For the second time in two weeks, Campbell River Mounties executed one of the biggest drug busts in the city’s history. This time RCMP officers seized 75 grams of heroin, an assortment of other drugs and $226,000 in cash during a Friday raid of a Carlyle Crescent residence. “This is a large amount of currency seized from a residence, and the second large seizure in a short time,” said Cpl. Poppy Hallam in a news release. On Feb. 15, Mounties seized 11 ounces of cocaine and $159,000 in
cash during a bust of residence located in the vicinity of Alder Street and Coronation Crescent. Three people were arrested at the scene and charged with trafficking. They are due to appear in Campbell River provincial court on March 18. Hallam said the two busts are unrelated. In the latest raid, a 43-year-old Campbell River man was arrested and later released on conditions. His name was not released. Police are recommending he be charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Morning crunch A man and a woman in a Ford Taurus stationwagon were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a collision Tuesday, shortly before 9 a.m., on Dogwood Street and 16th Avenue. The accident involved three vehicles, the Ford, a commercial van and a blue Toyota pickup. The intersection is one of the worst in the city for accidents.
Area directors on the Strathcona Regional District board are in for a big pay raise. Directors, at the regular board meeting last Thursday, voted to increase four directors’ annual base salaries from $20,699 to $31,128 retroactive to 2012. The area directors getting the raise are Brenda Leigh (Oyster Bay-Buttle Lake), Jim Abram
(Quadra Island), Noba Anderson (Cortes Island) and Gerald Whalley (Kyuquot-Nootka). The raise will come from the electoral area directors’ budget. But not all directors were on the same page, despite the raise already being endorsed by directors at a previous Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting. Whalley thought otherwise. “The money here is already in the budget for 2012 in anticipation that it would be in the budget,� Whalley said. “It was already agreed upon in the COW meeting, I don’t know why this keeps getting dragged up again.� Directors also approved an increase in pay for municipal directors from $10,372 to $12,072. However the raise will not go into effect until 2015. The raise was recommended by an outside consultant who based his suggestions on pay scales at other regional districts. Director Claire Mo glove thought the comparison was unfair. “I do not believe we as municipal directors need an increase in 2015,� Moglove said. “I thought the comparison to the Comox Valley Regional District was misplaced and was comparing apples to oranges.� Leigh disagreed. “I think we have to look...to the future and I think we as elected officials have a lot of responsibility and even municipal directors on this board have a lot of responsibility so I would support a moderate increase,� Leigh said. Director Jude Schooner (Tahsis) said the increase should be dealt with in 2015 while directors Ron Kerr and Walter Jakeway were in favour of the increase. “We have enough division on this board and I think not voting for the municipal increase makes the gap even wider,� Jakeway said. “This group needs to pull together.� In the end, the motion to increase municipal directors’ salaries in 2015 passed with MacDonald, Moglove and Schooner opposed. Directors also approved a pay cut to the board chair, Ted Lewis (Zeballos). Lewis cur rently receives $33,145 in addition to his regular directors’ pay, but under the new remuneration changes,
his pay for the role of chair will be reduced to $19,872. This is the first time since 2006 that the regional district has reviewed its remuneration policy. The current review has been ongoing for more than a year. Maurice Lamb of Lamb and Associates was hired to review the remuneration bylaw and had a report in front of the regional district board last month, recommending the board adopt pay rates equal to the Central Kootenay Regional District – the highest in the province. Directors were hesitant to approve pay changes until they
were able to meet with Lamb and receive clear direction. Leigh said it was inappropriate for board members to decide their own salaries. “It will get ugly. It will fracture our board,� Leigh said at a board meeting Jan. 24. “I don’t want to set my own pay. I want my pay to be according to what’s fair around the province.� Leigh also acknowledged that directors were due for a pay raise. “Remuneration-wise we’re so unappreciated. If my constituents knew what I was making they would be appalled,� Leigh said. “I don’t do it for the

money.� According to the re gional district’s 2011 financial statements, directors received the following in remuneration and expenses: Craig Anderson ($49,062), Abram ($32,477), Whalley ($28,348), Noba Anderson ($27,615), Leigh ($27,493), Lewis ($17,528), Mo glove ($14,618), Mary Storry ($13,643), MacDonald ($13,618), and Schooner ($719), who did not serve a full year. Those figures include base remuneration as well as additional earnings board members receive for attending meetings (up to $125 per meeting), and other expenses.

