Metro Vancouver’s plan to build a waste-to-energy garbage incinerator is the single biggest issue facing Fraser Valley residents, according to Fraser Valley Regional District board chair Sharon Gaetz. puppy. 2013 Kim Demeter said her boys were heartbroken when their yellow-lab named Zoey was snatched from the McNaught Avenue yard last Tuesday. “We are just devastated,” she told The Progress. The family is sharing their stolen puppy story in the hopes that someone saw something suspicious that morning that may help them find her.

They believe the older black lab, Abby, had been secured in the backyard by the dog-napper and thrown some raw meat as distraction. The Demeters found some mysterious chunks that the big dog couldn’t finish, making it clear the puppy-theft was premeditated, rather than simply a crime of opportunity. “A neighbour told us she saw both dogs running loose on the front lawn at about 9 a.m. But I came home to find Abby behind the gate. I couldn’t find the puppy anywhere,” said Demeter. Chilliwack SPCA manager Ivanna Ferris said the phenom-

So it’s definitely something to watch out for, but it’s not that common.” A large wagon sits out front of the Demeter home on McNaught near Yale Road. The neighbour said she didn’t know what to do so she’d tried to put Zoey in the decorative wagon for safekeeping. When they came home, the family found what looked like raw meat mounded into some pea gravel in the backyard, where the older dog had been sick, so they

know something untoward, possibly criminal happened while they were away. “Abby, the big dog, is very protective and would have been barking like crazy.” The pure-bred puppy was nowhere to be found, no matter how hard they looked. They called police and animal control and made reports, to no avail. “I don’t understand how someone could do this,” she says. “We only had her for five days.” Police said it was likely to have been someone in the area. “Maybe someone suddenly has a new puppy that looks like Zoey.” Continued: DOG/ p12

Water will be more visible at candidates’ meeting Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

It’s not going to be your typical all-candidates’ meeting on Tuesday night, said WaterWealth Project campaign director Sheila Muxlow. It’s all about making water more visible. Organizers plan to harness technology and social media with the help of a professional moderator and a live text feed at the WaterWealth all-candidates’ event on April 30 at the Sto:lo Resource Centre at 6 p.m. “It’s an experimental approach,” Muxlow said. “We need to work harder at having democratic discussions about water, particularly with large groups of people at the same time.” The idea is to establish where the candidates stand on water protection and decision-making around local water issues. “So far we have all the candidates confirmed to attend, with the

exception of (B.C. Liberal candidate) John Martin,” she said. Recently declared candidate, Ryan McKinnon, has not yet confirmed either way. The WaterWealth Declaration posits that water is under “unprecedented threat” from industrial activity and development, despite being everyone’s “most precious asset.” The goal is 100 per cent community control over decisions that impact local waters. “It’s a natural evolution to allow more community say,” said Muxlow. “We’re the ones who have to live with the consequences.” Having water health decisions made in Victoria or Ottawa creates problems, she said. “We’re working toward saying those who live in the valley are best placed to be making these types of decisions.” To date they’ve collected 1,077 signatures for their WaterWealth Declaration. It’s a citizen pledge asking political candidates of both

