TOURISM ASSOCIATION’S AGM
Looking to the outskirts A focus for the PQBTA in 2013 will be to better promote small centres JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
The work of the Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association (PQBTA) is “critical” to the financial health of our region and should be better supported by the municipality, says a Parksville city councillor. More than 77 per cent of the association’s 2012 revenue of $528,000 came from a two per cent hotel tax (which is up for renewal through the provincial government in 2014). About 10 per cent came from fees and surcharges, including those from member businesses and municipalities like Parksville. “I think this group is absolutely critical to the tourism economy of Parksville Qualicum,” Coun. Bill Neufeld, the city’s non-voting representative on the PQBTA’s board, said at the association’s annual general meeting Thursday. “I think we get more than our dollars’ worth and I think we should be supporting it far more greatly. Council should be putting more dollars into it.” The association actually budgeted for a deficit in 2012 (it worked out to $86,308), due to a major re-branding project that eventually changed its name. The group used to be called the Oceanside Tourism Association. Both the chair of the board Robynne Shaw (the general manager of Sunrise Ridge Resort) and PQBTA executive director Blain Sepos believe the re-branding has been a success. “It’s been received very well, within the community and beyond,” said Shaw. “I’ve heard anecdotally from people that they really feel it’s a strong brand,” said Sepos. “It’s fresh and eye-catching.” The PQBTA budget for 2013 forecasts a rise in revenue of just less than two per cent. “You wouldn’t think two per cent is a big thing, but that’s probably a pretty aggresive target,” said Sepos. “The meetings market, which is a big part of what grows our shoulder/off season stuff, still has huge challenges. It’s not as robust as it was in 2008 — governments and corporations are trying to save money wherever they can.” Shaw said a focus for 2013 will be getting tourists to look at visiting smaller centres once they have enjoyed the amenities in Parksville and Qualicum Beach. KITE DAY: Member of the B.C. Kitefliers Association met in Community Park on the weekend in Parksville under perfect sun and wind conditions. Over her shoulder and 15 metres in the air above Qualicum Beach’s Pep Kay is a kite called Romance, a five-metre-square, plus tail, kite which was made by master kitemaker Art Ross of Vancouver, who died last year. Kay said it was an honour to have one of Ross’s kites here this weekend. All-candidates debate on Thursday in QB
The provincial election campaign hasn’t officially started, but voters in the Parksville Qualicum Beach constituency get an opportunity this week to listen to those who want to be their MLA. The Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with The NEWS, is presenting an all-candidates debate Thursday night (April 4) at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. The attendance of all three declared candidates has been confirmed — Barry Avis of the NDP, David Coupland of the Conservatives and Michelle Stilwell of the Liberals. The debate starts at 7 p.m. and will be moderated by Rev. Phil Spencer of St. Stephen’s United Church. — NEWS Staff
Rock-throwing youth facing charges
Two local youths are facing charges after their idea of a prank went seriously wrong. Oceanside RCMP Const. Monika Terragni said police received a report at 11:40 p.m. on March 29 that several vehicles had their windows smashed by youths throwing rocks on Highway 19 near the French Creek bridge. She said one of the drivers sustained minor facial and neck injuries. He required medical attention from B.C. Ambulance services and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox. Oceanside RCMP, with the assistance of the Police Dog Services were able to track and locate two male youths hiding a short distance away in nearby bushes. Both males were arrested at the scene and released to the care of their parents. Police will be recommending charges of mischief under $5,000. — NEWS Staff

LITTLE MOUNTAIN CLEAN-UP
Jamie doing some guard duty Jamie Black takes the mess at the foot of Little Mountain seriously — to the point where she found herself in a potentially serious pickle when she came across two young men intent on throwing a couch over the cliff. Black, who has spearheaded a regular weekly cleanup of the trash pile at the base, said she was basking in the sun at the top of the cliff at 6 p.m. on March 28 when a black pickup truck pulled into the parking lot and three young men got out. “One guy came to the edge of the cliff and said to me “Hey, we are thinking of tossing a couch over the edge,” she reported. Unfazed, Black made it clear that doing so wasn’t a good idea. “I said ‘Oh, well then I’ll be cleaning it up next week, because I’m not into that at all buddy’.” The three men were undeterred and walked back to their truck, which had an old couch in the back. Black wasn’t about to let them get away with it. “I walked past the front of their truck hoping I could glance at a license plate number, but there wasn’t one on the front,” she said. “Then I hopped in my car. They had to back all the way down to the first driveway, and when they pulled in, they flagged for me to go past. I didn’t.” Instead, Black discretely phoned the police. “I just called 911 discretely on my phone on speaker phone, and kept flagging them to go down first,” she said. “It then became very obvious I was waiting to see their license plate number, so they sped out of that driveway and drove really fast down the windy Little Mountain road, too fast for me to catch

After operating with just three, the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association has a full board of five after their recent AGM. Treasurer Katherine Wilk of Faye’s Gifts said it was a good meeting and they were happy to get some more dedicated volunteers. The new chair is Dianne Martell of Petite Pizzazz, vice chair is Lilo Curt of Fresh n Fabulous Flowers, Dave Wood of Remax Realty is the secretary and BMO’s Kelly Bleu rounds out the full board. Faye McKnight, also of Faye’s
Gifts, will remain on as the past chair. The organization, which Wilk said is a great avenue to help bring and keep shoppers in town, has a paid membership of 60. They have a number of ongoing promotional programs including rack cards distributed through merchants, visitor centres and B.C. Ferries, a radio campaign to promote local activities and merchants, moonlight madness and the uptown summer market. Watch The NEWS for ongoing updates on the association.

