A new poll shows half of Lower Mainland air travellers recently drove to the U.S. to catch a cheaper flight instead of using a B.C. airport. But the request had been online long enough to attract the attention of a TV media outlet, which pursued the story. ‘A very special kind of man’

a donor for Dave, now 75. One was a match, and he had a successful transplant three years ago. Lois continues to share her story, particularly during Kidney Health Month in March, in hopes of inspiring others to become organ donors – either while alive or upon their death. She points out that the average wait time for a person on the list to receive an organ from a deceased person is five years. Many people die before that time comes. Dave, who declined to be interviewed, was diagnosed in his early 60s with polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary condition in which cysts form on the kidneys, causing them to become enlarged. This results in reduced kidney function and, eventually, failure. Their two grown daughters, a grandson and Dave’s sister have also been diagnosed with the disease, making them ineligible to be kidney donors. In late 2006, Dave was placed on dialysis, a procedure he endured three days a week, five hours at a time, to remove waste products from his blood

– a task that his failing kidneys could no longer perform. The process severely impacted the couple’s lives, preventing them from travelling, including the motorcycle trips they had previously enjoyed. Dave’s condition and treatment left him continuously fatigued and unable to accomplish tasks such as yard work. He was on the waiting list for a cadaver transplant, but as his condition worsened, Lois feared there might not be enough time – thus, her plea over the Internet. The couple are forever grateful to the man who donated his kidney. They met him once for dinner before the procedure, but he otherwise wanted to stay anonymous. “He was just a very special kind of man,” Lois said. It took about 18 months after the surgery for Dave to adjust to the antirejection drugs, which can have severe side effects. The pair have now begun travelling again – mostly across B.C., because the cost of Dave’s medical insurance to go elsewhere is too ex-

pensive – and are back on their motorcycles. “Generally speaking, he’s doing pretty well … Sometimes he grumbles about having to take pills four times a day, but it’s better than the alternative,” Lois said. She now wants to return the favour by donating her kidney – hopefully, to her sister-in-law. Although their kidneys are not an exact match, medical advancements now make these types of transplants a possibility in some cases. But her sister-in-law is worried about the procedure and hasn’t decided whether she will proceed with that option or go a more traditional route. If she decides against it, Lois said she hopes to find someone else to whom she can donate a kidney. “I’d just like to pay it forward,” she said. Insect found to be attacking greenhouse peppers Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

An invasive species of moth has been found exhibiting some unusual behavior in greenhouses in Abbotsford. Diamondback moths, which are not native to North America, are a serious pest of cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and similar green leaf plants. They were recently found infesting bell peppers in two greenhouses in Abbotsford, something that has never been reported before. Dr. Rana Sarfraz, an entomologist at the University of British Columbia who studied diamondback moths for his PhD, was called to Abbotsford to examine an insect feeding on crops in local greenhouses. The owners of the greenhouses, who Sarfraz declined to name due to privacy issues, did not know what had infested their crops. Sarfraz said he has never heard of another case in the world where diamondback moths have infested bell peppers. He said this discovery “raises all kinds of questions about what’s happening.” Sarfraz said the moths are extremely difficult to control on their normal host plants, and pose a serious threat to the crops. He found at the Abbotsford greenhouses, a “number much higher than their threshold,” calling the infestations serious. Sarfraz explained that B.C. is a hotspot for diamondback moths, due to the mild climate. They originated in Mediterranean areas and are a serious pest in the Prairie provinces. He said there are often outbreaks of the moths in those provinces throughout the year, but due to the cold winters, the moths die off. In the warmer climate of the Fraser Valley, with less freezing to kill them, the concern about infestation is greater. Sarfraz said with the added heat from greenhouse growing, there is potential for an infestation to be much worse. “Greenhouses are the perfect conditions ford such pests, who are already very successful on their traditional host outdoors.” He said the warm conditions of greenhouses allows the insects to reproduce through multiple generations, throughout the year. He said that this could potentially wipe out the whole crop. The caterpillars of the diamondback moths will eat all parts of the plants except for the roots. Sarfraz worries that if the moths have adapted to be able to eat peppers, they would potentially be able to adapt to eat other greenhouse-grown plants, such as tomatoes and potatoes, or vegetables similar to peppers. Safraz took specimens from the Abbotsford greenhouses, and allowed them to infest cruciferous plants. They adapted back to a cruciferous vegetable diet easily. He said the moth is already one of the most difficult pests to control on its original host plant, and it is unknown how it could be controlled if infesting other species, and to what threshold the crops could handle the pest. He has researched the control of diamondback moths, saying that across the world, infestations of diamondback moths cost about $4 to 5 billion worldwide in damage to crops. Sarfraz said what he saw in Abbotsford would indicate that this is not a small infestation. “I would say the infestation was pretty high.” He is concerned that more greenhouses in the area might be facing this problem. But in the meantime, he will continue researching what effect this discovery could have.

