Crackdown coming for party buses Maple Ridge family welcomes more enforcement by Moni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
The recent death of a teen on a party bus is pushing the province to consider a crack down on the entire industry. “I want to make it very clear that I am willing to suspend the licences of companies that break the law,” said B.C.’s Transportation Minister Mary Polak. “As a mother, and as Minister of Transportation, I will not tolerate unsafe practices that put our young people at risk.” Polak’s promise of more scrutiny came one month after Ernest Azoadam collapsed on a party bus in Surrey. The 17-year-old was rushed to hospital, but never regained consciousness. The exact cause of his death is unknown, but police found evidence of alcohol on board the bus. see Party, p9

Street ministry moving on No longer to host dinners for homeless at CEED centre by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
The street ministry community suppers, during which people come together on Saturday nights to build support and get to know one another, will meet one last time at the CEED Centre in Port
Haney this week, then have to find a new home. The centre, dedicated to community education on environment and development, has been hosting the outreach meals for the past 21 months, but has been asked by the District of Maple Ridge to go elsewhere, said manager Christian Cowley. The CEED Centre society owns the building, at 223rd Street and 117th Avenue, but leases the land on which it sits from the

municipality. “We weren’t told to leave. It was suggested that we do so,” Cowley added. The district asked the street ministry organizers to find a new place after at least two people complained about crime or litter, needles or noise from the dinners. They are run by volunteers, mostly from St. George’s Anglican Church. They make soups, casseroles, and caldrons of hot coffee for anyone in the area who’s hungry.
Robert Mitchell, a one-time church deacon who lived and worked in Port Haney, started the street ministry around 2004, at first walking the streets, handing out sandwiches, then holding larger events, such as barbecues, in front of his business. He died in 2010 from brain cancer. The meals have since been held at the CEED Centre. Cowley says that only about a quarter to a third of guests are homeless. see Ministry, p8

Prominent building to be torn down
‘Gold stars’ Maple Ridge council wants the provincial government to cough up some money and re-open Riverview Hospital as a centre for mental health care and support. The district is hoping other municipalities feel the same way at the Lower Mainland Local Government Association annual convention in May in Harrison Hot Springs. The resolution was to be discussed at Tuesday’s council meeting and points out that Riverview has a proven history for such treatment, with much of the infrastructure already in place. It also says that there’s currently a lack of treatment and housing for the mentally ill, which hurts people and puts “severe” financial and social burdens on local communities. The phased closure of Riverview Hospital was announced in 1990, while the last 40 patients were moved out in 2012. Another resolution on Tuesday’s agenda calls for the provincial government to make the Office of the Seniors Advocate an independent office, reporting to the entire legislature, rather than report to the Minister of Health. It says that seniors issues affect many areas, such as transportation and income support, not just the Ministry of Health. Maple Ridge is also asking that Lower Mainland Local Government Association ask the provincial government for money for the B.C. Association of Agricultural Fairs, in order to keep going the 50 agricultural fairs across B.C. Maple Ridge celebrates its Country Fest July 27 and 28. “These are gold star resolutions,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin.
Former pub, restaurant was destroyed by fire by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
At one time, it was the first Don Cherry’s Sports Grill in western Canada, and before that a popular and reputable restaurant off the Haney Bypass. Now, the building has been ordered demolished, following a Maple Ridge council decision Monday. “Maybe they should send a picture of Don Cherry’s (to Don Cherry). He’d like to see it taken care of as well,” said Coun. Al Hogarth, as council voted to destroy the building that once held The Gourmet Hideaway Restaurant, and more recently, Don Cherry’s at the bottom of 224th Street. Once the order is given, the building owner has a month to do the tear down and two weeks to appeal the order. The property at 11598 – 224th St., is owned by High Class Holdings. The Don Cherry’s bar had been closed before the fire struck. “This will go a long way to help the neighbourhood,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin. According to a staff report, a fire on Aug. 30, 2011 gutted the place and no work has been done on the building since. Council looked at photos of the interior, showing tables and chairs in the same place they were when the fire struck. Gaping holes are in walls, chairs are lined up in a row at the bar, seemingly awaiting reupholstering and new customers, while charred timbers hang from the ceiling. While the big windows are boarded up with plywood, the building has

The report notes that electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems have all been either removed or damaged beyond repair. As well, many doors and windows are broken, while 65 per cent of the interior has been damaged by fire or exposure to the elements. Mould is growing inside. Fire chief Dane Spence listed his own safety concerns after a November 2012 inspection, such as lack of drywall to stop fire spread, an accumulation of combustible junk, and broken glass and sharp objects which could hurt any firefighter entering the building. “The building is not habitable and I find that these premises are now in such a state of disrepair that a fire
starting in them will spread rapidly and endanger life and property.” Anyone who was in the building when a fire started, was at risk, said the report. “Firefighters will not be able to enter this structure to safely fight a fire or rescue anyone that might be inside the structure.” The old building also threatens a new condo building next door that’s almost ready to open, as well as historic Haney House beside it. Spence concludes that the building should either be repaired or torn down. Coun. Bob Masse wanted to know why Monday was the first he’d heard of the order and noted that for other properties, there was more commu-
nication between the property owner and the district before the demolition order. But Holitzki explained later that fire and building inspection reports consider the building beyond repair. If the owners believe that the building can be saved, they can make that case during an appeal of the order. She wasn’t aware of the state of negotiations between the insurance company and owners. Under the order made under the Community Charter, if the hazardous materials aren’t removed and the building torn down and the material, including foundation, hauled away and the excavation filled in within 30 days, then the district can do the work and bill the owner’s property taxes.
Maple Ridge teachers’ union wants funding confrontation Trustees still looking to cut $6 million by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
Six weeks before an election is the perfect time for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board to confront the provincial government over education funding, says the local teachers’ association president. Local trustees are protesting a level of government funding that could see them forced to cut as much as $6 million in costs out of the district’s $129
million operating budget for the 2013-2014 school year. At their March 13 meeting, trustees decried the low funding levels, and decided to seek the support of other boards – many across the province are experiencing a similar budgetary dilemma – to lobby the government for more money. But Maple Ridge Teachers Association president George Serra urges more radical action – the board should pass a needs budget, he says. School boards cannot set local tax rates, and are required by law to pass a balanced budget with the amount of funding provided by the province – based roughly on a per-pupil formula of almost

an ugly task cutting $6 million out of one budget. “It is grim, and they will significantly impact students in this district, with what they’re going to have to do.” Serra appreciates that the board is lobbying Victoria for more money, saying “it’s good to see them taking a stand.” The government announced on Thursday that it would increase the ratio of per-pupil funding to $6,900 per student, which is an increase of $116. According to Ridge Meadows School District treasurer Flavia Coughlan, it won’t make a difference to the coming budget, though. Ken Clarkson, former

board chair and board representative to the B.C. School Trustees Association, said the provincial government simply cannot stop putting increases into the system without expecting the quality of education to drop. He also said the board must be able to cover higher operating costs – heating, hydro, inflation and more. The government said in November that it must also account for increases for employee wage increases out of existing budgets, which sparked a letter of complaint from virtually every school district in the province. “If we only had to deal with declining enrollment, we

would be alright,” said Clarkson. Serra echoed that sentiment: “A year later, it’s more expensive to do business for a variety of reasons, and government doesn’t recognize that at all.” Coughlan will present the final budget estimates to the local board at its April 10 meeting. “Our senior team will be recommending to us where we should make cuts,” noted Clarkson. The results of the board’s online public survey of education spending priorities will be released following spring break, which ends April 2.

