Council consider sand beach question on census to be unrealistic by Treena Mielke Black Press

A Sylvan Lake town councilor’s vision of recreating a sandy beach is not completely dead in the water, but other councilors agree the issue should not be floated by public opinion. Coun. Sean McIntyre’s request to include the question on the 2013 municipal census asking taxpayers if they are in support of the creation of a sand beach on the lake side of the sea wall within the provincial park was shot down by council at its Feb. 11 meeting. While council all said they would like to see a sand beach become a reality, they did not believe asking the question as part of the

census was prudent. “There isn’t a person in this community who doesn’t want a sandy beach,” said Mayor Susan Samson. “I think, however, it would be physically impossible (to make this happen). The mayor noted the cost of restoring the beach would be prohibitive and far more than the $25,000 budgeted for a sand pit to be built adjacent to the water. “It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to do this and I don’t think we’re in a position to throw that (question) out there, when we can’t deliver. The solution is lower lake levels, not bringing in more sand.” Coun. Ken MacVicar agreed. “A better approach is to meet with environment. If we can’t deliver, we will set

ourselves up for some trouble. With the lake levels the way they are, dredging the lake isn’t gong to do anything. Three times we have met with environment and every time we have been told, ‘we don’t do this anywhere in the province anymore.” Despite opposition, McIntyre did not back down from his position. “My plan hasn’t changed since I was elected. The beach and how it related to our town is important to me and to our citizens.” In her report to council Marilee Littmann, executive assistant for the town, said Grant Santo, local Alberta Parks official indicated he would not support the creation of a sand beach on the lake side of the sea wall. Conventional methods of transporting

sand would not be permitted in the lake due to environmental concerns. Littmann said Alberta Parks believe that the beach would be very temporary and that when the sand washed out it could create a steeper drop off at the swimming area boundary. In her report, Littmann stated that Santo also indicated that it was his opinion, based on past conversations, that the department of Oceans and Fisheries would also oppose any application for this purpose. After a lengthy discussion on the matter, council agreed to direct administration to look into the cost, the feasibility and the steps needed for permission to re-create such a sand beach. Police on lookout for men trying to break into vehicles February 2nd 8:28 a.m. A witness called RCMP to report two males trying to break into vehicles at an oilfield shop near the Kuusamo Industrial area. The two males fled in a stolen pickup truck before members

arrived on scene but the vehicle was later seen traveling at a high rate of speed by Red Deer County officers past Township Road 380 at Range Road 30. RCMP members were unable to locate the

vehicle, however, a good description of two male suspects was obtained and the inves-

tigation is ongoing. 11:22 a.m. A homeowner was issued a $500 fine under the Sylvan Lake noise bylaw after a complaint of loud music and partying coming from a residence on Lark Close.

The homeowner was issued the fine due to continuous complaints regarding noise coming from the residence and multiple visits made by police to that location. February 3rd 1:13 a.m. A RCMP member on patrol conducted a traffic stop on 50th Avenue at 50th Street in Sylvan Lake after spotting a suspicious vehicle with the licence plate not visible. The female driver was found to be driving an uninsured and unregistered vehicle and she was not able to produce her driver’s license. She is now charged with three Traffic Safety Act offences and was also arrested for possession of crack cocaine which was found in the vehicle. The female was remanded in custody as she was also found to be on probation at the time of the offences. 2:45 a.m. A male is facing a charge of failing to comply with conditions of his undertaking after he

was seen by RCMP coming out of a bar on Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake. The male was intoxicated and was on conditions not to consume alcohol. The male also had outstanding warrants for similar offences. He was lodged in cells until sober and was released to later appear in court. February 4th 9:47 a.m. Several complaints of vehicle vandalism were reported to police along Old Boomer Road and Westview Drive in Sylvan Lake. Vehicle rear windows were smashed out as they were parked in front of residences along the street. One owner noticed a small hole through the rear driver’s side window but the cause is unclear. Nothing appeared to be stolen from the vehicles. An investigation is ongoing. February 5th 11:34 p.m. A female is facing charges of

impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. RCMP were called to Highway 20 at Highway 11 after a male called in a possible intoxicated female driver who hit the ditch at Highway 20. The female claimed to have slid off the highway and as the complainant was helping her out of the ditch he detected alcohol on her breath. When police arrived, she was given a breathalyzer and was officially charged with impaired driving. February 7th 5:48 p.m. Police were called to the Sylvan Lake Walmart after three males were caught trying to steal items from the store. Two youths and an adult male are charged with breaching conditions of their undertakings to have no contact. The adult male is also facing a charge of possession of cocaine.

Town to apply for program for cost savings on fuel by Treena Mielke Black Press

A 24-hour speedskating marathon, to be held Sunday on Sylvan Lake as a fundraiser for The Children’s Wish Foundation, will be the first ever to be held in Canada, says organizer Art Goelema. “Such an event has never been held in Canada,” he said. The marathon is to begin at 2 p.m. Feb. 17 and will involve three groups each comprised of five skaters. The five skaters will skate on a two-kilometre track for an hour, then take two hours off, and then skate again. The track will be lit up through the use of generators throughout the night. Goelema said he has wanted to

organize such an event for some time and is excited to see it finally come to fruition. “It is good to be able to give back. If we have to skate and suffer a little bit during the night but we are putting a smile on a child’s face, then it is all worth it. I’ll skate any day for that.” The marathon will be a fun and worthwhile event, he said. “I’m totally pumped. I’m sure we will have terrific ice and the weather Gods will be with us.” However, he said, if the weather is not favorable, it will make no difference. “If it is, it is. We’re going to start it and we’re going to finish it.” Donations to The Children’s Wish Foundation may be made on line or at the event.

Bibles for grads committee looking for names by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

The Bibles for Grads committee is, once again, compiling a list of Grade 12 students so they can ensure they receive a personally engraved Bible. Committee member Diane Powell said anyone who knows of a Grade 12 student living in the area, but attending a school other than H. J. Cody, is asked to contact Sharon Nielsen at 887-3419. “We need names as soon as possible so we can get their Bibles engraved,” she said. The committee, including people from all denominations, has already started planning for the event. Powell said the committee strives to ensure that all Grade 12 students receive a Bible. The Bibles for Grads ceremony and turkey dinner will be April 11 at Sylvan Lake’s community centre from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event includes a

full course meal, entertainment and presentation of the Bibles. Money for the event is raised through the Sylvan Lake Ministerial Association, which includes Benalto Baptist Church, as well as through individual donations. An offering during the Massed Choir Cantata at Christmas time also supports the event.

Municipalities who are part of the fuel supply program are given two days advance warning of changes in fuel pricing. “We would propose, with assistance from Finance, to monitor pricing activity and trending over the next year to determine the value of tracking the on-going expenditures,” said Gassor in his report. “If other opportunities for more economical purchasing arise, we will bring further information to council.” Although the town will use the program, the fuel supplier will continue to be the UFA card-lock station.

As of the tenders’

closing date of Feb. 4, a completed tender from PFA and an incompleted tender from Imperial Oil (Esso) were received. In his report Gassor noted a net approximate annual saving of $1,169 could be realized through the fuel supply program. However, he noted this amount would vary depending on timing, types and volumes of purchases throughout the year. The tendering process followed a request by Coun. Rick Grimson in September to look into the cost of fuel and petroleum at local outlets. C oun. Ken MacVicar, who voted in favor of the program,

said he did have some concerns. “In some ways I’m a little concerned,” he said. “We should be setting an example of shopping locally.” However, Gassor said the town would still use UFA card lock, but would not be billed directly. Council agreed to tender the fuel procurement to local suppliers annually. In 2012, the cost of fuels was listed at approximately $170,000 in the public works annual operating budget.

