Long night after midnight plummet off road

Clear thinking and a strong will to survive kept 19-year old Lillie Young of Marysville alive two weeks ago when her car went off the road and down the embankment at McPhee Bridge. Lillie is recovering at home now, after a week at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, with injuries including a broken back, severe bruising, cuts and abrasions. The accident occurred just after midnight on February 18, 2013. Lillie spoke to the Bulletin this week about

her experience. “I was at my friend’s house in Cranbrook and driving home just after midnight, maybe 12:30,” she said. “Right before McPhee, I skidded off the road. “I don’t remember
going down the bank. I don’t remember crashing or rolling. I woke up in my car. I got that my car was upside down, but I didn’t know how I got there. I remember crawling out. I squeezed out and my back was hurting.” The airbags had deployed and Lillie was wearing a seatbelt. She has injuries from both, but realizes it could have been much worse if she wasn’t belted in. “I looked at my car and then I tried to find my phone but I couldn’t find it. It was so cold out.” Lillie says she had a vague idea where she was — she could see the
bridge and figured out she was down the bank. At the time she thought she was on the east side of the bridge, though she would realize later she was on the west side. Her car left the road just by the old entrance to Shadow Mountain and came to rest on a shelf above the river. She couldn’t hear any traffic, and given the time of night she didn’t think there would be any. “I knew no one would find me. “I went back in my car. I was still trying to find my phone. The Children and Staff at the Kimberley Independent School celebrated anti bullying day on Feb 27th. The school had a power point presentation for students and parents during morning assembly. The children made a mural and wore pink to shed light on the issues sounding bullying. The students shared stories and poems about their solutions to bullying. We want everyone to walk away with the slogan; be a H.E.R.O. (Helps Everyone, Respect Others). A friendship club was started and meets weekly, to discuss ways to nurture a caring community and positive actions during play. The Kimberley Independent School has a zero tolerance towards bullying, the kids at KIS took a pledge to be the change they want to see in the world.
A couple of upcoming events, offered through the Kimberley Chamber of Commerce, will be of interest to local business owners. The first is a technology session with Google’s top thought leaders, brought in with a live feed from the Googleplex in Mountain View, California. The 90 minute session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre. Enjoy 90 minutes of great content, food, and discussions about how technology is changing the methods you can best reach your customers. This is a free seminar and is open to the first 20 participants only. The Kimberley Community Development Society was formed in 1984 and over the years has been involved in the building of many of Kimberley’s assets from golf courses to campgrounds. Two years after its formation, Mac Sykes came on board and has served on the Society ever since. On Thursday night, former and current Society members, employees and City staff and Council gathered to honour Sykes as he steps down as Chair of the KCDS. Deputy Mayor Jack Ratcliffe, who spoke Thursday evening of Syke’s accomplishments, says that in addition to all his volunteer work, Sykes was also Administrator of Kimberley and District Hospital, and a World War II paratrooper. “We appreciate Mac’s long service to Kimberley and his country,” Ratcliffe said. Sykes was also instrumental in saving and developing the Kimberley Ski and Summer Resort in the 1980’s when it was facing bankruptcy, says former Mayor Jim Ogilvie. The City bought the resort for 25 cents on the dollar and took on a debt of $700,000 with special permission from the province to borrow that much money. “We looked for people to run the Soci-
ety,” Ogilvie recalled. “We said here’s this ski resort. It has $700,000 owing. We want you to pay it off, make a go of it and don’t come back and ask for any more money. Mac was among those who stepped forward. We didn’t even

Agnes Owen remembered ANTHONY DR ANSFELD For the Bulletin
A
nother pillar of the community of Kimberley has passed from the scene. Agnes Owen (nee Aikman) has left us at the age of 94. Agnes came to Kimberley B. C. at the age of 12 in 1931, at the beginning of the Great Depression. Her family opened Aikmans Restaurant in 1934, when Kimberley was a booming mining town. Certainly “the place” to eat uptown was Aikmans (located on Deer Park Ave). Many of my high school classmates packed their booths daily as each one had its own Wurlitzer Music Box (three songs for 10 cents) When I started going
there, you could get a hamburger for 30 cents and a plate of fries and gravy (specialty of the house) for 25 cents, and a cherry coke for a dime. The businessmen in Kimberley — namely Milo Fabro, Russ Lytle, Wilf Mason, Dickie bova, Fred Holmes, Bill Spence, my dad Tony Dransfeld, Pat Oakley, Rollie Messerschmidt, and the Mayor of Kimberley Bud Buckle — hung out at The Grill (just around the corner from Aikmans on Spokane Street) but the younger crowd in Kimberley and their sports teams were treated very well by Agnes and her husband Art who split his time between Aikmans and their camera shop which was located directly across the street.

