Critical habitat at stake: gravel committee Dogs stolen Jennifer Feinberg The Progress
Members of the Fraser River Gravel Stewardship Committee are concerned about potential habitat damage from the 2013 gravel removal plan for a stretch of the Fraser River near Chilliwack. The group fired off a letter to Emergency Management
BC (EMBC) about proposed gravel extraction dated Jan. 28. They zero in on the Gill and Hamilton gravel bars near Chilliwack, with suggestions offered for alternative, less damaging sites. “These annual programs, unless accompanied by a longterm comprehensive management plan for that entire section of the Fraser River, could
do significant long-term damage to the habitats and hydrological features that indeed build fish habitat in that critical gravel reach of the river,” said Otto Langer, a fisheries biologist and member of FRGSC, in a release. The stewardship committee which comprises recreational fishermen, scientists and citizens is focuses on “a consid-
erable amount of high-quality Chinook salmon rearing habitat” that is at stake along the southern edge of the bar from Hamilton Bar to Gill Bar. There will be about 1,500 puzzles for sale, most priced at $1-$4, plus specialty puzzles selling for no more than $12. The sale runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 8), and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the library. Cancer screening advocate succumbs A man once called the godfather of federal Liberals in B.C. passed away in Chilliwack this week following a long battle with cancer. Hal Singleton carried the Liberal flag high in the province, even after the Reform Party swept to prominence in the 1990s. Despite two unsuccessful election bids under the Liberal banner, Singleton remained a staunch party supporter, first as constituency president, then as president of the Liberal party’s council of constituency presidents in B.C. In November, that dedication earned him special recognition at an event that drew Liberal leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau. Said Trudeau: “Your service to your country, whether it was in the military or whether it was as an active member of the political fight here in Chilliwack, it is your commitment to your community, to your family and
to your country and that does both you and your entire community very, very proud.” Lately Singleton focused his energies on advocating for better screening for the early signs of colorectal cancer. The disease, which is easily treated in its early stages, is usually fatal without an early diagnosis. It kills roughly 1,100 people each year in B.C. and is the second most fatal cancer among men and third most fatal among women. Singleton argued that had he been properly diagnosed early on, the disease would not have entered the terminal stage. Singleton lived to see his call answered. In early November the provincial government announced an early screening program for colorectal cancer. A Celebration of Life is planned for Feb. 11 at Cooks Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m.

in Vancouver found in Agassiz
A theft that sparked a frantic search throughout the night in Vancouver ended happily in Agassiz on Wednesday. RCMP located a truck that had been stolen late Tuesday. But more importantly, they found the dogs that were inside the vehicle when it was taken. The truck belonged to Vancouver dog walking service. It was dropping off an animal in East Vancouver when it was stolen with four dogs still inside. Two were located nearby, however there was no sign of the truck or the two remaining dogs. That prompted a search throughout the night as the company owner sought desperately to find the missing animals. Wednesday morning Agassiz RCMP spotted the stolen truck with the two dogs still inside on a tree farm in Agassiz. There was no driver. The dogs were transported to a local veterinarian to get checked out and warmed up. The dogs appeared to be in good health, just cold, wet and dirty. The dog-walking company has been advised and are currently on their way out to the Agassiz RCMP detachment to pick up the dogs. “We are really happy the dogs were safely located,” says Corporal Tammy Hollingsworth. “Such a good end to a story that could have had a very different ending.” The Agassiz RCMP are continuing their investigation. Northern traffic stop leads to $13,000 seizure in Chilliwack A routine traffic stop in northern B.C. has led to the seizure of $13,000 in cash from a suitcase at the Chilliwack Greyhound station, police say. RCMP in Fort St. John had pulled a vehicle over for speeding on January 25. Three people were charged and the vehicle searched. According to Fort St. John RCMP, police found 705 grams of marijuana, six ounces of cocaine, over $13,000 in cash, a knife, a crowbar and a can of bear spray. But that’s not all. During the search, RCMP officers located a shipping receipt in the vehicle for a package sent through the Greyhound Bus Depot addressed to a recipient in Chilliwack. The package was allegedly sent by one of the accused who was in police custody. The traffic member suspected there may have been more contraband sent via Greyhound and requested the package be intercepted by Chilliwack RCMP and held pending a search warrant. Chilliwack RCMP located the package, which was identified as a suitcase, at the bus station. A search warrant was granted and police located $13,000 in cash concealed in a container inside the suitcase. RCMP are continuing their investigation.

