Border crossings that are often jammed with shoppers heading south may soon get even more congested as the U.S. government is forced to lay off thousands of border employees. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has begun cutting employee hours and is slated to furlough 5,000 more staff by early April after Congress and President Barack Obama failed to reach a comprehensive deal by March 1 to reduce federal spending, triggering automatic spending cuts. The initial cuts at Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are already resulting in reports of longer processing lines at some U.S. airports. CBP officials predict waits up to 50 per cent longer at major airports – four hours or longer at peak times – and a doubling of peak waits to five hours or more at the busiest land crossings. “Travellers should adjust their trip itineraries to account for unexpected delays,” the department warned in a Continued on A5

Problem properties can ‘change a neighbourhood’ Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Cleanup has been completed of a Gladys Avenue property that was among the city’s nuisance properties, but a dozen more are still on the list. A b b o t s f o r d Police Const. Ian MacDonald said there are about 12 residences that are considered problems by the police department, the City of Abbotsford, and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service. The three agencies work together to single out these properties and try to make changes. MacDonald said the homes can be pinpointed for a variety of reasons. In some cases, they are abandoned or derelict properties that have been taken over by squatters. Others have ongoing bylaw issues, such as fire code infractions, neglected yards, or piles of junk stored on site. Still others are the subject of numerous calls to police for issues such as stolen property, noise and drug trafficking. MacDonald said it often takes just one bad tenant to bring problems to an area and attract likeminded people. The bottom line is such homes can bring down a neighbourhood, he said. “If you have a problem residence on your street, it will affect your perception of safety … It can increase the likelihood of breakins or the feeling that you’re vulnerable.” The goal is to resolve issues at each location within three months, although dealing with

The vehicle owned by the car dealership was impounded for seven days. “I don’t think the test drive went as planned,” MacDonald said. He said police spoke with the dealership.

NewsBytes CAT BURGLAR PROWLING A cat burglar struck two homes in the Gladwin Road area south of Downes Road over the weekend. Const. Ian MacDonald said the homes were hit sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday, and police believe the same suspect was involved in both incidents. In both cases, the culprit got into the homes through an unlocked ground-floor window while the occupants were sleeping. A woman’s purse was stolen from one of the homes. The occupants of the other residence didn’t notice anything had been taken. The tenants discovered that someone had been in their homes after they awoke the next morning and saw that items had been moved around and the window was open. People should contact the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 if they notice suspicious activity or people in their neighbourhoods.

Meeting for Mission traditional school Abbotsford parents invited

Abbotsford parents are being invited to an information session in Mission on Monday, March 11 to discuss a proposed traditional school. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Fraserview Elementary, 32444 Seventh Ave. The proposed program will be open to students in kindergarten to Grade 4 and will be the first traditional school in

Mission. Pre-registration opens the following morning at 8:30 at the school board office. An enrolment of 75 children is needed, and kids from Abbotsford are invited. Abbotsford currently has three traditional schools – Abbotsford Traditional elementary, middle and secondary – but enrolment fills quickly.

Nicole Bradley is taking on the challenge to get healthy and raise money for a cause in which she believes. When the 22-year-old Abbotsford resident saw an ad on the Abbotsford News website for the Kin’s Green Fighter Challenge, it seemed the perfect opportunity to do both. The 13-week contest is now underway, encouraging competitors to adopt healthier lifestyles while raising money for cancer research. “I knew I wanted to donate some of my time and volunteer at the (Canadian) Cancer Society because I had turned 22 and my dad had lost his arm to cancer when he was 22.”

There are documented cases of both being unintended victims, especially dogs. Short of a full ban, the association is calling for changes to trapping laws, such as the requirement of warning signage, and tags or serial numbers on the traps, so the owner can be identified. It’s not uncommon for cities, including Abbotsford apparently, to call in trappers to get rid of nuisance beavers that are flooding roads and waterways. For modern civic governments to employ or condone this archaic method is simply not acceptable, especially when humane alternatives exist. Abbotsford city council recently, and courageously, passed a bylaw banning shark fin sales and products in this community. Once again, they should take a leadership role, pass the regulations the APFBA suggests, and ultimately, relegate body-gripping traps to the dark closet of history.

