2013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE ACCA CO-OPERATIVE YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Goldeye Centre near Nordegg, AB • Ph: (780) 991-4620 • www.acca.coop Summer camp is a time for making new friends and is the place where youth discover their hidden talents. Those who have attended the ACCA Co-operative Youth Leadership Program, (now going into their 54th year) will tell you that it was one of their most memorable and life-changing experiences. Held at Goldeye Centre near Nordegg, the serene foothills location provides a beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains. We aim to develop leadership skills and self-confidence in youth so they can return to their communities and get involved. Every summer, youth learn how to work in committees, elect their own government and learn how to set up and run a co-operative business. They also develop communication and public speaking skills and expand their knowledge of the agriculture industry and the benefits of membership in co-operatives. Summer camps – making the best choice for your child BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express When summer arrives and school is out, youngsters have the time to check out other ways to fill their days and that can include a variety of camp options. According to the Alberta Camping Association of Alberta (ACA), Central Alberta includes all kinds of summer camps, geared towards those with a passion for dance, a penchant for horseback riding or those who want to spend time learning about the Bible while still enjoying a host of recreational opportunities. There are also special needs camps and City day camps as well. Camps can be found in all kinds of attractive places as well, from locations near Sylvan Lake to the foothills around Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg. According to the ACA, there are steps to choosing a perfect camp for your child. Explore the information available through the Association’s web site. The ACA offers a camper’s worksheet that is helpful in making sure both parent and child are satisfied with the camp selection. There is also a tab called ‘find a camp’ which lists areas of interest. There is also an accreditation checklist which covers topics from camp leadership credentials and leaders’ training and orientation to things to consider when it comes to a camp’s site, facilities and equipment and protocol when it comes to camp health care, medical services and first aid. Another issue tackled on the ACA web site relates to concerns over homesickness.
According to the ACA, many campers feel a sense of missing home at some point during their stay, but most homesickness is overcome after the first few days. There are many tips on how to prepare your child for the camp experience and avoid homesickness. These include telling kids what they will expect when they get to camp, involving the child in selecting the camp and sparking interest in children about the activities available at camp before going to camp is a good idea as well. Also, if a child is prone to homesickness, picking a camp that is shorter in length is essential. Some camps, for example Cub Scouts, are two nights long. According to the ACA, most of the time, campers just need someone to sit with and talk to about how they are feeling. As for what not to do, the ACA recommends avoiding making comments about your own anxiety such as ‘I hope you’ll be okay’ or ‘What will I do without you’. They should also not say “Call me and I will pick you up” and if they do, they need to be prepared to do so. With those concerns considered, parents should know that once they register with the camp of their choice they should have regular contact from that point on, receiving “A warm welcome or confirmation package, including confirmation of dates, prices, equipment needed, cancellation policies, and other necessary camp information.” For more about all things related to the summer camp experience, check out www. albertacamping.com. editor@reddeerexpress.com

First it is essential for the parents to understand whether they are intending to move to a day or an overnight camp. Day camps offer the activities to the kids which are spread throughout the day and in the
to teach children based on different and interesting strategies. It teaches the kids from a different perspective than the usual medium of classroom teaching. These camps have proven to be really beneficial to the kids from the curriculum point of view and kids enjoy these camps though they have an educational motive hidden in them.

DAY CAMPS OR DAY AND NIGHT CAMPS
night the children can get back home. On the other hand, overnight camps are camps wherein the kids would stay at the camps throughout the day as well as in the night. It would be preferable to send the kids for the first time to a day camp so that they could be aware of the camp environment and then the second or the third time when the kids go they can go overnight. Hence it is essential that the kids are sent to an overnight camp only once they are aware about the basics of the camp life.
DAY CAMPS
One of the most exciting parts of our childhood is summer camps. The kids find this as one of the best options of being outdoors away from home with some of their best friends and a great opportunity to mingle, have fun with the kids of their age and make new friends. But as far as the kids are concerned the right of selecting the best summer camp rests with the parents. Some of them are as follows:

