Pedestrian walkway being built Lighting upgrades also planned for overpass BY CAROL AUN Mission Record

A $2.3-million pedestrian walkway to the Junction Shopping Centre is being constructed on the east side of Highway 11, just south of the Lougheed Highway. The much-demanded path has been a priority project for previous councils, but only now has the Ministry of Transportation agreed to spend the money. A two-metre wide aluminum structure will be built to hang off the overpass and above the railway tracks.

The project is a compromise, said Mission Mayor Ted Adlem, who explained the district originally wanted to eliminate truck traffic from First Avenue. The compromise was a reduced speed on First Avenue (from 50 km/h to 40 km/h) and a walkway, explained Adlem. “It should’ve been done many years ago, and I’m glad it’s being done now,” he noted. But as part of the downtown revitalization plan, the municipality is still working on convincing the ministry to re-route truck traffic from First to North Railway Avenue. When you see people walking along the highway, it’s obviously very dangerous, said AbbotsfordMission MLA Randy Hawes, adding

it was only a matter of time before someone would be hit and killed. The idea for a pedestrian overpass is too expensive and there are a lot of safety concerns too, said Hawes. “We need a sidewalk someone can push a cart or baby carriage on,” added Hawes. The walkway was already high on the ministry’s list, and with a little push, it was moved to the top, said Hawes. There will also be structural and lighting upgrades to the overpass, noted Marc Dalton, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission. Gregory Ould, founder of Blanket BC, has been advocating for this type of infrastructure for years. He lobbied previous municipal councils and the provincial gov-

ernment for years and didn’t give up when they told him there was no funding. Now, he’s “ecstatic” about the work. Ould likes to bike or walk to as many places around the community as he can with his family and has had some close calls walking to the Junction from Lougheed Highway. As a driver, he also nearly hit three youth walking on the same path. “Some guy on the phone veered towards me and I moved over and nearly hit them,” Ould recalled. “You feel very uncomfortable walking there.” An official announcement for the project is scheduled to be held today (March 28) at the Junction Shopping Centre. For details from the event, visit missioncityrecord.com.

Jepsen donates thousands to support local music programs As Mission singer Carly Rae Jepsen’s success continues to grow, she has not forgotten her roots in the Fraser Valley. The international star is donating $60,000 to help support students in the Mission school district. Most of the money ($50,000) will be used to set up a bursary at Mission Community Foundation, and given each year to a student pursuing post secondary studies or training in the fine and performing arts. This includes, but not limited to, students with an interest in voice, instrumental, dance, drama, music creation/production and musical theatre. An additional $1,000 will be added to make the bursary available in the spring this year. Jepsen is also donating $9,000 to be split between the fine and performing arts departments in Mission’s three high schools, Hatzic secondary, Heritage Park, and Mission Secondary. “I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of these programs and to receive the support of dedicated teachers,”

said Jepsen, who says she simply wanted to give something back to the community that has supported her throughout her career. Singer crafts

Mission is last stop for Ballet Kelowna Ballet Kelowna’s Passages will be performed at the Clarke Theatre on Arpil 16. This is your last chance to see the dance company in its current state. Several weeks ago the outgoing board suspended the company’s operations; not because they were in debt but rather they worried about being sustainable, explained Pam Alexis of Alexis Event Management, who is bringing the show to Mission. With a “groundswell” of community support, there is hope Ballet Kelowna will have a new board and will be viable again within a year, said Alexis, noting Mission has the chance to support professional dance and prove “we do care about the arts in our province.” Clarke Theatre manager Bronwen Sutherland, added, “For students of dance, it is imperative to be exposed to a high level of professionalism as it provides an opportunity for the young dancers to dream about their own careers in dance.” Tickets to Ballet Kelowna’s Passages are available at the Clarke Theatre, Mission Leisure Centre, Fraser Valley Academy of Dance and Jazz-Ma-Tazz in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge. For more information, call Pam Alexis of AEM Alexis Event Management. Partial proceeds of this performance will be going to Culture Kids.