Have to go for the best deal Regarding the impact of cross-border shopping on local business, I agree that it is a problem. I am, in fact, part of the problem. I cross the line at least once a week for gas, milk, eggs, and cheese. The problem is, I save minimum $30/week filling up two vehicles. When we do a major grocery shop, we spend $160 in the States on what costs us $200 here. This is taking into account a $1.05 exchange rate. Over the course of a year, we save almost

$2,000 shopping across the line. The unfortunate reality is, we have to make our dollar go as far as possible. The government needs to realize that the tariffs placed on items coming into Canada make them unaffordable in Canada. The money they make in tariffs, they lose in local sales. I hope things change, but until they do I will continue to shop wherever I can get the best deal. I have to. A level playing field would change that.

The old order of competition and separation is crumbling. The environmental crisis is forcing us to redefine our needs, and enter into a new and truer understanding of the meaning and purpose of our lives. Why not more support for the Heat? Re: Poor attendance at Heat games I came down to the Lower Mainland this last weekend to visit family and attend the Vancouver Outdoor Show. Decided to take in the AHL game between the Heat and the Houston Aeros on Saturday night. I have heard a lot about the caliber of play in the AHL, but have never had the opportunity to see a game live. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Both teams displayed a great deal of talent and played hard. The AHL provides its fans with a very good brand of profes-

sional hockey. This was also my first visit to the Abbotsford sports complex, and once again I was not disappointed. There did not seem to be a bad seat in the arena and the staff, volunteer or paid, were more than courteous. This leads me to my question then – why isn’t there more support for this organization and these hockey players? I was truly shocked to see how poorly this game was attended. This is professional, very good hockey and I see no reason why they should not get better sup-

port than what they appear to be getting. If it wasn’t for the couple hundred Scouts that were there for a special occasion (game and overnight stay) the rink would have been embarrassingly empty. It would seem that this team would belong to not just Abbotsford, but the entire Fraser Valley. This arena should be filled. I know if I get the opportunity I will be back. Get out and support this team. It is well worth it, and no, I do not work for the Heat. Bill Haviland Merritt

Convicted robber sentenced again

A man who served a two-year prison sentence for robbing two banks in Abbotsford in 2010 has been sentenced for other offences in the city. Richard Wayne Heino, 23, pleaded guilty last week in Abbotsford provincial court to one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and another count for under $5,000. He received a total of 11 months in jail. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the charges relate to Heino being

caught in a stolen 2008 Jeep Wrangler in January, as well as the theft of several items, including a flat-screen TV. MacDonald said there were a number of vehicle break-ins that occurred in underground parking lots in the 32700 and 32800 block of George Ferguson Way in January. Heino is also before the courts for robbery, unlawful confinement and using an imitation firearm in West Vancouver on Oct. 28, 2012.

Heino held up two banks in Abbotsford in May 2010, and police released his photo and issued a public appeal to find him after he was viewed in surveillance video. He was arrested the following month in Chilliwack, and pleaded guilty in December of that year. Last May, he was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant after he allegedly took off from a halfway house in Kamloops.

Shed break-ins on the rise

Thieves after wire and metal Break-ins at homes and businesses in Abbotsford are down, but police are reporting that they are up considerably when it comes to sheds and outbuildings. Const. Ian MacDonald said residential break-ins have dropped 26 per cent, while businesses have recorded a 23 per cent reduction. But break-ins to outbuildings are up 52 per cent. Const. Ian MacDonald said the bulk of the increase is in the Sumas Prairie area, and it appears the thieves are mainly targeting wire and metal. In their search, they are also stealing items such as wakeboards, ATVs and tools. MacDonald said Sumas Prairie is likely being targeted because of its easy access to Highway 1 or because the culprit or culprits live nearby. Police are reminding residents to securely lock outbuildings on their properties.

The concepts of “custody” and “access” are being replaced with “parenting responsibilities” and “parenting time”. There is a philosophy of equality among parents in the legislation in how parenting responsibilities and parenting time is shared between the parents. Both parents will automatically be guardians of the child, and be entitled to both parenting responsibilities and parenting time, as long as both parents lived with the child before separation. Only a parent who has not lived with their child will not automatically be a guardian, but can become a guardian by agreement with the other guardian, or court order. The court must consider only the best interests of the child when making decisions affecting the children. Another change is that if you have not been living together for two years, so do not qualify as a common-law spouse, but you have a child together the new legislation will allow a parent to seek spousal support from the other parent. If you have already settled issues with your former spouse through a signed separation agreement or court order, or your court action has already been commenced, the new act will not apply to you; the current Family Relations Act will continue to apply. Separated spouses who have not commenced a court action, or signed a separation agreement by March will be governed by the new act. If you are consid-

