Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News As candles flickered in the darkness Sunday night, family and friends remembered a woman with a gentle soul, beautiful eyes, a warm smile and a big heart. About 75 people gathered outside the home of Leanne Friesen for a candlelight vigil in her memory. People cried and hugged during the solemn occasion, which included many parents and children from the close-knit neighbourhood. Leanne, 40, was fatally shot last Wednesday night at her home in the 34800 block of Cassiar Court in Abbotsford. Her estranged husband, Jeff Friesen, 40, has been charged with second-degree murder and is set to make his first appearance in court today (Tuesday, Feb. 12). During the vigil, several family members addressed the crowd, thanking them for their support during a difficult time. “She was my soul, my half. I will miss my sister,” said Tammie Mack, Leanne’s identical twin sister. Also on hand were Leanne’s children – an 11-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl. “We’ll take good care of them,” a family member assured the crowd. A man responded by saying that he and the other neighbours would also be there for the kids: “We are your extended family.” “We love you!” shouted another neighbour, as Leanne’s son quietly said, “Thank you.” People who could not be at the vigil posted photos of lit candles on Leanne’s Facebook memorial page. Many of them were from Westbank, Kelowna and Peachland – the areas where Leanne grew up before moving to Abbotsford about 10 years ago. Facebook photo

Leanne was born just five minutes after Tammie, but Leanne often took on the big sister role. “She was an awesome sister. We were always watching out for each other no matter what … but she acted like the older sister. She always had to tell me how to dress,” Tammie laughed through tears. She said her sister’s death will leave a void in the world. She described Leanne as “fun-loving, warm, bubbly, a good listener” and someone who liked to take charge and stay busy. “She would always make sure everything was done. She would always have to fix everybody’s problems before her own.” Tammie said Leanne loved to have fun. One of her favourite things to do was to get dressed up and go out with friends. She always had a smile on her face and had a sarcastic sense of humour that kept others laughing, Tammie said. “She always had a twinkle in her eye.” Leanne, whose

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for B.C. has redrawn the proposed federal riding for MissionMatsqui, which will expand south into Abbotsford, and drop Pitt Meadows and most of Maple Ridge. Mission-MatsquiFraser Canyon will be one of the six new ridings up for grabs the next time Prime Minister Stephen Harper drops the writ. According to the commission, significant growth in those suburban areas prompted the proposed change. Most of northern Abbotsford would be in the riding, including Sumas Mountain east from the Vedder River to Atkinson Road, Lower Sumas Mountain Road, north along Sumas Way, then continuing west along MacClure Road to Mt. Lehman Road. The remainder of the city would be linked with Abbotsford-Sumas in another electoral riding. The population for Mission-Matsqui is estimated to be

tions of Garibaldi Provincial Park. To the south, the riding will include everything northeast of Abbotsford running along Maclure Road and across the Lower Sumas Mountain Road. The commission was set up last February to reconfigure B.C.’s existing 36 federal electoral districts due to population increases.

A man whom Abbotsford Police had issued a public warning about last April has been charged with the sexual assault of a teen girl. Anton Ellis Foulds, 36, was arrested Thursday, two days after the attack. He has been charged with sexual assault and robbery. Const. Once at that location, the man sexually assaulted and attempted to rob her. He then left the scene. MacDonald said the girl contacted someone she knew, who then drove her to the hospital and called police. She had suffered serious injuries, and was kept in the hospital for tests and observation.

“It was a horrible, horrible outcome for that young girl,” MacDonald said.

Last April, the APD warned the public that Foulds was being released from prison, and that he had an extensive criminal history that included sexual assault and multiple robberies. He was released from another province, after having served his full sentence, and was expected to move to Abbotsford. At the time, police said he had 25 convictions, all in B.C. His last one was in Victoria in 2003 for robbery and the “heinous sexual assault” of a woman, according to police.

Hockey Academy Consistent with its commitment to educational excellence, MEI is announcing its intention to create a hockey academy for the 2013-2014 school year. Under the direction of Peter Hay, local educator, hockey coach, and president of PHD Hockey Development and the Abbotsford Junior Heat Hockey Club, the MEI Hockey Academy will work with student-athletes from grades 2 through 12 (based on registration) who desire to be part of a demanding program focused on:

• Skills-based on-ice instruction • Pro goalie instruction • Progressive dry-land training • Values-based character development • Ongoing spiritual formation • School-centered academic support Academy members will be full participants in MEI’s vibrant community, taking part in a variety of school programs.