everyone around here is that it is just a ridiculous suggestion to put these two highrises in the middle of this low-rise residential area.” These would not be the only apartment towers in the neighbourhood – there are three 17-storey towers at the corner of Gladwin and Maclure roads. However, Bradbury said those building are far enough away that they don’t have much of an impact on the townhouses that make up much of the community. Bradbury said the new development will be “totally out of place,” and have a population density that is too high for the area. “This is almost a 10-acre parcel. If they get 900 units, with two people in each, that’s 1,800 people living on a 10-acre lot.” Part of the proposal states the developer will create a 1.75-acre public green space, featuring an open field, a children’s play area and a viewing area platform for the pond that is on-site, adjacent to Horn Creek trail. Louise Oppel, a nearby resident at Trafalgar Street and Maclure Road, is concerned about the environmental impact from the development on neighbouring Horn Creek, which she said is fish-bearing. “Just because its not quite in my backyard, doesn’t mean I’m not concerned about it.” Katherine Jeffcoatt, director of communication for the City of Abbotsford, said the developer undertook a number of environmental assessments of the creek, receiving approval from both the city and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The developer is re-

quired to do environmental monitoring during construction, complete restoration work around the pond, ensure the storm water management plan meets fisheries’ requirements and conduct a two-year follow up to ensure the restoration works are functioning as intended. Currently, the tallest building in Abbotsford is 16 storeys, but the city has approved a 26-storey high-rise at Gladwin Road and Bevan Ave, near Mill Lake. The development, called Mahogany at Mill Lake, was approved in 2010 and is in the process of being built. The original proposal for a 28-storey Mahogany at Mill Lake tower was voted down by council in 2009, following public outcry. A group of neighbours who dubbed themselves “The Sun People,” due to the shadow the tower would cast on their homes, came out in hundreds to protest each step of the project. The proposal was then reduced to a 26-storey tower, which council approved, with four councillors and thenmayor George Peary voting for the project, and four councillors against. Abbotsford has dealt with the issue of building new towers since signing its new Official Community Plan – a 20-year planning vision for the city – in 2005. That document called for higher-density housing in the city centre to reduce spread into the Agricultural Land Reserve to the west, or Sumas Mountain to the east. The public hearing for the proposed bylaw amendments for the Gladwin site will be held Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.

Drivers in Maz may be mildly maniacal, but they’re mellow maniacs, rarely ever yelling, gesturing rudely, or blowing their horns. B.C. road-ragers could learn something from these folks. Roll down the windows, turn up the music, and relax!

Monument raises numerous concerns

Re: “Golden Tree in memory of farm workers,” The News, March 12. After reading this piece I have to seriously question the cognitive function and lack of common sense that went into the decision to put up a monument in commemoration of the individuals (albeit dedicated to all farm workers) who tragically died in a motor vehicle accident. This was a tragic

accident with contributing safety violations by the contractors. Motor vehicle accidents happen every day with tragic results, but is it appropriate to build a monument for every segment of our work force or ethnic community that might be involved? Is this $ 100,000 allocation of taxpayer-funded government spending just another case of pandering to an ethnic

segment of our community to garner votes? I am so cynical and suspect of all politicians and political parties as evidenced by their recent behaviour. This story raises a lot of concerns: 1. Could the money be better spent in support of the families who suffered, through an education fund for any children involved or to better educate the vulnerable farm

workers? 2. Are we setting a precedent of monuments in public parks? 3. Who will pay for the maintenance and inevitable vandalism which will occur? 4. If this monument is made of brass or stainless steel, how long before it is harvested by metal collectors? 5. Would a park bench with plaque, paid for by this community, be more

Funding isn’t the only health issue in B.C. What’s being done with the money is equally important, according to NDP health critic Mike Farnworth. Farnworth was in Abbotsford on Tuesday, discussing election issues and concerns with local constituents and the media. Because of his position, the subject of health care came up frequently. “Wait times are still an issue,” he said, telling the story of a local man who has been waiting for almost three years for a two-hour bladder surgery. “To wait that long is really ridiculous.” An apparent lack of funding for Fraser Health in comparison to other health authorities is another hot topic. New political entity SCHOOL DISTRICT

NEWS School calendar set for next year

The 2013-14 school calendar in Abbotsford will look very similar to the current year’s calendar, as the Board of Education has approved a ‘status quo’ version for the coming year. The schedule for 2013-14 includes school beginning September 3, a Christmas/New Year’s break from December 23 to January 3, and a two-week spring vacation March 17-28, 2014, while providing for 180 days of instruction. Abby Senior Secondary opening

Earlier this month, with a thunderous welcome by the Abby Senior Drumline, the school district, province and city celebrated the official opening of the new Abbotsford Senior Secondary School, Abbotsford Community Library, the Sweeney Neighbourhood Centre, and upgraded Abbotsford Arts Centre. Funded through the province’s Seismic Mitigation Program, the project was the largest and most expensive in the school district to date, at $45-million. The facility will be a legacy for our community for years to come.

