The Zanotto family of North Burnaby, including Tina, Franco, and their three children Moreno, Giuliana and Tatiana, could become the subject of a new reality show if the pilot produced by a local company is picked up for a full series.

A Vancouver studio’s first foray into TV could soon be a reality show about a North Burnaby family if its pilot gets picked up. Life Studios Inc. has previously focused on commercial work and weddings but was looking into a new venture for television when they were approached by a friend with an interesting family that could fit the bill for a reality show, said producer
Jacob Wasef. He was convinced after meeting the Zanotto family and determining theirs was a story “worth telling.” The show will be called La Famiglia. Wasef cited the family members’ diverse personalities as one of their selling points. For instance, he noted, 25-yearold son Moreno is an “extreme environmentalist” who refuses to drive a car, while eldest child Giuliana, 27, drives an H1 Hummer. The father, Franco, drives his own Hummer, runs a successful commercial painting business and

has a black belt in karate. Mom Tina Zanotto has made NewsLeader headlines in the past for writing and performing the Italian version of Celine Dion’s hit My Heart Will Go On during the height of the Titanic movie craze. She’s now focusing her show business efforts on youngest child Tatiana, 16, an aspiring pop star who hopes to follow in her mom’s footsteps. “The amazing thing that kind of got our attention was how no matter what, they always have breakfast together and they always have dinner
together, every single day,” Wasef said, adding the kids are “filled with pride to live at home.” He said the company wasn’t sure at first that they wanted their first TV project to be a reality show, simply because most of the shows they see showcase “weird” and “eccentric” families. “Whereas the Zanottos, they are normal, but yet they’re extremely interesting and entertaining to watch and see what they actually go through day in and day out,” said Wasef. Burnaby school district is considering offering a new program for advanced students that’s so new it’s only being piloted at one Canadian school. Ironically, the move comes while the district is reviewing the feasibility of bringing the International Baccalaureate (IB) program back to Burnaby. It was during that process the school board’s education committee learned of the Advanced Placement Cambridge Capstone and Credential Program currently only being offered in one school in Canada, in Edmonton, and 18 schools worldwide. The two-year program promotes a “critical questioning approach to information and develops disciplined and scholarly research skills,” according to minutes of the committee’s meeting last week. The committee directed district staff to start the process of trying to get Burnaby district selected as one of the sites for the larger rollout of the program in September 2014. BTA backs NDP The Burnaby Teachers’ Association (BTA) is endorsing Burnaby’s four New Democrat candidates in the May 14 provincial election. BTA delegates passed a motion to endorse incumbents Kathy Corrigan (Burnaby-Deer Lake) and Raj Chouhan (Burnaby-Edmonds) and first-time candidates Janet Routledge (Burnaby North) and Jane Shin (BurnabyLougheed). The endorsement was based on factors including legislature records and responses to a BTA survey on policy positions, it said in a press release. The BTA says it tried to contact candidates from all the major parties but only those from the Green Party and NDP responded to the survey. “The NDP responses were deemed most favourable to improved conditions for students (smaller class sizes) and a fair bargaining process,” the release said. BTA president James Sanyshyn said the endorsement is “a message to both our members and the public at large, informing them the platform of the BC NDP aligns most with what teachers feel are the most important issues in education.” According to BTA policy, it does not contribute financially to any political party, Sanyshyn noted.

Christophe Bonzon’s chocolate factory is being a little temperamental. It’s from France. That’s meant some very early morning phone calls to the manufacturer to troubleshoot, work out the hiccups. It’s a good thing there’s caffeine in chocolate. After two years as the pastry chef at CinCin, one of Vancouver’s top restaurants, Bonzon has struck out on his own. He chose his landing spot in North Burnaby, opening Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie at 4712 Hastings St. just last week. It is, says Bonzon, the fulfillment of a five-year dream to create his dark sculpted confections on his own terms. And sculpture is exactly how to describe the tray of bevelled and fractured chocolate eggs, adorned with paper-thin wedges and shelves Bonzon and his wife Jessica are currently preparing for Easter. These aren’t your foil-wrapped Cadbury cream eggs. Bonzon, who grew up in a small village outside Lausanne, Switzerland, first started making chocolate truffles with his mother when he was eight years old. He loved the creativity of adding flavours, the smiles of friends who received them as gifts. After training at l’Ecole du Grand Chocolat in Lyon, France, and the Chocolate Academy in Zurich, Bonzon served a three-year apprenticeship in Switzerland then worked in Perth, Australia before

