We grow up, then grow old. A century ago people would be in awe if they knew how much longer the life span of human beings would become. While it is comforting to us to know that many of us will live into our 80s and 90s, this fact also places a burden on our health care system. When complex care is required for seniors, they are moved into a setting that meets these needs. Barb Stevenson, executive director of Fir Park/Echo Village, said it is

Many seniors want to remain in their homes to retain control over their lives. “And we know that in general, people are healthier when they live in their own homes. In 1988, the average resident lived at Fir Park/Echo Village for 5.5 years. Today, it is less than a year. The average age of residents is close to 90. Angel to outfit WCGH with kids jammies Niomi Pearson Special to the News

Angel Magnussen has started a non-profit company that will produce colourful kids pajamas which she wants to distribute to hospitals across B.C. ngel Magnussen wants to help make hospitals a less scary place for children. The 17-year-old, who has helped raise approximately $260,000 for children’s charities since the age of five, is now focusing efforts on her new non-profit company: Hugginz By Angel. The company is driven completely by donations, financial grants and volunteer power. It aims to outfit hospitals across the province with sets of colourful flannel pajamas, gowns and blankets for children to wear during their stay, starting with West Coast General

Hospital. Angel, her mom Cheryl, and several volunteers have been hard at work sewing the garments, which come in a variety of sizes from toddler to teens. “They’re really cute, they’re soft, they’re fun and kids love them the moment they see them,” Cheryl said. “We’ve been creating our own patterns, and making them simpler to sew, and a simpler fit for the kids.” A total of 25 sets will be donated to West Coast General Hospital. As the success of the company grows, donations will be made to BC Children’s Hospital, Variety, and other hospitals across the province. In time, the company hopes

to provide enough Hugginz products for hospital auxiliaries to sell in the gift shop, with proceeds going directly back into the hospital. Born with Down Syndrome and many other complex health issues that have required frequent and extensive medical road trips to Victoria and BCCH since birth, Angel is no stranger to the inside of a medical facility. “She’s always been scared to put on hospital pajamas, it just adds to that fear of the medical situation,” Cheryl said. Angel said she decided to sew blankets and pajamas for sick kids to help take some of those stresses away. The name Hugginz was an

Now in Grade 11, Angel has been looking to plan her future and running a non-profit company was a natural fit. “Her number one goal all the way through has been to help sick kids,” Cheryl said. “That’s what she lives for.” The venture has even led to the young philanthropist landing her first job – just last week, Angel accepted an at-home job sewing medical sleeves for arm braces for a Nanaimo orthotics company. “While we could use a few more beds, we have actually met the target in our community,” Stevenson explained. That is not to say the system isn’t being used to its full capacity. All fully-funded beds at Fir Park and Echo Village are filled, and there is a waiting list when vacancies become available. But Stevenson said Alberni has more health care services overall than many similar-sized communities, thanks in large part to the spirit of advocacy in the people who live here. “We have the services - we have a hospital. And we have a lot of volunteer services,” she said. “As long as we continue to fight we will be OK. That is why we are in good shape. We are so

stubborn, we just won’t give up.” She pointed out the similar-sized communities, Nelson, B.C., for example, have lost their hospitals. But a strong public outcry here prevented a similar closure of the Port Alberni hospital in the fairly recent past. Keeping seniors healthy is not just about providing medical services, it is about keeping them safe from harm. Earlier this year, a series of four home invasions targeting seniors in Port Alberni - one of which resulted in a homicide - rocked the city. Police are still working hard to solve the murder of 75-yearold Mervin Hankins, and to determine whether or not these crimes were linked. Since the attacks, police have made a strong effort to

reach out to seniors in the community with two messages: Port Alberni is a safe place for seniors to live and; there are simple steps they can take to minimize their vulnerability to crime. There have been no similar attacks since, but Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said “seniors are vulnerable on many levels. “They are more often targeted by fraud and scam artists, who take advantage of many seniors’ trustworthy natures. And they can be targeted for other crimes because they often live alone and can appear to be easy targets.” During Senior’s Week last year, police set up a booth at Echo Centre to reach as many elderly residents as possible. Officers gave out

