EDUCATION FUNDING
Candidates say system broken Both NDP and B.C. Conservative candidates say the funding formula is not working JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
Candidates for the May 14 provincial election in Parksville Qualicum Beach say the $1.1 million budget shortfall facing the local school district points to larger challenges in both the funding of education and the global economy. B.C. Liberal party candidate Michelle Stilwell, reached by e-mail from Australia, said District 69’s challenges “run deeper than just education.” “There is global economic uncertainty and notwithstanding B.C. has done quite well in its economic performance during this time, there is still a concern,” Stilwell wrote. “This is why it’s so important for us to have a strong economy. A strong economy leads to more government ability to invest in things like education.” See FOLLOW-UP, page A6 SEEDY SATURDAY
Celebrate, swap

Eager gardeners lined up for half an hour Saturday morning outside the Civic Centre to get their hands on the best seeds on offer. The reason for the lineup was the popular seed swap event at the core of Seedy Saturday, an event held every spring to celebrate and promote gardening in the area. Organizer Sandy Glazier said the event was extremely busy, with gardeners snatching up their preferred varieties while they lasted. “The mornings are usually the busiest because that’s when the best seeds are at the seed swap,” she said. In all, more than 2,000 people perused the many booths both inside and outside the Civic Centre as they began to think seriously about what they plan to do in the upcoming spring planting season. This year, Glazier said, heritage varieties of squash, tomatoes and peas seemed to be the preferred favorites, along with borscht beets. Despite the crush, Glazier said gardeners seemed to find what they were looking for.

February is Toastmasters month and the local club is happy that the City of Parksville has officially recognized it. The international non-profit educational organization teaches public speaking through a worldwide network of clubs, including Arbutus Toastmasters in Parksville and others in the mid-Island. The programs help people develop skills in speaking, listening, giving feedback, enhancing leadership potential and promoting self-awareness and self-esteem. Founded in 1924, they have more than 280,000 members in 13,500-plus clubs in 116 countries and more than a quarter million people attend events every week. The first club outside the U.S. was here on Vancouver Island, in Victoria in 1935. There are now more than 5,000 members in 286 B.C. clubs. Earlier this month Arbutus Toastmasters held a successful Proclaim Your Vision Soapbox Open House giving people a chance to speak their New Years resolutions and declarations for the region. They were happy when Parksville mayor Chris Burger recently responded to their request and proclaimed Toastmasters Month in the city. For more information check http://arbutus.toastmastersclubs.org/ or drop in to their meetings every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.

HEALTH CENTRE
VIHA issues call for docs
Physicians have until February 15 to respond to VIHA’s call for Expressions of Interest JOHN HARDING
editor@pqbnews.com
The health authority has put out an official invite for doctors who want to be part of the new Oceanside Health Centre when it opens in Parksville this June. The Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) issued a news release Monday saying it “is looking for physician partners to join the multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers who will support better health and well-being for Oceanside residents.” Doctors have 11 days to respond to VIHA’s expressions of interest (EOI) call. VIHA said it is attempting through this EOI to “identify doctors who are interested in delivering urgent care in the Oceanside Health Centre (OHC) and for family physicians who are interested in locating practices within the facility.” VIHA spokesperson Suzanne Germain said Monday said the health authority has heard from some doctors informally about the possibilities at OHC. “We’ve had a number of physicians saying this is a model of service that totally interests them,” said Germain. “It isn’t the kind of job that will appeal to every physician.” Germain said any physician licensed to practise in B.C. is welcome to fill in the five pages of documents and submit their EOI. In VIHA’s news release Monday, Dr. Robert Burns, executive medical director, population and
community health, attempted to explain how this position is unque. “Physicians will play a key role in the delivery of wellness, prevention-focused health care services in the Oceanside Health Centre, working as part of a new, innovative team approach to care, where physicians partner with other health care providers such as nurse practitioners, registered nurses, therapists, mental health and addictions workers and home and community care staff,” said Burns. “This opportunity will appeal to physicians who are interested in new approaches to managing health and who like working as part of an interdisciplinary team.” The EOI is also seeking physicians interested in providing coverage for the OCH’s urgent care service, which will be open seven days a week, 15 hours a day to provide health care services — without an appointment being needed — to individuals with urgent, but non-emergency medical needs, said the release. Burns also said he knows people in this region have questions about the staffing of the OHC. “(VIHA) recognizes that area physicians and other members of the community have been interested in learning more about the model of physicians’ services in the Oceanside Health Centre for some time,” said Burns. “We are pleased to be moving forward with this recruitment process and to provide details around how the new model will integrate physician services.”