settling in Vancouver. When he first arrived, it was difficult to find even a macaron. But interest in artisan chocolate and fine pastries has exploded in the past few years thanks to the pioneering efforts of master chocolatiers like Daniel Poncelet,Thomas Haas and AnneGenevieve Poitras. Bonzon is banking on that love stretching east to the suburbs. “People want something like this, but they don’t always want to go into Vancouver,” says Bonzon, 30.
“They are becoming better educated about chocolate.” Though he grew up with the creamy richness of Swiss chocolate, he sources all his chocolate from France. Each piece, from a simple round cinnamon and hazelnut truffle to the elaborate sculptures he builds for special holidays, are crafted by hand, using natural ingredients and no preservatives. As long as his melter is acting up, that means starting to create the day’s treats at 4:45 in the morning. The results, such as a pistachio
ganache, a passion fruit and coconut dollop, shimmer like little brown jewels in the shop’s glass display case. Which, he says, is exactly the effect he’s hoping to achieve. “The greatest pleasure you get is when you create something and see the satisfaction in other people,” says Bonzon. “Chocolate is an indulgence, a way to enjoy a small treat.” For more information about Chez Christophe, go to www.christophechocolat.com
NDP makes last-ditch attempt to overturn redistribution decision Local federal New Democrats made one last attempt at overturning a decision to merge North Burnaby and North Vancouver into a new riding. In January, the Electoral Boundaries Commission of B.C. decided to create a North Burnaby-Seymour riding despite earlier public hearings at which most speakers opposed the change. It’s part of a redistribution of population among federal electoral districts that takes place every 10 years.
Earlier this month, Burnaby-New Westminster NDP MP Peter Julian and Kennedy Stewart, NDP MP for Burnaby-Douglas, both spoke to a parliamentary committee asking it to recommend a reversal of the decision. The commission will make its final decision in June. Stewart, who would have lost the 2011 election if the proposed new riding had been in place then, has said in previous interviews that North

Burnaby and North Vancouver have little in common and being separated by Burrard Inlet could make it a challenge to properly represent constituents in both cities. During this redistribution, British Columbia will receive six additional seats bringing its total to 42. The changes include Burnaby getting two additional ridings, Burnaby South and New Westminster-Burnaby.

placement earned through the program to be recognized at those institutions. “For universities to come on board so quickly, even at the pilot stage, speaks to the program and speaks to Cambridge, I think,” Narang said. However, “We don’t even know if we would get it,” she stressed of the Capstone program. “It’s not a done deal … The board has given permission to move in this direction.” As for IB, it’s a challenging educational program that includes extra-curricular activities and community service. Founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968, it was previously offered as a district program at Burnaby South secondary from 1982 to 2003 but was discontinued due to low enrolment. Since dropping IB, the district’s AP program has grown into one of the largest in B.C. The district decided to look into the feasibility of bringing IB back in response to criticism during the 2011 civic election that it was not being offered. The community consultation last year resulted in 423 responses with most responding families supportive of the IB program. The most common reasons included a belief that it would “provide increased university entrance opportunities, increased academic challenge and international recognition for students,” the committee minutes said. “Even if we said yes to IB today we’re looking at a three-year turnaround period for it to come into being,” Narang said, noting that the Please note the date in the article regarding the 40th Anniversary program’s infrastructure of the Community Centre College for the Retired would have to be in the March 13th issue of As We Age was incorrect. recreated. “We haven’t lost IB because if this The correct date of the Open House is doesn’t play out … IB April 5th 10am-3pm is a longterm kind of The NewsLeader apologizes program to bring to the for any inconvenience this may have caused. community in Burnaby.”
Board chair Baljinder Narang stressed in an interview that nothing has been decided yet and that IB is still a possibility. However, there are advantages to the new program, which would be in addition to and not instead of the popular Advanced Placement (AP) program. “It seems a natural fit to what we have already,” Narang said. “We have a very successful AP program and this is an extension of that.” She said the new program is “very comparable to IB” and has the advantage of teaching being done in a similar manner to that found at the university level, serving as a “good transition” for students headed to university. Narang said she has a personal bias in favour of IB as her two children completed some or all of the program. But considering the existing strong AP program, the new Capstone program could make sense since it’s developed by the same College Board that created AP together with the University of Cambridge International Examinations. Initial reports from the pilot school in Edmonton have been encouraging, she said. It’s not as established as IB, but already many universities, including the University of British Columbia, have given their approval for credits and advanced

