Public meeting on chlorination set for Tuesday Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

It wasn’t by accident that city officials rented the biggest venue in town — the Chilliwack Alliance Church — for the public meeting Feb. 26 to discuss the touchy subject of drinking water chlorination. Mayor Sharon Gaetz said they wanted to give as many Chilliwack residents as possible a chance to voice opinions about chlorination of Chilliwack’s pristine drinking water at the event to be hosted by Fraser Health. Glen MacPherson, head of public works, gave council a detailed report Tuesday on Chilliwack’s official reaction to Fraser Health’s chlorination edict, mapping out where they’re at now, and the next steps. The formal response to Fraser Health had three main points, he said. They are asking for data, or the actual evidence, upon which the chlorination decision was made; for consideration of alternative options; and, for a public consultation opportunity for Chilliwack residents. This came on the heels of the order by Fraser Health from Feb. 1 for Chilliwack to begin adding a secondary disinfectant, chlorine, to the awardwinning drinking water, and to continually monitor the levels of the disinfectant. It’s caused a maelstrom of reaction at city hall. Hundreds of emails from angry residents as well as media calls have poured in to the mayor’s office. Some broadcast reporters from outside Chilliwack are getting the facts wrong, adding to the confusion and anger. So is there E.coli in Chilliwack water? The head of public works posed the question himself, and then answered it: “There is a big resounding ‘no’ there.” MacPherson emphasized the three incidents of “minimal” E.coli detection, in 2009, 2011 and 2012, were isolated and confined to hillside reservoirs, which operate separately from the main water distribution system. “Other than the three incidents, there is no E.coli in the water, and certainly it is not there today,” he said. He underlined that Fraser Health has acknowledged that it views Chilliwack’s groundwater source, the Sardis/Vedder Aquifer as “excellent,” and sees no risk in it. “What can I say, looking over 25 years of records, there was zero E.coli was found in the main distribution system,” MacPherson said. A slide at a local elementary school was torched again this week, another act of petty vandalism that is a common nuisance at Chilliwack schools. “It’s unfortunate it happened. It’s a great place to play...and it’s one less thing for kids to play on,” says Promontory Heights Elementary School principal Joe Krajnyak. The slide was previously burned twice in 2011. This time the damage was less extensive, with only a six inch hole as result. But this made the slide unusable and unsafe, and the City of Chilliwack has already taken it down.

Two weeks ago, the same school had some windows broken in, and thieves took a fire extinguisher, for which the district will need to pay. That was one incident of a spate of 28 acts of vandalism at Chilliwack schools since January, most of which were break-ins. The norm is five or fewer per month. “They appear to be related. This isn’t an upward trend that we’re experiencing...This is an anomalous blip in the stats around break-ins,” says district secretary-treasurer Maureen Carradice. “The vast majority of the vandalism that we experience is defacement of the building.” RCMP caught two people in the act of a break-in on Feb. 10,

and laid charges after a chase. The Chilliwack residents, a 32-year-old woman and 34-yearold man, were released on conditions and are due to appear in court on Feb. 26. RCMP speculate that the thieves were after electronic equipment, and expect the charges will end this year’s unusually high rate of vandalism. The school district spends about $200,000 of its annual facility grant on various loss prevention measures. Lately, some schools have received upgraded security systems, motion sensors, cameras, and reinforced doors and hardware. The district also installed several pricey roll shutters and security screens. The “dark campus” program, in

place for five years, is meant to deter graffiti, but may be facilitating theft, noted Carradice at a school board meeting last week. Krajnyak says that the district is doing all it can, because of the challenge of monitoring and predicting vandalism. “I don’t think anyone can do any more than can be done. It’s random acts. You can’t prevent random acts of vandalism.” Promontory Heights is one of the schools farthest from the city centre. “There are a lot of false alarms,” adds Carradice. The City’s vandalism costs were $87,785 in the final quarter of 2012, a $22,333 decrease from 2011, according to a report released Tuesday.