2013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE Packing all the essentials for summer camp BY ACE ABBEY When the time for summer camp rolls around parents everywhere start planning. As soon as you get the summer camp packing list you probably want to get started.
THE NECESSITIES: Clothing is one of the most important things you can send with your child to summer camp. The amount that you send with them should be proportional to the amount of time they are going to stay. Your kids prob-
ably aren’t going to be taking care of laundry while they are away.
READ THE LITERATURE: A summer camp sends parents a list of things that each camper needs to bring along with them. This includes things like swim suits, jackets, even hiking boots. You don’t want your child to be the only one outside without a coat or having to stay indoors because they don’t have an umbrella. One way to make sure you don’t forget anything is to check items off the literature as you pack it. You won’t skip or forget anything that way.
Flipping Your Way Through Summer With
TALK TO YOUR CHILD: When kids are away from home there are some things they like to keep with them. It might make them feel more comfortable. They may want to bring along a journal, a camera, or even a favourite stuffed animal. If it isn’t going to hinder any of the activities while they are away feel free to let you child bring some of their own items with them to summer camp.
SEND CARE PACKAGES: Remember that you can always send care packages. If you child has a favourite
food or treat you can be sure that sending it to them would be a real special event. Make sure that you read all of the policies that the facility offers to make sure that you are sending acceptable items. Even if you can’t send homemade treats you can include photos or a special book. Even more important than a care package is a letter from home. Just a short note or card would mean a lot. While shopping for all of the things they will need on the list you can pick up some cute cards or stationary to help remind you to write. You can also pack some stamps, envelopes, and paper for your kids as well to make sure you hear from them. Article provided by ArticlesFactory.com

2013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE Find the best summer camp programs and activities BY JIMMY SORENSEN As the summer season approaches, each parent has the same thought in mind. They all are in the same boat questioning how they can keep their kids entertained, energetic, out of trouble, and productively active for part of the summer if not the entire summer. As parents, this is a good option to keep your teens occupied during the summer break, but yet be sure they are going to enjoy on their own.
thinking and also what they wish to do. Would they love to learn a new skill? In what area or subject are they excited about? Do they wish to attend recreation-oriented summer day camps? Or do they even want to invest more time and push their skills additionally by participating overnight camps? Be seated with your kids and discuss the various options with them, keeping in mind what they really want out of their summer experience.
SUMMER CAMPS
FACTORS TO CONSIDER & KEEP IN MIND
One good option for teens to pass their summer season successfully as they enjoy themselves, plus make friends is to attend a summer kids’ camps. There are several different summer programs for children planned by various organizations in several categories of interest. These camps can be of two type -- summer day camps or overnight camps. Depending on your kid’s interest, you can select from the several options available in your region.
Keeping a few things in mind after you have identified what your child wants out of the summer camps that you research, will make for a successful and productive summer experience for all. • Be sure that the camp you finalize has a tuned mix of learning and fun experiences, plus that your child doesn’t feel like it is all work and no play. • Ask about the in-house arrangements as well as amenities along with the features that the camps offer. You wish your children to be as comfortable as they can be while away from home. • If your children have any special needs, then check with the camps if they can be accommodated plus taken care of in a proper manner. • Check about the sleeping arrangments if you prefer an overnight camp. Be sure that the facilities are apt as well as that safety will be prioritized. • Stay on top of things by checking the sign up deadlines. Certain camps fill up quite fast and you do not want your child to miss out on a
INVOLVE KIDS IN THE SELECTION Do you research before the summer approaches, and assure you keep your kids involved in the process each step of the way? Their input is crucial as you want them to be satisfied with their time spent through the summer and never feel just like they are forced into something they don’t want to do. Talk to your kids and find out they’re
good opportunity due to a missed deadline. • Summer programs for children can be costly. Talk about the financial element with your teens. It will also teach them the value of money, and as well inquire about financial assistance available. Non-profit camps can even be a good alternative if required. • Determine where the location will be of the camp you and your children select. Make sure that medical treatment is proper as well. Doing all of your research properly, discussing options and interests with your kids, and even keeping a few minor specif-
ics in your mind, will come in handy while choosing summer activities for your teens and ensure that you are all happy. It becomes a crucial decision and even taking care of what process you follow will make things a lot simpler for both you as well as your kids. Jimmy Sorensen from Campbell, CA is an aficionado of summer camps. He regularly writes about the benefits of summer camps for kids and teens. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

