In mid-June of last year, during a vacation in Mexico, Jasper Moedt awoke at sunrise and tiptoed up the stairs to the roof of his hotel. It was clear and sunny, with just a hint of a breeze. The 22-year-old was in his swimming trunks, and the rooftop hot tub bubbled invitingly. But he walked past and hoisted his 6’7” frame onto the cement wall bordering the roof. His feet were longer than the wall was wide, and his toes curled over the edge. Three storeys below, people were on the sidewalk. They didn’t seem to notice him.
He was seriously considering stepping off. For the better part of three months, his emotional state had swung from crippling depression to exhilarating euphoria. He couldn’t understand what was wrong, nor could he bring himself to share it with anyone. They’d think he was crazy. That he was even up on the ledge was a surprise to him, given his fear of heights. But the struggle for equilibrium had worn him down and had given way to utter hopelessness. A small gust of wind blew. Maybe if it blew hard enough, he thought, it would make the decision for me. He lingered on the edge for maybe five min-
utes, but it felt like an hour. He was sweating, even though it wasn’t hot enough for that yet. His hands shook, then his body began to shudder. It wasn’t until he heard a young couple making their way up the stairs that he snapped out of his reverie and stepped back to safety. ❑ ❑ ❑ Moedt was the kind of bright kid who could almost make you buy into the notion of youthful invincibility. An imposing presence at 6’7”, 240 pounds, he was a friendly giant – gregarious, articulate, easy-smiling, easygoing. Continued on A4

The Vancouver Canucks confirmed Monday that they’ve purchased the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League. News of the deal between Canucks Sports & Entertainment and the St. Louis Blues, previous owners of the Rivermen, broke on the weekend, initially reported by the Peoria Journal Star. “This is an exciting opportunity for the Canucks,” owner/ chairman Francesco Aquilini stated in a press release. “The purchase of the Peoria franchise allows us to take an important step and assume full control of our minor league development program.” The deal is subject to approval by the AHL, and the Canucks press release indicated the team will not have further comment at this time, out of respect for the approval process. There’s much speculation that the Canucks could station their AHL team in Abbotsford, replacing the Calgary Flames-affiliated Heat, who have played out of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre the past four seasons, during which the team struggled to fill enough seats to be profitable. Under a 10-year agreement, the Heat are guaranteed $5.4 million annually, with the city making up any deficit. That has cost local taxpayers $3.58 milliion so far. Rumours bubbled to the surface in late February that Utica, N.Y. could be a potential landing spot for the Heat should the Flames choose to move them. The Canucks’ twoyear affiliation agreement with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves expires at the end of this season, and the Wolves would be a potential partner for the Blues as they search for an AHL team to link up with for 2013-14.

Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong said when the “long talked about” overpass becomes a reality in the next few years, traffic backup in the area will no longer occur. The large sign at the MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) Furniture & More store at 31877 South Fraser Way clearly lists the hours that donated items can be dropped off. It also states that they should be left at the MCC Plaza across the street. But every weekend, staff return to the furniture store on Monday morning to find a pile of items – such as beds,

couches, toys and clothing – left outside the building. Store manager Bob Dyck said the problem is that most of the objects have to be thrown out because staff and volunteers do not know their history or because they are not saleable. This results in extra disposal costs for the charity – for example, $8 per mattress or box spring. An on-site container where unusable items are deposited costs $350 a week to empty.
Deb Lowell of the Salvation Army said that agency sometimes faces the same issues at its thrift store on Gladys Avenue. She said some people drop off junk items after hours because they do not want to pay the disposal costs themselves. Dyck and Lowell encourage the public to drop off items only during the listed hours, so that a receiver can ensure they are suitable to sell. Both locations are closed for drop-offs on Sundays.

