Homicide detectives continue to investigate the death of 18-year-old Rachel Pernosky this week as condolences pour in over online networks. A candlelight vigil for the Mission teen was held last Thursday at Fraser River Heritage Park, and a benefit concert was organized last Friday at Snipers Pool Hall. Campaigns are also underway to establish a trust fund for Pernosky’s one-year-old son, Marco. A silent auction at the Optimist Talent Show for youth on April 5 will also benefit the Marco Trust Fund. Pernosky’s body was found near Old Orchard Road in Chilliwack last Tuesday after family and friends spent three days searching for the teen, who was reported missing on March 16. Continued on A7

D r. Ken Macquisten of Abbotsford is dealing with a first in his 30-year veterinary career – developing and fitting a permanent prosthetic leg for a large bird that required an amputation. The sandhill crane’s leg was shattered by a flying golf ball on the Country Meadows Golf Course in Richmond at the beginning of March. Myles Lamont, a wildlife biologist and consultant based in Langley, was called by Richmond city staff to capture the injured bird about four days after the accident. Lamont said sandhill cranes are rare in this part of Canada – they mainly live on the prairies – and this bird would have been the offspring of one of only four breeding

pairs in the Lower Mainland. He was born on the golf course, and is accustomed to people, making him tamer than even some of the cranes that Lamont raises in captivity. Lamont caught the bird and called Macquisten, whom he has worked with in the past, and brought the bird to the Whatcom Road

Veterinary Hospital. Macquisten said the lower portion of the crane’s leg was “dangling” and, when it wasn’t healing as hoped, he had to amputate it. He then crafted a makeshift prosthetic so that the crane would be able to stand. “You wouldn’t normally do this with a wild bird, but this one is so tame and so

special,” Macquisten said, adding that its rarity is also a factor. The crane – who has yet to be named – was then taken to Elizabeth’s Wildlife Centre in Abbotsford to convalesce. “He hobbles along just great,” confirmed Elizabeth Melnick, who runs the wildlife centre. The challenge now is developing a permanent leg that can withstand the elements, including the bird’s ability to walk over swampland without sinking into the mud. “Basically, it’s trial and error as you go. There really isn’t a manual for this one,” Macquisten said. The goal is to release the crane back on the golf course. Macquisten said he looks forward to that day – “as long as he (the bird) learns what the word ‘fore!’ means.”

Shots fired at car

A man is being treated in hospital after a shooting in Abbotsford on Friday in the area of Gladwin Road and Downes Road shortly after 10 p.m. “Witnesses reported seeing gunfire from one vehicle into another as both vehicles travelled east on Downes Road,” stated an Abbotsford Police Department press release. Minutes later, a 20-year-old man who is known to police arrived at the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, though injuries were non-life-threatening. No one has been arrested and the motive for the shooting is unclear, but officers do not believe it’s a random shooting. Shots were also fired on Gladwin Road, just in front of Chief Dan George Middle School, in an incident that appears to be linked to the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-8595225 or Crime Stoppers, 1-800222-8477.

A passerby spotted Pernosky’s body and called police. She was last seen around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday at her home in the 7700 block of Kite Street. Her cell phone and purse were still inside the house. Mission RCMP worked on the case in the initial stages and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was consulted early on because of the suspicious nature of her disappearance, and then brought in after her body was discovered. Police do not have any suspects or motive, but believe the attack was not random.

“Rachel was just 18 years old and a mother of a baby when her life was brutally taken from her. The person(s) who murdered her have left a hole in the lives of those who loved her, and child who will be without his mom,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, IHIT spokesperson. Almost 3,200 Facebook users have “Liked” the Find Rachel Pernosky page. Since Pernosky’s sister, Brittany, posted a statement saying, “The search is officially being called off, thanks everyone for your help, it won’t be forgotten,” family and friends and even those who didn’t know her, have been sharing their thoughts, outrage and sympathies on the site.