detected. “That’s what I find worrisome.” Council advised FHA that the citizens of Chilliwack need to be given the opportunity to comment on the chlorination of their drinking water through a public consultation process, and Dr. Lem said they would be there in support. The “byproducts” of chlorination, namely the chemical odour and taste, are usually among the public’s concerns, Lem added, and Fraser Health officials will be on hand at the public hearing to provide information and “allay fears” of citizens. Lem actually complimented Chilliwack on its delicious water. “I will say this, it is very tasty water, and I would like to commend

The incidents of contamination in recent years were a result of specific incidents with water reservoirs, which were quickly fixed by diligent city staff, said Gaetz. “This kind of news is coming to us as rather shocking,” she said about chlorination being imposed. City officials fired off a news release shortly after the meeting. “Protecting public health and our resources are top priorities, but council is concerned about how adding a disinfectant such as chlorine, could affect the quality of our award-winning water,” Gaetz commented in the release. Coun. Jason Lum said “another unacceptable risk” was the prospect of incinerating waste by Metro Vancouver affecting the local airshed, and he urged Lem to make an official statement on the risk that garbageburning posed for the region. “You have truly picked a battle with the community,” said Coun. Chuck Stam, who also wanted to know how many people actually turned up sick from the last three contamination incidents, but there was no data available. “No one is getting sick from our water,” he said. Coun. Sue Attrill called the decision to move to chlorination, “rash” and suggested more testing. The mayor is also adamant about looking for alternatives to chlorine. “We have asked that the FHA allow a review of all options before ordering the addition of a secondary disinfectant in to our drinking water system,” said Gaetz in the release after the meeting. City staff have a stringent and comprehensive water quality sampling program, with an emergency standby chlorination system in place. But the water testing only accounts for .0000003% of water in the system. Secondary disinfection is common practice in Canadian municipal drinking water systems the size of Chilliwack’s council was told. But Coun. Stam countered that demanding chlorination because everyone else does it, was the “shabbiest of answers.” FHA reps said they will exercise their “legislative responsibility” to protect public health and “impose” secondary disinfection, since it is considered the only “viable”
way to ensure minimal microbial content. “Once you reach a certain size, you need different measures and a slightly different structure.” Lem said he could appreciate council’s point of view and community pride in the water. Some of the councillors were visibly angry. “But I can tell you the risk is very, very real,” he said, adding that when the kidneys shut down from E.coli infection, “it’s not pretty.” The health officer said he foresees the Chilliwack water incidents as “continuing” to happen as result of the multiple pathways of potential contamination and the limits of the system, since the backup chlorine is only released once contamination is

It took a cultural shift to battle drinking and driving, perhaps it’s time to make another shift so fewer pedestrians die in our streets. As with drunk driving, we can do that by changing laws, attitudes and public perception. Tougher laws and costly penalties made it unacceptable to drink and drive. Groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving got behind the campaigns and programs such as Operation Red Nose made it easier for people to make the right choice during the holidays. Corporations launched campaigns to make it cool to be the designated driver and drivers — thus educated and forewarned — changed their behaviour. It may take similar efforts to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities, which last year totalled 63, according to the BC Coroner’s Service. That’s almost the same number of people who were killed by drunk drivers last year, yet where’s the outcry? The sad fact is it’s walking seniors, 70 years and older, who die the most often in a collision with a car. Where do most of these fatalities occur? At intersections and marked crosswalks. When? In December and January, when it’s dark and rainy. In fact, people of all ages are at greatest risk during this province’s gloomiest months. Pedestrians need to understand that there are no safe intersections or crosswalks. Adults must apply the same safety rules they teach their kids kids: be aware of your surroundings, look both ways, make eye contact with drivers. And sorry, seniors, old age is not an exemption from the crucial lessons we direct at our youth. But it doesn’t stop there: Driver education must be enhanced, laws must be toughened and outwear must be reflective, or at the very least lighter in colour. Pedestrian fatalities aren’t any less serious than drunk driving deaths. So why are they treated that way? ~ Black Press