Second chance for Chances fails to secure dancing Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

eration by Mayor Sharon Gaetz this week, but it failed in a 4-2 vote, with Coun. Sue Attrill and Coun. Jason Lum voting in favour. Chances officials were applying for an “entertainment endorsement” that would allow dancing, talent shows, singalongs and other types of patron interaction at the gaming centre restaurant, called The Well, as well as on the patio. Chilliwack teens are getting a new Saturday night hangout space, complete with big screen TVs, PlayStation 3 games, food, a dance floor, and lots more. LOL Lounge’s grand opening will include a speed texting championship, and an air hockey and foosball tournament, on Feb. 23 from 7 p.m. until midnight. Organizers Jay DeWitt and Jeff Bonham insist that this isn’t another sporadic teen club, and promise that the Saturday-only lounge will offer something different every weekend, including hip hop lessons and a dance competition on Feb. 30, and air band contests, Vancouver Canucks game nights, local live bands, and amateur DJs on other days. DeWitt, who started a production company at 16 years old, was Play Abby’s general manager last year, and is the current marketing manager at Spencerzone Bounce, has been seeking a way to reduce the rates of drugs and alcohol among teenagers. “I’ve spoken to so many parents about the problems in Fraser Valley...about the real issue that needs to be dealt with,” he says. “I’d love to make a difference, and I think I can here.” DeWitt and Bonham created the event out of an “unbelievable” reaction from parents and teens who feel that Chilliwack badly needs such a drop-in centre. The lounge will be using the large-capacity entertainment facility Spencerzone Bounce at 8705 Young Road, but organizers will deflate most of the bouncy castles — keeping one as an obstacle

course — and fill the space with leather couches, TVs, and games. For promotion, the partners have luckily won the attention of a local high school student, who has turned into a highly dedicated foot soldier. “I think it’s important because it’s another alternative for teenagers to actually go, hang out, instead of being at home bored or wandering the streets, going out drinking or doing drugs,” says Tristina-Lee Quarton, a Chilliwack Secondary School senior. Quarton, who has been working with the organizers since meeting them at a city dog park, has been making classroom announcements at her school this week, postering the halls with a

flyer that she redid, and getting her friends to publicize the event at their youth groups. She also worked on the name, which she thinks flows better than the original Club Infusion. Quarton believes LOL Lounge will be a hit, because it’s safer than a club setting, more varied than a church group, and fills a gap in Chilliwack. “(Teenagers) know they can go there, and have fun, and know that they’re safe, and nothing wrong could happen,” she explains. The “good, clean fun” comes complete with a dress code: no bandanas, no baggy clothes and no underwear showing, no extremely short shorts, nothing gang-affiliat-

ed, and no curse words on clothing. And of course, there’s no alcohol or drugs on site, and no outside food or drinks. LOL Lounge is the first venture from DeWitt and Bonham’s local marketing and promotion company Simply Awesome Live Events, which will also start hosting a doggy daycare in March. The lounge will be open every Saturday night, with a $10 admission charge. Pizza and pop will be sold on site. Organizers hope to add a Friday night lounge later on. Chilliwack senior killed after crashing into tree Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Traffic east of Chilliwack was shut down late Monday afternoon as emergency responders attended a sin-

gle-vehicle crash on Yale Road that claimed the life of an 83-year-old Chilliwack woman. Doris Lovejoy was the lone occupant in a green 1994 Toyota Camry that left

the road and slammed into a tree in 49600 block of Yale Road. Her small Shih Tzu dog Smudgie was injured in the crash, but is recovering. RCMP say the cause of

death will be determined by autopsy. RCMP acknowledged the immediate actions of the passing motorists who assisted in suppressing a fire which had

Training house fire deliberately set: fire official An abandoned home that Chilliwack firefighters had hoped to use for training purposes, turned into the real thing Tuesday night. The two-storey home, located in the 46000 block of Prairie Central Road, was in flames when firefighters from three halls arrived just before 10 p.m. The fire had been deliberately set, said assistant fire chief Ian Josephson. The Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP fire are investigating. The house, which was not occupied, was being set up for the eventual use by the fire department for training. Firefighters confined and extinguished the fire, but not before the house was extensively damaged. It is not considered salvageable. There were no firefighter injuries. RCMP arrests ‘most wanted’ Local RCMP have arrested one of Chilliwack’s “most wanted” fugitives last Friday, and will keep him in custody until his next court appearance. 34 year-old Michael Joshua Kerr was on the run during more than four months with multiple outstanding arrest warrants. In April 2012, police say they caught a man red-handed during a breaking and entering attempt. The man rode his bike to the Fairfield Island area, entered a residential carport, and broke into the adjoining storage room. He then proceeded to steal frozen food and meat from a freezer, as well as a carton of beer. Police arrested him as he was leaving. Kerr was charged with breaking and entering, and breach of

VICTORIA – The B.C. Liberals’ pre-election budget proposes to implement income tax increases on business and higher-income indi-

leader Adrian Dix has repeatedly promised to increase the corporate rate to 12 per cent, where it was in 2008. In Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s budget, tabled Tuesday, personal income taxes for those

earning $150,000 or more would rise 2.1 per cent to 16.8 per cent for two years, starting next January. That increase is to be rolled back to the current rate of 14.7 per cent in 2015, de Jong said.