ering separation, or have recently separated, you should consult a lawyer prior to March 18 to understand how these changes might affect you. An Abbotsford Police officer who has been with the department since 1992 is the 2012 recipient of the Paul N. Tinsley Scholarship. Sgt. Mike Drebit was presented with the honour on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the monthly meeting of the Abbotsford Police Board. During his time with the Abbotsford Police, Drebit has served in a multitude of roles, including with patrol, the bike squad, the riot troop, the crisis negotiation team and integrated border enforcement. He is now with the professional standards branch, as one of three officers who investigate public complaints. The scholarship will be used toward his studies which he began last year at the Justice Institute in family mediation and conflict resolution. The $2,000 award is presented annually to an Abbotsford Police member who is pursuing further studies. Tinsley was a former officer and deputy chief with the Abbotsford Police Department who died of cancer in 2005. After his retirement from policing in 2004, he became a full-time faculty member in the department of criminology and criminal justice at University of the Fraser Valley.

Five titles in five years for Derksen-Bergen When you get right down to it, it’s remarkable what Brina Derksen-Bergen has accomplished over her five seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds women’s volleyball team. The senior setter out of Abbotsford’s Rick Hansen Secondary guided the T-Birds to their sixth consecutive Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship last Saturday, defeating the Alberta Pandas in straight sets (25-13, 25-23, 25-18) in the national final in Sherbrooke, Que. UBC’s six straight titles ties a CIS women’s volleyball record – Alberta (1995-2000) and Winnipeg (198388) also managed the feat. Derksen-Bergen joins a select group of five T-Birds players who own five national gold medals, and UBC head coach Doug Reimer pointed out it’s an historic achievement. “I believe there were maybe two more players that did it when Alberta had their run in women’s volleyball, and I know there were a few basketball players at UVic (the Vikes men’s team won titles from 1980-86),” Reimer marveled. “But in other words, you can almost count on two hands the number of athletes in CIS team sports who have done this.” In the aftermath of Saturday’s win,

Abbotsford’s college women’s volleyball teams are both at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships this week, but they find themselves cast in vastly different roles. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades are the pre-tournament favourites – after spending the ma-

jority of the season as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, they’re the top seed at the national tourney, which is being hosted by Lakeland College in the Alberta/ S a s k atchew a n border town o f Lloydminster. Being billed as the frontrunner comes with a dose of pressure, but head coach Dennis Bokenfohr doesn’t believe it will faze his team. “I’ve told the play-

ers I’ll take all the pressure, they just have to go out there and perform,” he said. “(The No. 1 seeding) is nothing more than something that someone’s put upon us. M o r e t h a n anything else, it’s just flattering.” The Cascades open against the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics of Halifax in the quarter-finals today (Thursday). They have some familiar-

ity with MSVU – at last year’s nationals in Nanaimo, they faced the Mystics in their second game of the tourney and beat them en route to a bronze medal. “ I t builds c o m f o r t , because we kind of have an idea what we’re facing,” Bokenfohr noted. “We’re definitely not going to take them lightly.” While the Cascades are the favourites, the Columbia Bible

College Bearcats are among the underdogs. The Bearcats stunned many observers simply by qualifying for nationals, knocking off the defending CCAA champion Vancouver Island University Mariners in the PacWest semifinals to punch their ticket. They’re seeded seventh in the eightteam draw, and they take on the No. 2-seeded Collège Édouard-Montpetit Lynx, the Quebec league champions, in the quarter-finals. For a team making its national championship debut, it might be understandable if the Bearcats fell into the mental trap of simply being happy to be there. But head coach Duncan Harrison doesn’t think that will be an issue. He noted that B.C. teams have traditionally fared well on the national stage regardless of seeding, and said his team is focused on making the most of their opportunity. “We’ve always believed that if we can get out of our conference, we have a great chance at a medal at nationals,” he said. “The players are very focused – it’s been a very positive week of practice.” Looking ahead to his team’s matchup with the Lynx, Harrison said the Bearcats would have to “execute very well” in order to beat them. “They have some very strong players, and they’re a very complete team – very good defensively,” he said.