Remembering Taylor

Last week’s tragic chain of events that led to the death of Mark Taylor delivered a deeply grievous loss upon this city. Professionally and personally, Abbotsford mourns a committed community supporter and a friend. Abbotsford’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture was doing what he loved best – enjoying the outdoors – when the tragedy occurred. Taylor was skiing near Golden, B.C. with his daughter and another man when the weather turned bad. Taylor fell into a crevasse and perished. Now his family, friends and the city are left with memories of the man. Tributes have been flowing in to The News, and on social media sites, praising Taylor as a loyal public servant and a respected colleague. Abbotsford West MLA Mike de

Jong noted that much of the city’s recreational infrastructure is the result of “Mark’s vision and passion for improving the lives of families in our community.” Abbotsford MP Ed Fast credited Taylor with leaving behind “a legacy of excellence,” while Mayor Bruce Banman said Taylor “always had a joke to share, provided encouragement for challenges and rewards for even the smallest of successes.” Mark Duyns, of PacificSport Fraser Valley, said Taylor’s deeds will be “forever remembered.” As the city continues to grow, and new recreational facilities are created, it is likely and fitting that one be dedicated to Taylor’s memory. He was a man with passion, vision and a sense of humour. Above all, he was well loved by his family, and well liked by his friends. He will be sorely missed.

Other Hand Apparently, during Earth Hour Saturday, British Columbians “saved” 136 megawatts of electricity. So what I want to know is, where are we saving it? British Columbia, to the best of my knowledge, gets virtually all of its power from hydro generation. And while I’m not an electrician, I don’t know of any way to “save” electricity, other than in a battery. Therefore I have to conclude that rather than save we simply consumed, for one hour, a bit less than we normally do. The water, I’m sure still flowed through the turbines at the Bennett Dam, and all other hydro operations in B.C., unrelentingly generating electricity that to a small degree was “wasted.”

Just the same, it was an admirable effort and yes, we dined by candlelight Saturday, switching off most devices that consume power. Because of that, perhaps we did save a few cents off our hydro bill, though the cost of candles probably more than made up the difference. And admittedly, we probably could have done more – the computer was still “alive,” as were the electronics that run the TV and the yard lights that operate off a photocell. However, much as British Columbians like to pride themselves on leading in green initiatives, the only way we really would have made a savings was if we reduced the amount of oil or coal or natural gas that was consumed. So unless Burrard Thermal was running full tilt up to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, nothing other than awareness – needed, I will concede – was achieved in this exercise. However, the event was labeled “Earth” hour so if, by our example, other regions and nations that rely on fossil fuels or nuclear generation to create energy did as we did, then it was a success. In this province of enormous bounty,

we pride ourselves on the ability to consume clean energy, while at the same time exporting “dirty” energy in the form of coal, oil and natural gas. The argument supporting such trade, of course, is that to maintain the standard of living to which we are

There are those, and their numbers are growing dramatically, who argue that we must stop selling fossil fuels; that only by leaving the products in the ground will we ever clean up the Earth, reverse climate change and once again make it a happy planet. Conversely there are those who contend that if we do that, we will rapidly devolve into the Dark Ages, literally

and figuratively, with such things as education, health care and social services dispensed through shamans by the light of campfires. Both arguments appear to have merit. If we stop delivering goods to the world, someone else will step into the void and soon the cry of activists will be against the lack of services due to lack of revenues to support them. All this is not to say we shouldn’t try to do our bit by turning off the lights more often, though in B.C. that act is more window dressing than reality. What would have far more impact would be to park our cars for an extra hour every day, or permanently turn down the thermostat. It might make us feel better, but will that change China’s current relentless demand for “dirty” energy supplies? On the other hand, China may soon adopt its own curbs on fossil fuels because, unless it does so, that country’s air pollution will soon reach a point of literal unlivability for its citizens, least of which is the impact to global air quality. markrushton@abbynews.com

Seniors’ driving stats complicated

In response to “Seniors are safe drivers,” (March 21 edition of the Abbotsford News): The crash risk for older drivers is complicated – no one statistic can tell this story on its own. On the positive side, crash volumes for senior drivers in B.C. are among the lowest of all age groups. This is due to a combination of factors, including years of experience seniors have behind the wheel and the fact that they tend to drive less than younger drivers. However, research also indicates that older drivers tend to have high crash rates per kilometre driven. When comparing crashes per kilometre driven, the crash rate for drivers aged 75 or over was found to be similar to the crash rate for new drivers, aged 16-24. This means that while senior drivers may drive less, they’re more at risk when they do so. It is also important to clarify ICBC’s role in the process of reexaminations for drivers aged 80 and over. The decision on whether a senior is allowed to continue to drive is not

