Sam Hancheroff – NDP Hancheroff identified the NDP’s priorities as education and skills training.
Declaring support for a healthy forest industry he said that the mill is going to need more logs and offered that the NDP platform plank of reducing raw log exports would help. Hancheroff declared that an edu-
cated society is a society that will prosper. He said the NDP plans to add value to the education sector – “Not to pay more money to teachers but to hire more teachers.” On the use of school facilities by communities Hancheroff said that

Party drops Popoff
KARL YU
Grand Forks Gazette Editor
Mere days after an all-candidates meeting in Grand Forks, the BC Conservatives announced Mischa Popoff was no longer their candidate in the Boundary-Similkameen riding. Popoff writes opinion pieces for newspapers in the Okanagan area and was said to have made some objectionable remarks in some of the columns. He was said to have remarked that the Missing Women Inquiry, which looked into the women that went missing in Vancouver’s downtown eastside in the case against Robert Pickton, was a waste of time. He was also said to have criticized single mothers for raising children without the help of a man. “Mr. Popoff’s various comments were insensitive and disrespectful, particularly to women and single mothers who are, in fact, heroes to their children and their communities in many cases,” the BC Conservatives said in a release dated April 25. “We are a party that believes in a respectful airing of views. Mr. Popoff’s statements were unacceptable and he has been removed as a candidate.” Popoff for his part said he wasn’t going to apologize and explained what he meant to the Gazette. “The commission on missing women was a complete waste of time for the simple fact that there was no disciplinary action taken against the police ... What was the change that occurred after this lengthy inquiry? Nothing,” Popoff said. “Forty-nine women died and nobody gets fired
and that was what I was saying. I didn’t say the missing women were not to be worried about, I said the inquiry was a waste of time,” he said. Popoff also clarified his comment about single mothers. “The statistics show, entering into single motherhood is a very bad idea. If you’re like my mom, and you end up divorced, well that’s a different matter. First of all, that can’t be helped but the statistics also bear out that those kids are better off. Kids are better with two parents and I guess you could even argue they’re better with samesex parents, as long as there’s two of them. Everything’s better with two parents. “I guess the way they worded it was I was running down or attacking single moms but no, I was promoting double parenting,” he said. The BC Conservatives party was contacted for further comment numerous times but had not responded as of press time. Popoff will still run as an Independent and he said that the BC Conservatives didn’t want to see the columns in question. “They vetted me, they knew I was a columnist, they knew I had been writing columns for the (Okanagan Valley Group of Newspapers) for seven years,” he said. At the April 23 all-candidates forum at Grand Forks Secondary School, Popoff angered some attendees with comments regarding teacher salaries, prompting some members of the audience to heckle him. Still, even though he is no longer representing the BC Conservatives, Popoff said he won’t change. “I’ll be doing things the same way. No one wants to hear the mushy middle where all the parties start sounding the same,” he said.

Village asks for budget input The Village of Midway opened up their budget planning process to residents last week by hosting a public meeting to gather input on the upcoming municipal budget. There were 10 people present as Mayor Randy Kappes opened the meeting. “Every year council prepares a list of possible capital projects and ranks them so we want to get input from the public as well,” explained Kappes. “In past years the budget has been set and the meetings that have been held have been pretty much information meetings,” Councillor Dick Dunsdon further explained. “So this is an opportunity to give people some input. The budget is not set. We are prepared to take some comments and answer some questions if we can.” Residents were given a quick overview and asked to rank two lists. The first list, printed as prioritized by the 15 responses, is of general areas that residents feel should have council’s attention: 1) Public works (upkeep of village equipment, water and sewer systems) – The meeting was told that the sewer plant was designed to operate to a maximum capacity of 1,600 people. “In the winter a lot of people leave and that plant is not running an efficient level,” said Dunsdon. “So they are talking about putting a roof or some type of cover over it to keep the heat inside.” 