safety literature and talked to residents about how to keep themselves and their homes secure. wwThey also reached out through groups like the Sunshine Club. Allan said simple steps seniors can take to avoid harm include communicating with their trusted neighbours and relatives, not opening the door to strangers, not giving out personal information over the phone and ensuring their doors and windows are securely locked at all times to prevent the possibility of thefts and break-ins. She added a community is only as safe as it’s most vulnerable residents, and we all have a responsibility to look after our own health and welfare, and that of our friends and neighbours.

popular travel website describes Taxco, Mexico as a picturesque town where you can find open-air markets and high-end boutiques. But a Port Alberni woman wants people to see past the hype after her brother was recently found bludgeoned to death and robbed there. Former Port Alberni resident Pat Jordan was found dead in his hotel room by Taxco police on March 27. He was 64. According to Jordan’s sister Dora Moen, Taxco officials reported that he died from blunt -force trauma to the head, and that he’d also been robbed, she said. Jordan operated a small jewelry retail business on the Lower Mainland, where he also owned a home. “He’d been on a jewelry-buying trip down there just like

he had been a lot of times over the years,” Moen said. “People think it’s safe to go there. I’m sure Pat thought it would be safe to go too and what happened?” Taxco is located in the Mexican state of Guerrero, and has a population of 50,000 people. Silver mining, silversmithing drive the economy of teh seemingly idyllic tourist locale. But news websites paint a darker picture. In 2010, the Washington Post reported that Taxco was the site of a mass grave where the remains of 64 people were found. All were victims in Mexico’s narco war between feuding drug cartels. The Canadian Foreign Affairs office reports that Canadians should think twice about travelling to areas of Mexico that are experiencing “...high levels of organized crime and urban violence.” Gurerrero

To make matters more difficult, the funeral home in Mexico is charging $6,000 to cremate Jordan and send his remains to Vancouver. Jordan grew up in Port Alberni and was one of five children — three sisters and one brother. One sister and brother are dead now, as are both parents, Moen said. Life-long friend Don Nichols remembers Jordan as a free spirit who liked to ride motor cycles. “He was in the CBC documentary called ‘Young In A Small

Town’,” Nichols said. Jordan left Port Alberni shortly after graduating from high school in 1967 or 1968 and never really came back, Nichols said. “He travelled to Europe, Istanbul, Mexico. He travelled the world like I wanted to,” he said. The pair stayed in touch over the years but contact waned in the last decade. The last time Nichols saw him was five years ago in Vancouver. “We went down to Commercial Drive, sipped coffee and talked old and new times. You’d think we saw each other last week,” he said. “He seemed a bit troubled, but that’s how it is for some people after they lose their last parent.” Work is underway to secure a death certificate and find out if Jordan had a will, Moen said. His remains will be laid to rest with his mother and father at a later date, she added.

Approximately 15 volunteers from the organizations comprising the Barkley Sound Working Group started building 20-foot by 20-foot chinook fry net pens at the former Alberni Plywood site. Once completed, the pen will be placed on the Canal Beach

pier, which had been scheduled to be moved. “It’s a pilot test. We’ll feed them for two or three weeks before releasing them,” said group member Bob Cole. In May, the group plans to fill the pen with 10,000 fry from Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery, then they will be released into the Alberni Inlet in June, Cole said. Approximately four per cent, or 400 fish, are expected to return in four years. The group hopes to eventually release 100,000 fry, with 4,000 return, he added.

