Cranbrook has been on the move and continues to grow with the community, and with this growth it brings a more diverse collection of goods and services. 2009 marked the opening of the Ashley Furniture Homestore and the world’s largest furniture manufacturer to Cranbrook. While our family has been in the furniture business for 34 years, our intent was not simply to offer the largest variety of products for your entire home, but to take the knowledge and experience we have gained and start something new. The opportunity to become an Ashley Homestore just made sense as the goal was to incorporate a seamless experience from start to finish. We would be able to order product faster than any other manufacturer and have the largest selection available to us. Add knowledgeable staff to provide superior service within a relaxed shopping atmosphere was paramount. The final step was to provide a deluxe delivery service and to set everything up right inside your own home. This systematic approach would help pave the way for us to become the best furniture store in the Kootenay’s. The Ashley Home-

store was a winner right from the start, offering value and style at a great price all at one convenient location. By continuing to listening to our customers and their needs, in 2011 we opened our exclusive Simmons Beautyrest Gallery. Simmons was the logical choice to partner with as they share the same vision to provide their customers value with the widest range of quality mattresses that incorporated the latest in sleep technology. We are very pleased to offer our customers access to the products of the only Simmons Beautyrest Gallery between Calgary and Vancouver. 2013 has taken the Ashley Homestore another step forward and has just recently opened an exclusive Frigidaire Appliance Gallery. This has truly enabled us to become a one stop shopping location for absolutely everything, whether you are moving into a new apartment, updating with some home renovations or furnishing a newly built house. The Frigidaire line-up is vast with a wide selection of the Gallery and Professional Line-up along with the advanced Electrolux brand of appliances. In store we have everything for your home including refrigerators, electric and gas ranges, cook tops, high efficiency washer and dryer sets, microwaves, freezers, specialty wine and mini fridges. We are excited to offer the latest technology together with functionality and style at very competitive prices. The Ashley Homestore has grown with our customer’s and we will continue to listen to their needs and expectations. What’s our next step? Feel free to visit the store and be part of our future successes.

When the Denham’s bought Cranbrook’s Ford store over 5 years ago, it was always a long term vision to build a new dealership to better service its growing customer base. Today, that vision is almost a reality. With the external walls of the dealership already standing, completion is now expected for late summer/ early fall of 2013. This 4-acre property will feature a 25,000 sq. ft state of the art facility, comprised of 2 floors, 14 service bays (including a Quick Lube Bay), 4 wash bays, a 4000 sq. ft parts department, and a Computer rendering of finished dealership 4-car showroom. The facility will include a large, comfortable customer lounge area, offering free coffee and wi-fi. A full service boardroom will be available to local clubs wishing to host meetings, in the facility. And, in keeping with work life balance and taking care of its growing staff, there will be full a lunchroom, and a gym for those wanting to keep fit. Using state of the art technology in all facets of the dealership, some of the highlights will include the modern “Road Force” Balancer. It will also have a customer info centre including touch screen technology, where shoppers will be able to look at accessories, build and price their new Ford, or simply browse the inventory, right there in the showroom. Denham Ford is proud to have supported local industry in the building of this dealership, and has used local trades wherever possible. Denham Ford recently earned the prestigious President’s Award from Ford Motor Co. for the second year running. This award is Ford of Canada’s highest dealership honour, and is presented annually to those dealerships who demonstrate outstanding achievement in sales and customer satisfaction. Also recently awarded was the Black Press Readers’ Choice Award, from which they took away the Gold for new vehicle sales, and Silver for used vehicle sales. This was based solely on the votes of East Kootenay newspaper readers. Denham Ford does not take these successes lightly, and they continue to strive towards excellence on a daily basis. “The decision to invest in this new facility in the community which has supported us over the last 5 years was an easy one. We look forward to continuing to improve the customer experience, and growing even more in the years to come”, says Braydon Denham, General Manager of Denham Ford. Stay tuned for the grand opening of the new Denham Ford BC…. autumn 2013!