Third-most feared disease
A new survey says that the majority of British Columbians are concerned about being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The poll, conducted jointly by Insights West and the Alzheimer Society of B.C., found that some 61 per cent of people living here — including Oceanside residents — are concerned about getting the brain degenerative disease. And 39 per cent of us know someone with Alzheimer’s. Current population statistics show that approximately 1,600 more Qualicum Beach residents will reach age 65 in the next decade, according to current population statistics. “Age is the greatest known risk factor and our baby boomers, the largest demographic group in our population, have now started to enter the 65 plus years,” says Jane Hope, the society’s support and education coordinator for the central Island. “There is still a lot we don’t know about the causes and we don’t have a cure, so it’s not a surprise that Alzheimer’s disease is ranked so high as a health concern.” According to the study, it is the third most feared disease among B.C. residents after cancer (74 per cent) and heart disease (69 per cent). This finding is particularly alarming, she says, since the prevalence of the disease is not as high in B.C. as cancer, heart disease or even diabetes. A more encouraging finding from the survey is that 52 per cent of respondents believe there will be a cure found in the next 10 years. In the meantime, says Hope, there needs to be more awareness and education about the disease. Local families can turn to the Society’s local support and education group, which meets monthly. For more information, contact Hope at 250-734-4170 or jhope@alzheimerbc.org.

The Qualicum Beach Farmers Market doesn’t officially move outdoors for another month, but Qualicum Beach residents will see more of an outside presence from the market starting this week. Market manager Mimi Shewchuk said this past Saturday’s event was the fifth for this year’s spring indoor market and the buy-in from both the public and farmers has been encouraging. “It has been fantastic,” she said. “This year is busier than last year already and as far as vendors go, we have a waiting list to get in.” The indoor venue at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall only has space for 24 vendors, but Shewchuk said the Town of Qualicum Beach this week approved a proposal for overflow businesses to move outdoors, starting next week. Currently there are two booths outdoors, but they are confined to the area by the entrance to the hall. “We will have 10 vendors outside next week, as well as the 24 inside,” she said. “We move outside May 4.” This is the second year for the spring market and Shewchuk said the agricultural community has begun to make changes to take advantage of the opportunity.
NEIL HoRNER pHoTo
Brian Cormie of Cormie Farms is one of the producers who has made a point of having early produce ready to go for the weekly spring market.
“Even our farmers know we have a spring and winter market and we have farmers who have purchased greenhouses so they will have produce to bring,” she said. “It’s pretty early right now to be gardening outside. For instance, Gemini Farms has greenhouses he just purchased for tomatoes and green peppers.” The coming market sea-
son promises to be an active one, Shewchuk said, with at least one special event slated every month. “This year we are going to have lots of events,” she said. “We’ll have some tasting events such as a tomato tasting and another garlic event. As well this year we are going do a baking tasting. Most events are based around the vendors and giving people
access to what they actually make.” She stressed the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market is geared primarily towards agricultural producers and because of this there is a strict limit of 30 per cent for craft booths. The next major event will be held May 4 with the official opening of the outdoor market.

INDEPENDENT LIVING FOR SENIORS
Staying at home for as long as possible ‘I know a little help around the house can make life easier’ AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
The provincial government has selected 11 service providers for their new Better at Home program to assist seniors with non-medical services such as grocery shopping and snow removal and keep them living independently in their own homes. Minister of State for Seniors Ralph Sultan made the announcement at the Society of Organized Services in Parksville Thursday that the SOS would be the local provider of the program administered by the United Way. “One of the things I have heard from B.C. seniors as I have travelled throughout the province, is their desire to live at home, among family and friends, for as long as possible,” Sultan said. Pointing out he is turning 80 in June, he said: “I know that a little help around the house can make life easier, and the Better at Home program re-
flects our commitment to support seniors’ independence by helping them to live in the community of their choice where they can continue to engage with neighbours and friends.” United Way’s B.C. chief operating officer Deborah Irvine said she is excited about the new program and thanked the health authorities for looking for innovative ways to help keep seniors in their homes. “The Better at Home program has been developed with the specific needs of seniors in each community in mind,” said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon, also at the announcement. “For many seniors, assistance with simple tasks such as getting to appointments or tidying up around the house can provide the support they need to remain independent in their own homes.” While the program complements existing support services such as assistance with personal hygiene or medical needs, which are provided through regional health authorities, seniors may be asked to pay a small fee for services based on their income.
AUREN RUVINSKY PHOTO
SOS director Renate Sutherland, left, and United Way COO Deborah Irvine, right, joined Minister of State for Seniors Ralph Sultan in announcing last week in Parksville a new program to help keep seniors at home.
“Parksville is home to a growing population of seniors, and we are pleased to be part of the Better at Home pro-
gram,” said Renate Sutherland, SOS executive director. The program will have $15 million in funding and is called
a key component of B.C.’s Seniors Action Plan. For more information visit www.betterathome.ca

One local landmark that most of us are familiar with is Little Mountain. This steep-sided hunk of limestone rises above the countryside between Parksville and Errington. While the twisting road to the top is well known as an easy way to access spectacular views, comparatively few people are aware of the enjoyable walking trails braiding through second and third growth forests under its spectacular cliff faces. Once parked, (safely and considerately, of course!) walk south through the gate onto a dirt road. After approximately 300 metres you’ll encounter a cut where the hydro lines run approximately east west across your path. The trail leads under the power lines and into the trees. Within 100 metres a trail joins from your right. Remember this junction as you will exit here on your return. For now, though, keep following the trail ahead as it turns into a rutted 4x4 track. There are puddles the full width of the trail, but a look around will show diversions through the bushes to the side, allowing your feet to stay dry. After a couple of kilometres the path narrows and begins to twist through the trees as a rough, rooty quad trail. Keep your eyes open as soon as you see this as you need to turn right at the first single track trailhead on the right. This narrow trail leads gently uphill for around 150 metres, with a “widowmaker” tree to step around, before forking, with the option to the right climbing up a moderately steep bank. Turn left at the top of this and follow the trail as it winds through attractive, open evergreens. Before long the trail loses some height and intersects an old, narrow access road. Turn right and cross a rustic but well-made bridge. The trail rises sharply here and sweeps to the right between impressive boulders, carved from the face of Little Mountain. Head uphill towards the cliffs and you’ll see two contrasting examples of man’s presence. The first, to your left, is tons of garbage dumped off the cliffs when there was easier access from the road. The second is a wonderfully quirky art installation in one of the limestone caves, constructed by one or more creative people who have used discarded bike parts, golf balls, food containers and an ever changing selection of other items. While it’s unfortunate that their medium was available, it’s inspiring to encounter evidence of people motivated to turn a negative situation into something positive. Keep the cliffs to your left now as the trail rises and falls in an eastward direction. Look all around to fully appreciate the scenery. Chemical reaction between rainwater and the rock have left intriguing “bubbles” in the rock faces and hints at their prehistoric, undersea heritage. Looking downhill, you’ll be seeing the car crash set created for the movie “Wrecked”, starring Adrian Brodie. The movie was filmed in 2010 using outdoor sites here and on the Englishman River. It’s worth watching, whether to enjoy Hollywood’s view of an area so close to home or to enjoy the story in its own right. A short downhill brings you to a junction where the main trail intersects your path. Take a look around and get your bearings as you’ll be passing this point on your way back. For now, turn left and head up the narrow, steepening trail between rocks and trees until you pop out on easier, salal covered terrain. There are three options here. The easiest way to minimise risk of taking the wrong trail, though, is to turn left and keep the cliffs on your left side. The surface is extremely slippery in both wet and dry conditions so it’s important to resist the temptation to approach the edge for a peek.

