‘Quick-moving’ blaze leaves family homeless Cause of fire in Langley City is under investigation Dan Ferguson Times Reporter
Fire destroyed a single-family home in the 4500 block of 208 Street Tuesday morning, leaving a couple and their two-year-old daughter homeless. Paul Riddoch said he was home with his daughter when their landlord, who shared the house with them, pounded on their door and warned them to leave. “By the time I’d collected my computer, my daughter and our dog there was nothing else to salvage,” Riddoch told The Times. “It went up so fast.” His wife was at work. The blaze destroyed the house and all its contents, some of it irreplaceable, Riddoch said. “[We lost] family photo albums, all our clothes, our bedroom, all
our daughter’s bedroom.” He said his family was going to stay with his mother, who lives nearby. The Langley City Fire-Rescue Service said the fire was first reported around 10:15 am. Crews arrived to to find a “quick moving and intense” fire had broken out in the attic. The threat of a roof collapse kept firefighters from entering and forced them to fight the blaze from outside. The house has been declared a complete write-off, with an estimated loss of about $300,000. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but it is not considered a suspicious fire. Fire crews from the Township of Langley assisted the fight and RCMP blocked off traffic on 208 Street. At the height of the fire, six trucks and 24 firefighters were on the scene. There were no injuries. A fire department official said the landlord did have insurance, but his tenants did not.