Experienced and proud to offer a diverse range of services
The home of Culligan, Beachcomber Hot Tub and Flaman Fitness
managed to not only purchase the business but the building as well a short year later. Even though this all sounds grand it was during some very trying times with the local economy. In order to keep sales going and keep our staff employed we decided to reduce our profit margins to be competive with the Alberta
owner in sales for a period of one year to see if we could work together. My goal was to see if I could buy in with the hopes of owning my own company some day. After the first year things went really well and I purchased a small percentage of the business and within three years with the local Credit Union’s help I
Hi I’m Murray Floyd and I was asked to write a business profile of my company. I feel very fortunate to say that my wife Sherri and I own and operate the local Culligan, Beachcomber Hot Tub and Flaman Fitness stores in Cranbrook. It all started back in 2002 when I started to work for the previous

market. This proved to be a good decision as we managed to win Beachcomber’s store of the year two years in a row for 50,000 population and less for total sales. Beachcomber Cranbrook has been serving it’s customers for 29 years. Culligan is such a great franchise to own as they are respected throughout the world as leaders in water treatment industry and they have the highest standards for bottled water production. We have been proudly serving the East Kootenays for 38 years. Culligan Cranbrook’s mission has been to deliver high-quality water treatment products that will benefit every part of our customers’ lives. We hope to raise the qual-
ity of life by purifying its most essential element: water. In 2009 I recognized a need for a fitness store in Cranbrook and with my having a diploma in fitness and nutrition it seemed to be a good decision. So I started the process of finding a good fit for my other two product lines that would have the same quality and warranties that our customers appreciate. Flaman is a 50-year-old company that really understands value and customer service. It now has been almost three years and I know I made a good decision as we have very competitive products, great warranties and a fantastic selection of fitness equipment and supplies. All this is simply not attainable without a great staff; they re-
ally are the backbone of any great business. We currently have 15 long term employees that range from 10- 20 years. My goal and vision is to train and keep as many staff as possible as opposed to hiring part time staff to avoid paying a higher salary. I pay for the medical/ dental/ life insurance for the staff to help reduce their monthly costs. This really is a family business and we all help out to get the many jobs done. One minute you could be delivering a bottle of water, then a hot tub then you will most likely be delivering a treadmill in the afternoon all with a smile on your face. We need to take care of our customers as you’re not going to survive in a small town if you don’t take care of your customers. We just
try and be honest with them and treat them as if they’re walking through the front door of your house. Another great part of owning a business is being able to help support our community. It really is a pleasure to be able to support local sport teams like hockey, baseball football, figure skating and riding clubs. If it has anything to do with helping kids, I’m in. I commit to helping kids in any way possible as they are the future of our great town. I am very fortunate to own a company that offers such great longterm value throughout our diverse product lines while having the experienced staff to serve our customers. Sincerely; Murray Floyd.

Dave and Corey welcome you to Spring Honda.
The new 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe have received the highest available safety rating of top safety pick+ from the U.S. Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This recognition makes the Civic Sedan and Coupe the first and only IIHS small cars in the industry to earn a top safety pick+. Honda leads all other brands in achieving top safety pick+ ratings with four models – Civic Sedan and Coupe, and Accord Sedan and Coupe. Further, for the 2013 model year, all Honda and Acura models tested1 by the IIHS have received a top safety pick or top
safety pick+ rating. “If you are looking for a compact car with a top safety pick+ rating, the 2013 Honda Civic is the only choice,” said Dave Jamieson, assistant vice president of sales and marketing at Honda Canada Inc. “We believe this is a distinct competitive advantage, especially as more and more consumers place a premium on crash rating performance.” Honda Safety Leadership Honda has a long history of leadership in the development and application of advanced technologies and designs to enhance the safety of all road users, includ-

ing automobile occupants, motorcycle riders, and pedestrians. The company operates two of the world’s most sophisticated crash test facilities and is responsible for numerous pioneering efforts in the areas of crashworthiness, airbag technology, collision compatibility and pedestrian safety. This commitment to safety is rooted in Honda’s goal to be a company that society wants to exist, and it complements the company’s leadership in reducing vehicle emissions, improving fuel efficiency and advancing alternatives to gasoline.

