ach year, more eagles migrate to Harrison River than anywhere else in the world. They come to feast on the spawning salmon, make their nests and lay their eggs. It's an amazing sight throughout the early winter, as thousands of the raptors fill the treetops and line the river. It's no surprise that bird watchers, ecologists and nature lovers are close behind. The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival has become hugely popular, drawing in record numbers of participants in recent years. And as more curious people flock to the area to take in the sights, by foot and by boat, the greater the infringement they pose. Awareness programming is included in the festival, for those who choose to attend. But the residents of the Harrison Mills area are busy working on more ways to increase education, says Al Roberts, a member of the Harrison Mills Regional Association. They are hoping to create a Chehalis Flats Bald Eagle and Salmon Preserve, as a way to educate visitors about the importance of respecting the wildlife that lives there. They have the support of renowned biologist David Hancock, and Dave Moore, executive director of the Fraser River Salmon Table. Both have agreed to speak at an upcoming public meeting on the subject of a pre-

serve area next weekend. Roberts is hoping all interested parties from around the Fraser Valley will attend. "Our approach is education," Roberts said. "There are more eagles here than anywhere in the world. There are counts now to prove this." Their campaign is not meant to impose rules or fines, but to educate a wide range of groups and individuals who share the area, including outdoor sports clubs, fishermen, hunters and camera buffs. The FVBEF has already donated $2,000 toward signs to be placed at various river access points, with the wording currently being created. Hancock has written extensively on the need for preservation of the entire Harrison-Chehalis area. In a posting from his website (www.hancockwildlife. org) in November, he stresses the need for peace and quiet for the birds. "The incredible gathering of bald eagles during each fall and winter needs not just food. They need peace and quiet and rest," he wrote. "A bioenergetics study done 20 years ago showed that bald eagles cannot sustain their body weight, no matter how much they eat in a day, if they have to undertake wingflapping flight for more than 28 minutes a day." More of Agassiz’s rural residents approached council on Monday night, asking for better traffic calming measures. They are calling for physical obstacles, namely speed bumps and stop signs, that could stop speeders from zooming along the community’s backroads. Noemi Keusch said she appreciates that the municipality has made some changes to signage “but speeding along that route continues,” the mother of two preschoolers said. “The District of Kent has a duty of care to keep all residents safe,” she said, adding that she believes a few speed bumps along the route that connects the Lougheed Hwy with the Agassiz Rosedale bridge could deter speeding and other dangerous driving. “I’m sure changes will be noticed” if four or five speed bumps were placed strategically, she said. “And it’s an in-
significant sum in comparison to what could happen to one of our children.” At a previous meeting, staff reported that speed bumps would cost $3,000 each. While some who live along the route have complained about the increasing flow of traffic over the years, resident Jonathan Sutton told council it’s not the amount of vehicles taking the route that is causing concern. “Our issue here is with speeding,” he said. “We still are requesting effective and sustainable deterrents.” Mayor John Van Laerhoven said council is working on finding the best solution. “We’re wrestling with it,” he said in response to the delegates’ requests. “It’s a really complex issue… If we put speed bumps on that route are we also compelled to put bumps on other collector routes, like McCallum Rd. or MacDonald?” He also reiterated concern

cluding car crashes, and do provide medical assistance. Dyer believes the best way to control speed — and more importantly, reduce accidents —on any route is through police presence and programs like Speed Watch. Van Laerhoven also believes Speed Watch will be effective in that area. The
equipment is easily available through the District of Kent and ICBC. It just takes a few volunteers to take on the project. “By and large, I believe if the general public is made aware they are erring, most will correct themselves,” Van Laerhoven said. At the same meeting, a late
item was introduced proposing that council considers changing the speed limit on one section of Fir Road from 50 km/hr to 30 km/hr. The section runs between Mountain View Road and Pioneer Ave. Council voted in favour of the change, with Coun. Lorne Fisher opposed. A staff report attached stated that the intersections along the route (including Tuyttens, Whelpton, Mountain View, Agassiz Ave., Pioneer, Fir and Ashton) do not meet the warranted requirements for stop signs. Further, it said that unwarranted stop signs can be a potential safety hazard to pedestrians and motorists. On Tuesday morning, several pedestrians were walking the new marked trail that runs along Mountain View Road. While one passerby believed that the project was too costly for the safety benefits gained, others said the addition of the barriers and wider pathway were a welcome change. Kent students become teachers of energy efficiency Elementary school group enters online video contest