$7,000 each. The so-called needs budget would be one based on the actual cost to provide all the services to students that the board sees as necessary, despite not balancing the books. “That would resonate with the public,” said Serra. “And in an election year, the government will care. “It would be a political statement.” The last board to pass a needs budget was Cowichan, and in July 2012 the board was fired by then-education minister Jim Abbott. The Cowichan trustees said they had cut $11 million from their budget in three years. Serra said local trustees face

Liberals address issues in outreach report NDP to release platform in April by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
The Liberals weren’t sorry to see the end of the legislative session last week. The final report into government’s ethnic outreach plan shows government workers used public resources to do Liberal party work in reaching out to ethnic communities. The government’s report into the Multicultural Strategic Outreach Plan said some officials didn’t separate their partisan and government work, and there was “inappropriate” activ- Dalton ity hiring “community liaison contractors.” It also says private e-mails were used to avoid freedom of information requests and there were two “serious instances of g o v e r n m e n t Bocking resources being misused.” Liberal MLA Marc Dalton said the government accepts the report. “It was a tough report, but necessary,” he added. “We wanted all the facts to get out there and they’re out there. It stands in stark contrast to what the NDP has done,” regarding use of NDP MLA constituency money for caucus purposes. “There was certainly a blurring of lines between political staffers.” The report identifies former ministry communications director Brian Bonney as spending about half of his work time on partisan activities. Bonney was paid $124,000 over 18 months, when a group of
premier’s office staff and other government employees developed a plan to hire three ethnic outreach contractors. A September 2012 strategy memo leaked to the NDP detailed a plan to organize ethnicthemed events, apologies for historic wrongs, such as the head tax on Chinese immigrants, and efforts to compile lists of ethnic community members for use by the B.C. Liberal Party in the coming election campaign. Only one contractor began work, and was paid $6,800 before the program was terminated. Both Bonney’s conduct and the hiring of the contractor with a political role are what the report identifies as “serious breaches” of the oath taken by all government employees. Four deputy ministers conducted the review in 14 days collecting, 10,000 pages of documents and directing a forensic analysis of electronic data from government systems. “We took action and there will be changes,” said Dalton, also pointing out that NDP leader Adrian Dix had to resign because he changed the date on a memo when he was chief of staff to Premier Glen Clark. Dalton said the most recent scandal affects politicians on both sides of the political spectrum who try to do their best as elected officials. “It taints everybody and it taints me.” During the campaign for the May 14 election, Dalton said he’ll run on his record as MLA for the last four years, “which is serving the community, with all my efforts – and I

believe that Maple RidgeMission is the better place of because of it and because of my government.” Mike Bocking, NDP candidate in the riding, said that scandals bring government into disrepute, and that the current regime started losing the public’s confidence following the sale of B.C. Rail, then inaccurate provincial deficit numbers and introduction of the
Harmonized Sales Tax. B.C. is reverting back to the previous provincial sales tax and goods and services tax system in April. “That’s why it’s really important that parties say what they’re going to do and then explain how they’re going to do it,” Bocking said. “You can’t do these things and then expect the public to support you.”
The NDP will raise corporate taxes back up to 12 per cent, he added, as well as income taxes on those making more than $150,000. The party also plans to redirect part of carbon tax revenues. A full costed NDP platform will be released in April. Bocking opened his campaign office Saturday at Lougheed and 226th Street.

THE NEWS/opinion News Views
Blurring the line The report by deputy minister John Dyble into the conduct of government staffers confirms the worst — a number of people on the public payroll were busy doing Liberal party business, and ignoring clear government directives not to do so. Whether this was to do with ethnic outreach or swing voters is irrelevant. What is relevant is that there was no clear demarcation between partisan and government work, and people at a high level in the premier’s office knew and approved of this. If people want to engage in partisan work and are on the government payroll, they have a right to so — on their time off. While they are working for the government on projects like ethnic outreach, those projects need to be for government purposes. The provincial government and the B.C. Liberal Party are not one and the same. While the NDP initially raised this serious case of the blurring of partisan and government roles, the party does not have completely clean hands. It has since come out that four-time NDP candidate Gabriel Yiu has been on the payroll of the NDP caucus – which gets its funds from taxpayers. This issue was raised by auditor-general John Doyle while he was looking into the lack of accounting and transparency of the legislature itself. While Yiu did not mix government and party work (his party is in opposition), and the former legislative comptroller signed off on NDP caucus members using part of their constituency funds to pay Yiu, this looks more like a situation where the party made a job for him, at taxpayers’ expense, while waiting for the next election. The lack of transparency and accountability in legislature accounts has made it easy to blur the line between party and government business. And,despite Doyle’s report into this mismanagement of tax dollars, neither party has completely committed to fixing this mess. The report from Dyble will do little to restore public confidence in the current government, particularly as these actions were taking place within the premier’s office, and in the run-up to the election. However, the fact that the NDP has paid former candidates to do political work with tax dollars is also troubling. It all makes it that much harder for voters to decide which candidate and party to choose when they cast their ballots. “None of the above” is not on the ballot. – Black Press

Both parties have betrayed us VICTORIA – There was some public business conducted in the final frantic days of the B.C. legislature session last week, but you likely wouldn’t have heard much about it. Premier Christy Clark’s skimpy governing agenda was overshadowed by the B.C. Views delivery of an internal Tom Fletcher investigation report into her government’s ethnic outreach program. A review by four deputy ministers detailed what reporters already knew from a memo and meeting notes leaked to the NDP. The plan started in the premier’s office, led by Clark’s deputy chief of staff, who resigned as soon as it was made public. A B.C. Liberal Party employee attended the first meeting, expressly intended to organize events to impress immigrant communities, then harvest the goodwill in the form of contact lists for the coming election campaign. After 10,000 e-mails were collected and 27 interviews conducted, they revealed a few significant details. Former multiculturalism minister John Yap knew or should have known that the scheme was being kept secret because it was an inappropriate use of government resources. He won’t be back in cabinet, although Clark said he intends to run for re-election in Richmond-Steveston. Yap’s executive assistant resigned when the report came out, admitting he helped
cover the tracks of political meddling in the hiring of three outreach contractors with sufficient loyalty to the party. Clark insists she knew nothing of this plan. She tabled the investigation report, and then announced that the B.C. Liberal Party had written a $70,000 cheque to the government to cover the estimated cost of the inappropriate political work done by non-political staff. Here’s the part taxpayers may not fully appreciate. There are authorized political staffers all over the legislature, in the premier’s office, the opposition leader’s office and two teams of caucus employees who spend much of their time digging up dirt on the other party. All are paid by you and me. A line is crossed only when a non-political employee such as a ministry communications director acts on behalf of the party. The main offender in that capacity was one Brian Bonney, whose records suggested he spent half of his time on party work. He quit in February, before the plan was leaked, and the party paid back half of his salary for the 18 months he was on the public payroll. NDP outrage over this was blunted by another leaked document. This one was from a never-released 2010 report by Auditor General John Doyle, which condemned a five-year program of skimming money from NDP constituency office budgets all over the province and using it for political work. In a nice bit of symmetry, much of the more than $400,000 was spent to put three-time candidate Gabriel Yiu on the NDP caucus payroll. Yiu’s VancouverFraserview candidate page boasts of his ethnic outreach work, which included
tirelessly warning B.C.’s Chinese community about the evils of the harmonized sales tax. In fact, it was the NDP-Yiu operation that inspired a B.C. Liberal copycat plan. The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing.
The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing. It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. This is the B.C. Liberal-NDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light. Both of these schemes have the same stink. Both are intentional abuse of taxpayers’ money for the political gain of the dominant parties. There is no moral high ground for either of them. The News/letters So long garbage, wood smoke whiners Editor, The News: I moved to Maple Ridge 12 years ago and was surprised that we did not have garbage collection, only recycling. What a great concept, I thought, and was very pleased to participate. I recycle everything that I can; I have a garden compost and we do not waste food. As a result, I only get one full garbage can every three months, which I take to work with me to dispose of. I have zero household garbage cost, and even if I went to the dump, the annual fee would be $40. I read all the comments by people saying we should have municipal garbage collection and all pay $300-plus a year for this service. What is wrong with these people? There are private contractors that will do this service for them. Why should I pay hundreds more to offset their garbage bills when they should cut down on waste and help the environment? Maybe if making a phone call to get a contractor is too difficult for these people, they should move to where it is done for them. And while they are going, take the people who complain about the wood-burning stoves and smells from the farms with them. Tony Allen Maple Ridge