2013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE Five reasons why your child should attend summer camp BY ALOYSIUS AUCOIN If school’s out and your kids are looking forward to a few months off, explore the benefits of summer camp. While you may have a few reservations at first, the end result is sure to be a positive experience for your child. Whether you want your kids to get out and explore nature, or simply allow them to get a change of scenery, a summer camp is an ideal choice. Examine a few great reasons why your child should do something different while school’s out:
MAKE NEW FRIENDS When your child is at summer camp, it’s essential that he or she gets out of their comfort zone and makes new friends.
Your kid is in a place where he or she is meeting new children from all over. In such an unfamiliar environment, they may find that they enjoy talking to other kids of different backgrounds, and might even make a few new friends.
EXPERIENCE NATURE Some children who live in the city have never been to a park or on a camping trip. That’s why going to summer camp can be a life-changing experience. There will be many things to do, such as exploring the water at the lakes, climbing trees, checking out butterflies-- you name it. Bottom line, your kids will be outdoors and immersed in Mother Nature for a few weeks.
GULL LAKE CENTRE
Gull Lake, Alberta • Ph: (403) 782-2495 • www.gulllakecentre.ca At Gull Lake Centre, camp is awesome! We believe summer camp is an important time in a child’s life, a time of adventure and discovery unique to the camping experience, a time where for one week each year, we get to come together and live life to the fullest. Summer camp is a rite of passage that has been changing lives for generations. Gull Lake Centre offers camping programs for ages 5-17 plus a family camp. Our camp runs at a 3:1 ratio of campers to leaders, ensuring quality care for each child. We believe that living life to the fullest means being connected with God, in relationship with others and having fun outside. Join us this summer for the best week of your year. Some activities that we offer are: boating, wall climbing, photography, archery, wakeboarding, mad science, canoeing, unbelievable wide games & much, much more. Go to www.gulllakecentre.ca for more information and to register.
TRY NEW ACTIVITIES If your kids are more inclined to simply stay in the house and play video games, getting away can really give them a jolt. Many kids today don’t even understand what it’s like to play outside and run around. Therefore, when they’re gone for a few weeks and have no choice but to try new activities, they may be in for a shock. Oftentimes it’s a good shock, and your kids might want to get out and do different things more often.
CONQUER A FEW FEARS Summer camp not only allows kids to try new things, but they may even face a few fears. If your child is extremely shy or
doesn’t like challenges, being around other kids could help. In addition, there may be an activity that your child has shied away from in the past, yet overcomes while away. In the end, your child may come back happier and more confident.
GET A CHANGE IN SCENERY Your kids may feel like their life in the city is the center of the universe. However, when placed in a situation where they have no choice but embrace their environment, they may be amazed to find that they have an interest in nature. Your child may find that he or she enjoys watching birds or insects, or may be in awe of all the natural beauty around them. A change in scenery can really open their eyes to the world. 2013 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE Finding a summer camp for a reluctant child BY ANTOINETTE AYANA Some kids love the idea of summer camp, while others would rather watch television all day. If you are having trouble motivating your child to go, there are things you can do to make it more appealing. While some kids will relish the idea of spending a few weeks at a summer camp, canoeing, swimming, and meeting new children, there are those that will refuse. So how do you get reluctant children to look forward to getting out of the house for their summer vacation? Rather than thrusting them into a random location and allowing a counselor to dictate how they will spend their free time, try to find a place that can offer something that will keep them interested and even excited.
Few parents think to ask their kids about what kind of summer camp that they would like to attend. While some children may be apathetic at the idea, you may be surprised by a positive reaction. Before asking them about their opinion, it’s important to have narrowed down possible locations so that no one is disappointed by budget, distance, or other potential restrictions. Choose several options in the area and allow your children to look through the web site or brochures. Even if you can only find two places, giving them some voice in the decision will likely spark some enthusiasm and less resistance to the idea. If they still refuse, have them provide you with some of their own suggestions of ways to spend their vacation. While you’re likely to get the answer, ‘sit in front of the
SUMMER SCHOOL in the City! Red Deer Public Schools – Community Programs PH: 403.342.1059 http://communityprograms.rdpsd.ab.ca
High School Credit Classes run July 2 to July 31 from 8 AM to 11:45 AM Mon. through Fri. High School students, or those entering grade 10 in September, 2013, are able to take courses to upgrade existing marks, complete a required course missing from their timetable, or for personal reasons. All core courses are offered. Some subjects will be teacher taught; some subjects will be using distance learning materials, but a teacher will be present during class time. Also offered are SUMMER TUTORIAL CLASSES for Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-9. Summer review and improvement classes are offered to assist students who experience difficulty with language arts or math during the regular school year. The summer tutorial program is one week in length and operates in the mornings. Please call 403.342.1059 for more details.
television or computer,’ they may surprise you and suddenly express an interest in volunteer work or learning a new skill. Another great motivator to get kids excited about summer camp rather than dreading being torn away from their computer or video games is to include their friends. One of their pals may already be attending, so it is a good idea to keep in the loop with other parents in order to compare your options and to encourage kids to go together. You can also suggest that they invite friends to attend with them if possible. Having a close friend takes away the fear of several weeks of isolation from the familiar. It also means that you’ll have another set of parents to help back you up on the plans in case of any last minute cold feet.
If your child has goals, summer camp is a great time to explore them and learn new skills. Whether it’s sports, music, acting, or something more academic, there are many camps that specialize in particular areas. A child fascinated by marine biology would be much more interested in spending their vacation time at an aquarium learning about sea life rather than practicing archery in the woods. Many locations will supply the kids with all of the material necessary such as books, musical instruments, or other necessary tools, which means it is a much cheaper initial investment than outright purchasing these materials yourself along with private lessons. Take the time to read about the activities on offer and go over them with your kids. Article provided by ArticlesFactory.com