Fashion Inferno’s a real barn-burner for firefighter’s fund More than 360 people filled the Community Centre on Saturday night in best-ever attendance at the annual Fashion Inferno. And the great turn-out resulted in a fantastic fundraiser for the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund. Just over $15,000 was raised which will help people survive and recover from serious burns. People like Heidi Cave. She was the guest speaker at the 11th annual event and when she spoke, barely a whisper could be heard in the packed house. Cave told the story of how her car was hit by a speeding driver. The impact killed her best friend and the resulting fire almost killed Cave. She lost both her lower legs and recovery from the burns took years. But Cave says she’s a survivor, not a

victim, and with the help of the burn unit, she now lives an active life, is married and has two children – truly inspirational. The event is put on by the Campbell River chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

The Strathcona Regional District’s first administrator is leaving Campbell River. B r i a n Re a rd o n , chief administrative officer of the Strathcona Regional District (SRD), will be taking over the chief administrator duties for the Regional District of the Central Okanagan effective April 15. Reardon said he’s excited to start the newest chapter in his life. “I am thrilled to be given this incredible opportunity to work with the Central Okanagan Regional Board, its staff and its regional partners in building upon its success as a recognized leader in regional governance and in creating a healthy, sustainable region,” Reardon

said in a news release issued by the Regional District of the Central Okanagan. “I look forward to working with the board, and with staff to ensure the board’s strategic objectives are achieved and find new ways to strengthen the regional federation.” Reardon came to the SRD in late 2008 and was the first chief administrative officer for the SRD which was formed in February 2008 after splitting

At the time, Reardon said “the opportunity to start a brand new regional district and put my mark on a new organization is very attractive.” Reardon came to the SRD after spending 11 years as chief administrative officer of the North Okanagan Regional District. The chair of Reardon’s new employer – the Regional District of the Central Okanagan – said Reardon’s past employment makes him the right person for his new position. “Mr. Reardon is very familiar with the Okanagan and has excellent leadership credentials,” said Robert Hobson, chair of the Regional District of the Central Okanagan. “His combination of experience in the regional district form
of government along with his leadership talent makes him the perfect fit as the person to head our organization for the years ahead.” The Regional District of Central Okanagan includes the municipalities of Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, and West Kelowna as well as the unincorporated Central Okanagan East and Central Okanagan West electoral areas. While the Regional District of Central Okanagan officially announced Reardon’s appointment last Friday, the Strathcona Regional District has yet to publicly speak about Reardon’s departure. A request to the Strathcona Regional District for comment as to who will replace Re a r d o n w a s n o t answered before the Mirror went to press.

The mayor is proposing a crackdown on tree falling in order to protect eagle nests. Mayor Walter Jakeway was expected to bring forward a motion at Tuesday’s council meeting that would impose penalties on anyone who cuts down a tree in which eagles have made their home. Jakeway’s motion is to have city staff “report back on options for council to adopt bylaw regulations and corresponding fines that would serve to help protect eagle nest trees.” The proposed motion is in response to an incident that occurred last year. On the morning of Feb. 27, 2012 a property owner cut down an active bald eagle nest tree located on the ridge south of Rockland Road. The tree, which was registered in the province’s nest tree database and mapped in the city’s Sustainable Official Community Plan as an environmentally-sensitive area, was supposed to be protected under the Provincial Wildlife Act. Any disturbance within a 60-metre area around a nest requires a city development per-