Reflections of Sylvan Lake, then and now When I was knee high to a grasshopper and lived out west with my dad and my brothers I thought the world pretty much ended on the north shore of Sylvan Lake and began on Lakeshore Drive. In the place in my mind where reflections of the past flourish and where I can zoom in events, people and places to become larger than life, I remember. I remember cresting the hill on Highway 11 which was, in those days, a gravel road, and suddenly in front of the cracked windshield of that old ‘49 Plymouth, Sylvan Lake appeared. I was only a kid, born and raised West of the Fifth, but I just knew when I saw that lake it was going to be a good day. And it always was. And as I go back in time once again and carefully turn my own kaleidoscope of memories, I see it all again. The old wooden pier, water so blue it hurts my eyes, lapping gently at its sides. Me prancing along quickly,the the scorching sunbleached boards hot on the soles of my bare feet. Me, totally, blissfully one with the sun and the day and all in life that is good

and wonderful, licking a soft ice cream cone, creamy cool and delicious. And even though I’m green as grass and haven’t lived through very many summers, I’m pretty sure I have found what the lake and the beach and the town, itself, has to offer. Happiness! The huge expanse of sandy beach must have been there then and probably even later, when my kids were kids. And, in fact, perhaps, my footprints and those of my children would all be there, if footprints in the sand were like memories, and didn’t disappear in the relentless passage of time. But the sandy beach is gone now, as is the old wooden pier, Varsity Hall, the boat house, the roller skating rink and the old hotel. It’s good to remember, to reflect and to just be there again, if only for a little while. But, reality tells us ‘back in the day’ is over and it’s time to move on. And that is not such a bad thing. Last summer, I was fortunate enough to watch my grandchildren wrestle and run and tumble about on the huge expanse of green at the

newly created park. And I stood in shivering amazement as my oldest grandson leapt into frigid waters off the cement wall. “Watch, grandma,” he commanded. And I did! And when he hit the water with a splash, we both shivered. The Sylvan Lake of today

is a ‘memory keeper’ kind of place where you can sit on those chairs in the park and watch the kaleidoscope of color that is made up when all the colors of the sky and the sun and the water get all mixed up. Or you can walk along the lake and watch the bur-

nished gold of the setting sun turn the lake, itself, into a million shards of dancing lights. The Sylvan Lake of today is no different than the Sylvan Lake back in the day. It’s a memory keeper kind of place, always was, always will be.

The income gap, public interest and the economy In its Global Risks 2013 report, The World Economic Forum (WEF) identified income disparity as one of the world’s greatest risks. Statistics Canada reports that the income gap between the top 1 per cent of Canadians and everyone else continues to widen to alarming levels. The WEF warns that the widening gap can lead to negative consequences for all of us. We should be concerned about this problem both locally and abroad. The new Statistics Canada data and WEF report comes on the heels of the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, both of which started with protests about economic disparity. The consequences of poverty and lack of opportunity have also been raised by Canadian first nations communities in the Idle No More protests. These protests all have one thing in common: they offer little on how to go forward. However, they do highlight the fact that something must be done about the negative consequences of growing

income disparity. It’s time to start conversations about how to approach the problem from a different ethic. Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz points out that “93 per cent of results of economic growth in the U.S. since 2010 has gone to the top 1 per cent of society. The median income of the worker in the country is lower by one-third when compared to levels prevailing in 1968.” There is little compelling evidence to suggest these figures are substantially different in other developed nations, such as Canada. Stiglitz writes in his book, The Price of Inequality, that we have built a society that views those with large incomes as more deserving in an “achievement” model of income determination. However, income determination is not as simple as creating the conditions for hard work. There are far more forces at play, and “. . . inequality is, to a large extent, the result of government policies that shape and direct the forces of technology and markets and broader societal forces.”

