FHA’s water edict blasted Chilliwack angry over prospect of chlorinated water Jennifer Feinberg The Progress
Chilliwack is expressing outrage about the prospect of having chlorination imposed on its drinking water. “From what I can see, most residents have overwhelmingly rejected the idea,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. Numerous posts opposing chlorination of Chilliwack’s water have popped up this week on Facebook, Twitter and on the The Progress website. “Our council shares the concerns being expressed by the people of Chilliwack,” said Gaetz, adding that council has already made this known to health officials. Calls and emails have been flooding in to city hall and to Fraser Health since the medical health officer dropped the bombshell on Chilliwack Tuesday that its awardwinning drinking water would soon require a disinfectant be added, namely chlorine. The main reason was the three incidents of E.coli infection detected over the past five years in the water system, along with a growing population base, meaning more people and animals in the area. But all three E.coli incidents were isolated, the mayor said, occurring in hillside reservoir tanks. City staff took immediate action activating the emergency chlorination system. Medal winners an inspiration: O’Mahony Stephanie Kostrzewa fought back tears as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal – awarded posthumously to her grandmother, Dorothy – was pinned to her lapel Thursday. The ceremony was another in a series of events, marking the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Presented by Chilliwack-Hope MLA Gwen O’Mahony, the medals were awarded to four recipients from the riding, all chosen by a selection committee. In addition to Kostrzewa – the much loved long-time city councillor who recently past away – awards went to Ted Westlin of Agassiz, Chief Willie Charlie of Sts’ailes, and Anne Schudeleit of Boston Bar.
O’Mahony also presented the first-ever “Chilliwack-Hope Citizenship Award.” That award, which will now be presented annually, went to long-time Hope physician Dr. Ernie Murakami. Said O’Mahony: “I am consistently inspired by the caliber of people we have here in Chilliwack— Hope.” Kostrzewa was celebrated for her “long service to Chilliwack in municipal government, her persistent volunteerism in the community, and to recognize her historic accomplishment of being the first Chinese-Canadian woman ever elected to political office in Canada.” Ted Westlin was recognized for his “promotion of local agriculture, dedication to his community, and
long service in municipal government.” The former teacher remains active in the community, having served six terms on council with the District of Kent Municipality. Westlin is an active director and member of the Agassiz Agricultural Horticultural Association, and active member of local drainage committees. Chief Willie Charlie was acknowledged for his leadership, vision, and his “unwavering commitment to justice for his people, his activism for aboriginal rights and title, and his services to his community as Chief of the Sts’ailes (Chehalis) First Nation.” Said Eddie Gardiner as he introduced Chief Charlie: “What gives
him his strength as a strong and brilliant leader is the teachings he got from his elders.” Those teachings are now being passed on to the next generation, said Gardiner. Schudeleit, meanwhile, was recognized for her volunteer work. But one achievement stood out above others at Thursday’s ceremony. Schudeleit successfully brought cable television to the Fraser Canyon. Diamond Jubilee Medals have gone to about 700 people in British Columbia. O’Mahony noted that only once before had diamond jubilee awards been presented and that was during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Attack ads draw spending complaint from MLA Les Alina Konevski The Progress
Chilliwack MLA John Les twice cried foul last week over another MLA’s advertising spending, an action Les insists has nothing to do with election season. The BC Liberal representative has filed two requests with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to investigate ads and a press release coming out of NDP MLA Harry Lali’s office. Lali represents the nearby
Fraser-Nicola provincial riding. Les says the negative and partisan ads appear to have been paid for with Lali’s taxpayer funded constituency allowance, prohibited in the members’ handbook. “When you think about it, it’s pretty clear,” says Les. “You don’t use taxpayer dollars to run partisan political campaigns. That’s just not appropriate.” Printed in the Lillooet News, Merritt Herald, and Ashcroft-Cache Creek Journal, the ads included such phrases as “Oh, no! Not
another Liberal boondoggle!!” and “Christy Clark’s so-called ‘jobs plan’ will kill BC jobs.” All feature Lali’s profile picture, list his Merritt office address as the contact, and link to the BC NDP website. Prior to these ads, Les also caught Lali on a press release from last week, which attacked Christy Clark and the Liberal leadership, while flattering the NDP. Lali apologized for both incidents, telling the media on Monday that he “takes full responsibil-
ity,” and that the “honest mistake” won’t happen again. But Les doesn’t buy it, because Lali has served in the Legislature for 17 years. “(Lali) blames it on the fact that he has new staff, but I think that’s just a fellow not taking full responsibility,” says Les. The ads will now be paid for by the NDP, or by Lali himself, but not by the taxpayer. Now that the complaints have been registered, it is up to the Speaker to determine whether or

