Twenty Abbotsford students are getting a sneak preview this week of what it’s like to be a police officer. Their training, as part of the Abbotsford Police Department’s week-long Junior Police Academy, included analyzing a mock crime scene. That exercise, held on Tuesday morning at W. J. Mouat Secondary, featured a murder “victim” – actually a mannequin – lying on the floor. She was surrounded by evidence, such as a handgun, strewn liquor bottles, footprints and shell casings. The students then had to answer a series of questions about the crime scene. It’s all designed to get them thinking about whether a career in policing is right for them. The participants were selected from among 40 Grade 11 and 12 applicants. The academy, which started Monday and runs until Friday, also covered basic law, police control tactics, a ride-along in a police car, and a day at the firearms range.

March 12, the trio were caught in a blizzard on the B.C. side of the traverse, and Taylor fell down a crevasse. His companions survived, built a snow cave to stay warm, set off an emergency beacon, and were rescued on Friday, March 15. But continuing harsh weather prevented rescue crews from reaching Taylor until this week. Omar McDadi, a spokesperson with Parks Canada, said the weather cleared on Tuesday, and two rescue crews made up of a total of seven people were able to get to the scene. Once they entered the crevasse, they came across a “snow bridge” about 15 metres MORINEE down. Taylor, a Langley resident, had been with the city of Abbotsford for 12 years, spearheading projects and events that included the city hosting the 2004 BC Summer Games and the 2006 BC Seniors Games. Earlier this year, Taylor was an integral part of the bid that landed Abbotsford the 2016 BC Summer Games. Major projects that also took place under Taylor’s leadership include the renovation of Centennial Pool; improvements to the city’s trails system, including the expansion of the Discovery Trail throughout the city; and the three Plan A projects. Details on his memorial service have not yet been finalized.

Rich said one of the problems with the current system is that police agencies in each community might have different strategies for dealing with particular issues – for example, gang violence or chronic offenders. But these problems, and the people involved in them, are not confined to one community, and Rich said having a common approach would be more effective in reducing these issues. “We will do better if we organize policing around the patterns that communities are actually living in,” he said. Opponents of regional policing say that under such a model, police will lose con-
nections to their communities. Rich said he believes questions about regionalization should address not only policing, but government services as a whole. Regional policing was one of 63 recommendations made by commissioner Wally Oppal in December at the conclusion of the Missing Women Inquiry. Oppal blamed a lack of cooperation between police forces as the reason serial killer Robert Pickton was able to kidnap and murder so many women. Any decision on regional policing will be made by government, not by police agencies.

Crossing arms installed to improve safety to 4 p.m. at a cost of about $500 per day. The railway crossing in 2011 was called one of the most dangerous in Canada by a railway safety manager with the B.C. Safety Authority. The city has previously discussed the possibility of improving the road. A proposed overpass was on the city’s list of priority projects for years, but funding has never become available. Jeffcoatt said the city recently met with the provincial government to further discuss the possibility of improving Vye Road and Highway 11. The cost of installing the crossing

Crossing arms have been installed at the railway crossing on Vye Road, addressing an ongoing concern about the safety issues at the site. The new arms have been in place since Jan. 24, said Katherine Jeffcoatt, director of communications for the city of Abbotsford. A flag crew had monitored the site since May of last year, after Transport Canada issued an order to the city to maintain a crew until public safety could be ensured. The crews were in place Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.

The students, from six Abbotsford schools, collected eight gold, seven silver and four bronze medals. All gold medalists are now eligible to participate in the provincial skills competition to be held April 17 at Tradex in Abbotsford. The Abbotsford board of education has voted in favour of keeping the current calendar for the 2013/14 school year, but trustees want to look at other options past that. The vote means school will begin the day after Labour Day (Sept. 3) and there will be a twoweek spring b r e a k next year, E MORINE r u n n i n g ONLws.com March 17 abbyne to 28. The board had considered one other option – starting school a week earlier, on Aug. 27, and adding an extra day to four existing long weekends. Most of the trustees agreed to side with the 77 per cent of respondents in an online survey who supported maintaining the status quo. Shirley Wilson was the only trustee to vote against keeping the current calendar. “This whole conversation is about what adults are hoping for and wanting … I still can’t support it because I think we can do better,” she said. Starting school a week earlier was considered as an option to better balance the two high school semesters. Currently, the first semester is shorter than the second, based on the Ministry of Education designating the last week of January as provincial exam week. Abbotsford school district superintendent Kevin Godden said the ministry has refused to move the exam dates, forcing districts to look at alternatives for a balanced calendar.

Inmate succumbs to illness An inmate from Pacific Institution in Abbotsford has died of natural causes following a lengthy illness in the prison hospital, according to Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). Frank Tamok, 73, of Keremeos was serving a six-year 11-month sentence for causing death by criminal negligence, causing bodily harm by criminal negligence, and failing to stop at a motor vehicle accident. He was involved in crash in Penticton that killed Bradley Lentz on the Canada Day long weekend in 2011.

Heritage judges needed
MSA Museum Society is hosting the 17th annual Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair on April 9 and 10 at Tradex in Abbotsford, and judges from the community are needed. More than 1,200 students from six Fraser Valley school districts participated in a school heritage fair, and the top students chosen will move on to represent their school at the regional event. A total of 160 students will showcase their historical/heritage projects, which reflect some aspect of Canadian history. Judges will evaluate students on their ability to share what they have learned through their research. “This regional heritage fair is part of a national initiative to encourage youth to celebrate Canada’s history and heritage. Every year I am amazed at the wide variety of topics, and the excitement and enthusiasm that students have as they share their research information at the heritage fair,” said Cindy Rowell, co-ordinator of the event. Five students will be chosen to represent their school and the Fraser Valley region at the provincial heritage fair. Judging takes place at Tradex on April 9. The morning session is from 8:45 – 11:15 a.m. The afternoon session is from 12:45 – 2:15 p.m. If you would like to register as a judge for this event, email Rowell at hfcoordinator@gmail.com.