Do you know the most efficient way to light a building? Many of us don’t, but a group of Kent elementary students have set out to change that, through the
creation of a educational video. The Light Savers are hoping to cut half the power used in their school, as well as educating their fellow classmates. But they also have used an online video contest to get their message
out even further. BC Green Games was open to students all around the province, and is run by Science World. The two videos with the most votes will each receive a $500 prize (one for K-7 and one for 8-12). There will also be 22 grand prizes of $1,000 each. The contest has been running since 2009 as a way to encourage students to doc-
ument and share project that make positive changes in their school or community. “Our goal is to have school computers shut off daily and monitors shut off after every class,” their entry states. “We are working to make sure that lights are shut off every time a class leaves their room. We are trying to get light sensors put in

Police haven’t released the name of the driver of a Dodge minivan who died when the vehicle collided with a semi truck on Lougheed Highway last Thursday. The truck driver, a 59-year-old Mission man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The minivan driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Agassiz and Popkum fire departments attended the scene, just after 1:30 p.m., 500 metres east of the intersection with Wahleach Road. Witnesses are asked to contact Cst. Second annual run raises fund for local heritage
The skies were blue and clear for the second annual Walk/Run for Heritage on Saturday, Mar. 23 in Agassiz. Mayor John Van Laerhoven of the District of Kent welcomed participants, and Wilma Struys got the runners’ blood pumping with a fun, aerobics-style warm up before they all headed off for their three, five or 10 km runs.
Fun times were had by all, said Agassiz Harrison Museum staff, with many of the participants walking away with prizes from one or more of the many local businesses who generously donated them. The event was hosted by Agassiz Harrison Museum and Kilby Historic Site. The proceeds will go toward preserving the local
heritages of Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and Harrison Mills. The hosts of the Walk/Run for Heritage are grateful to all the sponsors, volunteers, and local businesses that helped to make this event possible. The event grew from last year’s, with the addition of a 10 km run.

Have you ever been caught speeding by Speed Watch?
On a sunny spring morning, almost a steady stream of cars make their way up and down Mountain View Road in Agassiz. There are working vehicles – from both the District of Kent and the Village of Harrison. There are pick up trucks and sedans carrying all passengers and drivers of every age, sex, colour and background. None seem to be speeding, to the casual eye. But that doesn't mean speeding doesn't happen. It would be ridiculous to suggest such a thing, as lead-foot drivers don't usually discriminate when it comes to neighbourhoods. And when it comes to a sunny stretch of a straight country road, nothing could be more tempting to those inclined to push their car to the limits – despite the dangers involved. As pointed out in council on Monday night, speeders speed everywhere. If they learn to avoid the so-called 'bypass route' through the force of a Speed Watch program, RCMP enforcement, physical barriers or through public education, they'll simply speed elsewhere. But they will get caught eventually. It's only a matter of time. RCMP have been stepping up all enforcement in recent months, pulling drivers over for distracted and dangerous driving. Driving with a phone to your chest, speeding against a highway sign, putting on lipstick behind the wheel – it's all against the law, and the RCMP have been clear that you will be ticketed, not warned. Fair enough. With the amount of information out there in all forms of media, there is no reason any driver can claim ignorance of the law or its consequences.

Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – The B.C. election campaign that’s about to get underway will feature lots of talk about skills training. It will be everyone’s top priority, along with a dozen other top priorities. But since elections are no time to deal with serious issues, don’t expect much frank discussion about ways to redirect our increasingly soft, urban society toward useful work. Somebody might be offended. The B.C. Liberals see lots of skilled, technical jobs on the horizon, but they cut their skills training budget and many of their MLAs are also looking at a career change. The B.C. school system, like that of other provinces, still pushes kids to university
programs that lead to coffeeserving jobs and the need for another round of training. This has been going on since the 1970s, and it’s not confined to B.C. The B.C. NDP apparently expects to coast to victory with the same empty rhetoric about “income inequality” and student debt that they’ve been using for years. Their only discernible intent is to return control over how many apprentices can be on a job site to industrial unions, which severely restrict it, squeezing out small business. This team’s ideas are mostly left over from the last industrial revolution. Fortunately there is a midterm federal government that has acted. Last week’s federal budget launches new programs that the next B.C. government will have to go along with. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government didn’t claw