The most interesting thing about this is that it’s one of the simplest problems of all to solve. “Just put your phone away,” says Mike Weightman, Lower Mainland road safety coordinator for ICBC. If you can’t help yourself, stash it in the trunk. “Concentrate on driving from A to B first, then make that call or text.” He’s even got some advice for parents. “So the kids have phones and they’re out driving. Sometimes their parents will text them, but that can be adding to the problem. We tell folks that if your kids are en route somewhere, don’t even try to contact them.” Despite the simplicity of it, the

message is hard to get across. They’re seeing the texting and driving habit entrenched among drivers of all ages and genders. “People need to step up to the plate and do the right thing,” says Weightman. “What is alarming is that distracted driving and cell phone use become a more common cause of traffic fatalities than impaired driving.” And it’s a phenomenon across the Western world, not just B.C. It works out to an average of 94 deaths per year, making distracted driving the third-leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities in B.C., behind speeding and impaired driving. So it’s perfect timing. Since legislation was passed, banning the use of handheld devices in 2010, police have written a whopping 105,972 tickets. “In the month of February police across B.C. will be targeting drivers who operate vehicles while using a handheld device,” says Cpl. Large grow-op uncovered on Chilliwack Mountain
Jennifer Feinberg When it comes to safe driving, the advent of the smart phone has changed everything. Just ask Art of Driving School owner Lori Barillaro. She’s out driving the Chilliwack streets all day, schooling people in a range of safe driving techniques. Texting while driving is still a dangerous and perennial problem. “I see people coming towards me, crossing the centre line by a foot or so,” Barillaro says. “As I get closer I see it’s because they’re on the phone.” Enter the bright red anti-texting band, Buckle UR Phone, devised by a U.S. teenager and her brother on the eastern seaboard who were concerned about traffic fatalities caused by texting drivers. Barillaro brought the no-texting bands to Chilliwack. The Art of Driving is proud to be the first driving school in Canada to make it part of the driver education program, she said. The red band is meant to be placed on a thumb as a visual cue, or on a key chain. Her students sign a pledge not to text and drive, are given one of the red bands, and a No-texting sticker to put on the dash. “Not only do kids and new drivers need to be educated about it, they need a reminder.” Not all kids want to wear the red no-texting band on their thumbs. “But if they won’t wear it we say to at least put it on a key chain, that way they can still see the red ring and be reminded.” It’s important, because distracted driving is a leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. One quarter of all fatal crashes in B.C. from 2007 to 2011 were related to distracted driv-

A large house on a secluded portion of Chilliwack Mountain was home to a 1,450 plant marijuana grow operation, Chilliwack RCMP say. The 5,600-square-foot home – located in the 8400 block of Grand View Drive – was used almost exclusively for pot production. “There were very few signs of obvious residential usage,” said Cst. Bryan Martell of the Chilliwack drug section. “It appears that the house was being used solely as a grow op.” Police discovered the grow-op Feb. 1 while searching for evidence of electrical theft. Power was being rerouted around the BC Hydro meter, RCMP said. Inside the home the located a “large scale” grow operation. Police seized 1,450 marijuana plants from the residence and a 38 year old Chilliwack man was arrested at the home and released to appear in court at a later date. “The Chilliwack RCMP Drug Section continues to focus on illegal marijuana grow operations as they pose a significant public safety risk to our community,” said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. “There is often an organized crime connection to grow ops and in keeping with our strategic priorities, we will continue to target these.” The Chilliwack RCMP also continue to work diligently with our partners including BC Hydro in order to find and prosecute offences involving stolen electricity.