2) Economic development/possible property acquisition and development – This generated a lot of discussion. The mayor explained that there is not much land available for development. “It is vitally important we get more industry in here as soon as possible,” said resident Neil Kopp. 3) Removal of airport lands from ALR to allow future growth and development – This is linked to the economic development point above. “We have very little room to maneuver land-wise,” explained Kappes. “About 70 per cent of our community is in the ALR and they are very restrictive of what we can do with that land.” 4) Municipal water conservation. 5) Capital asset maintenance and improvement (village buildings)
6) Environmental stewardship/energy efficiency. 7) Beautification/Communities in Bloom. 8) Health services – “Residents may want to emphasize supporting and maintaining health services,” Councillor Marguerite Rotvold suggested. In the second list residents ranked various capital projects: 1) Community hall renovations and upgrades – Kappes mentioned the need for handicapped washrooms, heating and air conditioning and kitchen upgrades. He said that unless council was to receive a grant they would need to save money over a number of years for the work. 2) Paving study to determine the best method of maintaining and resurfacing village roads. 3) Riverfront campground expansion/improvement. 4) Medical building upgrades. 5) Municipal Hall upgrades. 6) Public works yard improvements. 7) Lobbying for expansion of Parkview Manor – It was noted that the facility provides housing for local seniors near their families as well as generating employment and helping to sustain health services. 8) Arena side door covers to provide roof over the west side doors so that snow and ice build up does not block emergency doors. Kappes noted later that this would probably be moved up when council did final prioritization of the list. 9) Main welcome sign and rest area to attract tourists and inform people that there is more to Midway than the highway. An earlier proposal had proven to be very expensive. “But there is a possibility to reconsider a smaller version of this project ,” said the mayor. 10) Senior’s buildings upgrades. 11) Museum buildings upgrades. 12) Cemetery beautification and improvement. 13) Old schoolhouse improvement/use – Kappes asked those who ranked this as important to suggest a preferred use for the building.

leave the ranch they have to be wearing a tag so each animal can be traced back to the ranch where it was born. “The ear tags also register a birthdate,” explained club leader Doug Fossen. “Some export markets are age specific so it is very important to have that information recorded.” Fossen said this is the third year of Ranch Horse 4-H in the Boundary MultiClub. “There is Ranch Horse 4-H down in the U.S. and in Saskatchewan and Alberta. But this is the only Ranch Horse 4-H Club in B.C. “It teaches the kids how to handle live-
stock properly – at a nice slow pace. Each one of these calves could be worth $900 to $1,000 in the fall, so we want to be very careful with them. They are fragile and we want to look after them.” Each calf was given the Bar-7 brand. “In B.C. a brand is the only legal proof of ownership,” Fossen explained. “So that’s why we still brand, when they are scattered over 70,000 acres of range we want to be able to prove they are ours and get them home in the fall.” The Ranch Horse 4-H club has eight members all together, ranging in age from 9 to 14.

The local Kootenay Cinch N Saddle 4-H Club hosted the Boundary 4-H District Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, April 6 in the United Church Basement in Castlegar. The five seniors and seven juniors entertained the audience with topics of snow leopards, idioms, kindness, horses, and the Olympics. The speech on “What 4-H has done for me” was very fitting as 4-H Canada is celebrating its 100th year. From its humble beginnings in 1913 in Rolland, Manitoba with potatoes as the first project, it has grown and sustained for 100 years to help develop youth into responsible citizens we can all be proud of. The winners in the juniors were: 1st, Sarah Mac Donald of the Boundary C 4-H Club speaking on women’s hockey; 2nd, Jade Fossen from Boundary C 4-H Club on her accident on her horse Danny and how it could have been prevented; 3rd, Margaret Smith from Nelson 4-H Club on how interesting dinosaurs are.
