High-flying message More than 170 balloons, each carrying a hand-written anti-bullying message from each Voyageur elementary school student and teacher were launched (from 50-foot tethered ribbons) on Wednesday in honour of Pink Shirt Day. The balloons remained floating over the school for the entire day as a reminder to students, teachers and the neighbourhood that bullying won’t be tolerated. Organizers said they chose a balloon launch because every student could participate and liked the visual effect. The entire school witnessed each teacher launching her classroom’s balloons. The B.C. Liberals tabled what they call a disciplined budget, forecasted to bring a surplus with a combination of tax hikes and limited pre-election goodies. With the debt projected to come in at $1.2 billion for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the Liberals are hoping to leave the red ink behind, with successively growing surpluses forecasted over the three years of the fiscal plan. Bob Simpson, Independent MLA for Cariboo North, said the budget is hard to take seriously as it’s coming before an election. “If it is the Liberal’s platform, which is what we have to treat it as, then there are some interesting things in there. It’s an admission that we have a revenue problem in British Columbia, because, in order to balance the budget, they couldn’t make any more cuts, they had to increase corporate taxes and in the upper income bracket and raise Medical Services Plan (MSP),” Simpson said. Liberal candidate Coralee Oakes is happy with her party’s budget, calling it prudent and disciplined and lauding the Liberal government for the “tough decisions” they’ve made to support the economy. “It is a budget about the future of our province and sends an important message that we will not spend money we do not have and we will not leave a legacy of needless debt,” Oakes said. Duncan Barnett, NDP candidate for Cariboo North, said the budget is not as balanced as the Liberals make it sound. “It’s based on overestimating revenues, underfunding ministries and program areas that deliver front-line services to British Columbians and questionable onetime asset sales,” Barnett said. Simpson agrees that the budget is far from balanced, pointing out that it doesn’t have enough room to absorb a fire season. The budget includes an increase in both

personal and corporate income taxes. The tax hikes roll out beginning this year, with the general corporate income tax moving up one percentage point to 11 per cent in April. Next year, in January, individuals earning more than $150,000 a year face a temporary two-year 2.1 per cent tax increase. Medical Services Plan premiums will also increase, getting a four per cent bump come next January. “The increase in MSP premiums was one of those tough decisions that had to be made in order for us to be able to increase Health Care by $2.4 billion over three years,” Oakes said. The MSP she pointed out, is not paid by lower income families, with more than 800,000 people in B.C. not paying full MSP. It is also important to note that more than 800,000 people in BC don’t pay full MPS premiums. For a family earning $60,000 MSP premiums will go up $5 month. Oakes added, the governing Liberals have been able to keep B.C. with the lowest personal income taxes in Canada for individuals earning up to $122,000 a year. Both Barnett and Simpson see the raise of the MSP as an increase in what is called a regressive tax. “Increases in hidden taxes like the Medical Services Premium place an unfair burden on many families,” Barnett said. Simpson agrees with Barnett, pointing out that the government has increased the the MSP many times already. “I believe the NDP can do a better job of serving British Columbians. “We need to be investing in our people and all of our resource industries,” Barnett said. “Our fully-costed platform will show how we will restore balance and make changes for the better, one practical step at a time.” Simpson has tabled a bill to change the date of the fixed election to stop the use of budgets as election promises.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Buy Local is movement that's hard not to see these days. Starting back in 2005, the authors of the 100 Mile Diet, Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon started their articles in The Tyee about eating locally, that turned into a book deal and then a movement. It’s a big enough movement now that even the provincial government is getting in on it, creating a fund, called Buy Local, to encourage buyers to keep it in province. The latest investment was $15,500 matched funds to the B.C. Chicken Growers’ Association for them to produce a short movie, along with some literature, to promote B.C. chicken and dispel myths about provincial growers. Dave Wall, a local farmer and chicken raiser, has run up against a variety of misconceptions about how chickens are raised in B.C. including the myths