Nathan, 22, is coming off a breakout season of his own at UFV. After playing sparingly as a freshman in 2010-11 and redshirting in 201112, he emerged as a key player for the Cascades. His season hit a speed bump in mid-February, when it was discovered that his eligibility – unbeknownst to anyone – had lapsed on Feb. 1 and that he’d subsequently suited up for four games. The Cascades were stripped of two wins they’d earned during that stretch, and Nathan was suspended an additional four games. But he still finished fourth in team scoring (9.3 points per game) and third in rebounding (5.4), and was ninth in the Canada West conference in three-point percentage, knocking down 41.6 per cent of his shots from downtown. It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a sweet and gentle soul. Predeceased by her husband Ernest in 1993. She leaves to mourn her loss, brother Jim (Helen) Currie; son Robert (Pat) Forsyth; daughter Kathryn (John) Fothergill; grandchildren Paul (Amber), Elaine (Ric), Carlin and Adam; great-grandchildren Connor and Mikaela, as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Thank you to the staff at Abbotsford Hospital Emergency and HAU for their compassion and kindness. No service by request. A gathering of family and friends was her wish. Please join us on March 16, from 12 to 3 pm, at her home.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ed, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and dedicated volunteer. Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Roxane; sons: Nolan (Sharon) of Mission, Regan (Barbara) of Port Coquitlam, Brennan (Leslie) of Abbotsford and Logan (Stephanie) of Calgary, Alberta; brother: Jerry (Lis); grandchildren: Erik, Alyssa, Erryn, Andrew, Shayne, Justene, Trevor, Bryce, Chelsey & Nicholas; and nieces and nephew Heidi, Tina & Ben. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Ed served in the Air force as an airplane mechanic and later for many years as a customs inspector. He was a dedicated volunteer supporting many organizations including the Poor Clares, and the Knights of Columbus, and he and Roxane provided stable and warm-hearted supervision in the inmate escort program. His joy of life, kind heart and cheeky sense of humor will be missed by all. Services will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, 32550 7th Avenue, Mission B.C., Prayers 7:00 pm Mar. 7, and Funeral 11:00 am Mar. 8, 2013. Reception to follow: Elks Hall 33336 Second Ave, Mission, BC. KRAMER Eva Erika (Weisskopf) 1943 - 2013 Eva passed away after a brief battle with cancer on Sunday, March 3, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband Peter and her parents Johann and Elisabeth Weisskopf. She leaves behind her laughter, her love of food and family, her strength and her sense of adventure to all of those who knew her but especially to her daughters and their families, Sabina (Chris) and their son, Carson Kyba and Jessica (Matt) and their children Sophia, Isla and Amelia Germaine as well as her brother, Hans Weisskopf and extended family in Germany. Our wonderful Mom passed away in Mission Memorial Hospital on February 24, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband, Holger, and her youngest son Ross. Mom’s love and sense of community was given to her by her parents Elin and Oscar Forssell and growing up and retiring to Silverhill which Mom loved so much. Herring, Grace Marion (nee Smith)

Marion was born in New Westminster, BC on January 19, 1920 and died peacefully February 11, 2013, at The Cottage Pavilion in Abbotsford. Predeceased by her husband Phillip of 64 years, her parents Ross and Eva Smith and siblings Howard, Alistair and Isobel. Survived by her children, Alan (Colleen), Jane Koberstein (Bill), Ross (Betsy) and Ian (Maija); sister, Dorothy Beach, brother, Hugh Neil Smith; grandchildren, Mark (Madelyn), Elizabeth (Mike), Sonya (Steve), Eva (Cory), Laura (Cam), Sarah and Liam; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Andrew, Lachlan and Colton. Marion spent the first nine years of life growing up in the affluent part of New Westminster on the banks of the Fraser River. When the Depression hit in October 1929 the Smith family lost their business and downsized to their summer cottage on Sumas Prairie outside of Abbotsford. The Smiths then had to adapt to living off the land. The shortterm solution to a streak of bad luck, turned out to be good fortune for Marion and her siblings, as they came to love the beauty of the Prairie and life on a farm. While completing business school in New Westminster, she met Phillip. They married in 1942 and then spent the first two years of marriage apart as Phil served overseas in England,

