Drug bust nets $159,000 cash Campbell River Mounties hit a small jackpot during a drug raid earlier this month. RCMP officers seized 11 ounces of cocaine, plus $159,000 in cash, following their search of a Coronation Crescent residence on Feb. 15. It was one of the largest amounts of cash ever seized by local Mounties. “This is a significant bust which will impact the illegal drug trade in Campbell River,” said RCMP Cpl. Museum theft thwarted Police are reviewing video surveillance to identify the suspects who tried to steal two lawn mowers from the Museum at Campbell River. The attempted theft on Sunday night was thwarted by a caretaker who interrupted the thieves’ work. Police were called to the museum on 5th Avenue at 10:46 p.m. and checked the garage where the mowers are kept, but the suspects were already gone. About four hours later, at 2:27 a.m., RCMP responded to a commercial alarm at Monk Office Supply on Shoppers Row. The front door was found smashed and the business was entered, however, investigators are unsure if anything was taken. On Friday, at 9:13 a.m., police responded to a complaint of a smashed window at the Campbell River Pet Center, located at 1250 Ironwood Road. Fortunately, entry was not gained.

Local native leader elected chair of Island economic board A F i r s t N at i o n s leader from Campbell River is the new chair of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance. Dan Smith of the Campbell River Indian Band and executive member of the First Nations Summit has been named chair-elect of the Alliance and will become chair of the society in June. “Dan Smith is broadly known and well-respected,� said Alliance president George Hanson. “He has served on the VIEA board for a number of years and we are fortunate to have someone of his broad experience as our chair.� Smith has an
extensive history of working with First Nations, aboriginal organizations and the federal government. His involvement has included serving as vice-president of the Native Council of Canada, president of the United Native Nations, member of the BC Human Rights Commission, as well as numerous other boards and committees. He has worked in senior positions with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, Heritage Canada, and Canada Employment and Immigration. Re c e n t l y, S m i t h served as chief nego-
tiator for the Hamatla Treaty Society on Vancouver Island. Smith was elected to the three-member political executive of the First Nations Summit, the Summit Task Group, in June 2008. The Task Group is authorized by the Summit to carry out specifically mandated tasks on issues related to treaty negotiations in B.C. The First Nations Summit, which is comprised of a majority of First Nations and Tribal Councils in BC, provides a forum for First Nations in British Columbia to address issues related to Treaty negotiations as well as other issues
of common concern. A 3.91 per cent residential tax increase was expected to be signed off on by council Tuesday afternoon. A special council meeting was arranged Tuesday, after the Mirror went to press, in order for council to give first three readings to the city’s five-year financial plan which includes the 2013 city budget. Council developed the city’s financial plan over the course of four days – two in early December to form the base budget and two in late-January to work out service level changes, the capital plan and taxation levels. This is expected to be the earliest the city has ever submitted its financial plan to the province in recent history. Laura Ciarniello, the city’s manager of corporate services, said the financial plan is the culmination of a lot of hard work. “The five year financial plan represents the results of those deliberations on a consolidated basis,� Ciarniello said. “The bylaw was constructed using results of the deliberations including the council approved residential tax increase of 3.91 per cent.� The budget maintains the Parks Parcel Tax at $25 but contains no tax increase for other tax classes. Also included in the budget is $40,000 for RCMP building repairs, $25,000 for the downtown fire hall exterior repairs and painting, as well as $30,000 for exterior painting on the Community Centre. Council also approved an
increase in pay for auxiliary firefighters worth $15,340 as well as $100,000 in airport business opportunities. In an effort to partially restore funding cut from a handful of city departments last year, council also included $45,000 earmarked for maintenance and repairs on city facilities as well as $24,500 for horticulture services (gardening and grass trimming, most notably at the welcome to Campbell River sign at Jubilee and Highway 19A). The budget was approved in January by councillors Andy Adams, Ryan Mennie, Claire Moglove and Mary Storry while Mayor Walter Jakeway and councillors Ron Kerr and Larry Samson were opposed. Jakeway said more needed to be cut, particularly staffing levels at city hall, and the savings put towards the city’s $6 million debt. He also disagreed with the capital plan, in which council approved a plan to borrow $15 million over 15 years to pay for nearly $60 million in water and sewer projects between 2013 and 2017. Moglove, who did approve the budget, was concerned council drew too heavily on reserve accounts in forming the budget. “Yesterday I said we were sleep walking to the abyss,� Moglove said during a budget planning meeting Jan. 29. “I would say since then we took so much from reserves that we have gone to a jog. “With this budget, what we are doing, in my opinion, is simply postponing a tax increase to future councils.� Both Moglove and Adams warned that in the end, the city is going to have to “pay the piper.�

Each family will film their attempts to conserve energy in their homes and all the fun, creative, and crazy moments that go along with their experience. Participating families will receive an iPad to keep, professional videographer training, and a free home energy audit. The clips that each family captures through the challenge will be made into a professionally-produced film. The final film will be featured on Shaw TV, Youtube, in
Campbell River schools and at 2013 film festivals. Families and households of all ages, sizes and backgrounds are invited to participate. “The Energy Challenge is a great opportunity for families who have struggled with conserving energy in their homes and are eager to make changes,” says Amy van den Hooven, project coordinator. To enter the contest, each family will have one minute to “pitch” their story in a video interview. The videos will be shown to a panel of judges from local media and BC Hydro, who will select the top five. Judges will be looking for humour and creativity to understand each family’s energy conservation fears and mishaps. Buildings emit 23 per cent of greenhouse gases produced in Campbell River, and one of the key targets outlined in Campbell River’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan is to have two per cent of existing buildings retrofitted annually to improve energy efficiency. Rock throwers target Dogwood hill The rock throwers on Dogwood just won’t stop. For a third straight week, RCMP responded to multiple incidents of rocks being thrown at moving vehicles in and around Dogwood Street. The latest incidents were reported to police last Thursday night. The first call came at 7:25 p.m., from a man whose vehicle was hit, presumably by rocks, on Dogwood near 9th Avenue. A few minutes later, a female driver was on the Dogwood hill, between 9th and 11th avenues, when her car was hit by rocks. At roughly the same time and same place, a couple
was driving up the hill when a rock caused a large chip in their windshield. “Police had already been called for the first complaint, and were searching for the suspect(s) on foot,” said Cpl. Poppy Hallam in a news release. “In all cases, it’s unclear which side of the Dogwood hill the rocks were coming from, but since all drivers were driving up the hill, it’s believed they were on the west side toward Elm Street.” Police have yet to arrest anyone involved in the numerous incidents. Anyone with information is urged to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers. In a separate incident, on Saturday at 1:07 a.m.,
police responded to a complaint from a driver whose windshield was cracked while driving along Highway 19 by Spit Road. The driver believes the vehicle may have been hit by a pellet or BB. Patrols in the area were negative.

