Roundabouts coming for Watson and Keith Wilson Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

Construction of two new roundabouts on the south side of Chilliwack should start some time later this year. One will be at the intersection of Tyson Road and Watson Road, while the other is going in at Tyson and Keith Wilson Road. Both are currently controlled by fourway stops. To identify qualified companies for the design-build project, City of Chilliwack issued a request for expressions of interest (RFEI) this week, which closes on April 16. The question of how to keep traffic flowing in that increasingly busy part of town was referred to city staff to decide if a traffic light or a roundabout would be the best option. “Staff have come back and identified that a roundabout design would be a good solution to the traffic issues,” said Coun. Jason Lum, who is chair of the transportation advisory committee. If it’s efficient at reducing the bottleneck situations and it can be done at a lower cost to the taxpayer than signalization, it makes sense, he said. NDP Health Critic Mike Farnwor th stopped by Chilliwack on Tuesday to discuss health care with local seniors at Lynnwood Retirement Residence. Seniors will make up nearly one-fifth of Chilliwack’s population by 2030. The health concerns brought on by a rapidly aging population are key campaign topics in the upcoming provincial election. Farnworth’s message was that it is not a question of putting more money into health care, but rather using existing funds more efficiently. This applies to Chilliwack General Hospital’s chronic overcapacity emergency room. “In the Lower Mainland, that’s one of the key issues. We’re growing very fast. It’s not a case of just throwing money at it... There’s different issues in the community. Let’s work with the physicians in those communi-

ties. Let’s work with the BCMA (B.C. Medical Association), identity what the issues are... and get them fixed.” Farnworth did not provide solutions specific to Chilliwack’s context, instead speaking about issues on a provincial level. “Whether it’s emergency rooms, and having a plan to deal with them, and identifying problems, or gaps in the ability to provide services such as dialysis, it’s not going to take huge amounts of money sometimes to fix some of these problems. Or, it’s a reconfiguration of services within the health authority that will allow additional services.” To free up resources, Farnworth suggests using technology better, setting up more

efficient referral systems, using more nurse practitioners, and hiring more salaried physicians. On the issue of water chlorination in Chilliwack, Farnworth said that “health and safety have to come first.” MLA Chilliwack-Hope Gwen O’Mahony said that she is conducting research on the issue, and will present her results at the all-candidates’ debates. “I have followed up as MLA. I have been writing letters and investigating specific concerns by community members. Despite the fury with which people initially rejected the HST, many came around by the time of the referendum. Chilliwack voted to extinguish the tax by extremely thin margins. Chilliwack MLA John Les believes the referendum would fail if passed now. As Chilliwack prepares to return to the PST/GST system come April 1, some are lamenting the public’s hasty decision. Others stand firm that the “Hated Sales Tax” won’t be missed. The opposition began when former BC Liberals Premier Gordon

Campbell introduced the tax in July 2009, two months after his reelection. This shocked voters, as the tax visibly shifted the burden of taxation from businesses, onto consumers. “It collects the tax at a different place in the economic chain of events. It collects it at the retail end, as opposed to collecting it during the process of production,” says Chilliwack Liberal MLA John Les. While the tax rate on most goods and services remained the same, consumers buying restaurant meals, tobacco products, gym memberships, over-the-counter

medications, and other items, had to pay an additional five per cent tax. The government argued that the HST created economic growth by making taxation more efficient, that extra income would fund social services, and that businesses would pass on their savings to consumers in the form of lower prices. Countering, the Fight HST lobby group argued that “The HST is a regressive tax that forces middle and lower income people to pay a greater proportion of their income to acquire the same goods and services as those with higher

incomes. The HST hurts poor people the most.” Although people in the City of Chilliwack voted to eliminate the HST, they were profoundly divided on the issue. In the Chilliwack riding, 49 per cent voted to reinstate the PST/GST. In Chilliwack-Hope, that margin was less than one per cent, with only 127 votes tipping the scale. Provincially, 55% voted to repeal the HST. “The government claimed it would be revenue neutral, but the claims were kind of hazy. I don’t think the public believed it,” says Vladimir Dvoracek, head of the economics department at the

University of the Fraser Valley. An independent report found that households paid an average of $350 more annually under the HST. After taking into account HST rebates and tax breaks, families paid $1.33 billion more in sales tax. “The first year the HST was introduced, sales tax revenue went up 17 per cent,” says Dvoracek. Most agree that the “broadbased” HST is simpler and more efficient because it taxed everything at one level. A feisty, golden-coloured chihuahua named Honey is being hailed as a hero after helping save eightyear-old Jenna’s life when she was being attacked by a pit bull last week. It’s not hard to see why Honey did what she did. The week following the attack, as a flock of reporters walk up the driveway of Anne Marie and Paul Desrochers’ home, fouryear-old Honey barks to let her owners know that people are on the property. She keeps her distance and sticks close to her family. Soon the barking stops. She cautiously approaches each person, sniffing their ankles when they’re not looking. She frequently returns back to the Desrochers and their granddaughter, Jenna, after investigating each visitor as if to tell them that everyone has her stamp of approval. Then Honey sees the neighbour’s dog, Chevy, saunter onto the property. Honey growls and barks, but never bites nor nips at Chevy. Chevy, an older dog, takes a few steps backwards staring innocently at Honey. Honey continues to bark. Chevy gets the point, turns around, and slowly goes home. Unfortunately, the situation wasn’t quite the same with a different neighbourhood dog during spring break. Jenna was playing in her grandparents’ evergreen-treed backyard in

