Tiguan
Touareg
Since its 2012 facial procedure, the Tiguan now appears even more like its larger Touareg sibling. Its horizontal grille splits bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlights and U-shaped LED (light emitting diode) on top-end models, while the rear taillights received some more subtle tweaks. Physically, the Tiguan (the splicing of the words tiger and iguana) competes in the same class as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and Kia Sportage, to name just a few. Equally sharp looking is the interior that carries over for 2013 with the high-endstyle dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers will appreciate the six inches of fore/ aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can fold flat. The space is made even more generous due to the extra-low load floor. Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. Tiguan runs the spectrum with three trim
The Touareg (pronounced “Twah-regg”) resides in that rarified strata occupied by the Buick Enclave, Acura MDX and other premium tall wagons. It shares plenty with the pricier (and related) Porsche Cayenne, including the carryover 280-horsepower 3.6-litre V6. The optional 3.0-litre turbo-diesel now spools out 240 horsepower (previously 225). In case you’re wondering, VW will not bring the hybrid model (available in the United States) to Canada. Both powerplants provide the Touareg with a 3,500-kilogram towing capacity. An sixspeed automatic transmission is used to direct engine torque to all four wheels. The turbo-diesel is good for 11.2 l/100 km in the city and 6.8 on the highway, compared with 12.3/8.8 for the base 3.6. At this point your assumption that the Touareg is not a jacked-up car wearing oversized tires is correct as it has been specifically designed for off-road duty and is classified as a light truck. The permanent four-wheel-drive system works to pull you out of rough situations by sending power equally to the front and rear wheels. Torque can also be redirected if wheel slip is detected. The Touareg

levels – with the usual Trendline, Comfortline and Highline pals hanging around – and plenty of base equipment of the air/cruise/power variety. The top-end Highline wants for nothing and comes with leather seats, climate control, 18-inch wheels and a lot more for your on-the-road-price on the road price of $40,000.
Golf
Beetle
Volkswagen gets the credit for creating the first modernday hatchback in the mid-’70s, followed by the hot hatch variant a few years later. Whether it has been called the Golf or the Rabbit, as it has on a couple of occasions, VW has developed a fan base that has remained loyal to German and not Asia-based products. For 2013, Volkswagen is simply leaving the Golf and its offshoots as they are pending a new 2014 model. The regular Golf remains available in two- and fourdoor hatchback and four-door wagon variants with a base 170-horsepower 2.5litre five-cylinder engine. There’s also a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that’s quite torquey and good for 4.6 l/100 km on the highway and 6.7 in the city, which is about 35 per cent better than the base 2.5. As before, the sporty GTI is available in two- and four-door models and comes with a carryover 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder. Both two- and four-door models come with power windows, power locks, air conditioning, cruise control, power heated outside mirrors and an eight-speaker audio package. Volkswagen seems to be
Following a one-year absence, the new (not “New”) Beetle returned for the 2012 model year with crisper styling, a roomier and up-to-date interior and more power. The Beetle is wider and longer than the old New Beetle, which means more interior room for all. The contemporary cabin features easy-to-read dials and massive air vents that flank a carbonfibre-look dashboard. On up-level models a trio of gauges (oil temp, turbo boost pressure and clock/stopwatch) seem inspired by the Porsche 911 cockpit. Base models arrive with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder. Added for 2013 is a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (TDI). The TDI offers a very real alternative to most gas-electric hybrids when overall fuel economy and initial purchase cost are factored in. The top-rung and most performance-focused Beetle gets it done with a 200-horsepower 2.0litre turbocharged four-cylinder. It’s also the only model to include a standard rear spoiler. Entry-level Beetles showcase power-operated accessories plus air conditioning, cloth-covered seats and an eight-speaker stereo. Opting for the automatic transmission adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats and