The seniors winner was Sarah Kobylka of Borderline 4-H Club, speaking on the murder of Abraham Lincoln; 2nd, Joselyn Reynolds of Kootenay Cinch N Saddle 4-H Club on her experience working on the family’s organic farm; 3rd, Sara Vanden Born of Boundary C 4-H Club speaking on technology and its effect on society. The impromptu topic was “Do you think city kids would benefit from 4-H?” A big thank you to the judges Linda Gomez, Brogan Pastro and Brent Wray for taking time to help the 4-H program. A wonderful lunch was served and the awards given out. Sarah Kobylka and Jocelyn Reynolds will represent our district at the regionals in Kamloops the end of May. Introducing the candidates
SAM HANCHEROFF BC NDP Sam Hancheroff was born and raised in Grand Forks, attended school there and went to Selkirk College in Castlegar. In 1971, he moved to Okanagan Falls to start his teaching career at Okanagan Falls Elementary, where he taught for 33 years. Hancheroff was an active community member volunteering with the Ok Falls Fire Department and as an elected trustee for several terms with the Okanagan Falls Irrigation District. He moved to Kaleden, B.C. in 1993 and again was elected as trustee to the Kaleden Irrigation District. In 2004, he ran for school trustee and was elected to School District 53 as a representative for Okanagan Falls. He continues to be a member on both boards at this time. In his capacity as school trustee, Hancheroff travels throughout the district and has numerous occasions to meet with and work with community members. Overwhelmingly, they express wishes to improve learning opportunities for children and adult learners. He also regularly hears from community members about issues or concerns that are affecting their health, lifestyle, job opportunities, and political topics. In addition to these activities, he also manages the family vineyard here in Kaleden, enjoying the opportunity to be involved in the agriculture and viticulture industry. Hancheroff ’s wife Barbra Paterson (a retired school principal) and he have four adult children, and five grandchildren. They both continue to be actively involved in schools and their community, while greatly enjoying being grandparents. Sam is proud to be running as part of Adrian Dix’s BC NDP team in the Boundary-Similkameen. JOHN KWASNICA GREEN PARTY John Kwasnica, a 59-yearold Oliver, B.C. resident of 25 years and long-time Com-
munity Living worker, is the Green Party of BC candidate for the Boundary-Similkameen riding. Raised in a Royal Canadian Air Force family in both Ontario and Europe, Kwasnica joined the Canadian Forces out of high school and as a United Nations’ peacekeeper, was assigned to transport supplies across the Gaza Strip following the Arab-Israeli War of 1973. Honorably discharged in 1976, Kwasnica headed west
and worked in the oil patch out of Edmonton before heading to Vancouver where he met his wife, Angela. The couple has four children – Jason, Cort, Jordan and Alyssa. Kwasnica’s first political association was as shop steward with the British Columbia Ferry and Marine Worker’s Union. In 1988 the Kwasnica family settled in Oliver where John has been attached to the South Okanagan Association for Integrated Community Living. He has lately served as chair of his union local where he acquainted himself with party politics as practiced by the BC NDP. Of his work in the community living movement, Kwasnica affirms the importance of helping adults with developmental disabilities and their families build good lives, enjoy full citizenship and productive relationships in inclusive, supportive communities. He has backed the Green Party in provincial general elections in 2001, 2005 and 2009. “Being selected to run for the Green Party this time further deepens my commitment to Green principles and policies,” says Kwasnica. “I am ready to serve the families of the Southern Interior region as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Boundary-Similkameen.” LINDA LARSON BC LIBERAL I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the readers of the Boundary Creek Times.
I am the BC Liberal Party candidate for the upcoming provincial election for this Boundary-Similkameen riding. My husband Larry and I (married 42 years) moved to Oliver in 1989 and bought the Eastside Grocery, then partnered in the Stedmans/ V&S and finally owned Ruffled Edges until 2003. We have three daughters and four grandchildren. I am currently a town councillor in Oliver, B.C. and was the mayor of Oliver from 1997 to 2005. I am the chair of the board of Community Futures Okanagan Similkameen and also chair the provincial Community Futures board representing 34 Community Futures offices around the province. I am the past vice-chair of the BC Small Business Roundtable (2005-2011) and was on the board of directors of Junior Achievement BC from 2006 to 2011. I have been a volunteer with the Sunnybank Ladies Auxiliary for 24 years, a member of Women of Oliver
for Women (WOW, former Soroptimist Club of Oliver) for 20 years and I have run a free muffin program at South Okanagan Secondary School for the past 12 years. I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the next few weeks and hearing what concerns you most in your home communities.
DOUG PEDERSON INDEPENDENT As an independent, I will be calling our current and past candidates province wide.