B.C. NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham was in Qualicum Beach on this weekend attending the Seedy Saturday event with local NDP candidate Barry Avis.
AGRICULTURE
A higher-priority promise NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
If the NDP forms the next government, the issue of food sustainability and the needs of agricultural producers will take a much higher profile, says Lana Popham. The NDP’s agriculture critic was on hand in Qualicum Beach on Saturday to give her views on what is needed to breath new life into the agricultural sector in the province. Noting that while she has been the agriculture critic since she was elected nearly four years ago, the governing Liberals have gone through four agriculture ministers in that time — a lack of continuity she said served to exacerbate the low priority given to agricultural issues in B.C. “I am in politics because of agriculture,” Popham said. “The relationships I have made with stakeholder groups — farmers, food security believers, restaurants, anyone connected with the food system MOUNTAIN BIKE HYBRID BMX NEW & USED
— took four years. I have dealt with four agriculture ministers in four years. There’s no possible way to know the agiculture ministry and get had around this file without putting in the time. The current government does not have a priority on agriculture. Even if there is no money in the budget to support it, at least they could have kept the same person in for four years for consistency.” Her plan to revitalize the sector, she said, comes in three parts. “Step one is Grow B.C.,” she said. “That includes everything we need to do to support the farmer on the Agricultural Land Reserve. We protected it, and now it’s time to incent the farmer to grow on it. We need to make sure the land in the ALR is the land that’s supposed to be there. The Agricultural Land Commission needs to look at what land should and shouldn’t be in and make sure the boundaries are absolute so, they don’t use their

whole budget to deal with applications to exclude land from the ALR.” As well, she said, the government needs to look at meat regulations to make sure they work for all producers, not just the large-scale operators. “The second part of the three-step plan is called Feed B.C.,” Popham said. “It looks at the money we spend in our institutions when we re buying food. It would require hospitals, educational institutions, ferries … anywhere we use provincial dollars to buy food that 30 per cent to be grown in B.C.” Popham stressed the move would not amount to an agricultural subsidy, as the government would have been paying for the food anyway. Finally, she said, the NDP would reinstate the popular Buy B.C. program, which she said was one of the most widely-recognized branding systems going before it was abolished by the current government.

It’s no easy task to raise a cow in an apartment building and Kim Wilson doesn’t expect anyone to do it. But just because a young person doesn’t live in a rural area doesn’t mean they can’t get involved with the local 4-H Club. “Our program is great for both rural and urban kids, she said. “You don’t need to have an animal project to be involved in 4-H. Besides what one would expect with
horses, sheep, rabbits, goats, poultry and cattle, young people from between the ages of six and 21 years can take part in projects such as photography, small engine repair and sewing, among others. Regardless of what kind of project each young person opts to undertake, she said, they all get something very similar out of it. “The motto is to learn by doing, she said. “All the meetings are run by the kids. The adults are just there for advice or to answer any questions they might
have. The leadership and organizational skills they learn under such a system, she said, goes beyond the agricultural community and can last a lifetime. The program, Wilson said, is just starting for the year but she stressed people can join at any time. Meetings are held at the fairgrounds in Coombs, with each club having a different meeting time. For more information about 4-H, phone the Parksville Qualicum 4-H Community Club at 250-757-8501.