Fusion
Escape
The next-generation Ford’s Fusion represents a merging of high-fashion style with game-altering fuel economy, with significant technological treats coming along for the ride. The sedan’s primary eye-catcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class MercedesBenz. Another design highlight is the open-mouth grille that greatly differs from the previous triple-bar fixture. The Fusion’s fashion statement extends to the cabin, with its fancier trim, comfier seats and a freshly pressed control panel. The distance between the front and rear wheels increases by five inches and the width and height by about an inch. Trunk room is the only reduction spot (likely due to a shorter deck), but only by about six per cent. The Fusion joins the Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, but eventually there will be no fewer than five distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder “EcoBoost” EcoBoost engines, worth 179
Ford’s latest Escape represents a clean-sheet designand-content approach to satisfy the needs of buyers. The sleeker look is radically different from the outgoing version’s boxiness, however its slightly larger dimensions have resulted in greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/ control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features wellbolstered front seats that are a major advancement over earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” fourcylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo fourcylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. The Escape is the
Type: Four-door midsize sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I6 (170) Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (179); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237); 2.0-litre I4 with AC electric motor (188, net) Layout: Front-engine, front/all-wheel drive Transmissions: six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (hybrid) l/100 km(city/highway): 9.2/5.8 (2.4, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,490
and 237-horsepower, respectively, are optional with the latter a requirement for all-wheel-drive all wheel drive Fusions.
Transit Connect
F-150
It’s hard to beat the Transit Connect’s ability to haul and carry boxes, racks, tools and parts to places where larger delivery trucks, and even fullsize pickups, can’t fit properly or cost too much to use. Nearly two metres of unobstructed floor space sits behind the front seats and the 1.6-metretall cargo hold can be accessed through dual sliding side doors or twin rear cargo doors. The same 136-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission carries over, and all Transit Connects come standard with traction and stability control to help prevent skids and spins. The fuel economy rings in at 9.9 l/100 km in the city and 7.4 on the highway, and there is now a prep kit for fleet owners wanting to switch to compressed natural gas or propane. The van can now be ordered in three versions: cargo, with or without side and/or rear windows; configured as a wagon (with side and rear glass included) with a second-row, two-person folding bench seat, or optional split-folding rear seat that can fit three passengers; or the “personal-use” p XLT Premium
Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 follows a simple pattern: update the features one year, revise the engines the next. Sprinkle in some new trims and technology occasionally. Rinse, repeat. For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharper-looking F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will bring even more customers through the door. All models get new trim-specific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner. Available only as a SuperCrew fourdoor cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by segment-first high-intensitydischarge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red and black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that’ll be more than enough since more than half of F-150’s sold come equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7litre or the optional EcoBoost. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard on the F F-150 150 SVT Raptor 4x4, which

The basic van model is pretty much a blank canvas, but air conditioning, AM/FM radio and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel are included. Upscale versions add colourkeyed bumpers, remote keyless entry, a CD player and power windows, locks and mirrors.

Fit
Accord
The movement toward lower consumption continues to gain momentum and we have excellent little gas-avoiders such as the Fit to help out. The wedgeshaped body still looks modern and athletic and the large front glass makes the car appear sleeker while providing excellent forward visibility. As one of the biggest cars in its class – in terms of interior volume – there’s an abundance of rear-passenger legroom and enough headroom for high-hatters. The interior features smart-looking gauges and control-panel layout, richfeeling seat fabrics and 10 beverage holders. The Fit’s flip-up rear seat bench creates a load floor ideal for toting plants and shrubs while the split-folding rear seatback folds flat for transporting cargo. A 117-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Base DX Fits feature a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, four-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. Moving up to the LX gets you air conditioning and more/better trim items,
The U.S.-built (30 years and counting) Accord maintains a conservative presence, while undergoing a metamorphosis in style, features and running gear. The sedan shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and loses about two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining 1.5 centimetres in width. Concurrently, trunk space increases by five per cent, thanks to a more compact rear suspension. The Accord appears more svelte, with less front overhang. The coupe has undergone a more subtle transformation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road. Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter. Drivers will be particularly enamored with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gauges and the 20-centimetre multi-information display screen. All passengers are treated to more comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centimetres of legroom for those in back. The base 2.4litre four-cylinder makes 185 horsepower (189 for the Sport model), up from 177.