City can’t have $3.5 million promised Area D KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The city will not have access to senior government funding awarded to the Strathcona Regional District for the Area D sewer project, according to the province. The city, which wants to extend its southern boundary in order to provide sewer service to 1,000 properties from Jubilee Parkway south to Henry Road, wrote a letter Nov. 27 to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to inquire about funding. Mayor Walter Jakeway, who wrote the l e t t e r, w a n t e d t o deter mine whether the city could benefit from funding already awarded to the Strathcona Regional District. “Council wished to clarify whether the
city could access the $3.5 million funding for the Area D sewer project to connect included properties of Area D to the city sewer if a decision is made to restructure the city boundary,” Jakeway wrote. “Council is requesting that the $3.5 million funding for Area D sewer continue to be held by the province, but in abeyance, and committed to connecting Area D residents to city sewer, pending a successful boundary restructure or until such time that the City of Campbell River decides it is not going to proceed with such an application.” Don Fast, deputy minister of the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, responded that the grant cannot be transferred unless agreed upon by the Strathcona Regional District and the city.
“There is no formal way that the ministry can hold the grant funding award in trust for the city,” Fast wrote. “It was acknowledged that infrastructure grants can be transferred from one local government to another. “However, specific criteria established by both the federal and provincial partners must be met, including agreement between both impacted local governments.” Fast also cautioned the city that whether or not its boundary extension goes ahead is up to the taxpayers. “Whether the project is to proceed through establishment of a SRD (Strathcona Regional District) service or through a city service following a boundary extension, is a choice that belongs to the electors of the proposed boundary
extension area within Electoral Area D,” Fast said. “If the residents and property owners in the proposed extension area are in favour of joining the city, the agreement of the city’s own electors will also be required before the city and the minister could recommend the boundary change.” Fast also warned that in order to ensure the electorate are making an informed decision, the city must provide a full disclosure on the benefits and implications of moving from rural status to municipal status, including the costs of extending the city’s sewer service to Area D and the tax impact on the average home. Since announcing its boundary extension proposal last September, the city has said it will conduct a full consultation process to infor m af fected
residents about service improvements a n d p ro p e r t y t a x changes should Area D residents vote to join Campbell River. The city came forward with its proposal
after talks with the Strathcona Regional District to extend its sewer service into Area D fell through in late 2011. Brenda Leigh, director of Area D, said the
regional district could not possibly accept the city’s offer because the cost the city was quoting was double the $9,350 her constituents approved borrowing in a 2006 referendum.

City council put an end to the doggy daycare saga Tuesday night, giving third reading to a bylaw amendment that will allow pet service businesses to take up shop in the city.
With council’s positive vote on Tuesday, pet services (which includes doggy daycares) will be accepted uses under Commercial-2 (C-2), Commercial-4 (C-4) and Industrial-1 (I-1) city zonings. The vote passed following a second pub-
lic hearing into the issue. The hearing was ordered by council two weeks ago after Mayor Walter Jakeway requested council reconsider the pet services bylaw – a bylaw which had already been shot down by council. Kimberly Dorrington and business

partner Ryan Pickard said they were grateful to council for taking a second look. “We are extremely happy council has brought this back,” Dorrington said. “We know there’s been a lot of confusion among council as well as between us and the city.” A lot of the confusion stemmed from the wording in the pet services bylaw relating to the how long the dogs would be allowed to go outside. In both commercial zones the bylaw states the dogs must be ‘wholly’ enclosed in the building with limited outdoor use allowed while under the industrial zone the dogs are permitted to be outdoors for up to three hours each day. Dorrington and Pickard originally did not like that restriction but have since relaxed their stance. “I’m quite happy with being able to apply for a variance in a C-2 or C-4 zone if
we find an appropriate building that opening the dogs up to outside is not going to bother anybody,” Dorrington said. The variance could allow the dogs more outside time in her specific commercial building if Dorrington were to apply and be successful. “I greatly appreciate the fact this is being brought back,” Dorrington added. on a process that’s not guaranteed. “The only concern I have is yes, there’s always an opportunity to come back for a variance but it does have to go through all the processes, the public hearing, and you just never know for sure,” Storry said. “So I just want to make sure you know... and that if you found a place that could work... the variance isn’t always a go.” Dorrington said she “appreciated” Jakeway and Storry’s comments but added she’s aware she can apply through a board of variance – a less costly option where a board can look at the variance request. “This wouldn’t have to go through a major ordeal like this again because it’s already zoned pet services, we’re just trying to open it up a bit wider,” Dorrington said. In the meantime, Dorrington has been looking at a piece of property in the Industrial-1 zoning for her doggy daycare.