Tim Bain told The Progress that police response time is not an issue for Yarrow. “It’s not an issue because the police are on the road all the time, and respond to calls as need be,” he said. Police calls get triaged like at a hospital. The higher priority ones get the quickest response, so in the case of an emergent situation in Yarrow, it would be “the number one” on the triage list, he said. “We’re very cognitive of the issues with breakins in our schools,” said Insp. Bain. “We’re taking proactive measures to address them.” The officer sits on both the public safety and rural issues committees, and unfortunately these challenges are not only unique to Yarrow. A disabled 57-yearold woman discovered Friday morning that her electric scooter was stolen from a locked basement at Main St. and Spadina Ave. Inger Degrow suffers from severe osteoporosis, has a herniated disc, and needs hip surgery. Mayor seeks ‘science-based’ evidence

February is heart month and you would have to search hard to find anyone with more heart than a member of lions international. As a member of the Mount Cheam Lions, I am proud of the work we do right here in the Chilliwack area. We work hard to help those in need in whatever way we are able. Mount Cheam Lions are also proud to work with other service clubs (including other Lions Clubs) for the betterment of all concerned. One of the projects that stands out is the Chilliwack Music Festival put on each year by the Chilliwack Lions. The 66th Chilliwack Lions Club Music and Dance Festival, begins with dance competitions from Feb. 5th – 25th, then music competitions from Feb. 25th – Mar. 13th. Bands are scheduled to compete at G.W. Graham secondary school from Mar. 12th – 14th. The city has 20 people working full-time to look after the city’s drinking water, which comes from the underground Sardis aquifer. “We have invested heavily in our drinking water system,” she said. “We take care of it. We replace aging pipes and clean them every year. We take every precaution to ensure we don’t have incidents of contamination.” The city takes 50 water samples every week, exceeding the required 22 samples. “That’s our choice to exceed the testing requirements,” Gaetz said. She said she has only seen a few comments that appear to support the idea of chlorination if the water is proven to be unsafe. But the mayor is not convinced. “They have to demonstrate to our community that this decision for chlorination is science-based,” said Gaetz. Today’s society is so concerned
with various aspects of the environment in general. “They’re concerned about what we spray on crops and grass. They’re concerned about GMOs. They’re concerned about what we breathe. We’re worried about all these, so it stands to reason there would be concern about introducing a chemical into our water.” Those awards for the best drinking water in Canada, and fifth best in the world, weren’t by accident, she said. “We hope health officials will work with us and seek alternatives like how to better protect our reservoirs. We’d be happy to engage those discussions. I think we need to take small steps here.” Once they chlorinate, there’s no going back. “I hope we can figure out a better way. We only have one chance to fight this.” Isn’t it already a done deal? “I’m always surprised by what strong public reaction can do,” she said. “As someone who has served on council for 16 years, I can think of many times we have changed our minds after hearing from the community.”
A notice on the city website at chilliwack.com is directing concerned citizens to call Fraser Health, which has the legislative power to order chlorination under the provincial Drinking Water Protection Act. The outrage seems to be stemming from people’s frustration at not having a say in the matter, she said. “That’s what happens when a decision is made for Chilliwack before we even get to chat about it,” said Gaetz. “That’s how some feel about Metro Vancouver and the prospect of incineration. They have been saying, ‘No more.’ You can’t impact something so integral to people’s daily lives like water and not expect a reaction.” The drinking water department is at 604-870-7919, but anyone calling Fraser Health about chlorination in Chilliwack is being asked to leave a message. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is on to something when he suggests that the federal government needs to look at whether it should revoke citizenship from convicted terrorists who have dual Canadian citizenship. He was speaking about the case of a young man from Lebanon who is a suspect in a violent bus bombing in Bulgaria last year that killed five Israeli tourists. The attack was believed to have been carried out by Hezbollah. The man was travelling on a Canadian passport and is a dual CanadianLebanese citizen. He has not lived in Canada since he was 12. Kenney suggested that terrorists do not deserve to have Canadian citizenship if they are also citizens of another country and, presumably, don’t even live here. His basic notion is correct. Terrorists do not abide by the rules of law in any country, even those that may shelter them, and are basically at war with anyone or anything they find offensive. However, as some people said in response to Kenney’s comments, terrorism is also very loosely defined. Calling someone a terrorist or an act terrorism can be done far too easily. In the case of dual citizens where there is a conviction of terrorism, or treason, or something else that strikes at Canada’s own nature, there is no good reason why they should be allowed to keep a Canadian passport. There does need to be a proper appeal process so that passports are not removed arbitrarily. Canadian citizenship is not a right, but is a privilege granted to some of those who have come from elsewhere and agree to abide by our laws and way of life. Dual citizenship in itself does present some challenges. In 2006, the government flew back thousands of citizens from Lebanon, when violence between Hezbollah and Israel broke out. Many of these were dual citizens who had not lived in Canada for years. That is a separate problem, and one that is worthy of study. But revoking citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorist acts is something that can and should move ahead more quickly. With a proper avenue for appeal, there is no reason it shouldn’t go ahead. ~ Black Press