Cranbrook Dodge delivers value with service and quality vehicles Chrysler Canada today announced its 38th consecutive month of year-overyear sales growth, representing the longest sales streak in the Company’s history. ”Starting the new year as the bestselling manufacturer in the country validates the strong investments we have made into our product portfolio,” said Dave Buckingham, Chief Operating Of-
ficer, Chrysler Canada. ”We finished 2012 by shattering annual sales records for Ram trucks, Jeep Wrangler, and Chrysler 200 and we are glad to see that momentum continue into 2013.” The Windsor-built Chrysler Town & Country recorded a sales growth that tripled the results from January 2012. This represents a January sales record for the Chrysler Town
& Country. Now in their 29th year, Chrysler minivans (Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country) still command an impressive 70 per cent of the minivan segment in Canada. Jeep Wrangler, ranked “4x4 of the Decade” by Four Wheeler Magazine, saw its sales grow 44 per cent in January 2013. These results represent a monthly sales record for Jeep
Wrangler. Dodge Journey remains Canada’s best-selling and most affordable mid-size crossover. January sales marked a record month for Dodge Journey. Recently voted the North American Truck/Utility of the Year, as well as Motor Trend Truck of the Year, Ram truck sales were up 24 per cent for the month of January 2013, representing a January
sales record. Combine these accolades with the tremendous value represented with competitige pricing and better than ever rebates and incentives; you can own a new Ram at historically low prices. Is that progress? At Cranbrook Dodge, we think so.
So we all know how important shop local is to our local economy. When you shop with local merchants, more of your money stays close to home; supporting local events, and fund-
raising efforts and all the things that make our community of Cranbrook, a great place to live. You wouldn’t host a fundraising event….go down the street and ask your neighbor-
hood shop for a cash donation….and then shop out of town for prizes…would you? No – you wouldn’t. Now, we all know that there are occasionally price advantages to online and
out of town shopping …but remember who it is that will support your little league or minor hockey team? You know it!...LOCALS! Something wonderful to share with you is how Social Media is promoting Shop Local. Now when you are on your Facebook page you can simply type into the search bar what you are looking for…you can see how available the products are, speak to someone in your area to
get any questions answered, and even have the product delivered. You will also be able to note how many of your friends…. or friends of friends have had an experience with a local Company…and more important, what the experience was. Isn’t it nice to have a trusted source to go to! Finding what is of interest to local customers and creating content that entices them is the first stage in the process of being more visible.

Social media–an online twist on shopping locally in Cranbrook It’s no mystery that every year more people carry out more of their social and consumer activities online. So being a source of information for the products you carry is just as important. You may not buy a larger ticket priced item online…but most people shopping will source more than one site if the best information isn’t there. So it stands to reason that there is a visible value in including social net-
work links with your online presence, and other advertising. How will you make this will work to your advantage? Heather Fancy, Marketing and Social Media Director for Northstar GM “Tradition you can Trust.”

Cranbrook Kia is looking forward to expand its stellar 2012 sales through 2013.
2012 marks Kia Canada’s best year ever in 13 year history while continuing an industry-leading 48 consecutive months of sales growth In addition, the month of December elevated the brand to an industry-leading 48 months of consecutive sales growth, reporting a total of 3,960 vehicles and a
15.8 per cent increase from a year previously. “2012 was a successful year for Kia Canada Inc., as the company relentlessly achieved a 19.5 per cent increase yearover-year within the Canadian market,” said Maria Soklis, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Kia
Canada Inc. “Our world-class designed product portfolio will continue to propel growth into 2013 with several all-new and redesigned vehicle launches extending throughout the year.” Some of the reasons for this unprecedented growth include significant awards achieved by such
models as the Rio sub-compact, MotoringTV’s 2012 best new “Small Car Under $21,000”, including both the sedan and 5-Door versions. The award-winning Optima mid-size sedan, named as MotoringTV’s 2012 “Car of the Year” and “Best New Family Car”, AJAC 2012 “Best Family Car (Under $30,000) and “Best Family Car (Over $30,000)”, to name but a few. Cranbrook Kia is looking forward to a bright future to go along with their bright new state of the art facility. This investment in their business and our community demonstrates their commitment to Kia’s slogan, “The power to surprise,” by providing experiences that go beyond expecations.

We’re glad you’ve taken notice of us! You’ve got good reason to – we are a brand to watch out for. Even the toughest industry critics have been heaping praise on our terrific line-up of vehicles. Our awards include product accolades for everything from quality to “greenness”, and from safety to styling. Awards are important; to you as a consumer, because they prove you’re investing in a product respected by industry experts, and to us as an automotive company, because they demonstrate that critics and analysts are recognizing the quality of our products. But we know that as a Canadian consumer, you are equally interested in the environment – if not even more so. I’m therefore happy to report that at Hyundai, this is a top priority and that our R&D efforts in this area are paying off. We are working every day to ensure that the features and characteristics that are important to you in a vehicle – fuel efficiency, low emissions and safety – are built into every single vehicle that we produce. We will continue those efforts and hope to bring you products that meet or exceed your expectations. At Hillcrest Hyundai, we invite you to stop by and see, smell, feel and drive for yourself. We’ll show you the huge number of awards we’re proud to have received. If it’s been a while since you’ve looked over the Hyundai lineup, You’re in for a pleasant surprise.