the Chilliwack and ChilliwackHope ridings to take a stance on protecting the home waters and watersheds of the Fraser Valley. “In talking with local residents, we were overwhelmed by the enormous sense of community pride that exists in the living rivers, lakes and streams that flow throughput the Valley,” said Muxlow. “We also heard about a lot of real concerns. People feel our water quality is not what it used to be and are fearful of what will happen to our home waters unless more is done to protect them. It was a last-minute scramble for candidates on Friday as they pushed to submit their registrations before the 1 p.m. deadline for nominations for this election. B.C. Excalibur Party leader and Chilliwack candidate Michael Halliday came in just under the wire. He was so busy helping other Excalibur candidates file their papers, he explained, that he didn’t submit his own until Friday. Because of that, the Chilliwack Fraser Rotary Club withdrew Halliday’s invitation to the club’s all-candidates’ debate Thursday morning, after the club discovered that he had not yet registered as a candidate. Another candidate, Hope resident Ryan McKinnon, submitted his paperwork last week as an independent in Chilliwack-Hope. “We’re against the incinerator, and we’ll block any efforts to have Metro Vancouver’s garbage incinerated anywhere near to here,” said Conservative candidate for Chilliwack, Chad Eros. Indeed, B.C. Conservatives Leader John Cummins announced last week that his party will oppose the WTE project if elected. Liberal Leader Christy Clark told Black Press in March that her government would prevent Metro Vancouver from imposing a WTE project if it negatively impacts Fraser Valley’s airshed. Local candidate for Chilliwack-Hope, Laurie Throness, explained that this would come after an environmental assessment. “The B.C. Liberal government actually passed a law last year in response to Chilliwack’s issue with this, that will require that incinerator to go through a full environmental assessment,” said Throness. The NDP is the only major party that has not publicly denounced the project. Leader Adrian Dix told Black Press that his party will develop a plan for Metro Vancouver’s garbage incineration. Local New Democratic candidate for Chilliwack, Patti MacAhonic, does not believe the incinerator is a good idea. “I know in Cultus Lake in the summer time... with the traffic and everything, our air quality goes down. We cannot afford to have any more pressure on our air quality,” said MacAhonic at the all-candidates’ meeting.

Update: House fire started in garage The garage was fully-involved when fire crews arrived, with the fire extending across the cedar-shake roof and into the two-storey home. At one point burning embers from the fire were dropping on neighbouring homes. Firefighters fought to protect those homes, Josephson said, before entering the structure, confining and extinguishing the fire. Firefighters from four halls in Chilliwack were called in to battle a house fire on Chilliwack Mountain that threatened to spread to neighbouring homes Wednesday afternoon. The fire, which started in a three-car garage in the 8600 block of Sunrise Drive, had already spread to the home when firefighters arrived. According to Assistant Fire Chief Ian Josephson, the owner had arrived home to find smoke coming from his garage. He attempted to fight the fire, but then decided to get his two children out of the house and call 9-1-1.

Just when you thought you were getting old, you’re young again. America wants to charge us for the privilege of visiting. The Department of Homeland Security recently proposed a crossing fee for visitors traversing America’s northern and southern borders. The fee would help the department pay for the ever-increasing cost of keeping Americans safe. And with a deficit already more than a trillion dollars combined with the indefatigable sense of paranoia that has gripped many of that country’s legislators since the terror attacks of 9/11, that cost is becoming onerous. So why not hit up people crossing the border to buy a brick of cheese or fill up the gas tank in their car, or spending thousands of dollars on vacation to California? After all, income tax was supposed to be a temporary measure, and eventually everyone just became resigned to it as a less-than-beloved necessity. A border tax isn’t a new idea. It gets floated every few years and is inevitably shot down by strong lobbying from border states that dread the hit their economies would take if Canadians decided it would be just as cheap to buy their cheese at home. With the smell of gunpowder from last week’s bombings at the Boston Marathon still fresh, it’s a tempting source of revenue; charging the 350 million travelers who cross into the United States every year a few bucks every time they go through a border station would buy a lot of X-ray screeners and bomb sniffing wands. Not to mention pay the inflated salaries and pensions of bureaucrats who cook up and administer such programs. But those travelers contribute $21 billion each year to the American economy, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs. Even chipping away a bit of that would be devastating to a lot of gas station operators, hotels and grocery stores. ~ Black Press

Unravelling the mystery of poor voter turnout If we’re on track to follow the past, this spring’s election is going to be another yawner with a dismal turnout. That’s been the trend both federally and provincially for several decades. The highest recorded voter turnout according to Elections Canada was 79.4 per cent in 1958 and the lowest federally was 58.8 per cent in 2008. Voter fatigue after four elections in eight years got the better of everyone although the 2011 election drew 61.1 per cent to score Harper a majority government. Things are even more grim provincially. In the 2009 election there were 2.9 million registered voters but only 50.9 per cent bothered to turn out, a significant drop of 8 points from the 58 per cent of eligible voters who cast ballots in the 2005 election. Actually the 2009 turnout was a bit of a shock