Time now to built alternate route Editor, The News: I have been a resident of Rock Ridge for several years. On Friday, around 7 p.m., while returning home, I encountered a road block on Fern Crescent. There had been, unfortunately, an automobile accident –two vehicles collided head on. Along with many others, I had to wait well over an hour before I could get to my house. People trying to leave Rock Ridge were also unable to do so. I asked several years ago why we are
spending more than $1 million to widen a stretch of Fern Cres., from 232nd Street to Eagles Hall, when the following section is narrow, winding and lined with trees right to the edge of the pavement? A while ago, a tree fell on a power line at Fern and 232nd, closing the road for more than eight hours. I was under the impression when I moved to Rock Ridge that a second access road would be built, after the development was complete – with about 3,500 homes. Say each one has two ve-
hicles. That’s 7,000 a day travelling in and out of the area, not including those in surrounding neighbourhoods. When building a community of that size, basically on the side of a mountain, shouldn’t the roads be in place first? I understand that development fees are charged for such infrastructure, and trust that such funds are secured. I would also suggest it is time to use them, to built an alternate route. Ray Trimble Maple Ridge
Someone please explain why wall was replaced Editor, The News: I was surprised to learn from a TransLink engineer last week that the new, $817,000 sound wall leading to the Golden Ears Bridge will not buffer noise much different than the existing one. This information was given to people in Pitt Meadows, but a decision was made to build a new wall. If this information is fact, and the existing wall is sold to Metro Vancouver, as planned, the sale will not recover tax dollars. Taxpayers fund both TransLink and Metro.
When the original cost of the existing wall (say $500,000) is added to the cost to remove it – dismantle, transport, store, along with professional and administrative fees – it appears this is a very expensive project, with little or no benefit to taxpayers. Why replace the wall? Before the Maple Ridge industrial park was established, both local councils agreed a sound barrier berm would be built between the industrial area and Pitt Meadows residents, east of the Katzie Slough. Could investigation, insight, planning, free material, tipping fees (same
as paid to Pitt Meadows airport) have completed an improved, environmentally friendly sound berm, with trees and shrubbery to filter exhaust gases? Should mayors and councillors be responsible for decisions with little benefit to taxpayers? Who represents Pitt Meadows on TransLink? And at what cost? Ken Joyner Pitt Meadows Editor’s note: Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin represents Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation

He manages Maple Towers complex on 222nd Street on a part-time basis and said he got fooled recently by allowing a bad tenant. So far, Maple Ridge council hasn’t raised the topic of Hogarth’s management of the property. “The community can do that,” Daykin said.

‘Put safeguards in place, not shut down industry’ Party from front
Ministry staff are set to meet with party bus operators on Thursday to make sure companies understand their responsibilities and obligations. Polak stressed that a failure to comply with regulations by allowing passengers to drink alcohol on board will have serious consequences for the bus companies. “Quite simply, failure to comply will result in the suspension of their license,” she added. “We are also reviewing the licensing framework to identify ways to further strengthen our ability to monitor party buses and impose sanctions.” Julie Raymond, whose
daughter Shannon died in 2008 after taking ecstasy and drinking alcohol on a party bus, is optimistic there will be changes. “It’s too late for Shannon and Ernest, but hopefully whatever measures are taken will prevent another family from losing a child,” said Raymond, a Maple Ridge resident. Raymond and her other daughter Danielle have asked to attend Thursday’s meeting with transportation ministry staff. Raymond does want the entire industry to get shut down, but to see proper regulations in place to prevent deaths. “I hope that the changes are reasonable enough that they
will provide a safe place to be. You can’t just shut the businesses down. The intent is to put safeguards in place. They certainly aren’t there now,” she added. Raymond wants bus drivers to have first-aid training and all companies to require chaperones when underage passengers are on board. The District of Maple Ridge, meanwhile, has asked the RCMP to step up enforcement locally. The district’s substance misuse committee is also applying for a federal grant to educate parents about the risks of underage drinking and its effects on brain development. Part of

that campaign could include education about party buses, which are popular with suburban teens and young adults. Coun. Cheryl Ashlie said parents need to know it’s not OK to condone and facilitate underage drinking. “You would never think of putting alcohol into a baby, but quite frankly, folks, your baby is still growing until they are 19 and even older,” she added. “You are still impacting their full growth potential and their reasoning skills.” Ashlie has also contacted B.C.’s ministry of health to suggest similar awareness be included in their harm reduction strategies.

Grout said the city will also revisit metering for all properties in 2014. Current estimates to install meters at residential properties is between $800 to $1,200 per household, or $2.4 million to $3.6 million in total. In the meantime, the city continues to remind its residents to conserve and use less water by enforcing summer restrictions, subsidizing rain barrels and offering rebates on more efficient toilets.

The City of Pitt Meadows is one of the largest consumers of water in Metro Vancouver, with greenhouse operations using the most. In 2011, the city purchased 3.32 million cubic meters of water from Metro Vancouver, supplying water to a population of approximately 17,700 residents and 594 nonresidential water users, or 571 cubic metres per capita. The city still falls far below Delta, which gulps more than almost 700 cubic metres of water per capita. “Our per capita consumption is high because of our population size and the fact that we are the only municipality that has such an extensive rural water distribution system,” explained city director of operations Kim Grout. Although the city’s waterworks bylaw restricts service connections to just one per property in the rural area, the demand for more water for agricultural uses continues to increase. Flat rate customers in the city are still subsidizing metered customers, who account for approximately 40 per cent of the community’s total water usage but only generate 23 per cent of the revenue. Pitt Meadows is also faced with an ongoing challenge of ensuring the city’s water util-
frastructures. A comparison of metered rates in other municipal jurisdictions in 2012 shows that Pitt Meadows’ rates are less than those charged by the other municipalities surveyed. Grout said the chal-

Overwhelmed by stress and anxiety? STRESSED OUT? FRAZZLED? The Mental Calmness formula provides natural anxiety and stress control without the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. For anyone feeling over-committed in this 24/7 world, this safe supplement restores mental calmness and promotes relaxation. Mental calmness contains pure L-Theanine (suntheanine®), a unique amino acid derived from green tea.
How L-Theanine works: It works in two important ways. First, L-Theanine generates alpha brain waves. The brain transmits four different types of brain waves that are determined by frequency: gamma, theta, alpha, and beta. Gamma waves are present during sound sleep. Theta waves indicate dozing or slight sleeping. In contrast, beta waves are present during an awake, excited state, whereas alpha waves indicate an awake yet relaxed state. Secondly, researchers also suggest that L-Theanine plays a role in increasing the formation of GABA (gamma amino butyric acid), a neurotransmitter that is key to relaxation and memory.
Healthy Living Greenfighter hungry By Paige Charron
Sunday: Today I did a bunch of laps at the pool in the morning, and a bunch of stretches that were recommended by CITAHealth this evening. I feel energized. I’m noticing a few significant changes: I am not drinking the beer in my fridge very quickly. Yay.
It was not uncommon for me to have two beers at night, or even three, while watching the hockey games, or Bones (mmm ... Booth). Anyways, now that I have new goals, and a new ‘fit’ focus, I haven’t been choosing beer. Lemon water, hot water, or light juice is what I’ve been reaching for. That change makes me feel
strong (rrrrrr). Another change: I am really hungry more often. Because I’m not devouring large plates of foods and carbs, my stomach is growling much more than ever. Yikes ... So I find I’m snacking more, but healthy snacks, like sugar peas, almonds, cut up peppers. The thing is, when I do start to eat, I actually feel myself getting full, and satisfied much quicker than before. Neato. I’m 152 pounds, so I’ve lost five pounds ...