Firefighters battled a blaze in a home on Bevan Crescent on Sunday afternoon. The fire, which is still under investigation, caused extensive damage. There were no injuries.
Association fined for not having lottery licence

An Abbotsford soccer club is refunding ticket sales for its annual lottery, but states that returning the money will be a “challenge.” A statement by the association’s president John Werrell was posted on the club’s website last week, stating that the board of directors had announced the postponement of the annual lottery due to a licensing issue. A second post explains how those who have purchased tickets can be refunded, but adds the “refund process will be a challenge with so many tickets being sold and with varying degrees of information on the ticket stubs.” The statement, on the association’s website marinersfc. ca, indicates that those who bought tickets can email MFMFCLotteryInfo@ shaw.ca to arrange for a refund. The money return
comes in the wake of a complaint filed to the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch of the B.C. government against the association, which runs a yearly raffle for a vehicle donated by an Abbotsford dealer. The association formed a partnership with the dealership in 2011, and is now known as the Magnuson Ford Mariners FC (MFMFC). The gaming commission refers issues to police for review or investigation when there is a possibility the circumstances fall under the Criminal Code. A spokesperson for the government agency confirmed the matter was referred to the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) following their investigation into the complaint. Sgt. Elly Wright, a spokesperson for the APD, said a fine of $500 for running a raffle without a licence was issued, and the file is now closed. The online post from the association states
the board is “working with the gaming commission to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” and that “according to the policies of the gaming commission and an unknown timeline regarding the resolution of this issue, we are obliged to refund all monies taken in while tickets were being sold.” Dan Village, the vice-president technical of the association, said the issue arose from a wrong licence number being issued on the tickets. “The gaming commission has told us to pull all the tickets back and return all the money to the people because there is an incorrect number on our tickets.” A spokesperson for the commission said the soccer club did not apply for a permit for the lottery. Village said the draw, which was supposed to take place on March 2, is postponed until the tickets are returned and the association can apply
for another licence. Village said the lottery had generated about $12,000. Last year, they realized about $17,500 from the raffle. “This is a big deal to us. We’ve got a big name community sponsor on it. It’s a nice fundraiser for us and it’s something we rely on to keep youth soccer happening here in Abbotsford. It’s an important thing for us and we’d like to do it correctly,” he said. Village said the issue seems to be an administrative error. Former MFMFC general manager Brad Nicholl recently resigned from his position. He declined to comment on the matter, although he stated it had nothing to do with his resignation. The soccer association has about 1,600 to 1,700 players, on teams ranging from ages five to 15. The association is part of the Fraser Valley Youth Soccer Association.

Vimy Ridge ceremony A candlelight parade and vigil to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge takes place in Abbotsford on Tuesday, April 9. The event, sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Abbotsford cenotaph in Thunderbird Square on Veterans Way. The annual parade involves veterans, soldiers, cadets, police, firefighters and sheriffs. Candles will be placed in memory of those who served in Vimy Ridge. The band of the 861 Silverfox air cadet squadron will provide music. The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place in France from April 9 to 12, 1917. It was the first battle that was carried out by all Canadian units under Canadian command, which were victorious against three divisions of the German Sixth Army. There were 10,500 Canadian casualties in the four days of fighting; 1,300 died at Vimy.

Grads given the gift of a gown Program assists students who cannot afford the costs of going to prom

With the graduation season approaching, Talia’s Closet is looking for assistance to help get students to prom. Talia’s Closet, a program operated by the Youth Resource Centre (YRC) and Abbotsford Community Services (ACS), collects dresses and tuxedos from donors in the community and then provides the outfits to grads who don’t have the financial resources or family to purchase their graduation outfit. The program is looking for donations of dresses, jewelry, clutches and shoes. The YRC will be setting up a space at the Sevenoaks Shopping
Centre from April 5 to April 14 near the food court. They will collect clothing donations, but are also looking for community members to donate their time to do makeup or hair during the graduation season. “We are getting lots of calls already from grads to come and look at dresses that we have,” said Tally Clement, a street outreach worker in the YRC. “But we need more and newer outfits. Dresses donated three years ago might be out of style this year and for girls, it is so important to fit in, to look right.” Talia’s Closet has relied on the generosity of donations, not only for the students, but for the space that they have operated out of since starting the program three years ago.
“People have been really generous with dresses and people have been really generous with space,” said Simone Maassen, supervisor at ACS. She said the program will also accept financial contributions, which would provide more freedom to cover extra costs of operation. The program was started by Linda Hamilton, with just 12 dresses. It has since grown to about 100 gowns, in a variety of sizes. The program is free, and the organization works with local high school counsellors to find students who need the service. The debate over a controversial proposal to build a YMCA in Abbotsford will be back before council on Monday, April 8. Fred Thiessen, a local businessman, made a presentation to council in January against the city’s proposed $17.5-million contribution to the project. The meeting drew about 150 concerned citizens, who heard presentations from Thiessen and a representative of the YMCA. At Monday’s meeting, Thiessen will make another presentation, restating his opposition to the project. The YMCA proposal was last discussed by council at the January meeting, but the process was postponed to allow new city manager George Murray – who took up his post in February – time to review the plan. In the interim, Thiessen launched a campaign to encourage residents to “say no to the YMCA gift.” He has collected donations and endorsements from businesses and community members to run ads in local newspapers encouraging residents to voice their objection to the proposal. The “informational public notices” encourage community members to contribute financially or attach their name to the ad, which directs readers to a website, saynototheymcagift.com. The website outlines the group’s opposition to the project, stating they strongly object to any potential assistance for the YMCA project. The website says it is against the community charter to give tax dollars to any business, including a not-for-profit such as the YMCA.