I wrote my first computer program using punch cards in 1970. Since then, I have completed a wide variety of high-level business applications in Canada and the U.S. I still tinker with my custom multimedia player and search engine. With my computer background, it will be easy to video interactions and post everything on YouTube and have DVD copies available in all regions. Email and telephone calls will also be available. I believe in total transparency and I have more real world business experience. I will be calling out politicos that don’t work for the peoples’ interest. My loyalty is to the citizens of Boundary Similkameen.

Better than the option Democracy is supposed to be about voters electing someone to represent them. It should start at the constituency level – each party putting their own candidate forward for the consideration of the electors of the riding. Instead the local folks are left out of the process. When all is said and done – only two of the five local candidates got their names and party affiliations on the ballot in a reasonable manner. Political blogger Alex Tsakumis took it upon himself to give Margie Basso and John Slater an offer they couldn’t refuse – withdraw from the race or he would go public. With what we don’t know – they took his offer. The result is that behind the scenes decisions subverted the candidate selection process. Last week the Conservative Party dropped Mischa Popoff. No one can dispute that Popoff is outspoken. He speaks his mind and is quick to do so. After being turfed he argued his comments about single mothers and the missing women’s inquiry were misconstrued. Maybe they were or maybe they weren’t. But the point is – once again the decision of who should represent the people of this riding was tampered with. Voter apathy probably has something to do with this sad state of affairs. We see these kinds of shenanigans going on and we lose faith. But the expectations that a person has placed upon them go a long way in determining how they will behave. Simply put, if we want different behaviours from politics and politicians then we have to start expecting that and insisting that we get it. Meanwhile, don’t lose faith. Get out and exercise your vote in this election. The option to democracy is dictatorship or military junta and we can look at other places in the world to see how poorly those are working for the local folks.

Hugs: To Ron Sather for providing pictures of many events to the paper. Hugs: To all the school kids who cleaned up garbage around Greenwood on Earth Day. Hugs: To Barry Noll for cleaning the windows on Spring Cleaning Day at the Greenwood Library. Hugs: To Linda Thibault and the Red Hat Ladies for hosting a lovely tea for the ladies of Parkview Manor. Hugs: To Lisa Siewert for the photo presentation at Parkview Manor of her family`s trip to Guatemala.
Think before you vote Editor, The Times: “Think before you vote” is indeed a critical action point. One has to be careful for what you wish for. As a victim of government policy, I can attest to the serious impact an election outcome can have on one’s life. In 1972 I graduated from BCIT with a diploma in Mining Technology and I had a job waiting for me at graduation. That also corresponded to the time when the NDP was
elected. Within six months the policies of the NDP collapsed the mining industry and most exploration mining jobs in B.C., including mine. I should not really say I was a “victim” as I voted for the NDP that time. In the 1990s when the NDP was in power, they brought in massive bureaucratic policies for the forest industry. Some were needed, but the majority was just to cover the behinds of the professionals entrusted to manage our resources at an incredible expense in time and money to the forest industry.
These demands resulted in extensive delays which contributed to the massive increase in Mountain Pine Beetle populations with devastating effects on the over-supplied lumber market and smaller rural towns throughout the province, not to mention government tax coffers. In listening to the current NDP policies I cannot help but wonder what negative impacts there will be in the oil and gas industry! Think before you vote! George Delisle, Westbridge
Liberals cannot be trusted Editor, The Times: The BC Liberals under Christy Clark cannot be trusted. BC Liberals said they would not sell BC Rail, then did anyway. People were shocked when this government admitted it was paying the ENTIRE $6 MILLION legal bill for Basi and Virk when they admitted they were guilty, a complete contradiction of government policy. Because of the BC Liberals,
BC Hydro is going to lose $290 million this year, due to paying higher rates for the electricity we are not using, That’s free enterprise. B.C.’s recent budget is not credible. In 2012-13 total B.C. revenue is expected to be $43.1 billion. That’s an annual growth of 3.1 per cent, but the second quarterly report for 2012-13 showed that revenue increased by only 1.9 per cent from the previous year. In the current budget government assumed revenue would increase to $44.6 billion. If revenue continues to grow at 1.9 per cent, revenue for 2013-14 will suffer a $1.1 billion