Rosedale when the neighbour’s pit bull escaped its enclosure and attacked her. The dog had Jenna by the head. Honey, being the protective little dog that she is, began growling and barking at the pit bull. The pit bull released Jenna and turned its attention towards Honey. Fortunately, the pit bull’s owner was soon able to grab and leash her dog before it could do much further damage. Jenna was rushed to

the hospital where she received hundreds of stitches to her head and face. The pit bull was put down. A week later, Jenna, a Grade 3 Strathcona elementary student, has not yet returned to school and will be recovering at home for a while. On Tuesday afternoon, she is sitting inside her grandparent’s house on a black leather couch beside her grandmother. Jenna is shy and quiet as a hand-

ful of media ask her questions. Honey bounces around at Jenna’s feet, turning in circles a few times before jumping up onto the couch and onto Jenna’s lap. “They’re best buddies,” says Anne Marie Desrochers, looking over at the two. Still excited from all of the visitors, Honey’s eyes are wide and her ears are perked straight up. Honey turns herself around and wiggles her way underneath Jenna’s

left arm, clearly looking for some attention. Jenna gently pats Honey’s soft head and scratches her behind the ears. A few minutes pass and Honey’s breathing has slowed, her ears are relaxed, and eyes begin to close. City officials are still on track with plans for the Vedder Bridge replacement. However it’s completely contingent upon senior levels of government coming through with matching grants, so there is no timeline affixed to it. “It’s been identified as a definite need,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. Vehicle traffic across the river is increasing, especially in summer time. Even though the project is listed in the 2014 column in the city’s comprehensive municipal plan for $9.5 million, it is because the city has to effectively plan for the project, to be ready to replace the bridge when the other two-thirds of the infrastructure funding come through. It’s like a placeholder in the 2014 budget. The design for the bridge replacement is well under way, and they’re saving up for the expense, which will be a little more than $3 million. But it’s not happening yet. “So unfortunately we have to wait,” she said. “It has caused some optimism in the community.” Cultus Lake Park Chair Sacha Peter commented earlier this week that the issue was of interest to Cultus Lake Park residents, and a few tweets mentioned the topic as well. “It shows the level of excitement in the community over the project is high, so maybe that will bode well for us in terms of grants,” said Gaetz. Carbon offsets ‘not credible,’ auditor says in scathing report offsets being a critical factor in the decision,” Doyle’s report states. “In industry terms, they would be known as ‘free riders’ – receiving revenue ($6 million between the two) for something that would have happened anyway.” Darkwoods, a 55,000-hectare property near Kootenay Lake, was purchased as a forest reserve by the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 2008. Doyle notes that the decision to buy the land was made in 2006, and a carbon offset feasibility study was not completed until January, 2009. EnCana’s project diverted gas from flares to drilling. The audit found that “the company started the project in 2008 and had already converted many gas wells by the time they met with the Pacific Carbon Trust in 2009,” and the offset payments were not a factor in the decision to proceed. VICTORIA – Two carbon capture projects that were the largest beneficiaries of B.C.’s multimillion-dollar “carbon neutral government” program did not provide credible carbon offsets for emissions from government operations, Auditor General John Doyle concludes. In a report released Wednesday, Doyle said a West Kootenay forest reserve called Darkwoods and a flaring elimination project by EnCana Corp. at its Fort Nelson natural gas operations accounted for nearly 70 per cent of carbon credits paid by the government’s agency, the Pacific Carbon Trust. “Encana’s project was projected to be more financially beneficial to the company than its previous practices, regardless of offset revenue, while the Darkwoods property was acquired without

Voters threw out the HST in an uncharacteristic fast and powerful sweep within two years. Campbell also resigned, and the Liberals’ approval rating going into the May 2013 election is lower than that of the NDP.

