The rain didn’t slow the action when all the teams from the Boundary Youth Soccer Association came to Midway for their season opening games on Sunday. While parents and grandparents took shelter under umbrellas, the kids had a great time. BYSA president Jeff Olsen said the club extends from Rock Creek to Christina Lake. In keeping with that regional focus, league teams are not allowed to name themselves after their geography. “If we can’t support each other through the soccer association across the Boundary here, when it comes to the bigger issues, how do you ever get together and discuss those ideas, right?” asked Olsen. The league is still accepting registrations – check out their website at boundaryyouthsoccer.com for more information. Games are held on Sundays starting at 9 a.m. The association tries to get the last game started by 11 a.m. to allow the action to be wrapped up before the heat gets too intense – not a problem last weekend.

B&E suspects arrested

Two suspects arrested by Penticton police on a vehicle damage report were also found to have stolen property from Greenwood and Christian Valley break-ins in their possession. Two thefts occurred on Sunday, March 31, explained Cpl. Kevin Christensen of the Midway detachment of Boundary Regional RCMP. One of the break-and-enters (B&Es) occurred at a residence in Greenwood and the second was on Christian Valley Road. In both reports to police, witnesses reported seeing a blue van that was possibly involved, parked in the area. Midway RCMP made patrols but were unable to locate the blue van. They then sent out infor-

mation to surrounding detachments regarding the B&Es and possible suspect blue van. According to Christensen, on Wednesday, April 3 Penticton RCMP were summoned to a report of a blue van that had struck a parked car in Penticton. Witnesses reported seeing a male and female run from the accident scene. Police were able to track down and arrest the two suspects. It was determined that the van had been stolen from the Boys and Girls Club in Penticton. The suspects were also found in possession of stolen property from the Greenwood and Christian Valley break and enters. Christensen said that charges are forthcoming.

ing the summer on the patio. The café is currently open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and they are planning to extend the hours to 8 p.m. soon. The Gold Dust Motel offers four units (now being renovated) and RV sites. The units offer air conditioning and satellite TV. After the renovations are complete Samra plans to rent them out on a monthly basis. The gas station is open Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. They sell both diesel and gas and are planning to start selling propane in the next month. In addition to offering all the normal merchandise of a convenience store like chips, pop, coffee the gas station also sells fireworks, ice cream cones, magazines, etc. The station serves as a Greyhound stop for both freight and passengers. The operation currently employs seven people inlcuding Samra. Samra came to Rock Creek from Salmo, where the family ran a Subway franchise. “We always passed through Rock Creek travelling from Salmo to visit family in Vancouver and I always liked the spot so when it came up for sale we said, ‘Let’s do something with it.’” The family still owns the Subway in Salmo and Samra explains that all of the Manjit Samra, owner of Rock Creek Husky, businesses are famis always ready with a smile.

Since taking over the three businesses at the junction of Hwy 3 and 33 in Rock Creek in November 2011, Manjit Samra has brought some nice changes to town. The gas station has a corporate logo on the sign – the station is now known as the Rock Creek Husky. Samra also installed a modern canopy for the new computerized gas pumps. The Gold Pan Café was reopened this year and now features seasonal meals that can be enjoyed in either the airconditioned restaurant or outside dur-

ily owned. “I just kind of run them,” he laughed. Samra came to Canada from India in 1997. “I was 19 years old when I came here and worked on the coast most of my life, in Abbottsford. In 2000 we bought a small restaurant in Abbotsford – Taco Time. We ran that for four years. Then we wanted to move to a small town so we found something in Salmo.” He said that they plan to work on the park that sits on the banks of Rock Creek behind the gas station and café. They plan to put in more swings. “That will be our next priority,” Samra said. “We have a nice creek at the back, you can sit down and have a little lunch from the restaurant.” When the Times suggested the site could become a regular stopping off place to refuel and refresh for travelling families, a stop that could serve as a family tradition for the next 20 years, he insisted that we write that up as 40 years. “That way I will be around to 60 or 65,” he said with a smile. Speaking of further plans they have to improve the business, Samra said, “We have more things in our head – just waiting for the time. Probably over the next winter or next year. Piece by piece it will come together.” He is married with two young children – a 7½-year-old daughter who is in Grade 2 and a 3½-year-old son. The family currently makes their home in Osoyoos. Rock Creek Husky provides latenight hours for the benefit of their customers. But he insists the business is nothing new. “It’s been here for 30 years – it’s not something that we built out of the blue, it was always there. The Gold Pan is famous for generation after generation. People who used to come in as kids are now bringing their kids in – it is a wellknown establishment.” “It is a new station though and we want everybody’s support. The new facility is a Husky station so people can have their BCA points and all this fun stuff, which gives them discounts on insurance.”