shortfall. The auditor general, John Doyle, recently released a scathing report on the government’s “carbon offset” program, forcing schools and hospitals to pay more for private-sector “carbon credits”. Under BC Liberals we have had FOUR consecutive deficits in a row. So much for red ink they pledged to “OUTLAW” forever. BC Liberals cannot be trusted. After 12 years of BC Liberal mismanagement, it is time for a change. Gladys Brown, Midway

High honour for Schmidt
Thursday, May 2, 2013 Boundary Creek Times A11
At the recent district conference of the Lions Clubs in Vernon, Kettle River Lions Club member Wolfgang Schmidt was honoured with the Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of his commitment to humanitarian work. The fellowship is the foundation’s highest honour and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion and concern for the less fortunate. Melvin Jones Fellows receive a lapel pin and a personalized wall plaque in honour of their commitment to helping others. The district to which the Kettle River Lions belong includes Washington, B.C. and Idaho. According to Lions literature, Melvin Jones was a Chicago insurance man who wondered why local business clubs could not expand their horizons from purely business concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large. His efforts resulted in an organizational meeting of 12 men on June 7, 1917, which was the beginning of what we know today as Lions Clubs International. The organization has grown to over l.35 million members in 206 countries. It is the largest service or- Kettle River Lions president Stephen Kirkham (left) congratulates Wolfgang Schmidt, recipient of Lionism’s highest honour – the Melvin ganization in the world. Literacy plan begins to take shape A new three-year Community District Literacy Plan for the Boundary began to take shape on April 19 at gallery 2 in Grand Forks. There were 34 people from across the Boundary signed in for the day-long event. They represented partners, interest groups and citizens of all ages. Significantly, two high school students attended – one from BCSS and the other from GFSS. “They were major contributors to the process,” said Community Literacy Co-ordinator Sheila Dobie. Groups worked during the morning to identify future trends, issues, needs and opportunities. Following lunch, groups were formed around specific demographic areas of interest – such as youth, seniors, adult and school age – each identifying three literacy-related actions or initiatives. After each of these groups reported out, everyone was invited to vote for their favourite five initiatives. “The next step is to filter through and come up with some key themes and directions so we can use those as our focus areas for the next three years for our literacy programming,” said Dobie. Once she has a draft plan ready to go she will send it out to each of the participants for review and comment. She plans to have the report done by the first part of June. Joining the Boundary residents for the day was Margaret Sutherland, program manager with Decoda Literacy Solutions – the provincial non-profit literacy organization that works with 102 literacy task groups such as the one that gathered in Grand Forks. Boundary Community Literacy Co-ordinator Sheila Dobie speaks at the beginning of a daylong literacy planning session on April 19.
“We do advocacy work, training, provide support such as a lending library to literacy groups and organizations across the province,” explained Sutherland. Decoda was close to losing a major portion of their funding for the coming year but after an outcry from residents across the province the government restored the money. Sutherland explained that literacy co-ordination outreach funding, which is used for positions such as Dobie’s here in the Boundary was cut in half. “It was funded at $2.5 million across the province for a number of years,” she said. “Last year it was cut to $1.5 million but Decoda topped it up with reserves that had come from the amalgamation of two older organizations – Literacy BC and the Literacy Now arm of Legacy 2010. This year the cut was maintained and we didn’t have any more reserves. So it was really wonderful that the people across the province raised their voices and called, wrote, emailed and we got that $1 million reinstated.” Dobie said that so many people contacted Victoria to protest the cuts that the government had to hire extra employees to respond to them all. “Lots of people across the province engaged in the campaign to get that funding reinstated,” agreed Sutherland. She stressed the importance of collaborative partnerships. “The more that we get together and work together the better work we can do and the more funds we can leverage to do that work. So it’s actually a pretty simple solution, though it takes a lot of work.”