When Sarah Baikie first heard about the concept of a children’s swap and shop she thought it would be a good fit for Campbell River. What she didn’t bank on was the overwhelming response. “The response has been fantastic,” Baikie said. “Immediately after putting up the Facebook event page, it took on a life of its own with people saying they were going or booking a table.” As of late last week, the first-annual Family Swap and Shop had 35 tables committed and Baikie expects that number to rise to 50 or 60. A family can book a table for $10 to sell gently used items such as children’s clothing, accessories, toys and even maternity clothing. For $25, small businesses can also get in on the action. Local businesses such as Discovery Toys and a face painter are already booked for the Swap

view as a mom, it’s a nice way to step out for an hour or two,” Baikie said. There will also be a bake sale featuring gluten-free goodies made by daycare staff, volunteers and the parents of the children who attend Cari’s Infant and Toddler Centre as well as Forest Circle Childcare. Gwen Bennett, coordinator at Cari’s, said the “overall aim and purpose of the event is to raise money for educational materials and resources for both Forest Circle and Cari’s.” Bennett said the event all came together thanks to the tireless efforts of the ninemember Forest Circle Society for Families board, which formed
eight years ago. “We’ve been thrilled with the support of our board and this is an example of the commitment they make to childcare in Campbell River,” Bennett said. “Our board members all have very busy lives and it’s much appreciated.” Those eager to get a jump on the sales can take advantage of the Early Bird admission from 9:30-10 a.m., $5 for adults and free for children under 14. Liberals wandering onto NDP turf The BC Liberal government’s plans to boost income taxes on business and high-income earners takes a page out of the NDP opposition’s plans, and makes sense. It has been running large deficits, at least partly because of much lower natural gas prices, which have affected government revenues. The province is claiming it will balance the budget in 2013-14, largely because it plans to sell more than $600 million in surplus property. The provincial government is also boosting MSP premiums again next year. This is completely unfair to moderate income earners, who do not get the exemption from paying the premiums that goes to low income people. This budget is crafted with the May 14 election in
mind. It is designed to convince wavering voters that the BC Liberals are competent money managers. Over the course of the past 12 years, the Liberals have been sound money managers much of the time, but in recent years their record has been more mixed. The Liberals were hoping for a big boost in revenue through the HST, but that was torpedoed by voters because of the bumbling way the government brought in the tax. That hurt their reputation as competent managers. By adopting part of the NDP platform, the Liberals may have unintentionally telegraphed that the NDP too has good fiscal ideas. – Black Press

Hospital site congested Building our new hospital on the same small congested site makes no sense at all. VIHA turned down the offer of donated land because they said the cost of servicing the property would be too much. Why? The servicing of the existing site is close to 50 years old. They will not only have to jackhammer the paved parking lot and haul it away, they will also have to replace a lot of the servicing and bring it up to code. Will this cost less? The existing property could be sold and moneys used to upgrade the plans for our new hospital. We must get this right for our medical professionals, our children and our grandchildren. This new hospital is going to have to last us a very long time. VIHA says there will be little disruption to ongoing services during construction. I find that very hard to comprehend. Just trying to get anywhere close to the hospital will be a nightmare. God help anyone that may have a medical emergency during this construction period of 4-5 years. He has a white beard and a bully pulpit on CBC television, but he doesn’t use it to promote hockey fighting. Instead he sucker punches the oil and gas industry at every opportunity, with increasingly flagrant disregard for the rules of science. Public broadcasting referees keep their whistles in their pockets, wary of offending a legend. He’s David Suzuki, and he has evolved from geneticist to TV celebrity to his current role as the Don Cherry of Canadian science, an angry curmudgeon lashing out at his enemies. Earlier I wrote about Suzuki’s hit piece on the Alberta oil sands, featuring selective pollution studies
and a celebrity turn by movie director James Cameron, who toured the alleged carbon crime scene in his personal jet helicopter. Suzuki’s latest Scud missile of misinformation was launched Feb. 7 on The Nature of Things. It’s called Shattered Ground, and it borrows heavily from earlier shock docs that target hydraulic fracturing for shale oil and gas. While clearly aimed at the surging shale gas industry in B.C., this hourlong program offers little about B.C.’s long history of gas development. Suzuki’s voice-over refers briefly to B.C.’s Oil and Gas Commission, insinuating it was set up as a pet regulator protecting the industry from stricter oversight.
Mostly the show focuses on places like Dish, Texas and Dimock, Pennsylvania. The Texas segment talks about traces of neurotoxins in residents’ blood samples, blaming this on gas drilling and “fracking,” the new swear word of professional environmentalists. The evidence shows some people have these traces in their blood, but others don’t, which suggests that more likely sources are cigarettes or exposure to disinfectants. Pennsylvania and Colorado are key stops for the anti-fracking crowd. For centuries there have been places known for methane dissolved in groundwater, typically from shallow coal seams. This is where you can find a rustic
fellow to shake a jug of well water and touch his Bic lighter to it, producing a brief blue flame. The standard sequence moves to a sink and faucet, where a more impressive methane fireball is generated. Suzuki’s voice-over notes that this is the scene that really gets media attention. There’s no evidence that drilling caused it, but hey, it’s TV. Science, meet Hillbilly Handfishin’. Protest sequences take up much of the program. Moms rally against a gas well near a school in Erie, Pennsylvania, forcing evil Canadian corporation Encana to back off. An elderly Quebec woman sobs on camera, convinced that a nearby gas well will trigger a relapse of her cancer. Continued on A9