Stiglitz argues that inequality is avoidable and that relying on the “achievement” myth to fix everything is far too simplistic. “An economic and political system that does not deliver for most citizens is one that is not sustainable in the long run. Eventually, faith in democracy and the market economy will erode, and the legitimacy of existing institutions and arrangements will be called into question.” The protests of disenfranchised groups and international reports underscore the same point: accepting it as inevitable that many people should work in jobs that do not sustain a household or family while a small elite solidifies its gains is short sighted. Greater income inequality breaks apart societies by polarizing its citizens into groups that increasingly distrust one another. We have ample evidence that leaving large groups of people in pov-

erty escalates costs in health, criminal justice, and other public systems. It is far cheaper for all of us to ensure that economic disparity is not widened by our public policies The answer to income disparity is not simply to suggest that people work harder and longer without assessing the range of policy opportunities available to us. As Alan Greenspan told the U.S. Congress in 2009, overreliance on a particular ideology clouds our judgement when evaluating economic policy effects. We must initiate discussions about the economy itself as a public interest rather than just an aggregation of private interests. Stiglitz points out that emphasizing growth and economic health includes a concerted effort to ensure that those most disenfranchised among us also gain from societal involvement. We should heed the warnings of the World Economic Forum and learn from the ideological mistakes of the past. Capitalism and free markets have led to unprecedented

standards of living for very large numbers of people, but we must take tremendous care that the economy continues to truly serve all people well. If we believe in a just society, then this ought to be reflected in how we govern ourselves. The economy should not only equalize opportunity but also provide a minimally equitable benefit. It should not simply maximize opportunism for a few. Meaningful public discussions regarding “how the economy is a public interest” may help to change our notions of what is just, what is equitable, and how to get there. If we want to mitigate the risks the WEF, Stiglitz, and others have identified, then perhaps it is time to think differently about the nature and role of the economy. Reader speaks out against protesters Dear Editor, Congratulations to Mr. Johnston on his Feb. 7 letter, concerning the ‘Idle no more’ protesters. He is only saying what thousands of normal tax paying citizens of this country have

been thinking for years, but with all these “correctness” issues we have these days it seems the only ones that are allowed to say anything about a problem are the ones causing the problem. It is bad enough that

our various levels of government manage to waste our tax dollars by the bucketful, but with the Indians it is just a bottomless pit. Perhaps if they were to learn some accountability and how to make proper use of the

billions we already give them, they would not have the problems they have. When are we allowed to say “enough is enough?”

Canada are idle; don’t work and therefore should receive no working benefit like free health care that some First Nations receive. In the least, the letter implied, the Treaty deals between people certainly should be broken. Both of us work and volunteer lots. As peo-

ple who have worked in public education, we often hear that we don’t deserve benefits, either. So sometimes, we don’t think it’s really how hard that we work, or what we pay for our benefits, it’s probably something else. Many of us, like ourselves, hold “individual” private property

Census Questions At its regular meeting, Feb. 11 council agreed the supplementary question to be asked along with the 2013 municipal census is to be be “have you required after hours (5 p.m. to 8 a.m.) health services in the last 12 months?” Mayor Susan Samson said she believed such a question may help the town in its quest to obtain an urgent care facility. Planning continues for centennial celebrations By Treena Mielke Black Press

As 2013 unfolds, so does the planning and organizing of celebra-

tions for Sylvan Lake’s centennial year-long party.