De Jong stressed that B.C.’s personal income tax rates are still the lowest in Canada for those earning up to $122,000 a year. The Liberals plan to balance the budget partly by selling a portfolio of city assets, valued at an estimated $700 million. Dix has indicated that if the NDP forms government, he would impose an income tax increase for those earning $150,000 or more a year, with specifics promised in the NDP election platform.

Show us the evidence It’s time for a deep breath in the debate surrounding the chlorination of Chilliwack’s drinking water. Any decision on the future of the city’s water supply should be based on science, not emotion. The issue is not about the danger of chlorination, but whether there is a necessity for it. Two weeks ago Chilliwack residents were stunned to hear the Fraser Health Authority order the city to begin chlorinating its water. Residents here are rightly proud of the water they drink – a pride that may have surprised Fraser Health’s Dr. Marcus Lem when he told city council that Chilliwack’s water might taste good, but he wouldn’t let his daughter touch it. Reaction was swift. An online petition already has more than 3,000 signatories. The anger is based on the arbitrary decision by Fraser Health to order Chilliwack to chlorinate its water based on evidence of E.coli contamination in just three instances over the past five years. There is no evidence the bacteria entered the water system, or that it made anyone ill. The incidents were isolated, the City of Chilliwack insists, and not

indicative of the overall condition of the local water supply. That position has since been echoed by Fraser Health, but not before the reputation of Chilliwack’s water supply has been disparaged by wildly inaccurate media reports and online speculation. Chilliwack’s water is unique. Unlike most municipalities, it comes from an underground aquifer that protects it and filters it from the kind of environmental incursions found in water drawn from a lake or reservoir. That purity — maintained through rigorous testing and ongoing maintenance — keeps the water safe. For Fraser Health, however, those efforts are clearly not enough. It insists that chlorine, a disinfectant used around the world to make water safe to drink, is the only answer. True, chlorine would pose little risk to residents. It’s not arsenic. But is it necessary? Certainly issues of public health should not be decided by petition. However, they should be based on empirical data that is transparent, verifiable and justifiable. British Columbia’s gas boom is real, all right VICTORIA – Whether Christy Clark’s government survives the May election or not, the natural gas “Prosperity Fund” idea floated in last week’s throne speech is a useful one. B.C. is poised to join Alberta in the upper rank of energy producing jurisdictions, with an expanding network of natural gas collection, refining and processing into liquid (LNG) for export. Clark’s pre-election throne speech proposed a resource fund similar to Alberta’s Heritage Fund that would be reserved for debt reduction and major projects, rather than spent on programs, which tends to happen under the political pressure of four-year election cycles. Opposition politicians and media commentators have dismissed this as a pre-election stunt. They note that the LNG industry in B.C. doesn’t exist yet, and may never produce the hundreds of billions

of dollars projected over the next 30 years. I returned for a visit to B.C.’s northeast earlier this month, and I can tell you the gas boom is real. My parents homesteaded east of Dawson Creek near the Alberta border in 1962, and I recall when our farm was drilled for gas by Tom Gulf Canada 40 FLETCHER years ago. Many more gas wells have been drilled since then, and country roads have been widened and numbered for industrial traffic. Hydraulic fracturing, already in use when our farm was drilled, has been combined with directional drilling to open up huge new supplies. A farming community called