mit and only the province can authorize the removal of an eagle nest tree. The city’s development permit guidelines also require a 60-metre naturally-vegetated buffer around the eagle nest tree. However, the city has no enforcement tools at its disposal, specifically fines or penalties. Jakeway said last year he was disappointed the city did not have better protection for eagle nest trees and promised that would change. He said if he had his way, the city would impose hefty fines – $1,000 per growth ring. It’s estimated Campbell River has 25 bald eagle breeding territories within the city limits. Preventing the loss of nesting trees is key in ensuring the long-term viability of the eagle population. But that’s proven to be difficult. According to the province’s Wildlife Tree Stewardship Program’s 2010 report, all known eagle nest trees in two nesting territories in the Willow Point area have been cut down. The report also noted that between 1990 to 1999 from Qualicum Beach to Campbell River, 17 of 253 known nest trees have been lost, in the same areas. Council was expected to debate Jakeway’s motion at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Dogwood Street drug business didn’t pay PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The Hideout Smoke Shop it was not. Police knew exactly where it was and what was going on when they raided the former business in the Dogwood Plaza at 2nd Avenue on Feb. 10, 2011. The store was filled with paraphernalia to use and package illicit drugs – which is illegal – and Mounties got an unexpected bonus
when one of the owners arrived. When Stephen Bishop showed up he was promptly arrested for importing/exporting drug instruments or literature. Another 43-year-old man was also arrested, but was never charged. As for Bishop, when police searched him they found a collapsable baton, almost 14 grams of marijuana, 11 tabs of ecstasy and two small packages
of cocaine containing half a gram each. The coke was also packaged in “green alien� wrappers which were found for sale inside the store. As a result, he was also charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Bishop was released on bail conditions, but got into more trouble in the early morning hours this past New
Year’s Day. It was shortly after 1 a.m., and Bishop was driving by the RCMP detachment on Dogwood Street when a police cruiser just pulled out of the parking lot and spotted the tattered insurance tag on the rear licence plate. When Bishop made an illegal lane change, the officer took the opportunity to stop the car. The officer noted that
Bishop appeared very nervous and could also smell a strong odour of “green marijuana� wafting from the vehicle. Bishop was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. An initial search turned up two joints and four ba gs of cocaine containing half a gram each. Later, a police dog was given the chance to sniff out the vehicle and hit upon the car
stereo. Behind the stereo was more drugs: 5.9 grams of cocaine and three packages of crack cocaine weighing in at 2.5 grams. On Monday, in Campbell River provincial court, the 33-year-old entered guilty pleas, relating to the first set of charges, to two counts of simple possession and importing drug instruments. On the second set of charges, he pleaded guilty to possession
and trafficking. In a joint submission presented to the judge on behalf of the Crown and the defence, Bishop accepted a 10-month jail sentence. All the items seized from Bishop and the store were forfeited. He must also provide a DNA sample to the national police registry and is prohibited from possessing firearms for the next 10 years. Bishop had no previous criminal record.

Transit bus drivers are in a strike position, but their union representative is hopeful a deal can be reached. Sixty public transit workers in Campbell River and the Comox Valley are the lowest paid in B.C., according to Stu Shields of the CAW union which represents the employees.
However, the real issue is the cost of benefits provided by Watson & Ash Transportation, the local contractors who provide public bus and Handydart service on behalf of BC Transit. “The workers‌are the lowest paid in the province and have close to the weakest retirement plan,â€? said Shields. “What these work“One call, and we’ll do it allâ€?

Haakstad, whose name had the misfortune of appearing atop the controversial memo as its author,
has been a part of premier’s inner circle of advisors and confidantes since June 2001, when she served as Clark’s executive assistant. It’s hard to believe Haakstad would issue any memo without the full knowledge and consultation of her boss. Of course wooing specific interests isn’t a new election strategy. Heck, it’s pretty much what every election campaign is about. But for a government that can’t seem to get out of its own way as it stumbles toward a spring campaign as the underdog, the 17-page document that outlines ways to win favour with ethnic communities offends on two fronts – by using non-political government resources and information for political purposes,
and by patronizing ethnic groups. It’s true these strategies are no doubt discussed in caucus and campaign strategy meetings of parties of every political stripe. But the memo suggests the BC Liberals clearly crossed a line. Opening the drawer to expose the BC Liberals’ dirty laundry is embarrassing. For that, someone had to take the fall. Just as members of the premier’s communications team have paid the price for her previous gaffes. The way things are going, they’re just beating her to the unemployment line. – Black Press