To help keep the public updated regarding centennial celebrations and to provide an opportunity to sign up as a volunteer for the exciting events, an information meeting regarding the centennial was held at the library, Feb. 2. Brenda Dale chairman of the task force said she was pleased with the turnout. “It was good. We had the meeting as we want people to know there are lots of opportunities out there for a variety of things to volunteer for and we want them to be aware of all the fun things we have coming up.” She said the task force has planned several activities for June, beginning the week before 1913 Days. The first of these is a civic ceremony to be held June 8 in the multiplex

which is to depict 10 decades of Sylvan Lake’s history through theater and music, much of which will be provided by the H. J. Cody school band. “We wanted to do our Sylvan Lake version of a civic ceremony and show off our talent,” she said.”We have so much talent out there, we really need to showcase it.” The Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society will provide pictures and the town’s history story for the musical production. The fun will continue with a street barbecue to follow the ceremony. On June 12, Centennial Park is to be re-dedicated. “In 1967 when it was first dedicated as Centennial Park there was only 13 people,” said Dale. “We can do way better than that” The event is to be a huge outdoor picnic with an open invitation to everyone. Dressing up in the appropriate attire for the decade of one’s choice is encouraged. The events continue June 14 when a ‘meet and greet’ will be held in the multiplex. The evening promises to be a fun filled activity with former

Miss Mermaids and members of the Chamber of Commerce on hand to greet everyone. And, to add authenticity to the evening, backdrops will be set up, each depicting one of the 10 decades in the centennial. These backdrops will offer a perfect setting for a photo shoot. On June 15 the public is invited to put on their dancing shoes and dance the night away in fine style. The band, Jazz Explosion will be the first to entertain, followed by The Falcons. Dale didn’t divulge any of the names of the band members, but she said some people who attended dances at Varsity Hall may recognize them. The final band to play is The Boom Chucka Boys, whose rock ‘n roll tunes from days gone by is sure to rock the room. Centennial celebrations are to continue into the summer with a dazzling display from the famous Snowbirds tentatively scheduled for July 17. The town’s youth will do their part to help make the centennial celebration one to remember. Kathy Inglis is head-

ing a commemorative art project which will involve Grade 7 students in Sylvan Lake. The project will tell Sylvan Lake’s story through poetry, artwork and photos. A history walk which involves setting up community display boards throughout town which show the history of local organizations is ongoing. Judy Scanland, who heads the group said about 35 boards are being rotated throughout town. “We now there is more history out there and we would like to get it up to 50,” she said. “Anyone who has a board out there, get it back to me so you can be part of the action.” For more information check the Facebook page at Sylvan Lake 100th Birthday Celebration. The Chamber of Commerce wants to light the way to Sylvan Lake with an electronic billboard placed in a clearly visible location and the organization is willing to spend around $200,000 to make it happen. Director Joel Johannson said the proposed LED billboard will be similar to one in use to promote the Town of Innisfail. The chamber is considering placing the sign at the corner of Hwy. 11 and 20 or on Hwy. 11 between Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. The electronic sign will be an excellent way to promote the town, its businesses and also advertise local events, said Johannson. “It is a four by seven meter sign with screens on both sides. The idea

of it is to promote the town and what we have to offer. We want to promote businesses.” Johannson said purchasing such a sign has been in the works for about a year and the proposal is now being reviewed by the town’s planning department.” Chamber past president Carlos Simonot said the project is in its infancy stage, although it has been on the back burner for the chamber for some time. “It will provide paid advertising for our members and serve as a community bulletin board,” he said. A spokesperson from that department confirmed the signage request is under review. A decision has yet to be made if the matter will be referred to the municipal planning commission or dealt with internally.

Fox run boys win gold, girls silver in basketball by Kim Matthews Special to Sylvan Lake News

Last weekend the Fox Run middle School senior boys and girls basketball teams hosted a two-day tournament in Sylvan Lake. There were teams from all over central Alberta. In the girls tournament there was Fox Run, David Thompson (Grade 9 girls), Eastview (R.D.) Delburn, Sundre, Central(R.D.). In the boys tournament there was Fox Run, Sundre, Eastview (R.D.) Central (R.D.), Spruceview and Olds. The Fox Run senior girls’ team played a total of five games losing twice to the same team. The second loss was in the gold medal game against the team from David Thompson. They really held their own against this extremely talented team of high school players. Our girls