“It’s a place where real democracy worked. I never thought that there could be a recall on this, and there is. It shows that when something is brought in that people don’t like, there is a mechanism to kick it out,” says Dvoracek. But Liberal MLA Les sees it differently. “Political referendums are a brutal method to use to establish economic policy. If BC NDP leaders hope to capitalize on the BC Liberals’ missteps, they need to step up their game and prove to voters there are good reasons to vote for their party. The notion that a vote for one is a vote against the other is simply not good enough reason – by itself – to return to power a party that has had its own shortcomings in the past in the transparency department. Pundits and pollsters might, indeed, be right that a backlash against Liberals’ mismanagement of their current mandate will result in a win for the NDP. But it should be realized that voters are in the throes of a crisis of confidence with the political process itself. They have not simply lost faith in the BC Liberals – they have lost faith in politicians of all stripes. In the political game, the NDP’s release of leaked memos concerning Liberal tactics in wooing ethnic voters was a bona fide win. But the NDP’s reluctance – to this date – to follow up such gains by presenting a detailed platform of its own is more than a little troubling, particularly when the BC Conservatives seem to be firing off platform statements every other day. If New Democrats think the best strategy is to hang fire and keep quiet in the expectation that the Conservatives’ sabre-rattling will be sufficient to split the right-wing vote, it smacks of a cynicism equal to anything Liberal strategists have promulgated. The NDP must stand for something, not just against something. Presenting a convincing vision is what it will take for NDP leader Adrian Dix to ultimately put to rest a horrible past blunder in which he falsified the date of a memo to provide an alibi for former premier Glen Clark, who was feeling the heat in a probe into alleged corruption. Dix has apologized and acknowledged he “owns” his past mistakes. Dix may have learned some hard lessons about honesty since he was Clark’s chief of staff. And his refusal to fight “dirty” in a mud-slinging battle with his political foes may reflect a genuine desire to focus on issues. If that’s the case, the time is more than nigh to present these issues in a cohesive campaign, rather than a series of statements by Dix and NDP critics hewing to a general philosophy. In contrast to the stumbles of others, the NDP has said it will provide a platform of promises that can be kept. So far, we are still waiting. ~ Black Press

Ottawa takes the lead on skills training

VICTORIA – The B.C. election campaign that’s about to get underway will feature lots of talk about skills training. It will be everyone’s top priority, along with a dozen other top priorities. But since elections are no time to deal with serious issues, don’t expect much frank discussion about ways to redirect our increasingly soft, urban society toward useful work. Somebody might be offended. The B.C. Liberals see lots of skilled, technical jobs on the horizon, but they cut their skills training budget and many of their MLAs are also looking at a career change. The B.C. school system, like that of other provinces, still pushes kids to university programs that lead to coffee-serving jobs and the need for another round of training. This has been going on since

the 1970s, and it’s not confined to B.C. The B.C. NDP apparently expects to coast to victory with the same empty rhetoric about “income inequality” and student debt that they’ve been using for years. Their only disTom cernible intent is to FLETCHER return control over how many apprentices can be on a job site to industrial unions, which severely restrict it, squeezing out small business. This team’s ideas are mostly left over from the last industrial revolution. Fortunately there is a mid-term federal government that has acted. Last week’s federal budget launches new programs that the next

B.C. government will have to go along with. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government didn’t claw back post-secondary funds from B.C. and other inept provinces, as some had feared. What we got from Ottawa was social engineering, Conservative style. The centrepiece is the “Canada Job Grant,” a $5,000 grant to employers willing to match it and train an unemployed person. To qualify, the province has to match as well, for a total $15,000 commitment to one worker who will have a job to go to. Delta-Richmond East MP KerryLynne Findlay was one of the Conservatives out to promote the budget. She said when the Canada Job Grant is fully rolled out, it will fund training for 130,000 people a year. Some will be young people, but there will also be older work-

ers whose skills need upgrading. “If they’re willing to look at the jobs that are available and understand that that’s their best shot at making a living and being able to support their own families some day, we want to be sure that the opportunities are there,” Findlay said. The difference is that it has to be what an employer needs, not what the student might prefer. It’s a public-private partnership, as we have seen with modern public works. Findlay acknowledged that even with a big push on training, Canada will still need to import foreign workers. In B.C. we are bracing for an unprecedented resource boom, much of it in the B.C. Interior and north. That’s one reason for a $241 million increase over five years to the federal Income Assistance

Program for aboriginal reserves. The new money is available only if the community leadership commits to a mandatory training component. They didn’t call it Idle No More, but that’s the gist of it. Of course, no worker or province or band council is required to participate. They have the option to leave the federal money on the table. But the NDP should note that the Canada Job Grant applies to union-run apprenticeship schools as well as those in community colleges and technical institutes. Saying no isn’t much of a choice. Whatever grand promises the B.C. Liberals and NDP have written into their yet-to-be-released election platforms, they will need to find the money to participate.

Move to renewable energy overdue Never before has our economy been more directly underpinned by the health of our ecology, our environment. On the negative side: the financial costs of climate change are striking home even before we reach the pivotal climate change make-break levels forecast by scientists. The devastation to property and lives, the loss of jobs and other economic setbacks, from natural catastrophes like Hurricane Sandy are considerable. Record-breaking heat and drought in Australia is merely another example of how threats to our environment are devastating our economies as well. On the positive side: the renewable green energy industry has not only proven to be viable in Germany and China, it has also been shown to be of much greater net economic benefit to national economies

than fossil fuels. (Despite its maturity the fossil fuel industry still relies upon and receives substantial subsidization in Canada and the USA.) Green energy tends to create employment at 5-10 times the rate of fossil fuel projects. And profits and spinoff economic benefits tend to be more broadly distributed. Moving to renewable energy is not only seriously overdue, its good business. The Feb. 27 press release from Laurie Throness (BC Liberal candidate for Chilliwack-Hope) calling on NDP incumbent Gwen O’Mahony to declare the same unequivocal support for the LNG industry – proposed by the BC Liberal government in the recent Throne Speech – is based on a great assumption, and a tenuous thread. The assumption is that LNG proliferation is widely to the benefit of B.C., and the tenuous thread is that 1,000 local jobs are