aster is just around the corner and kids everywhere are getting ready for Easter egg hunts and presents from the Easter bunny. Small animal rescues are bracing for the influx of bunnies, since far too many people still think that a real live bunny is a good Easter present. Unfortunately, like many other animals that are given as gifts, a large number of these easter bunnies end up at shelters, or worse, dumped in a park. For some reason, rabbits are a disposable animal in our society. Their plight does not get the same attention as that of homeless cats or dogs, and yet bunnies are abandoned just as often. Oddly enough, people think that it is OK to take their bunny and ‘set it free’ in a park once they are no longer interested in taking care of it. Setting a bunny free is no different than taking your dog or cat, driving it out in the middle of nowhere, and dumping it. Bunnies don’t survive any better in the wild than any other animal. In fact, rabbits are easy prey as they have few natural defences. Abandoned pet rabbits also do a lot of harm to the habitat where they have been released. And because rabbits breed so well, it is not uncommon for them to be culled when their numbers get too great. Anyway you slice it, your ‘free’ bunny is bound to have a short and harsh life. The bunnies who do end up staying in a home don’t always fare much better. People have a lot of misconceptions about what a rabbit requires to live a happy and healthy life. Their
Bunnies are social creatures and need proper exercise. diet is surprisingly complex, and if not fed properly they can easily develop medical issues that may lead to death. It is not sufficient to simply stick them in a cage and forget about them for five to six years. Rabbits are social creatures. They need interaction as well as regular exercise. The standard bunny cages give them little room for anything more than a stretch. Outside habitats for bunnies need to have outdoor areas for hopping, as well as indoor areas for protection from the elements. It is not sufficient to put your bunny outside in a wire bottom cage. Their feet do not have the proper padding and this sort of set up is painful for them. You also need to consider who will be spending time with your bunny, and how much time they will be given. As I said before, they are social creatures, so a life alone in a cage, inside or out, is simply unacceptable. Bunnies can be trained to use a litter box and will sit on the couch and cuddle with you like a cat or dog. If this

is not the vision you have of your pet bunny, then accept the fact that you will need a companion for your bunny, Because they tend to be territorial. Introducing a new rabbit into your home takes some time. Read up on the rules of introduction, or consider getting siblings to begin with (please spay and neuter them, of course). Bunnies are cute. Bunnies are soft. Bunnies are cuddly. But bunnies are also feeling, complex creatures, they require proper care. They need a proper diet, proper exercise, a proper habitat, and they have complex social structures that you need to learn about. They will not survive in the wild, and they are not meant to live alone in a tiny bunny cage with just enough room to turn around. Unless you are willing to invest the time, money, and energy into caring for your bunny properly, then you are better off buying a stuffed bunny. Or perhaps a chocolate one. There are many things to think about before you start renovating one of the most important rooms in the house.
Starting a kitchen reno By Maggie Calloway Making the decision to renovate your kitchen is one of the most exciting and scary decisions you can make. A kitchen is more than just another room; in many ways it’s the very heart of the home and you need to get it right. Hundreds of decisions will have to be made, each one dependent on the next. No wonder it is so daunting.

Georgie winners take home the gold My House Design/Build Team and MAC Marketing multiple winners at CHBA awards. By Kerry Vital The top tier of British Columbia’s residential construction industry was honoured at the Georgie Awards in Vancouver on Feb. 23. Presented by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC, the awards have been presented for the past 21 years and showcase the high-quality work of B.C.’s home building and renovation community.
“This year’s Georgie Awards winners showcase the culture of imagination and ingenuity that only grows stronger throughout our province each year,” says CHBA BC President Nathan Stone. “From Vancouver Island to Whistler, from the Okanagan to the Interior, the winners and the finalists continue to show us that B.C. is a true leader when it comes to excellence in the residential construction industry.” Among the big winners at the awards was My House Design/Build Team, who left with five awards, including Best Residential Renovation $500,000 to $799,999, Best Renovation – Any Room and Best Interior Design Custom Residence – New or Renovation.
“It’s an honour (to win), not only for us and our clients, but for all home builders, as we are now recognized as creating some of the finest homes and projects in all of North America,” says My House President and Managing Director Graeme Huguet. “This has truly been a blessed year for us.” Stone agrees, saying, “My House Design/ Build Team’s Waterfront Hideaway is a fantastic example of how homes can be innovative, sustainable and completely unique, while setting the bar higher for our province’s home building and renovation community.”
Renovations make up a huge part of the residential construction industry, and billions are spent every year by Canadian homeowners looking to improve upon their homes. But how can you make sure that you’re hiring a reputable person to renovate your home? The RenoMark program, developed by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, gives homeowners the ability to find a reliable, professional renovator easily. “The RenoMark designation assures consumers that the renovator they are dealing with has completed industryleading education requirements and are part of a professional network apprised of the latest technologies and designs,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “As well, all RenoMark holders have committed themselves to a code of business ethics and offer warranties on the work they do, offering peace of mind to home-owners that RenoMark professionals stand behind the work they do.” A RenoMark renovator must abide by several rules, including being a member in good standing of the GVHBA, provide a detailed written contract for all

While it may be tempting to hire someone under the table, this can have huge repercussions if something goes wrong, whether that’s someone getting hurt or a job not being completed on time. Hiring a renovator with the RenoMark designation means that you don’t have to worry about some of the typical stresses that come with renovating your home. You can also be assured that your renovator is up-to-date with all the latest trends, materials and regulations, which protects both you and the renovator. An added bonus of having a professional renovator with the RenoMark certification is that it can increase your resale value down the road. Having a professionally done job means that the work will stand the test of time and will look great. Research done by RE/MAX shows that the top projects undertaken by homeowners every year include kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, replacing windows or doors, replacing or upgrading the roof and adding a fireplace. Even if you don’t plan to sell your home, being able to enjoy your new renovation without having to worry about corners being cut and regulations being ignored is well worth it. The RenoMark Renovator’s Guide lays out a list of steps that homeowners need to take before beginning a renovation. The first is to carefully plan your project, including researching what is required, from permits to the trades involved. You also need to consider whether you need to move out of your home during the process, and how long the renovation will take. The second step is to hire your renovator, and ask about his or her experience with projects that are similar to the one you want. The third step the guide recommends is to get a written contract with the renovator in order to protect both