Civic

Currently both coupes and sedans feature what Honda calls “one motion profile” sweeping rooflines plus thin roof pillars that help maximize visibility. Compared with the previous models, the sheetmetal on the sedan and slightly shorter coupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between the front and rear wheels a tad. Despite this, inside, Honda increased shoulder and legroom for front- and rear-seat passengers and modestly enlarged the trunk space. The two-tier instrument panel is slightly more formal and the centrally located tachometer is topped by a speedometer and available five-inch screen that displays key operating and audio selection info. Most Civics operate with a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The sporty Si coupe and Si sedan use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regular-strength Civics, while a six-speed manual gearbox is exclusive to the Si. On the cleaner, greener front, the Civic Hybrid sedan runs with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder that combines with an electric motor to propro
CR-V devotees might have difficulty spotting the current model that arrived for the 2012 model year since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in all key exterior dimensions. The overall shape was only moderately tinkered-with, including updated nose and tail sections plus a dramatically shaped rear roof pillar. The interior provides a slightly enlarged passenger area, but at the expense of slightly reduced cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard fold-down rear seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 poundfeet of torque. Fuel-economy is a Honda trademark, but the company claims that by activating the “ECON” button that alters the transmission and air conditioning functions, drivers can save a bit more. Ram 1500
Dart
Motor Trend’s 2013 Truck of the Year is the 2013 Dodge Ram 1500. This truck achieves bestin-class fuel economy, up to 7.9 L/100 km, thanks to innovations like a segment-first 8-speed automatic transmission and best-in-class aerodynamics. When you add a class-exclusive fourcorner air suspension and an all-new premium interior, it’s easy to see why Motor Trend chose the Dodge Ram to be their trophy truck. There are many key features that make the Ram 1500 a winner. A wide gear-ratio spread with close steps helps deliver excellent shift quality and allows the engine to spend more time at a lower rpm, resulting in better fuel economy. Electronic shift mapping adds to a great ride. The electronic transmission has 40 different shift maps to provide optimal shifting, each tuned to varying performance requirements and driving demands. The interior has also received as much attention as the outside. While the styling is familiar to those who have driven previous generation trucks, the technoltechnol
The creation of the new Dodge Dart has everything to do with both Chrysler/ Dodge and Alfa Romeo being a part of the Italybased Fiat automotive group. Although the Dart and Alfa’s Giulietta share the same basic platform, the Dart has its own distinctive sheetmetal, interior and powerplant selection. It is also built at a Chrysler assembly plant in Illinois. The Dart’s importance can’t be overstated enough, since Chrysler hasn’t had a compact sedan in play for about seven years. The Dart name will probably resonate with older customers, although many younger car buyers will likely miss the connection completely. Turning a Giulietta into a Dart involved increasing the platform length by 30 centimetres and the width by five cm. The result, claims Dodge, is a car with segment-leading scale, beating small-car luminaries. The cabin design is a standout, with futuristic-looking gauges, non-traditional control-panel displays and a unique storage area beneath the front passenger seat-cushion. Base Darts are pretty basic, but on par with others in the category. The options list incorporates air conditioning, heated