Peter Hay

Raised in Abbotsford Minor Hockey, Peter Hay went on to play many years of hockey at the Junior A and NCAA Div 1 College levels before advancing to the AHL and ECHL Pro leagues. Peter learned a great deal playing at the higher levels and wants to help young players with their goals of reaching their potential. Peter has brought his playing experience into coaching as he worked closely as an Assistant Coach with the WHL's Chilliwack Bruins and was the head instructor of the CMS Hockey Academy. Peter continues to run his own hockey training program out of Abbotsford called PHD while also directing the Abbotsford Junior Heat spring hockey program. Peter is very excited to continue his coaching in the MEI Hockey Academy.

Ralph Vos Jr. has played hockey for over 25 years and has been training players in Abbotsford since 1995. Ralph was trained by some of the best instructors in Canada. In addition to his extensive experience playing hockey, Ralph was an Assistant Coach with the Abbotsford Pilots (Jr. B) for 3 years, Regional Scout for the Chilliwack Chiefs (Jr. A), and on-ice instructor at the Yale Hockey Academy for 4 years. Many of Ralph’s students are currently playing in Europe, NCAA, ECHL, WHL, BCHL, PIJHL and other leagues. So much so, says the ARCC, that it is unreasonably disturbing to women who may have had abortions, and/or are not Christians. “Council has a responsibility to

remain secular and unbiased,” maintains the ARCC. From the perspective of city hall, which created a bylaw in 2000 regulating the type of signage allowed for non-profit groups, the Right-to-Life display is on private land and does not contravene any civic law. Allowing groups to convey messages important to their causes does not automatically place civic government in a position of endorsement or support. The property is owned by a farmer and businessman, who says “... in Canada there is the freedom to express views and opinions.” He is quite correct. Those who express opposition to such a display are exercising the same rights to free speech as those who put it up. To muzzle one would be to muzzle the other.

Other Hand You know how it is … you’re watching TV, a commercial comes on and you pay no attention until “the key words” are spoken, and they resonate. This was the case the other night, when I heard “more people own smart phones than own toothbrushes”! By the time I looked up, the commercial was over, so I have no idea what it was promoting – mobile devices or dental hygiene. Either way, if true, it is a shocking revelation. Since I was watching a Detroitarea station, I assume the “more people” statistic referred to Americans, which is both startling and sad that more people in the “land of opportunity” value their fancy phones more

than (or are unable to afford to) maintain their teeth. Of course, what is common south of the border is generally common here, too. Which says a great deal about the priorities and cultural mores of North Americans. It also says a lot about the way we communicate these days … why bother to smile, speak or meet faceto-face when all anyone seems to do these days is talk and text. And with rotting teeth and halitosis, the result of those who don’t brush, perhaps that’s a good thing. While I’m not a compulsive brusher, I do visit the pearly whites at least once per day, and spend as much as a smart phone on regular dental check-ups. I am also a hoarder of old toothbrushes, more of them sitting around in tin cans in my workshop than I care to count. They are handy little scrub brushes to clean stuff, allowing me to get at the grime and mung collected in the

tiniest nooks and crannies. There’s even a couple of new ones stashed (in containers) in the console of my truck, in case I forget my shaving kit on trips out of town. And in my bathroom more reside

They, however, aren’t seeing the action they formerly did since I acquired a slick electric model promoted so often on TV, perhaps only on stations other than the one noted at the opening of this commentary. tle rotating bristles delving between the molars. One thing I discovered, just prior to spending 10 minutes wiping toothpaste off the bathroom mirror, the counter and my chest, is that you don’t turn them on until they’re in your mouth! I also learned the true meaning of “gag reflex” when I used it to clean the back of my tongue. However, like everything else, there’s a learning curve, and I am finally comfortable with mechanized toothbrushes. I can’t wait until, like smart phones, the latest must-have version debuts. Then the old one will be happily put to work as a cleaning tool for things less sanitary than my teeth. And perhaps by that time, I’ll also have learned how to fully use the “smart” capabilities of my mobile device, and should I get a “face time” phone call, at least I’ll have clean teeth to smile with.