Abbotsford’s Achilles heel has been special teams – both the power play and penalty kill units have cratered. Prior to the 16-game slide, the Heat’s penalty killers were extinguishing a leaguebest 89.9 per cent of opposition power plays. But they’ve been absolutely lit up of late, operating at just a 72.3 per cent success rate during the slump. The power play has been no better, going from 17.6 per cent prior to the tailspin to 9.3 per cent during it. “We just haven’t performed very well in some moments of truth,” Ward analyzed. “We’ve had people in the right spots

Cristina Rennie Her curiosity for animals was paralleled by her curiosity for people. With more than 25 years experience and education, Cristina Rennie decided to open the barn doors of Shamrock, a place where humans can come to be healed through the use of horses.
Shamrock Counselling Cristina Rennie, founder of Shamrock Counselling, has found a way to bring her love of horses and humans together.
“I work a lot with the effects of trauma, which comes from ruptures in connection,” explains Rennie. “As the synergy between horse and human become stronger, we use this to build new experiences that often times have not been given space to grow.”
“I was one of those typical stories where a young girl falls in love with horses at first sight,” says Rennie, who grew up on a farm in Matsqui prairie. “Both sides of my family were farmers, so animals and the ethics of farm work were always a part of my life.” Rennie considers her first pony a “harsh teacher,” but explains that although it bit her, kicked her and bucked her off, she never gave up on their relationship.
Rennie uses the horses to form a bond of trust, allowing people to release themselves from the stranglehold of trauma. “The horses are willing to engage with us without force, and they can provide a physical closeness that is powerful,” remarks Rennie. “They say things to people without talking.”
From competing all over the world for equine sports, to a Masters in counselling psychology, it all comes back to the lessons learned from a young girl’s first pony.
The goals of Shamrock Counselling are described by Rennie as “big but doable, as the first foundational goal is to continue to work collaboratively with great organizations.”

Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (ASIA) teacher Traci Majewski was an attendee who has integrated dance with the Envision Financial Run for Water curriculum to teach empathy to her students. ASIA grade 12 student Bethany Menagh shared a dance after Schonert-Reichl’s interview. Menagh explained, “As we dance we try connect with the struggles of the people that Run for Water helps, we become characters as we portray their lives. It helped me understand the struggles people face.” The Envision Financial Run for Water takes place on May 26 at Mill Lake Park. Eight simple steps to tasting wine like a pro
It feels like it was a long winter and the warmth of the air is bringing people into their yards. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about planting your garden. There is nothing more enjoyable than a summer dinner menu planned and harvested from your own backyard garden. Even if you have a limited amount of space, you can still produce a great deal of food for you and your family. Small space gardening and container gardening has become extremely popular as our yards become smaller and our time to spend weeding and maintaining them shorter. The Fraser Valley’s own super garden hero, Brian Minter, at Minter Gardens in Chilliwack has some great solutions for potted herbs and vegetables. There is a wealth of options for your deck, small patio or in raised beds, in stock at their nursery.
I have found that one of the most satisfying things to grow in small space format in the summer is lettuce. There is something about making a salad from greens picked at your doorstep, and as an added bonus the containers of lettuce are often visually attractive. Minter Gardens also carries a number of dwarf berry bushes so you can harvest fruit in your own small yard. Farmers markets are a great place to buy your flower and vegetable seedlings in the spring. By purchasing from local growers, your plants will have a good chance of survival since they have been grown in this climate. If you are starting your plants from seed, there is a great opportunity this time of year to attend a local seed swap. The Seed of Diversity website (www.seeds.ca) is a great resource to find out about “seedy events”. The Mission Farmer’s Market is hosting an event on March 23rd.

If it smells like wet newsprint, a musty basement, nail polish remover or a highly populated barnyard, chances are the wine is off. 3. Swirl it. Swirling incorporates air and opens up the aromas. Swirling will also move the wine around the glass so you can see if legs or tears form. 4. Smell it after swirling. Now what comes to mind? More of the same or something different?

LOEWEN Anne Anne Enns Loewen died peacefully on March 14, 2013 with her children at her side. She was born in Petrovka, Siberia on June 15, 1922 to Heinrich Enns and Margaretha Klippenstein Enns. At age four, her family immigrated to Canada; she spent the majority of her childhood in Yarrow, BC She married Jacob A. Loewen in 1945, aware of Jacob’s call to be a missionary. They lived and worked in the USA, Colombia, Peru, France, Zambia and Togo before they retired to BC in 1982. She is survived by daughters Gladys Loewen (Mel Felker), Vancouver; Dorothy Joyce Pauls, Abbotsford; Sharon Shepherd (David), Fort Scott, Kansas; son William Loewen (Margaret), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren: 3 siblings: Henry Enns, Pete Enns (Marie), George Enns (Helen) and many very beloved nieces and nephews; Her husband Jacob, son-in-law Al Pauls, sisters Margaret Neufeldt, Helen Neufeldt, Sarah Martens, and brothers John Enns and Jake Enns preceded her in death.