targeted by the association. “There’s a lot of misconceptions about that and if you can get something out to the public that can alleviate some of those concerns or misconceptions, then it’s a good thing,” he said. B.C. Chicken Growers’ Association president, Ravi Bathe was happy with the announcement. “The B.C. Chicken Growers’ Association is grateful for the support from the B.C. government under the Buy Local program. This project will showcase our B.C. family-operated chicken farms and promote the fact we raise the highestquality chicken in the world without the use of hormones or growth promotants. B.C. chicken
is a healthy food choice and a very good protein source,” he said. The Minister of Agriculture, Norm Letnick, looks forward to showing the province the quality of provincially grown chicken. "Our hard working B.C. chicken farmers are located throughout the province and their high-quality product is consistently in the top five commodities in terms of farms sales each year in B.C. I congratulate the B.C. Chicken Growers' Association on receiving this funding and look forward to seeing the video when it is finished, as they have a great story to tell," he said. Forest Act amendments introduced Proposals based on extensive input from public
Forest Act amendments introduced recently will help improve forest stewardship and support community resiliency in mountain pine beetle impacted areas. The legislation fulfils recommendations made by the Special Committee on Timber Supply in their August 2012 report, which was based on public hearings and written submissions from First Nations, local communities, industry stakeholders and the public. The legislation proposes a new section, 34.1, be added to the Forest Act that will create the ability to convert volume-based forest licences to areabased tree farm licences at the minister’s invitation. Invitations will be publicly advertised and applicants must make their application
CNC votes to raise tuition costs The College of New Caledonia’s Board of Governors voted in favour of raising tuition by up to two per cent this fall during its regularly scheduled meeting Friday. The move is predicted to generate about $100,000, depending on enrolment and final approval by the government. “It will help, but we still have some work to do to submit a balanced budget,” CNC President John Bowman said. The college is working to resolve a predicted $1 million budget shortfall for the 2013/14 fiscal year, due to rising costs and overall funding that has not kept pace. The board heard preliminary options for dealing with the projected shortfall. Final 2013/14 operating budget approval will occur at the board meeting April 26.
for an area-based licence available for public review and comment for at least 60 days and indicate how they have incorporated public feedback before submitting to the minister. “The legislation introduced today is a milestone and meets key commitments in our Mid-Term Timber Supply Action Plan,” Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister, Steve Thomson said. “We are creating the conditions needed to help B.C.’s Interior weather the impacts of the mountain pine beetle infestation.” The minister may reject an application if the best interests of the public are not met. 0This summer, the ministry will consult with the public on the evaluation criteria and use the results
to refine policy before the first application for a conversion to an area-based tenure occurs. Supporting area-based tenures has a number of benefits, such as creating an incentive for licence holders to make enhanced silviculture and infrastructure investments that will improve the midterm timber supply. As with other forms of forest licences on Crown land, public consultations on forest stewardship plans and timber supply reviews are required on any new area-based tenures. Another important legislative amendment will create a supplemental forest licence, which ensures wood fibre can be obtained for bioenergy, pellet producers and secondary manufacturers by providing greater fibre security for
licence holders. The legislation will also create the ability to establish sustainable maximum harvest limits on the amount of low-grade timber credited to a nonsawlog facility. This will ensure access to low-quality timber but prevent overharvesting. A number of related and consequential amendments are also included in the legislation, such as creating regulationmaking powers. Oct. 9, 2012, the province announced the Mid-Term Timber Supply Action Plan, consisting of nine sustained and 11 new actions. To facilitate implementation of the action plan, the province committed to introducing supporting legislation at the earliest possible opportunity.

HST: It’s Finally Over The PST legislation passed without fanfare in the Legislature this week, bringing an end to the four-year long HST debacle. It happened without the NDP calling a standing vote to rub salt in the wounds of Liberal MLAs who were compelled to defend and repeatedly vote for a tax their party had promised wasn’t in the cards during the 2009 election. The HST saga should make it crystal clear that the overwhelming majority of party MLAs and candidates running in an election don’t have a clue what their leadership has in store for them should they form government. Election platforms and pre-election budgets aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. We’ve seen it time and time again, with the NDP’s so-called “fudge-it budgets” after the 1996 election; with Premier Campbell’s sale of BC Rail after the 2001 contest; and with the HST and ballooning deficit after the 2009 election. At a minimum, future fixed election dates must be moved to the fall to avoid this mess, so election year budgets can be fully debated and scrutinized. I have legislation before the House that could make this change for 2017; all it needs is Liberal support to be enacted this session. Fortunately, the HST debacle shows that voters can hold their government to account between elections if they are motivated and organized enough to use the referendum and initiative legislation effectively. Hopefully people will consider using this democratic tool more often. I’d like to see it used to force political parties to take big money out of politics by banning corporate and union donations. The Liberals’ rationalization of HST also proves we should never listen to politicians who use economic fear mongering to justify their tax or social policies. We were told PST is a job and investment killer, and that if we didn’t keep the HST, BC’s economy would be unproductive and uncompetitive. Funny that the provincial budget tabled a few weeks ago projects none of the job and investment-killing effects the Liberals said we’d experience if we returned to the PST. Now that the HST is behind us, let’s hope the government starts actively assisting the 100,000 businesses (out of 130,000) that have yet to register to start collecting the PST as of April 1st. Some of the millions of dollars of taxpayer money being spent on partisan ads could have been put to much better use by making the transition back to PST as painless as possible. www.bobsimpsonmla.ca