I remember Agnes Owen seemed to be everywhere in Aikmans, up at the cash register, wiping down tables, chatting with her customers and washing up dishes in the kitchen. As teenagers we did not have a lot of money, but Mrs. Owen always let us pack in a booth and never hounded us about how long we stayed, or how much we ordered. Agnes (I only ever called her Mrs. Owen) was for the lack of a better word a “magical” person, never ever speaking ill of anyone, always with a smile on her face and a constant sparkle in her eye. Some people pick up your day just by doing something as simple as taking your order, or your payment for a nice meal. That was Agnes Owen. The Trail smoke Eater Hockey Team were regular customers at Aikmans when they were in town to play the Kimberley Dynamiters. One day Adolph Tambelinni, Dave Rusnell, Norm Lenarden, and their star goalie Seth Martin were sitting in a booth next to us. We talked to them for like 20 minutes, and they gave us their autographs on an Aikman napkin (impressive stuff when you are a kid in Kimberley) The Smoke Eaters had then just won the World Ice Hockey Championships.
Art Owen preceded his wife in death 10 years ago. Their marriage was the old fashioned kind, based on love and mutual self respect for one another. Agnes had been living here in Kimberley at the Pines until her recent passing. Her daughter Bonnie McKenzie resides in Kimberley with her husband Brian McKenzie (who was an immense help and friend to Agnes these past years) Both Bonnie and her sister Gerry were waitresses at Aikmans during their teenage years and summer months when they returned from college. Agnes had a brother Cecil Aikman, who was also in the family business back in the day. On a historical note there were two special people at the Kimberley United Church for Agnes Owens Memorial Service on February 9. Esther Kinrade and Lenny the Barber had both known Agnes Aikman since they were five years old. Imagine that. Old time Kimberley roots run very deep. Agnes Aikman Owen was one of the finest people you could ever meet. I guess that is why there were no empty seats on Saturday at the Kimberley United Church when people gathered to say goodbye to Agnes.
CRANBROOK, BC (February 28, 2013) -- The urban deer population reduction program in the City of Cranbrook has been completed. The program began on Thursday February 7, 2013 with the setup and baiting of traps and concluded on Thursday February 28, 2013, with a total of 24 mule deer being captured and euthanized over an approximately 18 day trapping period. The breakdown of the mule deer captured is as follows: 7 adult bucks, 10 adult does and 7 yearlings. Although there was provision in the Wildlife Permit to capture and euthanize both mule deer and white-tail deer, the contractor was instructed by the City and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) to release any captured white-tail deer, if it was deemed safe to do so, for both the deer and the contractor. Five white-tail deer were captured during the program. All five were released by the contractors unharmed. The Wildlife Permit was issued to the City of Cranbrook in late November 2012, by the MFLNRO and expires on March 15, 2013. All of the mule deer were processed and the meat distributed to two local organizations to be used for human consumption. This process was clearly identified in the guidelines embedded in the Wildlife Permit provided by MFLNRO. All meat preparation was conducted by a qualified butcher and processed in a facility inspected and approved by both Interior Health and MFLNRO. The cull results indicate to staff that
the clover traps were placed in the best strategic locations possible to minimize the chances of capturing white-tail deer. The specific zones of the City to be targeted for the population reduction program were approved by resolution of Council, stemming from a recommendation from the Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee. That recommendation was based on complaints received by the City from the public in 2012 and the results of the urban deer population counts conducted in March and November 2012. The locations of the traps were determined by City staff and the contractor based this information along with complaints received and priority areas identified by the Conservation Officer Service in 2012. Four individuals/companies, who had previously approached