Even cloudy days afford worthwhile views, and a sense of achievement.
Check the forecast and dress for the weather. Avoid cotton and use several thin layers. Remember that most people start hiking and immediately shed several layers as they overheat. Your pack should have room for this, in addition to what you’re already carrying.

here is no shortage of groups who come to municipalities with cap in hand, asking for contributions to their causes. City and town staff, and councillors/ mayors, have a difficult time weighing these requests against their actual return-for-taxpayer bucks. In our estimation, the City of Parksville, Town of Qualicum Beach and Regional District of Nanaimo get off lightly in terms of their contributions to the Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association (PQBTA). There’s no disguising the fact the economic driver of this region is tourism. The entire raison d’être of the PQBTA is to seek, secure and deliver those tourism dollars to the communities it serves from Nanoose Bay to Deep Bay. Those efforts directly translate into healthy businesses, which means jobs for everyone from resort general managers to servers. That, in turn, translates into tax revenue for all levels of governments, which feeds everything from our health-care system to fixing potholes. We understand there is not really any budget wiggle room for municipal governments these days (is there ever?), so it becomes a constant discussion about priorities and return on investment. It would be simple, but irresponsible, for us to suggest adding costs to towns and cities and regional districts. These costs trickle down to residents and businesses, which defeats the purpose. So, the trick for municipal staff and elected officials is to weigh return on investments and make hard decisions about what must hit the cutting room floor. The debate is timely — municipal governments are in the process of finalizing their 2013-14 budgets. We could go line-by-line through expenditures and easily find things to cut that would free up thousands of dollars for groups that would provide real return (PQBTA or the film commission, for example). But it’s our hope, in the next few weeks, municipal staff and elected officials find the courage — political and otherwise — to re-assess the things they have always done, the items they have always funded, and look toward more core causes for the people and financial health of Parksville Qualicum Beach. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters CliniC ConCerns It is sad to hear and read of so many ongoing, diverse and controversial issues being raised relative to the new Oceanside Health Centre, originally scheduled to open in June. In addition to the limitations and now delays, in both the services and hours of operation eventually to be offered, the apparent staffing problems, unanticipated cost increases and the centre’s chosen site location — quite off route and convenient to neither residents of Qualicum Beach or Parksville — it is not at all surprising that many established Oceanside-area physicians, together with, and in support of, their patients, seem to be giving the facility a thumbs down. From its very concept, the general opinion for the health centre put forth at the time was that it could never fill the needs more specific to this area, so highly populated with seniors deserving of a higher standard of medical care and attention. Yet, and notwithstanding public opinion, the facility was given the go ahead anyway — apparently at all costs, even to now requiring another $1 million. Where was forethought? Was it, too, left on the back burner with the taxpayers’ will for a hospital? Whether completed as planned — on schedule or not — a health centre will never eliminate the ongoing medical transportation need for the countless area residents who are required on a regular basis to travel

to medical specialists and hospital facilities available only out of Oceanside. And when a need does arise, necessitating the finding of one’s way to the new centre, when it is eventually up and running, it is hoped that consideration has been given to making it accessible to all area residents, including those who do not drive or are no longer able to drive or who have mobility issues. Has some kind of shuttle service been arranged for residents to access this out-ofthe-way clinic? L. Fischer Parksville
it didn’t hurt me There seems to be a lot of fear amongst the public about the installation of the smart meters on homes. What I fear is I fail to comprehend. I was closely associated to the use of EM while working for mining companies looking for ore anomalies in exploration in the field. First we strung a small copper wire for 12 to 15 miles from a small aircraft at tree top level. One end was connected to a few tin cans buried in a swamp or lake shore. The other end connected to an instrument to emit EM power along the line. Ground-carried instruments were used for two to five miles on either side on lines cut by field operators. Smaller hand-carried instruments were used on the same lines and readings were taken on 100-foot separations.
We were associated in proximity from fixed wing and helicopters dragging a bomb-like instrument behind the aircraft, flying at 50 to 100 feet. Many hours were spent testing and repairing these instruments. At no time were we operators more than 15 feet from these instruments. The only warning given to us was not to have a cheap wristwatch on your arm. A good anti-magnetic watch was never harmed. If we are talking about EM that’s probably a million times stronger than the small amount from a smart meter. On one contract alone we did 150,000 miles of flying, from the Yukon to the U.S./ Mexico border over a two-year period. Most on-the-ground contracts covered many hundreds of miles on snowshoes in winter. So over a period of 20 years that I worked these instruments, I spent many hours using EM. On my present yearly medical I am well above people for my age. My eyesight is normal and I still make a trip to the bathroom daily, so the only reason for my demise will be either natural causes or a jealous husband. I still enjoy the finer points of life, be it wine, women or song. By the way, on my next birthday I will be 90 years old.