North Africa and Italy with the 6th Field Co., Royal Canadian Engineers. After the war Phillip pursued a career in civil engineering and Marion became a homemaker. They relocated to the rainy climes of Ocean Falls up the coast of BC where Philip began his first job as City Engineer of Ocean Falls, and where Alan and Jane were born. In 1952 they moved to Kamloops where she gave birth to Ross. In 1956 they moved to their home in Burnaby where their last child, Ian was born. This was home for fifty-five years. While in Burnaby she became an avid gardener, art collector, joined the Burnaby Garden Club and enjoyed the company of the Burnaby Lapidary Club. She will be remembered for her volunteer efforts at Burnaby Art Gallery where she worked in the loan gallery and set up an SFU bursary for art students. She enjoyed spending weekends at the family property in Point Roberts, which has been in the Herring family since 1913. Marion travelled the world with Phillip after the children were grown. The family thanks Hallmark on the Lake and the staff of The Cottage Pavilion for their care and support in the last five years. On January 9th, 2013, Maryke Duyker went to be with her heavenly Father. Maryke was born in Westbroek, Holland on September 4th 1918, to Johannes and Reijertje Wateler. Maryke and Willem Duyker immigrated to Canada in 1951 with their three oldest sons, where they first lived and worked briefly on a farm in Harold, Ontario. Their time in Canada took the family from Harold, to London Ontario, then to Peterborough Ontario and finally to Abbotsford, BC in 1982. Upon arriving in Canada, leaving behind the comforts and security of family and friends in Eindhoven, Holland, Maryke worked ceaselessly to build a new life and support her husband and family of five boys. No task was too small or menial for Maryke, and all were undertaken with diligence and commitment. She always noticed and reached out to those who were less fortunate or somehow burdened. She was a tireless worker who gave generously of herself. Maryke was well known for giving hundreds and hundreds of flower bouquets to those who were shut in at places like Extendicare or Civic Hospital in Peterborough, or simply to

Art was born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, the second of 6 children born to Johann & Margaretha (Rempel) Kropp. They were Mennonite immigrants from Russia. When Art was 16, his family moved to the Fraser Valley, purchasing a dairy farm in the Chilliwack area. The family attended the East Chilliwack Mennonite Church, where he first met the love of his life. In 1954 Art & Margaret (Peters) were married. In their journey together, they became parents to 5 children: David, Joyce (Del) Penner, Gilbert (Carol), Karen and Steve (Marianne). In 1960 they left Chilliwack and moved their young family to northern BC, where they were involved in church ministry for 7 years. Moving back to Chilliwack, Art and his brother-in-law began a construction company. For the next 25 years he built residential homes, keeping his sons busy during their breaks from school. During this time he was also heavily involved at his church, volunteering wherever he was needed, including 20 years as their Assistant Pastor. As their kids became independent, Art & Margaret did some traveling, includ-

the churches or to her neighbours wherever she lived. She became known as the â€œFlower Ladyâ€?, as she picked the flowers from her own garden and those of friends and neighbours. Maryke was predeceased by her husband Willem and her son Hans, who both passed away in 1996. She is survived by her sons, Pete (Joanne, grandchildren Geoff, Sarah, and Ashley, great-grandchildren Bennett, Chase and Ashton), Ron (grandchildren Eli and Christina, great-grandchildren Lola, Jude, Ridley and Milo), Rob (Laurie, grandchildren Jonathan, David and Benjamin), Eric (Delee, grandchildren Nicola and Willem), daughter-in-law Helinda and all of the many friends that she made over the years. Art was lost without his wife, but slowly got on with his life after being reminded repeatedly that he still had some big responsibilities as a parent and grandparent. He enjoyed these times together with his family and took an active role in keeping us all together. He also really enjoyed his volunteer work at Camp Squeah and the Chilliwack MCC Store. In 2006 he sold the family home and purchased a smaller townhouse in the Redwood Villa complex, next to his church. He enjoyed this setting, however his health began to fail and in 2010 he made one more move, to the Menno Home in Abbotsford. Art is survived by his 5 children and their spouses, 9 grandchildren and some spouses, 2 great grandchildren, his siblings John, Ruth (Jake) Schellenberg, Mary (Art) Zacharias, Don (Judy) and brother-in-law George Dyck, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was also survived by his wifeâ€™s side of the family, the Peters Clan. Predeceased by his parents, his wife Margaret, his sister Dorothy and sister-in-law Lydia. We wish to thank the wonderful staff at the Menno Hospital (East 1) for the great care they gave our dad for the final 2 years of his life. The Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, March 9th, at 2:00 PM, at the Eden Mennonite Church in Chilliwack.