Independent MLAs in B.C. have a dream
VICTORIA – Imagine a province where party leaders are chosen in an independently supervised vote, with 12-year-olds, dead people and pets prevented from voting. Imagine a province where roving gangs of influence-seekers aren’t allowed to join multiple parties, and the rule is actually enforced. One where corporations and unions have to advertise in their own name instead of financing political parties and then disclosing millions in donations months after the election is over. Imagine a province where elections are held based on audited financial statements, not a collection of election promises that will be dismissed as a work of fiction by the new regime if the incumbent party is defeated. A cat joined the B.C. Liberal Party to support Christy Clark. Adrian Dix won the NDP leader-

ship with the help of bags of $10 bills stapled to new memberships. As parties go to online voting, multiple PIN numbers may be activated from the same phone number or the same address. These and other glaring problems with our party-based political system were Tom highlighted last FLETCHER week in a set of reforms proposed by three independent MLAs. Vicki Huntington broke the party choke-hold on B.C. politics by getting elected as an independent in Delta South in 2009. Bob Simpson was kicked out of the NDP caucus shortly after winning re-election for the party in Cariboo North, because he dared to criticize then-leader
Carole James for a lack of policy specifics. They were belatedly joined by Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen, who quit the B.C. Liberals in an orchestrated move to the B.C. Conservatives, and then quit that party soon after. Van Dongen does not have the credibility of the others to speak on integrity, given his self-serving party antics and his questionable decision to hire his fiancée and pay her one and a half salaries to serve as his constituency assistant. Leaving that aside, there are some good ideas in the independents’ reform package. One is to give backbench MLAs a meaningful role in policy-making. Simpson gave the example of Prince George MLA Shirley Bond’s term as education minister, where she had to reverse ministry policies that didn’t make
sense in rural school districts. The all-party standing committee on education could have prevented this error, he said, but it didn’t because it never meets. The party voting irregularities described above could be addressed by giving Elections BC authority to supervise party leadership votes, the way it does elections and referenda. There are unknown costs for this, and other problems. For instance, should the Marijuana Party be subject to this, or the Work Less Party, should either one muster enough organization to stage a leadership contest? The independents had high hopes for one fundamental reform, moving B.C.’s set election date from the spring to the fall. This would take a simple amendment. The idea is for the government to table the annual budget, present the audited public accounts for

the previous year, then have an election that rests on tested financial statements and initial results for the current forecast. Both the B.C. Liberal Party and the NDP have expressed support for this idea. The independents suggest that this brief three-week legislative session is a good time to do it, so the next government can implement it. I asked Mike de Jong, the B.C. Liberal finance minister and house leader, if he would consider it. He allowed that it is interesting, but it’s not contemplated for the pre-election session. That will be dominated by returning the provincial sales tax, and the usual jousting over untested spending and revenue proposals.

It is also the case of E.coli getting into vegetables. Our water supply (excerpt from City of Chilliwack website): “Your drinking water is obtained from the Sardis-Vedder Aquifer, a natural underground water reservoir. Although the Sardis-Vedder Aquifer currently yields water of excellent quality, it is a highly sensitive source which is vulnerable to contamination. If an aquifer becomes
polluted, it is difficult, sometimes even impossible, to restore water quality back to its original level. Therefore, it is important to adopt groundwater protection measures in our everyday activities.” This means that at this level we have a natural underground water reservoir almost an impossibility to get E.coli in. However it does say we have a sensitive source to contamination. It also means that due to where our agricultural areas are in Chilliwack they cannot be the source the FHA is concerned about. So if their concerns are due to the now very populated Vedder Crossing /Promontory
areas and the human waste content then that should be where we focus on upgrading to make sure there is not a future issue. Maybe before we are enforced to chlorinate our water the city should have a chance to be educated on how they can save our water and not have changes forced upon us.. and again I state? Is it not better to put the money into preventing the cause of E.coli instead of putting the money into preventing an outbreak. Let’s just work together to keep the crap out of the water?. More marked crosswalks needed
In response to your pedestrian safety commentary in Thursday’s Progress, I am writing to say I have expressed concern regarding “unmarked crosswalks“ to both the RCMP, and city hall. This is a REAL problem, so perhaps this is a good time for some education on the issue. It seems that the majority of motorists are of the opinion that the only time they must yield to pedestrians is
in clearly marked crosswalks. I experience this on a daily basis on my walks throughout the neighbourhood, specifically at the intersection of Silverthorne and South Sumas, which does not have a marked crosswalk. Incidentally there are three schools within walking distance so on school days, there is a lot of foot traffic on this route. When attempting to cross South Sumas
at this intersection, I routinely am ignored by drivers speeding past me, even though I have left the curb and am waiting to cross. So, for all you drivers who travel South Sumas, please have some consideration for pedestrians, and for the rules of the road. Thank you for letting me express my views on this matter. Linda Sutton

