A controversial proposed $35-million YMCA facility in Abbotsford has been indefinitely deferred. At Monday evening’s council meeting, Mayor Bruce Banman read a letter from Stephen Butz, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, expressing the organization’s condolences for the loss of the city’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture, Mark Taylor. The YMCA project had long been championed by Taylor, who died in a skiing accident last month. The letter stated, “in light of current circumstances, we fully recognize the need for flexibility given the capacity issues (the city manager) now faces.” Banman said the YMCA has expressed its “wish to indefinitely withdraw their offer to build a proposed YMCA here in Abbotsford.” The mayor’s announcement and council’s unanimous vote to defer the project, pre-empted a scheduled delegation from businessman Fred Thiessen, who was to speak against a city contribution of $17.5 million to build a YMCA facility here. Banman apologized to Thiessen for making the announcement prior to his presentation, asking whether he still wished to speak. Thiessen questioned if the original memorandum-of-

understanding (MOU) with the YMCA would have to be amended due to the indefinite deferral of the project. Banman replied that the project with the YMCA will not be moving forward at this time. Thiessen said he didn’t want to assume the paperwork would be done. “I’m not happy with that. It’s ambiguous. It allows for a change of heart.” Banman urged Thiessen to
take the council’s decision at face value. “Allow us to discuss this with the Y and figure out what becomes of the MOU.” Banman said the YMCA understands it will take considerable time for the city to regroup following the loss of Taylor, and at this time the Y will move on to another project. Thiessen had previously expressed his opposition to the concept at a council meeting in
January, drawing a crowd of about 150 people. The project was then delayed to allow for new city manager George Murray to evaluate the project. The proposal called for a 55,000-square-foot facility to be built on the former MSA Hospital site on McCallum Road, owned by the Fraser Health Authority. The proposed cost of the project was $35 million, with $17.5 million from the city, an $8 million contribution from the YMCA, $8 million in community contributions raised by YMCA, and $1.5 million from the province. The YMCA was to receive a property tax exemption, but would cover the operating costs for the building. The YMCA, in addition to providing a recreation facility and swimming pool, would also offer community outreach and newcomer programs, afterschool programs, gambling prevention, prenatal and parenting classes, English as a second language training, adult learning and computer access. Butz previously told The News that in July 2011 the organization was approached by the city to consider the possibility of developing a local facility. The organization commissioned a market research project and found there was justification for building a YMCA, with a total projected membership of roughly 10,000.

$1 million for milk in schools Funding provided to upgrade nutrition program

The province has committed $1 million to help provide local milk for school children across B.C. Finance Minister Michael de Jong and Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick made the announcement on Monday at Goodway Farms on Townshipline Road in Abbotsford. The new funding allows schools, already participating in the BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program, to have the option to receive milk from local dairy farms. In partnership with the BC Dairy Association, more than 1,400 elementary schools will be offered milk, free of charge, for children in Kindergarten to Grade 2. “These dairy products will reach communities

The BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program provides B.C.grown fresh fruit and vegetable snacks to students in all grades, 13 times per school year. All public and First Nation schools are eligible to apply for the program. Abbotsford’s Lindsay Babineau, executive director of BC Agriculture in the Classroom, said the nutritional program has been a big success since starting in 2005 in 10 pilot schools. “Now, to add milk is just beyond our wildest dreams. It is just so important to bring that opportunity to children to be able to try milk once again.” As of January, 1,341 public schools and 77 First Nations schools were registered for the program.

Local musician and events organizer, Stephen O’Shea has announced his candidacy for the Green Party of BC in the Abbotsford West riding. O’Shea was raised in Abbotsford and graduated from Yale Secondary. He is a founding member of dancepunk/new wave band You Say Party. The band came together in Abbotsford in 2004 composing songs with an emphasis on political themes. The band grew to earn international renown, enabling them to tour extensively on three continents until the untimely death of their drummer, Devon Clifford, in 2010. Currently, O’Shea works as a supportive caregiver for people with developmental disabilities for Bethesda Christian Association in Abbotsford.