Students prepare for grad
Introducing
Jordan Uyeyama
BCSS grad student Jordan Uyeyama knows where he’d like to be in a few years. His goal is to get a welding ticket from Okanagan College. “My dad taught me to weld when I was 11,” explained Jordan, adding that he also learned mechanical and carpentry skills at a young age. His resume lists employment at Vaagen Fibre Canada, Midnight Towing and, for the past three years, Phoenix Ski Hill. The way Jordan tells it – he started skiing when he was five years old and he hasn’t found the bottom of the hill yet. “I absolutely fell in love with it,” said Jordan. “Now it is my passion and I just try to spend all the time I can with it and try to get as good as I can.” His sport is free style skiing. He started working at Phoenix three years ago, “because I spent a lot of time up there and figured I wanted to contribute. So now I am a lift operator there and assistant park manager.” “I get a say in what happens there,” he says proudly. “I build all of the rails, features and jumps and test them out before we open them up to the public.” For the uninitiated, free style is skiing off jumps and doing spins and flips as well as doing tricks off rails like you see skateboarders do on the handrails of concrete steps. Jordan says he competes each year at the Phoenix Free Style Jam or he will drive up to White Water and compete there. It is a little dangerous though. Jordan says he’s punctured his throat, has 40 stiches in his knee, tore a ligament in his knee, has torn his AC clavicle in his shoulder, had a level three concussion and about four level ones. He says he plans on skiing until he can’t do it anymore though. He’s been training since last winter with the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department. Jordan has lived in Greenwood his whole life. For summer employment he’ll put in applications at Roxul in Grand Forks and at Vaagen Brothers again. When asked to describe his skills he said, “I like using my time efficiently at work. I am really reliable when it comes to showing up. I like to work hard, get the job done fast, on time and to their expectations. I have experience with welding, carpentry, mechanics, ski hill equipment and can run a forklift and loader.” “I am stuck between taking a year off to work or going to the welding course in Okanagan College this fall,” said Jordan when interviewed for this article back in April. Either way he hopes it’s all downhill from here – as long as he’s wearing some skis that is.

Chris Bosovich
The apple didn’t fall far from the family tree when it came to Chris Bosovich. He’s a hard working young man who has an impressive resume even before his high school graduation. He says he’s matured a lot at BCSS. “I am more accepting of people. I used to be kind of a wiener-head – to put it politely.” Asked what he’d like to be when he grows up he said he’s not decided yet, but it would probably involve operating machinery. He was on the school soccer team in grades 11 and 12. “In Grade 12, I was captain of the team with Daniel Hoskin. I learned how to be a leader and how to take on certain responsibilities.” He’s played hockey for 12 years, as goal tender for the last ten. “This taught me how to deal with situations under pressure, and how to control emotions,” Chris explained. When asked to list his skills he replied, “I am pretty mechanically inclined. I can think for myself most of the time. I am pretty responsible when it comes to jobs. I operate quite a bit of heavy machinery working on the farm. Tractor, skidder, bulldozer and stuff like that.” He plans to work either in the bush or as a ranch hand this summer. Chris’ resume lists part-time work during the school year for Chris Robinson Contracting doing dry walling, framing, roofing and flooring. He’s worked for his dad over the last four summers farming and operating heavy equipment. He’d often put in 10 or 12 hour days, sometimes seven days a week. During the summer of 2010 he worked as a plumber’s helper at a local ranch where several houses were being built. “That taught me about using different tools smartly and efficiently.” If that resume doesn’t impress you then the character reference from Career Councillor Pam Storie might just tip the scales. “Chris is a hard worker, she said during the exit interview. “He can get up and get the job done when it needs to be done.” “I am pretty impressed with some of the things you have done,” she told him. “It’s not easy work sometimes and you still do it. This is a really good trait to have and you should be proud of it.” But Chris will be the first to caution anyone thinking they might hire him into an office. “I am not an in-office kind of worker. Being outside is the only way to go in my mind. I like a job where I am always doing something. I grew up on a farm so I am not scared of labour work and getting my hands dirty.” His long-term goal is to attend Olds College in Alberta for a degree in agricultural management or to take training as a heavy equipment operator. He got one thing on his bucket list for sure though – he wants to try his hand at an excavator one day.