affected by said proliferation. The current bonanza in LNG production across the continent is based on the fracking process – one that poses sober questions about harm to our environment, serious health risks to the public, and wasteful and destructive uses of other natural resources such as water. These need to be addressed; in the meantime the Liberal government’s Throne Speech proposal is widely seen as wild speculation based on 30 year projections that fly in the face of current period economics. Throness’ blind support for this speculative program – and implication that other candidates’ lack of vocal support is tantamount to betrayal of local economics – is frivolous. It is built on a house of cards.

However, a strong sense of NIMBYism, and relentless badgering by certain wellfunded special interest groups, has stifled the exploration of potentially rich mineral deposits that could result in foreign investment, economic development, and thousands of jobs for British Columbians from ongoing production. I feel the concerns of these special interest groups are grossly exaggerated with little or no regard to the science or the social well

being of communities. We have to keep in mind that the land area actually impacted by mineral exploration in B.C. is much less than .01% of our total land base. And the actual likelihood that exploration activity will result in a mine, after two levels of environmental review and economics are taken into consideration, is minuscule. Yet the benefits are great and could potentially provide livelihoods for entire communities for generations to come and contribute directly and indirectly to the growth of many, many

associated small businesses. That is why we need a government in B.C. that will stay the course and support mining exploration and all the benefits that it brings to us as British Columbians. This election, I would therefore encourage everyone to consider which potential government can best facilitate ongoing mineral exploration activities in B.C. and provide certainty for potential investors while ensuring that sensitive areas and parks are protected. Care for your Easter lily Easter lilies are still very much a part of the Easter season, not only for their serene beauty, but also for their enticing fragrance. One whiff of their perfume, and you just know it’s Easter! I have been unable to find exactly when lilies were first grown commercially for the Brian Easter season, but old growers’ Minter records from the 1920’s indicate that at that time, they were in production in North America. The lily was chosen because of its long, pure white trumpets, enticing perfume, and its ability to be forced into bloom for a specific season. ‘Croft’ was one of the first varieties selected, and I can remember my father growing them back in the early 50’s. They were lovely but, very much like early poinsettias, it was a trick to keep the foliage on until Easter. In the 60’s the ‘Ace Lily’ was introduced, and later ‘Nellie White’, which is one of the finest longiflorum varieties. Today, virtually all Easter lily bulbs are grown in Oregon. Quality bulbs make the difference between success and failure for many lily growers, so it is always a mad scramble to harvest the bulbs at the right time and have them shipped immediately to the growers’ cold storage facilities to begin a precooling process.

The forcing period for lilies is about 100 days, and timing is everything. There is not a huge demand for Easter lilies on Easter Monday. With the Easter season changing each year and with variable weather factors, it is a tricky business. Because of the many temperature fluctuations during the forcing period, it is important to keep your lily as cool as possible in your home. They love an east or north window. Water them thoroughly, then let them dry out only slightly before you water again. If you keep them too wet or too dry, the bottom leaves will yellow and fall off. As each flower finishes, cut it off to keep the plant looking fresh. It’s also a good idea to pick out the yellow anthers as each blossom opens to prevent them discolouring the pure white blooms and to protect all those noses that venture near to

smell the lovely perfume from getting a dusting of yellow pollen. More importantly, it saves a dry cleaning bill if the pollen gets on your clothes. Easter lilies are not true hardy bulbs, but they can be planted outside in a protected area to build up the bulbs for next year. You will often be treated to a second flowering this fall if you are lucky. Oriental lilies, like ‘Mona Lisa’ and ‘Stargazer’, are beautiful alternatives to Easter lilies. They both come in lovely shades of pink and are highly perfumed. After flowering, they can be planted in your garden with your other hardy lilies for a beautiful display year after year. Lilies are only available for the next few days, so if you would love to fill your home with their amazing perfume, do pick one up to celebrate Easter.

During the 1960s, Vancouver was an emerging city. Young people searching to find an alternative way of life began calling it their home. It was a lively, colourful time and many people hopped on the counter-cultural bandwagon. The city was growing with a variety of attitudes and perspectives and at times, this led to contention. For Jane Aitken, who had been born and was being raised in the heart of the city, it was just a place where fun happened. “I grew up at a time when kids weren’t on short leashes. You could go where you wanted to be. It was a great time. It was an amazing time,” she reflected. Back in those days, her family owned the Main Hotel in Vancouver but eventually they moved on and her father began working as a comptroller for Eagle Motors. “Mom always worked but she never did just one thing. She would just land at a job, filling in here or there. Then someone would ask her to do this or that. I guess this is where I get it from,” she giggled. When Jane was just six years old, her father had a major heart attack and was unable to do the required maintenance

