Though each club has its own unique focus and approach to its service, Rotarians around the world follow what is known as the Four-Way Test. Translated into more than 100 languages, the test asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do, • Is it the TRUTH? • Is it FAIR to all concerned? • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Rotary’s commitment to service above self is channelled through its avenues of service, which form the foundation of club activity. • Club service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.

• Vocational service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. • Community service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. • International service encompasses action taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe, and to promote world understanding and peace. • New generations service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, including Rotaract and Interact. Whether working on a global or local level, in an 80-member club or a group of 10, one thing all Rotarians have in common is their commitment to taking action. If you’re a veteran volunteer or new to community outreach, Rotary is looking for people willing to work hard and put Service Above Self. Semiahmoo RotaRy Club The Semiahmoo Rotary Club was chartered in 1989 and, as one of the bigger local clubs, currently has 64 members. The club’s longest-running event is their Annual Charity Golf Tournament, now in its 24th year. To date, the tournament has raised more than $1.2 million – $750,000 of which has gone Semiahmoo Rotary’s Wine and Dine. to the Peace Arch Hospital and Alfred Anderson photo Community Health Foundation. This year’s Charity Golf Tournament is set for June 12 at Hazelmere Golf Course. For the past 12 years, the Semiahmoo Rotary Club has hosted a Wine and Dine fundraiser, featuring 16 restaurants along the beach and in Five Corners. Participants visit four restaurants throughout the evening, spending about 45 minutes at each one. While the club sells tickets for the purchase of alcohol, the restaurants supply all the food at no cost, making this a tasty and lucrative fundraiser – it usually raises about $23,000-plus. A portion of that money is allocated to the club’s international efforts, including the polio vaccination campaign, cleanwater initiatives, relief work in Haiti and more. One of the club’s newest events is the SASSY Awards, which stands See page 6

Rotarians reach out locally, internationally From page 11 for Service Above Self Surrey Youth. The event recognizes local youth who exemplify the Rotary Club motto of ‘Service Above Self,’ and make a difference in their community. Last year, there were more than 100 nominations; this year the club is expecting even more names to be put forward for awards in seven different categories. The club also offers scholarships to students at Elgin Park Secondary and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and has taken part in a number of community-improvement initiatives around White Rock / South Surrey. Each year before Christmas, Semiahmoo Rotarians and their friends purchase several $1,000 Safeway Gift Cards. Safeway in turn gives the club 8 per cent cash back which they give to the local food bank. The food bank is able, with their purchasing power, to triple the amount of food purchased for the families that use their services. As well, the Rotary club purchases additional gift cards, food hampers and Christmas gifts for a Surrey women’s shelter

The club’s diverse reach throughout the community is one of its most appealing factors for Belziuk-Zanni, who originally joined Rotary in Edmonton when she was in her 20s. “There are so many different arms to the things we do, that’s what makes it so exciting,” she said. “And they do it in such a professional way. The club works hard throughout the year to maintain the park – planting flowers, pruning bushes and cleaning up weeds – after “adopting” the park in 2010. The club has also raised money for a makeover of the South Fraser Women’s Service Society, donated thousands towards the Sources Food Bank and just last year raised the funds to purchase a new van for Camp Alexandra to help out with transportation needs. Over the years, the Rotary Club of South Surrey has held a variety of events to raise money for these important local – as well as international – projects. In September the club hosts its annual Chili Cookoff, in conjunction with the White Rock Business Improvement Association, which pits local restaurants in a delicious battle for the title of best chili in the community. The newest of the community’s Rotary clubs, in operation for five years, is the Rotary Club of White Rock-Peninsula. Like other clubs in the area, Peninsula Rotary Club contributes time and money to several local organizations, but also has a heavy focus on international aid efforts. The club’s main initiative over the past five years, according to president Dennis Williams, has been working with the Rotary Club of Cancun in Mexico to offer assistance, equipment and infrastructure to some of

the area’s impoverished citizens. Earlier this year, the club delivered 150 wheelchairs that were distributed to Mexicans with mobility issues, including wheelchairs that were specifically designed with head and neck support for Peninsula Rotary’s annual Pooch Parade event. people with cerebral palsy. The club has also worked closely with CRIT (Children’s Rehabilitation Center Telethon) – which has built upwards of 25 children’s hospitals in country – and has donated several wheelchairs for their outpatient program. Also in the Cancun area, the Peninsula Rotary Club has facilitated three water projects, which included drilling wells, supplying a 10,000-litre tank and setting up a distribution centre for villages of around 200 people. The club is also helping out with a community centre and school in one of the poorer parts of Cancun. On a local level, the Peninsula Rotary Club has been running a program aiding the South Fraser Women’s Services Society. Members hold weekly bread runs, with the help of Cobs Bread, and deliver around 10,000 loaves of bread to the shelter every year. The club also provides grants, scholarships and supplies to the South Surrey/White Rock Learning Centre, and facilities and sponsors a variety of youth-oriented programs, which Williams describes as “life-changing.” The club’s main fundraiser, which took place earlier this month, is

