She is desperate to find this driver not because she’s angry, but because she wants to thank him. “I need to thank him for helping Cameron and let him know we think he is a hero,” said Shannon Sandau, mother of four boys. Her second son, Cameron, was pushed into the busy road at Blueridge Drive and Saturna Crescent by a group of five boys as he walked home from school. Sandau credits the driver’s quick reflexes for the fact her son wasn’t injured or killed. She’s also grateful the driver cared enough to get out of his car and offer help. “He stepped up to the plate and renewed my faith that there are people willing to go the extra mile.” Sandau said the boys involved were suspended from school for one week, but if the driver comes forward as a witness then charges could be laid. “Those boys should be held accountable for their actions.” Const. Three charged for Jonathan Bacon murder One accused has survived three targeted shootings

Three men have been charged with the first-degree murder of Jonathan Bacon, formerly of Abbotsford, and the attempted murder of four others in Kelowna in August 2011. In a press conference held Monday in Delta, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) announced that Jujhar KhunKhun of Surrey, Michael Kerry Hunter Jones of Gibsons, and Jason Thomas McBride of North Vancouver were arrested last Friday. CFSEU Chief Supt. Dan Malo said the arrests were part of an 18-month investigation, called E-Nitrogen, and were made after 100 officers in Vancouver, Kelowna and Toronto executed simultaneous search warrants. ings believed to be in retaliation for Bacon’s death, was arrested at his residence in Surrey, while Jones, 25, was arrested at his home in Vancouver. McBride, 37, was arrested in Toronto, where he had recently moved, but has been transferred to B.C.

All three have been remanded in custody. Bacon, 30, a key player in the Red Scorpions gang, was in a Porsche Cayenne SUV with four other people when they were shot at on Aug. 14, 2011 outside of the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort in Kelowna. The shooting wounded Hells Angel Larry Amero, Independent Soldier James Riach, and Lyndsey Black, while Leah Hadden-Watts was paralyzed. Malo said police believe the “cascade of violence,” which has continued since the Kelowna incident, began with the fatal shooting of Gurmit Dhak in October 2010 in a parking lot at Burnaby’s Metrotown shopping centre. “There have been several homicides that have occurred in the last 18 months, with the flashpoint being that of Gurmit Dhak …. that caused

Last month, Manjinder Hairan was fatally gunned down near 127 Street and 112B Avenue in the Bridgeview area of Surrey. Khun-Khun was again critically wounded in that incident. Khun-Khun was also arrested last September in Abbotsford in a car that was allegedly seen pulling away from the scene of a driveby shooting on Bradner Road, but no charges were laid. Malo said the investigation surrounding the Kelowna shooting is ongoing.

Sheldon Kennedy is returning to UFV on Pink Shirt Day to bring his personal message of empowering individuals to stand up to bullying and abuse. Kennedy will be featured on Wednesday, Feb. 27 as part of the President’s Leadership Lecture Series at 4:30 p.m. in the lecture theatre (room B101) at the Abbotsford campus (33844 King Rd.). The former pro hockey player was the

The Abbotsford Youth Commission (AYC) hosts a rally on Pink Shirt Day to promote Bullying Awareness. The rally will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the AYC Youth Centre at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, 2499 McMillan Rd., starting at 3:30 p.m. Abbotsford Police, AYC staff, youth, university students and the public will stand together to recognize the seriousness of this issue in the community. “Bullying is a serious issue for youth in Abbotsford and we believe that it is essential that we provide every opportunity possible for young people to learn more about what they can do to prevent bullying,” said Bev Olfert, AYC executive director. She said Pink Shirt Day is a tangible way for youth to show that they are committed to stand up against bullying.

A performance review of Abbotsford mayor and councillors has been conducted by an independent, local researcher. The survey, devised by Sherril Guthrie, of The Guthrie Consultants Group Inc., asked respondents to mark the mayor and councillors on a variety of criteria, including financial management, service delivery to taxpayers, problem-solving, communications and transparency, and leadership and initiative. The system ranked performance between one and five, with one as “fails to meet expectations” and five as “exceeds expectations.” Coun. Henry Braun ranked highest, with an overall mark of 4.1. The next highest score was Mayor Bruce Banman at 2.6, while the rest of council ranked at 2.5 and below. Results were compiled from 125 residents, who represented 20 per cent of those approached for the study. The research noted a challenge in conducting the survey to be the “fear factor” in Abbotsford. The report claims a number of residents and businesses were afraid to complete a performance review of the mayor and council and felt the need for anonymity. Guthrie acknowledged that because it was the first of its kind, there was no established methodology or proven approach for the research.

