Student debt a serious concern: NDP Grant Granger

margaret snowball is comforted by her husband Graham hudson at a public memorial at the Queen’s park bandshell for their daughter Gemma, who was killed by a car at sixth street and sixth avenue as she walked from her job at the safeway deli counter. they’re supported by, from right to left, Gemma’s sister hannah, her aunt anne milburn, and her ‘canadian mum’ sharlene debruyn. more than 100 people attended the memorial for Gemma, who had settled in new westminster after moving from perth, australia 18 months ago.

Margaret Snowball is returning to Perth, Australia with the ashes of her effervescent 25-year-old daughter Gemma. But she’s going home without any answers on how the young woman, who had settled in New Westminster, was killed. Margaret knows Gemma died after a vehicle struck her while crossing the intersection of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue last Monday. What she doesn’t know is
Brand new state of the art facility
how such a tragedy happened. Gemma’s coworkers at the Safeway at Royal City Centre say they heard that a Jeep driven by an elderly man made an illegal left turn about 10:30 p.m. before hitting Gemma. New Westminster police, however, won’t confirm any details about the collision because the information might have impact on potential witnesses or court proceedings. “I really want to know how she died. They’re not saying anything,” said Margaret as she received
condolences during a reception Tuesday at the Royal City Curling Club following a memorial earlier in the day in Queen’s Park. At last Friday’s candlelight vigil for Gemma at Sixth and Sixth, Margaret couldn’t see any skid marks so she can’t figure out how a vehicle could build up enough speed to knock someone down and cause a fatal injury without skid marks. At least the driver stayed at the scene, she said. “I can’t say how I feel about that person because I don’t know how it
is my daughter died,” said Margaret. “They’re going to have to live with the death of my daughter for the rest of their lives, and I don’t mean that in a bitter way. I would not want to be that person.” New Westminster Staff Sgt. Paul Hyland said the busy intersection, which doesn’t allow left turns except for buses, has not been problematic in the past. “The traffic section advised it was not on their radar,” Hyland said in an email to the NewsLeader. please see YOuNG WOMaN, a3

Provincial NDP advanced education critic Michelle Mungall went into a session with Douglas College students feeling some of the same angst they do. Mungall visited the New Westminster campus with local New Democrat candidate Judy Darcy on Tuesday. Mungall, 35, is in her first term as MLA for Nelson-Creston and not far removed from academia and the burden of student loans. Mungall said the top issue for students is affordability with the average debt for a post-secondary graduate being $27,000. “B.C. is one of the highest in the country, and the interest rate is higher than anywhere else,” said Mungall in an interview prior to her appearance. B.C., she said, is the only province without a financial needs grant program—which means young people, as they become adults, are having to wait much longer for their lives to evolve. “They’re not having kids, houses, cars, investment because of their massive debt load,” said Mungall. please see DEBT, a4

SLEEP APNEA?
Loose muscles
in the throat cause snoring, also interrupted breathing and gasping for air (sleep apnea), which brings on being tired all day, need for napping, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, irregular heart beat. Read below how Bell helps thousands, usually first night, inexpensively, with no side effects. Greatly improves quality of life and saves marriages. Survey says 48% snore and 75% are suffering if you include the silent suffering partners. To my surprise, after taking BellSound Sleep #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since #23 taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. < Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN.

ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
PST redux
LAST WEEK: Do you think shopping across the border is better value?
With the return to a combination of a seven-per-cent provincial sales tax and five-percent federal goods and services tax April 1, the harmonized sales tax experiment will come to an end in B.C. Taxpayers shouldn’t count on having more money left over at the end of the month, however, as the changes made by the province in the wake of the initial HST – tax credits for lower-income families and seniors among them – will also come to an end. There will nonetheless be good news for consumers in certain sectors. Cyclists will regain their PST exemption on purchases of new bikes, safety equipment and repairs. The bill for restaurant meals will go down by seven per cent as they’re not subject to the provincial tax. The same with children’s clothing, books, newspapers and magazines and a myriad other goods and services. If that materializes, and there’s no guarantee it will, it could create jobs and benefit other related businesses. The HST was supposed to provide a less complicated tax regime for the sale of goods and services and eliminate exemptions and hidden taxes created under the PST/GST system. There were still loopholes. For example, a person buying a donut at Tim Horton’s would pay tax on their purchase, while the same donut at a grocery store would not be taxed, since it was considered a grocery item. We hope the work the province has done on reforming the PST, since the public voted the HST out with a 55-per-cent majority, makes B.C.’s tax system more streamlined. At the very least, we fully expect businesses that complained loudest about the HST to put their money where their mouth is and prove to customers they are saving money under PST/GST. —Black Press