Kitimat Clean signs MOU Submitted
Kitimat Clean Ltd and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China’s largest bank, signed Memorandums of Understanding on April 18. The principal provisions of the MOUs state
that ICBC will be Chinese financial advisor to Kitimat Clean and co-operate in the financing of the proposed Kitimat refinery and associated pipelines and other elements. Chinese companies will be involved in the engineering and construction of the refinery. Up to 100 per cent of the output from the refinery is planned to be sold to Asian markets, including China and India. Majority control of all the proposed Canadian businesses will remain in Canada and there will be 6,000 construction jobs created for British Columbians over five years, and 3,000 permanent jobs. The project will include a state-of-the-art world scale oil refinery at Kitimat. It may also include a pipeline between Edmonton and Kitimat, a marine terminal, and a fleet of tankers for the refined fuels. The total cost could amount to $25 billion. It will be the largest investment in BC in the history of the province. It will also provide far more permanent jobs than any other investment has done and generate very large tax revenues for the government. LIU Yanping, Deputy Head of Corporate Banking Department, and HUANG Jifa, Deputy Head of Investment Banking Department, signing on behalf of ICBC, stated “We are very pleased to be working toward a comprehensive agreement to finance a refinery in Canada which is planning to export refined fuels to China and other Asian countries in the future.” David Black, owner of Kitimat Clean, said “A great advantage of the refinery is that it will prevent the shipment of bitumen in tankers off B.C.’s mid-coast. In addition it will reduce global greenhouse gas emissions because it will replace refineries elsewhere that are built to less stringent environmental standards.”

Fair owes volunteers a great debt
Howdy folks. With this year’s Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair theme of “Powered by Volunteers” I thought I’d dust off the pencil again and share some of the stories of the people who worked so hard over the many years that the fair has been running. These are the folks who we all owe a debt far greater than we could ever pay back. They sacrificed their time and sweat to make sure the Fair and grounds were here for the current generation to enjoy and literally built everything from the ground up.
Church Directory
This is the 68th annual Fair in Rock Creek but the event actually started long before that. During the lead up to the second world war things were put on hold in the Boundary, much like they were everywhere else, but in 1946 it was brought back in high form. That year the Fair was a one-day event held on Oct. 4, 1946 and saw 1,000 people attend despite the steady drizzle of rain. It had been some twenty years since the last fair

and it was highly successful. The fair was sponsored by the Rock Creek Farmer’s institute and financed by public donation from generous area residents. The Fall Fair committee at that time was headed by president J.V. Acland of Rock Creek, Secretary R.E. Norris, Treasurer W.E. Hatton and a dozen hard working members. There were around 150 events and classes including a men’s and lady’s tug-of-war and a lady’s nail hammering competition! I wonder how many ladies we’d get out today
if we brought that event back? The festivities concluded with a successful dance in the old Farmer’s Institute Hall, which most of you probably know as the Christian Valley Service building today. Since then a steady supply of dedicated volunteers has worked hard to make sure the Fair continued to be held and that the grounds are here for everyone to use today. From now until September I’d like to share more stories of these fine volunteers as we look forward to celebrating this year’s Fair in their honor. If you have any stories about the Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair and its many volunteers you’d like to share just drop me a note at jollyjack1861@gmail.com.
Tea time Last Friday’s Spring Tea put on by the Greenwood Seniors was enjoyed by many, including Kari Durban (left), Donna Durban, Della Paradis, Karol Johnson, Liz Mann and Jean Higashi.
The parable of the spilled coffee LOUGHEED,
ROBERT ALEXANDER (BOB) March 7, 1924 – April 23, 2013
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our Dear Father. Dad passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years Millie in 2000; his brothers, Lorne and Hugh. Survived by his sister Margaret and his devoted partner Thelma. He will be missed dearly by his children, Linda (Lorne), Dianne (Allen), Norma Jean (Doug), Rob (Jacquie); his 10 grandchildren, Byron, Clayton (Stevie), David, Taylor (Jessica), Kelly-Rae (Duncan), Spencer, Fraser, Alexander, Lauren and Davis; great grandchildren, Willa, Jack and Keith baby due any day! They all loved their “Papa”. After Dad’s early days of logging in Rock Creek Bob and his family moved to Penticton in 1958, where he started another chapter of his life, that of a successful diversified business career. He enjoyed his wonderful motorhome excursions throughout North America; riding his beloved Harley Davidson in the Okanagan, dirt biking with his buddies and being with family for many activities and events. Dad was a lifelong Mason, a member of the Shrine and of the Royal Canadian Legion. The family is grateful for the exceptional and compassionate care given by Dr’s Jack Kooy, Keith Prestiage, Tom Jasper; palliative care nurses, Carrie and Erin, nurses on medical south and all Dad’s thoughtful and kind caregivers. A very special Thankyou. A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 11am at the Penticton Lakeside Resort 21 Lakeshore Drive West., Penticton. In lieu of flowers donations if you so wish to the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation, 550 Carmi Ave., Penticton, B.C., V2A 3G6 would be appreciated. Arrangements in care of Everden Rust Funeral Services, (250) 493-4112. Condolences can be sent to the family by visiting www.everdenrust.com
From the Back Pew ”Just saying”, by the sometimes irreverent Ed Brouwer. No claims of absolute originality are made for this material. As one man said, “I milk a lot of cows, but I churn my own butter.”