It’s going to be a busy spring this year in EKC country! On April 17 East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC) will celebrate 63 years in the East Kootenay. All members are invited to join our Board at the Annual General Meeting on April 17th starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Heritage Inn. Light refreshments will follow the meeting. Everyone is welcome. Also on April 17 we invite you to release your inner dragon, or
shark, and join us at the Cranbrook Young Entrepreneur Show. Students at three Cranbrook schools have been learning what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Did you know that entrepreneurship and small business is the career choice of 44% of Canadians? Each student entrepreneur created a product and developed a business plan to sell that product. Student entrepreneurs from each
school will present their products for sale at the Final Showcase to be held at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook Wednesday April 17 from 1:00 to 2:30pm. Please join us. You may discover the next Apple or Google, or perhaps a talented student to hire in the future. Ten percent of their proceeds from product sales will be donated to charity. EKC would like to thank the teachers, principals and district
office for their support. You are also invited to share a little love with Sparwood on March 27, 2013, the first anniversary of EKC’s Sparwood branch. The party starts at 5:30pm and runs until 8:30pm at the branch at 124 Aspen Drive. Come and enjoy a barbeque and refreshments. Bring the kids for PT the Clown and entertainment with DJ McRae. Show Spar-
wood a little love and enter your drawing of ‘Why I love Sparwood’ and enter to win a patio set and BBQ worth $1,000. Recently EKC’s CEO Jody Burk unveiled proposed plans for the area surrounding the Sparwood branch, including a play park, new access, potential retail space and condos over the museum of the Michel-Natal Heritage Society. Plans for developing

the Sparwood area are currently in the planning stage and EKC is reviewing public feedback from the open house. “We are committed to helping to create communities with healthy growth” said Mr. Burk. Eric Johnstone, Sparwood Branch Manager supports Burk’s vision “We want to add to a community where people will want to walk around, linger and meet others. “Sparwood’s
strong economy and proud mining history together with the incredible sense of community and caring shown by the involvement and excitement makes this a place we feel a real belonging too, and are proud to be part of.” Stop by any EKC Branch in Cranbrook, Elkford, Fernie or Sparwood, EKCCU. Construction questions? Get straight answers thanks to Dueck Enterprises’ newly launched construction consulting service. Menno Dueck Where can you take your construction and building questions to and be confident that you will receive accurate and unbiased information delivered in a professional manner? Book an appointment with Ask Menno, the new consulting service launched by long-established Cranbrook construction company Dueck Enterprises Inc. Menno Dueck, company owner and president, shares, “I’m just a regular guy who just happens to have over 40 years of hands-on entrepreneurial experience in residential and commercial construction, renovation and project management” and “I want to help others by sharing that knowledge.” It was Christie Dueck, Menno’s wife and business partner, who came up with the name “Ask Menno” because “that’s what I was hearing out in the community—when someone was bouncing around ideas and thoughts on their projects and had questions, someone else would say, ‘I don’t know, why don’t you ask Menno, he’ll know.’” The goal of Ask Menno is to provide all clients with a strong foundation of knowledge regarding any building, construction or renovation