Besides the seed swap, Seedy Saturday saw the Civic Centre crammed with seed vendors, beekeepers and other gardening-related merchants. This year’s Seedy Saturday included
talks by Linda Gilkeson on new pests and diseases, Gord Hutchings on Bumble Bees of B.C. and the Yukon, and Kathy Claxton, with From Plant Pots to Crock Pots.
As well, the Vancouver Island Regional Library had a wide variety of books on hand on subjects on pollination, permaculture and seed saving.
Follow-up funding not there — Coupland CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1
NDP candidate Barry Avis said the formula for school funding is not working. “The funding model that’s in place right now is not proper and that needs to be addressed, said Avis. The former Qualicum beach town councillor also said the “last thing he would like to see is any schools closing, but “everything else is up for review, including layoffs. “Good management means you review all options, said Avis. “They (the
District 69 board of trustees) have a real task on their hands. It’s their responsibility to look at everything. Stilwell also said the issue of education funding “requires new, innovative and collaborative approaches while taking into account the things that have worked or failed in the past. B.C. Conservative Party candidate David Coupland said the other school district in this constituency has faced similar budgetary challenges in the last few years. Coup-
land’s son was in high school in District 68 last year. “Millions and millions of dollars (in the budget) and they had to share math books, said Coupland. “It’s kinda bizarre. Coupland said increases negotiated through bargaining agreements put pressure on local school districts. “They (the provincial government) negotiate something and then they don’t follow it up with the funding, he said.

Film crew ‘were disgusted’ Did a collection to raise money for a cleanup of the site NEIL HORNER

Megan Olsen has received an unexpected financial assist in her efforts to clean up the big pile of trash at the foot of Little Mountain. The Errington resident said this week she was contacted by an area resident after the story appeared in The NEWS, who offered to write a cheque for $750 to go towards the cost of a cleanup. The money, she was told, was collected when a film crew made a movie, entitled Wrecked, at the site three years ago. Although they did some
cleanup, Olsen said, the crew was able to shoot around the mountain of trash. However, the actors and others working on the project weren’t happy with what they found at the site. “The film crew thought the site was beautiful but they were disgusted with what people had done with the dumping, Olsen said. “The crew put some funds together to help with any future cleanup. It’s not a huge amount but it can be regarded as seed money. The neighbor who passed on the funds requested to remain anonymous.

Neighbors aid police in arrest Alert neighbors are being praised by police after a Port Alberni man pleaded guilty to one count of theft over $500 and one count of possession of stolen property in B.C. Provincial Court in Nanaimo. Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman said police received a report of a stolen vehicle in Qualicum Beach on Jan. 21. “A neighbor had witnessed someone taking the minivan and immediately called the car owner as they thought
something was suspicious, he said. “A description was sent to officers on patrol and moments later one of those officers spotted the white minvan in Parksville. The driver sped away from police and abandoned the vehicle. However, his evasive actions didn’t suffice to make a getaway and he was apprehended quickly after police flooded the area and a police dog was called in and followed the suspect’s scent directly back to the abandoned vehi-

Dale Crossley calls herself a Tomato-a-holic. She just can’t get enough of them. It’s not quantity she’s after really though, it’s variety — a variety you just can’t get from a store. That’s one of the reasons the Coombs resident is a member of a cross-Canada network of gardeners that has banded together for the past 27 years to save heritage seed varieties. Seeds of Diversity, she said, enlists people growing heritage varieties of plants
in a common pool, allowing them to experiment with, for instance, some of the more than 200 varieties of tomatoes that can be grown in this country. It’s not just tomatoes of course. The Seeds of Diversity catalogue that is produced each year contains heritage varieties of just about any edible produce you could imagine. “We have a huge seed bank, where you can look at the catalogue from member growers all across Canada and if you want a certain type you can order seeds for a two
bucks,” she said. The money is just a token.” Crossley was on hand with a booth promoting her group at the Seedy Saturday event in Qualicum Beach. She was there because she said saving heritage food varieties is important. “The food doesn’t taste as good as it once did,” she said. “For myself, I like to pick a tomato right out of the greenhouse and I love trying new stuff, the more colour it has the better.” For more information about Seeds of Diversity, visit www.seeds.ca.