I have similar concerns about free roaming cats, as has letter writer, Dianne Ackerman (The NEWS, March 28). I recently pointed out in a letter to Qualicum Beach town council and staff that our animal control bylaws pertain to cats, as well as dogs. Letting a cat run loose on town property or outside the owner’s property is in contravention of bylaw 649. It is also in contravention of the provincial wildlife act to let cats run loose where wildlife is present (79.3). Which gets me to my main concern: the predation by domestic cats on birds and other creatures on my and public property. North American wide it is estimated that tens of millions of birds, reptiles and other creatures are slaughtered by free roaming domestic cats. I have suggested that the town of Qualicum Beach, at the very least, provide some education and promotion around this bylaw and then enforce it with financial penalties. Residents of Qualicum and Parksville should write their town councils and let them know we are fed up with free roaming cats owned by self-indulgent cat owners who have no regard for the impact their cats have on local wildlife ecology. In the case of Parksville, their outdated bylaws (1992) only mention dogs, as far as I can determine. There simply is no real animal control bylaws for all domestic animals there, as there is in Qualicum Beach. Parksville residents need to put pressure on their town council. I regularly see free roaming cats, owned by residents across the street from the Marshall-Stevens Bird Sanctuary, running home with birds in their mouths. To those selfish cat owners who let their cats run loose crapping in our gardens and killing everything their cats can get their claws into, where is your sense of personal responsibility? Gordon Browne Qualicum Beach
keep Cats at home I totally agree with Dianne Ackerman’s letter in the March 28 edition of your paper, (Pick Up After Kitty). We came home after two months away to find countless deposits of kitty poo in our yard. I cover my flower and garden beds with plastic netting and that keeps them out of those areas. However, the cats then used the crush stone area beside our house as their private bathroom. Over 30 piles of poo to clean up. That is not a pleasant task, especially when one doesn’t own a cat. We are surrounded by cats, at least six in the houses around us. On any given day, we can see one or more of these cats roaming the neighborhood, walking on and jumping the fences. It is time that our council stepped up to the plate and did something about this problem. Other communities are doing this. There have been countless letters to the editor about this over the years, along with numerous articles in various publications addressing the issue of cats roaming free, and the growing population of feral cats. I will be writing to the mayor and council about this and, like Dianne stated in her letter, urge those who experience this problem to do the same.
It might be worthwhile to go and have coffee with the mayor and council on Thursdays and raise the issue with them. Perhaps we may have to band together and attend some council meetings as a group to put forth a unified voice on the issue. In the mean time, it would be greatly appreciated if cat owners kept their pets at home. BoB Larson Parksville
iLL-informed opinions Re: ‘Not easy prey’, Sheri Farinha’s anti-tanker letter to the editor in the March 28 edition of The NEWS. The letter reminded me of a radio program I had listened to a few days earlier. Art Sterritt, executive director of the Coastal First Nations, was talking to Bill Good on CKNW about his television commercial The Sound Of Silence, released on the 24th Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez grounding on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska. No doubt Sterritt would have been delighted to read Farinah’s letter, as he declared in no uncertain terms that no advancement in tanker design, nor oil-spill clean-up technology, during the past 24 years would ever sway him to accept tankers on the coast. The callers to the radio program seemed just as hard-headed and ill-informed; one even suggesting that the tankers should go to Alberta to load. I guess the media types are guarding a closely-kept secret about the development of that highly-sensitive Rocky Mountain ship canal, eh? I retired as Shipmaster after more than a quarter century at sea, and my wife sailed for 14 years, on all types of ocean-going vessels, including supertankers. This was way before the mandatory double-hulled tankers. Of course, all current navigational equipment, communications systems, etc., on both ship and shore are far superior to what we had to contend with. Yet, the inconvenient truth is we never experienced a single oil spill during our combined 40 years of world-wide sea-service. We strongly believe that many British Columbians have been wrongfully browbeaten into accepting that an oil spill is inevitable. Bernie smith Parksville
mining seCtor vitaL If you need a job you will want to vote for mining and exploration in BC. The mining industry directly employs over 9,300 people across every region of the province and indirectly provides employment for another 37,000 people. The mining industry also has one of the highest average annual salaries in Canada. In the coal sector, which provides over 26,000 direct mining and indirect BC jobs, the average yearly wage for workers is $95,174. Over the next 10 years, it is estimated that the B.C. mining industry will need more than 17,000 new workers with a wide range of skills. But these new jobs, including 4,000 mineral exploration jobs, will only become a reality if we elect candidates who will support the continued growth of our resource sectors. That’s why I urge everyone to become informed before they cast their vote by visiting www.votemining.ca, because mining and exploration are vital. michaeL tayLor Coquitlam

And I’m not sure about the universe. — Albert Einstein I’m not sure about the universe either, but I feel pretty confident in saying there’s an infinity of stupidity right here on this celestial orb called earth. A body doesn’t have to look hard or far to find examples. Donald Trump for example. Can anyone explain why this buffoon-cum-blowhard with the improbably cantilevered orange coiffure is famous? Not for his financial acumen. He’s been bankrupt more often than Greece. Not for his charm. He has all the wit and grace of an NHL goon. And not for his thick skin. He recently announced that he was suing comedian Bill Maher for suggesting that Trump was the ‘spawn of an orangutan’.

lefebvre looks to New York for inspiration NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
Marc Lefebvre is inspired by the mayor of New York City and he wants to look at possibly following his example. The Parksville city councillor and Regional District of Nanaimo director made the comments in light of a report to the RDN board Tuesday night by Central Island Medical Health Officer Paul Hasselback. Lefebvre focused in on Hasselback’s linkage of healthy eating choices to overal health outcomes, noting in particular the causal relationshnip between consuming large amounts of fizzy sugar drinks and the current epidemic of obesity in the United States. “Recently the mayor of New York wanted to ban large soft drinks, but it was overturned by the courts,” Lefebvre said. “One of the things he did do though is to force fast-food outlets to produce the calorie and sugar contents in their menus in their restaurants. Given the importance of diet, is there anything more we can do to let people know what they are eating if they have a giant burger?” In reply, Hasselback said he doubted a jumbo soft drink ban would fly in the RDN, but said there are likely some steps that can be taken to encourage healthier choices. “There are things we can look at,” he said. “In B.C. currently the program that is in place is all voluntary and there is an encouragment to make some of that more mandatory. Moving to make it a requirement might be something we could consider.” Hasselback noted that New York City also led the charge in the elimination of trans fats and in the reduction of salt. “Much of the change in dietary action imposed at a societal level is being led by New York,” he said. “I would be happy to discuss this further.”