Steering wheel or spare tire?
W
e spend quite a bit of time on the road and I love to read the clever signs that people post for their town or business. Keith and I chuckled for miles after we read this sign on entering a small town in western Montana: “Population: 345 real nice folks, and 2 old soreheads.” Then Houston, B.C. had this clever safety reminder: “Hospitals—0 Cemeteries—1: Please slow down!” As far as church signs go, I see some pretty serioussounding ones that make God seem forbidding and even unfriendly. But my acquaintance with our Creator confirms that He is not arbitrary, unforgiving, severe, or unfriendly. In fact, He is quite the opposite. And on that note, I rather like this church sign that we saw one day while driving to Terrace: “Is God your steering wheel or your spare tire?” The contrast in this question points to a distinct difference – one item is essential, the
Peggy Corbett Seventh-day Adventist Church other merely (and, yes, very) convenient. I have a friend who loves God and very often talks about how we need “to be ready” for Jesus’ return. He also talks of “working hard” so that Jesus can come even sooner. While I do not question or judge his sincerity, I am often sorry to see that he is not very happy. I share the following story that suggests, I believe, a truer understanding of how God intends us to live. As the story goes, Francis of Assisi was approached by one of his parishioners as he was hoeing in the garden. “Brother Francis,” the man asked, “what would you do if
you knew that the Lord would be returning tomorrow?” The wise old churchman leaned for a moment on his hoe and then spoke with assurance, “I do believe,” he said, “that I would finish hoeing my garden.” Jesus pointedly refused to tell His disciples the time when He would return, because He didn’t want that to be the reason for their obedience. He didn’t want them keeping an eye on the calendar rather than on Him. He wanted them to be moved by love for Him and the magnificence of His ways. And since we tend to live our lives in the pattern of those we worship and admire, the key to “being ready” would be to know Him. Jesus said: “Hold yourselves ready. . .because the Son of Man will come at the time you least expect him.” (Matt. 24:44 NEB) That sounds like good advice for steady steering. Peggy Corbett is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Quesnel.