Montney is the latest hot play, yielding not only shale gas but petroleum liquids, which are valuable for diluting heavy oil among other things. B.C. has never seen this kind of international investment interest before. Initial projects have been joined by global players such as British Gas, and Mitsubishi, a key player in Japan’s replacement of its devastated nuclear power program. Spectra Energy, which operates one of North America’s biggest gas processing plants at Fort Nelson and has another one under construction nearby, has begun work on a third plant near Dawson Creek. Spectra and British Gas have also proposed the latest of several pipelines, to move all this gas to an LNG terminal at Prince Rupert. The Kitimat-Prince Rupert region now has at least five proposed terminals, with inves-

tors including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil and state players from China and Korea. All this is happening as shale gas is developed across the United States as well. As with oil, Canada is a captive of the U.S. market, and the flood of new gas supply has the North American price at rock bottom. At least B.C. hopes it’s the bottom. Gas royalties passed forest income to the B.C. treasury many years ago, and now as the forest industry struggles to recover, the province faces tumbling revenues from gas. Why would B.C.’s shale gas be seen as a priority for new global investment in LNG? For one thing, we’re a stable democratic country with a mature industry and competent regulation. Secondly, the shipping advantage of the Kitimat and Prince Rupert ports to the Pacific Rim

has finally been recognized internationally, as coal, forest products, grain and container traffic has climbed in recent years. B.C. has another advantage that appears to be increasingly important. The shale gas deposits are deep, under a kilometre or more of solid rock, and most are in remote, sparsely inhabited locations. That adds cost to the pipeline system, but it has a benefit. At the beginning of the year I predicted that the international protest movement that dishonestly targets Alberta oil would soon turn to demonizing natural gas. That pseudo-scientific attack has begun, right here in B.C. I’ll have more on that in a subsequent column. The City of Chilliwack performs 42 water quality tests each week or 2,184 every year or 10,920 tests over the last five years during which three reservoir results tested positive for e.coli bacteria. I am totally aghast at the immense power the Fraser Health Authority must have to foist chlorination, a low grade chemical poisoning, on 80,000 people on such flimsy evidence when our aquifers are doing just fine, thank you. No cases of E.coli infection have been reported during this time, and our water is some of the best to be found anywhere. So, no, I am not worried about E.coli in our tap water, and I will keep on drinking it and enjoying it. However, I am worried about

a few other important public health issues that do not seem to merit much attention from our health authorities. I was shocked about news of superbugs in our hospitals until I personally observed cleaning after a patient was discharged. The same cloth was used for wiping the bed, bedside table, windowsill, food tray and sink. What also concerns me are some of the “questionably-processed” foods we are forced to consume – milk containing antibiotics and growth hormones, “pink slime” in ground meat and processed meat products, produce polluted with dozens of carcinogenic herbicides and pesticides and thickly coated with “food grade petroleum products,” and the unlabelled 70 per

Nine months of fundraising has paid off, and the Chilliwack Cultural Centre is getting new state-of-the-art sound equipment that will be freely available to users of the theatre. The centre is buying 20 cordless microphones at a cost of $30,000, which will allow performing arts groups to use the 584-seat main theatre without needing to rent expensive equipment. “Local groups using the space won’t have to spend between one and three thousand dollars on renting microphones,” says Michael Cade, director of the Chilliwack Arts and Cultural Centre Society, which manages

City says water supply is safe All ground water is at risk, but Chilliwack has a “comprehensive” water protection plan in place. The aquifer is more at risk from a chemical spill, he said, than from bacterial contamination. However, the integrity of the distribution system, with its 450 km of pipes and cross-connections, and its vulnerability, was Fraser Health’s main concern. This is despite the fact that Chilliwack spends $3 million a year in rigorous maintenance of its pipes and reservoirs, which is more per capita than other communities. “We take extra precautions,” he said. Chilliwack is the first municipality in Canada to have “mixers” bring in cold, fresh water to be added to hillside reservoir water in the summer when the heat is beating down on them, to bring down temperatures. City staff sample the water twice as often as required by law, with 44 samples taken per week,

or 2,500 a year. But the sampling program does not eliminate risk, he said. It’s the size and complexity of the water system, which serves 80,000, which warrants the chlorination, according to health officials. There are no “nonchemical” options for disinfection, he said. It started in September 2007, when two teens at a Nova Scotia high school stood up for a younger student. David Shepherd and Travis Price, both in Grade 12, heard about a Grade 9 student at their school who had been bullied and threatened for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of school. They decided they should do something about it and bought 50 pink shirts and tank tops to wear to school the next day. They also went online to round up support for their anti-bullying cause, which they dubbed a “sea of pink.” It worked. The next day, dozens of students were outfitted with the discount shirts, but even better, hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some from head to toe. The bullies were reportedly never heard from again. This year, Feb. 27 is Pink Shirt Day in B.C. and other parts of Canada, an annual anti-bullying event that started after the now-famous 2007 “sea of pink” cam-