What’s with the Brant anyway?
neil Horner pHoto
Whether you’re a bird watcher, a fish fancier or a music lover, there’s lots to do at Brantfest.
Brant Festival
Lots to see and do NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
The herring boats may be back at the dock for another season, but that doesn’t mean the herring are gone — or the brant geese that feed on their eggs. Because of this, the Brant Festival is continuing for the month of April, with a strong lineup of events to highlight the bounty of nature. First up is a free guided tour of the Marion Baker Fish Hatchery on Miller Road, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both April 5 and April 6. For those with a taste for the wonders of the sky rather than the water, Saturday, April 6 will also feature an eagle release at the North Island Recovery Centre. The event, which will allow visitors to witness glove-trained birds along with many wild-
life and environmental booths, kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. Entry is by donation. The music of birdsong may be very nice, but those with a taste for more syncopated rhythms can enjoy a musical performance by the Candando Chamber Singers on Saturday, April 13 at Knox United Church. The Spring Beauties concert kicks off at 2 p.m. The cost is $10 at the door. The musical celebration of spring continues on Thursday, April 18 with Voices of Nature, a concert featuring Holly Arntzen and Kevin Wright at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. The concert will also feature singers from both Bowser and Arrowview Elementary schools. Tickets for $12 each can be purchsed at both elementary schools as well as Mulberty Bush Bookstores in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
They may not have the majesty or ripping talons of a bald eagle, or the wingspan of a condor — or even the brilliant colours of a hummingbird, but the little black Brant geese have come to symbolize the beauty and fragility of nature — at least in the central Island. The geese nest in the Arctic over the summer months and migrate to Mexico for the winter. On the way they make a pitstop on the east coast of Vancouver Island, their arrival timed to coincide with the annual herring spawn.
There’s a good reason for that. In order to make the second leg of their journey, they need to store up as much energy as they can by gorging on herring roe. Their arrival marks the true advent of spring, with all its remarkable coastal abundance of fish, fowl and marine mammals that flock to the area to feed on the annual bounty. They may not look like much, but to many, they symbolize all of what people hold near and dear about this area. — Neil Horner

It was a night of fashion and fun March 10 at the Qualicum Beach Pharmasave for a special ladies night. The store carries a line of clothes made in Canada that were modeled by employees of the store. As well as the fashion show, there were makeovers, hand treatments, body massages and other esthetic treatments. It has already been a year since Dolly’s Home Hardware moved to the spacious new store at 169 West 2nd Avenue in Qualicum Beach. To mark the occasion on March 23 and thank their loyal customers, owners Bryan and Liz Virgin blew up balloons, served refreshments and had several draws for some great prizes. Want to buy some great pies and perogies? The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary the Protectress on Karls Way in Columbia Beach sells tasty items regularly to raise funds. Members of the church held a pie festival on March 23 where they sold delicious home made pies, bread and perogies. The members have regular work bees so they can sell pies and perogies year round. They also hold community perogy dinners at St. Stephen’s church in Parksville. Over 300 people turned out for last December’s perogy dinner. The next perogy dinner is being held May 10. Call 250-248-8450 or visit www.vanisleparochial.ca for the exact date and time. There are still plenty of Brant Festival events going on around the Oceanside area. On April 6 the much anticipated eagle release takes place at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRC) in Errington. The centre will be open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and there will be a wide variety of family oriented activities taking place that day. Make sure you say hello to Emily and Bardo the glove trained birds and don’t miss the eagle release at 2 p.m. Entrance is by donation that day. There is a free tour of the Marion Baker Fish Hatchery in French Creek on April 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On April 21 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. there is a Hamilton Marsh tour. The event is by donation. If you are looking for a fun night of dancing and fitness the SOS in Parksville is the place to go Wednesday nights. Elaine De Rooy is the facilitator of the beginner belly dance class which runs every Wednesday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. If needed babysitting is provided on site. Elaine is also preparing some of her students for a shimmy mob in Nanaimo on May 11. The largest belly dance flash mob will be held in several locations world wide. Times are still being finalized for the Nanaimo event. The aim of the global event is to create awareness and to fundraise for shelters for women and children who are victims of abuse. Elaine will be teaching choreography to students who want to participate. For details visit www.shimmymob.com or leave a message for Elaine on Facebook. The warm spring weather last week brought out the first lemonade stand of the year at Nicholls Park on Pym Street. Some kids from the neighborhood spent a few hours in the glorious sunshine raising money for BC Children’s Hospital.
Jennifer Spratt cosmetic manager of the Qualicum Beach Pharmasave expertly applied some make up to Dorothy Roberts at a ladies night event March 10.
Bryan and Liz Virgin of Dolly’s Home Hardware in Qualicum Beach celebrated their one year anniversary March 23 at their new location on West 2nd Avenue.
Bill Schoonderbeek (left) who lives in Columbia Beach didn’t realize the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary the Protectress had some of the best baking in his neighbourhood. He was thrilled to meet Parish Priest Reverend Peter Haugen and purchase some treats.
Robin Rivers of the Nature Trust (centre) enjoyed getting up close and personal with the NIWRC’s Kathleen Tolley and Emily, the Saker falcon and Ross Peterson with Bardo the owl at the Brant Festival Community Celebration at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre March 22.
Belly dance instructor Elaine De Rooy and belly dance enthusiast Sandi Nielsen of Our Glass Shop in Parksville like to shake things up at the weekly drop-in classes at the SOS Wednesday nights.
This group of youngsters set up a lemonade stand at Nicholls Park March 28. Sales were brisk for seven year old Lilly Boorman (left), her nine year old sister Delaney, eight year old Guiann Ocampa and her 10 year old brother Gio (right).