Trouble with words
F
or folks who must rely on words as their stock and trade, politicians sure seem to be having trouble with them these days. Consider this example. Apparently, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is worried about folks who are cheating and collecting employment insurance when they shouldn’t be. Sort of like getting a housing allowance when you don’t really live there, but I digress. To combat this, his government (it is his, remember, not ours) is dispatching minions throughout the land to find these ne’er-do-wells and bring them to justice — and, in the process, each will recoup about $500,000 in illegally obtained EI monies from them. But, that figure is not a quota, according to federal Human Resources Minister Diane Finley. It’s a target. “There were no quotas for individuals,” Findley told reporters at Le Devoir newspaper in Montreal. “There are objectives, targets, to be sure.” Maybe my sense of logic is different than the good minister’s, but I’ve always thought a quota is a goal that people are given to try to meet — kind of like a target. I’ve checked some dictionaries and most define quota, among other descriptors, as an allotment, an assignment, a chunk, a measure and a part — words that could also be used to describe a target within the context of an amount of money they all have to come up with to keep the government happy. Another example, still with Harper, earlier this month, he defended Sen. Pamela Wallin’s travel expenses — $142,190.26 from March 1, 2011, to Feb. 29, 2012 — as reasonable, even though only $10,551.99 was itemized as actual travel between Ottawa and Saskatchewan, the province she represents in the Senate. The rest — $131,638.27 — was listed on her expense sheets under the category of “other.” That’s a whole lot of other and sure doesn’t fit with what my definition of “other” would be. –Dale Bass, Kamloops This Week
M
What’s in a name?
y nine-year-old daughter came home last week and said we needed to buy a baby gift for a teacher at her school. “His name is Ikea,” Daisy said excitedly. “Whose name is Ikea?” I asked, not knowing if she was referring to the teacher or the infant. “Mr. Verstraete’s baby,” she said. “He’s a boy!” “Ikea?” I asked. “Are you sure his name’s Ikea?” “Yes, of course,” she responded, as though I was nuts for asking. But I guess anything goes nowadays when it comes to names. I shouldn’t have been surprised about a child sharing the same moniker as a Swedish store, particularly after reading in the news that someone named their baby Hashtag, inspired by a commonly-used social media symbol. And who am I to judge? Once upon a time I was considered weird for the name I had chosen for my firstborn. “Buster is a dog’s name,” I was scolded countless times during my pregnancy when I made the mistake of sharing the name I’d picked out. So what, I thought.
Lori Welbourne
On A Brighter Note It was also the name of a famous actor and an even more famous shoe. I absolutely loved the name Buster. It was fun and strong and it had character. I wasn’t about to let the opinions of others change my mind. Except there was one opinion that kind of mattered: that of Buster’s dear old dad. “Let’s think of a few other options and pick one once he’s born,” Paul reasoned. Fine, I thought. He’ll fall in love with the name by then for sure. But when our beautiful baby boy arrived with his spiky, blonde hair he didn’t look like a Buster to either of us. He looked like a Sam, so that’s what we called him. “Buster would have been fine,” my friend, who’s a teacher, said about my original choice. “It’s all the
With websites out there dedicated to listing all the strange names that babies are getting saddled with these days, it’s easy to see that this trend is growing. Am I complaining? Nah. Why not get creative and unique when naming our offspring? This certainly can’t be worse than giving them a name that they share with three other kids in the class. Naming our children is a big responsibility and everyone’s not going to like what we choose. But as long as we’re picking names we truly love and not just making up stuff so we can laugh at how hilarious we are, we should be okay. If the kid ends up hating their name, which some do, “normal” or not, they can always legally change it to something else later. Ikea might do that. Except, his name’s not actually Ikea. Turns out it’s Atticus. I guess I’ll be returning my gift of an Ikea train set and getting him a copy of “To Kill a Mockingbird” instead. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. purposely misspelled and hard-to-pronounce names that drive me crazy.” Like Quvenzhane? My daughter and I recently saw the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild with Quvenzhane Wallis, the youngest Oscar-nominated actor in history and we immediately nicknamed her Q. It just seemed easier. If anyone’s to blame for names getting stranger and more unique as the years go by, let’s blame the celebrities. I mean, really - who was naming their kids anything all that bizarre before Frank Zappa introduced his children Dweezil, Moon Unit, Ahmet and Diva Thin Muffin to the world? At the time, people were horrified. Since then, many celebrities have followed suit and it’s become the norm in Hollywood. Names like Alcamy, Apple, Banjo, Bingham, Blue Angel, Blue Ivy, Destry, Exton, Fifi Trixibelle, Jermajesty, KalEl, Kyd, Maddox, Memphis Eve, Moses, Ocean, Pilot Inspektor, Rocket, Rumer, Seargeoh and the list goes on. Heck, actor Rob Morrow named his child Tu. How would you like to have the name Tu Morrow?