since there was a record turnout in the advanced polls. So why is that? No one seems to be exactly sure but changing demographics, high proportions of ethnic communities, a frustration with a serious lack of real leaders, negative fearbased campaigns, the same rhetoric, Margaret the same faces, the same sound EVANS bytes, and the same hollow promises. After the last provincial election, surveys showed that voters had become unbuckled from the whole political process and were simply not interested in following the chatterings and musings of elected officials. Voting is a habit both learned

and observed. The older people are the more likely they are to vote. Many people in their midthirties and up vote because their parents did. Seniors vote because they always have, they recognize it as a civic duty, and they still connect with the fact that their parents and grandparents went to war to fight for the freedom of democracy and the freedom to vote. No wonder they represent the highest voter turnout. Of those in the 65-74 age group, 71.53 per cent of eligible voters voted in 2009. Even those 75 and older were better represented (62.49 per cent) than those who were middle-aged. Elections BC stats numbercrunch the trends and the 2009 figures clearly show a correlation between aging and voting. The turnout of eligible voters 18-24 years was only 26.88 per cent,

25-34 years it was 33.69 per cent, 35-44 it was 45.27 per cent, from 45-54 it was 55.69 per cent, and from 55-64 it was 66.26 per cent. In a study by BC Stats titled “Who Heads to the Polls? Exploring the Demographics of Voters in British Columbia”, eight characteristics of voter turnout surfaced. Neighbourhoods with residents most likely to vote included those with a higher median income, larger proportions of older individuals, and a higher proportion of individuals with a university education. But communities where voter turnout rated lower included those with a greater proportion who were new immigrants, a higher proportion of individuals who had moved to the area from elsewhere in the province or Canada, a higher unemployment rate or a higher proportion of individuals not in

the workforce or who had children at home. The study also found that the higher the competitiveness in the campaign race between candidates in the same electoral district, the higher the turnout. Maybe this translates to our fascination with blood sports. But, said the study, a paradox remains. “Since the 1960s, when declining turnout rates were first noted, many of these sociodemographic characteristics have moved in the direction that would suggest higher voter turnout. A greater proportion of British Columbians possess a university education. The conclusion to be drawn is that although sociodemographic factors explain the differences in turnout in a single election, they do not explain the long-term trend of declining turnout rates.”

FVRD should seek public input It seems to me it was a clear lack of interest on the part the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) to hear input or questions from the public after they denied a delegation of regional community members from Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Langley to ask questions at the FVRD Board of Directors’ Meeting on April 23. The regional community group was made up of people who live near Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline, and members of the PIPE UP Network. They decided to attend despite denial of their delegation, and attempted to ask questions during question period.

One question was why the FVRD gave approval to Kinder Morgan to conduct a study in Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional Park so quickly and without any conditions or public discussion. The company has stated its plan to build another oil pipeline through the Fraser valley, but, as yet no application has been made to the National Energy Board for the project. Chairperson Sharon Gaetz cut off input from Abbotsford resident Lynn Perrin and Chilliwack resident Michael Hale. Members of the group were restricted to asking questions about the denial of the delegation, were called

out of order when doing otherwise, and were directed to take their concerns to FVRD staff. Clearly, the FVRD Board is not interested in hearing from the public on this issue, or hearing the public question FVRD Board processes. When I came to the directors’ meeting, my main concern was about Kinder Morgan being given access to a protected area that is home to threatened and endangered species. A while back I had written to the editor about the back window of my truck being broken by some young partiers. I am happy to report that the young man who held the festivities took responsibility of the damage. He should be proud, his family should be proud, he “manned” up to the damage even though he was not the one who threw the rock. I am very impressed with this young fellow, thank you sir, it is nice to see honour in today’s world.

