The cost and benefits of establishing a water service for residents around the City of Greenwood will be examined, says the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB). RDKB CAO John MacLean presented a memo to the board at its March 27 meeting, outlining the history of the issue. For many years the city has been providing water to properties in Anaconda as well as on the north end of the city (both are rural and part of Electoral Area E), the memo stated. “The original agreements regarding provision of this service were with associations or groups that no longer exist. This has led to difficulties in determining the responsibility for capital maintenance and repair of infrastructure that is outside the city.” The city currently charges an equal water user fee to all users of the city’s water. The city has been taking a small portion of the fees paid by rural users and setting it aside in a reserve fund, which has a current balance of approximately $8,000; however, the memo states that this amount is not sufficient for the capital and maintenance needs of the water system outside the city boundaries. In the memo, MacLean proposes a service be established with the authority to raise funds. “In order to ensure that we are being fair to both the residents of the rural area and the

City of Greenwood, we need to determine the capital needs of the rural service area. We could then apply a reasonable capital replacement charge that would see to the infrastructure needs of the service area for the next 30 years.” He says the city could then take responsibility for the maintenance of the entire system with the knowledge that they would have long-term stable capital funding. The regional district will now put out a request for proposals to find a qualified engineering firm to look at the existing infrastructure, compare that to the normal standard for a service such as this and provide a cost per parcel over a 30-year

time frame. This information could then be used to establish water user rates for the rural water users. The cost of the study (up to $15,000) will be funded from the Feasibility Reserve, though the memo notes this amount may not cover all of the costs of the study. Another option, mentioned only in passing in the memo, would be to expand the municipal boundaries to include the rural areas currently being serviced by the city water system. “Having this information is an absolute necessity when we eventually meet with the public to discuss their options,” MacLean’s memo stated.

Mrs. Green lived in two story house together with an elderly widow. After not hearing from her for a few days, she got a bit nervous. “John”, she called to her son, “do me a favor and go find out how old Mrs. Robinson is.” So six year old John went down the stairs and knocked on Mrs. Robinson’s door. “So how is she?” asked Mrs. Green when John came back up. “How is she?” repeated John “I’ve never seen her so mad in my life, she said it’s none of your business how old she is.”

Stations will close Unattended waste transfer stations in Westbridge, Bridesville and Jewel Lake will be closed. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is moving ahead with plans to implement the Unattended Sites Policy on May 1. That policy would see those unattended stations closed. According to a memo prepared for the board by CAO John MacLean, the final decision to implement the policy was deferred until the March meeting after concerns were raised at the Bridesville Town Hall Meeting in mid-February. “At that meeting a large number of residents from both Bridesville and Westbridge expressed great concern with the possible removal of the unattended sites. The Environmental Services Committee delayed making a final decision in order for more information to go out to the communities and for meetings to take place.” According to the memo, since that time the regional district has sent information to affected residents providing an explanation of the situation and outlining options available to manage waste. Meetings were also held with community representatives in Westbridge and Bridesville. Issues coming out of those meetings that will be referred to the Environmental Services Com-

mittee are: • The placement of signs providing the “Report a Poacher/Polluter” telephone number to try to avoid the very possible increase in illegal dumping. • The sponsorship, for a transitional period, of a common pick-up location where a private hauler would be available for people to drop off waste. • That we expand the current policy of waiving fees for community groups to allow for the waiver of fees in the case of cleaning up illegal sites. • More information to be sent to residents which clearly and concisely explains the issue and the reasons behind the policy. • That the regional district offer spring and fall clean-up days where tipping fees would be waived. “In our view many of these issues make good sense, and will be well received by the community as a whole,” states the memo. “However, they must be carefully looked at to ensure that we do not create another problem (long line-up at facilities). “Some of the issues raised will represent additional costs in offering an effective and efficient solid waste management program. The increases in costs should be fully explored by the Environmental Services Committee.”