New Veterans Charter certainly not satisfactory
Editor: The Canadian Forces Members and Veterans Re-establishment and Compensation Act, referred to as the New Veterans Charter (NVC) effective 2006, replaced the Old Pension Act. All parties in the House of Commons passed the legislation with barely any discussion. Soldiers who joined the military prior to 2006 were protected under the Old Pension Act. After NVC implementation these soldiers arbitrarily became subject to the NVC and its limitations, without grandfather clause or consultation. This was unforgivable, considering that Canada was at war with Afghanistan. A 2011 Queen’s University study concluded that the Old Pension Act provides up to 40 per cent more financial benefit than does the NVC. With the exception of the disability award and permanent impairment allowance provided to totally disabled veterans, financial benefits under the NVC are subject to taxation, clawback and end at age 65. Benefits under the Old Pension Act were non-taxable, paid for life. Government misrepresented the benefits of the NVC. Canadians were told a seriously wounded veteran would receive up to a $285,000 disability award. A few dozen received such amounts. Typical awards are barely enough to keep the wounded veteran and his family alive for a year. The disability award amounts are calculated
Letters to the Editor
arbitrarily using the NVC “Table of Disabilities.” Many body parts listed on the table are worth 0. The earnings loss benefit, providing up to 75 per cent of the soldier’s salary, is misrepresented and discriminatory. It is based on pre-release salary, therefore less for a soldier of lower rank and discontinued after rehabilitation unless the disabled veteran is totally and permanently incapacitated and unable to work at any task, in contrast to the Old Pension Act, where wounded veterans continue to receive the same benefit regardless of rank or salary. The NVC discriminated against Reservists. A seriously hurt or disabled Reservist will only receive some 50 – 60 per cent compensation a regular force soldier might receive under similar circumstances. Included in misrepresentation are programs like “Helmets to Hardhats.” While commendable, this training is only provided to healthy, fit soldiers who want to work in construction industries. No efforts are made to assist veterans who are interested in a business career. Government members, when asked how a recently released injured veteran could effectively put their disability award to work, replied, “They can invest the amount of their award or start a business.” This comment can’t be taken seriously, unless the disabled veteran has access to sufficient financial resources to start a business or join a company as a
junior executive. Programs like “Boots to Suits” should be immediately implemented by Veterans Affairs Canada. Recent research by the Royal Canadian Legion, The National Council of Veteran Associations, The Equitas Society, Veterans Affairs, Canada’s own advisory committees, the Office of the Veterans Ombudsman and others have confirmed, since 2006, of approximately 250 recommendations made for improvement to the NVC, only about 90 of these recommendations have been partially implemented. This foot dragging by government is unconscionable, considering that the NVC was intended to be a “living document”, where improvements like Bill C-55 would be implemented as recommended. Since the announcement of 233 layoffs in the Department of Veteran’s Affairs the closure of eight regional offices, Veterans are now expected to get help from Service Canada offices, whose staff will know little or nothing about administering the NVC. Canadians volunteer to serve in Canada’s Military with the understanding if wounded or injured while on active duty the Canadian Government will adequately care for that soldier and his or her family. The key word is adequately. It is clear that the New Veterans Charter is a completely unsatisfactory document. Tex Leugner Cochrane, Alberta

Mayor awarded Diamond Jubilee medal Nominated by Federation of Canadian Municipalities
Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom is the latest proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. She was presented with the medal at a special ceremony this morning at City Hall. Sjostrom was nominated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for her “exemplary efforts to make your community a great place to live.” FCM Executive member and Prince George City Coun. Garth Frizzell was on hand to present the medal. “I am honoured to be recognized by my peers in local government from across the country,” said Sjostrom. “I haven’t been involved in community work to receive awards. I truly love Quesnel and believe that strong, welcoming and vibrant communities are built by people who share a common vision and are willing to work together to make things happen. But to receive an award of this nature is humbling and I am very thankful to the FCM for nominating me.” Sjostrom has been involved in the community since moving to Quesnel in 1980. She was a Director on the Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce Board, a founding member of the Sunrise

2000 Rotary Club and is a member of the Quesnel Rotary Club. She has chaired the local fundraising dinner for the Pacific Salmon Foundation for seven years, and has helped raise awareness and funds for many other
causes. In 1999, Sjostrom was elected to City Council, where she served three terms before being elected Mayor in 2008. During her time on Council, she has worked on the executives of both the
North Central Local government Association and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, eventually acting as presidents in both organizations. She has been selected by the provincial government to sit on various boards and advisory bodies, including BC Transit, the Minister’s Council on Employment and Accessibility and many others. Sjostrom was also: the Chair of the local Communities in Bloom committee, leading to a national first-place finish in 2007; the Host Chair of the 2000 Winter Games organizing team; and the Chair of the Quesnel Spirit of BC Committee working on the 2010 Winter Olympic activities in the community, including the Olympic Torch Relay. In addition, she is serving as a Community Ambassador of the 2015 Canada Winter Games. The commemorative medal marks the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. Some 60,000 Canadians will receive it in honour of their significant contributions and achievements.