No references to ‘child porn’ Abbotsford Police discontinue use of term

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has discontinued the use of the words “child pornography” in its communications, in keeping with a resolution passed by two other organizations. Instead, the APD will refer to “images of child sexual abuse” or “images of child sexual assault,” except when referring to the section of the Crimi n a l C o d e t h a t a d dresses “child pornogGOERKE raphy.” The matter was approved at the recent monthly meeting of the Abbotsford Police Board. Deputy Chief Len Goerke brought the issue to the board, based on a resolution previously initiated and approved by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). The matter has also been passed by the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, of which Goerke is vice-president. Goerke said using the word “pornography” is inaccurate and “undermines the reality of the situation.” “We’re sanitizing what is the sexual and physical abuse of children,” he said. The issue was brought to the APD’s attention by Catherine Dawson, a member of the Abbotsford CFUW chapter. In a presentation at the CFUW’s annual general meeting, Dawson proposed the resolution, calling for the provincial government to abolish the term “child pornography” on its websites, research

materials and oral communication. “When we use the words ‘child pornography’ or ‘kiddie porn’ or ‘child porn’

or ‘child erotica,’ we are minimizing the crime, its impact and effect,” she stated. The Abbotsford

Police Board will now forward the resolution to the B.C. Association of Police Boards for consideration.

Auction raises $120,000 Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Clarence Tuin lost the beard he loved, but it played a role in raising $120,000 for food aid in Africa. Tuin, who is the volunteer representative of Foodgrains Bank B.C. along with his wife Jenny, shaved the beard he’s had for 25 years at the annual Make a Difference Sale at McClary Stockyards off Sumas Way. The auction was held March 21 to raise funds for Foodgrains Bank,

which assists impoverished people around the globe by improving health care and nutrition, and providing clean water to people in Third World nations. This year’s auction raised about the same amount as the year prior. Tuin has organized the event for years, but this one was different. Before the auction, he made a bet with his son Ron that if he could raise $5,000 for Foodgrains Bank, then Tuin would

He says the biggest change over the years is that facilities have evolved to offer the full experience, including better dining, live entertainment and electronic gaming.

An Abbotsford photographer is holding a fundraiser for Cyrus Centre, a drop-in centre for at-risk youth. Ashley Martens will hold a marathon of photo sessions on April 13. Starting a kitchen reno By Maggie Calloway Making the decision to renovate your kitchen is one of the most exciting and scary decisions you can make. A kitchen is more than just another room; in many ways it’s the very heart of the home and you need to get it right. Hundreds of decisions will have to be made, each one dependent on the next. No wonder it is so daunting. Once you decide the time is right to go ahead with a new kitchen, the first step is to do your homework then hire a contractor who can make your dream come true. Klondike Contracting founder Eric Schapira understands how important this room in particular is to a family and he has some advice to give as you begin the process. “The first thing is to determine what the budget is and what it is you want to achieve. Some people are concerned about resale value and don’t want to overspend for the area so I advise speaking to a realtor who is familiar with the neighbourhood,” he says. “The other point to consider when setting a budget is how long are you planning on living in the house? If you plan on staying in the house for over five years I tell clients to renovate for their own enjoyment and don’t worry about resale. If you are planning on moving within five years know

Grotenhuis John Adolph John passed away on March 21, 2013 with his wife Shelley and children Lisa, John and Don by his side. John will also be missed by his son-in-law Jared; grandkids Samantha, Travis and Bryce; his parents John and Willy; brothers Neil (Holly) and Everett (Dorothy); sister Betty (Jeff); sister-in-law Carolyn; his nieces, nephews; and all those whose lives he touched. The family would like to thank the nurses on the Palliative Care Ward for their excellent care and compassion during his last weeks. A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, March 28 at 1:30pm at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford. All are welcome. Also survived by her brother, Roger (Janet); niece, Rebecca; nephew, Benjamin; & great-niece, Cassidy. Arlie, a graduate of UBC, taught in the Coquitlam School District for 37 years. She was very involved in after school activities and the Girl Guide movement. She loved to travel and spent many summers seeing the world, never going to the same place twice. A life rich with community involvement included several years with Operation Red Nose, the United church, Go Go Grannies, The Garden Club, Scandinavian Club, Ladies Golf Club, Sons of Norway and “The Order of the Rose” Beta Sigma Phi. Arlie will be deeply missed by so many. Special thanks to the care and concern of the surgeon and nursing staff of 4 North at the Royal Columbian Hospital.