I was wondering why, in the City of Abbotsford, you can cut down a 100- or more year-old tree? The only stipulation is that you have to plant two seedlings in its place. So what they are saying is one huge tree is equal to two very small plants? Don’t the trees help, when it

comes to the ozone layer, and help with the oxygen we breathe? If you ask me, I think it is very sad that city hall allows this to happen. A thin tree or a shrub can’t compare to a beautiful, huge tree.

The other day I was getting some numbers together for a grant application, and I decided to calculate our gallery’s visitor count for 2012. I added the weekly totals for the whole year and pressed “Enter.” 11,594. What? 11,594 people visited the Kariton Art Gallery last year? Our little red house on the lake? I returned to the spreadsheet and added the numbers again. 11,594. I looked at each weekly total and ensured all the numbers made sense, that some typo was not erroneously inflating the count. After about a half hour of review and multiple returns to the spreadsheet, I finally began to accept this new revelation. As far as art galleries go, this number may not be particularly significant to some however, the fact that the total is over 5,000 more than the previous year gave me cause for wonder. I find it incredibly inspiring that so many members of the Abbotsford community sup-

port the local artists whose artwork is showcased at the gallery year-round, and that so many come out to enjoy the amazing talents of the local musicians featured in the Envision Concert in the Park Series in the “backyard” of the gallery each summer. I’d like to thank the members of the Abbotsford community, your support of our local artists. Your presence is so important to them and to the insurance that opportunities will continue to be available for artists to showcase their talents in the future. Many say that the arts are sorely underfunded, and this statement is unfortunately quite true. However, all the funding in the world cannot compensate for the value that the community brings. Thank you, members of the Abbotsford community, for your valuable support of the arts.

Road safety ‘in motion’

One of Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion has formed the basis for the latest poster in the Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) road-safety campaign. The poster states “Newton says: A body in motion stays in motion until … your head hits the windshield.” It pictures the front mangled end of a small car, including a gaping

hole in the driver’s side of the windshield. Const. Ian MacDonald said the photo is from an actual collision that took place in 2008. In that incident, two cars crashed head-on at an Abbotsford intersection, where one driver was heading straight and the other was making a left turn. MacDonald said the driver of the car pictured was

not wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious head injuries when he struck the windshield. He said neither driver was going particularly fast, but the collision illustrates how crucial it is to stay alert on the roads. “It’s trying to show that there are people who ignore traffic laws … but our point of emphasis is that you can’t ignore the law of physics.” The APD has

Focus on moderate middle in pipeline debate: Moore ‘Extreme’ voices shouldn’t dominate as B.C. mulls oil exports, says federal cabinet minister Black Press

B.C.’s senior federal cabinet minister in the Harper government is urging other politicians not to be swayed by extremists who are dead-set against new oil pipelines through the province. James Moore predicted Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline and Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline through the Lower Mainland (including Abbotsford) will dominate debate in the coming provincial election. “I just hope we also

have a reasoned debate,” Moore said in an interview in Surrey, where he was addressing the Surrey Board of Trade. “There are those who don’t believe we should be developing our natural resources at all. And they will come up with any argument, rational or not, to stop us.” But he said most are more moderate and prepared to export Canadian resources if it’s done in a way that’s environmentally and socially responsible. “In a lot of these debates it polarizes

very quickly and you get very loud and aggressive voices at the extreme ends of the debate, when the vast majority of the public is in the middle,” Moore said. “It’s important that all levels of goverment realize that’s where the public is.” Moore said he welcomes B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake’s exploration of ways to strengthen the response to spills of any hazardous products on land, including from truck or rail cars. “Some of these are areas of shared responsibility,” he said,

noting the federal government licences the transport of goods across provincial boundaries. “We’re doing a wholesale look at all of our policies when it comes to protecting our environment,” Moore said. “If Terry Lake has good ideas, we’ll be glad to take a look at them and consider them.” In response to an audience question about coal dust from trains as coal exports through Metro Vancouver increase, Moore said he believes it should be possible for railways to address the prob-

lem. “With coal getting to market there are huge benefits, lots of money to be made

and I don’t think it’s unfair to suggest there be some reciprocity,” he said. His address fo-