the City of Cranbrook interested in conducting the cull program, were invited to submit a quote for service in early January 2013. Only two of the four individuals/companies submitted a quote by the deadline and the contract was awarded by a resolution of Council. Council had previously approved a budget of up to $15,000 for a deer cull in 2012. The final invoice has not yet been received from the contractor; however the program is expected to be within budget. The estimated cost per deer is approximately $625. Built into the cost of each deer includes: placement and tear down of each clover trap, purchase of bait and supplies, liability insurance, provincially mandated equipment training, mileage, vehicle cleaning; processing, packaging and distribution of the meat and all associated contractor administration costs. During the overnight hours of Tuesday February 19 into Wednesday February 20, 2013, staff was notified by the contractor(s) of deliberate vandalism to two clover traps located on a property owned by the City of Cranbrook. Alberta skiers flee into cold when fire hits Panorama

INVERMERE, B.C. — A team of young Edmonton-area skiers lost their clothing and equipment but escaped unharmed when a southeastern B.C. resort they were staying at was hit by fire. The group from the
Rabbit Hill Ski Club was staying at the main lodge of Panorama Mountain Village near Invermere when flames erupted early Wednesday morning. Three local fire departments managed to contain the blaze to the top floor of the five-storey structure and no one was hurt. Up to a dozen condo units were gutted and emergency officials say there was
heavy water damage to the lower floors. The ski team was preparing for the Under 16 CanAm Championships at Panorama this weekend. The group headed back to Edmonton and despite several offers of replacement equipment, the team says it will not be taking part in the races. (CHQR, Global Calgary)

Police seek Kootenay Music Awards return stolen snowmobile For the Bulletin

The Kimberley RCMP are seeking assistance from the public regarding the theft of a snow mobile that occurred sometime between 4:30 pm Monday February 25th and 10:00 am Tuesday February 26th. The 2009 Yamaha Phazer MTX snow mobile was chained up at the time and parked at the entrance to the Kimberley Underground Railway at 111 Gerry Sorensen Way in Kimberley. The sled is described as black and orange and is in need of several parts. Anyone with information with respect to this incident is being asked to contact the Kimberley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

The traps are owned by the MFLNRO and were loaned to the City of Cranbrook at no charge. The Cranbrook RCMP was notified and began an investigation. An RCMP member, City staff and the contractor attended the scene and photographs were taken as part of the investigation. The estimated cost of repairing the clover traps is $800. On the evening of Tuesday February 26, 2013, the contractor contacted City staff and the RCMP about a case of trespassing. At about 7:15pm, the contractor arrived at a trap site, located on private property, where an unidentified male was found videotaping a deer that had been captured in the trap. The contractor asked the male what he was doing and asked him to leave the property. There was no altercation between the two and the unidentified male left the property to the public sidewalk and continued to videotape. The contractor returned an hour later to remove the deer from the trap and found the same unidentified male on scene still videotaping. The contractor went about his work and then left the scene. The RCMP continues to investigate. “Going forward, we
look to work in partnership with the Province through MFLNRO, in conjunction with the Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee, to secure additional tools to help manage the urban deer population in Cranbrook,” says Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski. “Those tools could include, but is not limited to the opportunity to undertake hazing, translocation and/or fertility drugs. We will also be exploring setting up a fund to help pay for some of these alternative population control methods, assuming they are approved, as they will be expensive. This will hopefully include funding from the Province and by special interest groups. I look forward to beginning those discussions.”