Pacific salmon named B.C.’s official fish Three B.C. organizations working for t h e s u s t a i n ab i l i t y of BC’s watersheds are applauding a Bill introduced last week to designate Pacific salmon as an official B.C. emblem. The Pacific Salmon Foundation, Fraser Basin Council and B.C. Conservation Foundation said the designation emphasizes the social, economic and environmental importance of all seven species of wild Pacific salmon and of healthy watersheds. They are encouraging all mem-
bers of the legislature to support the amendment to the Provincial Symbols and Honours Act. The organizations proposed the designation to the provincial government in 2011, pointing to a high level of public support. Their report Do We Make it Official?: Recognizing Pacific Salmon as a BC Emblem includes public survey results that show 93 per cent of British Columbians named Pacific salmon as B.C.’s most iconic fish, and 85 per cent supported a proposal to
designate all seven species of Pacific salmon as an official emblem of the province. The province-wide public opinion survey was conducted by the Mustel Group in October 2010. “The idea complements the provincial government’s investment in Pacific salmon and their habitats,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO, Pacific Salmon Foundation. He said that the Province’s B.C. Living Rivers Trust has funded more than 450 projects in BC
watersheds to support habitat restoration, increased capacity for management and First Nations, and local watershed planning.” “All of these are very cost-effective projects that have greatly benefited salmon and have been possible through extensive collaboration and partnerships with communities, the private sector, several foundations and all orders of government,” added Al Lill, Manager of Living Rivers – Georgia Basin/ Vancouver Island for the BC Conservation
Foundation. “The Government of British Columbia has made major investments in the conservation and restoration of our iconic Pacific salmon since 2006 through the Living Rivers Trust,” said Terry Lake, Minister of Environment. “By designating Pacific salmon as an official provincial symbol we are building on this investment, and we send a strong message to all British Columbians that we must together work for a sustainable future for Pacific salmon.”

shows. He has people to load up the propaganda weaponry, just as his ghostwriter in Toronto cranks out the relatively innocuous weekly columns that run in some Black Press publications. In fairness, most episodes of The Nature of
Things are in the original spirit of the show. A recent program on an ancient Egyptian aquifer, voiced by Suzuki over National Geographic video footage, would be appropriate for a high school classroom. The same cannot be