For example, if you require everything to be cleaned up by the end of each day, or want a specific room to be protected during construction, make sure it is in writing. The fourth step is to check on the progress during your renovation. It is very important to keep in regular contact with the people working on your house. This leads into the fifth recommendation, discuss your project. If you notice something that you want changed or you have any questions, don’t hesitate to talk to your renovator and make sure you’re both on the same page. Finding a use for those reclaimed pieces By Maggie Calloway An interior design style which has great appeal is mixing modern, with sometimes very stark lines, with pieces made of reclaimed wood and even old machinery repurposed into functional furniture. The advantage of repurposing old boards and machinery is they are mostly one-of-a-kind and as such much more interesting. Craig Pearce, principal of Union Wood Supply Co., is passionate about aging objects of industrial origin and designing and building with reclaimed wood. In fact, he cheerfully admits he was born into the wrong era. After “making his bones” working with a rustic log cabin furniture maker, Pearce went on to furnish his home with his own designs then filled the demands from friends. It was a natural next step to form Union Wood Supply Co. “As far as finding architectural salvage goes I have spent many years doing this as a hobby. I have travelled all over North America and made many great contacts,” he says. “I still travel a lot because salvagers usually specialize in one or two things and I want as much variety as possible so I still need to hit the road. We go to cities we know has some good old industrial history and start checking it out.” Even talking about the “hunt” as he calls it, you can hear his excitement. “We just got back from Oakland, California and bought a couple of pieces from an antique dealer. When we got talking he said if we wanted to look at some industrial pieces we should meet him at an isolated warehouse,” Pearce says. “This is how we find some great
pieces that are not always on display; we recognize each other.” Old-growth wood is found in demolition sites, salvage yards and abandoned buildings. Other prizes such as barn doors, lighting and old bricks are carefully removed and transported back to the shop to sometimes become part of a new project and sold. These pieces are unique and often tell a story of a time and place no longer part of our more fast-paced life. They are often pieces made with pride to last more than a lifetime. Working out of what was once a mechanic’s garage, clients at Union Wood Supply can browse the showroom and even the workshop to get inspired. And if what you are looking for isn’t there, just wait and magic may happen.

Let there be light: finding great lighting takes some research By Maggie Calloway So you are all excited about your impending renovation. You have met with your architect, chosen a contractor and are all ready to begin … or are you? One professional who should be part of the team from the beginning is a lighting professional, which is not to be confused with an electrician. This oftenforgotten professional is key to how you will live in your renovated home and, even more importantly, how you will feel in the space going forward. Greg Chambers of Light The Store couldn’t agree more. “I advise clients to do some homework, go through publications, magazines and the like and see how everything fits together. When they get a sense of what they want and what feeling they want to create in the space, consult with a lighting designer,” he says. “The one thing which changes a space the most is lighting and some people are very much affected by lighting so it is very critical to the success of the project.” Delores Ginthner of the University of Minnesota has done research into the effect of lighting on how we feel and how we use space. “Thinking about the layers of light and how light affects the users of a space on both a psychological and behavioural level will present you with a mental lighting design concept when someone asks how you light a certain space,” she says. “Lighting is a key factor in helping the space meet the intent of its owner and the needs of its users. Keep that in mind, and remember that often incorporating a lighting designer into the design team could be quite beneficial to the outcome.” “It is a huge advantage when clients bring their plans or drawings into our showroom because we can review the lighting specifica-

tions and show how it will look in the space. This is the point where changes can be made if the client does not feel comfortable with the degree of light, the intensity, etc.,” Chambers says. “We have the ability to put the client into the atmosphere which is hard to imagine just looking at drawings. It is much easier to change drawings than change lighting when the renovation is complete. Lighting is the hardest element to figure out because it is so individual. We can demonstrate how say a halogen, a fluorescent or an LED is going to
look, function and feel.” We are beginning to see how important it is to get lighting right. How frustrating it would be to finish a renovation which looks fantastic but then realize there is nowhere for a big reader to snuggle down with a good book or a home chef to enjoy working in the kitchen. Renovations are stressful enough and to end with a disappointment would be horrific. Take the time to seek out the right professionals; you’ll be glad you did.

Skylights great for more than just letting light pour in By Maggie Calloway If there is one thing which will make a huge difference in both how you live in a space and, even more importantly, how the family feels about the space they live in, it has got to be the installation of skylights. We live in a climate with many months of grey rainy days. This is one of the prices we pay for the lush scenery, but if we live in a home with a dark interior the other price we could pay is the effect that has on our mood. One of the worries of homeowners considering installing skylights is the fear of leakage. Technology has advanced a long way and Velux, a major manufacturer and installer of skylights and a leader in developing the No Leak Skylight, recognizes those fears and has addressed them. Mark Taylor of Velux explains that the company is very aware of the homeowner’s trepidation. “The No Leak Skylight addresses those concerns and so sure are we of our product we offer excel-
lent warranties,” he says. “You are right about the need for light in our climate and the most efficient way of introducing natural light into the home is by skylights. ... There are other benefits as well such as energy savings because there is reduced need for artificial light and the passive solar heat gain in the winter months. In the summer months skylights help immensely with ventilation.” One of the most efficient ways of ventilating the home is through the roof which has to do with inside pressure; heat rises and can easily exhaust through an open skylight. “We can, by installing skylights, ventilate the home, facilitate more natural light penetrating the home and create a more healthy living environment,” Taylor says. The Velux website has a fascinating simulation, called the Daylight Visualizer, which shows how light from variously positioned skylights will travel though a room. It’s a great tool to help you make a decision on the placement depending on the proposed use of the room.

Growing herbs a great addition to the garden By Maggie Calloway With the explosion of interest in cooking and baking at home, it should not come as a surprise the parallel interest in growing herbs. Even if you live in the tiniest condo and cannot even contemplate a garden, you can still have almost the same fresh herb selection as a full-on garden. Miles Hunter of David Hunter Garden Centers, is an enthusiastic champion of growing your own herbs. “If you are growing herbs for the first time, start with something easy to grow; rosemary, mint, basil is a great start,” he says. “Some people have a problem with basil and the most common problem is they buy a plant that has been raised in a greenhouse then transferred from a greenhouse environment to an indoor environment and it doesn’t always transition well. I recommend starting basil from seed even if you are growing outside; it is very easy to germinate in a pot on a windowsill.” He notes that a mistake he often sees is when basil is put outside too early, as after-dark temperatures must be over 10 degrees Celsius or the plant might wither. He also tells people to keep their mint in a pot or an area where it can be contained as it grows so quickly. The holy trinity of herbs is basil, oregano and thyme. “Thyme is a great herb because there are lots of varieties,” Hunter says. “Thyme is one plant that has so many different flavours, like lemon thyme which is wonderful and spicy thyme, so there are lots of choices; common English thyme would be the most popular.” You also need to keep in mind that though most herbs are perennial and with care can last for a few years, basil and cilantro are not perennials and need to be planted anew each year. Asked what is the best potting mix if you are growing in pots, Hunter says an all-purpose potting soil is generally the best. You want something with good drainage which often includes a mix of peat moss and perlite, and don’t forget to water on a regular basis. Hunter suggests companion planting is something to really consider when growing herbs but be careful about what you choose to put together. “Mint is better on its own because it will take over the entire pot,” Hunter says. “Dill is another (that’s) best on its own as it doesn’t always play well with others. Basil is excellent when grown alongside tomatoes; it helps influence the flavour of the tomato.” The three herbs Hunter recommends if you are growing herbs indoors are cilantro, basil and chives. These are great on a windowsill so if you want to succeed these three are your best bet. For outside you could put rosemary in the centre of a pot with some oregano and thyme around the side which will cascade over the side making a very attractive addition to the garden.