Construction traffic rerouted Wanda Chow
wchow@burnabynewsleader.com
Heavy trucks going to and from a construction site at Forest Lawn Memorial Park will have to use its northeast entrance on Royal Oak, says Burnaby city hall. Area residents raised concerns about safety and noise at last week’s council meeting after learning that the inconvenience they experienced last year, during Phase 1 of the project to build more burial plots at the cemetery, was set to be repeated this summer. With the trucks using the pedestrian-oriented Moscrop Street in 2012, area residents complained resulting in some truck drivers being ticketed and city hall requiring all truck traffic to use the northeast entrance, on Royal Oak near Canada Way. This time around, Forest Lawn hired traffic consultants to find a solution and they proposed that for Phase 2 trucks would enter at the entrance in the middle of that stretch of Royal Oak Avenue, and only exit at Moscrop. The truck traffic is expected to continue for up to 90 days, six days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and all the construction work is taking place on the northwest
corner of the site. The proposal didn’t win over residents and a delegation packed the council chambers to express their opposition. Barry Davis, Burnaby’s acting director of engineering, said in an interview that even before the last council meeting city staff were still working with Forest Lawn and their traffic consultants on a better solution. The result is all construction traffic will be required to use only the cemetery’s main entrance on Royal Oak, near Canada Way, which is the designated truck route. Davis said the northern end of the cemetery site already has issues with traffic congestion and trucks using the northeast entrance would add costs to the project, including additional traffic flagpersons. While the city generally tries to strike a balance between the needs of businesses and residents, it was clear after the delegation that it “wasn’t in anyone’s best interests to go that way,” he said. “[Forest Lawn] will deal with the issues onsite and they will have to manage the traffic in and out on the city side appropriately which means they may have to invest more in some onsite work so that they can manoeuvre more
easily and they’ll have to provide traffic control as well.” The reluctance to use the northeast entrance was due to the fact it’s very close to several of the cemetery’s onsite roads, its administration offices and public and staff parking. Davis noted that any traffic backups on site created the potential for traffic backing up onto Canada Way, something the traffic consultants were trying to mitigate. But with the new agreement in place, Forest Lawn is “going to have to put more traffic control in place so that they manage the funerals and the traffic coming onto site better,” he said. “It’s very welcome news indeed,” said area resident Ron Thompson who spoke to council on behalf of his neighbours. “We’re relieved we’ll have our neighbourhood back this summer.” Thompson gave kudos to Mayor Derek Corrigan, council and city staff for responding to their concerns so quickly, and to Forest Lawn for agreeing to the new plan. Nevertheless, he said, “we will remain vigilant” to ensure the plan is followed and he’s hopeful that the plan will set a precedent for future phases of the cemetery project.

NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
NDP must step up
LAST WEEK:
If BC NDP leaders hope to capitalize on the BC Liberals’ missteps, they need to step up their game and prove to voters there are good reasons to vote for their party. Pundits and pollsters might, indeed, be right that a backlash against Liberals’ mismanagement of their current mandate will result in a win for the NDP. But it should be realized that voters are in the throes of a crisis of confidence with the political process itself. They have not simply lost faith in the BC Liberals – they have lost faith in politicians of all stripes. In the political game, the NDP’s release of leaked memos concerning Liberal tactics in wooing ethnic voters was a bona fide win. But the NDP’s reluctance – to this date – to follow up such gains by presenting a detailed platform of its own is more than a little troubling, particularly when the BC Conservatives seem to be firing off platform statements every other day. The NDP must stand for something, not just against something. Presenting a convincing vision is what it will take for NDP leader Adrian Dix to ultimately put to rest a horrible past blunder in which he falsified the date of a memo to provide an alibi for former premier Glen Clark, who was feeling the heat in a probe into alleged corruption. Dix has apologized and acknowledged he “owns” his past mistakes. He may have learned some hard lessons about honesty since he was Clark’s chief of staff. And his refusal to fight “dirty” in a mud-slinging battle with his political foes may reflect a genuine desire to focus on issues. If that’s the case, the time is more than nigh to present these issues in a cohesive campaign, rather than a series of statements by Dix and NDP critics hewing to a general philosophy. —Black Press

THIS WEEK: Do you think Adrian Dix will be the next Premier of British Columbia? Vote at www.burnabynewsleader.com
Both parties have betrayed us VICTORIA – There was some public business conducted in the final frantic days of the B.C. legislature session last week, but you likely wouldn’t have heard much about it. Premier Christy Clark’s skimpy governing agenda was overshadowed by the delivery of an internal investigation report into her government’s ethnic outreach program. A review by four deputy ministers detailed what reporters already knew from a memo and meeting notes leaked to the NDP. The plan started in the premier’s office, led by Clark’s deputy chief of staff, who resigned as soon as it was made public. A B.C. Liberal Party employee attended the first meeting, expressly intended to organize events to impress immigrant communities, then harvest the goodwill in the form of contact lists for the coming election campaign. After 10,000 e-mails were collected and 27 interviews conducted, they revealed a few significant details. Former multiculturalism
Tom Fletcher tfletcher@blackpress.ca
minister John Yap knew or should have known that the scheme was being kept secret because it was an inappropriate use of government resources. He won’t be back in cabinet, although Clark said he intends to run for re-election in RichmondSteveston. Yap’s executive assistant resigned when the report came out, admitting he helped cover the tracks of political meddling in the hiring of three outreach contractors with sufficient loyalty to the party. Clark insists she knew nothing of this plan. She tabled the investigation report, and then announced that the B.C. Liberal Party had written a $70,000 cheque to the government to cover the estimated cost of the inappropriate political work done by non-political staff.

Here’s the part taxpayers may not fully appreciate. There are authorized political staffers all over the legislature, in the premier’s office, the opposition leader’s office and two teams of caucus employees who spend much of their time digging up dirt on the other party. All are paid by you and me. A line is crossed only when a non-political employee such as a ministry communications director acts on behalf of the party. The main offender in that capacity was one Brian Bonney, whose records suggested he spent half of his time on party work. He quit in February, before the plan was leaked, and the party paid back half of his salary for the 18 months he was on the public payroll. NDP outrage over this was blunted by another leaked document. This one was from a never-released 2010 report by Auditor General John Doyle, which condemned a five-year program of skimming money from NDP constituency office budgets all over the province and using it for political work.

In a nice bit of symmetry, much of the more than $400,000 was spent to put three-time candidate Gabriel Yiu on the NDP caucus payroll. Yiu’s Vancouver-Fraserview candidate page boasts of his ethnic outreach work, which included tirelessly warning B.C.’s Chinese community about the evils of the harmonized sales tax. In fact, it was the NDP-Yiu operation that inspired a B.C. Liberal copycat plan. The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing. It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. This is the B.C. LiberalNDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light. Both of these schemes have the same stink. There is no moral high ground for either of them.