Amended District budget reflects higher expenditures, revenues

The Board recently approved the annual amended budget for 2012-13, which reflects expenditures of $192.8 million. This is an increase of $11.6 million from the preliminary budget which was set at the beginning of the fiscal year. The district received more funding from the Ministry of Education, mainly due to higher than anticipated enrollments. Increased expenditures were noted in the areas of instruction ($7.4 million higher) and operations and maintenance ($2.3 million). To balance the amended annual budget, the district utilized $8.5 million from its accumulated surplus. The Board will hold

a follow-up public information meeting for its 2013/14 budget on April 18.

Upper Sumas ‘Terrific Kids’ It was a special field trip to the Chilliwack Corn Maize recently for 40 Upper Sumas Elementary students, as the district celebrated the terrific work of the school’s ‘Terrific Kids’. This program is comprised of students in grades 2 – 7 who volunteer to be peer mentors to work or play alongside students with special needs. The mentors spend one lunch hour per week throughout the year with their special buddy, giving of their time, energy and positive support to help children with special needs. “Peers helping peers is a powerful way to improve social skills, help children develop friendships, improve language skills and develop empathy and positive connections,” says school Principal Darlene MacDonald.

BC Excalibur Party starts in Abby

An Abbotsford man has created a new political party that bases some of its values on an ancient idea. Michael Halliday named his new entity the B.C. Excalibur Party, and he uses the name and image of the legendary magical sword yielded by King Arthur. The sword logo, which includes the words “truth, honour and justice,” is a symbol of what his party stands for. “It (Excalibur) was a symbol that united the country and gave them a golden age … at a time when things were falling apart,” said Halliday. He feels it is a fitting analogy for today’s society, which he said is collapsing. Halliday said he made the decision to create the new party after talking to voters. About 85 per cent of the people he spoke to said they either weren’t going to vote in the May election or didn’t know what party to support. “People are so disgruntled with the parties out there right now that we need something new and

different and that’s what the Excalibur Party is.” While he knows it’s a late start, Halliday said he is trying to attract people who are willing to run as candidates. So far he has about eight people who are interested. “I want to run the full slate of candidates; that’s my goal.” Halliday ran for office in the 2009 B.C. election as an independent in the riding of VancouverFalse Creek. He plans to run this year in Chilliwack. “My power base is more in Chilliwack,” he said, explaining that he still wants to find candidates for the Abbotsford ridings. Using the name Excalibur has prompted some people to ask Halliday if he’s serious about politics or just joking around. He understands that concern. “It is for real and there is that problem, but at the same time it’s a name that people instantly recognize and understand and some people instantly know what it is and I get real strong reactions with the symbolism of it,” he said.

Alpen Club hosts dance

The Abbotsford Mission Alpen Club will hold an anniversary dance on Saturday, April 6. Doors open at 5 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts C e n t r e, 2329 Crescent Way. The PacWest female athlete of the year award is the latest accolade for Kayla Bruce following a glittering championship season with the UFV Cascades.

The awards just keep rolling in for University of the Fraser Valley volleyball star Kayla Bruce. Last week the fifth-year Cascades middle was named the PacWest conference female athlete of the year. It’s the second consecutive year she’s won the award, which encompasses all sports in the B.C. collegiate league. Bruce led the conference in total offence (4.57 points per set) and blocks (1.02), and was third in kills (3.26). It’s just the latest accolade in what has been a glittering season for Bruce. Earlier this year, the Surrey native was named PacWest women’s volleyball player of the year, and she added the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association women’s volleyball player of the year and All-Canadian honours. Most importantly, her Cascades won the PacWest conference and CCAA national titles for the first time in program history, posting a 27-2 record along the way. Bruce is the third

UFV studentathlete to win the PacWest female athlete of the year, joining women’s basketball players Jamie Born (200405) and Lauren Alonzo (2002-03).

Abbotsford rugby player Riley Saliken has won the male athlete of the year award at Royal Military College. Saliken, a Robert Bateman Secondary grad completing his fourth year at the Kingston, Ont. school, was the recipient of the Tommy Smart Cup. He was named an Ontario University Athletics all-star for a third time and was the RMC men’s rugby MVP in 2012-13, following a season in which he led his team in tackles and was named player of the match by opposing coaches five times. Saliken is set to graduate in May and will be an officer in RCAF as a pilot.