Canadians should get ready to pay more for everyday goods. MP Mark Strahl and the Conservative government are imposing a tax grab on families by hiking tariffs on everything from coffee makers to bicycles. A tariff is a tax, and many of the goods sold in Canadian stores come from countries that will soon get caught up in higher tariffs when they are brought into Canada, raising prices. Costs for baby cribs, vacuum cleaners, barbecues and more will go up by an average of 3%. All in all, it amounts to a $330 million a-year tax grab from families struggling to make ends meet. It will drain our businesses and drive consumers across the border. The measures also hit digital music players too—despite solemn Conservative pledges to never

introduce an “iPod tax.” Other tax hikes in the federal budget—on everything from hospital parking to life insurance—will cost Canadians hundreds of millions more. Incredibly, Mr. Strahl and the Conservatives deny up and down that they are raising taxes—as if your wallet somehow just gets lighter all on its own. Their dishonesty is disproven by all the revenue booked in their own budget numbers. Canadians understand that governing sometimes requires difficult choices. A fixture in the community, the Salvation Army food bank quietly feeds at least 3,800 Chilliwack residents every month – onethird of whom are children. The Sally Ann distributes food entirely free to anyone who needs it, as they have been doing for nearly three decades. To make this possible, the non-profit is holding two food drives in the next week as part of Hunger Awareness Week. “I see homeless people all the time. If it only means helping one person, it means you’ve done something to help the community. To see a smile on a child’s face after you give them food keeps you going,” said food bank coordinator Don Armstrong, who has spent 28 years working at Chilliwack’s Sally Ann. On Saturday, May 4, the Sally Ann will tempt shoppers with a barbecue at downtown’s PriceMart, and encourage dona-

tions through a “Stuff the Truck” campaign, where the goal will be to fill a five-tonne truck with food. On the evening of Wednesday, May 8, hundreds of volunteers will knock on doors from Chilliwack to Sardis to Yarrow, kindly requesting food donations. The Sally Ann is hoping to collect 15 pallets of 30 boxes each; a total of 22,500 items. All the local service clubs, and many other groups such as the fire department, have formed teams. The Sally Ann conducts three food drives annually: May, July, and December. The one next week runs concurrently with the organization’s inaugural pledge drive, because donated dollars go a longer way than donated food, explained Armstrong. “For every dollar donated, we get $3 of value,” he said. The Sally Ann can purchase in bulk, at deep discounts from grocery stores. And inevitably, a significant portion of donated food is expired, and can’t be used. Apart from straight cash dona-

tions, donors can also sign up to monthly automatic donations through a pledge form. “Ever ything that comes into this food bank, stays in Chilliwack,” assured Armstrong. Last March alone, the Sally Ann food bank distributed $30,000 worth of food to 3,800 adults in the community. Of those, 453 were children under three years old. “We make sure the kids are looked after,” said Armstrong. That month the food bank also filled 645 hampers, which are generally boxes, for families who are especially vulnerable, and who passed an interview process. And the Sally Ann gave out $623 worth of household items, such as toothpaste. The food bank shifts 400 tonnes of food annually. Although the soup kitchen at the Yale Road Salvation Army is bare on a Monday morning, before the end of the day, 200 hungry people will lunch there. They’ll go through all the hundreds of day-old bread buns,