Turn on a home renovation show, and you’re likely to see eager homeowners knocking down walls to open the kitchen to the family room. There are many supporters of the open floor plan, particularly those who entertain frequently or like to keep an eye on children throughout the house. Although open floor plans are touted, there are plenty of people who have never been enamored with having all of their rooms flowing into one. There also are some people who prefer a different style. For those who are not fans of the open floor plan, blame the excess of the 1980s for their inception. Linda Chu of Out of Chaos says that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to organizing your home. It all depends on your personal needs.
Easing the chaos in your home
Martin Knowles photo
Getting your home in order for the spring doesn’t have to be time-consuming and labour-intensive, says Linda Chu of Out of Chaos. By Maggie Calloway The thing about owning way too much ‘stuff’ is it affects not only how you live in your home but how you feel internally. Most of us suffer to some extent with the 21st century malady called ‘more is better’ instead of ‘less is more’. Some of us are drowning in ‘more’ and need to come up for air. Our closets are stuffed with things we never wear, never cook with and never
play with. Rooms aren’t used for their original purpose because of the piles of things impeding any normal use. And if that isn’t bad enough, we are now renting storage space to handle the overflow. If you are looking around at piles of clutter and it seems just too overwhelming or you just need help creating systems to maintain order, there is a solution. To help you get from there to a new start imagine what your home will be like to live in once the chaos is removed. Wideopen spaces, windows scrubbed to let the

If that is worth pursuing, take some hints from Linda Chu, principal of Out of Chaos, a professional organizer service. “People have such an attachment, such an emotional attachment to their home they feel if it is in disarray there must be something wrong with them,” she says. “The reality is there’s so much pressure these days between working, kids and their activities, parents, etc. that something has to give. People should know that realizing they need help in this area of their lives should be empowering.” One of the mistakes most of us make when we realize things are getting a bit out of control is to run out and buy beautiful baskets and containers to control the chaos instead of concentrating on function. “Organization is an essential; it is also relative to the individual; it is (also) the functionality. Just because it looks good doesn’t mean it works,” Chu says. “This is not to say you can’t have some really nice visual pieces which work but the main focus is on function.” If you want to get your home organized by yourself but feel totally overwhelmed, try this method. Keeping in mind your home didn’t get cluttered overnight, vow not to get discouraged if it isn’t organized in a weekend. Start in one room and every day get rid of at least three things. Some days you may feel inspired and get rid of many more but the next day you’re back to at least three. Pick a room and start there until the room is organized so you feel you are making progress. Three a day doesn’t seem like much? In a year you will have gotten rid of at least 1,095 things you don’t need. Hiring a professional company like Out of Chaos or taking on the job yourself could be the very best gift you can give your family and yourself and all is takes is that first step.
Tidying away just a few things per day will make a big dent in the clutter in your house. Installing shelving or bookshelves is a great place to start. Martin Knowles photos
Make the most of small bathrooms Renovating bathrooms is commonly at the top of home improvement to-do lists. Though some rooms around the house may remain timeless, bathrooms show their age much more easily.
A frameless shower can take up less space in a small bathroom.
Although many may dream about creating a spa-type oasis in their homes, not everyone is lucky enough to have a large bathroom, much less a large budget for a full-scale renovation. Small bathrooms are common, particularly in older homes, but they needn’t force homeowners to compromise on style when renovating. By thinking creatively, homeowners can maximize their spaces and redo bathrooms in ways that bring out their best assets. When space is at a premium, it’s best to look for fixtures and items that fit with the scale of the bathroom. Although you may want a large vanity and cabinet in which to hide all of your toiletries, this may not be practical -- taking up most of the bathroom real estate. Instead, look for elegant pedestal sinks that have a much smaller profile. Use optical illusions to make the bathroom appear more roomy. For example, lay tile diagonally to create the impression of space. A large mirror will reflect the room back and make it appear much larger than it really is. Select lighter hues in paint colors and accessories. Dark paints and fixtures could make the room feel cramped. In a small bathroom, it may make the space feel claustrophobic. Instead, think light and bright and the room will instantly feel more airy. Minimize wall hangings. Filling the walls with
knickknacks may contribute to clutter and make the space appear closed in. Use decorative items sparingly. If possible, store towels in a closet outside of the bathroom. This way you won’t have to devote space inside the bathroom to a closet, leaving more room for other things. While some like the thought of a separate bath and shower, in smaller bathrooms this may not be possible. Instead, look for a combined shower and bath, or select a walk-in shower with a much smaller profile. Maximize wall space if you need storage. Find cabinets that will fit beneath windows or be able to fit in thin areas between sinks and toilets. Over the toilet is prime area for cabinetry. Consider a frameless shower. This is a partitioned area of the bathroom that’s set aside for the shower and is typically only cordoned off by a thin wall or piece of glass. Think about installing a skylight if you prefer natural light if there is no room for a traditional window. Thinking creatively can help turn a cramped bathroom into a space-saving and well-designed room homeowners desire.

A student doing homework in the dining room may be disturbed by the television blaring in the family room. Talking on the phone or even finding a quiet nook to read a book may be challenging. Pro: Open floor plans allow for more family time together in one space than a home with a more compartmentalized layout. Con: People who are collectors or who have a lot of furniture or accent items may find that open
floor plans do not work well with this type of design mantra. Pro: Because several rooms run into one another, color choices for walls and furnishings in a home with an open floor plan can be limited and cohesive, making choices easier. Con: On the flip side, those who want to incorporate different color schemes and eclectic styles may have difficulty deciding on where to “end” rooms or how to co-mingle furniture.

Staying in your home through your golden years By Kerry Vital As the baby boomer generation ages, it has become more and more important recently to ensure that you are comfortable and safe in your own home. Sometimes that entails moving to a smaller home or living with a relative, but that’s not always the best option for some. When you’ve lived in a home for decades and perhaps even raised a family there, your emotional attachment to your home can outweigh the other considerations as you age. Luckily, there are several renovations that can be done to a home that will allow you to stay in your home through your golden years. “People are used to being independent,” says Gordon Wilson of G. Wilson Construction Co. “They still want that freedom.” Widening doorways, above, and installing a walk-in or rollOne of the things that people request when in shower, bottom right, are two popular renovations when renovating their home is a walk-in or roll-in homeowners decide they want to stay in their home for the long shower. This helps reduce the risk of falling haul. when stepping in or out of the bathtub. Having that yard is especially important for those who love “You have to prepare to have people in to garden, since getting outside for a bit of fresh air and getting your home,” Wilson says. “You need to select your fingers in the dirt can be a mood-lifter someone that you get along with.” Another possible renovation is the installation of an elevator An important thing to consider is whether or a stairlift, which allow you to continue living in a home with you’re willing to stay in your home while multiple floors. However, Wilson says that the ability to live on construction is happening. a single floor is something that people should consider. Though “I tell people to pretend they’re camping,” walking may not be difficult at the start, a walker or wheelchair Wilson says. The scope of the work will factor may be a necessity later on. Choosing a patio material A backyard patio is a place where friends and family members can convene in the nice weather to enjoy dining al fresco. In the cooler months, a patio is a great place to gather around a fire pit. A patio is one area of a home that can provide a great place for homeowners to relax outside. Many waver when choosing a material for their patio because each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Wood, stone, concrete, paving blocks, and tile all can be used to create appealing and functional patios. Because of the widespread availability of concrete, pavers and wood, many patios are constructed of these materials. Concrete is one of the more affordable patio materials. With stamped concrete, homeowners can enjoy more colors and designs than ever before, and new technology in tinting and styling enables concrete to look like other expensive stone materials. For the experienced mason, laying concrete is a relatively easy job. It may be more difficult for the novice do-it-
yourselfer because laying concrete requires knowledge of grading and also installing spacers correctly to deter cracking. Concrete is durable, but over time cracking is inevitable. Some concrete requires the application of a sealant every few years to protect coloring and durability. Around pools, concrete can become slippery when wet if an anti-skid agent was not applied. Many homeowners gravitate toward paving stones because their varied texture and shapes can create quite an appealing look in a yard. If installed correctly, pavers will not crack and it is possible to easily add on to an original design because of the portability of these stones. And because they can be moved, pavers can be repaired from underground and stones can be replaced without any demolition. Homeowners like that pavers can quickly make a yard look high-end. Although pavers can be installed as a do-it-yourself project, such installation can be labor-intensive. The ground needs to be accurately leveled and prepped before the stones can be placed to help ensure there is no shifting or movement. Such detailed work is beyond the abilities of many homeowners, who typically pay to have the stones professionally installed. Weeds can pop up between the blocks, so maintenance is necessary. Also, paving blocks are slightly uneven and they can loosen, which can prove a safety hazard to the elderly or young children who aren’t surefooted. Wood is often thought of in a raised deck scenario, but it can also be laid at ground level to create a low-lying patio. A wood patio can be unique and stained or painted in a variety of colors. It also may be less expensive to install than concrete or pavers. If the shape is relatively simple, a do-ityourselfer also may be able to do the job without hiring a professional.
Paving stones are one option in the different hardscape materials for your yard.
Though wood is a good choice for many homeowners, it is one of the more maintenance-heavy materials. Wood must be routinely cleaned, stained and sealed. Even with the best care, wood can warp, splinter and chip. When surrounding a pool, wood may deteriorate after coming in contact with chemicals from the pool water. Though most wood is treated, it may be susceptible to boring insects and other pests. If you’re renovating your outside space, take time to make the right decision on the patio material that fits your budget and gives your patio the look you desire.