Direct pay property taxes I am looking again on how I will find a big lump sum to pay my property taxes and I was thinking why don’t we have the option of doing monthly direct payments from the bank or, for those who do not want to do direct payments that they could ask for a simple payment book, similar to a cheque book from the council to pay the property taxes throughout the year? It could be the taxes are broken down to 11 monthly payments over a twelve monthly payment and in the last month the full outstanding balance would have to be paid. If you opt for this you loose the 10 per cent discount and any late payment in the last month would have an added 10 per cent charge. I would think this option would make my financing a lot easier rather than trying to set aside the big lump sum over the year as other life situations often take away saved cash for emergencies and often makes me worry if I can find a few thousand in a few weeks. Just a shared thought, from a struggling hand to mouth hard working family whose bills and extra taxes keep going up but wages don’t. Thinking how I can pay my way. Interview with Joe Oliver on oil, gas and coal

Federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver attended last week’s international conference in Vancouver on liquefied natural gas development. I spoke with him about Canada’s energy exports and emissions. Here are excerpts from that discussion: TF: President Barack Obama’s recent state of union address seemed to hint at approval for the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to U.S. refineries, with perhaps some measure to go along with it like a carbon cap and trade market. Your government has backed North American cap and trade before. Would you do it again? JO: No, we’re not thinking about that at all. The U.S. Congress is
opposed to that concept from what I understand. TF: Your party ran ads targeting NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and equating cap and trade with a carbon tax. They’re not the same, are they? JO: The end result is that taxes increase because of how we handle carbon. It hasn’t been successful in Europe at all. Anyway, it’s not part of our thinking. We are making significant progress on greenhouse gas emissions. Our recent regulations regarding heavy-duty vehicles, the previous rules regarding cars and light trucks, which are identical to the U.S., are going to be helpful. And also the rules relating to coalfired electricity. It’s our objective to
see all those coal plants closed, and in that regard we’re certainly ahead of the U.S. Coal is contributing 40 times the greenhouse gas emissions of the oil sands. And actually the oil sands are less than half the emissions from coal-fired electricity in the state of Illinois. We’re moving with the U.S. on the over-arching objective of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 to 2020, but we’re also doing other things that the U.S. hasn’t yet decided to do. We’ve been approaching the reduction of emissions on a sectoral basis, and the next area of focus will be regulations in the oil and gas sector.
TF: You’re comfortable with the idea that exporting LNG that replaces coal is an appropriate step at this time, one that’s doable as opposed to these Kyoto-type gestures? JO: It is doable. And on a global basis, this would be a very significant development. If China, for example, could significantly move from coal to gas, that would have a huge impact. Canada’s small. We’re about two per cent of global emissions. We have to do our part, that’s the responsible thing to do, but it’s the big emitters that are going to make the difference to global emissions. MLA: Let’s see hospital plan North Island MLA Claire Trevena has called on the government to release the business plan for the $600-million North Island Hospitals Project. “Some select people have been able to see the business plan on how $600 million is going to be spent, how decisions were made, how the construction will evolve – but the health authority categorically refuses to make it public,” she
said in a press release. “I hope that the Minister of Health will share it with the people of the North Island and put to rest some of the serious concerns we have. “People in the community want to make sure that if we are spending $266 million on Campbell River Hospital – 40 per cent of which is being paid by local taxpayers through the regional hospital board – we get what we need.”
The current Campbell River hospital is designed for 59 patients but regularly has as many as 83 people in care. While the new hospital will have 95 beds, many in the community are concerned this expansion will not meet the needs of the growing population over the 50-year lifespan of the building. Yet doctors who expressed concer ns about the hospital plans have been told that if they do not agree, the
hospital would not be built, Trevena told the legislature. “I was appalled when I heard that the doctors were intimidated in this way. I heard of other health care workers who have been told that if they questioned things, it would mean we would not get our hospital,” said Trevena, describing the situation as blatant political gamesmanship. She spoke of the constant overcrowding in the hospital,