Setting the stage for senate election in B.C.
VICTORIA – Cannon will roar across the Inner Harbour on the morning of Feb. 12 to mark the opening of the 2013 legislature session. Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon will inspect the troops and present her inaugural Throne Speech, setting out the B.C. Liberal government’s goals for the coming year. This ritual will kick off a legislative session that is expected to run until March 14, where the official Parliamentary Calendar shows a three-week break for Easter. Debate is unlikely to resume in April, as the election campaign will be in full roar by then. This means there will be a grand total of 19 sitting days to push through a budget and a raft of legislation. Here’s my unofficial preview.

The pre-election budget will be presented Feb. 19 by Finance Minister Michael de Jong. Premier Christy Clark has decreed that it must be balanced, and the government has made extra efforts to armour itself against what will likely be the loudest debate ahead. First, de Jong Tom FLETCHER held a pre-budget meeting of the government’s bluechip forecast council in public. This provided a visual record of what happens every year, when the finance ministry solicits the same sort of independent advice as most competent democracies, and bases its numbers on that. Then the finance ministry hired
former Bank of Montreal chief economist Tim O’Neill, who will act as an unofficial version of the parliamentary budget officer in Ottawa. Now that we have simultaneous oversight of child welfare and the police, the next step is to extend it to finance bureaucrats. Regardless of party, the government has to produce a three-year set of forecasts to replace the current one. A lot of election energy will go into competing claims about who is better at predicting the future. Another new law to be given high priority is one setting up senate elections, to be run in connection with the May 14 provincial vote. Alberta pioneered this, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recent round of senate appointments included Calgary lawyer Doug Black, who won an Alberta
senate election held last year. There was no one appointed to replace Gerry St. Germain, who bid an emotional adieu as a Conservative senator for B.C. last year. St. Germain was instrumental in uniting the splintered federal Conservatives, but he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75, having been appointed by Brian Mulroney in 1993 after losing his seat as an MP. Why would this senate reform be so urgent for the B.C. Liberals now? Well, turnout for the 2009 election fell to around 50 per cent, a record low for a provincial vote. If that downward trend is reversed this year, it will be in large part because people are still mad enough about the harmonized sales tax and a range of other issues to get off the couch and kick some B.C. Liberal butt.

Electing senators remains a popular notion, especially with older, conservative-minded voters in B.C. who identified with the Reform Party. The first-ever senate election looks like the best available shot at boosting turnout among people who are not likely to vote NDP, and who may also be disengaged from provincial politics. And then there is the provincial sales tax bill. Another kick in the slats for the movie business, for one, and don’t hold your breath for NDP leader Adrian Dix to produce a solution in the wake of his recent trip to Tinsel Town. The performance of the governing party and the opposition will be scrutinized as never before. Why the sudden Bible controversy? As we read in Tuesday’s Progress, BCHA president Ian Bushfield argues that by allowing Bibles in schools, religious ideology is promoted when in fact no one promotes anything. Gideon Bibles are merely offered. Aside from the fact that this ancient book holds immense historical value, whereby presenting itself as a great educational tool, parents are clearly given the choice to reject the Gideon offer of a free Bible. No one forces anything on anyone here! Why, after all these years, is there all of a sudden a problem with free Bibles being offered? Is it possible that the school board for decades failed to recognize that this book poses a danger to young students and their families? Are there any reports of trauma related to free Bibles being offered? Re: Bible distribution in Chilliwack Schools. Should there be distribution of the Koran? Why not? Why not allow the book of Mormon or any other religious text to be available to all students in the public school district. Why choose Grade Five? Why not other Grades? Should the responsibility of teaching faith be left to the family? The questions on this topic are endless. If we allow the distribution of one then we must allow the distribution of all, or we take it out completely and allow those who wish to study and pursue theology in any form to do that as a choice, without the influence or intervention of politicians who feel the need to make these decisions for families. The public school board must either disallow this practice of Bible distribution or open this policy to the distribution of all materials of all faiths.