Bunnies are work Jennifer York, the new branch manager of the Maple Ridge SPCA, holds a bunny currently up for adoption, although she cautions against doing so for Easter. Rabbits can live up to 15 years and require a high level of care. They have to be brushed regularly to remove excess hair, their nails have to be trimmed, veterinarians should trim their teeth, they need unlimited access to Timothy hay, daily fresh fruits and dark leafy vegetables and lots of space to hop around. “Do your research before you adopt any animal,” says York, adding that if you have already have a bunny that you think is too much work, don’t dump it. Swollen Members stop in Maple Ridge March 23 on their cross-Canada tour
“It seems to be a generation of kids growing up who appreciate honesty. “We have a generation of kids who care about the environment, who totally accept gays, are against racism and think gangster stuff is bull shit. I can’t wait to see them grow up.” Six years ago, Madchild’s fans would have sniggered if they heard him say he wants to make the word “love” cool again. These days, he doesn’t care. He’s embraced the duality of being “bad ass” yet nice. “It’s a weird balance for me,” he says. “Ben Harper or Bob Marley those are artists who made the word love cool. No one thought they were soft or corny … these guys are people I can relate to . They enjoyed life and lived it. That’s where I would like to end up ideally.”

arely catching his breath, Shane Bunting rattles off the things that pack his schedule these days. Four days, five videos, one year and two albums. For Bunting, aka Madchild, being busy is therapeutic. “I’m running around like a chicken with my head cut off,” Madchild says with a laugh. “I’m not messing around anymore.” Since releasing his solo debut, Dope Sick, which chronicled his addiction to OxyContin, Madchild has been working harder than ever. “It was a crazy roller coaster and guess who is to blame for all of it – me,” says Madchild, admitting his role in a saga that almost sunk the Juno-award winning group. A founding member of the hiphop group Swollen Members, Madchild spiralled out of control after the group’s fourth studio album, Black Magic, bombed. The group was eventually turfed from Nettwerk Records because of Madchild’s association with the Hell’s Angels. When Madchild reflects on his descent into addiction, he’s remorseful. In fact, he’d like to apologize to Nettwerk’s Terry McBride. “I was a little bit of a prick back then,” he says. More than two years of sobriety however have allowed Madchild to confront and make peace with his demons.

Machine, released last week. On Beautiful Death Machine, Madchild and Prevail return to the expressive, emotional, poetic, and clever lyrical style that has earned them legions of fans, while Rob The Viking provides a dark backdrop of sick macabre beats. “We just went back to that original, signature Swollen-sound that made us successful in the first place,” says Madchild. These days Madchild is inspired by the people around him, his spirituality and positively. He readily admits the gangster-life he once embraced is fake and futile. “I talk about positivity,” says Madchild. “But I do it with edge and say [f..] 20 times in a song. It’s about being truthful and honest with myself and fans. I think that’s embraced now.” The young fans Madchild’s raps to these days are a source of inspiration and hope.

Since the release of his selfproduced debut album, The Beginning, Cityreal (aka Remi Huot) has earned three Western Canadian Music Award nominations, collaborated with notable artists like Swollen Members, D-Sisive, and Moka Only, and shared the stage with the likes of K’Naan, Warren G and Ghostface Killah. Last month, he released a Cityreal new full length album, Good Morning Blues, with Blues veteran Wes Mackey, which has already garnered considerable praise. Both Cityreal and Wes were heavily influenced by the gritty, dark and simplistic sound of the very early blues musicians, pioneers such as Leadbelly, Robert Johnson and Albert King. “The concept for the album was to pair traditional blues elements with modern production and sampling techniques,” says Huot, and the result is one of the more unique hip-hop albums created in recent years.

Bernie and Tyson Aubin host a charity concert at the ACT on Saturday.
Tyson Aubin slowly punches the name of his favourite band. N-I-C-K-E-L-B-A-C-K. With a dad who was the original drummer for Loverboy, Aubin can’t help but love music. His father Bernie’s iPhone is full of photographs of Tyson and his favourite bands. Tyson, who has cerebral palsy, has pestered his father for years to hold a concert at the ACT. This year, he finally agree. Bernie Aubin and his band, The Headpins, have recruited Jerry Doucette to play a charity show this Saturday, a few days after Tyson turns 23. “His father wanted to make sure this birthday is one for the memories,” says Clay Ingle, who has been Tyson’s support worker for the past four years. One of the west coast’s most energetic and magnetic live groups, The Headpins have an incomparable chemistry with
their audience making them one of the hottest commodities in Canadian rock. Fronted by Darby Mills, whose signature growl is matched only by her purr, the band has produced such hits as Turn It Loud, one of the greatest rock anthems of all time. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Easter Seals. Ingle has rappelled down the side of a building five times to raise funds for the charity. This year, Tyson hopes to join him. “We are hoping this event will be a sell out so the charity will get a large portion of the revenue from this great concert featuring two great acts,” says Ingle. Tyson in the meantime is getting ready for a busy two weeks. The Maple Ridge resident will be performing on stage Saturday and returns to the ACT next week for his role in the musical Oliver!. • The Headpins and Jerry Doucette play the ACT March 23. Tickets are $42.50.

Oliver return to ACT Oliver, the musical, returns for a second run at the ACT next week. The production by SPECC-tacular Theatre is back by popular demand. Adapted from the book Oliver Twist, written by Charles Dickens, Lionel Bart’s musical is filled with unforgettable, foot tapping songs, including Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, As Long As He Needs Me, Where Is Love, and many more. Oliver! isn’t feel-good fare. It’s the story of
a young orphan boy who flees a work house and stumbles into the mean streets of London, where he struggles to survive while meeting some memorable and downright scary characters along the way. He gets entangled with a gang of pickpockets, is threatened by an East End villain and witnesses a brutal murder.