Sparks and Brownies celebrate famous women
How Can I Stay on Track for Retirement? Living paycheque to paycheque? Unexpected expenses regularly throwing your retirement savings goals off-track? This is a good time to schedule a financial planning checkup with a financial advisor.
First Quesnel Sparks and Third Quesnel Brownies held a five famous Women Sleepover on Feb. 22. The girls enjoyed dressing in their finest and making hats, then having tea and dessert with campfire songs. They also worked on the five famous women, learning about the history of the women, then on to the birthday badge, where they sang happy birthday to Lord and Lady Baden Powell, their math badge and they also put on a play with girl guide puppets. Everyone enjoyed the sleepover, closing the evening with flashlight tag. Clockwise from near left: Kaitlyn Petrie; Bailey Humbird; Shania McCrae.
The key to staying on track for retirement is having a plan. And, contrary to what you may think, developing a pro-active plan is just as important (perhaps more) when money is tight than when it’s not. A good wealth-building plan is one that not only structures investments positioned for growth but also engages in sound financial planning that takes into account your current income and likely future needs.

Whether you are just starting out in your career or nearing retirement age, a proactive financial plan needs to be created, monitored and maintained to help you develop the consistency and discipline needed to achieve your financial goals. So, how can a plan get you back on-track?

Beaver Dam Battle Raging; Beavers Hold the Edge
“A special assessment to raise money for future flood control, and an appeal to Quesnel for help In ridding Dragon Lake of the beaver dam danger, was approved Saturday night by the Board of Trustees of the Dragon Lake Improvement District at their annual meeting held in Dragon Lake Community Hall. Approval of the two new measures to carry on with the endless battle of the beaver dams on Dragon Creek came as a result of a motion by Dr. E.F. Word, member of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Word said the board should sent a Letter clarifying the situation to Town Clerk Fred Adcock. “I think we should tell the Town we envision trouble with the beavers in the future.” Families of beavers diligently constructing dams on Dragon Creek in 1962 caused the level to rise above 95 feet ( the level set by the controller of water rights), and then flowed over the control gates flooding Johnston Flat and other property.” This Column is to highlight our 50th Anniversary

First, working with a professional financial advisor will enable you to assess where you are today, financially speaking. Many investors think they can do this on their own, but, unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Reviewing your current financial position with an advisor will help uncover any gaps and issues. Important questions include: What are my current assets, including my investments and home? • How much do I owe? • What are my current monthly expenses? • How much am I saving each month? • Do I have the appropriate amount of insurance? Next, your advisor and you will talk about your future financial needs, including how much money you may need in retirement. Your plan may also involve developing strategies to improve your savings outlook and uncover any untapped opportunities, such as: • Catching up on unused RRSP room • Taking advantage of income splitting with a lower-earning spouse • Maximizing TFSA contributions • Moving non-registered investments to a TFSA • Adjusting your asset allocation or investment mix in accordance with risk tolerance Most importantly, remember that a financial advisor is there to help you, and not to judge what you have or haven’t accomplished financially. To create your own customized investment strategy, speak with a financial advisor and start taking some small steps to greater savings toward your retirement or other life goals. Under a clear bright sky, young skiers gathered at Troll Mountain Resort to compete in a variety of downhill events on the first weekend of the month. Lightning Creek Ski Club and parents worked hard to host a very successful second annual weekend of ski races. Skiers from age four – 12 years old, from Williams Lake, Prince George and Quesnel, took on the double slalom, ski cross, moguls, a jump competition and a speed trap. “It was a great opportunity for the kids to have a racing experience and I’m very
impressed with the results of the Lightning Creek Ski Club at the race,” coach Dianne Dagneau said. Craig Delwisch, the Lightning Ski Club president, was happy with the support from volunteers, sponsors and the hill itself. "We had phenomenal sponsorship from the community and even from Prince George and Williams Lake. Every kid there received a good door prize," he said. Troll mountain, he added, pulled out all the stops to accommodate them, including building a ski cross track for the event. "The amount Troll does for us is great," Delwisch said.
The ski jump and speed trap were non-competitive, with the longest jump at 55 ft. and the highest speed at 80 km/h, with one of the young skiers tying her coach for the honour. Former World Cup competitor and sometime local, Brian Bennett was on hand to encourage the skiers and give them tips on competing and skiing. The hill was full, with 89 skiers there to take on their Cariboo rivals and more than fifty volunteers there to help put on the show. The team is next in action in Kamloops, March 22-23, with 50 skiers attending the panB.C. event.