Kootenay Music Awards are back for a second year of celebrating our homegrown talent. Sponsored by the Nelson Brewing Company, and Black Press, the awards are currently accepting nominations for artists in every genre of music — from punk rock to folk bands and electronic producers. There’s also awards for the year’s best artist, album and song. “If you’re making music in the Kootenays and you have an MP3 you can send us, we want to hear from you,” said Chad Hansen founder and president of the Kootenay Music Awards. A panel of music industry professionals will listen to every submission and shortlist the top four or five entries in each of the 10 categories. Then it will be up to the public to decide with their online votes which artists deserve the titles. The winners will be announced at an awards banquet at Nelson’s Spiritbar on May 10. Hansen said the contest provides incredible exposure for the shortlisted artists. “Last year, artists were getting 2,000 unique listens on the tracks up for awards,” he said. “It’s a really great opportunity for an upand-comer or established artists alike to get exposed to new audiences in all of the communities in the Kootenays.” Last year it was Fern-
ie’s Shred Kelly that went away with coveted title of Artist of the Year, while Nelson’s The Automation was named best new band. Hansen can’t wait to see who will enter the competition this year. “There’s so much musical talent in the Kootenays,” he said. “There’s great bands just jamming in their basements or playing for the dinner crowd at local restaurants — we want to dig out those hidden gems.” With the help of Black Press community papers, including the Kimberley Daily Bulletin, all the performers in the running for an award will be in the spotlight. “The reach of the awards has grown exponentially,” Hansen said. “We’ll be exposing people to artists from Golden to Grand Forks and all the communities in between.” To nominate yourself or someone else for a Kootenay Music Award, go to kootenaymusicawards.ca and click “nominate” in the page banner. How libraries blocked the FBI
I
t is called the ‘Library Awareness Program,’ and it remains one of the oddest things to come out of the 20th century. Although fairly benign sounding, the Library Awareness Program was a clandestine operation of the FBI—one which attempted to recruit librarians as ‘assets’ in their war against foreign subversives. Agents would simply approach anyone working at a library desk and ask if they had noticed any “suspicious looking foreigners,” and sometimes ask to see the library’s circulation records. There is so much wrong with this it is difficult to know where to start. First was the impossibility of determining foreigners from non-foreigners by sight, let alone just what constitutes suspicious looking activity. And second, the FBI was ill-prepared for the reaction of the library community, who battled with the FBI in the courts, the media, and in public, in— what CBS News called—“the unlikeliest fight of the year.” It began in early June of 1987, when two agents approached a clerk at Columbia University’s Mathematics and Science Library, asking him to “report on activities of foreigners” during his shifts. The clerk referred the agents to Paula Kaufman, the university’s head librarian. Kaufman informed the FBI that to help them would break one of the library profession’s most cherished ethics, not to mention breaking numerous privacy laws of the state. Librarians simply do not report the reading habits of their patrons to anyone. Ever. The agents were polite but wrote Kaufman off as a hysteric, one who felt what they were
doing was “atrocious… a violation of the First Amendment, etc.” What they didn’t expect was Kaufman to report her visit to the New York Times. An investigative exposé was published in September of 1987. Kaufman told the Times: “The FBI’s request to me to report on foreigners using our libraries is one with which I could not practically comply, even if our institution supported such cooperation, which is does not; even if MIKE’S such a request did not conBOOKNOTES travene my professional ethics, which it does; even Mike if it did not infringe upon Selby the First Amendment and privacy rights of all library patrons, which it does; and even if it does not violate the laws of the State of New York, which it does.” This predictably caused a ripple effect which no longer just outraged librarians, but civil rights and law organizations, educators, and privacy advocates. Documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act caused further anger, when it was learned that the FBI kept files on those librarians who refused to assist them, which turned out to be every librarian they approached. The entire operation was a sad throwback to McCarthyism and the archaic practices of J. Edgar Hoover. Yet the FBI remained not only committed to the program, but exasperated at the non-compliance of library personnel. “Why should librarians be off limits?” asked one operative, stunned librarians “weren’t cooperating with their own security forces.” The operative also expressed that without the librarians’ help, they left to “seek recruits only among pimps and
whores.” (Herbert Forestall, chief librarian at the University of Maryland, conceded that at least the FBI “distinguished librarians from pimps and ladies of the night.”) A Congressional hearing was soon called to investigate the Library Awareness Program. FBI assistant-director James Greer blamed “misunderstandings and misperceptions” by library staff which have blown things out of proportion. Greer was cut off by Congressman Don Edwards, who stated “I haven’t heard one word from the FBI to indicate that you have any appreciation for the special role of libraries in this society. The FBI should recognize that reading and books are special. Everybody in this country has a right to use libraries, and they have a right do so with confidentiality.” Greer continued to defend the program, stating: “In the 1970s, when we had this program, not one word was said about it. So I’ve got to assume that we did it properly and we got some information that was very helpful.” No one was more shocked than Congress to find out the Library Awareness Program had begun as far back as the ‘70s. President Bush formally requested the FBI to shut down the Library Awareness Program, but then director Sessions refused to do it. Libraries across America were left with only one choice—to draft crystal clear policies and procedures to protect their patrons should the FBI ever return. And the FBI did return en masse in 2001, with something called the ‘Patriot Act.’ Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at Cranbrook Public Library.