Successful mall a moving Target? Ask my four-year-old son the best thing about Royal City Centre, and he won’t hesitate: that little ice cream truck next to Dollarama. As he dishes out imaginary cones to passersby, I watch from a bench and sometimes turn to the person beside me and ask what they think of the mall. “Depressing.” “Kind of sad.” That sums up my unscientific research, but I’d guess most people in New West are disappointed in the place. Oh, there are a few decent shops and all that. But the energy—or lack thereof—is undeniable. Wouldn’t it be great to have a vibrant, busy mall in the heart of Uptown? For long-time residents the feeling might be even stronger. It’s possible that some still say “I’m going up to Woodward’s” out of habit when they go to Royal City Centre—a reference to one of the region’s most popular department stores at

a time when department stores were king. Today, the rumour mill is grinding overtime with suggestions that the venerable U.S. discount retailer Target is coming to the vacant space once occupied by Zellers. Funny how some things don’t change. Back in the early ’50s, local historian Archie Miller tells me, all the talk was about a mystery retailer coming to town. At the time, there was an Eatons on Columbia Street, and of course the Army & Navy. But a new department store? Would it be Hudson’s Bay? Woodward’s? Downtown? Uptown? When the news came out and Woodward’s set up shop Uptown

at Sixth and Sixth, everything followed. Shops, the city’s first towers in the area—it was the place to be. The special “$1.49 day” sale at Woodward’s, often held a few weeks before Christmas and during back-to-school season, was something to behold, Archie told me. “It was a madhouse. It was just chaos. Everybody went there to do their shopping.” It was a different era, of course. Before the big-box retailers. And it was only at the end of the Woodward’s era that Metrotown came along. The end of Woodward’s in 1993 led to Zellers in New West, which kind of ducttaped the mall together. But the mall’s fortunes dovetailed with Zeddy and Zellers shut in 2006, and the top level of the mall switched to office space and Labels and Dollarama eventually took over the main floor while Dynamic Health took over the atrium. At the time, Bart Slotman

of Uptown Property Group, which (among other things) runs the mall with London Drugs and Save On Foods on Sixth Street, said Zellers was a “junior department store” unable to generate sufficient traffic flow to anchor a mall of this size. In the long run, he said, Zellers’ closure could be good news. One thing’s for sure: as much as people bemoan the sad state of Royal City Centre, everyone’s rooting for it. When the mall owners came to city hall recently with plans to renovate the old Zellers space for a mystery tenant, hopes again ran high. Will it be Target? Canadian Tire is also rolling out smallerformat stores in response to Target’s arrival, which could also be a possibility. Who knows. There’s a lot counting on this. As long as the ice cream truck stays, I know my family will still be stopping by. Chris Bryan is editor of the NewsLeader.

City needs mixed housing Thirty-nine storeys of oneperson living! Above-ground parking! More fast food outlets! Cheap shopping! Located next to New Westminster SkyTrain station, Plaza 88 has proposed to build its next tower as 39 storeys of “small box” rental living. Was affordability mentioned? What happened to providing for families looking for livable housing—need we ask? Is this going to be just another tall tower of expensive temporary living for revolving-door tenants? There are three other towers already in place nearby that have plenty of available rental space. Some of the condos in these towers have not yet been lived in. The above-ground parking for the other three towers already built is certainly not filled. New parking underground is much less intrusive in a city where stark concrete is becoming dominant. Does anyone think this proposed development meets the needs of the population in New Westminster? It seems
to meet the needs of only one group of people who can pay expensive rent for a small living space. We need a mix of neighbourhood homes, whether single-family houses, duplexes, townhomes or condos, with a mix of young families, single people, and empty nesters. These residents need easy access to transportation, shopping, medical needs and social events. We need buildings where all residents, not just one segment of society, can enjoy the positive aspects of living in New West. What kind of shopping area can we expect with this proposed tower? More fast food outlets, another dollar store? We have enough cheap shopping. Let’s try for some Downtown shops that appeal to a variety of shoppers. Plaza 88 is seeking changes to city bylaws, to meet their needs. Let’s see developers and builders meet the social needs and future vision of the city they are building in. H. McCulloch New Westminster
COAL COMPOUNDS EXISTING PROBLEM Please include me in the strong protest against creating a coal terminal at the Fraser Surrey Docks. Although the coal terminal would bring jobs and money to the area, locating such a facility within a populous community is a bad idea from environmental, social and health perspectives. New Westminster’s air quality is compromised enough as is, with emissions from trains, truck and car traffic, the Annacis Island sewage treatment plant, the cement plant, and the waste burning plant at Big Bend. Coal dust and its toxins won’t affect just a 500-meter radius from the terminal; with our winds and rivers, the impact will be felt over a much, much greater area. L. Campbell New Westminster