Trout limit decreased for Mill Lake anglers Daily catch lowered to two

Anglers at Mill Lake are now facing a new fish possession limit. As of April 1, the daily quota for rainbow trout taken from the lake is reduced from four to two. The lake, which is an urban fishery, is managed by Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and stocked by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. The lake is stocked with trout frequently, especially in the fall and spring months. It is not stocked in July or August when higher surface water temperatures reduce the chance of survival. A notice posted at the lake informs anglers of the quota change. Brennan Clarke, public affairs officer for the ministry, stated in a written release that “the ministry stocks Mill Lake with trout each year which gives fisheries biologists an accurate idea of how many fish are in the lake and maintains a consistent number of trout from year to year. “Due to increasing angler effort, the ministry has reduced the allowable catch from four trout per day to two trout per day so that the same number of fish will serve a greater number of anglers.”

Other Hand There was a time in our not too deep and dark past that the denizens of Abbotsford would revel in the fact that our town was mentioned in the Vancouver media. It seemed, in a way back then, that finally our existence had been recognized . . . that we were, for a brief period, no longer a rural backwater. We got our name in print, if not in lights. However, thanks to progress, growth and the Bacons, Abbotsford has become much more recognizable and identifiable in the Metro media. That noted, most people living west of Port Mann still aren’t sure where we are, even though our burgeoning burg is now but 40 minutes from the concrete canyons of “the city.”
For some in the environs of Vancouver, we are the cheap option to the city’s housing prices . . . “well Sally, we can’t afford more than a shoe box here, so (sigh) I guess we’ll have to move all the way to Abbotsford to put a roof over our heads and a piece lawn under our feet.” Then I read the Sun’s front page story last week about the top 10 salaries being dished out from our tax dollars to executives in Crown-owed agencies. The coterie of million-dollar men, of whom I have long and vicariously wished to be among, though due to age and lack of motivation will never achieve, may actually deserve their remuneration. They are, for the most part, running huge organizations and, for example, if you want perhaps the world’s largest non-military ‘navy’ that is BC Ferries to operate properly, you better have people better than the drivers of the Queen of the North at the helm. If, however, you take issue with these salaries, some perspective might be
needed by comparing what hockey players earn simply to put bums in seats and commercials on television. So, as I turned from the front page to the continuation of the story, I was a little surprised to see, under the headline “The highest-paid public ser-

(all in CAPS by the way)” a graph which had, at the top of the leader board, Abbotsford. Seems that our city hall has British Columbia’s highest growth rate of bureaucrats earning more than $100,000 a year – a whopping 61.8 per cent growth this past year over the previous one. Those moving into six figures
jumped from 55 employees to 89 in just 12 months! Again, I don’t deny the necessity of paying anyone fair value for their worth, but has Abbotsford really grown so quickly that it needs to boost its senior executive numbers by 62 per cent in one year alone? And with that rate of “growth,” along with myriad other increases in the cost of operation of our city, the tax burden and attendant price hikes here may eventually be sufficient that people will, instead of moving from Vancouver, move to Vancouver for an affordable place to live. But, before I have the mayor and councillors down my neck, I will admit that the numbers above only indicate salary growth, and not necessarily an increase in bodies. Someone earning $99,000 in 2011, and now makes $101,000, will have met the increase threshold, but is not a new hire. Pipeline risks The Black Press editorial (March 19) “Some realities about oil” made a number of good points, but it greatly oversimplified a complex subject. In particular, it made no distinction between the types of products transported by pipeline and the people who may oppose them. It was not fair to assume that those opposed to diluted bitumen and other crude oil pipelines also oppose LNG pipelines and plants. They each do have their own set of risks that must be