Legendary group plays the AESC in April Motley Crue is preparing for a spring tour across Canada which includes a stop in Abbotsford on April 23. The famed hard rockers will perform on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. General manager of the AESC Jason Blumenfeld said, “It’s a show that we have been working on, trying to get it here for the last couple of years.” He said more shows will be announced in the near future. Motley Crue will be joined in Abbotsford by special guests Big Wreck; this will be the only time the band will perform in Canada throughout 2013. More to issue than deals

Cross-border shopping is a challenging reality for Canadian businesses, particularly those in communities such as Abbotsford that are very close to the border. The high Canuck dollar and the lure of lower prices at American retail outlets located within an hour’s drive or less from almost one million people in the South Fraser and Fraser Valley regions means literally millions of dollars flowing out of our economy and into that of the U.S. In this issue of The News, we feature a series of stories that focus on the issue of cross-border shopping. They contain important information for local consumers, to make informed decisions about their purchasing patterns, and how they view local business. As a recent Senate report acknowledges, many Canadian shoppers are of the opinion they are being gouged

by businesses in this country. While not dismissing that potential, there are some major, important factors that result in price gaps between Canadian and American goods. Chief among them are tariffs and taxes levied on businesses and imported goods in Canada, which American retailers and suppliers don’t face. Local consumers need to keep that in mind when they make buying decisions. They should also remember that a strong local economy is essential, and that local businesses contribute in very significant ways to the community. Chief among them is that they provide jobs, and in countless cases, give back to the community by supporting schools, organizations and charities. There’s a price to be paid for those bargains across the line.

Other Hand The folks in Cache Creek must wonder what they have to do to get some respect. Lower Mainlanders, other than making them custodians of our garbage, generally consider them inconsequential, yet now they are being tied to us politically. Granted, they’re currently linked to Chilliwack but in the latest iteration from the federal riding boundaries commission, they are due in 2015 to become part of the new Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon riding. A couple of weeks ago Fraser Valley newspapers carried stories about the proposed boundary changes, complete with map. Unfortunately, the maps showed a previous suggested riding that included only Mission and a good portion of Abbotsford. The stories in a garbled, inaccurate way detailed the southern boundaries of the riding and included Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, parts of

Hope and, incredibly, the attachment of Lytton, Lillooet, Ashcroft and Cache Creek, along with various communities and cabins in between. None of it made sense, but after railing the editor and a call to the federal riding commission, it appears that yes, Abbotsford will be linked to Cariboo communities. Apparently, the commission believes the Mission Bridge is an important connector to the integrity of the riding. It is also apparent that the Fraser Canyon and Thompson Canyon roads, in winter, are similarly considered ‘acceptable’ connectors. What couldn’t have been considered are the differences in climatic and economic zones. What is important to Abbotsford and Mission residents, where the electoral power lies, likely is either irrelevant or impractical in the southern Cariboo. If I was Cache Creek Mayor John Ranta, I’d be having a big one – a rant that is – over that. For example, the Auguston subdivision just down the street from where I live probably has more residents than Cache Creek, and perhaps Lytton combined. And if you are wondering what this has to do with where you live in Abbotsford,

And, since “public input” is no longer available, that’s the way it will be . . . unless, says the commission, a current MP objects. Do you think Mark Strahl in Chilliwack wants to object? He’s probably looking forward to not having to drive hundreds of miles and dozens of hours to visit his constituents after the 2015 federal election. Ed Fast, who is the current Abbotsford MP? Why would he

want to get involved? He’ll still have all of southern Abbotsford in one contiguous piece. Where I live, less than five miles from the border, and where Ranta and other mayors of various villages live almost 200 miles by road north, will be a new riding. No MP, no one to bitch about it. And electoral success will be decided in the Fraser Valley. Perhaps Abbotsford city councillor Henry Braun, should his aspirations on the mayor’s chair go awry next election, might consider running. After all, he has a place to hang his hat, both literally and figuratively, in the Cariboo – a large ranch on upper Hat Creek. Maybe I should run. I’ve been to all those “northern” communities more times over the years than I can count, and I can ride a horse. Then again, other than a few visits at election time, does the boundary commission really believe any politician who lives essentially on the U.S. border is going to spend a lot of time worrying about the issues and concerns of distant regions completely disconnected to the electoral power of Lower Mainland voters? markrushton@abbynews.com