If the project is successful, the group hopes to grow out the project and place pens at other sites including Shoemaker Bay, Scout Camp, and China Creek Marina. “Id like to see our numbers go up to 100,000 to 300,000,” Cole said. The goal of the project is to increase the chinook fry survival rate in the Inlet. “Robertson Creek used to produce 10 million (fry) now it’s down to six million,” Cole said. “We have to get that survival rate up.” The project is underwritten with

Ultimate Fishing Town funds and from a special use fund created by fishermen. One of those projects was a shared beach seine, the fish from which were sold and with the proceeds going towards the project, Hupacasath Chief Councillor Steve Tatoosh said. “We’ve been wanting to do this kind of thing for some time and this was an opportunity to do that,” Tatoosh said. Chinook fishing has been a part of Tatoosh’s life for as long as he can remember, and times are changing, he said.

Pols can only blame themselves This May 14, British Columbians will once again have the opportunity to determine the future path our province will take. But with voting numbers having declined steadily for decades, clearly many among us are asking ourselves, what’s the point? One can hardly blame them. Our political parties seem more preoccupied with taking cheap shots at each other than with the serious business of governance. The provincial legislature is no longer a place for ideas to be debated, for legislation to be vetted and weighed, for compromise and consensus to be reached. Instead it is a three-ring circus of petty namecalling, jeers and barbs. Such behaviour shows a lack of respect for the good people of this province for whom the Members of the Legislative Assembly were elected to represent. What’s worse, when nearly all votes in the legislature fall along party lines, the outcome is predetermined. So why vote at all? Certainly that’s the conclusion many British Colombians have come to, as only 50 per cent - a record low - bothered to cast their ballots in the 2009 provincial election. Jurisdictions around the world have tried different methods to bolster voter turnout. Some countries, such as New Zealand, have adopted a proportional representative voting system called single-transferable voting. You might recall it, as a majority of British Columbians voted in favour of it in 2005. Other jurisdictions, such as Australia, have opted to make voting mandatory, with failure to do so resulting in a fine. However, changing the manner in which we vote in an effort to increase voter turnout misses the point. B.C. voters are disenfranchised because the hyper-partisan political atmosphere in Victoria disgusts them. So come May 14 when we yet another dismal voter turnout, the politicians will only have themselves to blame. – The South Delta Leader

Liberal plan to extend B.C.’s electricity grid and use that to develop further independent power. This sounds to me like political positioning rather than economic analysis. An anti-Site C independent candidate has significant support in Peace River North, creating a three-way struggle for a key B.C. Conservative target. The B.C. Conservative platform also totals up the billions in long-term electricity contracts with private power producers and suggests the price for this clean energy has been set too high. This is another echo of the NDP’s vague position. So if the B.C. Conservatives are gung-ho on oil and gas and think the carbon tax is a mistake, do they think there should be any effort to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions? Continued/ A9

Two sides of city council To the Editor, There seems to be a case of split personalities when it comes to sustainability and development in our local municipal governments. On the one hand, the City of Port Alberni has reduced its operational GHG

emissions by 20 per cent since 2007 and has proposes to get to 70 per cent by 2020. This is excellent progress, far better than any of the paper promises by senior government. Local politicians were also praised recently for advocating to protect community watersheds from detrimental forest practices. But here comes the other side of the coin: first, ostensibly to reduce community CO2 emissions, city councillors oddly agreed to put the Roger Creek road crossing and the waterfront industrial road priorities before expansion of bike and walking paths and the district energy project; second, ACRD directors and the Port Authority continue working full tilt to build a new $100 million highway and ring road that would allow hundreds more trucks a day to service the Port, blasting through two local watersheds, while the far more sustainable railway is ignored. There seems to be a disconnect in past values and recent actions here. Local politicians have great

responsibility for building infrastructure and setting in motion policy that lasts decades, even generations. I sincerely hope they take that into consideration with every decision they make. Chris Alemany, Port Alberni