Disposal company not new to industry

With changes afoot in the regional district’s waste management plan, West Boundary Disposal is one of two companies coming online to solve the area’s waste management problems. Owner Norm Torgerson offers residential, commercial, junk removal and special event services designed specifically to meet the needs of each individual customer. Torgerson isn’t new to the industry. He started AJM Disposal in Surrey, which is still in operation and now run by his three sons. After he turned the business over to

his boys in the late ’ 90s, he moved to Midway where his sister Lois Rolls lives. Two recent developments prompted Torgerson to get back into waste management – the regional district announced the closure of many of the waste transfer stations in the West Boundary and Joanne Relkov sold R.A.P.I.D. Services, the area’s major waste hauler. “When Joanne decided to retire I thought it would be a good opportunity to keep it local and provide jobs for people in the area,” explained Norm.

Norm Torgerson (left) owner of West Boundary Disposal stands beside his truck with friend and employee Rocky Carlson.

Saddle up for Poker Ride-athon

Time to saddle up for the Rock Creek Poker Ride-A-Thon, this year being sponsored by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) and Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association. Proceeds will be donated to Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association for upgrades. The ride starts at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 19 at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. “You can ride the well marked, beautiful Kettle River horse trails or enjoy acres

Currently West Boundary Disposal has one employee, Rocky Carlson, who says that while the regional district has a job to do too, there’s room for both companies. West Boundary Disposal covers all of Area E except for the City of Greenwood, which does its own garbage pickup. For now they have one scheduled run each week – on Fridays – but Norm says that will change as they grow. They travel off the main roads to pick up from farms and ranches too. They offer on-call junk removal services, from a single pickup to a full truckload of material. “We’re on top of that,” declares Torgerson. “If anybody wants any appliances removed or things like that we will do that for a charge of labour plus landfill costs.” Because electronics waste must go to Grand Forks, he will collect, store and transport it for the same tag fee as the bags. West Boundary Disposal will, at no charge, also pick up bluebag recycling from their customers while on the garbage run. There are two ways to pay for services from West Boundary Disposal – using tags or by setting up an account on the monthly billing system. Both systems charge the same amount per bag but Norm says he prefers his rural customers use the billing system so he’s sure to include them on his route. All you have to do to get on his scheduled route is to call or email him. Tags cost $3 each and are available at McMynn’s Hardware, Husky in Rock

of shady campsites for horses, campers and RVs,” said organizer Ann Rexin, adding that overnight camping is available, just pay at the fairgrounds. They have lots of prizes, lunch will be available and water will be provided for the horses. The entry fees are $25 for adults, $10 for youth, or $50 for a family rate (two adults and more than one child). Registration starts between 8:30 and 9 a.m.

Did you know... When medical services are not available locally, you may claim vehicle expenses used to attend a medical appointment in a community located more than 40 kilometres from your home. If you travel more than 80 kilometres from your home for a medical appointment you are also entitled to claim meal and accommodation costs. You can claim the actual gas and meal receipts, or you can use what is called the “simplified method”. This

allows for a per kilometer rate for the distance driven, which for 2012 was 49.5 cents per kilometer. You are also able to claim a per meal rate, which for 2012 was $17 per meal, up to three meals a day. If you required a driver, as it was unsafe for you to drive, you can also claim meal expenses for them. All other expenditures, such as accommodation and parking, require actual receipts. K. Creek and at Norbert Salvage. Waste disposal for special events such as the fall fair, blues festival or Boogie Bash is another service that West Boundary is set up to handle, and he invites people to call for a quote. “We want to carry on with what Joanne did for the community with R.A.P.I.D. Services,” says Norm. “Being local, we can do that. When local groups like the hockey association want to run a bottle drive we will offer our truck to help with the collections.” West Boundary started with only a pickup, but they now have a full-size truck. “I still have connections to the business through my kids, so anything I need up here will be here – commercial containers, bear bins, whatever is needed will be available. Even though we are local, we can do this. We’re not just a commercial hauler.” Torgerson says his company supports the regional district’s zero-waste and recycling programs and will work closely with them to achieve those goals. “Anything you can divert from the landfill is good,” notes Torgerson. You can contact West Boundary Disposal at 250-449-1733 or via email at westboundarydisposal@gmail.com “Whatever an individual customer needs we will take care of them. We are local and we care about our community. We will cater to the elderly. We will go that extra mile, if they can’t get their garbage to the curb then we will take care of it. Whatever we have to do.”