t would be hard to find a resident on the Semiahmoo Peninsula who doesn’t have a connection to Peace Arch Hospital. Whether being treated at the ER, delivering a baby in the maternity ward, or receiving residential care in the Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion, Peace Arch Hospital is a true lifeline for the community. The local Rotary clubs recognize the essential role the hospital plays in the health and well-being of its community members, and have a rich history of helping raise funds for essential equipment and upgrades. According to Jackie Smith, executive director of Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation, the support the foundation has received from Rotary over the years has made a “significant” impact. “Rotary is an exceptional community leader in many communities,” Smith said. “They’re so community-
In the tournament’s earliest years, Smith recalled foundation and hospital staff taking a hands-on role in the event. “The chef from the hospital used to actually prepare the food for the golf tournaments,” she said. “I think it’s indicative of the ongoing relationship and how we’ve partnered together in some unique ways.” The funds raised by the Semiahmoo Rotary Club have gone a long way at Peace Arch Hospital. A wide range of equipment has been purchased thanks to the club’s hard work – including a patient van that the residential care team uses to take patients into the community. The club also sponsored the rehabilitation gym in the hospital’s new wing on the fifth floor, completed in 2007. Most recently, the Semiahmoo Rotary Club sponsored

Jackson McDonald was born at Peace Arch Hospital on Nov. 23, to proud parents James and Erin. As first-time parents, knowing there would be adequate space for them to deliver at Peace Arch Hospital – something that wasn’t always the case prior to the new maternity ward being built – was one less thing for the couple to worry about. “There was ample space, I didn’t have to get shipped to another hospital,” Erin said. “When I finally went into labour, I knew they’d have room for me there.” Erin noted that the birthing suite itself was spacious, private and perfectly equipped for anything they would need during and after labour. Having all the supplies close at-hand was particularly beneficial, she said. “From the moment I had Jackson, because of all the equipment they had in the room, he never had to leave my side.” Familiar with the old maternity ward, Erin said the improvements in space and amenities that have come with the new suites are remarkable. In particular, the spacious, private bathroom – complete with shower and tub – was very convenient. “I thought the rooms were really well-equipped and well thoughtout for the experience,” she said. “Birthing is more than just a medical procedure – you’re bringing life into the world.” See page 13

Learning to live again From page 11 Another major project completed in recent years on the Peninsula is the Centre for Active Living at Centennial Park. The Rotary Club of White Rock was one of several partners instrumental in helping bring this state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility to fruition. Through the club’s fundraising initiatives – such as their annual book sale at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre – they raised $250,000 for the Centre for Active Living, funding one of the gyms where the Cardio Rehabilitation program runs. The program is an expansion of a successful Peace Arch Hospital program that ran out of the Mel Edward’s Centre. It aims to keep people healthy and out of the emergency room, rehabilitate those who are sick and help those suffering with chronic disease with the use of exercise, diet and lifestyle education. For Peninsula resident Bob Thornton, the Cardiac Rehabilitation program – of which he is a former participant – was a life-changer. Thornton’s heart problems started when he was 54 years old. While he never suffered from a heart attack, he had what he describes as an “electrical problem.” He underwent surgery to address the problem, and although that helped physically, he said he suffered lasting psychological effects. “It’s not just a physiological problem – there’s an emotional one, too,” he said. “I think it’s quite common with patients. You’re almost afraid to move.” Aside from the physical benefits Thornton gained from participating in the Cardio Rehabilitation program – which came from working out slowly
Bob Thornton now leads an active life. and steadily under the close watch of a trainer – he said the emotional benefits were huge. “It got me back to a place of having the confidence to move, to walk and to run,” he said. Now 60, Thornton said he is more active than he was in his 20s. He’s an avid runner – he has taken part in a number of halfmarathons – and he recently completed a 100-mile cycling trip through the United States desert. Though Thornton took part in the program at its former location, he said having the new space for participants to attend the program is extremely beneficial. “It gives people the confidence level back to function in life, to get their lives back.” Innovative facilities such as the Centre for Active Living and the new maternity ward at Peace Arch Hospital wouldn’t be possible without the help of local Rotary clubs, Smith acknowledged. “On behalf of the whole community, we want to say a special thank you and acknowledge the great work that Rotary is doing,” Smith said. “Their continued commitment to health care is amazing. They’re really making a difference.”

almost a reality Peninsula resident Christiana Flessner – a member of the Semiahmoo Rotary Club – is one of thousands of Rotarians who has volunteered to travel abroad and aid in the vaccination efforts. It was through a different kind of foreign-aid work – delivering wheelchairs to disabled people in impoverished countries with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation – that she realized how many people who needed the wheelchairs had become paralyzed by polio or post-polio Ethiopian children after being immunized. syndrome. “Whenever I travelled, there was always a percentage of people who had polio, and that was the reason they needed the wheelchairs,” Flessner explained. The more Flessner learned about the disease, the more she realized that taking the steps towards eradication was a no-brainer. “This is one cause that we can utterly and completely eliminate.” See page 16

Gates, actor Jackie Chan, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu, golfer Jack Nicklaus and Grammy Award-winning artist Ziggy Marley were among the celebrities to take part in the campaign. For Flessner, the fact that complete polio eradication is almost a reality is a huge point of pride, but at the same time frustrating. “I’m very impatient for it to happen,” she said. “It’s such an utterly senseless disease.” She also worries about people treating polio with complacency, noting it wouldn’t take much for the disease to rebound. “People always think that polio is in far-away places, so why do we bother (immunizing)?” she said. “If we don’t end polio, there is a big risk of this getting away from us again. “Until the world has no more new polio cases, no child is safe.”