ogy inside is new. The variety of trim levels offered by Ram can give you everything from a basic work truck to a near-luxury vehicle with performance and off-road models falling somewhere in between. The Ram 1500 is often referred to as the most “recognizable pickup on the road.” Over time, it scaled down its bigrig look so be more stream-lined. stream lined.
Journey
500 Abarth
Journey scores a hole-in-one as a practical, efficient and affordable carrier. In base trim, there’s seating for five people, although there’s an available two-place third-row 50/50 split bench. There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flip-forward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables. And all models feature two in-floor storage compartments with removable plastic liners behind the front seats that are large enough to hold a dozen beverage cans each, plus ice. And don’t forget the chilled storage bin inside the glove compartment that can keep a couple of cool beverages at the ready. Although influenced by the Dodge Avenger sedan, this roomier derivation has about four more inches between the front and rear wheels and 20-centimetre height advantage, but with an overall length that’s just a touch greater. Also shared with the Avenger is a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder with four-speed automatic in base models. Optional is a 283-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 with a six-speed auto. Base Journey equipment includes air
With high gas prices, it’s no wonder that the demand for smaller (in some cases downright tiny) cars is growing. The recently arrived Fiat 500 is managing to cash in on that trend following a getting-toknow-you slow start. For 2013, the 500’s range of powerplants has expanded to include a new Turbo model. Although the top-of-the-line Abarth already comes with a 160-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-litre engine, the Turbo-branded 500’s output is rated at a more modest 135 horses. That doesn’t sound like much, but the number represents a one-third bump compared to the 101-horsepower 1.4. The Turbo’s visual cues include special front bodywork and body side trim, sport-tuned exhaust and exclusive 16-inch wheels. The Turbo joins the 500c Cabrio (convertible), which is actually just a folding fabric sunroof rather than a true drop-top. The bonus is that, unlike the Mini Cooper convertible, the 500c Cabrio doesn’t lose any trunk space, nor does its roof stack high around the rear seats to create blind spots. The 500 hatchback comes in Pop, Lounge and Sport trim levels, each featuring specific equipment levels,

Wheels 2013 special edition
Sorento
Optima
The Sorento remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2013 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a base 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 191-horsepower direct-fuel-injection version of the 2.4 and a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are closely matched in terms of fuel performance, although the direct-injection four-cylinder does hit 9.5 l/100 km on highway. Ultimately, your final choice will likely boil down to affordability and the amount of grunt you require. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission available, while all-wheel-drive is available with any engine. Standard LX features – four-cylinder and V6 in front-wheel-drive only – include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steering-wheel-located audio controls. The EX means you get allwheel-drive, bigger wheels, leather seats, dual zone climate control and pushbutton dual-zone
If you’ve been wondering who lit the fire under Kia’s rear bumper, the most likely person is designer Peter Schreyer who joined the company after a long stint with Audi. That’s right, Kia has a hotshot German designer and one of his best creations to date is the Optima. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of powerful four-cylinder engines: the entry-level is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower, while an optional 274-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine quenches your thirst for thrust. There’s also a hybridelectric version of the 2.4, but with only 169 horses (206 total with the electric motor). As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid system uses unique lithium-polymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 96 km/h without the gas engine assisting. Very well equipped for the class with

start. The EX V6 Luxury adds panoramic sunroof, navigation with rear-view camera and a power passenger seat. The top model is the SX, which is what it will take for you to get the third-row seat. The only other model where it can be added is the EX V6 Luxury as an extra-cost option.
Rio
Sportage
The Rio raises the bar for smallcar value, features and style. “Direct fuel injection” and “six-speed automatic transmission” are phrases not normally associated with entry-level transportation, but here they both are in a nearly perfectly styled small car. The pleasing sheetmetal is highlighted by the fact that the Rio sedan and Rio 5-Door hatchback have completely different front ends. Kia didn’t just put a hatchback on the tail of the Rio and call it a day. That kind of attention to detail extends to the dashboard layout that’s clearly presented and, due to a reduction of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than in past Rios. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch. The standard 1.6-litre fourcylinder produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, which is decent in a 1,150-kilogram vehicle. All Rio models come with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. To help save fuel dollars, automaticequipped cars can be ordered with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This feature shuts off the engine after the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is
It’s tough to fault the Sportage, which covers a fairly broad spectrum of price, features and performance. The base powerplant is a 176-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder that’s hooked to a six-speed manual transmission (available only in base front-wheel drive models). A six-speed automatic is optional and returns slightly better fuel economy than the manual. Optional is a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The Sportage is a front driver by nature, while the optional all-wheel-drive system directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels until tire slip is detected. At that point, the required power is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Mode” allows for a fixed 50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. You can get either engine in front- or all-wheeldrive models. The base LX Sportage includes Kia’s UVO in-car hands-free entertainment and communication system along with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short-range short range

released. ISG is part of an Eco Dynamics Package that includes a special alternator that disengages under high engine load (such as when heading up hill) for reduced power loss and improved fuel performance. Kia claims overall fuel consumption is reduced by about three per cent with ISG. That’s not much, but every little bit helps.