donated by local grocery stores, and many will return the next day needing another meal. In Chilliwack, the Sally Ann has the only food bank registered through Food Banks B.C. This entitles it to significant purchasing benefits at grocery stores, and enables corporate donations. The title also registers the food bank under the B.C. Sharing program. Every time that a shopper pays for a bill in Chilliwack at participating grocery stores, such as Save-On-Foods, they can also purchase a $2 donation to the local food bank. In the past five years, the number of people using B.C. food banks has increased by 23 per cent. Nationwide, nearly 900,000 people turn to food banks every year; 39 per cent of those are children and youth. The Salvation Army is still seeking volunteers for the food drive on Wednesday. Chilliwack Relay For Life’s Volunteer Organizing Committee is counting down the days to its 9th Annual Chilliwack Relay For Life Event at Prospera Centre on May 3. Relay For Life is a 12-hour, overnight non-competitive community fundraising event that brings teams of colleagues, friends and families together to take turns walking or running indoors at Prospera Centre. “I don’t think there’s anyone of us that doesn’t know someone who has been touched by cancer” says committee co-chair Corinne McCabe. “On May 3, we invite everyone to come out and support our friends, our families, and our community. Cancer is difficult to understand and coping with a diagnosis is stressful. A donation of $35 will empower one cancer patient with the information they need to better understand their diagnosis and make informed decisions about their health. Families devastated by a child’s cancer diagnosis face overwhelming emotional, financial, and practical challenges. A donation of $35 can be used towards financial support for a family with a cancer diagnosis. One in five cancer patients cannot get to treatment. A donation of $50 could assist with the cost of transporting one cancer patient to a lifesaving treatment appointment, so that they can focus on getting well. A donation of $75 could help with the costs of providing a summer recreation program for a child at Camp Goodtimes. Affordable, welcoming accommodation during treatment away from home can help a cancer patient. A donation of $75 can be used towards the cost of operating lodges in Prince George, Kelowna, Victoria and Vancouver. A cancer diagnosis is frightening and can be very isolating. A donation of $125 will connect one patient with a cancer survivor who has “been there,” providing compassion and emotional support from diagnosis through recovery. Clinical trials are the final phase in the testing of new cancer treatments. A Relay team that raises $10,000 will give one cancer patient access to the newest types of cancer treatment. By meticulously filling in the notebook, you’ll be sure that everything is done that needs to be done. Your notes should include the odometer reading at the time of each routine checkup or major repair job. Also, it would be to your advantage to include a short description of the work done. It is advisable to carry out a monthly check of tire pressure, oil and liquid coolant levels, and belts and lines. The last two things should be checked carefully to ensure that no cracks have appeared. Of course, if there are signs of wear, they must be replaced immediately. Experts recommend changing the engine oil and checking the battery connections for signs of corrosion every three months. You should also check the other liquid levels at this time (brakes, transmission, power steering, and windshield washer fluids). Once every six months you should change your windshield wiper blades, check the condition of your tires, and ensure that your spare tire is adequately inflated, which is something that is often forgotten. Another often forgotten thing to do is make sure that headlights, brake lights, and signal lights are working well. A biannual check should also be made of shock absorbers, muffler, and for wear in the braking system.

What type of car wax to choose? The shelves in the automobile section of big box stores are overflowing with different car cleaning products. Trying to find the best one can be a real headache, particularly when the item you’re searching for is a car wax. CARING FOR THE LEATHER IN YOUR CAR

Most drivers are pretty upset when they spot dents or dings on their vehicles. Trying to maintain bodywork in mint condition can entail large amounts of money. Fortunately, paintless body repair is one of the most inexpensive solutions for restoring your bodywork to its original appearance.

Formerly a luxury for only the richest car owners, leather is becoming much more common in car interiors today. The quality of leather seat coverings and other leather trims differ greatly from one model to another, but their upkeep is fairly standardized. Here are a few useful tips. Leather is the most delicate surface inside a car. Two crucial and inseparable steps are required to keep it well maintained and ensure its durability: cleaning and polishing. Cleaning leather requires using a special product specifically designed for the task. If the surfaces are very dirty you could always clean them first with mild soap and water. Incidentally, water does not damage car-quality leather.

The reality is that your vehicle can never be fully protected from the scrapes and scratches acquired in “hostile” environments such as grocery store parking lots, shopping mall lots, and office parking garages. But thanks to their expertise and unequalled skill, auto body repairers can quickly erase all sign of the dents and dings that may be spoiling the look of your vehicle.

If the leather is light coloured, clean it more frequently, perhaps every month or two, depending on how quickly it tends to get dirty. Two or three cleanings every year should be sufficient for darker leathers. Other than that, your car’s leather surfaces would benefit from being wiped down as often as possible with a damp cloth in order to get rid of any residues that could wear it out prematurely. These residues fall into two categories: dirt, including dust, small pebbles, and sand, which can eventually penetrate and damage the leather; and sweat, whose oils can dry and crack leather over time.

When looking for a reputable body shop, choose a repairer who has the appropriate professional training. With the help of special tools, this specialist will return your car’s bodywork to its original appearance by exerting slight pressure on the back of the metal where the dent is situated. The damaged area is slowly massaged back to its original shape, a millimetre at a time. Paintless dent removal has been around for almost forty years, but the technique is continually developing thanks to advances in paint formulas and in car body materials. The sheet metal used in today’s cars is much thinner and allows for greater elasticity.

Once the leather has been thoroughly cleaned, apply a protective cream to return the leather to its original softness and suppleness. Keep in mind that the dryer the climate in which you live, the more often the cleaning and polishing of leather is recommended.