COMMENT
Air school concerns in public Re: New school sparks complaints (NewsLeader, March 15) I live a block from Burnaby Central and often speak with students in the neighbourhood about their school (My own kids graduated from Central). I was told that their letter and list of concerns was addressed to Roberto Bombelli, past principal and now assistant superindent of the Burnaby School District. What the kids were asking for was that their ex-principal “advocate” for them. The specific request was that he place their list of grievances on the school board agenda, and give it a public airing. I hope that does happen. It’s great to see our teens outspoken and organized. Given what that new complex cost us, let’s make sure that our kids don’t have to keep maintenance logs on their own school. Ron Jack Burnaby
COMMON SENSE SHOULD PREVAIL I went to pick up my wife in front of a Save On Foods. When I got there, two garbage trucks were obstructing the street where my wife was waiting. Because of that, I stopped just before those trucks in front of a no-stopping sign for about 20 seconds for my wife to walk five metres to the car. Unfortunately, a police officer gave us a $65 ticket. My wife explained that I stopped where I did so that she could get in the car. The officer, with a less-than-polite answer indicated an alternative place where I could have stopped, about 3/4 of a block away. My wife explained the problems she has with her leg and the difficulties she has walking, but the officer continued writing the ticket. I’m not saying it is OK to disobey street signs. But there are times when better judgment and common sense should prevail. This incident made me
realize just how sad and robotic some of us have become. Frank Di Cesare Burnaby
CITY NEEDS TO PROVIDE SPACE Re: Council nixes daycare for Value Village redevelopment (NewsLeader, March 15) I’m disappointed Burnaby city council is refusing to fund a childcare facility at the Value Village location in Edmonds. As city staff noted, the community has a strong need for additional childcare facilities, and the argument that we should consult the community to determine priorities falls flat. Childcare is a critical issue of affordability and equality in our province, which is why Burnaby has already registered support for the idea of $10 a day childcare. While childcare is a provincial responsibility, cheap childcare will not happen if there are no facilities to create spaces in. Trevor Ritchie, Burnaby

Starting a kitchen reno
There are many things to think about before you start renovating one of the most important rooms in the house.
By Maggie Calloway Making the decision to renovate your kitchen is one of the most exciting and scary decisions you can make. A kitchen is more than just another room; in many ways it’s the very heart of the home and you need to get it right. Hundreds of decisions will have to be made, each one dependent on the next. No wonder it is so daunting.

Hiring a RenoMark renovator By Kerry Vital Renovations make up a huge part of the residential construction industry, and billions are spent every year by Canadian homeowners looking to improve upon their homes. But how can you make sure that you’re hiring a reputable person to renovate your home? The RenoMark program, developed by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, gives homeowners the ability to find a reliable, professional renovator easily. “The RenoMark designation assures consumers that the renovator they are dealing with has completed industryleading education requirements and are part of a professional network apprised of the latest technologies and designs, says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “As well, all RenoMark holders have committed themselves to a code of business ethics and offer warranties on the work they do, offering peace of mind to home-owners that RenoMark professionals stand behind the work they do. A RenoMark renovator must abide by several rules, including being a member in good standing of the GVHBA, provide a detailed written contract for all

“This year’s Georgie Awards winners showcase the culture of imagination and ingenuity that only grows stronger throughout our province each year, says CHBA BC President Nathan Stone. “From Vancouver Island to Whistler, from the Okanagan to the Interior, the winners and the finalists continue to show us that B.C. is a true leader when it comes to excellence in the residential construction industry. Among the big winners at the awards was My House Design/Build Team, who left with five awards, including Best Residential Renovation $500,000 to $799,999, Best Renovation – Any Room and Best Interior Design Custom Residence – New or Renovation.
“It’s an honour (to win), not only for us and our clients, but for all home builders, as we are now recognized as creating some of the finest homes and projects in all of North America, says My House President and Managing Director Graeme Huguet. “This has truly been a blessed year for us. Stone agrees, saying, “My House Design/ Build Team’s Waterfront Hideaway is a fantastic example of how homes can be innovative, sustainable and completely unique, while setting the bar higher for our province’s home building and renovation community.