Foreign workers move a mistake To the Editor, The silver-tongued head of RBC finally got around to apologizing for the foreign workers controversy swirling around his bank. No, Gord Nixon did not have an epiphany on the road to Ottawa and suddenly become a born-again believer in his Canadian workers. He is in damage control mode. He made a strategic decision to diffuse the current (and he hopes short-term) uproar to protect his company’s bottom line. Corporations have been intentionally abusing the foreign workers program and Harper’s government was happy to assist them until the issue exploded into a political liability. Many Canadian are outraged by the

rapidly expanding use of low cost foreign workers. Instead of allowing companies to pay foreign workers 15% less than the going rate, Harper’s government should make the companies pay a 15% surtax based on their foreigner workers’ wages. There’s nothing like money to focus the minds of upper management. The surtax could then be used for Canadian job training programs. Mister Harper should be enticing (or forcing) Canadian corporations to actively participate in apprenticeship and technical training programs. Canadian workers spend their money in our country; foreign workers send a large portion home. Profit-driven corporations are currently enhancing the technological skill sets of workers from counties that are Canada’s global competitors. That doesn’t seem very clever. It is amazing how technology has impacted the way in which we communicate. A cell phone or e-mail might have been science fiction just a few decades ago. Yet here we are today with instant opportunities to chat to people all over the world. It is truly a wonderful tool but some of us have become so busy that it is easier to text or reply saying “leave your number and I’ll call back. You know you are being placed on a priority list and perhaps you will receive a reply and perhaps not. No person was as busy as Jesus Christ. When the lady touched his garment, did he screen her out? When a blind man needed healing, did he put him on priority list? We don’t have to worry if we are out of cell phone range to speak to God. The bible tells us clearly “then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. The number to call is J-E-S-U-S. You won’t be placed on a priority list. He’s there anytime, anywhere and for anyone... all we need to do is to make the call.

he first principal at the new Alberni District Secondary School is bringing closure to one phase of his life and ushering in another. Mike Ruttan is retiring at the end of this school year after six years as principal at Alberni District Secondary School. The move brings an end to the threedecade teaching career for the man who a past grad valedictorian said “knows how to rock a moustache.” Ruttan is the youngest of his two sisters and one brother, all of whom were born and raised in the Albenri Valley. Known for his pragmatic wisdom, the married father of two said he hasn’t been the butt of jokes about being the baby of the family. “They asked me a lot of questions when we were younger, so I was a bit of an old soul,” he said. Ruttan attended Gill Elementary School, AW Neill Junior Secondary School and ADSS before graduating in 1969. The principals of the day were men from the old school and stand out today for spurious reasons. “They were dictatorial, intimidating, and not interested in listening to anyone, students in particular,” Ruttan said. “They came from that marine core drill sergeant mold.” Ruttan’s favourite subjects were geography and economics and he counts Winston Joseph among his favourite teachers. “He valued discussion and debate and he recognized that there were different types of intelligence and worked to draw it out.’ Ruttan wanted to be a doctor or lawyer after graduating because he liked working with people, and was interested

heard stories about how great a car it was and how [dad] had to get rid of it because of me,” Koszegi said. “I was the fifth child and it didn’t have enough seats.” Five years after his father’s passing, Koszegi is still searching for that car. Most car enthusiasts know the difficulties of tracking down a classic car, particularly when you are looking for a specific make, model and year. Add a specific VIN number into the mix and you have yourself a needle in a haystack. “Maybe it’s in a collection somewhere, and I just get to see it and take a picture – or maybe it’s neglected in a barn, maybe it’s gone, but I thought I should look for it,” he said.

Vehicle last traced to Alberta From/ A11 to a phone call his family had received when he was young from a woman who had purchased the car. But even after

an ICBC search, searching shipping ports and European specialty shops, Mercedes Benz clubs, amongst other means, the trail goes cold.