with surgical day care beds regularly being used for other patients because there is no space elsewhere, and of patients being left on stretchers for days at a time because there are no beds. “People have worked long and hard for high quality health care in our community,” said Trevena. “After years we have agreement that we will have a new hospital. If you already own, or are thinking about buying, a U.S. property, you’ll have lots of Canuck company. According to the U.S.based National Association of Realtors, Canadians are the largest group of foreign buyers in the U.S., accounting for 24 per cent of international sales in 2012.* So, you’re making a popular choice when you purchase a U.S. property – and when it comes to paying the bills that come with it, being taxed like a Canadian is a good thing. Here’s why. • Know your ‘visit limits’ Most people think that if their U.S. stay is shorter than six months, they won’t have to ¿le a U.S. tax return. But the formula is more complicated than that: When you reside in the U.S. for more than 182 days in the current year or exceed 182 days in combination with the current year, 1/3 of the days in the preceding year, and 1/6 of the days in the second preceding year, under most circumstances, you will be
required to ¿le a U.S. tax return. • You may be able to avoid being deemed a U.S. ‘resident’ for tax purposes by ¿ling a Closer Connection Exemption for Aliens (IRS form 8840) which provides proof that your economic and social ties (such as the location of your permanent home, family and business activities, banking relationships, and so on) are more signi¿cant to Canada than to the U.S. • Rent or not? If you intend to rent your property, you will be required to ¿le a U.S. tax return and be subject to a 30 per cent withholding tax. The net rental income is also subject to Canadian tax less a Foreign Tax Credit for taxes paid in the U.S. • When you sell Canadians are taxed on their worldwide income – which means that if you decide to sell your U.S. property, the sale must be reported on your Canadian tax return and on a U.S. tax return. The full amount of any capital gain is taxable in the U.S. and you might also have to pay state tax, depending on where your property is located. If the sale price is

Young man wanted for theft A 19-year-old Campbell River man is wanted by police for outstanding theft charges. There are four active arrest warrants out for Justin Daniel Lavallee. More rock throwing and BB shots The ongoing rockthrowing at cars is bad enough, now someone is taking pot shots at vehicles with a BB gun. Last week, RCMP reported one incident where a vehicle was apparently hit in the
windshield by a BB or pellet, and now there’s a second report. This one occurred Feb. 27, around 1 p.m. A woman was driving south on the Island Highway, near the Anchor Inn, when she heard a loud crack from the passenger side window of her Jeep. “When she got home, she realized her vehicle had been hit by what appears to be a pellet,” said RCMP Cpl. Poppy Hallam in a news release. Police are also still receiving reports of kids throwing rocks at vehicles, most of which have occurred on Dogwood Street between 2nd and 9th avenues. The reports have been coming in for a month and so far there have been no arrests. On Saturday, at 2:07 p.m., four young males were seen throwing rocks at cars on Dogwood at 4th Avenue. One male was wearing a black hoodie with a bright green liner and the other had a red and white striped shirt under a dark jacket. The males were described as skinny and 10-12 years old. Two fled behind Carihi School when the driver stopped. Police did question two youths, but the driver confirmed they were not the suspects. An hour earlier Saturday, five males were throwing rocks at cars on Alder Street and

One male was wearing a black sweater and black toque. “Two males were stopped a few blocks away and identified, however, there was not enough evidence to link them to the rock throwing,” said Hallam. A fire truck was even hit by rocks on Friday night. The fire crew was returning to the hall from a call-out at 11:27 p.m., and were passing behind the curling club on Cedar Street, when the truck was hit. The crew was unable to identify a suspect. Finally, on Feb. 28, at 10:32 a.m., police responded to a call of two males throwing rocks at vehicles at Dogwood and 9th Avenue. The caller said the boys appeared to be around 15 years old and possibly of First Nations descent. One of the suspects was wearing a red, pullover parka and possibly goes by the name “Eric.” “The descriptions of the males should sound familiar to someone in the community,” said Hallam. “The black hoodie with a bright green liner, or the red pullover type parka are fairly distinct.” Anyone with information should contact the RCMP or, anonymously, Crime Stoppers.