While it may be tempting to hire someone under the table, this can have huge repercussions if something goes wrong, whether that’s someone getting hurt or a job not being completed on time. Hiring a renovator with the RenoMark designation means that you don’t have to worry about some of the typical stresses that come with renovating your home. You can also be assured that your renovator is up-to-date with all the latest trends, materials and regulations, which protects both you and the renovator. An added bonus of having a professional renovator with the RenoMark certification is that it can increase your resale value down the road. Having a professionally done job means that the work will stand the test of time and will look great. Research done by RE/MAX shows that the top projects undertaken by homeowners every year include kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, replacing windows or doors, replacing or upgrading the roof and adding a fireplace. Even if you don’t plan to sell your home, being able to enjoy your new renovation without having to worry about corners being cut and regulations being ignored is well worth it. The RenoMark Renovator’s Guide lays out a list of steps that homeowners need to take before beginning a renovation. The first is to carefully plan your project, including researching what is required, from permits to the trades involved. You also need to consider whether you need to move out of your home during the process, and how long the renovation will take. The second step is to hire your renovator, and ask about his or her experience with projects that are similar to the one you want. The third step the guide recommends is to get a written contract with the renovator in order to protect both

yourself and the renovator. It should lay out the cost, materials, time, scope of the work and any instructions you have for the people working on the house. For example, if you require everything to be cleaned up by the end of each day, or want a specific room to be protected during construction, make sure it is in writing. The fourth step is to check on the progress during your renovation. It is very important to keep in regular contact with the people working on your house. This leads into the fifth recommendation, discuss your project. If you notice something that you want changed or you have any questions, don’t hesitate to talk to your renovator and make sure you’re both on the same page. Finding a use for those reclaimed pieces By Maggie Calloway An interior design style which has great appeal is mixing modern, with sometimes very stark lines, with pieces made of reclaimed wood and even old machinery repurposed into functional furniture. The advantage of repurposing old boards and machinery is they are mostly one-of-a-kind and as such much more interesting. Craig Pearce, principal of Union Wood Supply Co., is passionate about aging objects of industrial origin and designing and building with reclaimed wood. In fact, he cheerfully admits he was born into the wrong era. After “making his bones” working with a rustic log cabin furniture maker, Pearce went on to furnish his home with his own designs then filled the demands from friends. It was a natural next step to form Union Wood Supply Co. “As far as finding architectural salvage goes I have spent many years doing this as a hobby. I have travelled all over North America and made many great contacts,” he says. “I still travel a lot because salvagers usually specialize in one or two things and I want as much variety as possible so I still need to hit the road. We go to cities we know has some good old industrial history and start checking it out.” Even talking about the “hunt” as he calls it, you can hear his excitement. “We just got back from Oakland, California and bought a couple of pieces from an antique dealer. When we got talking he said if we wanted to look at some industrial pieces we should meet him at an isolated warehouse,” Pearce says. “This is how we find some great
pieces that are not always on display; we recognize each other.” Old-growth wood is found in demolition sites, salvage yards and abandoned buildings. Other prizes such as barn doors, lighting and old bricks are carefully removed and transported back to the shop to sometimes become part of a new project and sold. These pieces are unique and often tell a story of a time and place no longer part of our more fast-paced life. They are often pieces made with pride to last more than a lifetime. Working out of what was once a mechanic’s garage, clients at Union Wood Supply can browse the showroom and even the workshop to get inspired. And if what you are looking for isn’t there, just wait and magic may happen.