out, it will fund training for 130,000 people a year. Some will be young people, but there will also be older workers whose skills need upgrading. “If they’re willing to look at the jobs that are available and understand that that’s their best shot at making a living and being able to support their own families some day, we want to be sure that the opportunities are there,” Findlay said. The difference is that it has to be what an employer needs, not what the student might prefer. It’s a public-private partnership, as we have seen with modern public works. Findlay acknowledged that even with a big push on training, Canada will still need to import foreign workers. In B.C. we are bracing for an unprecedented resource boom, much of it in the B.C. They didn’t call it Idle No More, but that’s the gist of it. Of course, no worker or province or band council is required to participate. They have the option to leave the federal money on the table. But the NDP should note that the Canada Job Grant applies to union-run apprenticeship schools as well as those in community colleges and technical institutes. Saying no isn’t much of a choice. Whatever grand promises the B.C. Liberals and NDP have written into their yet-to-bereleased election platforms, they will need to find the money to participate. Mailbag Kudos for FVRD director It is so unfortunate that in this day and age that people who only wish to help put forward the concerns of constituents, friends and neighbors are basically attacked for trying to help. I use the word attacked only as an adjective as these “attacks” are of a mental attack rather than a physical one. Our FVRD Area Directors are paid a small annual wage to represent the residents and taxpayers in their areas and in many cases pay out of their own pockets for expenses incurred performing their duties. Several of the FVRD Area Directors have very large districts to cover and their time and vehicle expenses can mount up. It seems that whenever a director stands up for the rights of the area
residents against “Big Business” they get attacked through the back door so to speak. It was good to hear that Area-C Director Wendy Bales gets a Gold Star for her accounting of her expenses to represent the Area-C residents. I know from personal experience in dealing with Wendy she has been honest, respectful, accommodating and nothing but helpful in assisting with the issues I look for help with in my position as Fire Chief in Hemlock Valley. “Good on You” Wendy and keep up the great work you are doing with all the issues that are or may be affecting the lives and well being of the Area-C residents.

Soup and buns filled scholarship fund On behalf of the Agassiz Harrison ministerial Association I would like to thank the citizens of our community for their support of the annual Lenten fundraising activities of the Ministerial Association. Each year, the ministerial sponsors a community-wide fundraising effort to raise money to send a young woman or man to university
with a small bursary from the Association. This year through the soup and buns noon time ministry held at all Saints Church we have raised in excess of $1,000 for the bursary. I also wish to thank the people from the various congregations who came out and supported this work, made soup had attended in a time of reflective fellowship. I also want to thank
the community clergy who participated in this effort. If a young person wishes to avail themselves of a small bursary, application forms are available from their pastor. The bursary is for people leaving high school and attending postsecondary education.

‘Old timers’ help out to create freestyle course in preparation for 2014 event Marty McKinney

This past weekend included two of the best days of the ski season at Hemlock Valley. The sun was shining, the snow was deep, the grooming was suburb and the lineups at the lifts were short. Primo spring skiing. Saturday brought out the boarders for the slope style competition and the resort staff had done a great job on setting up the course and running the event. From the sounds of it everyone had a good time. Saturday and Sunday the Hemlock HOGS (Hemlock Old Geezers Society) showed up to assist the resort staff constructing a freestyle bumps and jumps course in preparation for the 2014 BC Winter
Games. Since the resort staff had never constructed a freestyle course before, the old timers came out to show them how it was done. Young and old worked all day Saturday building the rough ramps for the jumps while the ski instructors made runs down the course to “bump it up” — cutting tight lines in the snow for the turns required to be made by the competitors. On Sunday morning the HOGS and the resort staff got to work shaping the jumps which had frozen in overnight. Shaping can take hours as the transition into the jump and the angle of the face of the jumps are critical in launching the competitors high enough so they can perform their “tricks.” Many of the tricks performed by the com-

petitors are inverted, reverse summersaults, forward rolls, spins, grabs, and the list goes on. For myself, I like my skis to always be connected with the ground. The course opened for the public to come out and give it a try and a good number of first timers gave the course
a run. Not many used the jumps but those that did found out how hard it really is to not just get the nerves to make the jump but to actually land the jump correctly. All ages gave it a try and there was some friendly competition going on between friends, siblings, ski instructors and even members of the Canadian Ski Patrol. Thanks to Hemlock Resort, Freestyle BC and all the volunteers
that showed up to help construct, maintain and run the course throughout the day. For the HOGS, it brought back many memories of the days we spent with our sons and daughters when they were competing locally, provincially and nationally. We heard “remember when” throughout both days working on the course, especially when we hit the day lodge deck at the end of Sunday for a few refreshments.