fought really hard and it paid off taking home silver medals for their efforts. Their coach Aimee Sandham wanted to congratulate her team and commend them on a well fought tournament that had them beating their rival team from Central (Red Deer). This was a great learning experience for our girls and a lot of fun was had by all. The senior boys’ team had an outstanding tournament going undefeated throughout the two days and brought home gold medals. Coach Justin Bander said the boys got off to a bit of a slow start but certainly gained momentum every game leading to the gold medal game, in which they finished 5 5 2 5 over Eastview (Red Deer). Fundraiser for cancer coming to Cities Gastro Pub by Treena Mielke Black pres

Julie Grant was only nineyears-old when she lost her father to brain cancer and, to this day, the memories she has of him remain as special and sacred as ever. “I remember his smile,” she said, “even as a child I remember him smiling.” Grant, who is due to deliver her first child March 14, brushes away the tears as she acknowledges the fact her father will not get to see this beloved grandchild. The pain of losing a loved one to cancer has intensified Grant’s desire to do her part to help in the fight against the dreaded disease. Last year she joined forces with Coreen Spencer, also of Sylvan Lake, to take part in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Spencer, who had participated in the ride the year before, also had personal reasons to join in the fight against cancer. Spencer’s best friend died of cancer in 2012.

On June 22 and 23 the ladies, along with eight other riders, will form a team which will participate in the grueling ride through the foothills of Alberta. The 230K two-day bike ride begins in Calgary and continues west into the rocky, hilly and sometimes treacherous terrain of the foothills. Grant said she is looking forward to this year’s ride, despite the fact last year’s challenge was extremely difficult with adverse weather conditions. “We had horrible weather. It poured both days. At one point the road was even washed out. It was rough.” Grant said 1,800 riders participated in the event and the riders who were cancer survivors were identified with yellow flags on their bikes. “It was very moving; very fulfilling and inspirational,” she said. “You couldn’t ever think about quitting when you saw that.” This year, Grant and Spencer along with their friend and fellow organizer Nova Barrow have

joined forces with Dwayne Gauthier, owner and chef of Cities Gastro Pub in Sylvan Lake to raise funds and create awareness about the Enbridge Ride. The fundraising event, The Ride of Your Life, is to be held Feb. 24 at the Cities Gastro Pub.The event is to include a four course meal, entertainment by folk and contemporary musicians, Erin Glover and Kyle Hansen, door prizes, a silent auction and a photo booth. All proceeds are to go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The master of ceremonies for the evening is Greg Shannon of KG Country Mornings. Tourist bags soon to be available by Treena Mielke Black Press

Visitors who attend a sporting or cultural event in Sylvan Lake in the future may find themselves to be the recipient of a special bag filled with gifts compliments of the chamber of commerce. Executive director Catherine Bais said 5,000 bags have been ordered and the chamber is hoping an order will arrive in time to fill about 200 for the speedskaters who will be arriving in town this week. The bags are to contain souvenirs and memorablalia of Sylvan Lake including the popular Discover Sylvan magazine and the Chamber sponsored maps.

Bais said she believes the bags to be a good promotional tool as well as a welcoming gift. She said similar gift bags are available in other communities. “It seems whenever we go to a conference we are given (similar) bags,” she said. Businesses are encouraged to drop off items they wish to have in the bags at the chamber office so they can be distributed. The plastic gift bags will contain the town and chamber’s logos. T-shirts with Sylvan Lake’s centennial logo are also available at the chamber office. “These T shirts are unique. They are the only ones printed with the centennial logo,” said Bais.