Hometown Heroes tourney caps hockey season Two local pee wee rep teams play for gold
Colleen Flanagan / The NewS
Aiden Serr (centre) of the host Rustlers tries to control a bouncing puck during a bantam game against Nanaimo at the annual Ridge Meadows Hometown Hockey Hero Tournament at Pitt Meadows Arenas on Sunday.
One of the major local minor hockey events of the year wrapped up the 2012-2013 season in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows over the weekend. The annual Hometown Hero tournament saw 47 teams competing, including eight rep teams from the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association. The locals were welcoming hosts – handing out most of the hardware to their guests. Two of the three pee wee teams played for tournament championships. In the pee wee tournament, Ridge Meadows A2 came sixth out of seven teams in its division. New Westminister beat Campell River 4-1 in the final. Ridge Meadows pee wee A3 team finished in second place in a three-team pool, then in the semi-final defeated Prince George 4-1. The Rustlers, however, fell in the fi-
nal, 3-2 against Burnaby. The Ridge Meadows pee wee A4s won their threeteam pool, then downed Kamloops 7-2 in the semi-final. They lost in the final, though, 4-3 to Langley. In the Bantam tournament, the Ridge Meadows A2s finished third in their division, and Terrace beat Comox 2-1 in the final. The Ridge Meadows bantam A3s won their threeteam pool, but lost in the semi-finals 6-2 to Nanaimo. Cowichan beat Nanaimo 5-4 to win the division. In the midget tournament, the Ridge Meadows A2s finished third in their pool, and Calgary beat Wenatchee 4-2 in the final. The Ridge Meadows midget A3s finished last in their three-team pool, and their tourney was won by Saanich, 5-2 over Nanaimo. And the Ridge Meadows midget A4s finished third after pool play in a five-team tournament. Cowichan defeated Burnaby 5-2 in the final.
Churchill game not Pitt’s finest hour by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
With two wins and two losses, the Pitt Meadows Marauders wound up finishing 15th at the B.C. Boys Triple A High School Basketball Championship. On Saturday night, the Walnut Grove Gators beat the White Rock Christian Academy Warriors 59-53 in the provincial championship game. In the bronze game, the St. George’s Saints beat the Kitsilano Blue Demons 85-66. Saturday afternoon, the Marauders finished the tournament the way they started – with a loss to the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs, by a 68-63 score. The Bulldogs are a tough team, and also beat Pitt 67-64 to open the
tournament. “It’s always great to be at the B.C.s, but we had a tough first draw,” said coach Rich Goulet. “We weren’t really mentally ready to play them, and we just got blown out on the boards. “But we’ve had a good year.” On Saturday, Pitt’s six-footeight post Jordan Rich led the scoring, with 16 points and eight rebounds. Sanj Toor scored 13, and Grade 10 Graham Smith had 10 points. Pitt posted wins against the Mount Baker Wild 75-19 and Burnaby Mountain Lions 67-47. Goulet said injuries during the playoffs hurt Pitt’s rankings coming out of the Fraser Valley Tournament, and gave them a brutal draw for the provincials – if they had managed to beat the Bulldogs, they would have faced the
champion Gators in their second game. The Marauders will return six Grade 11 players who saw significant playing time during this season, and they will be complemented by a group of juniors coming off a provincial silver medal this season. The leader of that group is Smith, who will take over the inside game. Pitt will have a lot of competition, as teams like the Sardis Falcons return numerous players, and the Terry Fox Ravens played four Grade 10s this year. “It’s always tough in the Fraser Valley,” said Goulet. Next year teams will compete in a new quadruple A division, created from the ranks of the 110 schools who presently compete at the triple A level. See Hoops, p42

BMX season at the starting line A new season of BMX racing is at the starting gate, and the local club is inviting newcomers. Ridge Meadows BMX is not only fun for the boys and girls who ride, but also for a lot of the parents and other adults who participate in and support the sport. BMX racing is one of the most entertaining individual sports, as evidenced by its recent addition as an Olympic event. Up to eight riders at a time will line up at the start hill. When the gate drops they try to beat their competition around a dirt track approximately 400-metre-long with three paved corners and numerous hills and obstacles in their way. Riders will compete in at least three races per race night, with their placing in each race contributing to their overall placing for the night. Riders range in age from as young as two to over 70. There are riders still on training wheels being chased around by their parents, all the way to national class riders with Olympic aspirations. Riders are grouped by age and ability, making getting started in the sport less intimidating than many sports.

Wyatt Durocher played tackle, and at over 300 pounds is the biggest kid on the Knights’ roster. Boyce will coach a team comprised of the top players from Coquitlam, Langley, Nanaimo, Victoria, North Surrey and Ridge Meadows. They will play a team made up of players from the other rosters of midget teams around the Valley Community Football League and Vancouver Mainland Football League. Boyce said the game is played hard, but there are no chop blocks, limited blitzes and other rules for the occassion. “It’s a big game, and all the kids will get to play – they’re there to be showcased.” Boyce will get his team on team on the field on April 7 to begin training for the game. “I can’t wait – I’m excited to get this going,” he said.

Nine players and the head coach from the Ridge Meadows Knights midget team will be participating in the Star Bowl event this spring, to showcase talent for scouts from university and junior football programs. Jeff Boyce, who has coached in the local association for 11 years, stepped up to midget for the first time last season, “We just had a really good season, and kind of caught the whole province by surprise,” said Boyce. The Knights finished the season tied for first place, with a record of 8-2, then lost in the provincial semi-final. On April 20, nine players will take part in the league’s all-star spectacle in Abbotsford. Brett Boyce, the coach’s son, is a running back/linebacker who makes an impact on both sides of the ball. Jainal Gill is a big-play wide receiver who piles up yards and scores.
Spencer Hambley is a big, strong and athletic tight end. Brock Loewen is a defensive lineman who is big and strong enough to play on both sides of the ball, but also mobile enough to fill in at linebacker. Elijah Goerzen is a defensive end who uses his big height to knock down passes and a big heart to keep pressure on the quarterback. Daniel Orydzuk is another wideout with great hands and a high football IQ. Zac Chamberland is a lineman who blasts through tacklers, who has already been recruited by universities. Joe Schuster was a receiver, but after the Knights lost their quarterback early in the year he finished the year at the pivot position. At the Star Bowl he will play slot receiver, where his quickness, toughness and sticky hands are his best assets.

INTERIOR TO LOWER MAINLAND TRANSMISSION PROJECT
• Vegetation and tree clearing along the right-of-way • Tower foundation installations • Tower assembly
The ILM project will expand the capacity of the transmission system that brings power from generation sources in the North and Southern Interior so that BC Hydro can continue to deliver clean and reliable energy to homes and businesses in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. The new 247 kilometre 500 kilovolt transmission line will parallel an existing 500 kilovolt transmission line between the Nicola Substation near Merritt and the Meridian Substation on Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam. The planned in-service date for the transmission line is 2015.

for post-season play and a provincial tournament. Although Pitt’s school population would allow the team to play on the triple A circuit, Goulet has made the commitment to play at the new level for two seasons. “There may be a day when we have to go triple A,” said Goulet. “It will still be good ball – the top of it will be very good.” Pitt has been to the provincials in nine of the past 10 seasons, and has one championship “I’m hoping we can keep it up.” The Pitt Meadows delegations was impressed with the Langley Events Centre as a new venue for the tournament. “It’s pretty luxurious – there’s no other facility in the province that matches it,” he said. He said players and coaches appreciated the change rooms, banquet hall and courts, while parents and fans enjoyed easy access, free parking and reasonably priced concessions. Goulet said even the attitudes are good: “The LEC people clearly want this event.” In fact, the Langley Events Centre is making a strong bid to become the location for all high school basketball provincials in B.C. next season.

She is survived by her son Jonathan (Sandy), son Jeffrey, grandchildren Brian and Emily, mother Evelyn, sisters Lynda (Mike), Janis (Ross), Kim (Amin), brother Mike (Annie) nieces and nephews. Many thanks go out to the wonderful staff at McKenney Creek Hospice for their caring and continued support during her two stays with them. We would also like to thank the dedicated staff at the St Paul’s Cochlear Implant Program who provided Wendy access to hearing for the last 1 ½ years of her young life after she lost her hearing due to a side effect of a medication in the late summer of 2009. JASON EXNER
I highly recommend Shayne and all the staff at Laminate Warehouse. The price point, quality & their knowledge of the product is second to none. Being a bit of a DIY guy, I've installed a few different types of laminate flooring over the years and their QUICK LOCK system is so easy to install even my 6 year old was helping out! I've referred Laminate Warehouse to family members & clients and have only heard positive feedback. My Mom just had some carpet replaced and she was extremely happy with the service and quality...we would strongly recommend LAMINATE WAREHOUSE to anyone considering new flooring!........... Cheers...Jason Exner, MacDonald Realty