Hit-and-run victim was a ‘creative, sensitive’ person

Shaminder Brar is being remembered as a “gentle, caring person with a heart of gold.” Gary Goulet, Brar’s boyfriend of six years, said he is devastated by her death. Brar, 34, was the victim of a suspected hit-and-run that occurred on Riverside Road in Abbotsford. Her body was found by a passerby on the morning of Monday, Feb. 18 between Vye and King roads. Goulet described Brar as one of the most humble people he had ever met. “She was so precious,” he said. Goulet and Brar rented a room in a home owned by Gary Stewart, who also lived in the residence and became a close friend of the pair. Goulet and Stewart said although Brar struggled with bipolar disorder that often resulted in drastic mood swings, she had a beautiful, intelligent soul. She graduated from high school in Abbotsford and attended college, where she excelled in math and science. Goulet, who called her “Sham,” said she also had an artistic side. “She was very creative and sensitive. I’d ask her, ‘What do you think this song is about?’ and she’d cry (about the meaning).” A memorial service for Brar was held Sunday at Henderson’s Funeral Home in Abbotsford and was attended by about 300 people. Brar left her residence on Sunday, Feb. 10 after an argument with Goulet, but did not return home. Goulet reported her missing on Feb. 12. F o l l l o w i n g her death, the

The Utica Devils were the New Jersey Devils’ AHL affiliate from 1987 to 1993, at which point they were purchased by the Flames. The Heat have struggled at the box office during their four seasons in Abbotsford. The attendance issues have cost taxpayers, as the Heat have a supply fee agreement with the City of Abbotsford that guarantees the team a break-even budget up to $5.7 million annually. The shortfall was $450,000 in 2009-10, $1.37 million in 201011, and $1.76 million in 2011-12. City hall released a written statement Monday saying, “The City of Abbotsford maintains a strong, ongoing relationship with Fraser Valley Sports and Entertainment and the Calgary Flames. The city will not address speculative reports or discuss possible AHL partnership agreements with other cities.”

ower prices on some items lure Canadian shoppers into the U.S., and last year’s increase in dutyfree limits has made it easier for travellers to bring home goods. However, what is beneficial for consumers has many Canadian retailers concerned. Ed Fast, Abbotsford MP and minister of international trade, said the federal government made the decision with the consumer in mind, saying they want to acknowledge that Canadians often travel to the United States and should have a reasonable opportunity to bring home purchases. In June of last year, the duty-free limits

for visits of more than 24 hours increased to $200 from $50, and for any visit longer than 48 hours, the amount increased to $800 from $400. There is no duty-free amount for visits under 24 hours. For communities close to the border such as Abbotsford, this change has caused concern for business owners. “I acknowledge that some of our retailers in Abbotsford have been impacted by the higher duty-free limits. In fact, some very close friends of mine have shared with me that they’ve been impacted, not only by that, but impacted by the high Canadian dollar,” said Fast. Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, said the impact since the increases has been noticeable, and for

some, devastating. “We’ve actually had a few businesses that have shut down in the last little while and I attribute it directly to crossborder shopping. It was a very dramatic, sudden difference in their revenue.” Stewart said individual consumers may benefit from going to the U.S. and buying $200 worth of goods, “but a struggling small business who purchases the same $200, because it’s for their business, gets taxed on that. That doesn’t quite seem fair.” Fast said one of the primary reasons for the change is the fact that the limits haven’t been increased in many years. “We felt that it was time for us to recognize the reality that the price of goods Continued on A14

It is estimated that B.C. farmers are losing sales of between two million and four million dozen eggs annually due to cross-border shopping. That equates to $6 million to $12 million worth of farm gate sales. In order to combat that loss, the BC Egg Marketing Board (BCEMB) has embarked on a province-wide awareness initiative to put the economic impact of cross-border shopping into perspective for consumers. Executive director Al Sakalauskas said that 1.9 million households in B.C. are located within 75 kilometres of the border. No other province in the country has that kind of population density relative to the border. The group’s study found that 76 per cent of those households have shopped in the U.S. in the past 12 months. Of those that did shop across the line, 26 per cent purchased eggs. Price is a factor. The average cost for a dozen Grade A white eggs in Canada is about $2.79, compared to about $1.75 in the United States. However, Sakalauskas noted the price becomes higher the further south one travels. “They are catering to Canadians down there and the American food industry has always used staple items as a draw.” Those who purchase eggs in the U.S. are getting a similar product to those in Canada. Sakalauskas said the quality of the egg itself is “pretty equal,” as they all come from the same type of hen.