A sad reality
S
ometimes it seems we humans don’t even deserve to live on this planet. We’re not talking about carbon emissions or global warming or pipelines or oil spills or coal mines or anything that big. Those issues develop a life of their own and get hijacked by special interest groups — it’s often difficult to separate the rhetoric from fact, the wheat from the agenda-driven chaff. There are, however, simple things we can do — or avoid — to show we at least have some respect for our planet and for the surroundings we enjoy snd the public spaces we have created in Parksville Qualicum Beach. For starters, how about the many responsible young people in our region explain to the few idiots of their age group that doing doughnuts on the grass of a public park is not cool. We don’t think we are going out on a limb here to suggest the criminals who tore up the turf this weekend in Parksville Community Park were not likely over the age of 60. Even the ads for erectile dysfunction don’t go that far. Parksville’s parks superintendent suggested those who do this wreck-the-grass-in-your-vehicle stuff need serious help of the psychological variety. He was speaking with a hint of anger as we looked at the turf, and we don’t blame him. However, peer pressure can be way more effective than counselling, so we challenge the young people of our region to put up signs in the high schools discouraging this behaviour. They are creative people who can come up with a slogan or something that explains this really isn’t fun or respectful of the planet and their fellow residents. A letter writer today explained how his recent walk by the sea was ruined by finding a dead sea bird with some kind of plastic washer around its neck. Sad stuff. It’s much tougher to spot the offender in this case, and it may just be something that innocently fell off a boat. But it is a good reminder about how our actions, or inaction, can result in the death of an animal or an ecosystem. Perhaps both these stories today can serve as a reminder to all of us to take better care of our surroundings. — Editorial by John Harding

QUOTABLE:
Letters I FEEL LIKE A LIAR
Last spring, after being frustrated by the amount of litter, I moved forward with organizing a Pitch-In clean up event for the community in which I resided in on the North Island. While soliciting funds and support from local businesses, making presentations to the town council and writing letters to the local paper, I referenced my home community, Parksville/Qualicum, as an example of a community that cares and works together to reduce the litter and to keep the landscape clean. After reading the articles in The NEWS regarding Little Mountain and visiting the site myself last week, I am embarrassed and appalled at what is happening in our community. I feel like a liar. I applaud both Megan Oslen and Jamie Black, who, while having different views on how it should be done, have the same goal to eliminate the garbage that is piling up at the base of Little Mountain and to draw attention to the issue. I am concerned however, after hiking in and surveying the site, with the idea of untrained individuals walking in and around the debris in an attempt to remove it. It is on a very treacherous slope and there is so much of it, many items are large and heavy, someone is likely to get injured. As well, I wonder what is the point? If preventative and deterrent measures are not put in place to stop it from happening in the future, then why bother cleaning it? From my research, this is not the first time a clean-up rally has been organized; it has

been done a few times over the past 20 years, at a great expense each time. Before the women and their teams spend too much time and energy to move this huge pile of garbage, can the RDN, Ministry of Forests, Ministry of Transportation, City of Parksville not take measures to stop this dumping from continuing? While Little Mountain is a community gem with a beautiful look-out and hiking trails that should be enjoyed by all, it is obvious that we, people, are not responsible enough and as a community are abusing it. EGG-CELLENT POINT Is it ethical to eat eggs? In the world of laying chickens, 50 per cent of the eggs that hatch become laying hens. The other half are slaughtered as dayold chicks. Every laying bird, whether heritage or commercial, is hatched with a brother who’s life is more often than not, tossed in the trash. I feel that such a senseless disregard for life reflects very poorly on our society today. The male chicks could be utilized on the dinner table, thus giving their life value and meaning. This is why I eat heritage chicken. I feel life should be respected. I believe eating eggs without putting heritage chicken meat on our table is supporting the slaughter of cute little fuzzy baby chicks.
BUS AN ALTERNATIVE
I find it funny that we consider spending $22 million on getting the railway upgraded to run a train once a day up the Island, while at the same time Greyhound announces cutting services do to losing $14 million on operating the routes on Vancouver Island. Has anyone ever thought of just letting the rail line sit as it is for future use, instead of upgrading a useless train? Let’s think about purchasing three medium-sized buses for $100,000 each. This would bring the $22 million down to 21.7 million. Now, invest that money at a interest of three per cent — they should be able to get that amount — for a annual interest of $651,000. Run the busses three to four times between the city’s of Campbell — Nanaimo — Victoria. Now, let’s hire four drivers to do that at a annual salary of $50,000 each for a total of $200,000. Pay the commercial insurance for the buses, $100,000 a year. Let’s put in the fuel cost at $800 a day for a total of $292,000 a year. Throw in maintenance on the buses of $60,000 a year. That’s a total cost of total cost of of $652,000 a year — it would break even even if the service would be free. That would be money well spent and it would also create at least four jobs that are steady.