As a dedicated Lion, our motto is “we serve”. Today (Mar. 18, 2013), I did just that. Coming from Canada – where I am happy to say that the folks who fall through the cracks in the f l o or b o ard s are generally looked after by either the government or by volunteer organizations – here in the Baja you can see people who simply can’t get help. The problem is generally at both ends of the age scale, the young and the old have a hard time. The sick also have a hard time. Today was one of those feel good days to be a Lion. Elena from Loreto invited me to help with her Meals on Wheels
initiative called Rice and Beans. This is not a charity. It is a few dedicated people in Loreto who are trying their best to help those in need. On Saturday I helped to pack 40 food hampers of rice, corn flour, eggs, fruit, beans, cereal, and so on. All of this was donated or paid for by local Loreto folks. On Monday morning I loaded everything into the back of my truck and off we went to some of the poorest areas in Loreto. It took us three hours of driving through the local hills (Colinas) and other areas to deliver the food. Some were young families and some were old folks. The response
from the mums and their beautiful young children would bring tears to most people’s eyes. Thank you Elena, her husband Juan, and friend Lupita for letting me help. You are the salt of the earth; without you the world would be a lot poorer. Yes, I feel good tonight for helping to bring a little cheer to these people, I know we Canadians can do a lot more to help. Lion Senor Ken.

Marksmen compete in Chilliwack
50 Years Ago March 28, 1963 • A team of teenage marksmen from Agassiz Rod and Gun Club competed on Apr. 27 in a .22 Rifle Shoot being put on by Camp Chilliwack Fish and Game Club. At its meeting on Monday, the club named Don Mackay and Bryce Key to handle organizing and training the team. Six members under 20 years were invited to attend. • Some of the businesses in Agassiz in 1963 were Alf Jones Auto, Burgess Feeds, Shell and Truck Service, H. Masson (carpenter and builder), Chuckwagon Café, Agassiz Restaurant, Nichol and Else (Hardware and Plumbing), and
Gibson’s Red and White. • Contestants from Agassiz won junior and intermediate vocal championships at the Chilliwack Music Festival. Miss Sadie Smyth and Miss Janice Green were the winners. • Winners at the Mar. 22 PTA Card Party in Harrison Mills were as follows: Whist, ladies: Mrs. A. Johnson, first and Mrs. A.B. With Easter just days away and a tradition of gift giving around this time of year, the BC SPCA urges the public to not buy bunnies as Easter gifts. Craig Naherniak, general manager of humane education for the BC SPCA, says it may come as a surprise that rabbits and children are not a great match. "Rabbits are great companions for adults,
but are not appropriate pets for small children despite the pervasive media images of children with rabbits," he says. “They are prey animals and picking them up distresses them. Like any pet, they require proper care and can live up to 12 years.” Each year SPCA branches across B.C. receive hundreds of abandoned bunnies after
the holiday has passed. “The animals who are turned in at SPCA shelters are the lucky ones,” says Naherniak. “Many others are abandoned to the wild to fend for themselves. Wally passed away in Chilliwack on March 24, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Zetland, Alberta on April 5, 1924. He is survived by his son Lorne(Linda), their children Mike and Paul, great grandchildren Michelle, Amber, and Jaymee, great great grandson, Leo; daughter Yvette, his sister Florence(Jack) Dickinson, also several nieces and nephews. Wally was predeceased by his wife Anita of 61 years of marriage. The family moved from Ontario to Agassiz and later to Chilliwack. Many will recall him as their barber. A retired Veteran, who was active as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, in Agassiz. Wally was an avid fisherman and often accompanied by his wife, spent many summer weekends camping and fishing various lakes in southern BC. Wally loved music and was an accomplished violinist. In his younger years he played in several bands. Later on when he was no longer able to play the violin, Wally enjoyed symphonies, and musical productions. Always a gentleman, Wally was a quiet reserved man, kind and generous. He loved the Lord and a faithful attendant at daily Mass at St.Mary’s . He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, great great grandfather, and had many friends, who will miss him including Lucy, a very special friend. Funeral Mass will be held from St.Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 8909 Mary St. Chilliwack on Wednesday, April 3 at 11;00 A.M. Followed by a reception at the Parish Hall. If friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Cremation. Burial of Urn to follow at a later date.