Events organized to help Pernosky family

Grab-A-Java owner Dave Perritt has established an account where people can donate money to help the young son of Rachel Pernosky. JASON ROESSLE PHOTO

Dave Perritt always knew Mission was filled with strong, community-minded people, but events of the recent week have reinforced that belief. Perritt owns Grab-AJava Coffee House and Roasterie on Seventh Avenue, and Brittany, the sister of 18-year-old Rachel Pernosky who was found murdered last Tuesday, is one of his employees. Since word first came about the teen’s disappearance, Grab-A-Java became a central meeting spot from which groups would head out to search and put up missing posters throughout the area. And once the tragic news came of her death, close friends have been leaving flowers, candles

and donations for Pernosky’s 18-month-old son, Marco. “There’s been quite a large amount of support. It shows the sense of community we have in Mission,” said Perritt. “It didn’t surprise me, but it made me proud to be a Missionite.” Dozens of people have been “coming out of the woodwork” and offering to help, he noted, including one woman who said she would knit clothes for Marco. Perritt established an account through Envision Financial (account number 458 853 9) where people can directly deposit funds, and he has made several trips with hundreds of dollars collected from the jar at the coffee shop. Before last Thursday’s public candlelight vigil at Fraser River Heritage Park which drew between 300-400 people, a

smaller, private one was held at Grab-A-Java. About 30 people were present, said Perritt. Mission RCMP first put out the missing person report about Rachel mid-afternoon March 18. She had last been seen around 12:30 a.m. March 17 at her home in the 7700 block of Kite Street. Her cell phone and purse were still inside the house. A passerby in Chilliwack on Old Orchard Road happened upon the teen’s body March 19, and the file was turned over to the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

A press conference on March 19 saw IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Jennifer Pound say they do not have any suspects or motive, but believed the attack was not random. “Rachel was just 18 years old and a mother of a baby when her life was brutally taken from her. “The person(s) who murdered her have left a hole in the lives of those who loved her, and child who will be without his mom,” she said. • For the most recent details, and photos from last week’s candlelight vigil, please visit missioncityrecord.com.

The talent show is a chance for youth to go out on stage and show off their talents, but this year, the event will have a dual purpose. The goal is to raise $500, which will be matched by the Optimist Club, said Nicholson, who is also challenging other service clubs in the community to make matching donations. “Every penny raised from the auction will go to Marco’s trust fund,” noted Nicholson, who will be collecting donations until April 5. Donations can be dropped off at Sue’s Copy Place on First Avenue, or Grab-A-Java on Seventh. The talent show takes place at the Clarke Theatre at 7 p.m. • A Mission homebased business, Clever Canadian Couponing (CCC), is donating a portion of the proceeds from an April 8 couponing class to the Rachel Pernosky fund, started at Grab-A-Java Coffee House and Roasterie.

For Easter is a celebration of rebirth, and what better time to celebrate this than when the earth is springing back into life. The new life of spring reminds us that this world is eternally productive and creative. The apparent lifelessness of winter is only an illusion. Sleeping just beneath the surface, is life and more life, awaiting God’s gentle touch to reawaken it. In the same way, Easter reminds us that the death of our bodies is an illusion. Beneath it is life and more life. The Bible tells us that God so loved the world the He gave us His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. We will one day shed our bodies, as the trees shed their leaves and snakes shed their skins, and we will be reborn into life everlasting. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. New K.J.V. John 10:28

No tax cuts from Ottawa in 2013 budget Canadians will see little new spending from Ottawa this year as the government stays on target to get rid of the deficit by 2015, although resources are being reshuffled to boost skills training, infrastructure projects and manufacturing. “It’s staying the course of creating jobs, long-term growth and economic prosperity,” Randy Kamp, member of parliament for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission, said following last Thurs-

day’s budget speech. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s 2013 federal budget commits $900 million in new spending, with no new taxes or tax cuts. It also introduced a new Canada Job Grant that will hand out up to $5,000 per person for job training. That amount must be matched by provinces or territories and employers for a total of $15,000. The budget projects the grant program will help provide 130,000 people a year with skills

and training once the agreements are signed with all provinces and territories. “We’ve done fairly well in uncertain times and are up to about 950,000 jobs since the end of the recession,” Kamp added. “We are encouraged by that and want it to continue by not raising taxes.” Kamp added the new Canada Jobs Grant is to help more Canadians connect with jobs and get the training they need. To offset new spend-

ing, the government intends to find $100 million by spending less and an additional $400 million by closing tax loopholes and catching tax cheats. There will be more cash for infrastructure projects — over $47 bil-

lion in new funding over 10 years starting in 2014. It includes $32.2 billion through a Community Improvement Fund, partly funded by an indexed Gas Tax Fund, which was recommended by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