paign. The need for awareness and action against bullying remains as strong as ever say those involved in the pink event, including local radio station CKNW, Black Press, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, and London Drugs, where people can buy the official pink shirts for 2013. “Awareness of what bullying is and understanding that it hurts is important,” says Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver president and CEO Carolyn Tuckwell. “It isn’t just a rite of passage. It doesn’t have to happen. And it’s relevant to everyone, whether in school, after school or in the workplace.” According to www.bullyingcanada.ca, as many as 25 per cent of children in Grades 4 to 6 have been bullied and approximately one in 10 children have bullied others, while a 2004 study published in the Medical Journal of Pediatrics found that about one in seven Canadian children aged 11 to 16 are victims of bullying.

It is important to recognize what bullying is, and that it happens in many forms – verbally, socially, physically and online (cyber bullying), says Tuckwell. “By wearing pink, people show they’re making that commitment, to not let bullying happen,” she says. Tuckwell and others emphasize that the pink shirt is secondary to raising awareness about bullying and getting people involved. B.C. is no stranger to tragedy related to bullying. From Surrey’s 14-year-old Hamed Nastoh, who jumped off the Patullo Bridge and killed himself after leaving a note behind blaming the constant bullying he endured at school, to Mission’s DawnMarie Wesley, 14, who committed suicide by hanging herself after relentless bullying, to Port Coquitlam’s Amanda Todd, 15, who killed herself after posting a video on YouTube talking about her experiences with cyber bullying, there are countless

told and untold stories that remain horrific. The provincial government has taken steps to address bullying in recent years, including a Ministry of Education resource brochure for parents in 14 languages that can be found online at www.bced.gov. bc.ca/sco. Net proceeds benefit the CKNW Orphans Fund in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC. The Boys and Girls Clubs offer programs that foster self-esteem, social engagement, academic success, inclusion, acceptance, respect for self and others, and connection to community. The CKNW Orphans Fund is committed to enhancing the lives of children with physical, mental and social challenges living in BC communities. The fund includes children who are bullied under the scope of the fund’s work, because these children will need extra support for their development.

This year is Harvey’s 20th behind the Chiefs bench and the team has made the playoffs in each of those 20 years, writes Jacob Bestebroer

Showcase comes back to Chilliwack The 2013-14 BCHL season will start in Chilliwack, with the BCHL Showcase returning to the Fraser Valley Sept. 6-8. The first-ever BCHL Showcase was held in Chilliwack last year, with 16 teams playing two games apiece over three hockeypacked days. The event attracted more than 200 National Hockey League and collegiate scouts, and feedback was almost universally positive. “It’s definitely high on our priority list to come out again,” said Harvard Crimson head coach Ted Donato. “We have a lot of respect for the BCHL and we’re confident will find more players we want to bring into our program.” Two Chilliwack Chiefs, Luke Esposito and Philip Zielonka, committed to Harvard next season, large-

ly based on what Donato saw at the showcase. “The BCHL has a rich history of preparing players for college scholarships and the potential of a professional hockey career,” Vancouver Canucks scout Thomas Gradin added. “To see all the players in the same place at one time is a great opportunity for scouts and hockey administrators.” After the success of last year, BCHL commissioner John Grisdale called it a ‘nobrainer’ to bring the showcase back to Chilliwack. “Having it in a location that provides the opportunity for scouts and teams to get in and out with minimal cost and time was really important,” he said at a Wednesday morning press conference. “The inaugural showcase surpassed our most optimistic expecta-

tions and the response we received from players, coaches and scouts was overwhelmingly positive.” A financial impact report prepared after last year’s event showed a total economic impact of between $540,000 and $750,000 for the City of Chilliwack, with local hotels and restaurants netting $170,000. As they did last year, Chiefs president Glen Ringdal and former mayor Clint Hames will co-chair the event. “This year we anticipate attracting a lot more fans from outside the Chilliwack area, which will only add to the economic impact,” Ringdal said. Harvey Smyl was all smiles at the press conference, knowing he’s being spared an extra bus trip. His top priority is sending players on to post-second-