Young director hopes his ailing father will be able to view his work

They shuffle slowly along the field, their eyes lifeless but their arms outstretched, grasping at anything that crosses their path. Zombies have invaded Sumas Mountain and are moving in on their next meal. Relentlessly moving forward, the undead suddenly stop, frozen by a single word. Cut! Fourteen-year-old director Nathaniel Hall wants them to do it again. A digital media arts student at the Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts Sumas (ASIA Sumas), Hall has always been fascinated by movies. “Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to be a director and then I wanted to be an actor and now I’m doing both in this film,” said Hall. Recently, he had a dozen volunteers, friends and family members (including his mother Leanne and his brother Isaiah) on Sumas Mountain, in the cold, to film his latest project, a yet unnamed zombie epic. “It’s either the End of the World Zombie Apocalypse or the End of the Beginning Zombie Apocalypse. I’m just deciding which one.” While he’s done other school assignments and some shorts on YouTube, this is the biggest project he has ever taken on. He’s been at it for eight months and feels it should be completed by the summer. But he’d like to speed up the process. “He’s hoping to get it done sooner so his dad can see it before he passes away,” explained his mother. Nathaniel’s father is living in Edmonton and is currently battling cancer. During the Christmas break, Nathaniel travelled to Alberta to visit

his ailing father. He is dedicating his film to him and hopes he can view the finished product. With a tight time frame to work with,

Nathaniel continues to move forward. As well as directing and acting in the production, he is also the writer and editor. Using a $2,000

video camera that was donated to him by a family friend, Hall is trying to make the shoot as professional as possible. Sometimes it can be difficult as some adults, as well-intended as they may

be, have a difficult time taking direction from someone so young. “Usually I’m in charge, but sometimes people will help me with stuff. I mean, I just started,” said Nathaniel. But his mother said if her son disagrees with a suggestion, he tells the person “straight up.” “He has the final say,” she said. While it is a zombie tale, Leanne

said there are some interesting parallels in the story and her son’s life. “I think mostly it’s about people surviving. I found it very interesting, the story he decided to write, because it reminds me of us three. Learning to be together ... finding a family in the midst of chaos.” When the project is completed, Nathaniel said he will approach the local theatres and

ask them if he can hold a special screening. The plan is to charge $5 admission fee with all proceeds going towards cancer research. He also wants to enter it in the Vancouver Film Festival. But he has to complete the project first. To view a preview of the film, visit tinyurl.com/awf3gn8

The eight women who gathered recently at the home of Laurie Mossey of Abbotsford had something heartwrenching in common: They have all lost a child within the past 14 months. They were bonded by a grief that only those who have gone through it can understand, and they wanted to pass on the act of kindness

that they had experienced through Mossey. Mossey runs The Pajama Project, which delivers a pair of pajamas to moms coping with the death of a child. When she heard about the horrifying mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut on Dec. 14, Mossey thought of the grieving families of the 20 children who were

killed. She sent an email to a Catholic church that was among those handling the public outpouring of support, told them about The Pajama Project and asked where she could send packages for the moms. She received a reply the next morning with an address to send the gifts. Meanwhile, Mossey had already connected with many of the moms to whom she had previously sent pajamas – a gesture of kindness and comfort in a dark time. They, too, were moved to help. They gathered at Mossey’s home to help her package the pajamas and prepare cards of support. “We understand what they (the Newtown moms) are feeling and wanted to do something,” Mossey said. She said the women who came to

She had been moved by the pair of pj’s she received after the November 2011 ecstasy-related death of her only child, Tyler Miller, at age 20. She was touched that someone knew exactly how she felt – so consumed with grief that she didn’t even want to get dressed. Mossey began sending pajamas to moms she heard about either from news reports or through word of mouth. The project continues to grow. Last month, a partnership with the Abbotsford Hospice Society resulted in “Wear Your Pajamas to Work or School Day” to raise funds for the group. This year, Mossey plans to establish The Pajama Project as a non-profit society, and wants to host weekend retreats for grieving moms. Brust back in business Goalie at his adventurous best as Heat sweep Monsters