Trax
ATS
The Trax slots below the Equinox in Chevy’s tall wagon lineup and uses the same platform as that brand’s Cruze and Sonic small cars. In size it’s nearly 18 centimetres longer and 13 centimetres taller than a Sonic wagon, which provides plenty of space for up to five passengers and a relatively cavernous cargo area, especially with the rear seat folded flat. In addition, the front-passenger seat folds flat so that lengthy items are more likely to fit inside with the liftgate closed. Exact base and optional content has yet to be announced (the Trax is expected to arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2013), but at least three trim levels and a lengthy list of options are likely, with base models covering the basics plus air conditioning plus the usual power-operated windows, locks and outside mirrors. Standard for all trims is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 140 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. A six six-speed speed automatic is the sole
Compared to the larger CTS, the ATS is about 23 centimetres shorter, three centimetres narrower while being vertically challenged by about five centimetres. It also surrenders 10 centimetres between the front and rear wheels, which could make for a tighter cabin space than the CTS. Where the ATS really excels is its 1,500 kg curb weight. Part of the dieting process involved an aluminum hood, natural-fibre door panels and magnesium engine-mount brackets. Although the ATS is available with a relatively potent 321-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 (required when adding the optional all-wheel-drive), Cadillac is making available two additional four-cylinder offerings. Base cars get a 202-horsepower 2.5litre unit, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is optional. All powerplants are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, but in keeping with its performance nature (and to sway Euro-sedan fans) the turbo engine is available with a six-speed manual gearbox. Regardless of drivetrain, that the ATS’s sporty demeanor can be amplified with an optional suspension package that

transmission choice. Front-wheel-drive is also standard, while all-wheel-drive will be offered at extra cost.
Acadia
Cruze
GMC has given its big wagon a dose of attitude. The squared-off front end takes inspiration from the smaller Terrain and uses neat LED accent lighting in the new headlight clusters. New LED taillights, wraparound glass and a spoiler freshen up the rear end. The interior gets nicer plastics and leathers, highlighted by a new colour touch-screen with optional navigation. All Acadias come with either seven or eight seats and lots of room behind the third row for cargo. The second- and third-row seats can be folded flat for more storage, and, when upright, the second row slides fore and aft with one-hand operation. There’s also a raft of safety features such as side-curtain airbags that run the length of the cabin, an exclusive front centre airbag, blindspot and cross-traffic warning systems for 2013, anti-lock brakes, stability control to prevent a skid or spin, antirollover software and traction control. The carryover 288-horsepower 3.6litre V6 still drives the front wheels (all-wheel-drive is optional) through a revised six-speed automatic transmission with better shift quality. Also new are upgraded dual dual-flow flow suspension dampers
Chevrolet’s popular compact Cruze continues to stretch its value even further with new standard equipment and some attractive option packages. The biggest changes include a MyLink radio (that streams music via Bluetooth), voice recognition and compatibility with Pandora Internet radio. A new 18-centimetre colour touch stereo with navigation and USB port can be had on virtually every model, while new driver convenience packages include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rearvision camera and more. The rest of the interior remains a highly attractive seating area that wouldn’t look out of place in a more expensive sedan. The base car is equipped with a 1.8litre four-cylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ models and you’ll get and a smaller – less is more here – 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque than the base engine. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the auto auto-

to better handle bumps and thumps. GMC’s luxo Denali sub-brand continues with the revised Acadia, too. The exterior gets unique badges, grille, body pieces, high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, 20-inch wheels and dual exhaust, while the cabin gets special heated-and-cooled leather seats, higherquality trimmings, and a rear-seat DVD player with two screens.