Curling: The next generation
The curling going on Sunday at the curling club was of a type that experienced curlers might not have recognized, but young curlers and their parents had a blast. At the youth year-end curling bonspiel, young curlers, with parents and siblings in tow, played a distinctive version of the game they love. First came the curling, with a wildly diverse array of skills on show, from curlers who had never set foot on a curling sheet to young curlers who had been honing their craft for some time. At the completion of an end, rocks were scattered from hotline to hack, with a few even making it
into the house. At the end of the game, teams opened up envelopes, in which scoring was explained. Inside slips of paper would read: 'only rocks on the left side count' or some other variation of scoring guideline. For some teams it was a boon, giving scores to the peppering of rocks, to others, with rocks around the button, it was a bane, with some teams bemoaning their skill at putting the rock in the house and thus finding it not counted. But to everyone on the ice, the game was lots of fun. The program ran for 13 weeks, with 26 curlers, aged seven to 12.

Shooting indoors Herds of mannequin-still ‘animals’ gathered at Gamache’s arena, in front of groups of bowand-arrow armed archers last weekend. Why the styrofoam animals gathered is anyone’s guess, but the archers were there for fun, socializing and target practice. "People come for the camaraderie, just to get out and have some of the winter blues blown off," the organizer of the event, George Walker said. He said the indoor event was something of a warm up, with the outdoor event, which takes place later on in the summer, being the big draw. People inside the arena were

enjoying the gathering after a winter of being stuck at home. Archers and watchers bunched together talking and laughing, while lines of archers stood, formed and reformed at the shooting line, aiming at all manner of styrofoam critters, from moose to bears to oversized cobras. The event even had scaffolding to shoot from to add a bit of elevated spice to the proceedings. The critters stood randomly about the area, with the farthest ranging out to 49 yards away from the line of shooters, with an array much closer for the younger shooters or those with traditional bows. Archers from Prince George, Williams Lake and Quesnel came out to take part in the event, adding up to 79 in total.

Enjoy this Mexican party potato salad Often at a loss for what to bring to a potluck that’s a little different but still appealing to a cross-section of people? Try this unique potato salad that draws on the flavourful Mexican cuisine. Canned cream-style corn gives this potato salad a delectable creaminess, without the usual mayonnaise. Perfect for potlucks. Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes 3 lb (1.5 kg) Yukon Gold potatoes, scrubbed and cut in ¾ (2 cm) cubes 1 can (540 mL) black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup (250 mL) diced red onion 1 ½ cups [s (375 mL) diced sweet red pepper ¾ cup (175 mL) finely chopped green onion ¾ cup (175 mL) chopped fresh coriander
1 can (398 mL) cream-style corn Quarter jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (optional) 3 tbsp (45 mL) fresh lime juice ½ tsp (2 mL) salt Bring large saucepan of water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add potatoes; once water returns to boil, reduce heat to medium. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes or until tender. Drain; transfer to baking sheet to cool completely. Meanwhile, in extra large bowl combine black beans, red onion, red pepper, green onion, coriander, corn, jalapeno (if using), lime juice and salt. Add cooled potatoes; toss to combine. Makes 10 servings. This salad can be made and refrigerated one day ahead. For added flavour, top with your choice of shredded cheese. – newscanada
Hearty grain and quinoa salad Edamame, grains and cheese ensure this unusual and refreshing salad has a main course level of protein. Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes 1 cup (250 mL) frozen edamame 1 cup (250 mL) frozen corn 1 pkg (250 g) whole grain brown rice with lentils and quinoa blend 1 shallot, minced 3 tbsp (45 mL) fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp (15 mL) omega oil ¼ tsp. (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper 1 cup (250 mL) cherry tomatoes, halved 1/3 cup (75 mL) drained and crumbled light feta cheese in brine Bring medium saucepan of water to a boil. Add edamame and corn. Reduce heat to medium; simmer 3 to 4 minutes. Drain; set aside to