Carjacking suspect charged Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A suspect has been charged in relation to a carjacking that took place in Abbotsford in December. Steve Martin Jasper, 30, of Surrey has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, two counts of break and enter, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, robbery, and the use of an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence. Const. Ian MacDonald said the investigation, led by Abbotsford Police in cooperation with other police agencies, also looked into 100 incidents in which Jasper had possible links in other jurisdictions.
As a result, he also faces 10 additional charges in Burnaby, Langley, Vancouver, Maple Ridge, New Westminster and West Vancouver for crimes such as assault with a weapon, break and enter, theft, and two other robberies using a fake gun. The Abbotsford offence took place on Dec. 21 at about 5 p.m., when police were called to a break-in at a home in the 30000 block of Nicholson Road. When officers arrived, the suspect fled in a 2005 Chevy Silverado pickup and struck a police car parked at the end of the driveway. Minutes later, police deployed a spike belt, which deflated one of the truck’s tires. The suspect sped south on
Mt. Lehman Road and, while travelling in the wrong lane, sideswiped a Chevy Cavalier, which ended up in a ditch at Cardinal Avenue. The Silverado was found abandoned at Mt. Lehman Road and Automall Drive. A woman on the scene told officers that a man with a handgun had forced her out of her 2006 Toyota Corolla. A witness who had seen the carjacking followed the stolen Toyota as it headed west along Highway 1, but lost sight of it. The Toyota was later found at a shopping complex in Burnaby. In early January, the Abbotsford Police Department released a composite sketch of the suspect in hopes of gathering more leads.

Is one in five of us really a ‘wingnut?’ have the courtesy or curiosity to land. Otherwise, they came an awfully long way for a simple aerial view of planet Earth. And let’s face it, with the technology they must possess to get here, they certainly wouldn’t have anything to fear from us. Yet, I am leaning more and more towards the possibility that someone did visit us from afar thousands of years ago. There is a fascinating television series aired on the History Channel Thursday evenings called Ancient Aliens. The program is essentially one of questions about how things were built back in the dawn of our history, and the theories presented are compelling. What is remarkable and, unlike sasquatch photos, is presented with extreme clarity, are massive stone slabs precisely cut … so precise you can’t slip a piece of paper between them. And by massive I mean weighing in the hundreds or thousands of tons. We do not have equipment today that is capable of lifting and placing such slabs. And the precision with which they are cut is truly incredible, even more so when you consider that the only tools and technology available to mankind five

Other Hand Apparently, one in five British Columbians believe in UFOs, the existence of sasquatch, conspiracy theories and the like. I’m not entirely sure I would list myself among that 20 per cent, though every now and then on backcountry trips, weird ideas of who/what is sharing the woods has come to mind. However, other than plaster casts of supposed sasquatch footprints and invariably blurred and out-of-focus photos, there isn’t much evidence of actuality. Perhaps one day an intrepid hiker equipped with a quality camera will get a crisp close-up, or find a clump of hair that DNA testing will confirm isn’t from a well-aged hippy or roaming bear. Similarly, I have a hard time believing in UFOs. If someone/something is flying into our airspace you’d think they’d
or ten thousand years ago was a stick with a rock attached at the end, and perhaps a bronze chisel or two. No saws or drills, no instruments to ensure precision, no massive cranes to haul them in place, and no, to our knowledge, form of power to accomplish the work.
I am leaning more and more towards the possibility that someone did visit us from afar thousands of years ago. Yet these technological wonders were accomplished at locations across the Earth – Central America, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Europe – seemingly all at roughly the same time. Even today our brightest minds are unable to provide rational answers to explain how these buildings and stone work were accomplished. Yes, there is the idea that thousands upon thousands of slaves hauled stones
for generations to build the pyramids, but where did the precision of their layout come from? And what is most revealing is that the Pyramids of Giza are not as intricately constructed as other ancient buildings. The precision of design, however, is constant no matter where these immense buildings or incredible stone cuttings are located across the world. And if you believe the large slabs of stone were rolled to their sites on logs, there is massive evidence of such movement where no trees existed, or high up on mountainsides. I not arguing one way or the other about whether or not all of this was done with highly advanced technology by aliens from a planet far away and long ago. I am, however, like the program narrators, questioning how it was accomplished. Unfortunately, until a UFO does land and offers an explanation, I’m willing to be entertained, and perhaps educated, with the questions posed and answers given by the folks on Ancient Aliens. markrushton@abbynews.com

