Eating Together returns Celebrity chef Vikram Vij will help launch third annual event this week by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter

A

popular Vancouver chef will lend his celebrity tonight Wednesday)to the media launch of Touchstone Family Association’s third annual Eating Together campaign.

Eating Together—set for Feb. 24 to March 3—aims to raise awareness of the benefits of families eating together and raises funds for Touchstone’s Front Porch Program, which provides counselling and support services to families. Joining the 6 p.m. launch at AutoWest BMW in Richmond is Vikram Vij, an award-winning chef and co-owner of Vij’s and Rangoli restaurants in Vancouver, and co-author of two best-selling Indian cookbooks. Touchstone’s week-long Eating Together campaign is close to Vij’s heart and is one of the reasons he created Vij’s At Home, his own name brand of frozen foods, which will be showcased at the event. Eating Together encourages families to eat together through a series of activities such as community meals, cooking classes, restaurant participation and the distribution of awareness information. Organizers point to research that shows families that regularly share meals connect more effectively, have fewer problems and stay together. •For more information about the week’s Serving Richmond Since 1984 activities and to register, visit Chef Vikram Vij will help launch Touchstone Family Association’s third annual Eating Together campaign. eatingtogether.ca.

Community centres host meals

R

esearch has shown that children, youth and other social groups benefit in many ways when families eat together. During Eating Together week, Touchstone has teamed up with the B.C. Dairy Association Better Together BC to deliver this presentation for the community to find out how you can support people in your community to cook and eat together more often using the tools and resources associated with Better Together BC.

As part of the Eating Together Campaign 2013, this program will help families and community leaders learn how to make eating times a positive experience. This program will be held on February 28th from 7-8:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor program room at the Brighouse (Main) Branch, 7700 Minoru Gate. To register, visit any branch of Richmond Public Library, call 604-231-6413 or register online at www.yourlibrary.ca/whatson.cfm. The program will also be held on Friday, March 1 at the Thompson Community Centre board room from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The speaker will be Sydney Massey, director of nutrition education for the BC Dairy Association. Cooking Classes

Popular cooking classes return to Eating Together Eating Together is a one-week celebration of families—spending as much time around the table as we can. Touchstone Family Association is offering the following challenge to Richmond families: How many times will you eat together between Feb. 24 to March 3? According to Touchstone, here are five good reasons to eat together: •Communication is key! Find out what your kid are thinking – give them a chance to find out more about you. •Role model manners, consistency and stability. They’re watching you and you can give them a great sense of safety and security through regular get-togethers. •Expand their world. A chance to experience choosing, cooking and tasting new foods. •Resolve behavioural issues. Research is clear – frequent family dinners are associated with lower rates of smoking, drinking and illegal drug use. •Improve grades. Its true, research shows, academic performance increases with the number of meals eaten with family. Back from popular demand, Touchstone has lined up five cooking classes again this year. • Chef Shane Lamb of American Grille. Monday, Feb. 25, 6 – 9 p.m. • Stephanie Yuen, food blogger and author of East Meets West. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 6 – 9 p.m. • Chef Nathan Tymchuk from the Richmond Boathouse. Thursday, Feb 28, 6 – 9 p.m. •Chef Ian LaiChef Ian Lai from Urban Agriculture Consulting. Friday, March 1, 6 – 9 p.m. •Chef Matt Stevenson from Moxie’s Richmond. Saturday, March 2, 9 a.m. – noon. Space is limited, so register at touchstone@touchfam.ca or Richmond residents eat together at chef Ian Lai's cooking class from last year's event. see eatingtogether.ca for more