My wife found this poor bird on the beach whilst out walking. The thing around its neck looks like a plastic washer for a pipe. It’s a real shame that such a nice sea bird, or any bird for that matter, should die because someone could not be bothered to throw their garbage into a refuse bin. People: take your garbage with you or put it in the bins. Don’t let this happen to our wildlife. BOB JACOBS Parksville
BUY THE PROPERTY The City of Parksville has been given another chance to save the waterfront motel property owned by Bernie Walsh. This property should be acquired for the general public to enjoy. As Canada’s 150th birthday approaches, why don’t our city officials approach the federal government for funds to help purchase this property as a celebration of our nations birthday? If that isn’t possible, perhaps the provincial government could find some money to purchase it. After all, it would be far more long lasting than the $12 million they are spending for the Bollywood awards and benefit more British Columbians in the long run. STEVE ANDERSON Qualicum Beach
ALTERNATIVES NEEDED Re: Coveyors could do the job of trucks, The NEWS, Jan. 31. What I find to be of great value in Sid Mennie’s story is, here’s a man who has a lifetime of experience working for mining projects all over the world, and he’s trying to offer an alternative to the volume of coal trucks Raven coal is proposing. His comment that rang the loudest to me about the volume of trucks Raven coal has planned was that “there will be bodies all over the place.” His idea may seem far-fetched to most of us, but he made some very strong and very clear statements about Raven coals dangerous trucking proposal, based on a lifetime of mining experience. It’s high time Compliance Energy acknowledges, and comes up with alternatives too. STACEY GAIGA Port Alberni
RE: The NEWS article January 31, 2013 “Moving coal by conveyors” The recent rticle by editor John Harding “Moving coal by conveyors” was interesting to say the least. While Sid Mennie’s expertise makes a convincing argument that the technology exists to build such a conveyor system, my guess is the chances of Compliance Coal Corporation (CCC) ever adopting this method of transportation are between slim and none. Over the past three years, Compliance has shown no discernible interest in funding the needed railway infrastructure for alternative methods of coal transportation, nor have they shown any interest in funding an additional commercial vehicle inspection station to monitor the significant increase in truck traffic along the proposed transportation corridor. In my opinion, the $120 million price tag attached to this conveyor system proposal makes this proposal a non-starter. I would like to mention that comments from the “couple of people” who were quoted in the article as saying their opposition to the Raven mine is about the mine itself and not the method of delivery of the coal, aren’t indicative of the thousands of people who have expressed concern or opposition to the Raven Coal Mine project. Speaking for CoalWatch Comox Valley, I can assure you that we’re concerned about all aspects of the proposed project, be it issues about the mine site, which by the way is west of Buckley Bay and not east as indicated in the article; the transportation issues, or issues surrounding the proposed port in Port Alberni. Finally, I totally agree with Mennie’s comments that the negative impacts on public safety from the proposed Raven Coal Mine Project are, to say the least, dire. JOHN SNYDER PRESIDENT, COALWATCH COMOX VALLEY SOCIETY Fanny Bay
I’LL PAY IT FORWARD You saved me during the last snow storm somewhere on the hump. Then you drove me out of your way to my home. I pray that you read this and know how truly thankful I am. You wouldn’t let me pay it back, so I shall pay it forward. LORNA KRONLUND Parksville