A grass fire that got away last week in Anaconda.

Fire draws reminder Shortly after noon on Wednesday, April 3, Greenwood Fire Department was called to a grass fire on property just south of Anaconda. A property owner had been burning off a large field and a large amount of smoke was generated by the burn. Deputy Fire Chief Chris Fieber reported that no hose or water was deployed from the truck though the three firefighters who responded did use shovels to help contain the fire along the fence between the

field and trailer court on 1st Street. Fieber said the property owner plus two additional workers were watching the fire and they had a water tank mounted on a quad on site. He added that while Boundary Creek formed a natural firebreak, they did have to make sure the fire didn’t spread into trees along the creek. He reminded property owners to be careful when burning and that notifying the fire department that a burn is taking place is always a good idea.

Public works on agenda

Special meeting provides “view of the village”

Midway council’s April 2 meeting was unusual for the number of agenda items that had come forward from a special public meeting held on March 21. That special meeting saw public works foreman John Boltz meeting with council for a review of many files, including equipment, the arena, Riverfront Park, emergency response planning, sewer and water certifications, the landfill, works yard, risk management, streets, potholes in front of Mile Zero Motel, sewers, buildings, parks, cemetery, community garden, tools and the village website. The meeting gave council an opportunity to more fully understand a view of the village through the eyes of the works foreman and administrator. *** Council approved the expenditure of $8,844 (the village paying 50 per cent or $4,422) for a consultant’s general building energy assessment to be done on the community hall, medical clinic, municipal building/fire hall, main museum and seniors centre. It is hoped the report will help the village identify and prioritize building retrofit opportunities. *** Council has again rented the museum bunkhouse to Greenpeaks Resource Management. This time it is for the last two weeks of April, after which the tree planting crew will move to the Riverfront Park and the arena again.

MIDWAY LIBRARY MIDWAY

COUNCIL REPORT

*** Council has responded to an inquiry by former Councillor Martin Fromme suggesting the municipal budget development process be more open. “It is the intent of the charter that the public have an opportunity to provide genuine input into the final composition of the budget,” said Fromme in a letter to council. “Although the final decision is to be made by council, nevertheless council is expected to give the public opportunities to express ideas and concerns to council to which council should give consideration before finalizing the budget.” Kappes told Fromme that council had already considered the issue, which Fromme had originally raised at the March 19 regular meeting. Council has decided that after a list of budgeting possibilities and projects is determined, staff will advertise information to the residents via newsletter and a public input session will be held to help with identifying possible needs. After the public input session council will prioritize and finalize budget planning, following which they will present the budget at a public meeting as has been done in the past. *** Administrator Penny Feist

reported that the infrastructure grant that council had applied for to fund improvements to the community hall had been turned down. *** Feist reported data on rental income from Riverfront Park for the past five years. In 2008 there were 676 campers, in 2009 - 1,041, 2010 – 905, 2011 - 1,256 and in 2012 there were 1,121. Councillor Gary Schierbeck suggested that council should give consideration to making improvements and upgrades to the campground based on the data. Feist said that, excluding income from tree planting crews using the campground, over the past five years the campground has brought in $35,117. *** During question period Fromme asked council what level of support they were willing to give to a Communities in Bloom committee. Kappes said they would have to look at past correspondence for cost information before responding. *** Kappes told Fromme that staff is preparing an options report for projects at the cemetery this year. According to the March 21 minutes they are considering installing planters and are looking at alternatives for watering such as installing a tank and gravity feed drip system. Staff are also checking with the City of Grand Forks for xeriscaping ideas.