A new location for the shuttered Cortes Island library will go before a public hearing later this month. Directors at last Thursday’s regional district board meeting gave first two readings to a bylaw amendment that will allow Cortes’ Linnaea Farm Society to re-locate the library to its former school building. The society needs the regional district to allow “public library” as an accepted use in the Agricultural Land Stewardship One zone in order to re-open the library at the old school at 1255 Seaford Road. But before the bylaw amendment can be approved, the issue needs to go to a public hearing. Strathcona Regional District staff had recommended the hearing be held on April 6 but Cortes Island director Noba Anderson wanted that changed. Anderson requested the board change the date to Wednesday,
March 27. “The date (change) is simply that it allows us to get to the board m e e t i n g e a rl i e r, ” Anderson said. “This approval has taken us a long time and we want to move as quickly as we can.” Anderson’s hope is that by moving the date, the bylaw change can go back in front of the regional district board by its April 3 meeting. It would then have to go to the Vancouver Island Regional Library board which meets April 6. If it misses that meeting, the bylaw would not be able to go in front of the library board until June 15 when it meets again. For Cortes Islanders the library has been a priority since it was unexpectedly shut down last May by the Vancouver Island Regional Library due to safety concerns surrounding the build-
ing’s mezzanine. An inspector found the weight of the library books was too much for the floor to bear and the regional library was forced to close the library out of fear the floor could collapse. Vancouver Island Re g i o n a l L i b r a r y issued a Request for Proposals last June to seek out a new space for the library after talks with the Southern Cortes Community Association to find a temporary location broke down. The Linnaea Farm Society was the only respondent and entered into an intent to lease agreement with the Va n c o u ve r I s l a n d Regional Library on Sept. 15. The society intends to house the library in the Twinflower wing (built in 2006) of the former Linnaea School which was established in 1987 as an alternative educational program.