Turning famous ties into help for Africa LISSA ALEXANDER

LISSA ALEXANDER PHOtO
Oceanside Grandmothers to Grandmothers Diane tobin and Pam Vest hold up some of their celebrity-ties-turned-evening-bags which will go on an online auction April 4-25.
Bid on a tie from celebrities like Don Cherry, David Suzuki and George Stroumboulopoulos, which have been turned into an evening bag, and you’ll be helping those affected with HIV/ AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. It’s a project of the Oceanside Grandmothers to Grandmothers (G2G) where people can bid online for the ties and then attend a Closing Bid Reception to see how it all turns out. The local ladies said they weren’t sure how successful it would be when they started sending out letters to the celebrities. “I had no idea when I sent the letters out if I’d get two or 20,” said G2G member Diane Tobin, who made all of the bags. In the end, 32 donors responded sending ties, many of them signed, as well as some other items. To bid on the ties and bags, go to
www.oceansideg2g.charitybids.org. Tobin upcycled the ties into 24 evening bags and 15 of them were simply not fit for a bag, she said. “The intent was to get the ties and then sew them all into evening bags and the first tie I received was from George (Stroumboulopoulos) and it was a very expensive, long and narrow tie, and I went, it’ll never happen!” she laughed. He also signed the back with “You are so lovely” and his very long name, so Tobin and the other Grandmothers thought it would be better off leaving it as a tie. Some others were signed or had messages so they left those ones unaltered as well. Tobin said she sent a letter to David Chilton, from CBC’s The Dragon’s Den, before watching him on an episode of the show. See HOWIE MEEKER, page A31

Air, slopestyle and hitting the rails Parksville snowboarder among the best in recent Mount Washington competition BRENDA GOUGH NEWS Contributor
Mount Washington hosted a Spring Rail Jam March 30 and Parksville’s Jacqueline Monette-Warren got to show off her jibbing skills on a coarse that was jam packed with features. The local snowboarder is in the competitive program with the Vancouver Island Riders and has spent a good part of the winter being coached by the pros in the disciplines of slopestyle, big air and rails. This past weekend she and her VI Riders teammates put on a great show and demonstrated what they have been learning all season. The spring park was sculpted right in front of the alpine lodge so spectators could see all of the action including the bag of tricks that generated Monette-Warren the title of “Best Girl Run Overall” at the competition Saturday. Monette-Warren has been a member of the freestyle snowboard training club for two years now and when the grade 10 Ballenas student isn’t working towards her school credits, she is on the slopes hitting jumps and perfecting her tricks. Catacomb video bucks the trend
New Qualicum Beach video store opens while most others are closing or struggling NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
“Oh, so you like B movies? Well I have just the thing for you.” That’s Trevor Fielding, one of the two principles with Catacomb Video in Qualicum Beach. He does, too. Fielding races down an aisle of the Memorial Avenue video store and seconds later comes back with a title called The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. The lurid cover certainly seems like a B movie, but Fielding knows his stuff and he confirms it. “They must have had a production budget of about 100 bucks,” he said. “It’s a takeoff on the B movie genre. Very funny.” He’s right. It’s very funny. Just the ticket. Fielding and his partner Kate Scorah take pride in knowing about movies and being able to suggest the perfect title. They opened their store just three months ago after being forced to move from their previous French Creek location because the building that housed their store was being demolished. They opened shop just over three months ago. However, they’ve not only been able to hold onto much of their French Creek business, but they’ve started to round up a lot of movie fans in Qualicum Beach as well. The recipe to Catacomb’s success in the face of video stores going belly up across the rest of the country, is one part obscurity and two parts selection. “Many video stores are checking out and aren’t putting any money in,” said Scorah. “We thought if we are going to survive in the future, we have to pour money into our library. People can get new releases anywhere these days, but there are some movies that are obscure and hard to find. You can’t just download them anywhere. We are trying to set ourselves apart in areas where netflicks and Shaw are not going to be able to help you.” True, Catacomb has all the new releases and Blu Ray options, but along with Zero Dark 30 they carry titles such as I Eat Your Skin and This is Spinal Tap. “Spinal Tap came from our personal collection long before we opened the store,” Fielding said. “We like to think we have a pretty deep library. We have some titles you wouldn’t find anywhere else — obscure ones.” The couple have always been fans of movies and both worked in various video outlets prior to going it alone in French Creek three years ago. That expe-

rience has exposed them to more titles than many might believe possible. “Even if we haven’t seen a movie, chances are we’ve at least seen the cover and can picture it,” Fielding said. “We had a huge collection ourselves as well and it seemed inevitable we would one day own a video store.” They are not only familiar with obscure works by obscure directors, but also obscure movies by world famous directors. “If you thought Peter Jackson was over the top with Lord of the Rings, he did some really weird stuff before that. Meet the Feebles is offensive to so many
senses,” Scorah said. And their latest find? “We just got one in called Cemetery Man, an Italian production. Very bizarre. He lives in a cemetery where all the bodies come back to life and he’s sick of it. All he does is kill zombies and he wants a raise because he’s bored,” Fielding said. Catacomb also specializes in old titles that, while they may not be must-have classics, likely have some meaning to some people of a certain age. “There was a lack of movies older than 1965,” he said. “We’ve made an effort to bring in golden age titles.” Catacomb is open every day except Christmas.