Run aims to raise $12,000 MIDWAY PUBLIC LIBRARY Submitted

Once again the Midway Public Library is planning the JLB Memorial Kettle River Run on July 20, 2013; this will be our fourth annual run to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation of the Southern Interior. Last year we raised approximately $10,000 for patient care; this year we hope to meet our target of $12,000. Hope for the people that journey the lonely road through cancer costs money. We can help put that burden behind them. If you are a survivor, or have known anyone with cancer, you know how hard the journey is! But we can help by taking one step at a time, walk or run. Make this a family affair; take part in the Kettle River Days festivities as well come and join the run for cancer care. If you are a serious runner we will time your run, if you just want to have fun then compete for the spirit award. We will judge the family or group that participates in fun, e.g. crazy glasses, hats, shoes. As well recognition is given for the largest family group, largest professional group, the fastest 5k, 10k, 21k, the youngest (walking), the oldest, most pledges, etc. There is registration on Friday evening and a spaghetti dinner for the participants (other family members can pay a donation) and awards and

beef on a bun Saturday afternoon. Our website is www.midwaylibrary.bc.ca for registration and pledge forms. There is a volunteer form as well if you know someone who would like to volunteer for this event.

Village benefits Thumbs up to Midway Village Council for changes they’ve made to their budget planning process. Former Councillor Martin Fromme recently pushed the question, asking council to review their procedure, which in the past has been done outside the public eye to some extent. In previous years the budget would be developed by council, given three readings and then taken to a public meeting for presentation to the public. Immediately following the public meeting council would give final adoption to the budget bylaw. While the Community Charter and the Local Government Act set out the basic requirements of how things get done, there is enough latitude that differences in “style” emerge from one local government to the next. For example, Greenwood’s budget process is more open and involves several public meetings. Once City Council has a budget ready for adoption it again comes before the public, this time at a regular council meeting where it is adopted. “The intent of the Community Charter is that the public has an opportunity to provide genuine input into the final composition of the budget,” Fromme said in a letter to council. “Although the final decision rests with Council, they are expected to give the public opportunities to express ideas and concerns to council to which Council should give consideration before finalizing the budget,” he added. Midway council has agreed to revise their process. This year, after they have drawn up a list of possible projects, staff will publish it to the residents and a public input session will be scheduled. Following that meeting council will finish prioritizing and planning the budget, which will then come before residents in a public meeting as in past years. Council, and the village as a whole, stands to benefit from this expanded opportunity given the taxpayers to provide input on the annual budget.

APRIL 13 & 14, 2013

Join in campaign for arts society Editor, The Times:

My name is Corlyn Cierman and I am hoping to develop an arts centre in the old schoolhouse beside the Midway medical clinic. I had my first meeting with the Midway Village Council on March 4, 2013. They agreed in principal to the idea and I was given my work orders. After an inspection by Rock Creek Contractor Dale Pownall on March 20, he said the building was sound – from the attic to the foundation – though he recommended more support for the floor. His report on needed improvements

to bring the old school up to present-day safety building codes is being prepared, including cost estimates. He said the floor could be sanded and a new restroom added. The windows and light is very good for an art gallery purpose. In other words – everything is there! I have placed a survey in the communities of the West Boundary. Please fill one out to provide us with some understanding of what the residents would like to see. But do remember that this art centre will contribute greatly to the goodwill of the Village of Midway and its visitors. Surveys can be dropped off at Rags, Relics and Rutabagas in Rock Creek, Midway Village Office or at Tomorrow’s

Treasures in Greenwood. I am planning to address Greenwood Council this month. A video on YouTube is available – go to YouTube.ca and look for Corlyn Cierman. This was an on-the-spot interview produced by Les Johnson from Grand Forks. All established art groups are invited to participate as their own – staying in their known comfort zones. So the building is good, but we need to form a society to move forward towards a government grant stage. Please join us. For more information call me at 250-445-6335. Corlyn Cierman, Greenwood

Full inquiry on BC Rail sale needed Editor, The Times: “Ethnic-gate” was terrible. “BC Railgate” is worse. In 2012, the BC Liberals admitted that they possessed documents to pay $6 million legal bills for Dave Basi and Bobby Virk. We still don’t know what happened that led to the $6 million in legal fees for Basi and Virk.