Sonata
Elantra
Hyundai dropped the gauntlet with the 2011 Sonata, which was a new sedan in no way similar to its predecessor. The base engine remains a 198-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’s other critical ingredient is the use of a 270-volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km/h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The vehicle’s 5.4 l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is near top of the class. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while both the turbocharged engine and the Hybrid employ only six-speed automatics. Base GL Sonatas include the usual poweroperated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and keyless push push-button button start.
Hyundai has been readying itself to better take on competitors by expanding the successful Elantra line to include a two-door coupe and four-door hatchback. The newcomers share the swoops-and-swirls theme that’s visible along the Elantra sedan’s flanks while mimicking the more aggressive front-end style of the Veloster Turbo. Blacked-out grilles and unique wheel designs are another area of differentiation, but from the back, the Coupe is awfully similar to the sedan and identical in both interior and exterior dimensions. The GT is slightly shorter, but its expanded cargo area allows for 23 cubicfeet (650 litres) of room with the rear seats up (compared with 15 – 425 litres – for the sedan/Coupe) and more than 50 (1,400 litres) with them folded flat. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine puts out 148 horsepower (145 horsepower for states that require partial-zero-emissions tuning), and is at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic). All three Elantras use the same ultra ultra-modern modern dashboard and

The Hybrid arrives loaded right from the get-go, but checking the Premium Package box adds a panoramic sunroof (standard on the Limited and 2.0T), touch-screen navigation, leather seat covers, backup camera, 17-inch wheels (16s are standard) and a premium sound system.
Tucson
Veloster
Customers are used to Hyundai not only offering great value, but for the last few years, also offering head-turning packaging. The five-passenger Tucson is no different: tight proportions, very little overhang beyond the front wheels and slashing longitudinal lines certainly make it look substantial and anything but “entry level.” Inside, everything fits just right, from the seat bolsters to the shifter and radio controls that immediately fall to hand. For the Tucson’s small size, there’s no shortage of interior room. The rear passenger doors open wide to swallow people or larger boxes. The Tucson features a four-cylinder strategy with a 2.0-litre engine rated at a very respectable 165 horsepower and an optional 176-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Although the 2.0 is available with a five-speed manual transmission (or the six-speed automatic) and is only available on front-wheel-drive models, the 2.4 steps in if all-wheeldrive is desired. The AWD comes with a number of off-roader-type functions, including hill-start-assist and downhillbrake control for added stability on steep terrain. The 2013 Tucson runs the gamut,
Is the three-door Veloster the definition of divisive? Sure. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it proposition, but more will love it this season as the dramatic-looking Turbo has finally arrived. The frontwheel-drive hatchback plays in a different sandbox than Hyundai’s other refreshed performance car – the Genesis Coupe – where affordability and fuel economy are as important as eye-catching styling. Specifying the dual-clutch transmission adds a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fuel economy. For those seeking more adrenaline, the new Veloster Turbo uses the same four-cylinder engine but adds a turbocharger and intercooler to bring the magic number of 201 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but Turbos use a regular sixspeed automatic, optionally. Visually, the Turbo gets a more aggressive front end with a larger blacked out grille, a different hood, lower ground effects, a revised rear bumper and a gigantic twin exhaust poking out back. Most of the interior bits are shared between the two, meaning ea g seating seat g for o four ou passe passengers ge s