Water chlorination not wanted The Fraser Health would like to start adding chlorine to our water supply to prevent an E.coli break out. This in itself is troubling to me. E.coli is a bacteria that is not normally found naturally in water, plants or dirt. It is found in the intestines of warm blooded animals and humans. If there is a possibility of contamination to Chilliwack’s water supply then should we not be looking at the cause not the quick fix. How is human or animal fecal matter able to contaminate our water supply. I would rather know the $1.5 million needed for the upkeep the water treatment to be used to keep the crap away from our

of C. difficile infections in area hospitals, attributed to enhanced cleaning and hand-washing strategies. Alarmingly high rates of the bacteria-spread illness had prompted the health region to send roving “super clean” teams through six hospitals in early 2012. The congestion-control exercise didn’t reach all of its targets. It succeeded in increasing the percentage of admitted ER patients getting a hospital bed within 10 hours to 58 per cent – up from 51 per cent last year but not yet consistently at a target of at least 61 per cent. All hospitals are now beating a target of having more than 90 per cent of hip surgeries performed within 48 hours of the patient being admitted. “We cannot take our foot off the gas,” the report says, cautioning that “there will continue to be pressure on access to services and from time to time there will likely be congestionrelated events.” Fraser Health previously estimated the region will be short 1,100 beds by 2020 but that study is being updated to recalculate expected demand for acute care beds. The 2,200 acute care beds across 12 hospitals are routinely full. But the 2014 opening of the new $512-million expansion at Surrey Memorial will add 150 more beds. The report shows the average length of stay of a patient is down from 8.4 to 8.1 days but not yet at a target of 7.9. Some of the gains were made through methods like having home care staff at emergency departments intercept incoming elderly patients and redirect them back home, provided it’s appropriate and sufficient home support can be dispatched.

Darrell Nelson: Giving back locally, globally Chilliwack is a great place to call home. It’s close enough to the big city and yet its natural, rural surroundings allow you to feel as if life here is just a little less complicated. This is where Darrell Nelson grew up and lived for most of his life and later, as a local businessman, he gave back to his community. “In 1995, a partner and I brought on-line service to the Fraser Valley. We started NT Online and a couple of years later, we sold it to Dowco. I continued to work in the industry, as a professional web developer, until a couple of years ago,” he said. Darrel’s sense of giving back started early in his childhood. His parents were his first teachers. His father worked for the highway department in Weyburn, Sask. In the late 60s, the family moved to Chilliwack. “Dad worked part-time for highways here but then went to work for School District 33,” he said. In 1975, his parents made the decision to attend Bible School in the U.S. and in 1976 they returned and became pastors in Abbotsford. By 1982, the year that Darrell married his wife Shannon, his parents left for the Philippines to work as missionaries. Fast forward to 2005 and Darrell, his father and son travelled to this tropical country of fascinating landscapes and Darrell fell in love with the people. A year later, he took his wife over and two
years after that the couple sold their condo in Chilliwack, put their possessions in storage and moved over there. “The Filipino people are wonderful. They are so resilient no matter how poor they may be. They can be walking through a flood holding a pig over their head and they are still perfectly happy and are not asking why the government isn’t helping them. It’s a different mentality altogether and if people went to a third world country, Ana it would change MACEDO the way they see things,” he said passionately. Back in Chilliwack for a family visit, Darrell misses his home in the Philippines and is concerned for the people in the wake of the typhoon that battered the country in early December, claiming lives and displacing millions of people but he will soon return to help however he can. “We had our trip already booked before the typhoon hit but fortunately we have terrific staff over there and they are continuing their great work,” he said. The typhoon devastated whole villages swamped with sudden floods, triggering deadly landslides and wiping out crops. Aid in the form of food,
water and emergency shelter is required in the worst-hit areas. Darrell’s organization, BSF Philippines, will be integral in specifically dealing with the water issue. Millions of Filipinos have little choice but to drink water that is contaminated and inevitably, it makes them sick. BSF Philippines is a not-for-profit organization that is committed and dedicated to bringing safe drinking water to rural communities throughout the country. “The goal is to bring clean water to every Filipino household. Each biosand water filter, which is what is used to clean the water, costs only $100 CDN. It is used in 72 countries and is recognized by the World Health Organization. Brown water that goes through this system comes out clean and any foul smell is removed from the water as well. For now, we’ll need to deal with getting enough clean water to the communities at large as a result of the typhoon but once the crisis subsides, we can continue our efforts to specifically deal with individual households,” he explained. The biosand filter (BSF) is a simple technology that was developed in the 1990s at the University of Calgary by Dr. David Manz. The filter is an adaptation of the traditional slow-sand filter which has been used in community drinking water treatment for 200 years.