writer@pqbnews.com
The Parksville Public Library invites the public to a reading by renown author May Q. Wong from her new book on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Her new book A Cowherd in Paradise details the account of the remarkable lives of Wong Guey Dang (1902-1983) and Jiang Tew Thloo (1911-2002) and is getting a lot of high-level praise. The famous Canadian author of the book, Red China Blues, Jan Wong called it “Required reading for anyone who cares about citizenship and human rights. “A Cowherd in Paradise manages the writerly task of evoking the perilous, impoverished life of peasants in pre-revolutionary China while
delving deep into the psyche of an immigrant to Canada during the period of discriminatory head taxes, said Jan Wong. Married for over half a century, the couple was forced to live apart for twenty-five years because of Canada’s immigration laws. In China, Ah Thloo struggled through natural disasters, wars and revolutions; while in Canada, Ah Dang overcame discrimination to become a successful Montreal restaurateur. Set against China’s turbulent century, A Cowherd in Paradise is called a moving tale of one couple’s search for love, family and forgiveness. Check brindleandglass.com for more on the book. The free reading is Feb. 23 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Parksville Library at 100 Jensen Ave. E. Parksville. YOUR GUIDE TO VALENTINES DAY IN PARKSVILLE QUALICUM BEACH
Music, dining and all sorts of romance Many options to enjoy some time with your sweetheart BRENDA GOUGH
News Contributor
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, love is definitely in the air and if you are looking for some ideas to impress your sweetheart there are many options in the Parksville Qualicum Beach region. Flowers, a fancy dinner and chocolates are always appreciated but there are other, non-traditional ways to show your love. Sheila Abbott of Sexessories in Parksville advises both men and women to step outside of their chocolate box and make this year’s Valentine’s Day sizzle with some sensuality. Abbott said her romance shop is bursting at the seams with all kinds of gifts for the occasion including some great new edible products. She is particularly excited about the soy-based candles that can be melted into warm silky massage oil for the skin and can then be licked and enjoyed. Abbott said she has a wide variety of gifts and toys for women and men that are both naughty and nice, including a stuffed teddy bear holding massage oil and a feather boa. Another popular gift idea she suggests is a game for couples and she has some new games on the shelves including Entice Him and Entice Her, a series she said was voted game of the year last year. Abbott celebrated her ninth anniversary in business back in November and she admitted that people in the community are a lot more relaxed about her shop once they step inside and see that the store has a romantic rather than an intimidating atmosphere. “People are pleasantly surprised when they come in and the feedback I get on the store is constantly a source of pride for me.” If music is what makes your heart sing the weekend before Valentine’s has some tantalizing musical options to sweeten up your honey. Love Songs and Sweets at The Old
BRENDA GOUGH PHOTO
Sheila Abbott of Sexessories in Parksville has some great gift ideas for men and women to make Valentine’s Day sizzle this year.
School House in Qualicum Beach includes a cabaret style evening on February 9 beginning at 7 p.m. It will feature vocalist Miranda Sage and includes a dessert buffet. Phone 250-752-6133 for tickets. The Vancouver Island Symphony is performing at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre on February 9. A Valentine’s Special with tenor Ken Lavigne and conductor Pierre Simard begins at 7:30 p.m. and according to Lavigne it will be an evening inspired by the universal language of love. “I’ll be singing a lot of romantic tenor love songs through the ages — love songs with a symphony orchestra — definitely stirring. There will be romance from around the world — French, Italian, German, Scottish . . . and of course there will be surprises,” he hinted.
When it comes to Valentine’s Day, the tenor who is a popular charmer and storyteller agreed the evening will be a great way to celebrate all things cupid. “I think Valentine’s Day is one of those days that strikes terror in men to be ultra romantic. You can only give so many cards and chocolates. If you want to be creative, don’t give your loved one things . . . give them an experience, like this concert.” Tickets for the VIS performance are available at Mulberry Bush Books in Parksville and Qualicum Beach. For a lively romantic rendezvous on the day of Valentine’s, get your tickets for opening night of HMS Pinafore at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. Echo Players opens its production of one of the most beloved comic operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan on February 14.
Producer Sue Murguly said because it is so romantic it is the perfect time of year to put on the production and she claimed the light hearted musical is guaranteed to take you on a musical romp. Jam packed full of declarations of love the story takes place aboard a British naval ship anchored at Portsmouth. Memorable characters and music populate the romantic satire of the British social class system and naval hierarchy and Murguly agreed the production will be a great way to spread the love. “The songs are stunning and the costumes will be spectacular,” she assured. On opening night a special gift will be given to all of the ladies in the audience by the cast. See MORE, page A23
DANCE
A fusion of the popular and traditional
Two very different dance styles comes together for an evening of modern entertainment at the Port Theatre this Saturday. RUBBERBANDance is the result of a hip hop dancer and a ballerina co-creating a new style of artistic expression. Victor Quijada draws on the roots of
urban dance to extract the spontaneity, while classically trained ballerina Anne Plamondon incorporates structured technique into the group’s contemporary choreography. These very different styles fused together are causing an international buzz among dance watchers.
Catch the show Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The name RUBBERBANDance was inspired by the ever flexible Mr. Quijada’s break dancing nickname. He was not only interested in the different ways of moving, but the varied personal experiences he had
while dancing. Quijada’s sense of invention has pleased critics and viewers around the world. The fusion of the popular and traditional makes it available to a younger generation who welcome a deconstructionist point
of view. Mr. Quijada, carrying within him the sensibility of a street dancer, often explores ways to bring the immediacy of spontaneous Hip Hop circles to the frame of compositional display.