A Bible study group met in a home to study how various ministries should work in the body of Christ. One member commented, “I don’t understand how different gifts can work together.” At that moment a woman accidentally dropped her cup, which broke and spilled coffee all over the floor. Each group member responded differently to the mishap, according to their spiritual gifts. The teacher gave some advice. “Next time if Serving the community since 1936 you will put your cup on the coffee table, that won’t happen again.” The administrator responded by organizing a clean-up committee. “Bill, please go find a mop. Sally, could you help him with a towel?” Bill, who had the gift of service, hurried to get the mop. Sally, who had the gift of helps, followed Bill Blaine R. Krist Our staff is committed to and said, “I’ll help you!” your complete satisfaction. The person with the gift of exhortation said, We pride ourselves on the “We all make mistakes so don’t let it get you quality of our service, down.” LOWEST PRICE, and our dedication to the community. The person with the gift of mercy put her arm “We Invite You To Compare” around the woman, patted her hand and said, “I 5920 Kootenay Street feel so badly for you.” Oliver, B.C. The person with the gift of giving exclaimed, (Same location since 1974) “I’ll buy a new set of coffee mugs to replace the Monday to Friday broken one!” 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening, Saturday and They all used their various gifts together to reSunday by appointment solve the situation.

president of the CUPE local representing school support workers noted that 92 per cent of the people she represents are part-time employees and asked for an advocate of full-time jobs that will support them, their families and their communities. “People who work in health care and education live and shop in the local community,” said Hancheroff. There was a question about managing resources in a responsible manner, which Hancheroff answered by saying there is a need for stakeholders within the communities to help manage resources. When asked where the NDP would find the revenue streams to pay for their platform Hancheroff said they would increase corporate taxes to 12 per cent, which he said was in line with other provinces; increase income tax on those earning over $150,000, which he claimed would only affect two per cent of the population; restoration of a three per cent tax on banks and large credit unions with over $20 million in assets; and by reallocating some budget items. John Kwasnica – Green Party Kwasnica got to grab the brass ring of a local family connection to Midway during his opening remarks because his uncle Buster Smithers lived in the village for many years. On the carbon tax he said, “As a Green Party representative I have a belief that the carbon tax is necessary, although I don’t
think it is being utilized properly.” He said the grassroots movement that brought the Midway mill back into production was, “the kind of thing that we need to do around the province. The forest industry in this province is very important. I think it is on the rebound and I would like to see more towns involved in sustaining the industries that they either have or that have fallen by the wayside.” On being effective as a member of the opposition, Kwasnica said, “Just sitting on the other side of the floor pounding our hands on the table we are not accomplishing anything.” He said that school boards have come to rely on rental income from use of facilities by community groups and he called for a meeting of the minds at the community level to sort things out. He said he would favour school closures if it would cut costs for a school district. He said the Green Party is very supportive of the environment. “It is all about the air, the water and the soil. If you don’t have that, what do you have? Global warming is the most significant threat to the world economy, more so than world economic instability right now. We have to address the issue or we will continue to have instability.” Linda Larson – BC Liberal Larson said she supports local businesses, woodlots, community forests and job creation through delivery of services to seniors.
Mischa Popoff (left), John Kwasnica, Linda Larson and Sam Hancheroff all asked for voter support in the upcoming provincial election at the all candidates meeting in Midway last week. Sitting at the far right is Moderator Michael Strukoff.