around the house. “I quickly developed a sense of responsibility at a young age. I started mowing the lawn and doing a lot of the yard work,” she said. Jane enjoyed being able to express her creative side while Ana she Macedo was in school. She loved art but decided not to pursue it as a career. “I had no clear idea of what I wanted to do after graduating. As it turned out, I was asked to work as a receptionist for a doctor’s office and ended up staying for about six years. When the doctor retired, I moved on and took a position with BC Hydro’s Elco Credit Union. I eventually worked my way up to a loans officer,” she said. During this time, Jane was married and gave birth to their first son, Aaron. Soon after, the young couple got the opportunity to move to Greendale. “The price was right and so we left everything and moved out here on faith. I’ll never forget it. We moved out in February and there was tons of

snow on the ground. Mt. Cheam looked like the Alps to me. I turned to my husband and asked what we were doing but it’s all been for the good,” she smiled. Their second son, Mathew, was born in Chilliwack and since Jane was taking a break from the corporate world, to stay home with her young sons, she got into childcare as a means to supplement the family income. When the children were older, she returned to the workforce and went into retail. “I did that for awhile and then in the early 80s started at Safeway which eventually led to work in the promotions department at the radio station.” Ever the entrepreneur, something that she admits comes from her family’s background in the hotel business; Jane started her own company after her stint at the radio station. “I started Way to Go Promotions and did a variety of things including putting together two Country Harvest Festivals for the BIA and the Christmas Village downtown,” she said. After coordinating a series of larger-scale events, Jane made the decision to get back into the food business and took on a position as a rep for the major meat distributors. “I was coordinating the sampling for Grimm’s Meats, Harvest, Maple Leaf and Schneider’s and others. I went to trade shows and basically marketed their

From there, she became the manager of the Starbucks at the Chilliwack Mall Safeway and admits that this was a period of extensive growth both professionally and personally. “There was a lot of learning going on that’s for sure,” she laughed. She was awarded a Siren’s award for customer service but after years of essentially being married to the job, it was time to move on. Jane landed at Canadian Tire and for the past five years has been their promotions coordinator. Aside from her regular day to day responsibilities, the part of her job that she enjoys the most is heading up their Jumpstart Day. This special day is the signature program of the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “This is a national charity that helps to identify and support community-based programs that give a boost to financially challenged families across Canada. On May 25th from 2 – 4 p.m. we’ll be in the parking lot at Canadian Tire raising funds but most importantly creating an awareness of the program. It’s going to be a fun day and everyone is welcome to attend. The focus of the day will be on youth so there’ll be many things for the young people to enjoy. Our community is so giving and I really appreciate all of the local response,” she enthused. As she sits back and takes a moment to collect her thoughts and reflect, Jane concedes that her life has been nothing if not interesting.

ing to BC Hydro. But British Columbians still managed to reduce their electricity usage. Since 2007, the World Wildlife Fund has been encouraging people around the globe to switch off their lights for one hour, one day a year. “It’s a simple way to show you care, but it also sends a powerful message: That together, we can make a difference,” states the WWF. This year that opportunity came last Saturday, March 23, at 8:30 p.m. B. C. saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity, a two per cent reduction in the electricity load. This is the equivalent of turning off 10 million 12.5watt LED light bulbs. Last year, savings were only 121 megawatt hours. The weight of this year’s savings fell on Vancouver Island communities, which took

the top 11 spots, out of the communities for which data is available. Comox and Courtenay each cut their usage by about 10 per cent during that hour. Chilliwack was the province’s third-worst per former, cutting energy usage by 0.3 per cent. Only Salmon Arm and Enderby saved less, at 0.2 per cent each. Notably, Vancouver and surrounding areas did not do well either, hovering at around the two per cent mark. BC Hydro was able to calculate electricity usage to the hour because of power smart meters. Residents can also track their exact usage online, which can reduce how much electricity they use. The battle against ‘mindless eating’ EAT from page 30 and satisfying hunger. Everyday, we are presented with endless opportunities to eat. Our pantries and cupboards are stocked; the grocery store or coffee shop may offer samples; there may be leftovers from your kid’s dinner. If you eat pretty well, exercise, are not losing weight (or perhaps you are even gaining weight) and are not sure why, mindless eating could be the culprit. A lick of peanut butter when making your kid’s lunch or a small handful of chocolate chips may not seem like much, but it all adds up. Like most things in life worth doing, eliminating mindless eating takes work. Below are five steps to stop mindless eating: 1. Keep a food journal. Record absolutely everything that goes into your mouth. Even if it’s just two Smarties that managed to find their way to your lips (those sneaky Smarties!), write it down. As insignificant as a small morsel of food may be, tracking it creates awareness of the food you eat. 2. Plan each meal ahead of

time. Don’t leave anything to chance. Plan absolutely each meal and snack that day. If you’re going to be out for the afternoon, plan where you’ll be going for lunch and what you’re going to order. 3. Make sure that everything and anything you eat is from your own plate or bowl. This is a simple way to eliminate ‘opportunity eating’- eating just because food is in front of you. This also means you’ll say good bye to taking a few handfuls of chips from the bowl on the coffee table or eating appies straight from the tray. Instead, you are forced to portion out a serving on a plate so you’re aware of how much