Why was the legislature raided? What happened when BC Rail was sold to CN? Why does Christy Clark not produce the documents regarding this $6 million payout? We get one public lie after another. Christy Clark is involved with her brother Bruce Clark (found by RCMP to be involved in David Basi files), with Erik Bornmann, a star witness in the Basi-Virk trial, Patrick Kinsella, a Gordon Campbell backer, with ex-husband Mark Marissen, who did work with the

bidding company, and Gordon Campbell when he was premier while he was deputy premier. All were involved in the sale of BC Rail. We need a full public inquiry on the process on the sale of BC Rail, Christy Clark’s involvement in it, and the $6 million payout for Basi-Virk. The public has waited 10 years for these answers. The public owned BC Rail. It is our right to know what happened. Gladys Brown, Midway

Maybe Cyprus isn’t so bad after all Editor, The Times: When news broke that the government of Cyprus was seizing 10 per cent of the peoples’ savings, the people objected and stated that no other government would think of doing such a thing. I wonder if they ever heard of Cana-

da where the government and their tax mob seizes larger portions of a worker’s income before we even receive it and if we have anything left and put in the bank, they not only seize 10 per cent, but steal the whole amount and want anything else you might have stashed away, as they have done to me on various occasions. I am a senior, nearly 80 years old. I was born in Canada, lived here all my life and have worked in the logging and lumber industry for nearly 50 years. I never did approve of being penalized for working by this extortion called tax. When the kids were younger, I put money in their name in a trust account and as the savings grew this mob of tax thieves garnisheed my wages for over $1,500 for not declaring this as income. After I retired, and having nearly $20,000 taken off my income, they sent

me a bill wanting more money. When I refused, they seized my bank account. They have continued to seize my bank account as well as my pension cheque and had ordered the bank not to cash my cheques anymore. The tax mob has stolen most of my life savings. I now send in a tax form clearly stating my opinion of what I think of this lowdown mob of thieves. That is the only satisfaction I get from working and being robbed for my efforts. After government and their tax mob have all your money, they put a ransom on our homes and if you can’t afford to pay up they seize your home and put you out on the street. I am sure there are others in similar situations. Maybe Cyprus is not so bad after all! Welcome to Canada, land of the FREE. Vern Rexin, Rock Creek

Shoot draws 55 archers The Kettle Wildlife Association Archery Club hosted a two-day 3-D shoot last weekend that, despite the wet weather, attracted 55 paid shooters. According to Rebecca Lindquist the majority of them were here for both days. There were two courses, with 20 targets each. Grand Forks resident Gary Onions was appreciative of the work done by the organizers. “It’s a good course – they do a good job here,” he said. “We’ll come here every year to shoot.” The next events for Rock Creek’s club will be when the Traditional Bow Hunters of British Columbia come for a shoot on the May long weekend and another 3-D shoot at the beginning of June. Information is available at 250-446-2646. There is a one-day 3-D shoot on Saturday near the Cascade border sponsored by the Grand Forks Archery Club. For more information call 250-442-8488 or 250-447-2627.

Introducing

Alex McQueen

After Alex McQueen graduates from BCSS in June she is looking forward to a summer of work in the Okanagan where she can, “increase my knowledge through work experience and outline how the real world works.” She plans to save her money for the next year and then attend Selkirk College to become an esthetician – a job that would help pay her way through college or university later. She is keen on getting into counseling or social services, but is also considering taking training as an x-ray technician. She plans to explore her options over the summer, perhaps getting into some actual work settings to see what they are like. Alex is interested in either addictions or trauma counseling. “I am a calm person,” she says. “I have always had random people come up and feel they