Hello. Look at our town, David, Prince of Wales. Glance to your right and say ‘Hello’ to our Mayor, Mr. Thomas Roberts. Nod benignly. Well done. Heaven’s, you’ve had some practice, haven’t you? “Now David, look back and to the left, past the railcars and the once grand Moir Park hill. There is our graveyard. Do you see it? People of our little town are buried there. It’s a little rundown. No matter. There were wild circus elephants trampling about that graveyard just last year. Don’t look for them now, they are gone. Look, look to the north. It is a man with a camera. Pause — smile. Wait! Don’t smile. Look somewhat ... somewhat ... look somewhat the way you do. Excellent. Yes, perfectly lovely. “Now, look to the east. Beyond the many townsfolk gathered in the parking lot hoping for a mere glimpse of you. Look across the dusty, rutted road, to the left of the weather beaten buildings of Chinatown, past the rooming house, even farther to the left, on this side of the Cranbrook Hotel. Look to where that other fellow to your right is looking. Not the man standing at attention with the other men standing at attention for they are looking at you.
They are soldiers, you can bet. And you do like the occasional wager, hey. Those men fought for your father although, sadly, some of them are dead. Not the ones standing at attention, of course, but the ones that are not here. They are mostly in other graveyards that are probably in better shape than ours but those are graveyards that have not been desecrated by rogue elephants. That is our cross to bear. “Do you see the building on the corner marked ‘Zenith Café?’ In fifteen years from now the amazing psychic Madame Jeannette will sit in that little café and read fortunes. She will not read yours because you will not be here and she cannot be here now but if she could, oh David, what a story. What a story, indeed. “Madame Jeanette would sit you down over a cup of tea and perhaps an additional drop of something more to fortify because you enjoy a little dram now and again, eh, David. She would grasp your palm and study the lines and proclaim that you will one day be King of all the English Empire but she will frown because she will also see you falling in love with the American divorcee Wallis Simpson and that will definitely be a problem. A big problem. An insurmountable problem. You cannot marry a divorcee – American or otherwise — and still be King David, the church won’t allow it nor will the people much care for it. You will give up the throne. Abdicate in the name of love. Pass it all onto the reluctant shoulders of your brother Albert, who will not only lead us through another war and sire our present Queen Elizabeth but will have a speech impediment that will

A hallmark, to be sure. “You will become the Duke of Windsor, so Madame Jeanette would accurately predict. You will be appointed Governor of the Bahamas. Governor, David. Rather colonial and not quite the profile of a King but certainly worth a mention. So, too, there was that nasty business of the murder of rich Bahaman resident Harry Oakes in 1943 and the accusations that you may have been involved in a cover-up. “Sadly, David, if life was a copy-book yours would contain a few blots, eh? And then David, then all those years of retirement in France with your wife and those sweet little dogs. And then, to top it all off, in 1972, you will die, David, fourteen years before your wife, although quite possibly outliving
the mysterious Madame Jeanette, of whose later years we know little. “Now, David, this next bit is a little tricky. Look over beyond the photograph that you are in and all the way over to the other photograph on this page. Do you see it, David? That is a photo of where you once stood. That is what it looks like now. The platform is gone, the old station is gone, the people are gone, and you, David, Prince of Wales, you are gone too. Some of the best sports action last weekend in B.C. took place in Cranbrook, with the hosting of the Pacwest Provincial Volleyball Championships at the College of the Rockies. The six best men’s teams and six best women’s teams in the province duked it out for top honours before appreciative crowds Thursday through Saturday. “We had spectacular crowds all weekend,” said Cori Andrichuk, Manager of Campus Life and Athletics for the College of the Rockies, adding that final attendence figures aren’t in. “But we filled the stands completely on Thursday night for both the women’s match and the men’s match, and the same thing for Saturday night for the 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. matches. “So we were probably upwards of 350, or 400 people, just for those matches alone.” The home squad — the College of the Rockies Avalanche — lost the quarter final match-up in a thriller to the eventual tournament victors, the Capilano University Blues, who at number four seed going ended up as upset champions. “It was a really good league this year,” Andrichuk said. “There was definitely a division between the top two teams and the bottom four teams,