task and to deliver that service in an unbiased and professional way on an hourly charge basis. There is no obligation to hire any particular contractor or company; Ask Menno is simply there to answer all your questions so that you can make an informed decision about the next stage of your project. Menno’s extensive network can connect you with other sources that can oversee and finish projects as necessary. “The Ask Menno service is not meant for me to gain extra work or take on new projects,” Menno said. “I want to provide the public with a place to obtain accurate information and the tools necessary to help them fully understand all factors and options involved in their particular
situation.” In Menno’s view, the more you know about your project and potential pitfalls, the more in control you are of your time, money and frustration level. “No one wants their project to be another construction horror story,” he added. Menno envisions working with a wide spectrum of people from homeowner DIYers (do-it-yourselfers) to business owners seeking renovation ideas. “Over 80 per cent of my career has been spent in renovations—totally different than new construction. You never really know what you’re up against until you jump in,” Menno said. “You need to be able to think outside the box and come up with creative ways to deal with the inevitable challenges
and tricky situations that surface along the way. It really is because of my years working hands-on that I can do that.” Home and commercial buyers and sellers are also a perfect fit for Ask Menno. For example, “buyers can find out if the alterations they want to do on a potential purchase are viable or is there an alternative; sellers can gather the information they need on projects that might enhance their sale,” Menno noted. He is looking forward to serving the seniors and singles community as well “because I know of too many stories where they have been taken advantage of.”
Here’s what Menno’s clients have had to say about Dueck Enterprises Inc.: ■“When we decided to do a major renovation to our building on the Strip, Menno was the first person we thought of. His vision and creativity was invaluable in creating a unique and inviting look for our Ashley Furniture Home- Store.” ~Joey and Christine Hoeschmann, owners
■ “Our Calgary office manages commercial properties in B.C. and Alberta. Trust and confidence in Menno’s abilities, constant updates and clear documentation allows us to resume our busy travel schedule knowing our project was in good hands.” ~Hal Hodgson and Linda Boucher, Pinnacle Properties
■ “We hired Menno and his crew to restore the CPR Superintendent’s house built in 1900. Matching old and new construction required great skill and work ethic, which we received from Dueck Enterprises over the course of this vast project. Many thanks.” ~Rose and Don Saby, Cranbrook Premier Residence B&B

The following is an account of one parent’s experience with the Young Entrepreneur show and how it has influenced her daughter. I first saw this program running in some of the lower mainland schools a couple years ago. It was so great to see how engaged and excited the kids were about their projects. This program makes learning fun! I can’t speak for all the kids but my daughter loved selling her product the most and by the end of the show she had sold everything and had earned $35. Lauryn is already thinking of ways to improve her products and better ways to market them in hopes of selling more in April. Now she wants to find a basket and
go “mobile” …lol, just like her Mom! Lauryn realizes the more she makes, the more she can donate to her charity…The SPCA. The program encourages each child to donate 10% of their profits but Lauryn has decided to donate 20%. It’s our children and our children’s children that are going to make a difference in this world. And the young entrepreneur program helps to teach kids valuable lessons which will carry them through life. With the help of sponsored programs like this, our children can really make a difference in our community and have fun learning to do it!

Professional service and a wealth of experience for you
The latest trends will allow you to choose from some interesting innovations, but of course you will need to take into account the demands of each room before settling on a choice. If your main criterion is comfort, for a bedroom or living room for example, carpet is a traditional choice. For rooms with higher humidity levels, such as a bathroom or kitchen, ceramic is an especially suitable type of flooring to consider. You could also opt for vinyl or the new types of laminate, which are water-resistant. Flooring in the dining room must be stain resistant. Choose wood, laminate, vinyl, or a dark-coloured carpet. For high traffic areas, such as the entrance hall or the family room, opt for a durable and comfortable floorcovering such as carpeting, hardwood, engineered hardwood, or laminate. For the basement, it is very important that the subfloor be well insulated. Suitable flooring could include carpet, engineered hardwood, laminate, or vinyl. Cork flooring is a great choice for a home cinema room or playroom because of its excellent soundproofing qualities.

