John Appleby
awarded a Diamond Jubilee Medal
by Jennifer Smith If there is a superstar of superstars in the Powder Hounds Adaptive Ski Club at the moment, its John Appleby. Appleby got started working with disabled skiers in 2005 after taking his Level 1 Ski Instructor training. “I figured I would be a ski instructor after I retired, but there was this guy in the class who was going on to work in the disabled ski program. I thought it sounded interesting and I just followed him,” he said. Retiring to the Okanagan from the Coast, he spent a year with Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports in Vernon and then joined on with the Powder Hounds four years ago, logging mul-

On February 26, he was among a group of 75 outstanding British Columbians to receive the unique recognition. Bestowed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II as part of her Golden Jubilee celebration, commemorating 60 years on the throne, the medal has been given to 223 outstanding citizens of British Columbia by Premier Christy Clark; some 60,000 will be awarded nationwide. Appleby doesn’t know how the
medal made its way into his hands as whomever nominated him did so anonymously. Last year, he picked up an award from Sport BC and figures his name might have been forwarded on by the organiztion; but its genesis is likely to remain a mystery. He describes the work as more mentally demanding than simply skiing, but says the challenge of figuring out how to help different people with different abilities enjoy the hill is extremely rewarding. He’s completed his Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing certification through to a level where he can now teach people how to be volunteers.
From 40-pound clients to 200 pound clients, those with Downs syndrome, Austism, paralysis, those missing a limb or living with a head injury, there are very few limits, he said. The Powder Hounds love teaching people to ski. The group is hoping to develop its own clubhouse on the hill in short order and is actively looking for groups to partner with to make the goal happen. And if the quality of its members is any indication, the dream should come to fruition.

Powder Hounds PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED BY POWDER HOUNDS ADAPTIVE SKI CLUB
hone in on a new fundraising effort
This super team of star volunteers know how to make the ski hill an inclusive playground for everyone Next time you get off the chairlift and see a group queuing up at the top of slope with one member in a seated position, you’ll know you’re about to meet the Powder Hounds Adaptive Ski Club. While many a Big White skier has been known to give a shout out to the moon at the sight of fresh powder, only the Powder Hounds
by Jennifer Smith
break out the sit-ski, add extra skis on poles or pontoons to assist their members in ensuring everyone who wants to enjoy the hill can. “We kind of create a bubble around our skiers to protect them from the other skiers on the hill,” said Tony Lenarcic, program director. The group has a rotation of 45
volunteers. Some people, like an adult with Downs Syndrome who can already ski, might only need one guide, while others, like a child with Autism who has high behavioural demands, might take a crew to make a day or half-day of skiing. The volunteers can tether a person in a sit ski, guiding the 40-pound device with straps, or stage-coach it
down the hill, holding onto the back. “Once you get used to it, it’s quite easy,” said Lenarcic. And just as Big White is celebrating a big anniversary this year with 50 years of skiing under its belt, so too is one of the impressive group that makes it all possible. BigWhitemagazine disabled skiers programs, is 25 years old this year. Inspired by Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion tour in 1986, People in Motion groups formed across the country to promote accessibility and inclusion, according to Louise Abbott, executive director of the Kelowna and District Society for People In Motion. From loaning sports equipment to providing transportation, the organization has been on a mission ever since to ensure people with a wide range of disabilities participate fully in the Okanagan community. “Basically, how we describe ourselves, is we do promote inclusion and equality for all persons with disabilities,” she said. Initially, this meant offering wheelchair basketball and purchasing vans equipped to move people with a variety of disabilities as transportation was a huge issue for those with specific mobility needs in the valley. People in Motion celebrates 25th Anniversary Continued from page 7 lifts, started loaning the vans and 13 years ago, under the guidance of Jon Rescorla and Antony Hutton, the Powder Hounds was created, using one secondhand sit-ski. The group now has mono-ski and bi-ski options for disabled skiers, which can be operated with assistance or just a guide. It can be nippy for the disabled skiers, many of whom may have difficulty knowing when their feet are getting cold, so the volunteers do everything they can to make the ski day possible, even if it means taking regular rotations inside to heat up. Five years ago, Lenarcic formalized the training program, ensuring that everyone is certified through the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiiers and that the organization has insurance through Sport BC. The group also joined forces with Sue Thompson, then a resource

teacher with School District 23, expanding the program to schools. On Sunday March 3, as the group gathered for its annual Family Fun Day to introduce the club to the public and raise awareness of the challenges disabled persons within the community face, they launched the club’s very first ski-a-thon, raising $7,427. The top fundraising crew was Team Splitboardz of Big White Ski Resort, netting some $1300 for the cause; Jane Anjema brought in $640 as an individual. Participants could downhill ski, adaptive ski, snowboard, cross country ski or snowshoe, collecting pledges along the way. Lift tickets were 25 per cent off for the participants—Big White has always given the adaptive ski club members a ski pass for their efforts. supports. The target was $15,000, for a first-time event, and though they fell shy, the organizers were pleased. It is fitting that the adaptive ski program should bring in such a
sizeable sum for its volunteer force numbers 45 of the 80 volunteers who assist People in Motion. Information on the organization and program is at pimbc.ca

The Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory keeps track of these beautiful skies from its perch in Penticton, some 135 kilometres door-to-door from Big White, and Dr. Ken Tapping offers up weekly tips and discoveries on what’s happening up there from its website nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/education/astronomy. (Take the quiz on the site to learn more about constellations) But with the advent of smartphones, it's quite possible to choose from any number of stargazing applications and know exactly what one is looking at from the condo living room or deck with very little research. Look out the window this month and you will find The Great Bear, a constellation containing the Big Dipper or Ursa Major and the Little Dipper, Ursa Minor. Cassiopeia, to the left of the pair, is named for the vain queen Cassiopeia in Greek mythology and Cepheus, named after the King of Aethiopia in Greece, sits right above. Over to the left is Hercules, named for the Roman mythological hero who adapted from the Greek hero Heracles.