The U18 Hurricane boys soccer team from Magnuson Ford Mariners FC won the North Vancouver Invitational Tournament last week. The Abbotsford Hawks midget Tier 1 boys hockey team wasn’t anywhere close to full strength when they hit the ice last week for the provincial championship tournament at MSA Arena. The host club was missing two key players due to injury, and three more due to rugby commitments. That hampered their pursuit of a title, but they turned in a gritty performance nevertheless en route to a fourthplace finish. “There was absolutely no questioning our work ethic through the whole thing,” head coach Andy Neilsen said. “Our group really came together and battled hard. “And our three affiliate players came in and did a great job on short notice.” The Hawks went 1-3-1 during the round robin portion of the tourney, posting a 6-5 victory over Cloverdale and rallying from a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 draw with Comox Valley in their finale. Kelowna claimed the title, edging Langley 2-1 in a double-overtime thriller in the final. “That was a great game,” Neilsen noted. “Kelowna is a really strong hockey team.” The event generated a lot of positive feedback, and Neilsen lauded the job done by the host committee. “There is a ton of work that goes on behind the scenes, and our parent group did a great job,” he said. “And as far as community supporting us with sponsorships and donations, it was outstanding. It was a great representation of Abbotsford, for sure.”

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Penny due to a brief battle with cancer. Penny will be dearly missed by her partner Clarke, her daughter Tasha (Steve), her beautiful granddaughters Emma and Hanna, parents Roy and Marge, brothers Al (Denny), Steve, her sisters Pam (Jay), Bev (Carl), Ronnie (Matt), mother-in-law Shirley, stepchildren Kalvin and Steven and by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Penny enjoyed crafts, gardening, reading, camping, fishing, and most of all spending time with her granddaughters. Penny also loved to dance and leaves us with treasured memories of her “funky” moves. Penny’s laughter, wit, sense of humour, courage and her quiet wisdom will remain forever in our hearts. After a long hard battle with cancer, David passed away on March 24, 2013. He was predeceased by his parents Hetty and Ralph Morrison and his first wife Gerry of Abbotsford, BC. David is survived by two sons: Colin (Simi) of the Yukon, Chris (Amy) of Charlotte, North Carolina; devoted fiancée Sandra Bedford of Kelowna and his many friends in the Lower Mainland. He served as Charter President (1985) and was a life member of the Optimist Club of Abbotsford and was also the District Governor of the Pacific Northwest District for Optimist International (1997 1998). He continued his love for dancing with his many new friends in Kelowna. David’s passion was photography, which he shared with his caring friend Larry Meade who has been a constant support during his difficult journey. He was looking forward to more camping and fishing in the Okanagan. David will be remembered for his smile, wit and gentle nature. He was always there to lend a hand. We wish to thank all the staff at Hospice House for their devotion and caring ways shown to David, his family and friends, making his passing more peaceful. There will be a celebration of David’s life on Thursday, April 11 at 1:00 pm at the Club House at the Bristol Gardens, 1965 Durnin Road, Kelowna, BC. WANDLER Christian Jack

PENNER Constance April 3, 1922 ~ March 21, 2013 After helping raise her six younger siblings in the coal mining and textile area of Yorkshire, England, Connie spent the six war years as a member of the British Army, working in Allied hospitals in France, Belgium, and Germany. She came to Canada in 1946 as a war bride, setting up home in Vancouver. Connie retired to Mission in 1982, spending happy days with family and volunteering with the Hospital Auxilliary. Predeceased by first husband Alick Hammond, she is survived in Mission by her loving husband of almost 47 years Ed Penner, son Barry (Gillian), granddaughter Kayte, great-granddaughter Emma, and niece Carol of Chilliwack. Special thanks to Dr. C. Neville and the staff of ARHCC and to the residents and staff of Carrington House for their friendship and support. Chris passed away at Royal Columbian Hospital on March 12, 2013. He was predeceased by his wife Linda in 2006. Chris was born on Sept. 12, 1920 in Prelate, SK to Sebastion Wandler and Magdalene Yochim. Chris grew up in Wilkie, SK where he met and married Silverline Miller. He worked in the grocery industry for 22 years and served in the military from March 1944 to August 1946. Chris and Linda moved to Trail, BC, eventually moving to Aldergrove, BC to raise their family and work in construction, finally settling in Chilliwack. Chris is survived by his children James (Karen), Joyce Johnson (Elwood), Jeannette Weiss (Richard), grandchildren; Kevin Wandler, Vicki Hinks (Atilla Szigetti), Murray Wandler, Arthur Johnson (Roberta), Alan Johnson (Rene), Nathan Weiss (Lyndsey), Curtis Weiss, Christopher Weiss (Stephanie Ybarra) Rhiannon Weiss, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Chris will be missed but never forgotten. Funeral service will be held on Friday April 5 at 10:00 am at St. Maryâ€™s Catholic Church, Chilliwack, BC.