you are consuming. 4. Eat according to the clock and your hunger. Waiting too long to eat makes sticking to an eating plan very difficult. Eat before you become grumpy, light headed, or cannot focus to eat. At the same time, if you are used to going all day without eating and you don’t get hungry, eat according to the clock. Your body will soon become accustomed to eating frequently and start showing signs of hunger. 5. Build a support network. Having support may be the most important step in combatting mindless eating. Check in with a coach, or accountability partner on a regular basis to keep you heading in the right direction. Like any new skill, resisting mindless eating takes persistence and practice. In the words of our dietician Sharon Fast: “Remember that progress, not perfection is what’s important”.

In a split second, the Chiefs’ mindset changed from ‘we’ve got a chance’ to ‘we’re done.’ “It’s tough to go out like that, but sometimes you don’t get the bounces going your way,” Thompson mused. “You want to be able to look back at it and say you left it all out there, which we did. We battled hard. Everyone knows that. We’ve just got to keep our heads up.” Thompson sat in that locker room Monday night knowing it was his last time. The Philadelphia native goes home next season to play at Penn State. Ten of the 2012-13 Chiefs will likely be in different uniforms next fall. “I started thinking about

it maybe heading into overtime, and it really hit me after the puck went into our net,” Thompson said. “It’s the first time I’ve been through this and it’s surreal. You don’t think it’s over, but it really is and it’s tough to swallow.” Thompson is a guy who’s grown up with the franchise, one of the few transplants remainng from the 2010-11 Quesnel Millionaires. Once he’s gone, Graboski and Kiefer McNaughton (who left and came back) will be the last Mills standing. “It’s been the best three years of my life, thus far, and I wouldn’t change anything that I’ve done,” Thompson said. “I remember getting dropped off from that dinky plane in Quesnel like it was yesterday, and ending up

here has been a great experience. I’ve played with a great bunch of guys and I’m going to miss them for sure.” Thompson said he’ll take a couple days to let his emotions settle down. Then it’s on with life and preparing to join the Nittany Lions. “A couple days to relax and let it sink in, then it’s right back to work,” he said, before heading back to the dressing room one last time. ● The BCHL playoffs now continue without Chilliwack. Surrey and Victoria/ Alberni Valley square off in the Coastal conference final, while Penticton and Westside clash in the Interior.

I’m always disappointed when a Chilliwack Chiefs season comes to an end. This year’s team was fun to watch and gave it a great effort right through an exhaustive playoff schedule. No complaints at all about the team. I should also point out that I am speaking from a fan’s perspective and in no way do I mean to imply how the players and or hockey staff should or do feel. If you’re a Bill Simmons (ESPN) fan, you might be familiar with his levels-oflosing columns. Stealing from that idea, I have three levels of disappointment when the Chiefs season ends. There’s the ‘hat’s off’ level, which happens when I watch them lose to a much better team. This is the easiest level to take. This has only happened a few times in 18 seasons. The most recent example was last season when the Chiefs were taken out in the opening round of the playoffs by the juggernaut Penticton Vees. In those situations, it’s disappointing to see them lose, but hey, hat’s off to the other team for being better. The most difficult level to take is the ‘kick to the groin’ level. This is when the Chiefs have been the heavy favorite and lost, which has happened twice. In 2002 the Chiefs lost in a one-game semi-final to OCN at the Royal Bank Cup. Play that game 10 times and the Chiefs win nine. It was tough to watch, but not as tough as the 1996 playoff loss to the Langley Thunder. Chilliwack lost that series on home ice in game seven. Shawn Horcoff was hurt and unable to play, but that loss, much like a kick to the groin, hurt for a long time. The middle level is what I’m experiencing after this latest series. I don’t even have a silly name for it. It’s the most common type and it happens when two teams are fairly evenly matched. It happens when you lose the type of series that can turn on one big save or one lucky bounce or a referee’s call. Disappointing, but one team had to lose so it’s not overly difficult to get over it. This season is a lot different than last year, when the Vees dominated the BCHL like few teams had before. This season I really believed that there were five teams that were good enough to win it; Penticton, West Kelowna, Surrey, Chilliwack and Victoria. There were a handful of teams that were likely not good enough to win it all, but were definitely capable of upsetting a favorite; Prince George, Merritt, Alberni Valley and Nanaimo. It’s unfortunate that two of the favorites, Surrey and Chilliwack, had to play a best-of-five second round series against each other. It’s similar to the Chiefs first two seasons in Chilliwack when they were knocked out in the second round by Vernon. Those teams were not only two of the best teams in the league but two of the best teams in the country. A hockey dressing room after a playoff series loss is very much like a funeral. The silence is deafening as the players sit at their stalls, overwhelmed by feelings of disappointment. They lift their heads and look at their teammates, knowing that many won’t be back next year. It is the last time they’ll be together. There are tears. Lots of tears. Young men ages 16-20 break down, crushed by emotion. And into this scene wades the sports writer for the least-anticipated interview of the year. Captain David Thompson has to do it, and his eyes are blurry and red as he holds out his hand. “It’s an odd feeling, a bittersweet feeling because you know you’re moving on to other things, but you don’t want to leave the group of guys that you’ve spent the last two or three years with,” he said. Things might have been easier had his Chiefs lost in different fashion. If the Surrey Eagles had just whalloped them in game five, they might have had more time to prepare for this moment. But that’s not the way it went down. On goals by Austin Plevy and Spencer Graboski, Chilliwack forced do-or-die game three to overtime, where they died suddenly. Just two minutes and 41 ticks into the extra session,