Ski2Sea Rises

Where will we be
on the very last day our mountain is officially open? At another race! A hallmark of the Kelowna sporting community, the Ski2Sea race was salvaged by a very generous donor this year after nearly having to fold. After 32 years of athletes competing in a relay or solo event from our slopes to Okanagan Lake, Ski2Sea appeared to be running on fumes only a few month ago. The title sponsor had to pull out and the race was definitely in jeopardy as race directors went to the media with a public plea for help. Thankfully, the call to arms worked, Ski2Sea announced Remax Kelowna would signed on for five years as the new title sponsor and
the last day tradition was saved. So, come April 14, the Big White community will be waiting in the wings to watch as the area’s top athletes—and a few brave souls prepared to compete with them— put on the board or the skis one last time. And the race directors could not be more thrilled. “With a platinum sponsor secured for a minimum of the next five years, participants and organizers can feel secure knowing the race will go on,” said Sue Keast Remax Ski2Sea president. The Ski2Sea is one of only two other similar races in the Pacific Northwest. The 95 kilometre, six
stage event sees teams of up to seven people and soloists compete in alpine skiing, nordic skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, running, and canoeing/kayaking. “The great thing about the Ski2Sea is you can have seven absolute hard core athletes and yet you are competing with mostly weekend warriors and recreationalists and no one is having an adverse effect on anyone else,” said Kelly Blair, a long time organizer. “It’s you and your teammates and the clock and you are challenging yourself.” Big White has provided more than just a spectacular starting point, committing staff and market-
ing resources to the race through its long-term partnership with Ski2Sea, something that has also allowed the race to continue. “We couldn’t afford to pay if we want to rent the lift and the resort for two hours so Big White has always been amazing for us,” said Blaier. "The support of the communiy is great. Remax stepped up and now we can continue to put on afood race and make donations back into the community.” Registration is now open for the Remax Ski2Sea through its website www.ski2sea.ca. The 33rd annual race is set to take place on Sunday, April 14.

Big White creative types convene
They just formed this year and are already ready for a show Art E’scape @Big White, the mountain’s new creative collective, showcases its member artists this month at the Big White Chalet. Previously known as the Schumann House, the Chalet will house pieces from painters and potters, textile and pen-and-ink artists, and photographers. The show includes everything from beginners’ work to pieces by well-established artists and will showcase pottery pieces from the group’s first workshop of 2013. Art E’scape @Big White is an organization founded to encourage and promote the creative arts within the Big White community. Most members return to Big White Ski Resort on a seasonal basis, but some attend only for one season, or just for the duration of their stay. Members include a retired chemistry teacher, a scientist, an accountant, a ski Instructor, a retired nurse and an events co-ordinator, just to name
a few. The exhibition will be held in the Big White Chalet in the Big White Village from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm on Saturday, March 16, and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17. Big White will be providing tea, coffee and light snacks. Art E’scape @Big White accepts members of all backgrounds and abilities, and offers frequent workshops and events for non-members. For information, email artescapebigwhite@hotmail.com

Tiny Tosh is one
superstar pint-sized rider
Seven-year-old Tosh Davis likes deep powder and time in the trees.
Just seven years old, Tosh Davis is gearing up to shred the Andes and already killing every run on our mountain by Jennifer Smith Tosh Davis has been riding since he was two years old—no really. Now a gnarly seven-year-old Grommet with a penchant for speed, his parents are already planning a trip to the Andes to let him ride Chile next year. Standing 130 centimetres tall, his powder board is exactly his height and provided for him by GNU or Lib Tech, the boards his parents, Krys and Jolene, tend to ride. “When we want to go steep and deep it gets him through,” said his dad, noting there's no other way in Tosh's mind.
Powder and trees are Tosh’s favourite, though one can find him in the park sometimes too riding a 115-centimetre board. He’s generally with either his mom or dad, but he’s been known to strap on the board with a few other pint-sized wonders. At five years old, he was already competing in the Green Horn Games in North Vancouver, a competition for those 13 years old and under and loving it. Tosh’s talent appears to be natural and he’s always game to practice, logging four or five days a week of Continued on page 22
Tosh Davis started riding at two years old and the "Little Ripper" was a master by four years old, as seen above.

He got his first board from Island Snow in Kelowna when he was two years old and rode with his parents and his babysitter, figuring the sport out as he went. “He’s not held back by any of the runs,” said Krys, who used to build snowboards in Vancouver. Krys and Jolene run a hot tub servicing business on the hill and

Tosh attends the Big White Community School where most of the other students his age are skiers. So for now, he’ll be riding with the adults, getting his picture snapped flying down the runs impressing guests as he ollies every nook, cranny and crevice, popping in and out of the snow ghosts as he goes.