ary stops, and he considers the showcase an essential tool. “It’s the perfect scenario for the players because of our location, and the ability to get 200-plus scouts in our building is just incredible,” he said. “Our building is one of the most beautiful in the country. We have great fans and a great group of people organizing the showcase. I think John (Grisdale) would agree he couldn’t be happier to have this group running it.” Just like last year, each team will play one home and one away game at the showcase, with results counting in the regular season standings. The Chilliwack Chiefs 1992-93 season was not a good one. It started okay. At the 32 game mark they had won 16 games. Certainly not up to the standards of the previous two editions of the Chiefs, but respectable and it looked like the team would at least make the playoffs. Then it all fell apart. They won four of their remaining 28 games and finished well out of the playoffs. The lowlight of that season came on Mar. 3 when the Chiefs were defeated 22-3 in Penticton. Current Chiefs assistant coach Doug Ast was on that team. If you get the chance, ask him about it. He loves talking about it. He also claims he doesn’t know what his plus-minus was in that game. I shouldn’t chirp him though. He did score two of the three Chiefs goals that night. It was time for a change and that change was the hiring of Harvey Smyl. This year is Harvey’s 20th behind the Chiefs bench and the team has made the playoffs in each of those 20 years. That’s the longest streak in the BCHL. This year’s playoffs will start on Mar. 15. For Coastal conference teams including the Chiefs, the first two rounds will unfortunately (in my opinion) be best-of-five series. Should a team go the five game distance in each of the first two rounds, they will have played 10 games in 13 days. We don’t know for sure

who the Chiefs will play in the first round and they have not yet clinched home ice, but that could happen this weekend. The most likely scenario has the Chiefs finishing second in the Mainland division and having home ice versus Prince George. But mathematically the Chiefs could still move up to first or drop down to third. A first round series versus Prince George would be entertaining. Despite the Chiefs having won six of seven games against them this season, the two teams are fairly evenly matched. Only one of those games was really one sided, a 6-0 Chiefs win in Prince George. The Langley Rivermen will likely finish fourth, but mathematically they could still move up to third or finish out of the playoffs. The Chiefs will play the Rivermen four times in their last six games of the season. For the Chiefs to catch Surrey and finish first, they are going to have to win at least three of those four games. Despite Langley’s sub .500 record, that will not be easy. The Rivermen have a good power play, good penalty killing and they can score goals. Their weakness has been allowing goals but they’ve been getting better in that regard. This weekend the Chiefs are in Langley Friday night before returning to home ice to host Prince George Saturday. jb@chilliwackchiefs.net

MARTIN Lloyd Edward Aug 15, 1949 â€“ Feb 7, 2013 It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we say goodbye to a much-loved husband, faMARTIN ther, grandfather and friend who was taken from us far too soon on February 7, 2013 following a courageous battle with cancer. Lloyd was born in Chilliwack on August 15, 1949 and was the eldest of five siblings. Left to mourn his passing are, his wife and soulmate, Anne Creber-Girbav;his sons: Jason Martin (Adriana), Justin Martin (Andrea); grandchildren: Lexus, Logan, Addison and Liam Martin. His stepsons: Scott, Stephen and Sheldon Girbav; brother, John Martin; sisters: Lori Broome and Kathy Buit (Dick) Uncle Bill Martin (Carol); and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents Phil and Emma Martin (nee Lunzmann) and his sister Cindy Martin. Lloyd lived his life for his family and was a good friend to many. He was very involved in his sonsâ€™ lives from the time they could skate and play hockey and throw a softball, never wanting to miss a game. He spent many hours in cold rinks and on the road traveling to out-oftown games and tournaments cheering his boys on and assisting in coaching them and their teammates. He loved his Vancouver Canucks, BC Lions and Seattle Seahawks and, of course, yearly escapes in January to the Vallarta Sun. Besides his family, his other