Peace Forum Earlier this year, 60 students from three local high schools gathered to discuss an important topic – peace. The forum, held at Panorama Ridge Secondary, was the brainchild of longtime Rotarian Derek Lucas, who sadly passed away just a few weeks before the event was held. In a speech written for the forum by Lucas prior to his passing, he told the students, “As you move ahead you will develop a formidable list of conflicts that need resolution. Don’t be intimidated, it is your generation that will resolve the problems.” The students were deeply impacted by Lucas’ words, according to his daughter and event co-ordinator Charlene Eggito. “The students really enjoyed coming together, especially because they come from schools that are sometimes competing,” Eggito said. “It was neat to see them all working together.”

Rock RCMP and the Surrey Safe School Program. The Rotary Club of South Surrey plans to run informative sessions with students in the community at the beginning of the school year with the hopes that they will start the year with an anti-bullying message fresh on their minds. In March, the club held its annual Fool’s Night Out fundraiser, bringing in $7,000 for the campaign – further details of the project are still being finalized.

For over 11 years I have been involved with Rotary and am proud of all we have accomplished both internationally and locally. I recently returned from Mexico where members of my club, Rotary Club of White Rock Peninsula, delivered over 150 special wheelchairs, visited our ongoing water projects and community school construction project. Our next local project is to work with the City of White Rock on enhancing parks and recreational areas as well as continuing support for the South Surrey - White Rock Learning Center, and Women’s Centres. Giving back is important to me and being a Rotarian allows me to do that!

The new generation of Rotarians
L
ike many teenagers, Surrey’s Jonathan Bucyk didn’t always have a strong sense of the direction his life was taking him. All that changed, however, when the Lord Tweedsmuir student attended a Rotary Youth Adventures in Leadership conference in January. “It just blew my mind,” Bucyk, 16, said. “I realized all the opportunities that are out there.” Bucyk became involved with the YMCA Panorama Interact Club, sponsored by the Semiahmoo Rotary Club and created for teens 15 to 18 years of age. He has been involved in fundraising for the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation – the club even sent four members to Mexico last year to deliver wheelchairs to those in need – and has his sights set on club presidency for next year. Bucyk said the experience with an “amazing” club such as Rotary has been extremely valuable for him. “It’s really opened up my life and opened my eyes to all the possibilities I have in my future.”
Interact Club member Jonathan Bucyk. Providing those opportunities to local youth is the main goal behind Interact, according to club supporter and Rotarian Darren Mumford. With the same outlook and goals as Rotary International – supporting people local and internationally with time, talent and treasure – Mumford said the club offers a chance for teens to expand their horizons in a positive way. “For the youth themselves, it’s an
opportunity for them to be positively engaged in the community and develop some leadership skills,” Mumford said. “A number of them have found it very beneficial when they are applying for post-secondary programs and jobs.” The club is run completely by the young members – they elect their own directors, run their own meetings and come up with their own projects. Fundraisers have included movie nights, dances and concession stands, and members often help out with events hosted by local Rotary clubs as well. Above all, according to Bucyk, it offers a chance for local youth to help out their community and better themselves. “How can you explain an amazing organization that puts you out there in your community and teaches you more about your own life than school can?” Bucyk said. “Instead of just wasting my time doing things that most teenagers do, I’m changing the community and growing as an individual.”

Now in its third year, the SASSY Awards are set for Nov. 1 at the Bell Centre for Performing Arts. The event has grown considerably since its inception, and this year has snagged the City of Surrey and Kwantlen Polytechnic University as lead sponsors. Brooks said he hopes to have more local Rotary clubs come on board as award sponsors as well. “Ideally, we’d like to have it involve every club picking up and

ou don’t have to look far across Surrey and White Rock to find dedicated Rotary club members, working hard to make a difference in their community and beyond. But there is also a new generation of difference-makers in our midst, teenagers and young adults who are embodying the Rotary motto of ‘Service above Self.’ The Semiahmoo Rotary Club, in partnership with the Rotary Club of White Rock and the Central City Rotary Club, wanted to find a way to recognize youth throughout the community who are contributing in positive ways. In 2011, the SASSY (Service Above Self Surrey Youth) Awards were launched. Event chair Bill Brooks said that from the beginning, the idea was to create a fun evening of celebration for the youth, beyond a simple awards ceremony. “We wanted to do a show, make it a big event,” Brooks explained. “We wanted to have it focused on the kids themselves, the aspect of ‘youth helping youth.’”