Tips for energetic Easter exercise Week four of the Kin’s Green Fighters Challenge found Carolyn Putt scaling mountains. Tired of the being cooped up indoors, the Chilliwack native took advantage of the good weather to take a hike up Mt. Thom, and around Hayward Lake. “I’m excited for the snowline to creep upwards more and more with this sunny weather, so that I can venture up a few more of the beautiful moun-

tains,” Putt said. “Who needs a gym membership when you can just get outside and do something?” The latest weekly challenge had Putt and other contestants coming up with five ideas for a healthier easter. Putt’s first idea was a Rabbit relay race. “Split your family into two teams and line ‘em up,” she explained. “The first person on each team puts on bunny ears and hops to the other end of the

grassy area. They have to eat a carrot dangling from a string (no hands for adults), then hop back and hand off the bunny ears.” Another of her ideas was to gather all available recyclable materials to see who can come up with the most creative Easter hat (or bonnet). And a third idea involved melting, instead of eating, chocolate to use as a face mask. “I kept getting new

ideas while compiling my list, so it was hard to narrow it down to five,” she said. The Kin’s Green Fighters Challenge sees 13 Lower Mainland contestants competing in 13 weekly challenges to see who can improve their health and fitness the most. Kayakers tear through Tamihi The Chilliwack Centre of Excellence hosted the Rich Weiss Memorial slalom races last Sunday, with paddlers taking on the Tamihi Rapids in 10 races. On the men’s K1 (kayak) side, John Allen took the open race with a time of 111.19, beating Joel Martin (116.69) and Ken Daugherty (129.49). The K1 cadet class went to Avery Wilkins and the junior class went to

Sam Fletcher, with a time of 135.00. The K1 masters race was won by David Zimmermen with a time of 123.77, edging David Johnson (129.57) and Rufus Knapp (131.10). The C1 (canoe) race went to Craig Allen with a time of 122.21. On the women’s side, Jazmyne Denhollander took the open race with a time of 117.85. Ally Moore won the open plastic

division at 317.94. The masters race went to Lisa Day with a time of 159.47. The women’s K2 race, teaming a cadet with an adult, went to Isabel Taylor and John Allen. Golden gymnasts Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club hosted their 18th annual Gymnastics Invitational this past weekend, with several Chilliwack natives competing. More than 650 athletes, competitive and recreational, made the trip to the Fraser Valley, and Twister gymnasts hauled in 24 gold, 38 silver and 29 bronze medals. Chilliwack’s Jeremy Gaspar tackled the national open division, getting gold on the vault and silver on the floor, pommel horse, rings, high bar and all-around.

Two local girls competed in level three argo. Ella Palmer took gold on the floor, silver on the beam and bronze on the vault and all-around. Brienna Gaspar won gold on the beam and all-around, adding silver on the vault and bronze on the floor. Lexi Gaspar (level two open) won gold on the bars, silver on the vault and all-around and bronze on the beam. Leanne Hellewell (level two tyro) claimed gold on the beam and Heather Vanhouck (level two argo) earned bronze on the beam.

BULL Frank W.

Frank W. Bull (Frankie, Papa) passed away peacefully on March 23, 2013 while in the careful, BULL loving care of the Chilliwack Cascade Hospice. Frank was born on January 21, 1925 in North Bay Ontario and spent most of his early years, in and around the Northern Ontario and greater Toronto areas. In the 40’s, Frank served in the RCAF and was posted to a US base in Alaska during WWII. Later on, Frank was posted to Vancouver Island until 1946 where he subsequently started his own logging operation in Salt Spring Island. In 1952, Frank married Jessie (Tess) Mackenzie and went on to co-found the Macquinna Hotel in Tofino. Together, they ran a burgeoning business and started a family which included the birth of Fredrick (Rick), Robert (Bob) and Shirley-Anne. In the early 60’s, the Bull family moved to Chilliwack, where son Ronald (Ron) was born. Frank founded Acacia Mineral Development in the 70’s which he ran until his retirement in the late 80’s. Frankie was one of the last known “Good Guys” and the last survivor of his siblings, he was proud to be in his 89th year. Known for being gentle, quiet and reserved Frankie was also known for a sense of humor and for taking on the “good fight”. They just don’t make them like that anymore. Frank was predeceased by his parents George and Gertrude, his wife Tess, daughter Shirley-Anne, son Bob as well as his siblings, Henry, Clyde, Esmond, Ron, Gordon, Gerry, Bernice, Audrey and Vivian. Frank is survived by his sons Rick and Ron, granddaughters, Roschelle, Charlene and Sheena, grandsons Shawn and Taylor, son in-law Dan Miller and daughter inlaw Victoria. Frank has numerous nieces and nephews located in BC, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec. He cherished all of you deeply. Frankie, Papa will be sadly missed but often remembered. A memorial service will be held at The Chilliwack Legion branch 4 located at 9350 Mary St, Chilliwack on March 28th. The service will begin at 1pm. Frank will be laid to rest at Lit-