The announcement that Motley Crue is coming to Abbotsford is another in a growing list of big-name talent coming to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Jason Blumenfeld, general manager of the AESC, has held the position for just over two years and in that time some of the industry’s biggest names have appeared. From Kiss to Reba McEntire, Toby Keith to the Stone Temple Pilots and John Fogarty and John Mellencamp, the building has featured legends and up-and-comers. In 2013, country sensation Carrie Underwood will grace the stage, as well as Terri Clark and the hosts of Mythbusters. It’s all about selling entertainment. When he arrived in Abbotsford, Blumenfeld didn’t have any expectations, other than he knew it would be a challenge, as the facility has lost money every year since its opening in 2009. Last year, the deficit was $1.7 million for building operations, down from $2.6 million the year prior (those figures do not include shortfalls incurred by the Abbotsford Heat hockey club). In the past two years, there has been an increase in the number of shows taking place at the AESC, Blumenfeld said. In 2010, 30 non-hockey events were staged. That number increased to 47 in 2011 and 55 in 2012. However, both Cirque du Soleil and Disney on Ice have announced they will not be appearing in Abbotsford in 2013. Each of those productions previously held multiple performances. “You lose one show and it counts as seven dates,” said Blumenfeld, adding that both shows are taking time off

and will be returning to Abbotsford in the future with new productions. While he is looking for other acts

to make up those dates, Blumenfeld said success comes with making good choices. “It’s easy to find

shows to fill in dates, but if no one’s coming, it loses money, which makes no sense. There’s always risk – you

have to take reasonable and necessary risk.” Finding the right shows for Abbotsford audiences is still in

The Cascades crushed the Bearcats in the title game (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) to claim their first PacWest championship, but both programs were elated in the aftermath of the weekend. “It’s a good feeling,” Cascades’ coach Dennis Bokenfohr told The News via cellphone. “I don’t know if relief is the word, but it’s only been about an hour, so I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet. “But we’re ecstatic, over-the-top

happy.” The Bearcats, riding the momentum of their upset win the night before, got off to a hot start in the first set, opening a four-point lead. But Nicole Blandford came off the UFV bench to serve and went on a tear, notching four aces as part of a nine-point run. “That was the TSN turning point,” Bokenfohr said. “Our girls’ confidence went through the roof. “After that, our players really started teeing off . . . It was pretty fun to watch.” Krista Hogewoning was UFV’s player of the game, while Anna Cupido won the corresponding award for CBC. Cascades fifth-year middle Kayla Bruce added the provincial tournament MVP award to the regularseason player of the year trophy she picked up earlier in the week, and teammates Hogewoning and Kira Tome were named tourney all-stars. CBC’s Cupido and April van Wieren were also picked for the tourney all-star team. CCAA nationals run March 7-9 at Lakeland College in Lloydminster, Alta. “The girls certainly did something that I would suggest not a lot of people thought they could do,” Bearcats coach Duncan Harrison said, reflecting on his team’s win over VIU to clinch a national berth. “I know it’s a cliche, but it was a total team effort.”

Pilots sweep past Mission Abbotsford advances to second round of playoffs The Abbotsford Pilots have advanced to the second round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs, thanks to a four game sweep of the Mission City Outlaws. Abbotsford clinched the berth to the next round on Sunday night by defeating the Outlaws 3-1. Brandon Daase and Brett Kolins led the way for the Pilots, each scoring one goal and adding one assist. Ryan Parmar had the other goal for the Abbotsford squad which dominated the game, out shooting Mission 45-18. Penalties played a big part in the lopsided shot total as Abbotsford had 10 powerplay opportunities, scoring once, compared to five for Mission who did not score with the man advantage. David McGowan had the lone tally for Mission. Abbotsford won the first three games of the series 5-1, 6-3 and 9-1. After a hectic week of basketball action, both of the University of the Fraser Valley’s hoop squads will take part in the Canada West Final Four. The UFV men’s team has overcome plenty of adversity, including a litany of injuries during the season and the four-game suspension of Nathan Kendall, the team’s fourth-leading scorer, which began with the Cascades’ best-of-three firstround playoff series against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Few observers gave UFV a chance against the Prairie Division’s top-seeded Huskies. Heat shut out, drop seventh game in a row