The woman who had called from Alberta sold the vehicle in the 90s to a third owner, also in Alberta, but there are no records of it being insured past

the year 2000. “My guess was that it perhaps finished being used around 1999-2000 in Edmonton and got parked and is sitting somewhere,”

Koszegi said. “I don’t know what else to do anymore.” He added that the car would not be of high value, which might make it more difficult

to find. “If it was perfect it might be worth maybe ten grand and if it’s wrecked - $500.” However, what makes Bela’s Mercedes

different is the three litre high performance six cylinder engine he had custom installed, instead of the standard V-8. Back in 1968, Port Alberni was home to a Mercedes Benz dealership for a brief period, and Bela wanted that particular engine as it was similar to that of the famous Gullwing, a Mercedes racing car. “It was a special order car and it took eight months to build, and cost $8,000,” Koszegi said. Over the years, Koszegi has owned about 200 cars and tinkered with interesting projects, including a 1954 Porsche bought from his high school teacher. But finding and possibly restoring the maroon Mercedes would top the list, he says. “I’ve got three kids now and it would be so awesome,” he said. “I’d have it for a keepsake and take my kids cruising in it.” Anyone with information on the car can contact Dave Koszegi at 250-7209125 or by email dekoszegi@shaw.ca

Ruttan switched gears, becoming the district First Nations tutor, working at the school board office. He was vice principal of EJ Dunn before moving to ADSS as a vice principal 10 years ago, then as principal six years ago. There have been some changes in his years as an educator. Students map out their own futures now and work with staff rather than the other way around, Ruttan said.

lberni District Secondary School wrestler Jordon Bodnar is the first female to win five consecutive BC high school wrestling titles. But with high school graduation around the corner Bodnar declined a tryout out for Team Canada, choosing to concentrate on academics instead, her coach James Messenger said. Bodnar is competitive and would likely have medalled at the nationals, Messenger said. “However,

she is not sure about competing in wrestling beyond high school. She decided to spend the time to focus on school and other things,” he said. “We hope to have her involved as a coach next season.” Bodnar won her fifth straight title, this one in the 43-kilogram division, in February at the BC High School Championships, which were held in Duncan. What made Bodnar’s feat more notable is that she didn’t have so much as one point scored against her during the tourney, something akin to a hockey shutout. “It was one of the most incredible

feelings I have ever had,” Bodnar said. “It was pretty cool.” The accomplishment capped off not just a high school career, but a teen life spent in wrestling. Bodnar has been a fixture in the Port Alberni wrestling scene since she was in Grade 6. “My stepfather Russell is a coach and he used to take me to wrestling practices when I was a kid. I was always around it and when I got older I wanted to wrestle,” Jordon said. Bodnar isn’t just a wrestler, she’s tried other sports as well. She’s been a forward in soccer, a softball catcher and competed

as a long distance runner in track and field. But wrestling remained her first love. Bodnar is another in an assembly line of strong female wrestlers that Port Alberni has produced, like Brianne Charles, Savannah Toth and Ashley Cross. The wrestling season is longer than that of other sports, giving team members plenty of time to bond. “The whole team is like a family,” said Bodnar. With the end of Grade 12 near, Bodnar has been preparing for what comes next after high school. Continued/ A19

A former Port Alberni resident who was part of drama groups at ADSS and the Capitol Theatre has auditioned for a Vancouver reality show about hipsters. Myles Schroeder, 24, created and edited a video piece he sent in to producers of the reality show ‘The Real Hipsters of Vancouver’. “I thought it would be neat to be part of a reality show so I too a chance,” the now

Vancouverite said. “I’ve always been a bit of a risk taker anyway.” The audition was in March and shooting will take place this summer. The hipster subculture is made up of men and women from age 20- 30 who value independent thinking, counterculture, and an appreciation of art and indie-rock. The Huggington Post describes Schroeder’s video as “...a skinny jeanswearing comic book aficionado who

introduces himself with the most surreal version of T-Pain’s “Apple Bottom Jeans” you’ll ever hear.” He grew up in Port Alberni and went to ADSS, where he graduated from in 2006. He was part of ADSS drama, as well as a participant in Capitol Theatre productions. In his audition video, Schroeder re-wrote a song by the group Low and did a self interview about my interests, which include comics, film and travel. He even listed his

pet-peeve, which he describes as “Trying to get around Vancouver is like trying to walk though a mob of uncoordinated molasses.” T he Shaw Cable employee spend his days working and weekends sleeping, clubbing, and enjoying Vancouver’s beaches.