but those bottom four teams were so close in the standings that it could have gone any direction — and it certainly did on the men’s side. “The boys (COTR Avs) had their opportunity, and unfortunately it just didn’t fall their way.” But COTR, the Pacwest league and the community all feel is was a great weekend of volleyball. “The community came on board, our sponsors came on board, and the atmosphere at the championships themselves was palpable,” Andrichuk said. “You could feel how excited people were. And I think there’s a better awareness that volleyball is an amazing spectator sport. I think it goes unnoticed a lot of the time, but there was some exceptional quality volleyball out there, and the people who saw the Friday match were treated to something you don’t see very often. “We’ve got nothing but positive comments from the travelling officials to the travelling teams to the Pacwest officials themselves who were in attendence.” As mentioned, the Capilano University Blues won the Men’s side, defeating the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Columbia Bible College Bearcats to win the Women’s championships.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I was just 18 years old when a routine doctor’s visit exposed off-thechart high blood pressure and landed me in the emergency room. As a carefree teen in my first year of college, I felt healthy and assumed it couldn’t possibly be anything more than a little stress. Even the ER doctor took a look at me and said he was sure there couldn’t be anything wrong. Imagine the shock when the blood tests showed I had stage-four kidney disease. I was dangerously close to needing dialysis or a kidney transplant, but I had no clue that I’d been suffering from a silent killer. Kidney disease often goes undetected because symptoms may not appear until the kidneys are actually failing. One in three American adults is at risk due to high blood pressure or diabetes, two of the leading causes. The good news is that early detection and proper treatment can slow the progress. My battle with kidney disease has turned me into a fitness guru and an advocate for kidney patients. I now do something active every day. By following a careful diet and working closely with my doctors to manage my high blood pressure, I have been able to prevent further damage. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and positive attitude can affect your medical prognosis in the best possible way. I can attest to it. Will you please encourage your readers to get their kidneys checked? March is National Kidney Month and March 14th is World Kidney Day. The National Kidney Foundation is urging Americans to learn about risk factors and get their kidneys checked with a simple urine and blood test. Dear Annie: Now that I’m part of the over50 crowd, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to read the expiration dates on goods, even with my reading glasses on. Particularly troublesome are the expiration dates that are at the bottom of a white box where the numbers are indented and also in white. The manufacturers would do us baby boomers a great favor by marking the expiration dates in an easy-to-read location, preferably in black ink with larger letters and numbers. Obituaries William Ewart Graham “Bill� 1925 - 2013 Bill Graham of Cranbrook, BC passed away peacefully on Monday, February 25, 2013.
Bill was born on the family farm near Bateman, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1925. He was an avid card player to the end, winning 2 hands of crib shortly before peacefully passing away. Bill retired as an Engineer from the CPR in 1985 and has since enjoyed 28 years of travelling, golfing, curling, and spending time with family and friends. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife Alice, in 1997 and his daughter Alice, in 1953. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message.