The budget also lowered tariffs on baby clothes and hockey equipment. The official opposition accused the federal government of playing a “shell game “ with skills training money, while killing jobs with

austerity cuts. “There is nothing in this budget to prepare Canada for a 21st Century economy. The Conservatives are leaving a huge environmental, social and fiscal debt to our children,” said opposition leader Tom Mulcair.

The newly installed gates performed well after recent tests.

BC HYDRO PHOTO

Dam spillway gates tested The newly installed spillway gates were tested recently and performed well, according to BC Hydro. The 24,000 kilogram gates were opened to allow reservoir water to rush through, and then closed to ensure everything functioned properly. The gates are critical components of dams, read a Hydro release, acting as moveable water barriers that

allow the utility company to discharge water from the Stave reservoir in a controlled manner. In the event of a flood, the gates ensure Hydro can manage the water without damaging the dam. The gate replacement project included swapping out four nearly 100-year-old radial spillway gates, and the existing radial gate hoists and electrical distribution system.

The replacement of this equipment was the last major component of the regeneration of the Stave Falls Dam and Powerhouse, which began in 1996 with the replacement of the powerhouse and upgrade to the main dam. Police arrest two suspects Mission RCMP arrested two suspects after an interrupted break-in at the Mission SilverCity theatre on Tuesday. The suspects had broken into the building and were attempting to break into the ATM in the lobby. As Mounties arrived, they spotted a grey minivan fleeing from the scene. Its flight from the area was cut short when it was blocked by a nearby train causing the suspects to abandon their vehicle and flee on foot. The two were arrested a short distance away. A 35-year-old male from Maple Ridge and a 25-yearold female from Abbotsford are facing several charges related to this incident.

10 The Mission Record Thursday, March 28, 2013

District records 1.1% drop during Earth Hour Many Mission residents didn’t recognize Earth Hour, as the community scored seventh to last out of 68 B.C. communities Saturday night. The annual event asks people to turn off unnecessary lights and other electricity-consuming items between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on March 24. Mission’s electricity consumption dipped 1.1 per cent, which is an improvement from last year’s 0.68 per cent drop. Overall, the province saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.95 per cent, the equivalent of turning off more than 10 million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs. Comox and Courtenay on Vancouver Island topped the list, with a reduction of nearly 10 per cent each. Earth Hour is an annual event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and supported by BC Hydro.

brake fLuiD fLush Corrosion is the #1 cause of brake component failure. Corrosion can pit the metal bores of the master cylinder, and ABS components. Just like engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid, brake fluid “wears” over time. Not only does brake fluid wear, but the internal brake components also wear, producing “slude”. This leaves the brake system vulnerable to corrosion and compromise.

A local martial arts instructor is combining a grading for his students, with an opportunity for the public to learn some new skills and help the local food bank on March 30-31. Chris Ginter is a sixthdegree black belt in jujitsu, runs a Mission-based school, and is organizing Budofest, a two-day event that is bringing karate and jujitsu instructors together. Ginter said he was involved with a similar fundraiser in Maple Ridge last year with the Friends in Need Food Bank, and this year is collecting donations for the St. Joseph’s Food Bank on Seventh Avenue. Those interested can take part in karate and jujitsu instruction throughout the weekend, and are encouraged to bring donations for those less fortunate. Ginter runs his school out of the Canadian Martial Arts Academy on North Railway Avenue, directly across from the West Coast Express station. For more information, and for drop-in times, call Chris at 604-7670427.