Abbotsford Heat didn’t so much lose Saturday’s game vs. the Charlotte Checkers, as they had it stolen from them. The culprit was Checkers goalie Justin Peters. The Heat peppered him with 41 shots, but he turned each one aside in a 1-0 victory at the Abbotsford

Entertainment and Sports Centre. Chris Terry notched the gamewinner late in the third period, scoring on the power play with 4:26 remaining. It marked the seventh straight defeat for the Heat (26-22-8). “You understand at this level

that you’re going to have some ups and downs,” Heat head coach Troy Ward noted afterward. “In the seven losses, I’d say four for sure we deserved to lose. I think that’s a fair statement. There’s probably three of the seven where I felt we played good enough to win.”

The hosts amassed a 41-22 edge in shots on goal, but came up empty due to the flawless play of Peters. The Heat are back in action on home ice next weekend vs. the Houston Aeros (Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m. both nights, AESC).

The UFV women’s hoopsters were playing for their playoff lives on Saturday evening, but you never would have known it based on their demeanour at their morning shootaround. The Cascades proved to be cool in the clutch, as they punched their ticket to the Canada West Final Four with a 73-58 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies in a game which was far closer than the final score indicated. UFV got off to a terrific start, building a 24-7 lead after the first quarter, but the Huskies simply wouldn’t quit. They battled their way back to within 12 at halftime, then opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to five. The Cascades made a run of their own bridging the third and fourth quarters to build the lead back up to 14 points – Celeste Dyck came up with a pair of steals and went 4-for-4 from the foul line, and Alexa McCarthy knocked down a three-pointer. But once again, the Huskies clawed their way back, drawing to within 60-58 after Kiera Lyons swished a pair of free throws with 2:14 left. But UFV’s Aieisha Luyken and Nicole Wierks took over the game at that point, leading the squad to victory. The Cascades had shot the ball poorly in each of the first two games of the series – they made just 31.4 per cent of their attempts from the field Thursday’s 65-58 victory, and 32.1 per cent in Friday’s 67-56 loss. The University of Calgary will play host to the Final Four next weekend, and the Cascades will face the Regina Cougars in the semifinals with a guaranteed berth to nationals on the line.

Neumann, Dora

March 13, 1924 - February 14, 2013

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Dora Neumann in her home at Bevan Lodge in Abbotsford on February 14th, 2013. Left to mourn her passing are her children Rene Neumann of Red Deer, Beda/Marlene Drury (Wayne) of Winnipeg, Karen Davies (Larrie) of Kenora, Kathryn Neumann (Shawn Smith) and Paul Neumann (Lori Begley) of Vancouver, her adopted daughter Mary Penner (Rudy) of Mission, seven grandchildren (Carla Yorke (Dave), Pierre Oberg (Kristina), Martha Drury, Josh Drury (Carrie Simpson), Emma Drury (Chris McIlwraith), Nicole Smith (Scott Lysack) Joel Smith (Kristel), and seven great-grandchildren (Maggie, Sophia, Isaak, Elliot, Winter, Charlotte, and Madison). Dora was predeceased by her husband John Neumann in 1980, and her daughter Anne Christine in 1946. Mom was born Dora Pratt in Ogden, Utah in 1924. She spent her childhood and received her early education in the United States. In l943, Mom and Dad were married in Walla Walla, Washington. Mom was attending Whitman College there, and Dad was serving with the United States Armed forces. When Dad returned from the War, he returned to school and Mom raised her first three children, and mourned the death of Anne Christine. In 1955 the family moved from Oregon to Ohio, where Dad entered the Lutheran Seminary. Mom worked outside the home at this time at the Wartburg Press Publishing House to help support the family. In 1959 the family immigrated to Canada, to Forestburg, Alberta to serve Hope Lutheran Church there. While Dad was serving his parish, Mom was not idle at home. She raised her teenage daughters along with two new babies, Kathryn and Paul. As well as raising her children, and serving alongside Dad at the Church,