Arts & Entertainment Coachman serves up live jazz Forbidden Jazz Trio headlines the Royal Coachman Pub this Saturday. Comprised of Jake Masri on trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals, Jim Chew on guitar, and Grahame Edwards on bass, they strive to reach audiences of all ages by performing a wide variety of timeless jazz standards. Representing more than four decades of experience, their unique blend of voice, brass and strings will weave their collective magic through three sets of entertaining music. On lead guitar is Chew. Over the past 35 years, Chew has explored all areas of music - from trios to show bands, both live and in the studio. During his teens, Chew was inspired by Django Reinhardt, and went on to study classical guitar for three years. He eventually discovered a passion for jazz which led him on a path of playing and teaching in the jazz program at Mount Royal College in Calgary. W h e n h e w a s n’ t immersing himself in jazz, he supplemented his income as a commercial freelance musician. This experience left him with a broad base of influences which he now applies directly to his playing style. Chew presently resides in Campbell River and frequently
Grahame Edwards, Jim Chew and Jake Masri, a local jazz trio, perform this Saturday afternoon at the Royal Coachman Pub. performs with a wide variety of local talented musicians. Talented multi instrumentalist Edwards studied music at the University of British Columbia. Aside from both acoustic and electric bass, Edwards also plays percussion and trumpet. He has appeared with countless local ensembles and productions in every genre from choral to musical theatre, big band jazz to classical. His first musical love, however, lies with improvised music and he enjoys playing and composing his own jazz tunes. In addition to performing, Edwards has
taught both privately and in the Campbell River School District, and enjoys sharing his music by conducting workshops and clinics. Over the years, he has studied with many respected jazz musicians including Don Clarke, Phil Nimmons, Chris Nelson, and Paul Horn. No stranger to the local music scene, Masri draws his inspiration from classical repertoire to musical theater to Afro-Cuban/ N ew O rl e a n s, a n d Bebop styles. His passion for jazz is directly linked to artists such as Herb Alpert, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, and
Arturo Sandoval. As a performance major at VCC, UVIC, & UBC, Masri studied trumpet with Boyd Hood, Gerald Gerbrecht, and trombonist, Dave Robbins. His studies in jazz exposed him to pros such as Mike Herriot, Bill Clarke, and Hugh Fraser during the local CYMC summer program. Come to the Coachman for a casual, entertaining afternoon of jazz. Camping reservation system opens March 15 Campers, get the marshmallows ready! Discover Camping, the Province's camping reservation system, soon will be up and running for another season with even more campgrounds and sites to choose from. Starting at 7 a.m. on Friday, March 15, Discover Camping will be gin acce pting reservations for campg rounds with reservable inventory. In total, there are over 4,500 reservable sites. With a few clicks of the mouse, up to three reservations can be made online in one easy transaction through Discover Camping. Individual sites are available up to three months in advance, while group sites are available up to 12 months in advance. This interactive system allows campers to view the availability, layouts and amenities at 113 reservable c a m p g ro u n d s t h at campers can generally drive into (front country campgrounds) including group sites, in 96 provincial parks throughout British
Columbia. These campgrounds are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. This year, more sites at more campgrounds are available to reserve. BC Parks has added four new campgrounds to the reservation system: Kleanza Creek, Martha Creek, Chilliwack Lake and Bowron Lake. Those looking to reserve a spot at Lac La Hache will be pleased to know this campground has been restored to the reservation system after a one-year absence. Campg rounds at Kikomun Creek, Okanagan Lake North and Porteau Cove now will be 100 per cent reservable. Customer service has been enhanced this year through improvements to guidelines around refund requests. Group site campers now will receive reminder emails of their upcoming camping vacation. Discover Camping also offers a mobile platfor m so smartphone users can easily make and change plans from the road. This

C a m p b e l l R ive r Youth Soccer U16-Boys Bluebacks travelled to Victoria to meet Bays United U16 Boys in a winner-take-all match with a place in the provincial championships on the line. Home field advantage was firmly set with the South Island champs as the contest was on the artificial turf at Topaz Park. The full size pitch with its smooth running carpet meant the local lads had to get the feel for the conditions and that always takes a little time. The Bluebacks played 80 per cent of the first half in the Victoria end. This gave the boys time to get their touch on the ball right and kept the Bays on their

running out, the home team pulled out all the stops bringing their keeper forward on free kicks and corners and trying desperately to overwhelm Campbell River. One last well-taken corner into the box, a mad scramble and a clear off the line and the game was over. A hard fought well-played contest by two wellmatched teams ended with the Bluebacks from Campbell River coming home with the prize and the ultimate youth soccer road trip in their future; a Provincial game in Prince George in early July. The Bluebacks are a team Campbell River should know about. These boys have been together for years representing the town through tough situations. In the early years they played
mainly against teams their own age but the past few they have had to mostly play older, bigger, stronger, faster and more experienced sides week after week. They have taken it on the chin time after time but they have always picked themselves up and dusted themselves off and showed up the next week to do it all over again. It is not that much fun but the strength of character these boys have shown will serve them well in the future. There are 18 boys on this team and it takes every single one of them to carry the Campbell River colours and do this city proud. The community of Campbell River can count on Bluebacks F.C. to do just that in Prince George at the Provincial Championships.
Tyee tussle The Bantam A Tyees came out second best in a weekend series against the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies in games two and three of a best of three Island final. The Tyees went into the weekend a game up on the strength of an 8-7 victory in Campbell River Feb. 27. On Saturday, March 2, the Grizzlies tied the series at home in Victoria with a 4-0 victory, forcing the rubber match in Campbell River Sunday.