The concrete device is filled with layers of specially selected and prepared sand and gravel and the end result is that it removes up to 97 per cent of the bacteria and 100 per cent of the parasites found in contaminated water. BSF Philippines employs seven Filipino staff and they go out into the mountains to speak to the villagers about how they can help themselves by having the filters installed in their homes. “There isn’t a hand-out mentality. We allow people to solve their own problems. They need to be part of the process,” he said. Living in a modest townhouse in Davao City, the third largest city in the Philippines, Darrell, Shannon and their staff work diligently and effectively in seeking support for the vital work that they do. “My time is spent speaking to government; corporations, foundations, Rotary and other organizations to garner their support. We are also forging relations with other organizations.” One of the projects that Darrell will be working on shortly is to update his organization’s website www.bsfphilippines.com so that whenever a donation is made, donors can log-on to see how the filter that they have purchased has benefitted the community at large. “It’s important to see how your donation is making a difference,” he ended.
Mt. Slesse Middle School is sponsoring an evening for parents in the Chilliwack School District. Chick Moorman, noted author and speaker, will address how to speak with children in language that builds self-esteem and encourages responsibility. Parents will learn the 10 best and worst things to say to children. They will hear suggestions for speaking in ways that reduce family conflict, demonstrate listening and build trust and caring. Chick Moorman will explore how parents talk to their children and the underlying “silent messages” that accompany their actual words. Chick Moorman holds bachelors and master’s degrees from Western Michigan University in the field of Education. He is a former classroom teacher who went on to found the Institute for Personal Power, providing training for over 300,000 teachers and parents. He has worked with parents and teachers for over 40 years. Chick Moorman, author, father, and grandfather, thought he had done it all. At different times in his life, he experienced full-time parenting, weekend parenting, and step-parenting. He even single-parented his teenage son for several years. After 20 years of traveling around the country teaching other people how to parent, without warning he became another statistic in the evergrowing number of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Seven-year-old Natalie Brunt is the youngest member of the Chilliwack Chicks, a group of local women who have so far raised over $50,000 for the Run for the Cure in aid of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. For the last two years Natalie has been growing her hair in order to donate it to a Canadian cancer charity. It is now just at the required length and she is planning to have it cut on March 7 at a Ladies Night fundraiser which has been arranged by the Chilliwack Chicks at the Best Western Rainbow Country Inn, Chilliwack. Fed up with girls putting themselves down over their image, one local teenager is spearheading an innovative campaign aimed at emphasizing what true beauty is. Brittany Clough, a 17-yearold Grade 12 student at G.W. Graham Secondary School, is calling on all high school girls in Chilliwack to remove their makeup and hair products for one week, Feb. 16–23. All proceeds of pledges go to the Dove Foundation, which campaigns to clean up Hollywood movies. About 80 girls have already requested pledge forms, from at least five different schools. Brittany was motivated to run an event emphasizing inner beauty because she has noticed girls struggling with low selfesteem. “There’s Grade 7s coming to
school wearing loads of making, because that’s what they believe beauty is. There’s a lot of eating disorders, self-harm, from people who don’ t believe that they’re good enough, and it’s just sad to watch that increase,” says Brittany. The challenge week includes daily self-esteem exercises, such as listing 30 positive things about oneself. And to demonstrate that everyone goes through self-doubt – whether it be the smart girl, or the beautiful one – Brittany is wrapping the week with a celebrity-packed speaker night and sleepover party on Friday, Feb. 22, at G.W. school. Chilliwack’s mayor Sharon Gaetz, professional singer Marika Siewert, and Miss World Canada 2012 Tara Teng will step up to the podium, all inspired to take part by Brittany’s initiative. “I imagine that these young women, if they’re used to wear-
ing makeup and hair product – if they have hair like mine, which is extremely curly without the hair straightener – will feel a little bit vulnerable, because I think we do. I think (Brittany) is teaching everyone what true value is,” says Gaetz, who will share lessons from her sisters and her favourite women role models at the event. “The whole part of being self-assured has to come from within.” Siewert, on her part, tries to dispel myths about beauty in the entertainment industry through her work. “Everyone’s always focusing on the anti-bullying side, but if people actually focused on the value of girls and guys alike, you would get rid of the bullying issue because when these kids know how they’re valued, and what their identity is, you get less of the other conflict that causes the bullying,” says Siewert. singer is also donating half of the proceeds from the sale of her album at the speaker event to the Dove Foundation. A yoga instructor, Christie Weightman from Off the Mat Yoga, will also lead a class for the girls, and speak about the practice’s health benefits on the mind and body. And local teachers and students will share their thoughts on how to make it through teenage-hood with head held high. Afterward, Brittany will guide the participating girls through a series of fun activities, such as making a video about what beauty means to them. Brittany, backed up by her similarly hardworking mom Jenny Clough, organized all this herself. In addition to the beauty campaign, the energetic go-getter is on various school clubs, including dance, drama, vocal jazz, and musical theatre. She’s an assistant instructor at the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts, and volunteers for community fundraisers. Come September, Brittany is hoping to enter UBC for a B.A. in psychology and writing, or maybe go to Toronto’s Sheridan College for musical theatre. “I love it,” she says of her busy life. “I get it from my mom.” Last Sunday, she competed in the Miss Teen Canada World provincials. Beauty pageants are a new activity for her, and she threw herself into the ring because of the inner beauty that she