love was cars, especially Corvettes, of which he owned a few. He was so very proud of his last Red Corvette which he re-built just a few years ago from the frame up. He worked for many years in the autowrecking industry. He knew his cars and he knew their parts. Lloyd will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a Good Guy with a Big Heart and a Huge Smile by all who knew him. Special thanks to Dr. Page and Dr. Bole for their kindness and compassion, also Nurse Jen at CGH Emerg., Dr.â€™s Leong and Schellenberg and Clinical trial nurses Arlissa and Theresa at the Surrey BCCA for their care and support during Lloydâ€™s lengthy battle with this awful disease. The family held a private remembrance on February 11, 2013. A Celebration of Lloydâ€™s Life will be held on April 20, 2013 at the Camp River Hall 50246 Camp River Rd. Martha McKay passed away peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2013 in ChilliMcKAY wack at the age of 85 years. She was born on April 30, 1927 in Trochu, Alberta. Martha is survived by her son Callum, and daughters: Maureen and Susan; as well as her grandchildren: Jasmyn, Jesse, Jacob, Brayden, Madison, Jaylene, Jake and Samantha and one great-grandson Jaxon. She was predeceased by her loving husband Norm, and son Bruce. As a young woman, Martha bravely left the hardworking and isolating farm life in Alberta behind her and headed for the big city of Chilliwack where she experienced freedom and independence.Â She waitressed, met wonderful life-long friends such as Rose and Lil, and became a Nurseâ€™s Aide.Â She met Norm, her life partner, moved to the Kootneyâ€™s, married at the grand ole age of 30, had a family and explored and enjoyed every mountain and hiking trail within reach.Â She gifted her love and respect for the earth to her children, who have paid it forward to their children.Â She practiced yoga daily and ate flax seeds well before it was popular.Â She was happy in life. I believe she is still happy and resting in peace. Marthaâ€™s family would like to publicly thank the outstanding and honest service Oâ€™Connorâ€™s Automotive always provided to our Mom. S u s a n Moore passed away peacefully at the age of 87 with her family at her side on FebruMOORE ary 15, 2013 at the Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack following a brief battle with cancer. She is predeceased by her husband Capt. Philip John Moore; parents: Daniel and Susie Hoppe; her siblings at a very young age, Daniel and Laura; as well as the oldest Hoppe family children, Frank and Ella; and younger sister, Marie. She is survived by her sons: Philip (Debbie), Fred (Teresa) and David (Vicki); her grandchildren: Nathan, Vanessa (Jason), Riley and Kailey; her great grandchild, Seth; and her sisters: Alice Hoppe and Bertha Vogt who reside in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Sue was born the fourth child March 17, 1925 in Orenburg, Russia. She emigrated with this traditional Mennonite family, farming through Alberta and Manitoba before settling in Greendale BC in 1931. She married Phil in Chilliwack in 1951, and after a tour in Europe during his time with the PPCLI, Sue came home to Chilliwack in August 1967 with Phil and the three boys where they were able to reconnect with her family and built happy memories. She will spend eternity with her husband Phil and part of her will always be with him on the beaches of Denman Island and in the hearts of those she has left behind. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Cascade Hospice and the many family and friends that made Sueâ€™s end of life experience so special. The family would like to extend our heart-filled thanks to the doctors and all the staff at Chilliwackâ€™s Cascade Hospice. She is survived by her brother John Lactin; sisters: Helen Sookerukoff (Peter) and Joan Saviskoff; daughter, Natasha Gilbertson (Gil); sons: Robert Sookerukoff, Darcy Vancha; and daughter Angela Vancha; grandchildren: Destinye Garbet (Kris), Contessa Sookerukoff, Jesse Vancha and Brendan Vancha; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks you to pay it forward in a random act of kindness to someone in need in her memory. Elizabethâ€™s final wishes were to be cremated and to have no service.

Passed away on February 15, 2013 at the age of 79. She is predeceased by her husband Ron. WASLEN She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Kim); son, Ken (Tracey); son, Kevin (Cathy); and grandchildren: Brittany, Tristan, and Kendall. After moving to Yarrow in 1969 and establishing their farm and greenhouses, Eileen became very involved in her community. She was a member of the Tennetteâ€™s and a founding member of the Yarrow Ratepayerâ€™s Association. Among her many projects she was a driving force behind the first Yarrow Days. Her proudest achievement though, would be that after years of fundraising through bingos at the Foresterâ€™s Hall and community dinners in Yarrow, was to finally see the construction of the new Yarrow Community Hall. When she wasnâ€™t busy manageing the hall, you would find her

in her greenhouses or flowerbeds. Yarrow didnâ€™t have a bigger booster than Eileen and her work ethic and willingness to take on any task will be missed by the community. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Yarrow Community Hall (of course!) on March 17, 2013 from 1 pm â€“ 4 pm. Refreshments will be provided. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Yarrow Ratepayers Association or the charity of your choice.