Skylights great for more than just letting light pour in By Maggie Calloway If there is one thing which will make a huge difference in both how you live in a space and, even more importantly, how the family feels about the space they live in, it has got to be the installation of skylights. We live in a climate with many months of grey rainy days. This is one of the prices we pay for the lush scenery, but if we live in a home with a dark interior the other price we could pay is the effect that has on our mood. One of the worries of homeowners considering installing skylights is the fear of leakage. Technology has advanced a long way and Velux, a major manufacturer and installer of skylights and a leader in developing the No Leak Skylight, recognizes those fears and has addressed them. Mark Taylor of Velux explains that the company is very aware of the homeowner’s trepidation. “The No Leak Skylight addresses those concerns and so sure are we of our product we offer excellent warranties,” he says. “You are right about the need for light in our climate and the most efficient way of introducing natural light into the home
is by skylights. ... There are other benefits as well such as energy savings because there is reduced need for artificial light and the passive solar heat gain in the winter months. In the summer months skylights help immensely with ventilation.” One of the most efficient ways of ventilating the home is through the roof which has to do with inside pressure; heat rises and can easily exhaust through an open skylight. “We can, by installing skylights, ventilate the home, facilitate more natural light penetrating the home and create a more healthy living environment,” Taylor says. The Velux website has a fascinating simulation, called the Daylight Visualizer, which shows how light from variously positioned skylights will travel though a room. It’s a great tool to help you make a decision on the placement depending on the proposed use of the room.

Staying in your home through your golden years By Kerry Vital As the baby boomer generation ages, it has become more and more important recently to ensure that you are comfortable and safe in your own home. Sometimes that entails moving to a smaller home or living with a relative, but that’s not always the best option for some. When you’ve lived in a home for decades and perhaps even raised a family there, your emotional attachment to your home can outweigh the other considerations as you age. Luckily, there are several renovations that can be done to a home that will allow you to stay in your home through your golden years. “People are used to being independent,” says Gordon Wilson of G. Wilson Construction Co. “They still want that freedom.” Widening doorways, above, and installing a walk-in or rollOne of the things that people request when in shower, bottom right, are two popular renovations when renovating their home is a walk-in or roll-in homeowners decide they want to stay in their home for the long shower. So you are all excited about your impending renovation. You have met with your architect, chosen a contractor and are all ready to begin … or are you? One professional who should be part of the team from the beginning is a lighting professional, which is not to be confused with an electrician. This oftenforgotten professional is key to how you will live in your renovated home and, even more importantly, how you will feel in the space going forward. Greg Chambers of Light The Store couldn’t agree more. “I advise clients to do some homework, go through publications, magazines and the like and see how everything fits together. When they get a sense of what they want and what feeling they want to create in the space, consult with a lighting designer,” he says. “The one thing which changes a space the most is lighting and some people are very much affected by lighting so it is very critical to the success of the project.” Delores Ginthner of the University of Minnesota has done research into the effect of lighting on how we feel and how we use space. “Thinking about the layers of light and how light affects the users of a space on both a psychological and behavioural level will present you with a mental lighting design concept when someone asks how you light a certain space,” she says. “Lighting is a key factor in helping the space meet the intent of its owner and the needs of its users. Keep that in mind, and remember that often incorporating a lighting designer into the design team could be quite beneficial to the outcome.” “It is a huge advantage when clients bring their plans or drawings into our showroom because we can review the lighting specifications and show how it will look in the space. This is the point where changes can be made if the client does not feel comfortable with the degree of light, the intensity, etc.,” Chambers says. “We have the ability to put the client into the atmosphere which is hard to imagine

just looking at drawings. It is much easier to change drawings than change lighting when the renovation is complete. Lighting is the hardest element to figure out because it is so individual. We can demonstrate how say a halogen, a fluorescent or an LED is going to look, function and feel.” We are beginning to see how important it is to get lighting right. How frustrating it would be to finish a renovation which looks fantastic but then realize there is nowhere for a big reader to snuggle down with a good book or a home chef to enjoy working in the kitchen. Renovations are stressful enough and to end with a disappointment would be horrific. Take the time to seek out the right professionals; you’ll be glad you did.