Beautiful expression CONTINUED FROM PAGE A14
He constantly tests the boundaries of dance by performing at alternative venues, carrying out impromptu performances, and even “breaking the fourth wall” between audience members and the dance group. The juxtaposition of the two genres makes for a beautiful artistic expression. With boldness and frankness, Quijada’s choreography combines the spirit of violence, tenderness, comedy and dra-
ma, to highlight some truth about the human condition. Dance students may also appreciate the special postshow question and answer period with some of the dancers. Tickets are $40, Port Theatre Members and Groups $35, Students $15, eyeGO $5. Call 250-754-8550 for tickets or visit 125 Front Street. Tickets can also be purchased on-line at www.porttheatre.com. —Submitted by Sarah Kalcsics

Children attending BLT’s Mad Matter Tea Party at Arrowview Elementary School Thursday go on a bit of a treasure hunt through the school.
A tea party at Arrowview Elementary School Thursday was all bright, with oversized hats, giant cards, funny costumes and a big white rabbit. That’s because it was a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, a celebration of Building Learning Together’s (BLT) Mother Goose Goes to School Program, now back after the holidays in schools around the district. The program stopped in for a party at each of the elementary schools in the district last week. Young children got to do a little tour of the schools, collecting pieces for their own funny hats in locations around the schools. Mother Goose Goes to School is a free educational program for young children (under 6) and their parents, guardians and caregivers, allowing them a bonding experience filled with rhymes, songs and storytelling. Kids get to interact with other children, participate in interactive activities, and can get school library cards for their own take-home reading. The program helps young children and their parents and guardians get to know their neighbourhood school and also helps with transitioning young children to the school experience, among other educational benefits. Check out the BLT website for a list of school and times at www.sd69.bc.ca/programs/BLT/ Programs/MotherGooseGoestoSchool.