Humanist arguments challenged deserve to be. According to No. 3 on their mission statement, the BCHA “advocates the use of the scientific method as a guide to distinguish between fact and fiction.” I interpret this to mean that religious literature is regarded as fiction by the BCHA. Now, if we are to employ the scientific method to the Bible, then we can certainly prove that the Bible is fiction—it can’t be proven as fact by the scientific method, therefore, it is fiction. But, if we agree that the Bible can be read as fiction, then, we can also use our scientific method to prove that it is one of the greatest and most important works of literature in human history.
We’re all good so far… Here’s the problem: The No. 1 point on the BCHA’s mission statement is this: “Humanism aims at the fullest development of every human being.” So, the No. 1 aim of a group making front page news by petitioning for a work of fiction to be banned from public schools is the development of human beings? How will censoring the world’s most-popular and most-influential work of literature from our children contribute to their fullest development as thinkers, readers, and human beings?

As Laurie Throness observes, the pot is calling the kettle black. Like the Gideons, the BCHA are pushing an ideology. But I, for one, am not too worried about it. We are all constantly bombarded with ideologies: Apple, McDonald’s, Religion, Science, Journalism, Walmart, Pro Sports… you name it, they all have their own special brand of ideology that they want us to buy into (and I do mean buy into!) I personally support the right of both groups to impose their ideologies on others, but that’s not what I want to talk about here. Rather, I feel the BCHA’s views on this subject are being portrayed as a bit more reasonable than they

market remains a pillar of stability in the mainland, despite the shadow of Vancouver’s
deflating home prices. The B.C. Real Estate Association forecasts that Chilliwack hous-
ing rates will rise two per cent throughout 2013. Although this is slower than the B.C.
average of six per cent, it represents a more stable market – a market that fell only one
per cent in 2012, compared with an 11 per cent drop in the Fraser Valley and 23 per cent