(nee Edmondson) Marion Harvey passed away on Monday, March 25 in Chilliwack, BC at the age of 85 years. HARVEY Born in Rosedale, BC, Marion spent her school-age years in the Chilliwack area. After earning her teaching certificate, she taught in Kaslo, Powell River and Surrey. She married husband, Maurice, in 1952 and they settled and raised their three children in Coquitlam, BC. She resumed her teaching career in 1966 and taught in several elementary schools in the Coquitlam District until her retirement in 1988. Until recently, she was active in the Retired Teachers Association and the Kiwanis service club. Marion will be lovingly remembered by her brother, Evan (Velma); her children, Don (Karen), Lois (Allan) and Joan (Mike); grandchildren, Christina, Jennifer (Steve), Sarah (Steve), Lisa and Brian; and great-grandchildren, Sophia and Bruce. She was sadly predeceased by husband, Maurice; siblings, Leyland (Mary), Gerald, Jean (Barry) and Audrey (Ken). April 5, 1924 March 24, 2013 W a l l y passed away in Chilliwack on March 24, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He was born HOCALUK in Zetland, Alberta on April 5, 1924. He is survived by his son Lorne(Linda), their children Mike and Paul, great grandchildren Michelle, Amber, and Jaymee, great great grandson, Leo; daughter Yvette, his sister Florence(Jack) Dickinson, also several nieces and nephews. Wally was predeceased by his wife Anita of 61 years of marriage. The family moved from Ontario to Agassiz and later to Chilliwack. Many will recall him as their barber. A retired Veteran, who was active as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, in Agassiz. Wally was an avid fisherman and often accompanied by his wife, spent many summer weekends camping and fishing various lakes in southern BC. Wally loved music and was an accomplished violinist. In his younger years he played in several bands. Later on when he was no longer able to play the violin, Wally enjoyed symphonies, and musical productions. Always a gentleman, Wally was a quiet reserved man, kind and generous. He loved the Lord and a faithful attendant at daily Mass at St.Mary’s . He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, great great grandfather, and had many friends, who will miss him including Lucy, a very special friend. Funeral Mass will be held from St.Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 8909 Mary St. Chilliwack on Wednesday, April 3 at 11;00 A.M. Followed by a reception at the Parish Hall. She developed great friendships everywhere she went and held a very close space in her heart for her Chilliwack friends Daisy-Anne and Michael Simpson, Sheryl Sharpe and Barry and Lois English. She cherished family, friends and life and would be the first to jump in a cold lake, play basketball with her granchildren or want to hike to the top of a mountain. She had a special passion for fishing and cooking, she loved knitting, gardening, her cat Smudge and dog Brandy, crafts, gardening, writing and always staying in touch with her children and grandchildren. She was the glue that held her and her husband’s family together. She enjoyed traveling to Ontario to spend time with her daughter Sabrina and grandson Kaiden and especially enjoyed her time at the cottage playing cards, drinking wine, playing with the cats and trekking through the back country with Barb and Richard. Donna Marie Mussell, 62, of Chilliwack, BC, went home to the Lord, Friday, March 22, 2013. She was born to Kevin Joseph Quilty and the late Esperanza Geraldine Curbello, August 2, 1950, in Vancouver, BC. MUSSELL Donna was the reigning Queen of Karaoke. In establishing her business “StarTrack”, she set the Karaoke standard since 1998. Not only did she sing beautifully, but she encouraged others to step out of their comfort zone and become all they could be. Donna was predeceased by her son Sean Quilty; mother Geraldine Curbello; sister Doreen Storey and nephew Dallas Deleen. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Fred Mussell, by her father, Kevin Quilty, and by three beautiful daughters: Colleen Curbelho-Quilty (Mike) of Chilliwack, BC; Donna RossQuilty (Collin), of New West-

minister, BC; and Sandra Vetterl (Rob), of Penticton, BC. and step children, Fred Jr., Robin, Jay and Owen. Donna is survived by her brother Donnie Marcher (Delores) of Burnaby BC; her sister Rita Cawthra (Bill) of Ladysmith, BC; her brother Kevin Quilty (Carolyn) of Hinton AB; and her sister Kathy Beauchamp (Rod) of Chilliwack, BC. She also is survived by six beautiful grandchildren and a seventh due this April, as well as Aunts, Uncles, nieces and nephews. For anyone wishing to send flowers, the family is requesting potted plants to go in Donna’s garden.
