMae Pyndus, recently featured in the Sooke News Mirror, finished 63rd overall, clocking in at 41:29. She was the first in her club, the Sooke Train and Road Runners (STARR) to cross the finish line. “Everything went very smoothly today, the sun came out just as the race started and the volunteers were fantastic,” said Race Director Ken Chew. “We had a good number of registrations and 389 finishers so we were very happy overall.” Geoff Martinson (Prairie Inn Harriers) won the overall series award with 883 points. Jen Millar (Human Powered Racing) won the women’s title with 847 points. Vince Brotherston (Comox Valley Road Runners) won the Masters series with 779 points and Binder

Kelsall won the women’s Masters with 730 points. “This was my first year taking part in the Island Series and I had a great time at every race. I had a chance to meet many people and see some new locations on the Island,” said Martinson. “Next race for me is the TC10K next weekend where I will be running hard to try to win. I will be racing the BMO Half in Vancouver the following weekend and will be looking for a new personal best.” The Prairie Inn Harriers won the club standings, with 3,980 points, second was Bastion Running Club with 2,166 points and third was Comox Valley Road Runners with 1,880 points. The Frontrunners Island Race Series registrations for the 2013 Series surpasses last year’s total by over 450 people. The Sooke Peewee Seahawks football team couldn’t get their offense unleashed against the Cowichan Bulldogs, falling 18-0 to the visitors at Westhills Field in Langford on April 28. The large and aggressive Bulldogs’ defensive front overwhelmed the Seahawks’ offense. Sooke didn’t manage a first down until the fourth quarter, and surrendered an interception return for a touchdown in the second. Defensively, Sooke had some strong performances. Cornerback Tie Boake continued his strong play with a strip and fumble recovery early in the first. Boake has generated a takeaway in three consecutive games. Nick Mason worked hard and was

one of the team’s top tacklers on the day, including two straight to stop a drive deep in Seahawk territory. Safety Alec McKenzie ended another drive with an interception inside his five yard line. Penalties also bit into Sooke’s chances. Two consecutive plays summarized the Seahawks’ day. With the score 12-0, Sooke looked to have a nice second down run to make it third and less than a yard. But a penalty after the play made it third and about 15 instead, forcing a punt. On the ensuing punt, the team took a no-yards penalty which moved the ball to Sooke’s five yard line. One play later, it was 18-0 and game over. The Seahawks look to get back to their win-

ning ways next week against the Peninsula Wildcats on May 5 at

Which is why ear-plugs are sold in motorcycle stores. Add to that the deafening roar of after-market pipes, and you are accelerating your own self-inflicted damage. For the most part, riding a motorcycle is fun. And for the most part, nothing happens. The reason why bikers are on heightened alert when it comes to safety is because when something does hap-

pen, it’s life-altering for the biker. Her life may never be the same. Seems to me that proactively learning defensive riding skills have a better return on investment, when the principle at stake is your health and welfare. After-market pipes result in self-inflected injury in the long run. And if you can’t afford to take a course, and if you want to persist with arguing the benefits of a loud noise to wake-up those sleeping (or texting) drivers, invest in an airhorn. They can be even louder than pipes, and won’t damage your, the

rider, in the long run. Which is, after all, the whole reason why we entered into this conversation to begin with. On one online motorcycle forum on wind noise, “Jaystronghawk” chimes in, “Too Late for me .. But those who can hear .. save the gift .. once [the] damage is done [you] don’t get it back.” Truer words were never spoken. Let’s hope you hear them. here is not a harder working folk singer on the planet than Valdy. He averages 200 to 250 gigs a year. The Sooke Folk Music Society always considers it a great pleasure every time we bring Valdy back to our community. This Saturday evening, May 4, he will grace our stage for yet another memorable performance. “I’ve been lucky,” Valdy suggests. Born Paul Valdemar Horsdal in September of 1945 in Ottawa, an inner city kid, his mother Lillian, was a social worker/psychiatric nurse who ran condoms into Quebec as a family planning advocate. His father Paul Horsdal, was a portrait photographer and outdoors-

When asked about his career’s longevity (38 years of recording and performingaround the world), Valdy says, “I’ve worked with some amazing people, players, like Norm MacPherson, Connie Kaldor; Jerry Scheff and Ronnie Tutt from Elvis’ band, George Koller, session/touring bassist with Holly Cole, Joe Sealy, Shuffle Demons, Loreena McKinnett), innovative producers, Eliot Mazer, who’s worked with Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young; Paul Rothchild, who’s recorded Bonnie Raitt, the Doors; Rob Bryanton; Bill Henderson; Dan Donahue and great songA trio of island choirs will sing together at the 2013 Sooke Community Choir Spring Concert. This will be a power house presentation of voices including special guests - The Allegra Singers and the Barkley Sound Community Choir. The Allegra Singers from Victoria are not your typical choir. They perform a wide variety of music - from classical to jazz, gospel to musical theatre, world music to pop, folk, rock. Their talented director, Jennifer Parlee, has been with Allegra since it started in 1996. If you don’t see their accompanist, Elise Kennedy, playing away at the piano, look for her in the chorus. In 2011, the Sooke Community Choir (SCC) performed in Port Alberni as guests of

the Barkley Sounds Community Choir. This group, known for their humour and cheer, is directed by Bonnie Walbank and accompanied by David Cox. Sooke Community Choir Director, Sarah Wilson, is passionate about bringing voices together and

believes that unifying these three choirs multiplies the energy and fun for both the choirs and the audience. The SCC arrangements are from a wide variety of styles – classical, pop, traditional, folk, and musical theatre. SCC’s choir will be accompanied by the versatile and

writers, like Bob Ruzicka, Lynn Miles, Ron Hynes, Jon Ims, Graham Shaw, Tom Paxton and Mike Williams.” He pauses, pulls his whitening beard, “And I married the right woman.” That woman is Kathleen Mary Fraser Horsdal, Valdy’s creative advisor and wife of 22 years, sharing a lake front home with him, three dogs and a cat, on Saltspring Island. Another pause, then “Is that luck? Or is that moving at God’s speed? I mean, it’s more than strategy that puts these folks along my path.” Few performers are capable of achieving the kind of energy Valdy generates on stage. “Sure I’m good at what I do, and I’m getting better,