believes the pageant promotes. “I don’t call it a beauty pageant, I just call it Miss Teen Canada World. Because it’s not Miss Beautiful, it’s just Miss Teen Canada: someone who will represent the girls in Canada well, a leader,” says Brittany. Persian Warrior working toward UFC dream Eric J. Welsh, The Progress
“There is no better feeling than beating a guy,” Sabah Fadai said with a grin. “Have you bungee jumped? I have, and the adrenaline rush is better than anything you get with that. It is the best feeling in the world, but it’s nothing I can explain.” Fadai has experienced this feeling often over the past six years, climbing the ladder of competitive mixed martial arts. It is the feeling that brings him to a black-painted windowless training facility in Abbotsford day after day after day. At Mamba Mixed Martial Arts, the man who calls himself the Persian Warrior is putting everything he’s got into a dream. The 27-year-old Chilliwack native wants to compete in UFC, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. And so he works. Lifting weights. Riding the bike. Sparring. Always with one eye on the prize. “That’s all I want is to fight at the highest level there is,” he said. When Fadai got into MMA shortly after graduating from Sardis secondary school, it wasn’t because he was dreaming of fame and fortune. UFC was barely a blip on the national consciousness then, regarded by most as a brutally violent novelty act with a short shelf life. “A lot of guys get into MMA now because of the fame and fortune and groupies, but it wasn’t like that at all back then,” Fadai said. “Money and women and all that other stuff, it didn’t even cross my mind. I got into it for the right reason, because I loved it. I punched a guy in the face once and I was like, ‘Wow! This is amazing! I can do this legally?’” Fadai was taking bachelor of science classes at Thompson Rivers University at the time, hitting the gym in his spare hours. He liked jiu-jitsu and muay thai and found he had a talent for them. He won a bronze medal at his first tournament, which motivated him even more. Putting school aside, Fadai left Kamloops, moved back home and started demolishing local opponents. “I had my first pro fight and I smashed the guy, and