Car owners should realize that this type of body repair is only possible if the paintwork has not been damaged by the shock or if the metal has not been crumpled or stretched. In those cases, you will have to resort to the traditional method of repairing bodywork.

Your tires have just been changed and you’re ready to hit the road in total safety. Good for you! But did you take the time to check the air pressure in each of your tires? This is one of those little things that we all know we should do but never get around to. Yet taking a moment to do it is one of the most important elements of road safety that a driver can do.

One important element is often forgotten during do-ityourself car maintenance: air filters. Not to be neglected, changing them regularly improves the health of your vehicle as well as your own.

Maintaining the correct air pressure in your tires is as crucial as having the engine maintained on a regular basis. It has even been proven that it is more economical in the long run to check air pressure than to maintain your car’s engine in perfect running order! Why is that? Proper air pressure reduces wear on the tire’s tread, substantially reduces gas consumption, and improves the road holding capabilities of your car, which reduces your risk of having an accident. Tire pressure should be checked once a month. It is also recommended that tire pressure be checked when tires are rotated or during oil changes or randomly, when you fill up at the gas station. It is also important to check the pressure in the spare tire. After all, you don’t want it to be unusable just when you really need it.

Check your owner’s manual to find out when this filter should be changed. If you usually drive in heavy traffic or on dusty roads, it would be to your advantage to have it checked very often.

Experts recommend that this filter be replaced at least once a year to prevent it from becoming clogged. As well as improving air quality inside your car, your air conditioning and ventilation systems will operate much more efficiently.

Storm athletes tear up track Chilliwack secondary school athletes collected 11 gold medals at last week’s district track and field meet. Adrianna Lunt was a star performer in the senior division, taking top spot in the 100 and 200 metre dashes and long jump. Levi Halfpenny did the exact same on the senior boys side, with Jofer Castillo adding

gold in the high jump (1.70m). In the junior girls division, Caitlin Leblance finished first in the 800 and 1500m runs, and Lily Law led the javelin field with a toss of 20.97m. Law reeled in one of six silvers snared by CSS stars, placing second in the triple jump (8.76m). Zuzana Urbaniova

placed second in the senior girls’ 800m run and high jump, and Jonah Castillo scored silver in long jump (4.02m). Castillo added bronze in the 100m dash. On the senior boys’ side, Dom Cote was second in the 100m dash with a time of 12.04 seconds. Mark Dennie placed

Blueliner becomes big bird at UBC Chilliwack native Wes Vannieuwenhuizen will be joining the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds this fall. Vannieuwenhuizen, 21 years old, is graduating from the Western Hockey League after four seasons with the Vancouver Giants. The six-foot-three and 208 pound blueliner played 191 regular season games for the G-Men, netting five goals, 31 points and 416 penalty minutes. “Wes is a big, steady and

tough blueliner who is hard to play against,” said UBC coach Milan Dragicevic. “He was the captain of the Giants and played in all key situations. I like the aggressiveness and leadership that he brings to each game and the fact he is a big body that protects the front of the net and is tough in the corners.” Vannieuwenhuizen celebrated his birthday April 20, and looks forward to joining former Vancouver teammate Neil Manning with the T-Birds.

“Neil has give me a lot of advice and help during the application process, and it will definitely be nice to have a familiar face on the team and somebody to show me around campus,” he said. “UBC is the right fit for me because it is a great university with a solid hockey team and is close to my hometown, which should make for a comfortable transition from the WHL to the CIS.” Vannieuwenhuizen will enter the faculty of Arts.