Dr. Andrew B. Young The life and career of Dr. Andrew B. Young â€” family physician, professional delegate, community organizer, loyal companion and beloved father, came to a close on Wednesday, February 13 in the late afternoon. Dr. Young had struggled with an escalating illness since the previous summer, and was transferred to hospice care in Chilliwack only days before, where he passed away surrounded by his treasured family and devoted friends. He was 78. A profound sense of loss is deeply felt by his wife, Marilyn; by his daughters: Cathy and Sharon; by his sons: Brian, Don and David; by his grandchildren: James, Lindsay, Daryl, Andrew, Mackenzie and Madalynn; by his brother Archie, and his sisters, Isobel and Jean, as well as by his many nieces and nephews and their families. This sad deprivation is shared by a sizeable company of Dr.Youngâ€™s life-long friends, and by the community, the profession and the country which he served with such enthusiasm, and in which he so earnestly believed. â€œDrewâ€? was born in 1934, the eighth child of John and Mary Young (nee Bryson). His parents had immigrated to British Columbia from Scotland Ă€ve years before, his father taking up a new situation as herdsman and stock manager to the nascent Faculty of Agriculture at the University of British Columbia. Excepting the loss of two brothers, one to illness and one to the Canadian war effort, Drewâ€™s young life was blithe and happy, spent at University Hill School under the sternly benevolent tutelage of Miss Skelton, playing basketball and baseball with bosom pals Don Gunning and Herb Forward, serving on the student council, and assisting his father in the running of the University Dairy. Drewâ€™s memories of those years were of a â€˜forest freedomâ€™ and youthful riot such as is known by too few youngsters today. He went on to attend UBC in the Faculty of Sciences, where a strong academic showing allowed him to enter the sixth class of the new UBC Medical School, having completed only three years as an undergraduate. He graduated UBC Med in 1959, followed by an internship at Calgary General Hospital, having married the love of his life, Marilyn Gowan, two years before. The young couple settled in the eastern Fraser Valley, in the farming and then military town of Chilliwack, and had Ă€ve children. Drew took up a large family practice with full hospital privileges, running a clinic with his brother Dr. Archie Young, a partnership that was to last for 35 years. â€œDr. Drewâ€? became known to the people of the valley as a physician of exemplary patience and compassion, in whose presence no ailing soul ever felt neglected or forgotten. For Marilyn and his children at home, for the Ă edgling Chilliwack YMCA, for his colleagues and his community, he built a good life. The Young family occupied its time with sport-skiing and swimming, golf and basketball, board games and bridge; with summer travel to virtually every corner of the B.C. wilderness; and with reading and study of all manner of topics, from Canadian politics to Darwinian evolution, these often occasioning perfervid discussion around the family dinner table, where Drewâ€™s skills as moderator, were much required. Christmas Eve at the Young household was typically

a crowded affair, involving a large cohort of family friends, as well as a multitude of Drewâ€™s patients from all walks of Valley life, dropping off tokens of gratitude to the family doctor who had shown them such empathy in time of need. Apart from his private practice, Dr. Youngâ€™s career as public servant and representative of the Canadian medical profession was perhaps the contribution in which he took most pride. In 1976 he became a delegate to the B.C. Medical Associationâ€™s board of directors, the beginning of a commitment that was to last for more than a decade. He was eventually to serve with distinction as Chairman of the B.C.M.A. Economic Committee, Chairman of the Canadian Medical Association Council on Health Care, delegate to the C.M.A. General Council, Member At Large of the B.C.M.A. Executive, as well as a member of a many other professional commissions. His colleagues remember him as an accomplished â€˜consensus builderâ€™, whose inexhaustible goodwill and rational faith in his peers was an inspiration. In 1994 the UBC Medical Alumi presented him the Dr. Wallace Wilson Leadership Award. This was followed in 1996 by the B.C.M.A. Dr. David Bachop Gold Medal in recognition of an outstanding contribution to health care by a family practitioner in the province; and in 2003 by the B.C.M.A. Silver Medal of Service for dedication to patient care and service to organized medicine. If Drew Young himself had been given the opportunity to sum up the entirety of his own active and prosperous life, he would have said simply that he felt so lucky, and so very grateful. In lieu of Ă owers or any other offerings, donations can be made to the â€œDrew Young Memorial Fundâ€?, being held In Trust by the â€œChilliwack Hospital & Health Care Foundationâ€? (CHHCF). Funds allocated to this memorial will, at the discretion of Dr. Youngâ€™s family, be donated to a cause related to Hospital/Health Care intiatives at Chilliwack General Hospital.