World wide ambition for local boarder continued from page a33
For those not familiar with slopestyle, it is all about creativity. An athlete jumps down a run where there is a combination of jumps and rail features they slide across. Back on March 16 at the Dakine Slopestyle competition at Mount Washington Monette-Warren won first place in the 14 to 17 age category. Linden Ruecker one of the VI Riders coaches who works with Monette-Warren said he is not surprised the young athlete made it to the podium. “She is doing really well. We have always seen high determination in her.
Her skills have really improved … especially in the last year.” He said making it to the podium at the different provincial slopestyle competitions isn’t easy because she has to compete against women twice her age. “It is substantially difficult for young girls. Frequently she competes against women 10 to 15 years older than her,” Rueker explained. He pointed to an event at Sun Peaks this season where she got second as an example of what her competition consists of. “She competed against fully sponsored 30 year olds from Japan. She was the youngest competitor in that com-
petition.” Monett-Warren is thrilled to be sponsored by Alternative Groove in Nanaimo and she said once the season winds down she may take up skateboarding to help with her cross training because her goal is to win medals at the highest level of competition. “I would like to compete worldwide and possibly in the Olympics or X Games,” she admitted. Her coach said as long as she pushes herself he can see that in her future. “I think with Jacqui her determination is pushing her. With her progression one day she will be in the X Games or the Olympics if that is her direction.”
There is another rail jam competition at Mount Washington on April 6 and once again spectators will get to see Monett-Warren throw down some of her best tricks. “I like the rails. I will pull out all my tricks for sure … my coach doesn’t like to me play it safe and I do better in competitions when I push myself.” For those who still have lift passes to use up, April 14 is when full winter operations at Mount Washington wind down. Your last chance to make some turns in the snow will be on April 20 and 21 for an extended weekend only operation.

CHRISTOPHER KEITH PARKER Sept. 2, 1981 – March 25, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved only son, husband and friend, Christopher Keith Parker (known to his many friends as Parker) on Monday, March 25th, 2013 at Langley Memorial Hospital after a two‐year battle with cancer. Chris, today our sorrow is overwhelming, but we do not mourn without hope. We pray that we might know the peace of God’s presence and comfort as much as you do right now. Chris was an amazing person, his zest for life was infectious and he lived every moment to its fullest. He fought such a brave battle with cancer. He always had a positive attitude and never let anything get him down. He was passionate about hockey and his Vancouver Canucks. He shared a passion for racecars with many friends and was often found on the racetrack with his headphones and mike. Chris and Lisa enjoyed boating together with her family. Chris loved to be on the golf course and shared this passion with friends and family. Chris loved everything life had to offer. Lisa was the love of Chris’s life, his best friend and soul mate. They shared 5 wonderful years together as a couple but friends for 12. She was truly Chris’s rock and she was beside him every step of the way through his fight. Time didn’t allow Chris and Lisa to have children of their own so their little dog Zoey was truly his baby. Chris’s favorite saying was “get er done” and he had such a gift for applying a personal touch to whatever he was involved in. Chris touched the lives of so many people in his short time and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his Mother Linda Zimbalatti, 2nd Dad Joe Zimbalatti, Father Fudd Parker, Wife Lisa Butler and all her family. His Nanny & Grandad Carol & Al Turriff, Grandma Grace Parker, Uncle Lindsay (Jean), Aunt Susan (Gary) Uncles Cal & Daryle , Auntie Jill (2nd Mom) cousins (Alex, Ryan, Jeff, Courtnee, Marty, Karen, Elizabeth and Carol‐Ann) , niece and nephew Kylie (Chris’s Angel) and Kayden and all his extended family in Toronto.

Royals up and running into season
Parksville team host pre-season games over weekend under warm blue skies JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
Parksville’s Quality Foods Royals took to the field for their first pre-season home games on the weekend as they hosted the Nanaimo Pirates on Saturday and the Victoria Eagles Sunday. Both days were unseasonably sunny and warm, and the players clearly in their element. “It was good to get out there,” Royals’ perennial skipper Dave Wallace confirmed Sunday night after the dust had settled. The Royals opened their 2013 preseason the weekend prior in Victoria against the Eagles. As always, the emphasis on preseason is on the process, not on the scores. “We change things around a bit,” said Wallace. “They’re not always regular games per say, they’re more scrimmages than anything else and the emphasis is on getting pitchers on the mound and the players in their positions to see how they react, how they respond in game situations.” On Sunday against the Eagles the two teams played a 14 inning scrimmage instead of a double header. For those following along at home, the Royals will have a roster of 20 players this year — two less then the league max of 22 and five more than last year — including

five Oceanside players: catcher Mackenzie Parlow, along with Grade 12 players shortstop Justin Dieleman and pitcher Nic Annau, Grade 11 infielder/outfielder Andrew Evernden, and ‘the Coombs Comet’ Grade 10 infielder/pitcher Liam Ballance. Wallace says the Eagles are expected to be one of the BCPBL frontrunners this season, with a number of standouts, including a 6’5” Grade 11 southpaw on the junior jational team who Ballance tagged for a standup double Sunday.
Leading the charge for the Royals in hitting on the weekend were two new outfielders: Cam Forbes, a Grade 12 player who makes the commute from White Rock, and Grade 11 Alex Hendra-Brown, a transfer from the Victoria Eagles who Wallace says “is a big strong kid who runs well. He hit a towering long home run against Nanaimo, had a couple of other hits as well and stole some bases.” “Both those guys had some good hits on the weekend and they’re going to con-
tribute to the Royals this year in a big way,” said Wallace, adding: “We’ve got a lot of young guys on the team this year,” pointing out that with eight Grade 10 players on the roster this season “we’ll probably be one of the youngest teams in the league, but we’ve got a good core group of senior players too, and that’s one of the reasons we’ve kept 20 players. We’ve got an enthusiastic group of Grade 10s, and they’ll face some challenges this year, but they’ll benefit in the long run.” See BCPBL, page A40