Introducing

Kena Manson

BCSS grad Kena Manson already has a summer job lined up – in fact she’s had a summer job for the past four years – looking after horses at some of the most prestigious heavy horse shows on the continent. She’s competed in the Calgary Stampede four years now, placing 7th out of 25 in this world-class competition. At the PNE in Vancouver she placed first in all her classes. But she hasn’t forgotten her roots – she’s returned home each fall to help with the horse events at the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair. Horses are the family business – they breed Percherons at their Kettle Valley ranch. All of this brings her to her summer

(L-R) GFSS Grade 8 student Brent Plotnikoff with his grandfather Bryan Schneider and Gary Onions as they prepare to head out on the 3-D archery course at the KWA range on Sunday morning.

Students prepare for graduation could talk to me. But along around Grade 10, I started noticing that when bad situations come up that most people start freaking out about, I just kind of stay calm – so I started thinking about different kinds of counseling that are out there. “I like to talk. I am not shy and I am really confident in stressful situations.” Her resumé lists two current jobs – one at McDonald’s where she does just about every job you see being done at a fast food restaurant (janitorial, serving food, cashier, stocking, etc.); and her position at Pourboys Mechanical where her list of duties includes just about everything that you don’t see because it all happens behind the scenes (janitorial, sorting paperwork, painting, etc.).

Her family moved from Calgary to Rock Creek when she was nine years old and they’ve been in Midway for the past four years. “I like small towns way better. You get to know everybody and there is not 300 people in your grad class,” she laughs. Alex has been an active member of BCSS Spirit Club since Grade 10 and was on student council in Grades 8 through 10. Her volunteer activities have involved four years of service at the Rock Creek fair and five years with the youth group in Midway. Her hobbies include hiking and writing poetry. “I have a journal that I keep, I love writing I think that is going to be a part-time thing throughout my life.”

job. Along with her twin sister Sean, Kena will be working at the Fort Steele Heritage Town near Cranbrook in the livestock department. This fall she plans to attend the sixmonth culinary school course at the College of the Rockies. Culinary school came at the suggestion of her mother who recognized a natural talent in her daughter. “She saw I liked to cook and to experiment with foods,” recalls Kena. She said she chose the College of the Rockies because she knows people in the area and there is more opportunity there for her. Kena has earned her way over the

past four years and, proving herself to be a hard worker, the job offer at Fort Steele came her way. The fellow who does the hiring for Fort Steele has seen her handle horses on the show circuit. After she finishes her Culinary Arts course she’s not sure where her future will take her. But she explains that her longterm goal is, “to have a successful and fulfilling career by experiencing different opportunities that will guide me in finding the right career for me.” While no one can be certain what his or her future will bring – perhaps Kena might be best suited for a job on the chuckwagon.

Partnership fund funds five projects Money is flowing from the Midway Partnership Fund (MPF) to five projects in the community this year. The MPF committee met last Saturday afternoon to consider the applications received for funding. It reviewed last year’s single project proposed by the Midway’s Trail Society. The project was found to have been completed and funds will be dispersed to pay for the signage to promote the trails around the village. The committee approved funds for all five projects for which completed appli-

cations were received by the application deadline: • The Midway Public Library has applied for funding to complete a room for public meetings in the basement of the Library. • The John Boltz memorial run’s request for funds to provide two more picnic tables for the community. • Two requests for funds to place publicly available defibrillators in the community were granted. One came from the West Boundary Senior Housing Society

Trades program offered Grand Forks Secondary School, in collaboration with Boundary Central Secondary, will be offering a Trades/Work Readiness program opportunity next year through Selkirk College. According to a communication sent to parents by BCSS principal Louise Bayles to parents last week the program includes courses in Fall Protection, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Forklift Operator, Occupational First Aid Level 1, Transportation Endorsement and H2S Alive (a one-day certification on hydrogen sulphide required for working in the field in the oil industry). Separate courses will also be offered as separate certificates throughout the year in WHMIS, FOODSAFE

and First Aid. The Pathways program is held on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the fall session and students complete the program with two days of job training/experience. The course fee will be $100 but students will receive approximately $1,000 worth of certifications that will prove invaluable for future resumes and possible employment. This course, offered outside the regular timetable, upon full completion will also be worth four credits towards graduation. Grade 12 students will receive priority for program seats and there is an enrollment limit so Bayles suggested students to get their students names in as soon as possible.