Having ridden HandyDART for seven years now, I feel it time to give the drivers a heart-felt pat on their collective backs. All bus drivers face hazards these days, but the DART drivers are in and out of their buses in all weather, handling wheelchairs, walkers, etc. and the occasional unpunctual or crusty passengers. Yes, some of the “wrinklies” among us become frustrated in our older years. Due to the very nature of the service they provide, complications of scheduling arise because of the unexpected and unforeseen circumstances beyond their control. The kindness, patience and good humour of these underpaid but hard-working drivers is really much appreciated. Many have to move on or up to city buses to meet the financial obligations of life. Unfortunately, due to the segment of the community HandyDART serves, we are not a very articulate bunch. Young and old, we obviously have disabilities of some sort and feel our voices wouldn’t be heard anyway. We hope that sooner rather than later their service and conditions are recognized and salaries achieve parity with city bus drivers.

Only for compliant members of public When I read that B.C.’s Finance Minister and attorney general would be making an announcement in front of Abbotsford’s court house, I thought it a good idea to attend. I arrived to a medium-size crowd of media and political-types milling around the area in front of the microphones. Recognizing a number of people I knew, I headed over to one of them. Before I could enter the area a sheriff asked me whether I was “a member of the public.” When I answered in the affirmative, she said I could not enter, and gave me a choice of listening on the other side of the fence (the roadway), or on the steps of the court house. I chose the latter. I do not blame the sheriff for enforcing orders. However, I wa s carrying neither a protest sign, nor a purse
or any sort of bag. Since I was wearing shorts and my jacket was unbuttoned, it should have been obvious I was concealing neither rotten eggs nor tomatoes. And it soon became apparent that the announcement was for the benefit only of those in line of the microphones, with no sound check done to assure that “members of the public” could even hear what was going on. So I left. On my way back to the car, I came up with a definition for “member of the public” that may suit our leaders – one who provides cash in a compliant yet disinterested manner. And as a friend of mine so clearly opined “Why would you expect to be included with the bureaucrats, bigwigs and politicians ... this was, after all, a photoop.” Regina Dalton

Officers recognized for impaired-driving enforcement
Six Abbotsford Police officers were among those honoured Thursday in Surrey for their efforts in reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roads. Sgt. Kelly Joiner, Const. Patrick Kelly, Const. Steve Fehr, Const. Chris Troughton, Const. Ken Wilson and Const. Marcus Dyck are all members of Alexa’s Team. The group was formed in memory of Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by an impaired driver in 2008 at the age of four. The team has grown over the past five years from 26 members to more than 1,000 RCMP and municipal officers across the province. A total of 95 of those officers were honoured Thursday at Southridge Junior School in Surrey. They were responsible for issuing more than 3,500 impaireddriving-related charges and sanctions in 2012. The Abbotsford officers were responsible for removing 235 impaired drivers from the roads last year. Preliminary data indicates that the number of fatalities related to impaired driving has dropped from 126 in 2010 to 73 to 2011 and 59 last year.
“We know that the members of Alexa’s Team have served unwaveringly to make our communities safer,” said Laurel Middelaer, Alexa’s mom. Three more recognition ceremonies will take place – in Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George – where the officers are honoured by the BCAA Road Safety Foundation, ICBC and the Middelaer family.

Firefighters hold clothing drive
The Abbotsford Professional Fire Fighters Charitable Society (APFFCS) hosts a spring cleaning clothing drive on Saturday, April 13
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event takes place at Fire Hall 1 (32270 George Ferguson Way) and includes fire trucks for the kids to climb
on and a hot dog barbecue. The public is invited to drop off clothing and books. The event is being held to bring more
awareness to the clothing bins that the charitable society has in place throughout the city. “These bins are capable of generating