in Vancouver. The average housing price in Chilliwack was $291,960 last month, with 125 residential home sales – up from 113 in Jan. 2012. Among the 1,370 current active listings, single family detached homes can expect to spend an average of 83 days on the market, townhouses 42 days, condos 67 days, and mobile homes 103 days. Properties on an acreage spend about five months on the market before finding a buyer. Owners who bought homes during the 2007-08 boom will have a harder time recouping their cost, and only one house over $1 million changed hands in the last month. Similarly, sales of non-residential properties, including vacant land and commercial spaces, have slumped, but could pick up in the spring. Meanwhile, the rental vacancy rate is high in Chilliwack, at 6.2 per cent for a twobedroom, and the figure continues to climb, having stood at 3.8 per cent only last year. This corresponds with the stagnant rental prices. A two-bedroom goes for an average of $774 in the city, compared with $768 last year. The Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board does not expect mortgage and interest rates to rise significantly. “I don’t think it’s going to be a big boom yet,” says CADREB president Cynthia Admiraal. “I think it’s going to be steady and stable.” Chilliwack still seems to be a buyer’s market, and families are able to fulfill the “dream of a lifestyle” of moving from a big city condo to a smaller city house for the same cost. Gemmell has sold more than 50 copies alone, and she and Cam even got a message from Amazon stating that her book is “sold out”. “It surprises me that, for one, I wrote a book, but also that it’s been so well received,” she said. Gemmell is having an official book launch and signing this Sunday (Feb. 10) at Downtown Sutton Business Centre from 1-5 p.m., and she will be reading from her book at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Avery, now 14, will also be there signing the book. Kate Reid is a word-slinging Canadian singer-songwriter who plays a wicked six-string. She makes her Chilliwack debut on Saturday Feb. 9 in the upstairs lounge at Bozzini’s. She now lives on idyllic Bowen Island just north of Vancouver following years in the heart of Vancity’s culturally diverse east side. Known for a style she once termed “slam poetry meets folk music,” the farm girl raised in Ayr, Ontario has dialled in more directly on the folk, country and roots directions hinted at on the last album and her 2006 debut, Comin’ Alive. Like so many musicians before her, Reid sings that she really is “Doing it for the Chicks.” The title track of her last album, Doing it for the Chicks was written in response to a man who agreed to host a house concert for Reid before realizing that not only is she queer, she sings about it too. Passionately delivering alt-culture songs that move audiences to laugh, think and cry is Reid’s strength. Her live performance lets her fast-talking humour, activist spirit and compassionate take on life’s bittersweet truths shine through. One of her songs, Revolution, is a hard-hitting protest song about violence against women. From Ukulele, with Love Don’t miss Music with Heart: Ukuleles and Valentines with the fast-fingers of some of the most renowned ukulele players in Canada. The Chilliwack Cultural Centre’s Rotary Hall Studio Theatre will be filled with songs of love as The Langley Ukulele Ensemble showcases their expertise and skill with the ukulele on February 10 at 2:30 PM. Songs such as “Somewhere My Love”, “Goodnight Sweetheart”, “When the Moon Hits Your Eyes”, and “Un There Was You” will remind us that there is something for every lovebird in the crowd as the ensemble plucks at our heartstrings. The first in the Rain Mountain Classical Music Series, this jubilant performance is presented in partnership with The Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre Society and The Chilliwack Academy. Featuring “songs of the heart,” the Langley Ukulele Ensemble in Music with Heart will wow the audience as their ‘ukes’ strum the classical works of Brahms, Bach, Mozart, Pachalbel, Gershwin, and Rimski-Korsikovpop; tunes by many artists from the 1950’s to the 80’s, and folk/ ethnic music from a variety of countries. Community Rotary Club of Chilliwack Fraser donates $12,500 for UFV agriculture scholarship