I’m paying attention, and I’m learning.” This is evident from two Juno Awards, SOCAN’s Song of the Year Award, four gold records and 16 albums. “But I have lived a charmed life, with a supportive partner, a glorious daughter, Chelah Phoebe Horsdal and two vibrant sons, Theo Koumontaros Horsdal and Yani Horsdal Christie. Bonnie Coulter talks about her show which opened at the Sooke Habrour House on April 30 and runs to May 27. “The subjects of this collection of oil and acrylic paintings were conceived over many contented hours spent out on the Strait of Juan de Fuca fishing, observing and learning the art of lure presentation as that is what wins the day. “I came upon the charming little black ‘Hula Popper’ and its companion ‘Jitterbug’ in an antique shop in Chemainus. I already had a ‘thing’ for fishing lures and this pair stuck a curious cord. I knew, as I drove home with them tucked into my shopping bag, I would never risk losing them to the ocean. Instead they hang around the studio as constant companions now the focus of the painting Waiting Their Turn. As an avid fisherman I have gained an appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistic values of practical inventions that

“Big Boys Gone Bananas” Director Fredrik Gertten

First Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten made a film called Bananas about workers’ health on Dole Food’s plantations in Guatemala. Then Dole attacked and sued Gertten. Time for a new film! On May 8, Awareness Film Night will present Big Boys Gone Bananas, a classic David vs. Goliath story about freedom of speech and what happens to a documentary filmmaker when he goes up against a large

corporation. When Bananas was selected for competition at the prestigious Los Angeles Film Festivals in 2008 suddenly Gertten got a message that the festival was removing his film from the competition. Then a scathing article appeared in a local paper about the film, the filmmakers and the workers in Guatemala, and finally, the filmmaker received a letter from Dole’s attorney threatening

him with legal action. What follows in a true thriller that has Gertten capturing the entire process on film - Dole attacking the producers with a defamation lawsuit, bullying scare tactics, media control and shocking PR spin. This film reveals precisely how a multinational will stop at nothing to get its way. As Dole’s PR company put it, “it is easier to cope with a bad conscience than a bad reputation.” But Gertten does not

Sooke is home both to incredible talent, and to incredible individuals dedicated to nurturing that talent. On April 17, students from Journey middle school participated in a band competition in Port Alberni. Band programs from schools throughout Vancouver Island took part in this regional affair, which is part of a bigger, national competition called MusicFest Canada. On the Journey middle school’s website (journey.sd62.bc.ca) a recent post reads: “Given all their hard work and practice of late, it is not at all surprising that they scored a superior platinum rating.” The available ratings are Bronze, Silver and Gold. For performances that exceed Gold, there’s Superior. And then taking it up to the highest possible, there’s Superior Plus. Joanne Baines, mother to Jordan and Adam Baines who are both in the music program at Journey, spoke to their performance. “A lot of good comments around, the children were very well behaved, the music was wonderful, and the kids had a wonderful time.” Deb Wood, a proud grandparent of a Journey performer, summarized the results. “The Grade 8 band, taught and conducted by Lorna Bjorklund, performed three pieces and were adjudicated with a ‘Superior Platinum’ grade for their wonderful performances! Both the Grade 6 and 7 string orchestras, taught and conducted by Ann McDougal, were adjudicated with a ‘Superior Plus’ grade for their fantastic performances.” The bands’ ranking entitles them to compete in next years national competition at MusicFest Canada, and according to Baines, the competition will

Journey middle school band students excelled in regional competition. probably be held in Western Canada, making it more affordable for the players from Journey to attend. A fundraiser at Christmas time helped secure the funds that enabled the players from Journey to attend the competition at Port Alberni. Additional fundraisers will be held throughout this and next school year to help sponsor their participation at next year’s national competition. Wood warmly recognizes “the teachers, Ms. Lorna Bjorklund and Ms. Ann McDougal, who volunteer their time to teach music and give our students such a great learning opportunity.” Bjorklund, who has been teaching in Sooke since 2008, is the Director of the Sooke Academy of Music and is the teacher who develops the band programs at Journey. She has an academic background from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto with an Associate of The Royal Conservatory (ARCT) diploma for Performers and Teachers. It is the highest academic standings awarded by The Royal Conservatory, and is respected internationally as a teaching qualification. Bjorklund has been with Journey middle school since 2008, and currently develops band programs at both Journey middle school

and Edward Milne community school. She also runs the Sooke Academy of Music. McDougal, who, according to the Sooke Philharmonic blog, has been passionate about the violin since age 12. She played with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble for 20 years and played on-and-off with the Edmonton Symphony for 18. Here in Sooke, McDougal is the Concertmaster and volunteers her time to work with the string band at Journey middle school. If you want to hear the students from Journey middle school perform, there will be a free “Jump on the Bandwagon” concert held at Journey middle school on Thursday, May 9 starting at 7 p.m. As their press release states, “the performance would be of special interest to any elementary students who are considering learning to play an instrument through the band program at Journey middle school (which starts in Grade 6). Teachers, parents, and students will be on hand to share their experiences with the program, the instruments, the commitment, the concerts, the local Sooke Academy of Music, how to earn high school credits by studying music, etc. It’s a chance to find out more, ask questions and see the program in action.”
