burnaby’s Jill costantino, 35, was in boston with her mother, Pat cranston-calder, 65, of sarnia, ont. to run in the marathon.
A Burnaby woman’s love for her mother likely helped save her life at the Boston Marathon Monday. The prestigious running race was marked by tragedy after two bombs went off near the finish line, killing three and injuring more than 170 people, many critically. Jill Costantino, 35, was in Boston with her mother, Pat Cranston-Calder, 65, of Sarnia, Ont. “It was a lifelong dream of theirs to do this together,” said Jill’s husband, Lorenzo Costantino on Tuesday. “She’s running with her mother, who obviously is quite a bit slower than her, which actually turns out to have been a very good thing.” After years of trying, and struggling through illness, the mother-daughter duo finally qualified for the race together this year, just barely, according to a recent article in the Sarnia Observer. The original plan was for Jill to run ahead. “She would have been at the finish line waiting for her mom,” Lorenzo said. “About a month ago she decided, ‘you know it’s so cool, why don’t I just run with her instead of run ahead.’ She didn’t really care about her time or anything.” As Jill said of her mom to the Sarnia Observer, “It’s so amazing watching her progress and how excited she gets about the races. She’s always been there for me ... and it’s cool to have this kind of experience with her, to be her support.” That decision likely saved Jill from injury. But it was a tense few hours before Lorenzo knew their fate. He got a phone call telling him what had happened and ended up glued to a TV set following the news, all while not saying anything to their six-year-old son who was in the room. 1 12-03-05 4x1.25_small_appliances_ad_final.pdf Please see bombing, A4

Lougheed’s turn to become high-density neighbourhood: Mayor City’s longterm planning encourages investment Wanda Chow

First came Metrotown, then the towers at Edmonds and Brentwood. Now it’s Lougheed town centre’s turn to be transformed by high-density development, said Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan in his state of the city speech to the Burnaby Board of Trade Wednesday. “Starting now, Lougheed town centre begins to transition from a mall-based economy to more compact, high-density development,” CorrigAn Corrigan said. “The longawaited confirmation of SkyTrain’s arrival offers Burnaby yet another opportunity to maximize the utility of public transportation.” Burnaby city hall is in “initial discussions” with Shape Properties, the owner of Lougheed mall, on what form a redevelopment of the site might take. The results of the preliminary discussions will be the subject of public consultations later this year. But while the city has secured some amenities for the Evergreen SkyTrain line’s Burnaby section, it was unsuccessful in its “desperate struggle” to have the preparatory work for a future Cameron Street station included, Corrigan said. “The provincial government refused our offer to pay 50 per cent of any additional costs, making the addition of another station in the future highly unlikely.” Meanwhile, development continues at the city’s other three town centres which were planned 1:20 PM out decades ago.