At first glance, it would have looked like any other cleanup project – a group of workers, power washing the driveway, raking leaves, weeding the garden and even washing windows. Spring cleaning is a common sight at this time of year. But there was much more to this project than most passersby would expect. A group of City of Abbotsford employees,
managers and their family members volunteered their time during the Easter weekend to clean up the home of, and pay homage to, a co-worker, and more importantly, a friend. The group travelled to Langley on March 30 to tidy up the home of Mark Taylor, the city’s general manager of parks recreation and culture who died tragically in a skiing accident last month. But it was also a chance for friends and co-workers to get “a little bit of closure.” It also sent a message to the family, telling them how much Taylor meant to so many people. “It was a beautiful sunny Saturday and I was with people I really like and admire and we had a good time and we celebrated Mark. It was really a positive event in that respect.” The public will have the chance to take part in a “Celebration of Mark Taylor” on April 15 from 3-5 p.m. at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.
Donate food, collect bucks
A local businessman has come up with a new way to celebrate his company’s anniversary and help collect donations for the local food bank. Brian Lee, owner of Lee’s Fine Jewellery, is kicking off a food drive as part of the store’s 31st anniversary. The public is invited to bring canned food donations to the store in return for “Bling Bling Bucks.” These certificates can be collected, and the top six people with the most bucks, will win one of six available prizes, which have a combined worth of more than $10,000. For each can of vegetables donated, a participant will receive 200 BB bucks. Canned fish or meat products donated are worth 400. All food collected will go to the Abbotsford Food Bank. Other ways to earn bucks are by redeeming the store’s weekly newspaper ad, which runs every Tuesday and Thursday in The News, or by returning a weekly postcard that will be mailed out. No purchase is necessary to participate. Prizes include an 18ct emerald and diamond ring valued at $5,795; a 1/2 ct. diamond pendant and chain valued at $2,950; a pendant with sterling silver omega valued at $625, and other items. It’s hard to be overly disappointed when you start the season undefeated, which is where the Abbotsford Cardinals found themselves after a pair of road wins over the Va n c o u v e r Cannons on Saturday. B u t Sunday’s steady drizzle dampened the the local B . C . Premier Baseball League club’s excitement somewhat, as their home opener was rained out. The Cards had planned opening-day festivities to showcase themselves to the community. Mayor Bruce Banman was to be in attendance at DeLair Park, and two local mosquito division (age 10-11) boys baseball teams
were set to play a one-inning exhibition between games of the scheduled doubleheader between Abbotsford and the Whalley Chiefs. “It was ugly, ugly, ugly today,” Cards coach Corey Eckstein said of the weather. “It’s tough having these rainouts early in the season.” The games that Eckstein did get to see put a smile on his face. Facing junior national team pitcher Connor Noble in their opener Saturday, the Cards exercised extreme discipline at the dish. They mustered just one hit and an unearned run over Noble’s five innings, but they extracted seven walks, driving Noble’s pitch count up and forcing the Cannons to go to their bullpen to start the sixth. Abbotsford exploded at that point, racking up seven runs in the sixth en route to an 8-3 win.
Second Cup triumph for senior men’s soccer side The Abbotsford Magnuson Ford United men's soccer team picked up its second Cup win in seven days, beating the Port Moody Gunners 2-0 in the Soccer City Fraser Valley League Cup final on Friday. The previous Saturday, the local side had beaten the same Port Moody squad 3-0 in the Pakenham Cup final. In the rematch, Abbotsford controlled the play during a scoreless first half, then surged ahead on a pair of second-half goals from game MVP Justin Sekhon. Sekhon opened the scoring in the 67th minute, running onto a long pass from Sukh Dhaliwal and hammering a shot off the post and in. He made it 2-0 in the 81st minute, taking a feed from Colton O'Neill in the penalty area, maintaining his balance despite being fouled, and cracking a hard low shot past the Port Moody keeper. With the Fraser Valley Premier Men’s League title now in their possession, the team embarks on the Provincial Cup playdowns.

University of the Fraser Valley volleyball star Kayla Bruce's epic post-season trophy haul continued last week, as she was named the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) female athlete of the year. Bruce had already collected the PacWest conference women's volleyball and overall female athlete of the year
awards, and the CCAA's women's volleyball player of the year – the spoils of victory after leading the Cascades to their first provincial and national titles. The Surrey native became the second Cascade to win the award recognizing the nation's top overall female collegiate athlete. Basketball player Jamie Born won it in 2004-05.
Riley Salter paced the offence with two RBI, while Kurtis Kostuk’s stat line included three walks, an RBI and a run scored. The Cards completed the sweep with a 3-2 win, behind a strong outing from pitcher Daniel Koo. He blanked the Cannons for six innings, striking out six, before Vancouver finally pushed two runs across in the seventh. “We punched a few runs across, got some good pitching performances, and it was a
good way to start the year,” Eckstein summarized.