If that bearded guy in the Dos Equis beer commercials is the most interesting man in the world, Barry Brust must be, at the very least, the most interesting goalie in the world. The Abbotsford Heat netminder was worth the price of admission on Sunday, blending big-time saves with adventurous poke-checks and even the odd body check, backstopping his team to a 1-0 shootout win over the Lake Erie Monsters. Brust stopped 38 shots in regulation and overtime, and turned aside four of six Monsters shooters in the breakaway contest. It was the second straight shootout win for the Heat – they also edged Lake Erie 4-3 on Saturday. “Barry is an interesting cat,” Heat head coach Troy Ward noted with a grin afterward, “but he finds a way to get it done. BRUST “We give guys freedom to make reads and make plays, and Barry’s no different. With us as a group of coaches back there, it’s a lot of patience – a lot of, every now and then, ‘What did he just do?’ “But at the same time, that’s Barry and that’s who he is. That’s how he likes to paint the picture, and we trust him.” Brust got off to a red-hot start to the season, breaking Johnny Bower’s 55-year-old AHL record for longest shutout streak. He was selected for the AHL’s all-star game, but his play slipped in the month of January. Danny Taylor surged to the top of the Heat’s goaltending depth chart, and Brust’s starts were few and far between. Taylor’s signing and ensuing recall by the Calgary Flames last week opened the door for Brust to get back into the swing of things, and after a rocky outing in a 6-2 loss to the Rochester

The Heat keeper has beaten the Colorado Avalanche affiliate four times at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre in 2012-13, including three times via shutout. “I’d rather see them than Rochester, that’s for sure,” Brust joked. “It’s just one of those things. “The more you play, the better you feel,” he added. “That last few games I played it just seemed like a lot of things weren’t bouncing my way and every decision I

made was wrong. “It was just getting a feel for the game and trusting my instincts.” Sunday’s performance was classic Brust – in addition to stopping every puck he saw, he also ran over Monsters defenceman Cameron Gaunce as the latter chased a shoot-in deep in the Heat zone. The Heat goalie flattened Gaunce, but the officials somehow saw fit to assess the Lake Erie player an interference penalty. Brust’s best saves came in the waning minutes of the third period. Say this for the University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams – they sure didn't skimp on the drama on the weekend. Hosting the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, the Cascades women's and men's hoopsters blended dominant victories with heartbreaking losses. The UFV women, ranked No. 3 in the nation, stole defeat from the jaws of victory on Friday evening. Leading by three points with 10 seconds left in regulation, and with possession of the ball, they somehow managed to lose 72-70 in overtime. "It was just a shocking series of events," Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer said. "They stepped up and took it away from us." UFV turned the ball over twice in the dying seconds of regulation, and a free throw by Taiysa Worsfeld and a jump shot by Jen Ju sent the game to OT. In the extra session, WolfPack forward Tracy Kocs drew a foul as time expired and knocked down two free throws to lift her team to an improbable upset win. "We pride ourselves on knowing what to do in those situations, and typically we do," Tuchscherer said. "But we managed it just terribly. "We were all just stunned. The poor shooting aside, the Cascades did some good things Saturday. They set a

team record for fewest points allowed in a quarter, out-scoring TRU 18-2 in the second, and they led by 14 at half and by as many as 10 in the fourth. But the WolfPack finished the game on a 7-0 run, capped by Troy Grant's fallaway three-pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining. "We played great defence both days, but our turnovers and a lack of finishing inside was the difference on Saturday,” UFV coach Adam Friesen noted. n The Cascades wrap up the regular season with a home-andhome set vs. Trinity Western – Friday at UFV's Envision Athletic Centre (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday at the Langley Events Centre (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.). The UFV women (16-4) are tied with UBC for first place in the Pacific Division, and can lock up the top seed with a pair of wins over TWU (7-13). The BMX Supercross World Cup will not be returning to Abbotsford as scheduled in 2013. Cycling BC announced last week

that the competition, set for Sept. 6-7, has been cancelled. The provincial cycling body hosted a UCI-sanctioned Supercross World Cup meet at the Exhibition Park track in

September 2012 – the first time it had been held in Canada. But the event lost money, and last Wednesday’s press release referred to “substantial financial difficulties” for Cycling BC.