Lunch will be served starting at noon., followed by the awards at 1:30 and a campfire and sing-along at 2 p.m. Riders must sign a waiver before participating. No dogs, nor smoking, will be allowed. Horse Council of BC membership is recommended. Youth must wear a helmet and be accompanied by an adult. Contact annrexin@hotmail.com, or 250446-2409 for more information.

Ain’t progress grand The BC Utilities Commission held hearings in Kelowna last month regarding FortisBC’s application to install 115,000 residential Smart Meters. There were experts on both sides – with opinions so far apart that the average person doesn’t know what to think. The Union of British Columbia Municipalities passed a resolution at their 2011 convention calling for a “moratorium on the mandatory installation of wireless Smart Meters until the major issues and problems identified regarding wireless smart meters are independently assessed and acceptable alternatives can be made available at no added cost to the consumer”. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary adopted the same resolution in February 2012. The RDKB board of directors went further though, stating their support for the concept of FortisBC having to provide an appropriate and verifiable wired option for consideration by the Commission. Final submissions to the BCUC from Fortis were due on March 28, and by interveners by April 18, with Fortis having a deadline for their replies by April 25. Apparently BCUC has no deadline to deliver their decision. To read transcripts of the entire hearing go to bcuc. com and follow the links to current applications, then FortisBC. Meanwhile folks in Santa Clara, California have come up with something they hope will convince the public that Smart Meters are okay. They’ve integrated a separate wireless signal into the Smart Meters that provides outdoor WIFI throughout the community so everyone can enjoy using their handheld device while being bathed in both radio and ultraviolet waves. The UVs come to us as an unintended consequence from the time when refrigerators were the new technology of the day. Ain’t progress grand? Some say you can’t stop it – but progress without prudence sometimes gets you a oneway ticket to an unknown destination.

A Positive merits so profound G M Kitimat Refinery Project

I first heard of this concept from David Black a number of years ago. At the time I was skeptical of its chances. My initially negative attitude was based mainly on my experience of 10 years service on the board of directors of Imperial Oil. Since I was accustomed to the discussion of petroleum economics centered in Calgary, I saw no need for a refinery in Kitimat. That attitude was based on the fact that there had not been a new refinery built in North America in many years. And any needed increase in petroleum production was achieved by expansion of existing refineries throughout North America. But after my service with Imperial Oil, I went on to serve 4 years at Canfor which led to my nine visits to China in search of lumber markets. My exposure to the phenomenal expansion of China’s economy opened my eyes to the true merit of the Kitimat refinery concept. It made me realize that it would not be just another refinery relying on the North America market but rather a refinery that would supply the vast appetite of China for petroleum products. The challenge will be to draw the attention of Asian investors who would see the value to this investment. It appears that David Black, after many years of effort, is nearing an agreement that could provide the vast capital infusion needed to make this refinery initiative a reality. The appetite for oil products for all Asia will continue to grow and the Kitimat refinery is ideally situated to take advantage. Asian countries, especially China, are very interested in securing sustainable supply of resources that will flow freely without undue trade barriers like surprises with taxes, regulations or tariffs. Canada has a good reputation as a free trade country that can be relied on as a dependable source of supply. Now is a very opportune time to attract the vast investment needed to make the Kitimat refinery go ahead. David Black, with his years of diligence, deserves our appreciation for displaying the foresight and courage to invest his time, money and reputation to help bring along this huge initiative. The positive merits of the Kitimat refinery are so profound that this project is really beyond any political persuasion. Any and all supporters of NDP, Liberal, Conservative or even Green should see the tremendous benefits that would come to B.C. with this project.

This initiative will involve the investment of many billions of dollars. That’s for sure. It’s hard for any of us to visualize a million let alone a billion of any thing. So let’s look at the “ on the ground” facts of such an undertaking for all of us in B.C. Let’s start with the big picture. When it comes to the benefits of a petroleum cycle from well exploration to the gas station, the jurisdiction that hosts the refining process enjoys a huge portion of the value addition to the raw material. For the KFC Project that would mean several thousand mostly trade union jobs for the multi-year term of the construction phase. It would also mean the creation of over 3000 permanent jobs for the operation and supply support of the refinery when running. This refinery would be processing 175 million barrels per year which means the tax revenue that could go toward healthcare, education, vital services for the disabled and elderly would be immense. But job creation and tax revenue is not the only desirable feature of the KRC. It also would provide much lower risk to the marine environment. The shipments out of the refinery would be finished product like aviation fuel, gasoline and diesel. These products if ever spilt would be much less impactful on the marine environment. They would also be transported in smaller ships. I know there are those on both sides of the political aisle that address this as a political issue. And I would disagree with both. This is a project that can be attractive to all political stripes. Trade unions would see a significant increase in jobs and memberships. Hospitals and schools across the province would see an improvement in government funding. Business activity especially in the challenged northwest B.C. would be very positively impacted. And those with a concern for the threat of marine spills would see a significantly reduced exposure for the environment. Based on the huge positive impact this initiative could have on B.C., I think the question should not be if we want it.... but rather, how can we help make sure that the petroleum world sees this as an attractive way to invest billions of shareholder capital.

OPINION by Jim Shepard

–Jim Shepard is retired president of Finning and Canfor, and past director of Imperial Oil

A familiar face to many local ranchers and farmers, Carl Withler came to Rock Creek last week to share his experience on how to ensure meetings stay on track.

Session on meetings

Twenty-eight members of the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association turned out last Thursday night for an information session on procedures to run an effective meeting. Ministry of Agriculture Agrologist Carl Withler, who took time away from his vacation to come to Rock Creek for the evening, facilitated the session. Withler shared his 29 years ex-

perience participating in meetings throughout his career as a civil servant. Over the course of the evening he stressed the intention of a meeting should be to allow everyone to speak and to carry on the business of the organization. The meeting covered everything from how to prepare an agenda, to roles of the executive, to Robert’s Rules.

Four advance to district speak-offs MARIJKA van KUIK Submitted

The 4-H club speak-offs on March 10 were a huge success! Senior placings are: first, Brittany Fillmore, second Sara VandenBorn and third was Megan Ewing. The junior placings were: first Sarah MacDonald, second, Jade Fossen, and third, Alec Elliot. Brittany, Sara, Sarah and Jade will be heading off to Castlegar for the districts on April 6. We’re proud to have you representing us! Thank you to our six judges: Nick Bond, Suzanne Lee, Kendra Eek, Memory Delisle, Davey Corbett and Dwayne Harfman, who gave up a Sunday afternoon to judge our speeches. Here are some updates from the different projects:

On April 13, we will be hosting the 18th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. There will be dinner, an auction, and dancing with live music featuring the Sonny Boys. Tickets are now on sale so if you’re hoping to go, please contact you’re nearest 4-H member or Greg and Jennifer MacDonald. If you have attended before, you are going to notice some changes this year. For the auction, the members

were usually sold to work for an individual, either for a half-day (junior members) or a full day (senior members). This year each club member will be choosing whether they are sold to work for an individual, or they can be sold as a community volunteer with a specific organization. It’s been another busy month in 4-H and we are ready for it to get busier and more exciting!

Ranch Horse Report by Adele Fossen On Feb. 23, all eight ranch horse members came to the Fossen’s ranch for a “sorting day”. This day was done on foot and did not involve our horses. The leaders wanted to teach us the flight zone of cattle. It is important to learn this on foot first, so then you can do it on horse. We started by gathering 90 head of yearlings. We then got to take turns learning how to sort out the animals. We learnt where to be to make the animal go in a certain direction. We also learnt how to judge replacements heifers. During the day, we got to see a calf being born, along with lots of new babies! It was a great day and we are looking forward to our next adventure.

Sewing Report by Hanna Harpur On March 21, the sewing members got together and held a meeting at the van Kuik’s house. For the past month the girls had been working on accomplishing their task of preparing 40 quilt squares. The quilt squares are for the purpose of a quilt that will be auctioned off at the Cattle Baron’s Ball. The girls moved the quilt squares around until they were satisfied with the design. Each of the girls got 40 quilt squares to sew together. This year, with the help of our 4-H clothing leader, Juanita van Kuik, the sewing members have gone from making a lap quilt to a quilt with 300 squares! Hope to see you at the Cattle Baron’s!

Photography Group Report by Colin Grob On March 9, the photography group got together at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. We had Andrew and Sarah Tripp come and talk about how to take better photos. We were given a topic and told to take pictures of it. We later looked at and critiqued each other’s photos. A big thankyou to Andrew and Sarah for their helpful tips on photography.

Beef Report by Rylonn Elliot The beef kids have been halter breaking and combing their steers. This will get the animal used to being handled and the kids need to keep their steer’s coat clean and healthy. Their first weighin was on Saturday, March 30. Greg MacDonald and Doug Fossen are doing husbandry checks this spring. ***

What you call JUNK could be someone’s TREASURE.

Got stuff to gi ve away? Recycle it! Call or email us with your items and we will put it in the Free 4 All. It doesn’t cost you a penny!

Introducing

Brielle Stent

Brielle Stent is a local product, having spent her entire school career in the Boundary. She knows exactly the career she’d like to follow: midwifery. “In the next five years I want to be at university, either UBC in Vancouver or in Kelowna,” she states. “My final goal after university is to be working in a hospital or for a business as a midwife.” Being a midwife is something she’s known she wanted to do for a long time. “I met this lady when I was in about Grade 9 who was expecting a baby. She already had six kids and I followed her kids around everywhere – I hung out with them and babysat them. I had so much fun playing with them. “She told me she was going to have a baby and I was so excited and then I followed her around instead of her kids. She was expecting a baby and I guess I kind of had an interest in women who were expecting babies and just how it was interesting to me how a baby could grow inside of someone.” Brielle’s mom told her that her friend was go-

Introducing

Van Atkinson

Van Atkinson came to BCSS in Grade 9, moving to Midway from Nova Scotia with her family. After graduation in June she will return to work at the Greenwood Museum, where she worked last summer too. Working at the museum provides a wealth of experience in a wide variety of tasks, including accessioning donated artifacts, upgrading photos using Photoshop, cleaning the building, handling the cash register, assisting visitors, and guiding tours. All of these responsibilities will prove to be assets in her chosen field of retail management. This September she plans to begin a one-year online course in retail management and, when her sister graduates from BCSS next year, they plan on looking for an apartment in Kelowna where she hopes to get a position in a fashion store and work her way up. Van has been active in BCSS Spirit Club – making event posters, helping organize school events, working on fundraisers and helping to decorate and organize the Spirit Club Photo Book. She has also used her artistic talents to

ing to have a midwife for the delivery and, once Brielle looked up the definition of a midwife, she was hooked. Since Grade 10 Brielle has been working for Sorted Solutions, a business started by her mom. Prior to that she used her certificates in Food Safe and babysitting courses to find other jobs, serving at weddings or babysitting. She’s served her community in many capacities as a volunteer too with the Boundary Community Church Youth Group, BCSS Spirit Club, helping the Lions Club pack hampers and serving at the Easter dinners. Brielle’s paperwork for her Grade 12 exit interview lists both paid and volunteer positions she has held. Reviewing the dates she’s listed you come to realize that she’s been busy; but what jumps out at you is the fact that her list of volunteer experiences is twice as long as her paid. She’s been to Mexico twice with the youth group and she credits her participation with that program with a lot of her growth. This summer Brielle intends to work as a senior cabin leader at Pines Bible Camp. She’ll be saving her money to go to school because midwifery takes up to four years at UBC Vancouver.

work on the school collage. She says she was surprised to find that drama class meant she’d have to perform in front of an audience. “I wasn’t expecting to perform in front of people,” laughs Van when Councillor Pam Storie asked her about her performance as Frenchie in the BCSS production of Grease last December. “I thought it was just a class where you do exercises. When I first started there the teacher told us we had to perform. So I was kind of nervous because I wasn’t expecting that.” “I am not a really brave like person,” she declares. Although Van did admit that she felt good about it in the end, she also said she wasn’t planning on doing it again any time soon. From Nova Scotia she brings her experience of working with the Boys and Girls Clubs, where she completed a leadershiptraining course, prepared food and beverages, and organized and co-ordinated games. Other experiences listed on her resume are working at the canteen and putting in time in the kitchen at the Copper Eagle. Van has successfully completed Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), Basic Army Cadet course and first aid courses. For hobbies she prefers reading, swimming and going for nature walks.

Simmonds on the run

Midway resident Jenny Simmonds is only a month away from running her first full marathon. She will take part in the BMO Vancouver Marathon on May 5 as a member of Team Fox, the grassroots part of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research. Jenny has been training for the run since the end of December and last Sunday made her first 32-kilometre (20 mile) run. You can often see her running Midway’s Riverwalk Trail with her dog Glenn. Jenny has run a couple of half-marathons before and was planning to do the full 42-kilometre (26.2-mile) run at the

Vancouver marathon this year. When she saw that Team Fox was an official charity partner this year she signed on. “I wanted to get involved with the Parkinson’s community for a little while and I took that as a sign,” she recalls. These days she is following a dedicated training routine. She runs five days and has two rest days each week. The run is taking a commitment from the entire family as husband Andrew and their children Teagan and Lincoln all pitch in to accommodate Jenny’s busy training schedule. “I decided to use my love of running to help out a cause that is very close to our family’s hearts. My father-in-law has Parkinson’s and was first diagnosed when Andrew and I began dating in 2000. It has progressively gotten worse and this is my way of showing support even though we live on the opposite coast. “I definitely think of him when I am struggling through the miles out there knowing that he struggles with day-to-day activities. I take it as a privilege that I am able to run for 20 miles at a time – for sure.” As part of her commitment to Team Fox she has committed to raising a minimum of $1,000. She is very close to the goal but would love to see how much more can be raised by May 5. Jenny is running with her friend Krista Brackett, who lives in Nelson; together they have taken the name Foxy Running Mamas. You can donate online at http://www2.michaeljfox.org/ goto/jennysimmonds or visit her blog at simplybeme.com.

Discover Rock Creek makes donation On behalf of Discover Rock Creek Aaron Pownall (centre, left) presents a cheque to Midway Fire Chief Walter Osellame.

The Midway Fire Department was given a $100 donation from Discover Rock Creek to help with the proposed rural fire service. Midway Mayor Randy Kappes said that while council has not finalized any agreements with any property owners, work is ongoing to bring the new contract service into being. “Documentation is still being worked on and the money will be held in trust until such time that the program is formally put in place,” he said. The proposal would see rural residents trained as members of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department and fire protection offered by contract between property owners and the village. Some 18 Kettle Valley/Rock Creek residents are now training, bringing the total number of members to 33.

HUGS S and G U L S Hugs: To Tina Hesketh and the Kettle Wildlife Association for donating the beautiful primrose plants to Parkview Manor. Hugs: To Kim Lindseth and the Canadian Cancer Society for donating bouquets of daffodils to the residents of Parkview Manor. Hugs: T o Edward and Martha (the dog) for the weekly visits to Parkview Manor. It is a special treat for our pet lovers.

healthy eating – as children are often more enthusiastic about trying vegetables they have grown themselves. Gardening doesn’t necessarily require a plot of land or hours of weeding. Gardening can happen in containers on a balcony or patio. In fact, many garden plants such as herbs, lettuce, radishes, and tomatoes do very well in containers. Raised beds can eliminate the need for weeding and are great for compact spaces. Try the square foot garden method and give your child a square of their own to care for. This popular method teaches gardening skills with-

Pharmasave helps Pharmasave has donated six pallets of Pharmasave N-95 allpurpose protective face masks to Rotary World Help. “They will be a valuable addition to the equipment and supplies we send to hospitals and medical clinics in developing countries throughout the world,” said Wayne Crossen, president of Rotary World Help. out being overwhelming. Watching a plant grow from a seed is like magic for young children, but slow germination rates can be trying for even the most patient child. Plant a mixture of seeds and potted plants to help keep their interest. Sunflowers and beans are fast growing plants from seed. My son started a sunflower from a seed at preschool last year and was absolutely amazed at how tall it grew; he was so proud to share the seeds with all of his little friends. If you lack suitable space to garden at home, consider renting a plot at a community garden. Involving your kids in a community garden exposes them to an amazing variety of vegetables grown by many different gardeners. Kids and parents involved with community gardens also benefit from the wisdom of other gardeners. Connect with your local food action committee, community or health centre to find out if there is a community garden near you. If you have a child in school, ask if there is interest in starting a school garden. Planning for a school garden can start now and carry over into the fall so that the school garden will be ready to plant next spring. For information on school gardens see http://healthyeatingatschool.ca/. These websites can help you and your kids start gardening: http://urbanext.illinois.edu/firstgarden/ and http://www. kidsgardening.org/ – by Linda Boyd, a community nutritionist with Interior Health

2013 One Book shortlist announced

Submitted

They came, they deliberated—and they deliberated some more. The panel of learned librarians tasked with choosing the 2013 One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK) shortlist had a tough time, considering the wealth of talent throughout the Kootenays. But choose

they did, and the Kootenay Library Federation (KLF), host of the annual OBOK reader’s choice celebration, is ready to announce the selected books. On this year’s shortlist: Confined Space by Deryn Collier, The Dolphin’s Tooth: a Decade in Search of Adventure by Bruce Kirkby, and Never Going Back by Antonia Banyard.

“It’s a great shortlist,” says KLF director Joanne Richards. “As always, I feel incredibly proud of the level of literary talent we enjoy in our region.” Confined Space introduces small-town coroner Bern Fortin as he investigates a murder in a brewery. Author Deryn Collier grew up in Montreal and lived in Creston – where she worked for a time at Columbia Brewery – before settling in Nelson. Confined Space was shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis Award for best unpublished first crime novel before it was snatched up by Simon & Schuster in 2012. The Dolphin’s Tooth: a Decade in Search of Adventure (McLelland & Stewart) follows Kimberley author Bruce Kirkby through 15 years of high adventure in some of the world’s edgier places. From crocodile attacks while running Africa’s Blue Nile Gorge to rescuing a fallen Sherpa on Mount Everest, Kirkby, a Globe and Mail columnist and photographer, has travelled to 80 countries and embraced 18 guiding seasons with an uncommon passion for the wild. Never Going Back (Thistledown Press)

brings together a group of high school friends after 10 years of separation as they converge for a friend’s memorial, each of them with their own memories—and secrets—about a decade-old tragedy, and each having found their own ways to cope. Author Antonia Banyard has lived in South Africa, Zambia, Australia, and Nelson—where she now lives with her family. The reading public is asked to vote for their favourite shortlisted book between April 15 and Aug. 2. The 2013 selected OBOK author is celebrated in a tour of select Kootenay libraries in the fall. The KLF makes sure that all libraries in the federation have copies of the shortlisted titles – so the reading can begin, and feisty conversations ensue. This is the fifth anniversary of OBOK, a region-wide book club supported by public libraries in the East and West Kootenay, and the Columbia Basin Trust. Visit www.obok.ca – it’s the place to find information about the books and interviews with the authors, as well as upcoming OBOK events at a library near you.