she still found time to lead the Girl Guides and to be active in our local school. This was to be her pattern through the following years as the family served other parishes in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia – from Forestburg to St. Paul’s Lutheran in Brunkild, Manitoba, to Peace Lutheran in Claresholm, Alberta, to Redeemer Lutheran in Kitimat, BC, and finally to Matsqui Lutheran Church. In 1980, the family moved into a home in Abbotsford where Mom and Dad began massive renovations. When Dad died suddenly in August of that year, Mom was left with two young children and a half-finished home. So many good people from Matsqui and Abbotsford worked many hours alongside Mom, Kathryn and Paul to finish this big project. While this work went on, Mom worked as a Parish Worker in Matsqui, and went back to school, eventually graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Simon Fraser University. Mom was proud to be one of the more senior graduates, and to receive a standing ovation as she walked across the stage. After graduation, she counseled people from home, and taught new Canadians ESL. In the midst of all of this, Mom adopted into our family, our sister, Mary Penner. Later, Mom became involved with Abbotsford Peer Support for Seniors. Here she made new friends and was active for many years. Mom’s final home was at Bevan Lodge in Abbotsford. Mom settled happily in her new home, and was always singing the praises of the staff there. We are very grateful to all who looked after Mom at the Bevan and brightened her final days in so many ways. Thank you, Bevan. We would like to thank, also, Mom’s longtime friend, Lily Baysor of Mission, BC. Lily rarely missed a day without touching base with Mom. Thank you, Lily. A memorial for Mom is planned for February 28, 2:00 p.m. at Bevan Lodge, Abbotsford. A family memorial is being planned for family and friends at Pleasington near Forestburg Alberta, where Mom’s ashes will be buried alongside Dad.

RICE, Latham B An old soldier promoted to glory! Survived by loving wife and best friend Gina, children Laird and Tara, their spouses, and five grandchildren. He enlisted in the military at age 17 and retired at age 60 after what he call a “beyond the best” career, going from gunner to Deputy Director of the DND General Safety Program. His flying hobby amassed over 1,000 flight hours that included parachute drops, glider towing and peaked with his year as Chief Flying Instructor at CFB Trenton’s Flying Club. Bernie accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior in 1977 at the Portage PAOC church, and served his Lord faithfully and intelligently both in his life and career. Bernie has run the race and now rests in peace. Memorial Service Thurs Feb. 28 at Northview Community Church, 32040 Downes Road. (northview.org) 1Cor 9:25

Lucy Irene Garry (Hennigar) Born June 21, 1916, passed away February 16, 2013 with her daughter Elaine by her side. She was predeceased by Glen, her husband of 60 years in 2002; her daughter Diane in 2010; her close friend Colin Perrin in 2006; and ten of her eleven siblings in Nova Scotia. She is survived by her children; Robert (Marie), Donald (Bettina), Elaine (Elliott), grandchildren and great grandchildren, her sister Edith and numerous relatives in Nova Scotia. Mum met Dad in Windsor Nova Scotia where she was working as a Registered Nurse. They were married in October 1942 and Dad soon left for war. He was not to meet his first son, Robert, for more than a year after his birth in 1943. After the war, they moved to BC where Mom worked at Grace Hospital supporting the family while Dad attended UBC. Diane was born there in 1948, then the family moved to Kelowna where Donald was born in 1951. In 1955, the family moved briefly to Langley where Elaine was born, then off to Lillooet for 3 years before taking up permanent residence in Mission in 1958. Mom worked in Public Health until she eyed up the shiny new hospital in Mission in 1965. She worked in the ER for many years but was a versatile nurse who could work in any department. In 1984, she retired at age 68. Mum and Dad travelled extensively in their retirement and enjoyed those years to the fullest. Mum was a fun loving person who enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends and contract bridge with Charlie McPherson; a common sight down at the Esso bar on the Fraser, was Mum and 3 friends, bar rigs with bells on, card table set up, playing bridge and drinking wine. She rarely missed a Saturday hairdo with Alice for 40 years. She treasured her roses, many of which still grow in her daughter’s garden. After Dad passed away, Mum eventually lived at Pleasantview Care Home where the care she received by the loving staff was exemplary. True to her beloved profession, she maintained her compassion and care of others in her final years. She was loved by many and will be truly missed…peace be your journey Mom. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