then I had another fight and beat that guy too,” Fadai smiled. “My coaches were telling me I was a talented fighter, and that motivated me a lot. So I trained harder, and harder and found myself beating some top-level guys with ease.” All well and good, but Fadai still didn’t see himself being able to earn a living with MMA. So off he went to the Philippines to study dentistry. “The theory wasn’t all that great, but the clinic? They’ve got some horrible teeth out there,” he said, explaining southeast Asia as his dentist school destination. “Just some crazy, crazy cases that you’d never ever find here.” As he was doing this, Fadai was well aware of the irony of the MMA fighter/ dentist. “The plan was to do fighting and have a clinic somewhere,” he said. “Then I could knock guys’ teeth out and they’d require my professional services.” Eventually though, it was going to come down to one or the other.
MMA won. “If I continued with dentistry I would have had to put away fighting for good,” Fadai said. “By the time I finished and passed the board exam, I would have been 31 years old. Trying to come back as a fighter at that age would be impossible. So I decided to stick with what I love.” Dentists do quite well financially. They tend to have nice cars and nice houses and nice long vacations in tropical locales. When Fadai got back to Canada, he spent a year sleeping on the floor at Mamba. “I knew fighting was satisfying and rewarding for me, and even if I didn’t have a lot of money I’d be happy,” Fadai said. “And if I didn’t stay with fighting I would have always thought, ‘I could have been. I could have been the champion. I could have been one of the greatest fighters of all time. I didn’t want to have those thoughts.” That’s not to say there wasn’t plenty of second guessing when the bills
piled up and the accommodations were less than he’d hoped. “I didn’t have a bed, or a TV and all I really had was four or five blankets and a pillow,” he said, pointing to the spot in the Mamba gym where he slept. “So absolutely I second guessed. When I left my parents’ house, I left a king-sized bed and a meal on the table every night. But I wanted to do it on my own, and once you commit to something you stay strong and keep going.” A night-job working security at the Echo Room in Chilliwack helps pay the bills now, and leaves daytime hours free. It still wouldn’t qualify as an easy life, but Fadai comes across as legitimately happy and at peace with his choice. Even on days when it doesn’t go well. As good as he is, Fadai still loses from time to time, still ‘gets tooled’ in a sparring session. “I have cried in the past, just gone into the changeroom, put my head in my hands and just cried,” he said. “At those times I feel like I suck. What am I
doing?” But that just serves as motivation. The next time he’s in the octagon, his opponent pays the price. “MMA is about who trains harder. Who has the most discipline and who is the most skilled,” he said. “I see it all the time with guys who have talent but not work ethic. They’re out partying. They have one fight and don’t show up for another six months. I fight and win or lose, depending on injury, I’m back in the gym a week later. If you really want it, you’ve got to be here.” What Fadai needs most at the moment is to get noticed. And despite all his wins, that has been difficult to do. “I work my (rhymes with bass) off to get my name out there on Facebook and Twitter, but it’s still not enough,” he said. “There are fighters out there who don’t have the experience I have, but they’re more noticed because of the connections they have.” Fadai keeps the faith, believing hard work will triumph in the end.
“As long as I keep training hard and beating the guys that are put in front of me, I know for a fact that my name will be out there sooner or later,” he said. “I’ll never go unnoticed beating everyone. Keep knocking them down and I will get noticed. I will make it to the UFC.” His goal right now is a trip to Los Angeles to train with Kenny ‘KenFlo’ Florian, one of the top featherweight contenders. Fadai has an open invite. To that end, a fundraiser is being held Feb. 22 at the Echo Room. The Sabah Fadai Road To UFC event will go from 9 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, good for entry plus a free highball or domestic bottled beer. The Echo Room will have drink specials and appetizers available and there will be a raffle. All proceeds raised will go towards Fadai’s dream. “I just messaged Kenny a couple days ago, and he’s ready for me,” he said. The event Facebook page can be found at facebook. com/ThePersianWarrior.

B O R REBACH, Margaret went to her Lord on February 03, 2013 at her home in Chilli- BORREBACH wack, BC. She was born on January 8, 1920 in Steenwijk, the Netherlands. Margaret is survived by her three stepchildren: Marianne (Don) Gustafson, Albert (Ann) Borrebach, Louise (Rob) Aellen, eleven grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren, also her many special nieces and nephews in the Netherlands. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Borrebach in 2002. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday February 12, 2012 from the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901 Victoria Ave. Chilliwack. Burial will follow at the Chilliwack Cemeteries. (Apr. 11, 1924 - Feb. 3, 2013) Bill was born in Winnipeg but moved to Vancouver after serving in the RCNVR during WWII. While stationed in Halifax, he met and married Irene “Gerry”. During his working life he was an active member of the Sheet Metal Contractors Association. He spent the past fifteen years in Chilliwack where he was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was involved with his local homeowners association. Bill leaves behind Gerry, his wife of sixty-eight years as well as his children Lynn Slater, Larry (Georgina) Miller and Lorraine (Gordon) McKinnon. He is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren as well as one sister and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. At his request there will be no service.