for a defibrillator to be located in Parkview Manor and the other will be located in the arena, as requested by the Midway Minor Hockey Association. • The museum’s request for funding towards the repair of the caboose was approved. • The curling club’s request for funding towards the upgrades to the curling club was also approved. This year over $7,000 has been pledged to these community projects. “The committee is happy that these groups have ap-

plied for help and that we are able to assist them,” said committee member John Greaves. “We hope they are all able to complete their projects by the deadline and thereby receive the funding they have applied for.” The meeting was directed by Interim Chair John Fair and attended by committee members Kim Lindseth, John Greaves, and Elaine Fromme. Tom Sheldon, who is considering becoming a member, also attended the meeting.

The dirt on organic produce What do you think of when you hear the term health care? If you MIDWAY are like most people you think of hospitals and clinics where doctors, nurses and other health care providers treat people who are sick. Health care is not just about treating the sick its about promoting and supporting those things that keep us well. For many years there has been an ‘individual lifestyle choices’ approach to health promotion. We have all heard the messages about eating healthy and getting regular exercise, yet changes don’t happen easily. It’s time we took a closer look at how truly difficult it can be to do these seemingly simple things. For example, being able to make the choice to eat healthy depends on knowing what healthy eating is, the availability of healthy food where one lives, having enough money to purchase healthy foods, and

the ability and time to prepare healthy meals. When all these factors are taken into account the modest directive to ‘eat healthy’ becomes quite complex! What if I live in a community where fresh produce is not always available or affordable? What if I am a single parent working two jobs and I depend on processed convenience foods to feed my family? We can dramatically improve the health of our population if we can affect the social and economic conditions in which we live. Interior Health has recently launched the Healthy Communities Initiative a partnership project between Interior Health and local governments that aims to improve the health of residents by addressing the social determinants of health. – Author: Kerri Wall is a Community Health Facilitator with Interior Health

Introducing

Megan Pedersen We ran this article two weeks ago, but unfortunately misspelled Megan’s name. These articles are also meant to serve as a keepsake for the students and that would not have been possible with that glaring error. We reprint it now because it’s the right thing to do. When Megan Pedersen arrived at BCSS as a Grade 8 student, little did she suspect the adventure that was before her. Over the next five years, she seized every opportunity that came her way to fully experience her time in high school. “I didn’t expect to ever leave this school,” she explains. “I thought I’d just go from Grade 8 to Grade 12 in this school. I never would have guessed that just the next year I would go to Pen High and the year after that I would go to Oliver and the year after that I would be in Japan. It was a hectic five years.” She’s taken classes through home schooling as well as classes online. She’s even taken classes in Japanese. She hopes to be accepted at SFU this fall, the only school in B.C. that offers a Bachelor of Science in Behavioural Neuroscience. Her ultimate goal is to attend medical school specializing in anesthesiology. Megan said she’d gotten interested in psychology as a Rotary Exchange Student in Japan during Grade 11. She ad-

mits that she’d slacked off on studying the language before her trip so when she first arrived there she had to fall back on body language and speech inflection. It was comparable to an immersion course in behavioral psychology. “In Japanese you speak very monotone – you never do highs and lows like you do in English. So when I first started learning Japanese I would be talking to them and they would look at me like – are you mad at me?” In the end she hired three tutors to cram Japanese into her head for a week, and her advice for anyone else who is going on an exchange is to study the language before going. Megan comes from an artistic family. Her granddad has an art gallery in Oliver and her father and cousins are artists. “I kind of got raised around art so I got interested in it. I do everything from realism to painting to digital, online and such. I really enjoy art.” Her artistic talent was recognized when she took 1st place in the Oliver Annual Art Show in the Emerging Artist Under 19 category. She also lists writing as one of her favorite hobbies. “I love writing – from poetry to essays to prose of any sort. “