Explosion hits Brow house A man is in hospital in serious but stable condition following an explosion in a home in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood of New Westminster on Monday. Paul Hyland. Since they weren’t sure what the cause was, some nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution in case it was a gas leak or GRANT GRANGER/NEWSLEADER something similar. RTScorner Oklahoma! takes to the Massey stage next month
E
very year in March and April, I look forward to the energy that takes hold in the Massey Theatre as rehearsals begin for the annual Royal City Musical Theatre production.
This year the local troupe is producing the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! to celebrate the musical’s 70th anniversary. For the last few years, Massey Theatre has been contracted to build the sets for Royal City Musical Theatre
Angela Steidel which usually begins in March. It’s fascinating to walk past the scene shop and see the set being built in various stages; from unloading all the lumber to seeing a wall being built to a finished house, barn or windmill. Each Sunday the actors rehearse in one of our adjacent school rooms. The lobby of the theatre is always filled with
beautiful melodies and harmonies and I can’t wait to see the whole picture on stage this April. After Royal City Musical Theatre moved its offices to the Massey Theatre two years ago, our offices have been abuzz with volunteers coming in to work on the program, pick up posters for distribution, answering phones for ticket requests and all the chatter about Oklahoma! As information becomes available, stage crews, front-of-

One of Massey’s very own front-ofhouse ushers, Sayer Roberts, will be starring this year as Curly in Oklahoma! You may remember seeing him last year in Hello Dolly, playing Barnaby. The New West native will join the 45-member cast for this production’s twoweek run. The musical will be directed and choreographed by award-winning Valerie Easton with James Bryson as musical director. The design team includes Chris Sinosich (costumes), Gerald King (lighting) and Omanie Elias (sets). Oklahoma! is the love story of Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, after the turn of the century. The musical is set in the old west with high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys. The show is filled with memorable musical numbers including “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” “Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and or course, “Oklahoma!”—all performed with the 20-piece orchestra. • Oklahoma! is at the Massey April 11 to 27. Preview nights are April 11 and 12 at 8 p.m., with the rest of the shows April 13, 17 - 20 and April 24-27 at 8 p.m. Matinees are April 14, 20, 21, 27 at 2 p.m. For tickets go to www. masseytheatre.com or call 604-521-5050. Noble going south Vancouver Cannons’ right-handed pitcher Connor Noble will take to the mound for the Canadian Junior National team in Orlando, Florida in April. Noble, who had nine wins, five losses and a 1.47 ERA in 15 games last year, is the fourth Cannon to earn a spot with the junior national team. Pitchers Tommy Robson and Vaughn Covington and catcher Rowan Wick all wore the red-andwhite in 2009. They’ve all since embarked on pro careers.

In the end, she raised $1.2 million. That kind of out-of-the-box thinking was part of what the roundtable discussed when they met. “They all agreed there is a problem, that the current model isn’t sustainable, that the industry is going down in a spiral,” said Hwang, who plans to hold follow-up roundtables in April and May. “It’s a beginning of conversations.” One of Sunday’s comments came from local musician Shawn Soucy, who runs a videography business as his main source of income. “A lot of musicians are leaving the industry because they can’t make a living,” Hwang recalled Soucy saying. “Everyone in the music industry is restructuring.” Hwang said The Columbia, which is operated by Lafflines Comedy
Club owner Barry Buckland, is doing OK financially considering it’s the new kid on the block. But the building has to work every day in order for it to survive. “We have to have a sustainable program. So the Columbia has to find ways to sustain a program so it can continue to stay open for another 80 years,” said Hwang. He’s worried about live music’s survival in the region because it gets shown the door every time there’s a Vancouver Canucks game, or theatres like Vancouver’s Ridge and Rio close down. “We are somewhat of an innovator at The Columbia and we’re finding a solution on how to adapt,” said Hwang. “We have to adapt fairly soon. We’re not a publicly supported venue, like most theatres are.”
Hyack seeking volunteers
Can politics be different?
The Hyack Festival Association is looking for volunteers and performers for upcoming events. The organization is seeking help for the Hyack International Parade on Saturday, May 25, and the Uptown Live event that follows the parade. Langley living
Coming home to Polygon’s Red Maple Park By Kerry Vital
Langley is widely considered to be the “countryside” of the Lower Mainland, with a number of equestrian and agricultural areas. Polygon’s Red Maple Park makes living the idyllic country lifestyle easy. “The location is ideal,” says sales manager Judy Rohatyn. “The neighbourhood is nice and quiet. We’ve had so many young families and couples moving in.” Red Maple Park’s convenient location means that there are plenty of shopping and dining opportunities nearby. Willowbrook Mall and the Langley Events Centre are also close, and a new elementary school within walking distance of Red Maple Park will open in the fall. For commuters, this location offers quick access to Highway 1 and the Langley bypass. Red Maple Park offers some of the best value in Langley in a convenient, yet exclusive, setting. The two- and three-bedroom townhomes are spacious and open, with several floorplans to choose from. Homes impress with charming Arts and Crafts architectural details and custom interior design elements. Every home has a large deck or patio, and a yard surrounded by picket fencing, with most homes featuring a tandem double-car garage. “This is an established community,” Rohatyn says, adding that the homes are move-in ready. Inside, natural light flows through large windows and the nine-foot ceilings on the main floor give the

And, most homes also include a bathtub with ceramic tile surround in the main bathroom.