Do your research before starting a renovation “ from page.1 9 Once you decide the time is right to go ahead with a new kitchen, the first step is to do your homework then hire a contractor who can make your dream come true. Klondike Contracting founder Eric Schapira understands how important this room in particular is to a family and he has some advice to give as you begin the process. “The first thing is to determine what the budget is and what it is you want to achieve. Some people are concerned about resale value and don’t want to overspend for the area so I advise speaking to a realtor who is familiar with the neighbourhood,” he says. “The other point to consider when setting a budget is how long are you planning on living in the house? If you plan on staying in the house for over five years I tell clients to renovate for their own enjoyment and don’t worry about resale. If you are planning on moving within five years know you will be hard-pressed to get your money back. It is very important to know the reason you are renovating and what the budget is.” Schapira advises people to really know what it is they want to achieve out of the renovation in terms of how it looks and the functionality. Look through magazines, watch TV shows or go online to figure out what aesthetic you are looking to achieve as well as understand the function of the kitchen. Is it a place the family congregates on a regular basis, do you like to entertain regularly or is it a quiet serene place where you just have breakfast? “Once these questions are answered you should be looking at hiring a
designer or a design/build firm that has the ability to help with the design, the plan, the specification package and the application for permits with the city,” Schapira says. “If you are not dealing with a design/ build firm then deal with a contracting firm that does full detailed budgeting so you have a firm price. Some people like a confirmed price, some like price plus. ... Some clients are more hands-on in the selection of materials, some like us to present what we feel would work on the particular project but we are happy either way.” If there is one room in the house that can go wildly out of control budget-wise it has to be the kitchen so hiring a full service contractor with professionals involved at each stage of the project makes perfect sense.
Eric Schapira of Klondike Contracting says the first step a homeowner should take before renovating a kitchen is to consider the budget. Submitted photos

South splits at B.C. AAA hoop tourney
The Burnaby South Rebels won their first and last games at the B.C. AAA high school senior boys basketball championship, but faltered in the two in between last week. After winning their opener last Wednesday, a big second-quarter scoring binge by the eventual champion Walnut Grove Gators swallowed up any title hopes the Rebels may have had Thursday. The Gators outscored the Rebels 26-8 in the second quarter to roll to a 93-51 victory in the quarterfinals at the Langley Events Centre Thursday evening. Ottawa increases tanker inspections By Tom Fletcher Black Press
With one crude oil pipeline to the West Coast undergoing environmental hearings and another waiting to apply, the federal government has announced stricter rules for foreign oil tanker inspections and more coastal flights looking for signs of oil spills. A new Canadian Coast Guard incident command system, improved hazard markers for shipping, increased surveillance flights and research into the hazards of heavy oil were announced in Vancouver Monday by federal Transport Minister Denis Lebel and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver. The government has also tabled new legislation it says will strengthen requirements for pollution prevention and response at oil facilities and introduce new offences and penalties related to pollution. Foreign tankers will have to be inspected annually, a rule now in place for Canadian vessels, to see if they are equipped with double hulls and other safety features. An expert panel was also announced to review current standards and recommend further rules. Lebel and Oliver described
the program as moving to a “worldclass tanker safety system,” the term used by B.C. Premier Christy Clark last year when she announced conditions for provincial acceptance of increased heavy oil shipments by pipeline and tanker. B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake said the announcement is a welcome step. “We’ll have to look at how it compares with other regimes, but from I see here, it goes a long way toward getting to what we understand to be a world-class system,” Lake said. “If we’re going to have this material moved through the province, the environment and the taxpayer have to be protected to the fullest extent.” B.C. hired an Alaska consulting firm in February to conduct B.C.’s own review of spill response. Lake said that step is needed with or without proposed oil pipelines, since there are daily crude shipments from Alaska, exports of Alberta heavy crude from Burnaby, and a general increase in shipping for Asia-Pacific trade. Fuels are shipped to locations all along the coast, and freighters and other ships all carry large amounts of bunker oil for their own fuel.