Cranbrook Chamber news The first quarter of 2013 has been a very busy and productive one for the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce. Our board has had a lot of work to do in a short period of time, and all board members are working actively on achieving our priorities that were set out in our January strategy session. Our main strategy this year is to advocate strategically for our membership. Our sign bylaw committee, led by Jason Wheeldon involved a large number of local chamber members, with an interest in, or expertise on the sign issue. The committee not only reviewed the draft Cranbrook bylaw, but also reviewed many other sign bylaws from regional service centres across BC. The committee developed a rational and well-researched response to the draft prepared by city staff. Because of the significant implications for business, economic growth and the city’s visual appeal, this is probably one of the most thoroughly analyzed issues in the history of the Chamber. The city is currently reviewing all feedback received on the bylaw and plan to prepare a new draft bylaw for city council in the near future. During 2012 members of the Chamber board prepared a survey to be presented to the City of Cranbrook mayor and council on barriers to business in Cranbrook. Our committee led by Dave Butler presented the results along with our recommendations on changes the city could implement to make it easier for people to do business in Cranbrook. We continue to meet with city staff, every couple of weeks, to receive updates on feedback on the progress of these changes. Our committee will continue these meetings and encourage changes to city processes to help businesses in Cranbrook and ensure that
the recommendations from our members in that survey are followed through on. Our retail committee continues to work at strengthen the retail sector in Cranbrook. Our Black Friday event has grown stronger and more popular than we could have imagined, and 2013 will see a full committee led by Joey Hoechsmann dedicated strictly to this important event in Cranbrook. The committee has had numerous meetings already and plans are well underway to make this year’s event even bigger than in the past. Connor Stewart and the rest of our retail committee are continuing to educate the public on the benefits to all sectors in Cranbrook from shopping locally and the “10% shift.” Through policies developed at the BC Chamber level, the Cranbrook Chamber hopes to pressure the government on ways to fight crossborder shopping to the USA. Through countless hours of our volunteer board member Chris Botterill and his communications committee, the Chamber plans to utilize social media and the internet to dramatically enhance our two-way communication with membership. We plan to have a new business directory system within the Chamber website, integrate a new chamber e-newsletter template, acquire feature writers for the Cranbrook Tourism blog and continue to grow the Cranbrook Tourism website. These are big priorities for the chamber board and staff, but with the dedicated group we have, I believe they are very attainable. As a volunteer board of directors, I know that each of us feels passionately about the work we are doing and that representing our members. We will continue to do all these while also focussing on our “regular” chamber activities like: hosting monthly
chamber luncheons, organizing and awarding the Evening of Excellence Business Awards, running our annual turkey drive to support the Cranbrook Food Bank and the Salvation Army, presenting the annual citizen of the year award, and hosting our annual Awesome Auction. We will do all we can to help achieve the Chamber’s mission of “Fostering a healthy business climate in Cranbrook & district.”

Best-in-class honours awarded to 2013 Impreza, Outback and BRZ Subaru Canada, Inc. recently announced that it has received three Canadian Residual Value Awards from automotive insights company ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values. Subaru was awarded Residual Value Awards in ALG’s Compact Car, Midsize Utility and Sports Car categories for its 2013 Impreza, Outback and BRZ, respectively. ALG’s Residual Value Awards honour the vehicles that are forecast to retain the highest percentage of MSRP after a three-year period for luxury brands and a four-year period for mainstream brands. Award recipients were chosen after a careful evaluation of vehicle criteria, including segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. This year’s awards are based on 2013 model year vehicles. Awards are given in 22 vehicle categories and two brand categories (Mainstream and Premium). “Our approach is designed to give the Subaru driver an unsurpassed level of confidence behind the wheel,” said Shiro Ohta, president and CEO of Subaru Canada. “This dedication has helped us consistently rank as one of the industry’s top manufacturers. Having the highest predicted resale value in three segments will help more and more Canadians put Subaru on their shopping lists.”

Arrow Motors Volkswagen–more than just Farfegnugen Arrow Motors Volkswagen has been a proud member of our business community going on 36 years now. We’ve undergone many changes and expansions over the years keeping pace with the ongoing improvements of Volkswagen’s quality line of Automobiles. It’s no wonder that we continually show growth in the Canadian Marketplace.
The string of record sales results continued in February for Volkswagen Canada. A total of 3,911 new cars and light trucks delivered the fourteenth consecutive month of best-ever sales for the company and were 11% higher than during February of last year (3,539). Year-to-date sales of 7,284 have solidly increased Volkswagen’s market share in Canada.
“Our goal is to make Volkswagen the most aspirational volume brand in Canada,” stated John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada. “We hope to accomplish this with our strong lineup of vehicles and very competitive pricing.” The Jetta remains the top-selling car in the Volkswagen lineup, with 2,218 sold last month. The 2013 Passat starts at less than $25,400, nearly $10,000 less than the previous version that bowed out in 2011. Interior styling, inspired by Volkswagen’s Touareg sport ute, is clean, uncluttered and devoid of the trendy dashboard swoops and swirls found in competing vehicles. Creating the engine lineup required VW to drop the previous Passat’s standard 200-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant and replace it with a less-expensive non-turbo 170-horsepower 2.5-litre fivecylinder.

Jetta has become Vee-Dubs hot seller. Dropping the price to make it competitive with other compact sedans helped, but a spacious interior and great handling was and still is a strong selling point. The price-leader Jetta functions with a 115-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that gets reasonable fuel economy. The 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder gas engine also returns as an option, but for serious fuel thriftiness opt for the 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (called the TDI) rated at 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.6 l/100 km on the highway.