“We’re still just figuring out the final cost of it,” said Nicole Rochfort, Cycling BC’s communications and events co-ordinator. “But in our budgeting for 2013, with the loss last year, there was no way to come back full force and be able to put on such a great event.” Abbotsford’s BMX track has undergone a series of upgrades over the past two years to allow for national team training and to host major races. A supercross start hill was built in 2011, making it Canada’s only supercross facility, and the track was reconfigured and permanent bleachers were installed in 2012. The local World Cup event suffered, though, because it occurred just after the London Olympics. While most World Cup races attract between 130 and 150 riders from around the globe, Abbotsford’s drew just 70, and Olympic champions Maris Strombergs of Latvia and Mariana Pajon of Colombia were among those who elected to stay home. Fewer riders meant less money collected in entry fees, and fewer big names in the field contributed to lower-than-expected attendance. Rochfort said the event drew between 1,500 and 1,700 spectators over the two days, while they had been hoping for between 2,500 and 3,000. “A lot of the national teams’ budgets were spent putting riders through the Olympics,” she said. “We had an understanding of that. The riders that did come were good quality riders and fantastic to watch, but there weren’t the numbers that are typically seen at a World Cup.” Rochfort said Cycling BC would like to bring the Supercross World Cup back to Abbotsford at some point in the future. “Moving forward, we learned a lot from last year, and we’re in a better position to take it on again when the organization is in more of a stable place,” she said. “We need to get our health back up to where it should be, and where our members are able to rely on us in all aspects of the sport.”

After a short struggle with Cancer, Mary passed away on January 28, 2013. Mary is survived by her siblings, Kathy (Dan), Rudy (Nettie), Neil, Martha, Betty (Ernest), David (Diane) and Dan, many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission for the care given to Mary during the last days of her life. Cremation services will be private and as per Maryâ€™s request, there will be no service.

MacNUTT ~ Al has slipped the surly bonds of earth. Al passed away January 29th, 2013 after a battle with cancer and will be terribly missed. He leaves his wife of sixty years, Irene, two sons and many grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at the Hendersonâ€™s Funeral Home, Abbotsford, February 16 @ 13:00 hrs. Rita passed away peacefully on February 3 at Blenheim Lodge, Vancouver in her 93rd year. She is survived by her children, Paul (Rosemary), David (Linda), Doug (Jan), Don (Wendy), and Beverley Dodd (Chris). Rita is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Rita was born in the family home on 8th Ave. Vancouver and remained very close to her parents, Harry & Sadie Steeves, and her siblings Bud, Jack and Shirley. Following graduation from Kitsilano High School in 1938, she attended the Vancouver Normal School and taught school briefly in Chimney Creek, near Williams Lake, and Port Mellon. In 1943, Rita married Fred Bingham and they moved to Abbotsford in 1951. Rita taught in the Abbotsford School District for many years and was an active member of Calvin Presbyterian Church. Rita and Fred also supported Maranatha Baptist Church. Fred passed away in 2003 and Rita moved back to Vancouver in 2004, where she made many friends and enjoyed her new church, Kitsilano Christian Community Church. Keats Island and Keats Camps were an important part of Ritaâ€™s life for over 80 years. She first visited Keats in 1928, and owned cottages there with her family for the rest of her life. She attended the camp as a camper and later as a leader and director, and was very proud that many of her children and grandchildren worked and volunteered at the camp. Rita greatly enjoyed family times and the beauty of Keats up until her 92nd year. She is fondly remembered at Keats for her lovely garden as well as her hospitality and many projects to improve the cottage. Rita was a patient, kind, supportive and loving friend and a respected role model for her family; she will be missed. We feel blessed that we were able to share her life for so long. The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Doug and Jan Bingham for their care and support of Rita over the past 8 years. Many thanks also to Liz Gardner for her friendship and service, and the staff at Blenheim Lodge for their kindnesses and excellent care during the past year. A celebration of Ritaâ€™s life will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Fairview Baptist Church, 1708 West 16th Avenue, Vancouver BC. It was a simpler time in the nowdefunct community of Ridgedale, an area that used to be north Matsqui, near the Fraser River. It was settled by Swedes and Norwegians between the late 1890s and the early 1900s.