Plea expected from mom in shoplifting cases PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A mother of three, accused of multiple counts of shoplifting, is expected to enter a guilty plea today after spending time behind bars. Denise Hanuse, 33, was ordered into custody after her bail was revoked on Monday in Campbell River provincial court. “Can I say something?” Hanuse asked meekly from the prisoner’s box, after
defence lawyer Doug Marion had already tried to secure her release. But Judge Brian Saunderson quickly cut her off. The veteran judge said Hanuse is establishing herself as “committed thief ” who has no concern for court orders. In short, anything she had to say couldn’t possibility alter his decision. “It’s done. It’s over!” he stated. Hanuse was led away to cells at the local RCMP detachment,
but she is expected to return to court today to enter a guilty plea. Bor n and raised in Campbell River, Hanuse was residing in Victoria last spring when she was arrested for two alleged shoplifting incidents. On May 9, 2012, she was arrested for allegedly trying to steal goods worth $1,369 from the Walmart in Saanich. She was freed on bail, then arrested again on June 2 for allegedly shoplifting from a Victoria Save-
On Foods store and assaulting a store employee. Again she was freed on conditions and ordered to report to a bail supervisor. However, she allegedly failed to report on Aug. 7, in Port Hardy. At some point Hanuse returned to Campbell River. On Feb. 5, she went into the local Walmart, even though her original bail order prevents her from entering any Walmart on Vancouver Island. The officer allegedly saw her take a computer virus program and then followed her as she returned to the walk-in clinic where her son was awaiting treatment. It is further alleged she concealed lubricant and throat lozenges from the pharmacy, then went food shopping, paid for the food and then exited the store where she was stopped by secu-
rity. It is alleged she tried to steal the program and the other two items which came to a total value of $82.45. Goddard asked the judge to revoke bail based on the “repetition of the prior offence” and the alleged breach of bail and court orders. Campbell River forester receives top honour A Campbell River forestry veteran has received the highest honour from the Association of BC Forest Professionals. Rick Monchak, a professional forester for 35 years, received the Distinguished Forest Professional award last Thursday night at the association’s annual general meeting in Prince George. Monchak works for TimberWest Forest Corp. in Campbell River. After graduating from the Forestry program at the University of British Columbia more than three decades ago, Monchak was recruited as a timber cruiser for British Columbia Forest Products Ltd. He moved up the ranks, taking on greater responsibili-

into TimberWest and while there, expanded
his areas of expertise to include forest man-
agement, forest development planning and integrated resource and operational planning. Monchak became a mentor to new forest professionals and a community liaison, notably serving as a key contact in First Nations discussions. Known as a humourous and thoughtful man, Monchak was also instrumental in showcasing coastal B.C. to an NBC film crew, who profiled the forestry sector in the lead-up to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Association of BC Forest Professionals is responsible for registering and regulating B.C.’s professional foresters and forest technologists. Today, it is the largest professional forestry association in Canada.

It is with sad hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ed. He will be sadly missed by his wife Connie, his children Rebeca (Derek), Corbie (Dorrel), Cameron (Bree), and his six grandchildren. Friends and family will miss his sense of humor, kindess and generosity. Ed’s many years at Action Sports allowed him to share his love, passion and knowledge of all sports, especially hockey; and yes, that would include cards. (Thank you Jeff!) David, John (Red) Francis - Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen(Kay) in 2008. He is survived by his daughter Corrinne Barrett, Allyson Crowe, stepson Myron Anderson, grandchildren Leila Ball, Lincon Barrett, Heather Crowe, and Rhonda Crowe. John was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, enjoyed hunting and ďŹ shing, was a tugboat captain, logger, and a ďŹ shing guide on the B.C. west coast. He enjoyed the great outdoors and retired to Campbell River in 1994. John was a great story teller who enjoyed sharing his adventures along with his homeade wine, with all his friends and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Private family arrangements with cremation, to take place at Elk Falls Crematorium For those wishing, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Elks Children Summer Camp.