FADDEN, Kathleen “Kay” Sept 26, 1928 - April 3, 2013 Kay passed away peacefully on April 3, 2013. Predeceased by her husband Phil (1996) brothers Bill and Peter, sisters Beth and Jean. Kay will be missed by her large family Gord (Deb) Al (Leigh) Bob (Sue) Tom (Deb) Bill (Christel) Joan (Ron) Barb (Mark), 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, brother Tom, sisters, Helen, Hazel, Merlie, and many nieces, nephews and friends. From a young age, sports and community clubs were an important part of Kay’s life. Playing, coaching, cheering, baking, sewing, fund raising, Kay was always busy helping others. She will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday April 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. at The Rancho, 35110 Delair Rd. Abbotsford. Elsie was born October 30, 1924 to Cornelius and Katharina Warkentin in Arkadak, Russia. Elsie is predeceased by husband John Siemens and daughter Edna Marie Peters. Elsie is survived by 9 children; Dennis (Betty) of Abbotsford, Linda (Dave) Dyck of Kelowna, Gordon (Donna) of Abbotsford, Helen (Bill) Hooge of Mission, Walt (Sharon) of Abbotsford, Kathy (Dennis) Klassen of Abbotsford, Rita (Rick) Houweling of Grande Prairie, AB, Sam (Bev) of Abbotsford and Rhonda (Derrick) Dueck of Abbotsford. Also 30 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and one brother. John and Elsie married October 9, 1943 in Vancouver. In the spring of 1944 they moved to Abbotsford and farmed 41 years including dairy, poultry and raspberries. In 1986 they retired and moved to Clearbrook. A private family graveside service will be held, then followed by a Memorial Service at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC. He will be remembered by his wife of 58 years Maaike, his son John (Jacqueline), his grandson Joel (Johanna) great-granddaughter Ellianna, granddaughters Emma and Kate, and his daughter Melinda (Gil Read). Roelof was the 2nd of 5 brothers with 3 older sisters. He is survived by his remaining brother Jannus (Jantje) Soeten of Heerveen, The Netherlands, as well as other extended family of sisters-inlaw, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. Roelof immigrated with his wife Maaike from The Netherlands to Canada in 1954 eventually settling in Abbotsford. The first few years in Canada were spent as a farm labourer and working in heavy construction until they were able to establish a dairy farm of their own. Roelof and Maaike enjoyed many years of retirement together. A Memorial service was held on April 9, 2013 at Bethel Reformed Church. After a courageous struggle with cancer, Eve passed away peacefully on March 28, 2013. She was predeceased by her parents Margaret and Frank Thiessen, adopted parents Agatha and Jacob Reimer, brothers Peter Thiessen, Jake Reimer, Died Reimer and her lifelong friend and companion Eileen de la Ronde. Eve is survived by her sisters, Anne Funk, Nettie Keisman and Barbara Pratt (Alex), brothers John Reimer (Helen), Harry Thiessen (Doreen), John Thiessen (Martha) and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Born in Rhineland Municipality in southern Manitoba, Eve completed high school in Altona and nurses training in Brandon. Eve was employed at the Brandon Mental Health Centre where she met fellow
nurse Eileen who became her close friend and companion and was ‘adopted’ by the entire Reimer family. In the mid 1960s Eve and Eileen moved to British Columbia. After a brief time in the Okanagan, and then New Westminster they settled in Port Coquitlam. Eve worked at the Essondale Psychiatric Hospital until her retirement in 1985. In 1993 Eve relocated to Abbotsford where she spent her remaining years. Fond of entertaining at E&Es B&B, traveling, gardening, hobbies such as sewing, knitting and crafts, Eve will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Special thanks to the staff of Cheam 2 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital who provided exceptional care during her final days. A celebration of Eve’s life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the abc Country Restaurant, 32080 Marshall Road in Abbotsford with refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital Cancer Centre or to the FVHC Foundation in support of the Tertiary Palliative Care Unit at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