Highlanders hoist cup in their first season JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
The U21 Mid-Isle Highlanders hoisted the George Smith Cup after winning the Island championship in exciting fashion — a 3-2 final over Victoria’s Westcastle FC that took double overtime to decide — and the team’s Oceanside connection certainly helped the cause. The Ladysmith-based squad, comprised of players from Duncan to Qualicum Beach, was led by longtime local soccer coach and BSS teacher Larry Stefanek and peniclled in three local players — midfielder/forward Darien Atkinson, middy Cole Senchar (the youngest player on the team at 15) and defender Evan Stefanek. According to Stefanek, the U21 Highlanders were created in part to give first-year Vancouver Island University recruits a place to play. “That was one of the reasons,” said Stefanek. “The other is it’s hopefully going to become the team to play for — the prominent program for the top young players in our region to play on in the winter.” It is also a feeder program for the Mid-Isle Highlanders spring/summer U21 Highlanders who play in the Pacific Coast Soccer League (also coached by Stefanek and managed by VIU Mens head coach Bill Merriman from Cedar) . The Island final, played out Sunday, March 24 in Victoria at Royal Athletic Park. The weather was good, but the field said Stefanek, “was really bumpy,” and “was a shootout in the first half — four goals in the first half hour,” Stefanek said of the match, which was tied 2-2 at the half which is how it remained for the next 90 minutes until Connor Wil-

liams from Cowichan scored the winner off a free kick. “Great feeling — the boys were excited,” confirmed Stefanek. This was the U21 Highlanders inaugural season in the VISL and the team, said their coach, “had a phenomenal season. They worked hard they love to play the game they have a passion for the game which is a huge thing. Great group of kids.” Mid-Isle won the eight-team VISLU21 league’s regular season with a record of 12-2 then rolled through the
George Smith Cup playoffs, beating Bays United 3-1 in the quarterfinals and the Saanich Fusion 2-1 in overtime in the semis. GAME ON: The Highlanders and four other Island teams now advance to Provincial Cup play — a 16-team single knockout format played out over the next five weeks at different locations. As Island champs, the Highlanders host their opening round match April 13 or 14 against an opponent to be named this week, most likely at the Ladysmith turf fields.

Club of the year: Parksville From the desk of Carol Bucyk comes word the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club was recently recognized for its efforts in the community when it received the Club of the Year award for 2013 from Bowls BC for the North Vancouver Island and Powell River Zone. The clubs in this group include Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Powell River and PLBC. According to Bucyk, the local club, with 190+ members, was recognized for the work that it does with residents of Stanford Place, as well as other local organizations. It is also active in working with other lawn
bowling clubs in the districts, with the aim of growing the sport in Oceanside and beyond. The club has activities throughout the year with lawn bowling happening during the spring and summer months, and then hosting cribbage, bridge, darts and short mat during the winter. “For over 17 years, PLBC has been a part of Parksville’s sporting community, hosting a variety of tournaments and special events.” PLBC will be hosting its annual garage sale April 13, and Open House on April 19-20 and Bucyk and company “invites the public to come and see what the club is all about.” — James Clarke
Beach volleyball coming soon
Sure sign the fun-in-the-sun season is approaching
A reminder to local beach volleyball players the season’s first session of league play is fast approaching, and with a cap on the amount of teams it’s best to get in on the early registraion. Played at the Parksville Community Park sand courts, the adult co-ed triples league runs Wednesdays from 6:30 - 9 p.m. (ish) starting May 8. The league runs for eight weeks and cost is $50 per person. As always the adult session is fol-
lowed by a social at the Rod andGun. “We already have close to 40 teams registered without our annual e-mail sent out so do not wait to register,” said longtime local beach booster and decorated VIU Women’s volleyball coach Shane Hyde. For those players looking for a pre-season tuneup, there is a skills clinic slated for the beach courts at Parksville Community Park Sunday May 5th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for a cost of $30.
The youth league gets underway May 7 at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a youth doubles division for athletes aged 12-18. Cost is $60 per person. Both leagues had over 70 teams for the 4th year in a row last year, and as such “we had a wait-list and were forced to send teams away, so register early,” said Hyde. New local forward
Affiliate player Brodie Smith commits to the Oceanside Generals for 2013-14 season JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
On the heels of signing their head coach and GM to another season, the Save-OnFoods Oceanside Generals have signed local 15-year-old forward Brodie Smith for the 2013-2014 season. An Oceanside Minor Hockey product, Smith played last season for the South Island Royals of the B.C. Major Midget League. The 5’9,” 155 pound forward compiled seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 35 games. “We are very excited that Brodie has decided to play for the Generals next season,” said Gens’ bench boss Brent Demerais. “We have gotten to know him well this (past) season, as he has played as an affiliate player for us and we had a chance to watch him play for the Royals.” “He is a highly-skilled player, who competes hard every shift. He plays a complete game and has an extremely bright future in the VIJHL and beyond,” said Demerais. “Brodie is a gifted young man who sees the ice really well, has a BCHL-calibre skating stride and shot (and) he is going to fit very well into the culture we have here. We are very proud to add another young local player to our fold...we’re thrilled to have him on the team.” Heading into his Grade 10 year at BSS, Smith has returned home after two years going to school in Victoria; the first year playing Bantam Rep for Racquet Club then last season attending Lambrick Park Secondary School while playing Major Midget. “It’s always good to come back to your home town,” he said when asked about his commitment to the Generals. “If I don’t end up making the higher levels it’s a good backup plan to come on and play with the older guys.” Smith says his plan for next year is to try and get on with a junior A team “but if that doesn’t end up working out I’ll definitely come here and have a good solid season with the Generals.” Smith lists the Chicago Blackhawks his favourite NHL team and Jarome Iginla and Jonathan Toews his favourite players. The youngest of two — his older sister is in her senior year at BSS — Smith is also a listed (protected) player with the WHL Victoria Royals and will be attending their camp in

August. As for the obvious size transition awaiting young Mr. Smith next season, the prospect of playing against players bigger and faster doesn’t phase him. “Not at all. I love that stuff...bring it on,” he said. “It is a big jump but in Brodie’s case it just might be a case of you can’t hit what you can’t catch,” chuckled Demerais.