The Rotary Club of Chilliwack Fraser is once again showing its support for local post-secondar y education. The club has donated $12,500 to the University of the Fraser Valley to establish an endowment that will fund a perpetual scholarship for a fulltime student within the Agriculture program. “The commitment by the Rotary Club of Chilliwack Fraser to build an endowment highlights a legacy of giving that will impact student lives now and for future generations,” said UFV Dean of Trades and Technology John English. Supporting education is part of the club’s mandate to support Chilliwack in meaningful ways. “The Rotary Club of Chilliwack Fraser with Rotar y International
strives to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Want to fit into your skinny jeans for life? If your “skinny jeans” fit, you can read on for fun (maybe you’re doing everything right, or maybe you’re young and blessed with great genetics). If you have a pair of pants in your closet that you’d love to get into, read on. I want you to fit into them- for life. Most people’s goal is not just to lose weight- it’s to keep it off. The problem that most people face is not lack of knowledge (most have some clue as to what they should and should not eat), it’s the mindset they have, and relationship they have with food. Never again do I want you to have to say that this is the year you’re going to get back into shape, lose those 10 pounds you gained, etc. Lose the weight and keep it off by following two simple rules:
• Focus on food • Don’t make food your focus It sounds contradictory, but I will explain. Focus on Food
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you will absolutely need to plan, prepare and record your meals. Tanja This means Shaw knowing what you’re going to have in advance, setting yourself up for success by preparing for your meals (for example, having the groceries in the house, packing your own lunch when at work), carefully portioning your appropriate serving size (this may mean
you need to weigh or measure your food, at least at the beginning) and then recording what you ate in a food journal. Time consuming? Maybe. Worth while? Absolutely. A great example of being successful when planning, preparing and recording is one of our long time clients. For the past eight months, she has consistently exercised 4-6 days per week. She lost some weight and inches, but the change was not as dramatic as she would have like. For the first time, last week, she committed to planning all her meals, preparing ahead of time (she even got up early to prepare a tasty chili for that night’s dinner) and she recorded all her meals. Her efforts paid off with a fivepound weight loss in just over a week.
I want you to pause for a second and pay attention to your thoughts. Are you thinking ‘this is way too much work!’ or ‘there’s no way I want to write down everything I eat’, or ‘I would but (enter excuse here)’. You have two choices: you can say ‘oh well’, accept that this is just the way it is and take action, or you can continue doing what you’re doing. Focusing on food also means eating mindfully. Most of us like food, but few of us truly pay attention to the food that we eat. We rush through, or eat while distracted by the television. Chiefs looking to bump slump The Prince George Spruce Kings haven’t had an answer for the Chilliwack Chiefs this season, which makes them the perfect opponent for a Saturday night (7 p.m.) meeting at Prospera Centre. The Chiefs need to end a four game losing skid. And what better opponent than the Sprucies, a team they’ve beaten in six of six head-to-head meetings this year. The domination has been thorough. Once, PG forced the Chiefs to overtime. Beyond that, the margin of victory has been two goals or better in each win. Chilliwack has collectively outscored the Sprucies 25-8. But it’s not the goals against that has concerned PG coach Dave Dupas. It’s his team’s inability to score goals. “The frustrating thing is that the guys just played well all weekend. They really did,” Dupas said following a lateJanuary back-to-back in Prince George. “It was a tough, hard-fought series. Besides saying to them, ‘guys, you’ve got to score more,’ what