Shirley enjoyed her games of bridge with the ladies group as well as at the senior center. Also, she loved gardening, flowers and all animals. She enjoyed all the wonderful family gatherings over the years and loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart. Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Jack, her children; Bob (Marney), Wanda (Terry), Jeff (Debra) Jackie (Don) and Kevin (Laurie), thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her brothers; Dick Todd (Marlene) and Leonard Todd, and her sisters; Cindy Logan (Ed) and Dorothy Todd. Shirley was predeceased by her father, Leonard Todd, her mother, Elenore Montgomery, brother, Bob and son, Doug (Patty). Wrestling club wins medals at Ace Championship Submitted Sylvan Lake News

The members of Team Eville, Nathan â€œHoney badgerâ€? Posti, Brooklyn â€œBullyâ€? Thomson, Brett â€œBam Bamâ€? Burak, Hunter Smith, Malcolm Tisdale and Sophia â€œEwokâ€? McAlpine competed at the Submission Ace Championships last Saturday in Red Deer. When Sophia stepped off the mats last November with her third place trophy, the first thing she said was she would win the gold medal in her next tournament. Sophia got off to a slow start on Saturday, winning her first match 5-1. After that it was 8-0, 10-0, 7-0. Sophia was so dominate that day that she was able to score points during her opponentâ€™s turns. Every time she stepped off the mats her smile was a little bit bigger, but when they put that gold

medal around her neck we all thought she would explode. As the â€œEwokâ€™sâ€? matches were winding down, Nathanâ€™s were just getting started. The â€œHoney badgerâ€? got off to a shaky start by getting caught in a choke in his first match. Noticeably upset with that defeat Nathan refocused and won the remainder of his matches; very decisively. His matches were so entertaining, the crowd was constantly cheering. Even though he had to settle for second, the way he energized the crowd he was easily one of the most exciting competitors that day. Brooklyn â€œBullyâ€? Thomson is definitely hitting her stride. Her opponents (all of which are boys) canâ€™t take her down and Brooklyn hasnâ€™t been submitted in her last five matches. The â€œBullyâ€? made short work of her first and last opponents and wrestled

to a draw with the eventual tournament winner. With no other competitors in his age bracket, Hunter stepped up to the 13 to 17 year old division. His first match was against a 15-yearold giant, 170lbs. and six feet tall. Hunter wrestled for all he was worth, but couldnâ€™t over come the huge size difference. Next up Hunter locked horns with fellow teammate â€œBam Bamâ€? Burak. It was a great back and forth match, a real crowd pleaser. Unfortunately Brettâ€™s experience level was yet another obstacle that Hunter was unable to overcome. But like a future champion, he stepped on the mat for his third and final match seemingly unaffected by his earlier defeats. Hunter stayed focused, he dominated his opponent that match and went on to win the bronze medal. Brett â€œBam Bamâ€? Burak also squared off

against the 15-year-old giant. â€œBam Bamâ€? was able to get the match to the ground quickly and started to work for a dominant position. Brett attempted several submissions, but with minutes left in the match he found himself caught in a bent arm lock. Brett went on to win his next two matches and secured a silver medal finish. One gold, three silvers and a bronze medal, not a bad day for a warm-up tournament. To date Team Eville has competed in over 50 matches spread out in 13 tournaments, logged hundreds of hours of practice time and supported one another the entire way. There have been countless great moments; tons of awesome wrestling and of course a lot of shiny trophies. But for me this tournament tops them all. Watching â€œBam Bamâ€? Burak, â€œEwokâ€? McAlpine, â€œBullyâ€? Thomson, Hunter

Smith, â€œHoney badgerâ€? Posti and Malcolm Tisdale helping each other reach their individual goals for that day was amazing. My favorite moment has to be Brooklynâ€™s first match. She spent the entire time defending against a rear choke, her arms were

exhausted and neck was sore. The match had zap most of her strength and mentally she was drained. I looked over to see Sophia giving her a hug and draping her gold medal around her neck. Within seconds Brooklynâ€™s energy was restored and she went

on to dominate in the rest of her matches. Those small moments are what make all the hardships associated with this sport worth it. Team Eville will be in Sylvan Lake to defend their first place finishes Feb. 23.