The Abbotsford Magnuson Ford United premier men’s soccer team defeated the Port Moody Gunners 3-0 in the Pakenham Cup final on Sunday afternoon at South Surrey Athletic Park. The Pakenham Cup is one of Canada’s oldest amateur athletic competitions dating back to 1909, and the last time an Abbotsford team last won this coveted trophy was in 1995. After a nervous start for both teams, the crowd of over 400 was treated to some good, competitive soccer worthy of a Cup final. Colton O’Neill broke the deadlock in the 44th minute with a well-placed shot to the far post following an Abbotsford corner kick, and after the half, the Abby side played with more con-

BERGEN John John Benjamin Bergen passed away peacefully in Abbotsford, British Columbia on the 28th of March 2013 at the age of 77 years. John was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Marina and first grandson Nicholas. He is survived by his loving wife Ursula and his children Phil (Mindy), Steve (Sharon), Karen (Dave), Kathy (Darrel), Tim (Charmaine) as well as 15 grandchildren, brothers and sisters and many friends. He is remembered for the many years of service in his community, school, and church. He was a giving person and gave freely of his time and effort to his family. No funeral service will be held as per the families wishes. There will however, be a memorial service at Bethel Reformed Church in Abbotsford on April the 5th at 1 PM. A kind and gentle man, who loved his family, cars and gardening passed away March 26, 2013. He is survived by his loving family: Irene, his wife of 62 years; children Lorraine (Rod) Remin, Bruce (Bonnie), Brenda (Paul) Jeffrey and Pat (Rob) Funk; 10 grandchildren; 7 and counting… great grandchildren; brothers John (Laura), Jake and Abe; sister Helen (Clarence) Fast and many other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Evangelical Bible Church, 2087 McMillan Road, Abbotsford. Walfried (Wally) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He was born on June 27, 1927, in Moscow, Russia, the second son of Cornelius and Mary (Brieger) Klassen. They came to Canada in 1929, and lived in Winnipeg until 1948. With his family, Walfried attended the North End MB Church, where he accepted Jesus as his Savior in 1942. In 1948, after Walfried had studied several years at the U of M, the family moved to Abbotsford, BC, where he taught for two years at MEI. In 1950 Walfried married Helene Rempel; they lived in Vancouver for two years, where he completed a BSc and teacher training at UBC. They moved to Abbotsford in 1952, where Walfried taught in the Abbotsford School District until 1986. Walfried and Helene had ten children, nine of whom survive him, who were all raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The family had deep roots at South Abbotsford MB Church, where Walfried taught Sunday School and served for several years as Secretary of the Church Board. Predeceased by both parents, brother Harold, sisters Irmgard and Justina, and son Timothy, Walfried is survived by his wife Helene, sons Neil (Rebecca), Fred, Berny (Jan), John (Kim), and Jeffrey, and daughters Lenora (Stan Wiens), Rachel (Dave Wall), Judy (Scott Foster), and Vidyul; also twenty-five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Herbert (Maureen) Klassen, and a large extended family. The Memorial Service for Walfried Klassen will take place on Saturday, April 6 at 2:00 pm in the South Abbotsford MB Church.
LINDA HILDEBRAND 1953 - 2013 Hildebrand, Linda passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour on March 27, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Don, sons David (Janelle) and Sean, grandson Judah, and by 5 sisters, 1 brother and their families. She was known as a person who always remembered the little things and made everyone feel special. A celebration of Linda’s life will be held on Friday, April 5 at 1:30 p.m. in Northview Community Church, 32040 Downes Road, Abbotsford, BC.