The style will be reminiscent of other rink or stadium-based HOFs. The BC Hockey Hall of Fame, located on the concourse of the new South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, is a perfect example. BUDVET William (Bill)

March 12, 1920 â€“ April 22, 2013 Bill passed away April 22, 2013 in Chilliwack, BC at the age of 93. Predeceased by his parents, his BUDVET 1st wife Helen and 4 brothers, Felix, George, Alex and Charlie. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Kathleen (Kay), his daughter Linda (Vic) Gentile, and grandson Evan Gentile. His 2nd family, Brenda (Ken) Gendron and Brian (Kim) Miller, his granddaughters, Meagan (Ash) Mucha, and Danielle (Shane) Oâ€™Connor, grandson Liam Miller and great grandson Myles Mucha. Also left to mourn are many family and friends in BC, Alberta and Ontario. Bill was born in York, Ontario, and grew up in the Lions Head area of the province. During WWII, Bill proudly fought for his country in Italy and France. After the war, Bill trained to become a mechanic, and upon completion moved to BC. He married Helen in 1948 and built their home in North Vancouver. There, they started their family, and he worked for Slade and Stewart until he retired after 27 years in their employment as a heavy duty mechanic. Bill and Kay were married in 1985 in North Vancouver, and moved to Chilliwack in 1994. The newly retired couple enjoyed many trips together, camping their way across Canada as well as travelling to Australia, Alaska and Costa Rica. They also enjoyed many cruises including the Panama Canal. The family wishes to thank all of our family and friends for their love and support over the years and especially these past few months. Weâ€™d also like to thank Dr. H. Bright and Dr. Nagdee for their care and also Worthington Rehab Pavilion in Abbotsford. A very special thank you goes to the staff of the â€œRosedaleâ€? at Heritage Village. Your caring and compassion has been greatly appreciated. Our thanks to all of you. (Ryan); great-grandchild, Gabrielle; sister, Emma, Oregon; brothers: Lloyd (Kay), Ken (Shirley), Elmer (Linda), Reg (Lydia ), and Allan (Kathy); numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Harold was born in Anaheim, CA, on August 19, 1925 to Albert and Lydia Dargatz. The family moved to Alberta in 1930 and then to Chilliwack in 1945. Harold married Mildred in 1949. After spending a few years in logging and construction in Alberta and B.C. Harold and Mildred settled back in Chilliwack in 1956 where Harold continued in construction. Harold and his brothers built many houses around Chilliwack and all are still standing today. He then turned his interests to millwork at Lyle Forest Products as Plant Superintendant until his retirement in in 1988. Harold thoroughly enjoyed his many years of retirement pursing the hobbies he loved, fishing, wood carving, gardening, wine making, traveling, RVing and family projects in his shop. Harold was a long-time member of the Chilliwack United Church where he was personally involved in many improvements requiring his craftsmanship. A celebration of Haroldâ€™s life will be held at Chilliwack United Church, 45835 Spadina Ave, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday May 3, 2013. Tea to follow. GAUTHIER Armand Alexander

Armand was born July 7, 1930 and passed away April 25, 2013. He was 82 years young. GAUTHIER The sudden passing of our eldest brother took us by surprise, now leaving 10 remaining brothers and sisters in our immediate family: Solange Popp, Rene Gauthier, Yvette Boruch, Edward Gauthier, Florence Curtis, Melvin Gauthier, Eugene Gauthier, Robert Gauthier, Ken Gauthier and Phillip Gauthier. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Jeanne Gauthier and one brother, Jerry Gauthier. We now come to a chapter in our family when time seems too fast for all of us as age ever-so-quickly encroaches upon us. Armand leaves behind his wife, Estelle Gauthier (Ramsey), and a countless number of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews on both sides of the family. Armandâ€™s loves were music

(playing his mandolin), many hobbies and crafts, gardening, love for nature and the simple things in life. All of these gave him an appreciation for life well worth living. McMULLAN Esther â€˜Louiseâ€™