Scrapbooking lessons and adventures Parksville’s Jennifer Edwardson excited about the many angles of scrapbooking LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
Jennifer Edwardson was always the crafty-type, so when she was presented with the idea to put together a scrapbook for her baby, passion took over. “I was given a scrapbook to do for her first year and that was it, said the owner and founder of Scrapbookin’‚ Adventures in Parksville. Not only has Edwardson always been keen on crafting things out of nothing and working with her photos, she was obsessed with crafting tools as a child. “I was one of those kids that bought school supplies in July and then looked at them every day until school went back in, she said. After graduating from Ballenas Secondary School, Edwardson moved to Alberta for about five years before moving back to the area. She had a successful career in fashion retail, but said her ideal career choice didn’t really hit her until TIF XBT Now, beyond working at her Parksville store, she also designs projects for three of the major scrapbooking manufacturers in the U.S. They send her their new products, she creates something beautiful, and then they use it for marketing.
LISSA ALEXANDER PHOTO
Jennifer Edwardson of Scrapbookin’ Adventures in Parksville shows some of the store’s Valentines Day products.
She’s also in demand for scrapbooking lessons, teaching regularly on the mainland and sometimes in the U.S. Scrapbookin’ Adventures has found their niche, Edwardson explained, so in-
stead of having a little bit of everything, they offer all the top releases from the major manufacturers, including patterned paper and all of the coordinating stickers and embellishments to create
pages. Besides that they have the top basic scrapbooking tools, adhesive brands and albums, and keep up on all the latest trends, she said. The classroom in the store is a popular place for all sorts of classes and workshops, including traditional layout, mini albums, youth classes, bridal showers and everything in between. Edwardson said at Scrapbookin’ Adventures they encourage people to get their handwriting, personal thoughts and memories in the books. Although there are many online stores that will make your scrapbooks for you these days, Edwardson said crafting your own is for those that want to get creative and make something very personal for their family or friends. “You have to be someone that wants to touch the paper and feel it and work XJUI JU u TIF TBJE i'PS UIPTF PG VT UIBU are scrapbookers and are creative, that’s part of the process, we’re creating these memories for our family and for our children. 7JTJU UIF TUPSF BU & *TMBOE )XZ in Parksville or check out the website for more information: www.scrapbookinadventures.ca. Thrifty’s pumpkins help hospital
Food stores donate a dollar to hospital foundation for every gourd sold in October AUREN RUVINSKY
writer@pqbnews.com
Every October, Parksville Thrifty Foods joins its sister stores and donates a dollar from the sale of every pumpkin to the local hospital foundation. “We love to take any opportunity we get to support charitable organizations,” said Parksville store manager Doug Riederer. The local store recently joined the Long Wood Station, Brooks Landing and Port Place Mall locations in Nanaimo donating a total of $4,138 to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation. The Parksville store contributed $1,427, which will go toward the purchase of medical equipment at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) which is the community hospital for the central Island and the referral hospital for all communities north of the Malahat.
The foundation raises funds for specific projects and supports the purchase of equipment upgrades and replacements. Dan Zapotichny, Thrifty Foods manager at Long Wood Station said, “It is with our customers’ help that this donation is possible. We give because everyone uses the hospital, if we can help make it an even better place, with better equipment we will. I cannot think of a greater target for our donation.” Brenda Rositano, of the foundation noted, “This donation means that customers have generated more than $42,000 in pumpkin proceeds alone. Not only does Thrifty Foods help our hospital, but they help every hospital, in every region they do business. This dedication is very appreciated by not-for-profit organizations and the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is extremely grateful for this ongoing support.”

PARKSVILLE CURLING
B.C. curling championships are here Provincial bonspiel starts Wednesday morning JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
“Everything’s in place and we’re ready to go.” The 16 teams that will make up this year’s Canadian Direct Insurance B.C. Mens Curling Championship are settled in by now and no doubt the butterflies have started to kick in as they prepare for the start of the big annual showdown, being played out at Parksville Curling Club for the second straight year. “There’s always some nerves, it’s always nice to get the first couple rocks thrown,” confirmed event chair Penny Shantz, a high level curler herself, adding the teams “should be totally prepared at this point. They know the ice maker, they know the rocks, so they know there won’t be any surprises there, as a curler you’re just hoping to have the best week of your life and earn that berth in the Brier.” The B.C. Mens kicks off Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremonies slated for 6:30 p.m. (prior to the final draw of the day). There will be three draws daily with the semifinals slated for Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) and the finals on Sunday in a 5 p.m. start. Only the winner moves on to the Canadian championship. