Suspect in U.S. shooting incident arrested in Abby

A suspect who was the target of a day-long manhunt after shooting at U.S. border agents was arrested Tuesday night in Abbotsford. The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) was called in to assist in the search just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Michael Milne, a spokesman with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said U.S. border agents from the Sumas station came across two suspicious men

at about 9:10 a.m. in an area of the Columbia Valley, about seven miles east of the town of Sumas. He said they were wearing camouflage gear and were carrying backpacks. Abbotsford given $600,000 to develop long-term plan

Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News Abbotsford has received a $600,000 grant from the provincial government to develop a long-term expansion plan for courtrooms in lower Fraser Valley communities. The announcement was made Tuesday morning at the Abbotsford courthouse. Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond said there are plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the Lower Fraser Valley Courts Regional Plan with mayors from Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, Township of Langley and Surrey, pending final council approvals. The plan will be a collaborative project among the five municipalities and the province.

were notified of the incident because there was a possibility the suspect would cross into Canada over Vedder Mountain. On Tuesday morning, local police cordoned off an area of Sumas Prairie and the northern slopes of the mountain between Marion Road and the Vye Road power station, and along Old Yale Road. Canada Border Service officers were also involved in the search, as were members of the APD and the Lower Mainland RCMP emergency response teams. U.S. Black Hawk police helicopters and the Canadian Air 1 police helicopter circled the area, while the APD’s armoured vehicle patrolled the streets. Ian MacDonald said. On the American side of the border, the Whatcom County Sheriffs Office assisted border patrol officers in the search for the suspect, including sending out a special response team. MacDonald said border jumping typically involves a certain type of person. “People who tend to make these types of crossings tend to be engaged in some type of criminal behaviour, and that often involves drugs,” he said. Walk for Lysa raises MD funds Vimy Ridge Candlelight Vigil

Vimy Ridge Candlelight Parade and Vigil will take place on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 6:30pm located at the Abbotsford Cenotaph, Thunderbird Square, Veterans Way, Abbotsford. This tribute, to the importance of honouring Vimy Ridge from World War One, will include a candlelight vigil. Celebrating life of Mark Taylor

A “Celebration of Mark Taylor” will take place at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) on April 15 from 3-5 p.m. The event is open to the public. Taylor was Abbotsford’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture and had been with the city for two decades. The United Way of the Fraser Valley (UWFV) has announced its grant recipients for the year. UWFV covers the area from Aldergrove and Mission, east to Boston Bar. They presented a total of $140,000 in grants to various groups, including multiple Abbotsford organizations, to provide community services in the Fraser Valley. The Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley received a grant to fund counselling services and an outreach worker for the Warm Zone. Abbotsford Community Services’ Autumn House and the Cyrus Centre both received grants to assist in programs to combat youth homelessness. Vibrant Abbotsford received a grant for a living wage program, which will assist community members living in poverty. The Abbotsford Early Childhood Committee also received funding for its program for early childhood screening for developmental delays. The Cyrus Centre received a small grant last year from UWFV. Les Talvio, director of the centre, said their organization was able to accomplish a lot with the amount they received. The organization used the money to create a cooking program at the Cyrus Centre. It taught youth how to budget, plan, cook and serve a meal. Each Wednesday, the meal at the Cyrus Centre was provided by youth in the program. The youth also learned how to make meals using the food from hampers.

Local artists share exhibit The Abbotsford Arts Council will host a new show at the Kariton Art Gallery this month. The exhibit is a dual artist showcase featuring a collection of works in mixed media by Jeff Sawatzky and a separate collection of works in mixed media by Jennifer Chew. Sawatzky’s contribution to the show entitled “series 9” includes works inspired by drawings he found in old instructional and technical manuals. The simplicity and the educational nature of the manuals became the foundation for the repetitive nature found in his paintings. Working on these made Sawatzky feel “connected back to a time with less technical reliance and more dependence on mechanical means of development.” Sawatzky began his art career working with various art professionals including muralist Dean Lauzé, producing signs and painting murals for theatres and gymna-

siums. “The Interstitial Spaces Series” is the title of Jennifer Chew’s collection of works for the show, inspired during her constant travel, entering and exiting places between work, university, and home. Being located within these “interstitial spaces of mobility” has allowed her to

“take notice of how they are continually shifting.” “Often overlooked, these spaces of passage are part of our everyday experience as we use, pass and move through them to get to somewhere else,” said Chew. The show runs April 5-30 at Kariton Art Gallery, 2387 Ware St.

The routes that Tyler Ruegsegger and Brett Olson took this season to make an impact with the Abbotsford Heat are remarkably similar. Both forwards came into training camp last fall on a tryout basis, long shots to make the team given the Heat’s depth up front with the NHL lockout in full swing. But both defied the odds, cracking the roster and carving out similar roles as consistent, versatile forwards who can slot in anywhere in head coach Troy Ward’s lineup. “They’ve really given us a lot of consistency within our lines, with all the call-ups and injuries,” Ward said of Ruegsegger and Olson. “Both of them are moveable parts. They can play left wing, they can play right wing, they can play up and down the lineup, they can play a skill game, they can play a checking role.” Taking a step back, Ruegsegger and Olson’s big-picture journeys in their hockey careers also bear striking similarities.

after returning, he tore the MCL in his right knee. But Olson came back strong his senior season, captaining the Huskies and leading the team in scoring with 10 goals and 20 assists in 39 games. Calgary Flames assistant GM John Weisbrod liked what he saw and extended an invite to Abbotsford’s training camp, and Olson made the most of the opportunity. “With any sport that you play, there are things you can control and things you can’t control,” reasoned Olson, who has eight goals and 10 assists in 65 games this season. “If you can have the ability know the difference and put those things aside and not really worry about the things

you can’t control, you can really get back in a good mindset. If they let them hinder you, they can end your career, just mentally mess you up for however long. It’s almost a self-preservation thing to put them behind you.” The paths they’ve traveled have been similar, and Ward notices further parallels in Ruegsegger and Olson’s personalities as well. “They’re both really honest players,” he explained. “They very rarely show up with any regrets. “A lot of people show up in life with regretful days, but these are two players who, whether it’s on-ice or off-ice, they don’t have many.”

on. He was kind of a utility guy. He could do everything – power play, penalty kill, four-on-four, whatever it might be.” The two former foes crossed paths again in August 2012 at a summer scrimmage in Minneapolis, Minn., and discovered they were both set to attend Heat camp in September. They ended up rooming together during camp, and they’re also roommates on the road. Both players have also persisted through injuries at critical junctures in their hockey careers. Ruegsegger has been around the Heat for a while now – he suited up for 12 games in 2010-11 and four more in 2011-12. He was initially a professional tryout (PTO) guy, summoned from the ECHL to fill in with the Heat as an injury replacement. But last year, he seemed to be establishing himself with the club – he earned an AHL contract in March that would take him through to the end of the season. But shortly after putting pen to paper on that contract, he suffered a gruesome injury during practice. On a five-onzero power-play drill, he took a Clay Wilson slap shot to the face. It ended his season. “My face was basically like spiderweb-cracked glass,” he said. “I had to have surgery on my mouth and all sorts of dental work done. It was not one of my happier moments. “It was frustrating, no doubt,” added Ruegsegger, who has eight goals and six assists in 61 games with the Heat this season. “But I believe there’s a plan in it. You’ve just got to deal with it, and it makes you a better person and a better player in the long run.” Olson, too, had to survive injury issues that could have sidetracked him. In his final year of junior hockey with the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks, he suffered a severe shoulder separation that kept him out of the lineup during the early portion of the season, which is the peak of college recruiting. Nevertheless, he returned and played well, and managed to land a scholarship from Michigan Tech. Olson became a key contributor with the Huskies, but a series of unfortunate events during his third year threatened to torpedo his pro stock. On a five-on-three penalty kill, he shattered his left hand blocking a shot. And three weeks

Since the start of the season, the Abbotsford Heat’s blueline brigade has endured a massive exodus of top talent. The team’s top four defencemen at the start of the campaign comprised T.J. Brodie (called up by Calgary Flames), Steve McCarthy (departed for Europe), Joe Piskula (traded) and Chris Breen (injured), but none of those major minutes-munchers are available at this point. Of the players who have been thrust into the breach, Drew MacKenzie has arguably done the most to distinguish himself. Since being recalled from the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies in early January, the 24-yearold rookie out of the University of Vermont has shown a bit of offensive spice (one goal and eight assists in 22 games) and an ability to quarterback the power play. He’s also the active team leader in plus/minus at +4 (Brodie and Piskula were both at +5 at the time of their respective departures). “Obviously we miss those key D-men,” MacKenzie noted. “But I’m happy to try and fill a role if I can. It’s been pretty exciting so far. “It’s been great playing the minutes I’ve been playing. I’m really getting used to a lot of situations, whether it’s playing the power play, shorthanded.” After wrapping up his NCAA eligibility at Vermont last spring, MacKenzie was stuck between a rock and a hard place as he tried to launch his pro career. The Buffalo Sabres, who picked him in the seventh round of the 2007 NHL entry draft, owned his rights until Aug. 15, but they elected not to sign him. That left the New Canaan, Conn. native in limbo as free agency opened on July 1, and by the time he became a free agent, the job market had largely dried up with the NHL lockout looming. But just before training camps opened in late September,

MacKenzie landed a two-year AHL contract from Abbotsford. “I signed it the week before I got here,” he said. “It was pretty nerve-wracking, but exciting at the same time that I got the opportunity.” MacKenzie was one of the last cuts as the Heat broke camp, but he thrived after being sent down to the Grizzlies, posting 14 points in 25 games. As the Abbotsford roster began to thin out following the end of the lockout, he got his chance at the AHL level. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing – every so often, he’ll get caught on an ill-advised pinch in the offensive zone. But by and large, he’s acquitted himself well. “He’s struggled at times, which is natural for a young player, but in general he’s done a nice job,” Heat head coach Troy Ward said. “When he first got here, he had that initial electricity that you see from any new player that gets into the lineup. . . . Then I thought he took a little bit of a step back, but now he’s starting to come up again. But I think that’s normal. Only four more home games to go in our 2012-13 regular season – time flies! As I look back on our Heat season so far, I can clearly see that it has been the little things which have created the largest impact. This was certainly the case in my junior hockey career as well. Small changes that I made impacted the development of my game in a large way. One summer as our family drove to Disneyland and back (we lived in Burnaby at the time), I decided to squeeze a wrist-strengthener for the duration of the trip. I didn’t count how many reps I put on that gripper, but I do know that the next season I scored 50-plus goals, most of them with my wrist shot. During my NHL days in Montreal, I worked on faking shots and moving laterally before shooting the puck. I would dedicate whole practices to work on this technique, and it paid off. Our Heat players also work daily on the “little” parts of their game that give them that small edge. Our coaching staff focuses on improving the little parts of our team-game that gives us the biggest return. The Heat off-ice team has remained focused on implementing the little things that create a large guest experience for our fans. During this past season our people have:

Pilots to host 2014 Keystone Cup

The Abbotsford Pilots have been awarded the hosting rights for the 2014 Keystone Cup. The Western Canadian junior B hockey championship tournament will run at MSA Arena in April of next year, and general manager Jack Goeson said he’s “extremely excited” his bid was selected. “It is truly an honor and privilege for not only our organization but all our players, coaching staff, many longstanding volunteers, sponsors and our great loyal fans,” Goeson said. By virtue of their hosting duties, the Pilots will be guaranteed a berth in the six-team tourney, and they’ll be joined by provincial champions from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. Representatives from B.C. have won the Keystone Cup three of the past four years, including a victory by the Pilots in 2012 (see photo above). It was the first Western Canadian title in franchise history. The Pilots also participated in the Keystone tourney in 1999,

finishing third in Airdrie, Alta. Hosting the Keystone, Goeson said, is “probably the only thing I haven’t done in (junior B) hockey.” Over the past 25 years, the Pilots have played host to the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial championship five times, as well as the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s allstar game and prospects showcase. “We’re lucky because we have so many good volunteers,” he said. “It’s a chance for them to experience it (the Keystone Cup) as well.” With a berth to the Western Canadians in the bag already, Goeson acknowledged it should give his team an edge as they recruit new players this summer. “But we’ll approach the season the same way – we want to finish first and win,” he said. “That’s our mindset. “There’s the possibility of getting some good recruits out of this – you’ve got to put together a good, balanced team. But we proved even last year – we had a lot of local kids and a good-skating club. You just have to have guys who work hard and play as a team. “We have a good nucleus of players coming back – a lot of that is there. But you’ve always got to keep retooling and making it better.”

Freeman, Bruce honoured by Cascades Sam Freeman and Kayla Bruce were the big winners on Wednesday evening as the University of the Fraser Valley athletic department handed out its annual awards. Freeman, a fifth-year guard with the men’s basketball team, was named the Cascades’ male athlete of the year. He was a first team Canada West allstar after finishing second in the conference in scoring at 21.2 points per game, and finished his UFV career as the second-most prolific three-point shooter in Canada West history. “I am very proud of Sam’s accomplishments this year,” said Cascades men’s basketball coach Adam Friesen. “He was a true veteran leader on our team and helped me with the transition from assistant coach to head coach.” Bruce, UFV’s female athlete of the year, helped power the women’s volleyball team to PacWest provincial and CCAA national titles – both were firsts in program history. She led the conference in total offence and blocks, and was third in kills. “Many athletes have moments of greatness; it is Kayla’s consistency that separates her from the rest,” women’s volleyball coach Dennis Bokenfohr said of Bruce, who was also named the national women’s volleyball player of the year and the PacWest female athlete of the year. Justin Sekhon, a midfielder on the men’s soccer team, was the male rookie of the year after notching three goals and two assists in his inaugural season. Volleyballer Kira Tome picked up the women’s rookie of the year award for orchestrating the Cascades’ potent offence from the setter position. Alexa McCarthy of the women’s basketball team won the outstanding community service award for her tireless efforts, including the Halloween walk and knock food drive and UFV’s Shoot for the Cure fundraiser for breast cancer research. Last month she won the Sylvia Sweeney award, the national women’s basketball award for community service. Another women’s hoopster, Nicole Wierks, won the UFV academic award for

having the highest GPA in the athletic department, among athletes who started at least half their team’s games. She averaged 12 points and 5.4 re-

He’d gone down to Vernon College in Texas in 2004, fresh off a stint with the Canadian junior national team, and while he pitched well, he was bothered by increasing pain and stiffness in his elbow. Upon returning home to Abbotsford in December, he had an MRI and got the results on Christmas Eve. It wasn’t good news. The ulnar collateral ligament was completely torn, and the lateral collateral ligament was significantly damaged. Eckstein’s fastball hit 89 miles per hour on the radar gun in September 2004, but never came close to touching that again following the surgery, even after a year and a half of rehab. He lost his scholarship, and at age 19, his playing career was done. “It was tough to swallow,” he acknowledged. “You work so hard for so long, and to know it was coming to a halt, it was tough to take.

“But when I look back, it might have been the best thing that’s ever happened to me, as far as what’s going on in my life.” Indeed, it’s remarkable what Eckstein has been able to accomplish in baseball in eight short years since then. He made a lightning-quick transition into coaching – his right arm was still in a sling when he led his first sessions at Abbotsford’s Power Zone Academy in the spring of 2005. He also began helping out with the Abbotsford Cardinals, the local B.C. Premier Baseball League club, and currently serves as head coach of the senior under-18 team. Eckstein would later open his own private coaching business, Sandlot Baseball, and he heads up the baseball academy at Yale Secondary. If if all those responsibilities weren’t enough, he’s also served as the third base coach with the Canadian junior national team since 2008, helping guide the squad to a surprising silver medal at the world junior championship in South Korea in 2012. “A lot of things have happened that I didn’t think would happen by the age of 27,” marveled Eckstein, who is weighing an offer to join the staff at the B.C. Youth Baseball Legacy Complex, a world-class training centre set to open in Penticton this fall. “It’s a bit of a grind, but I’m working with kids every day, so I’m pretty fortunate. You get to do what you love on a daily basis, and not too many people have that.” Eckstein’s Cardinals open the 2013 season this weekend. Feb 12, 1930-March 23, 2013 Surrounded by family, John passed away at home on March 23, 2013. A much loved husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend, John leaves to mourn, his wife Rose, sons Rodney (Tom) and Brian (Bryan), step-children Fiona (Kent), Lorna, Ruth (Doug), Dawson (Elizabeth). Missing their Poppa are grandchildren Devon, Chris, Sean, Chelsea, Curtis, Jasmine, Thomas, Brandon, Daniel and Violet and great grand-daughter Brooklyn. Also grieving are Nephew Boyd (Lorraine, Jennifer), Niece Lesley (Al, Michael) , cousins including Leslie, Patsy, Richard, Colin (Christina) and Chris, John’s many friends and his dog Molly. John was predeceased by his father Frederick, mother Joan and sister Sheila. John was born in Winnipeg. He completed his B.Sc (geology) at the University of Manitoba. Following his early career as a geologist (survey and oil field geophysics) John took teacher training at UBC. He found his vocation teaching high school math and science for over 30 years (3 years in Langley and then at Mission Secondary School). Special thanks go to Dr. Scott Bakker, Chilliwack Hospital staff, Home and Palliative Care services for their wise, compassionate care. Thanks also to dear friends El, Woody and Suzy who helped ease John’s final days. Johnny-the-rock will be remembered as a loving, generous, smart, funny man whose interests spanned history, politics, geology and film. If so desired, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Chilliwack SPCA or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. A service of Thanksgiving for John’s life will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, 46098 Higginson Rd, Chilliwack BC at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013.

Rodney Wayne Plosz Rodney Wayne Plosz aged 56 years passed away on March 22, 2013. Lovingly remembered by his wife Pam; brother Theodore; sister Theresa; daughter Ashley; son Dylan; nephews Anthony, Nathan, Dallas and niece Nalani; as well as many relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Jim & Jean Plosz and brother Robert Plosz. Services to be held at a later date.

SCOTT Edith Ann Edith went peacefully to be with The Lord on March 27th 2013 with her loving son Dale by her side. Edith will also be lovingly remembered by her daughter Linda Higgins; granddaughter Baylee Higgins; along with many relatives and all of those whose lives she touched. Edith is predeceased by her husband Bob. Her family would like to thank the nurses, staff, and volunteers at the Mission Hospice Palliative Care Unit. A special thank-you to Mom’s friend Tris. RINAS Eric Eric passed away comfortably and at peace, with his family by his side, on Friday March 29th, 2013 at the age of 83 in Mission Hospice. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Eloise; son Kevan (Sheila); daughter Debbie (Jack); daughter Pamela (Dave); brother Elmer (Nancy); sisters Elsie, Hilda; 6 grandchildren Sheryl, Ashley (Chris), Jonathan, Kaitlyn, Shayla, Corinne; and 2 great grandchildren Caden and Wyatt. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Lydia Rinas; eldest daughter Cheryl; brother Ed and sister Alice. It is sad to announce the passing of Dave Wise, a loving father, grandfather and friend. Born September 9, 1944, in St. Paul’s Hospital and passed away suddenly March 24, 2013 in Abbotsford Regional Hospital after a long, courageous fight with cancer. Dave is predeceased by his mother Dorothy (Wise) and father David Wise. He will be missed by his wife of 27 years, Irene Eve Wise, his brothers James and Gary, sister Pat and sons Jerry (Paula) and Gordie Wise, granddaughter Lulu Wise, stepchildren Deb (Andy) and Rick and granddaughter Maddy Meyer, countless cousins, nieces, nephews and very good friends. He will be remembered as a witty, humorous, accepting man who could light up a whole room. He was a member of the Eagles Club, and was known for always making light of every situation. Anganeta Schellenberg passed away peacefully at the Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC on March 28, 2013. Anganeta (Netti) was born on July 6, 1923 in Nikolaipol, Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Gerhardt Schellenberg, who passed away June 13, 1997. She will be missed by her three daughters: Susan (Rob) Bernhardt, Elizabeth (Randy) Harris, and Margaret (Gordon) Graham, five grandchildren Anne Bernhardt, Mark (Julie) Bernhardt, Karen (Axel) Doepel, David Graham and Mathew Harris and two great-grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers: Margaret Funk, Helen Isaac, John (Kathe) Rempel and Henry Rempel. SEPT; Bud (GT) Bud Sept, the only child of George and Josephine, born October 13, 1927, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, died peacefully March 30, 2013 at age 85 surrounded by his family. Bud was predeceased by his loving first wife Betty and is survived by his devoted wife Barbara. He will also be missed by his loving daughters Bobbi and Joanne (Norm), step children Kim (Doug), Rick (Eileen), Roxann (Rob), and Kirk as well as 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many friends. Bud was a successful business man and retired with a lifetime membership in the Life Underwriters Association of Canada. He lived life passionately with many community contributions, including firefighting (Quesnel) and as President of both the Kinsmen Club and K40 (Mission). Bud’s contributions to health care awarded him an Honorary Life Membership with Mission Memorial Hospital for his service as Chairman of the BC Health Association, President of the Canadian Long Term Care Association, and many years on the hospital board, as well as the Board of Pleasant View Care Home. Bud embraced life through his love of people, music, fishing, building homes, RVing and time spent in Vernon. Bud had a passion for travel that led him around the world. He will always be remembered for his positive attitude, sense of humor, boisterous laughter and helping others. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 8469 Cedar Street, Mission on Friday April 5th at 1:30 pm.