FR-S
iQ
For Toyota’s Scion branch, the FR-S represents the flagship model that the brand has needed since its 2004 inception. Ultimately Scion, with its more prolific dealer network, should move its fair share of FR-S (the caps stand for Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive Sport) metal. And what impressive metal it is. The coupe’s longhood-short-deck proportions are right on the money and the low hood, muscular fenders and curvy roofline give it a poised, gimmick-free appearance. The interior also carries the Toyota stamp of approval, with big round control dials flanked by even bigger round air vents. The tachometer (also big and round) sits dead centre in the driver’s line of vision, with a smaller speedometer to the left and fuel/temperature gauges to the right. Shift-indicator lights on the tach can be set at 100-rpm increments starting from 2,000 rpm up to the engine’s 7,400rpm redline. The driver can also engage a warning chime that goes off when the engine’s max rev limit is about to be reached. The FR-S employs a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre “flat” four-cylinder Boxer engine (one bank of two pistons fires at
The tiny Toyota is barely three metres and has space for four people. However, the person sitting directly behind the driver will have to be sufficiently flexible of to sit cross-legged for extended periods. That’s because this so-called “micro subcompact” offers a unique seating arrangement, with the driver’s chair positioned a few inches aft of the front passenger seat. This allows for reasonable legroom available behind the shotgun position, but barely any behind the driver. For all practical purposes, the iQ is a threeperson proposition. With three people aboard, storage space is accessible through the hatch opening. With the back seat folded, stashing a couple of sets of golf clubs or full-size suitcases would not be out of the question. The two-tone dashboard has been shaped for minimal cabin intrusion (an under-seat bin replaces the glove compartment), while the gauges, controls and pop-up-style audio/navigation system reflect the iQ’s minimalist character. There’s nothing minimal about the 11 airbags strategically located about the cabin, however, including the first first-ever ever

180 degrees to the opposite two pistons). The powertrain sits well back of the front wheels to optimize distribution of the car’s svelte 1,255-kilogram front:rear heft at 53:47. Every FR-S is shipped from its Japan homeland with the expected load of standard gear plus aluminum sport pedals, a 300-watt Pioneer sound system and Michelin Primacy rubber fitted to a neat set of 17-inch 17 inch wheels.
xB
tC
The xB received redesigned headlights and taillights and bumpers. At the time, Scion also updated the xB’s front seats with bigger bolsters and new fabric, added a new covered storage bin between the front seats and installed a new adjustable steering wheel and gauges. What remains unchanged is a plethora of standard content for buyers wishing to spend a limited amount of their wealth on a new car. A 2.4-litre four-cylinder produces a healthy 158 ponies, delivered to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic with manual-shift controls. All xBs arrive with air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows/locks/ mirrors and a decent audio package. Scion dealers are so keen to have their customers return to their locales that the first two oil changes are on the house. Perhaps that’s because they want to tempt younger buyers with an array of cool add-ons, including a navigation system with seven-inch touch screen, alloy wheels, dual DVD headrest monitors, interior lighting systems, overover
The tC has to make room in the Scion garage for the upstart FR-S that its Toyota parent co-produced with Subaru. However, the tC remains appealing for other reasons, not the least of which is an easy-onthe-wallet price tag. The styling is derived from a recent run of Scion concept vehicles, but still leaves buyers with plenty of freedom to make dealer-supplied (and warranted) modifications such as different wheels, spoilers and even a wide-body kit. Under the hood there’s a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 180 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. Six-speed transmissions, either manual or optional automatics, handle the shifting duties. Scion’s philosophy of offering wellequipped cars in one trim level that can then be customized by their owners still rings true, so the standard-equipment list includes air conditioning, cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes, a power dual-pane moonroof, high-output Pioneer-brand sound system and power windows, locks and mirrors.

rear-window airbag plus driver and front-passenger knee and seat-cushion airbags. Keeping the iQ on the go is a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 94 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. Considering the car’s modest 950-kilogram curb weight, it’s likely all that’s needed for most urban driving scenarios. The 1.3 is mated to a continuously variable transmission.
Type: Two-door hatchback coupe Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (180) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) l/100 km(city/highway): 9.2/6.4 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; anti-lock brakes Weight (kg): 1,380
The tC also comes with the requisite six airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag. With the rear seat (which actually reclines up to 45 degrees) and the front passenger seat folded flat, the hatchback-accessible stowage area can swallow objects up to 2.4-metres in length. It’s those little extras that make the range of Toyota’s junior-division cars so popular.