Tyees take game one in OT thriller The No.1 Autobody Bantam A Tyees won game one 8-7 in a nailbiter. The game was a see-saw battle with one team going up by one goal, only to have the other team erase the lead minutes later. The Tyees ran into penalty trouble in the later half of the game, which saw Juan de Fuca have a one-goal lead several times before the Tyees would tie it up each time. The Tyees took a one-goal lead near the end of the third but were unable to seal the deal and Juan de Fuca even things up with
40 seconds left on the clock. At the end of regulation, the teams were knotted at 7 goals a piece. A 10-minute overtime solved nothing and both teams were sent to their respective dressing rooms for an ice clean. Following the flood, the teams returned for a second overtime which saw the Tyees score the final goal of the game. The Tyees travel to Juan de Fuca Saturday morning for game two and if necessary, game three will be played Sunday at 4 p.m. at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

The North Island Rage U16 field lacrosse team, sponsored by Saratoga Ventures, attended the provincial championships in Burnaby and despite playing in a strong pool, made team history. Vancouver was the Rage’s first opponent and the North Island team was up 7-4 at the half before the Rage found themselves getting into penalty trouble and Vancouver got back to within one goal. The Rage turned it on at the end and won the game 13-11 with goals by Alec Molander (4), Graham Evans (2), Tanner Jones (2), Garrett (2), Bailey Robinson (2), and Jory Clermont (1). Jones was named MVP for the game. North Island then faced Mission in a night game and were down 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Lucas Marriot Spencer had a strong game at middie and goals by Jones, Molander (2) and Evans got the boys to within one at the half. Sam Kussauer scored one in the third and the quarter ended 8-5 Mission. In a very dramatic fourth quarter with stick checks, penalties and disallowed goals, the team took a 9-7 loss, despite Burchill’s heroics in net. Molander earned MVP honors. With a 1-1 record, the Rage had to try to beat the Adanacs by as many goals as possible to ensure a berth in the cross-over game. Not wanting to leave their fate to chance, the Rage won 14-2 with goals. Brady Garrett received the MVP and Sam Kussauer was awarded the Warrior Fair Play award for the season. Nanaimo had a 3-0 record from the A pool and the Rage found themselves facing their arch rivals for the opportunity to play for the gold medal. In a see-saw battle, Nanaimo was up 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, with goals by Evans and Griffin Whyley, then North Island was up 5-4 at the half with goals by Sam Kussauer, Molander and Vigneron. The boys increased their lead to 8-6 by the third quarter (Molander, Evans and Smith) and were leading 10-6 partway through the fourth quarter (Molander - 2). The team seemed tentative in their attempts to run the clock down and Nanaimo stormed back with three goals. The team managed to hold them off and secure a 10-9 win and a trip to the gold medal game. Nathan Hoff was given a welldeserved MVP. The Rage was happy to get another crack at Mission in the finals. As the team did in the Island championships, they rose to the challenge to a man and Mission was never in the game. Continued on A30

Jeff and Travis Goodwin took the Mirror with them to Ufa, Russia to catch the World Junior Hockey Championships. The Goodwins have been all over North America watching and playing hockey and they say no rinks or crowds have been as vibrant and loud as the Ufa arena when Russia player – especially against Canada.

A group of Campbell River Highland Dancers and their families took the Mirror with the last summer to Scotland. The picture was taken at the Inverkeithing Highland Games in Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland on Aug. 4, 2012. The girls competed at the Games there and had a great time experiencing a Highland Games in Scotland. The families who travelled for two weeks in Scotland were the MacIvers, the McEachrens, the Hills, the Dregers and the Kobayashis.

Accessible Wilderness gets a boost for unique campsite at Roberts Lake
A small gathering of supporters raised a nice chunk of cash – $2,500 – for The Roberts Lake Wilderness Lodge Project on Saturday night at Misty Fin’s restaurant. The evening, sponsored by the Accessible Wilderness Society, featured some great food and terrific raffle items all in support of the society’s dream project. “The Wilderness Lodge will not be for any one group of people, that is the genius of the concept of universal design,” says Dan Bauer, the
society’s president and founder. “The concept simply allows access for everyone...our goal is to create barrier-free wilderness opportunities so that everyone can enjoy Canada’s greatest natural resource.” The goal is to build British Columbia’s first “universally designed” wilderness lodge and campground facility at Roberts Lake, located north of Campbell River.