Junior A Challenge goes back to Nova Scotia Hockey Canada and the Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Wednesday that Yarmouth, N.S., will host the 2013 World Junior A Challenge. The annual tournament will run Nov. 4-10, and this will be the second year in a row in Yarmouth — the first time in the
tournament’s eight year history that the event will be held in the same city in back to back years. It’s also the first time a city will host the tournament more than once. The 2013 World Junior A Challenge will follow the same format as previous years – two Canadian entries will be joined
by four international teams. The 2013 World Junior A Challenge will be based out of the Mariners Centre, home of the Maritime Hockey League’s Yarmouth Mariners, with surrounding communities also hosting games. See hockeycanada.ca for more info.
Chilliwack scores soggy win over Coquitlam Chilliwack’s U-12 United Select girls traveled to Coquitlam to play a rain-soaked soccer game on Sunday. The locals earned a 2-1 win. Coquitlam took an early 1-0 lead, but Chilliwack locked it down behind the defensive play of Miranda Coombes,
Amber Feaver, Kalista Kirkness, and Madison Steele. Abigail Vandop made several stops to keep her team within one, setting the stage for Grace Vandenbrink to tie things up early in the second half. Vandenbrink played the second half

A very important trio of games for the Chiefs this weekend as they try and snap a losing streak that was extended to four games with losses in Salmon Arm and West Kelowna last weekend. Both losses were winnable games. Saturday’s loss in Kelowna was a tough one as the Chiefs had a 3-0 lead halfway through the game but ended up losing 7-5. It was one of those games that fans love and coaches hate as both teams were poor defensively which led to a ton of scoring chances and obviously goals. It reminded me of an Edmonton Oilers versus Calgar y Flames game from the mid 1980’s. The Chiefs are home for games Saturday versus Prince George and Sunday against Alberni Valley. The Chiefs are once again running their Back To Back promotion. Buy two tickets for Saturday’s game and receive a free ticket for Sunday’s game. Saturday’s game is Country Night brought to you by Country West Supply. Fans are encouraged to dress up in their best cowboy / cowgirl outfits. I’ll be wearing my best chaps for the occasion. The top two teams in the Mainland division will have home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Just a few weeks ago the Chiefs held a five point lead on the third place Spruce Kings before beating
them three times in six days to increase that lead to 11 points. It looked like a pretty safe bet that the Chiefs were going to have that home ice advantage. Now with the second place Chiefs having lost four straight the Spruce Kings are back to within six points. Friday they play Coquitlam, a team which has lost their last two games by a combined score of 18-1, so there’s a good chance Prince George will be four points behind Chilliwack going into Saturday’s game. Sunday is Minor Hockey Night. Note the start time is 5 p.m. All minor hockey players who wear their minor hockey jerseys to the game will be admitted for free. There will be a bouncy castle on the concourse for the kids, courtesy of Fraser Valley Party Rentals, and fans can join the Chiefs players on the ice for a skate following the game. Skate rentals will be available. The Chiefs are right back at it on Monday afternoon for a 2 p.m. game in Coquitlam. There is a fan bus going to this game. The cost is $20, which includes a ticket to the game. The bus will leave from Prospera Centre at 12:15 p.m.. Fundraiser keeps bowling on Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley kicked off its 24th annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser this week. The launch of the event took place Wednesday in Abbotsford at Galaxy Bowladrome, with the Abbotsford Police. It continued today in Chilliwack at Chillibowl Lanes, with an appearance by the
Chilliwack Chiefs. Both events ran from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Bowl for Kids Sake 2013 has more than 20 bowling sessions available, and special arrangements can be made to accommodate groups. Sessions begin Feb. 20 in Chilliwack and wind up March 16 in Abbotsford.
Funds raised by Big Brothers Big Sisters help to screen, support and match a volunteer mentor with a child, creating lasting friendships and providing positive and supportive role models to children, helping them reach their full potential. Board chair Daniel Sorensen said there are 50 local cor-

The 2013 Canadian artistic gymnastics season kicks into high gear this weekend, with Chilliwack’s Zachary Clay travelling to Alberta for the annual Elite Canada competition. Competition begins on Friday and wraps up on Sunday at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park. Elite Canada is an important competition used to identify high performance athletes for the competitive year; and to rank athletes for the Sport Canada Athletes Assistance program and national team status.

DUNCAN Louisa Watson
Louisa Watson Duncan passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the age of 93 years. Louisa was born on November 5, 1919 in Aberdeen, Scotland and came to Canada in 1924 with her family. She grew up in Chilliwack, moving to Trail when she married and then back to Chilliwack. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Rebekahs for many years. She also made many friends selling Avon and loved playing bingo at the Legion every Sunday. She will be sadly missed by her daughters: Diane Townsend and Sylvia Taylor; and by her grandchildren: Donald Meyer, Ginny Waldo, Michael Townsend, Shane Johnson, Brent Johnson, Adam Johnson; and seven great-grandchildren; and by her nieces: Kate Dahlstrom, Susan Tarras and Linda Tarras. She is sadly predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth Tarras, father Alfred Tarras, brothers: Alfred Tarras, John Tarras and Jim Tarras, and by her sister Bessie Dahlstrom. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1pm on Saturday February 9, 2013 at I.O.O.F Hall, 46008 Reece Avenue, Chilliwack BC.

(Dec. 25, 1940 - Jan. 22, 2013) Arnold Leland Kendrick went peacefully to be with his Lord on Tuesday, January KENDRICK 22, 2013. He was born in Timmons, Ontario on December 25, 1940. Survived by his wife Sharon Kendrick (Eccles - Lorrenzetto); and Peggy, the mother of their two children, Kevin White of White Rock and Coreen, of Pentiction; and three granddaughters; Auntie Pauline of 97 years of Winnipeg; sister Carolyn; and numerous cousins. There will be a celebration of life, Friday, February 15, 2013 at 7:00 pm, Tzeachten Hall, 45855 Promontory Road, Sardis, BC, (next to Save-On Foods). Desserts are welcomed. The memorial service will be held Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 11:00 am at Tzeachten Hall.