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Loving Wife, Dedicated Mom, Cher- McMULLAN ished Sister and Best Nana ever, Esther â€œLouiseâ€? McMullan who went to heaven on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the too early age of 63 years. Louise was born on August 9, 1949 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland where she was raised with her four sisters and one brother. She met her future husband at the age of 16 on a blind date. Hedley and Louise dated for four years and were married on September 20, 1969. They resided in Londonderry where they started their own family and Louise worked at a shirt factory before they moved to Strabane where she got a job in a nylon factory. In 1975, at the age of 26, Louise and Hedley packed up their two little girls to immigrate to Chilliwack, BC, Canada where they made their home for the rest of her days and where her family remains. Louise did housekeeping until she started working at Chilliwack General Hospital as a Patient Care Aid for 16 years until she retired early. Louise will be deeply missed by her husband of 43 years, Hedley, and their two daughters, Julie (John) and Joanne (Clayton); her four grandkids: Joel, Jessica, Cassidy and Paige; her sisters: Heather (Ken), Hilary (Tommy), Vivienne (Joe), Sandra, many nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Louise was sadly predeceased by her parents, Joe and Ruby Moore and her precious brother, Raymond. Her favorite pastime was taking care of and spending time with her four treasured grandchildren. She played endless games of cards, checkers, Snakes & Ladders and never let them win as she always thought it was best to teach them a lesson. Nanaâ€™s taxi went all over the place and she was a constant at their schools and sport events. Mom hosted weekly Tuesday night dinners for us as her family was everything to her. Outside of family, Louise loved playing darts, playing poker on the computer, watching her soap operas and enjoyed reality shows like â€˜Dancing With The Starsâ€™ and â€˜The Bachelorâ€™. Any time spent with family and friends made Louiseâ€™s day and she valued each and every one who was lucky enough to know her. Louise was so

kind-hearted and caring. They donâ€™t make them like her anymore, she was an amazing woman who can never be replaced or forgotten but will live on and around us forever. McCRACKEN Mary Ruth

(nee Crane) March 19, 1930 â€“ April 16, 2013 Mary passed away peacefully with her family by her side April 16, 2013. Mary spent her final McCRACKEN days with her sons David, Mark, Keith, and daughter-in-law Chalermluck (Tui). She lived out her lifeâ€™s wish in her beloved home on Fairfield Island, Chilliwack. Born March 19, 1930 in Coventry England to William and Ruth Crane. At a young age Mary was affected by the Second World War during the â€œBlitzâ€?, where Coventry was heavily bombed forcing the family to move to safety in rural Rhyl on the north Wales coast. She completed school during the war years in Wales; post war Mary trained as a professional Stenographer and worked locally in Rhyl. In 1952 Mary traveled to Canada to meet friends and wartime pen-pals. Sailing from Liverpool to Montreal where she worked saving rail ticket money for onward travel. During this fateful train journey west to Indian Head, Saskatchewan to visit friends she first encountered her future husband William (Bill) McCracken returning to his regiment in Calgary the Lord Strathconaâ€™s Horse (RC) following the Korean War. Later, working as a professional stenographer in Calgary, Mary bumped into Bill by chance on a busy street. Marrying in 1955 Mary devoted herself to creating a strong family and loving homes in Calgary, AB, Barrie, ON, Hemer and Lahr, West Germany, and lastly Chilliwack B.C. Energetic mother encouraging fishing, camping, hockey, soccer and baseball she tirelessly grew a loyal family. Sadly, her husband passed away in 1982. She remained dedicated to maintaining a home for her family and friends. Mary was an enthusiastic and active volunteer serving the Chilliwack community for many years. As Community

Services receptionist, many in this community heard Maryâ€™s cheerful and helpful voice. As a long-time Weight Watchers member Mary achieved her goals early; she remained active encouraging others to achieve theirs. An avid traveler Mary journeyed throughout North America, Europe, and SE Asia, meeting many new friends, including the Thai Royal family Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and the Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson. Our beloved Mother, Adriana Vander Spek, resident of Chilliwack, passed away peacefully on VANDER SPEK We d n e s d a y, April 24, 2013 at the age of 92 at the Bradley Centre. Mom was born in Grootammers, The Netherlands on October 20, 1920. On August 26, 1943 she married Matthew Vander Spek. The first four children: Lydia, Joann, Jeannie and Annie were born in The Netherlands. In 1953 the family immigrated to Chilliwack. Mom is survived by her seven children: Lydia (Martin) Maljaars, Joann (Archie) Maljaars, Jeannie (Ben) Kanis, Annie (Adam) Slingerland, Ernie (Mary) Vander Spek, Nellie (Hank) Van Dyk, and Peter Vander Spek: also 39 grandchildren, 105 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Mom is also survived by two brothers and a sister in The Netherlands. She was predeceased by her husband Matthew Vander Spek in 2006, and two granddaughters, Laura Maljaars in 1998 and Diane Royal (Slingerland) in 1999.