She’s been active in various capacities at every school she’s attended. In Grade 10 she was part of the girl’s field hockey team from South Okanagan that went to the provincials. She’s volunteered for the Yearbook Club, served on Student Council president in Grades 8 and 9, and is involved with BCSS Spirit Club this year when she can find time. She’s got a full load of courses this year though, including several online courses, to make up for those she missed while in Japan. Megan is planning to work over the summer. She’s already got an impressive resume. In fact, she gave up her job at Buy-Low in Osoyoos so she could focus on her classes during her final year of high school. If she is accepted at SFU for the fall term she plans to move there right away so she can secure an on-campus job. If she doesn’t get into SFU this fall she plans to take a year off and move to Penticton with some close friends and try again after a year. Megan has gained a wealth of experience during her high school years, an experience that will benefit herself, her community and her future employers for years to come.

What are “healthy” aquatic ecosystems?

things (including people) In the results of the surinteracting with each vey last fall we learned from other and their physical watershed residents that environment (soil, water, healthy rivers and aquatic climate) as a system. It mean when we say ‘healthy’ is a scientific concept that aquatic ecosystems? can be applied to scales as Survey respondents had great as the envelope of life a lot to say about aquatic around the earth’s surface ecosystems, for instance stating that we should GRAHAM WATT (the biosphere) to areas as small as a single wetland “maintain natural environand its surrounding upments - for fish, wildlife, land. vegetation” and preserve An aquatic ecosystem is simply an eco“quality for all living organisms.” The term ‘health’ or ‘healthy’ appeared over 90 times system that is associated with water bodies in survey results, and was often associated (rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, springs). with habitat, ecosystems, or water quality. communities of plants and animals after disturbances like fires and floods, instead of weedy or non-native species. Of course ecosystems are dynamic and also evolve in response to changes in climate, disturbances, or management. Society also expects ecosystems and watersheds to provide us with certain ‘services’ and values: clean, safe water, good recreational opportunities, food and economically valuable materials, and aesthetically pleasing views and characteristics. We alter ecosystems to provide more of these services, often without due consideration for biodiversity or other people. Changing an ecosystem to meet our preferences, such as landscaping to the shore-

line or allowing heavy grazing, can seriously impact wildlife and fish habitat as well as downstream water users. Do you have more to say about healthy ecosystems or your vision for the Kettle River watershed? Go to http://kettleriver. ca/what-we-heard and complete the short follow-up survey by April 22. Contact Graham Watt (plan@kettleriver.ca) about this or any other watershed questions. Graham Watt is project co-ordinator of the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. Ask Watt watershed questions at plan@kettleriver. ca. Voting open for music awards Submitted

Five music industry judges sifted through hundreds of nominated songs to come up with this year’s shortlist. Now it’s up to the public to choose the winners. KMA president Chad Hansen was thrilled to see the musical diversity in the Artist of the Year category. “We’ve got an opera, two big folk-stomp bands, an electronic producer and a singersongwriter going head-to-head,” he said. “It just goes to show the range of talent we have in the region. Whatever type of music you like, you can find somebody here doing it really well.” Shortlisted artists come from all corners of the Kootenays. The Good Ol’ Goats from Cranbrook show up in the “Best Roots and Blues” and “Artist of the Year” categories, Golden’s WakCutt is on the list for “Best DJ” and the Slocan Valley’s Immune 2 Cobras is hoping for “Best New Artist” and “Best Punk/Rock/Metal.” There’s a huge representation from Nelson artists. KHAOS, the opera written by Don Macdonald, is nominated in three categories. Tofu Stravinsky and James Lamb are both up for “Album of the Year” and Selkirk music student Dylan McPherson is going for “Best New Artist.” To listen to tracks from all the contenders and place your vote go to kootenaymusicawards.com and click “Nominate” on the page banner, then “Vote now.” There’s a play button under each artist’s picture that you can click to listen to their music. When you’ve picked your favourite, register for an account and start voting. The voting period closes on April 30 and the winners will be announced at an award show at Spiritbar in Nelson on May 10.