Lancer
RVR
Right now the hot model in Mitusbishi’s lineup is the RVR. Coming in second is the Lancer, especially the SE trim level with All Wheel Control (AWC). Its primary aim is to give those living in snowy climes a sure-footed chance when dealing with nasty winter conditions, or whenever or wherever extra traction is required. The SE AWC, which slots in between the DE and the GT trims, features a 168-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that it shares with the GT. That’s a step up from the 148-horsepower 2.0-litre fourcylinder that moves the price-leader DE and regular front-drive SE. The SE AWC is only available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the DE just gets the manual gearbox and the SE and GT can be had with either. Lancer can also be had as a Sportback (hatchback) but only fitted with the 2.0 engine with either a five-speed manual transmission or optional CVT. Atop the Lancer pyramid, the Ralliart and Evolution duke it out with their WRX and WRX STI competitors on the street and the world’s rally racing circuits. Both feature allwheel drive and turbocharged 2.0 wheel-drive 2.0-litre litre
The RVR is similar to the Outlander wagon in style, but shorter by more than 35 centimetres. From stem to stern, the design is cohesive and clean cut. It also works well with the Lancer Evolution-style open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet-fighter air intakes, which as you might recall was a ’50s theme. Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted to the base ES front-wheel-drive models, while a continuously variable (CVT) unit is standard in both the two- and allwheel-drive SE versions, along with the new-for-2013 GT. Paddle shifters that control the six artificial steps (designed to emulate the more familiar operation of a conventional automatic transmission) are part of the CVT package. The RVR’s optional all-wheel-drive is controlled through a knob on the floor console. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, but when tire slip is detected, up to 70 per cent of the engine engine’ss torque can be direct direct-

Outlander
iMiev
The Outlander specializes in offering family-type transportation with room in back for stowing your youngsters, a large dog or two, plus related gear. For maximum passenger accommodations there’s an available third-row seat that folds flat for added cargo space. Front- and all-wheel-drive ES models employ the 168-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder rated at 9.0 l/100 km in the city and 7.0 highway. Although it’s bigger than your typical sedan, the Outlander drives much like a car, especially since its underpinnings have been borrowed from the Lancer. And top-end XLS might drive more like a Lancer Ralliart since the Outlander borrows the performance-oriented Super-All Wheel Control all-wheel drive system from its sporty cousin. Air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry, six-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors are standard on each and every model. Available only on XLS models is a navigation system. LS and XLS models receive the handy third-row fold-down seat at no extra cost. Other features unique to XLS customers include climate control, bright xenon headlights, heated
The iMiev gets credit for not looking anything like a regular gasoline-engine car. This bubblebodied hatchback looks the way you would think and electric car should look, in a visually appealing sort of way. The iMiev is one of the smallest electrical offerings available for general consumption. As a short-haul urban commuter pod, it accommodates four adults as long as they’re packing light. But with only the front seats in use, cargo capacity with the 50:50 rear seat folded flat matches the space available in the larger Nissan Leaf. The iMiev’s top speed is set at 130 km/h, but driving at that velocity for any length of time will quickly sap its 330volt lithium-ion battery pack positioned beneath the passenger floor. The system flows power to the 49-kilowatt (66-horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque) electric motor. The iMiev’s range at about 135 kilometres per charge, close to the 160 kilometres claimed by the Leaf and other electrics. Piloting the iMiev involves shifting the single-speed controller to one of three operating modes: “D” for optimum performance; “Eco” for maximum battery life; or “B” to maximize the amount of regenerative

breaking that replenishes the batteries more quickly and stretches the i’s effective range. A 240-volt home charging system requires about six hours to top up the i, or 22.5-hours if you tap into a 120volt outlet found in virtually every home. However future public electriccar charging stations will be able to replenish the i-Miev to 80 per cent of full capacity in about 30 minutes.
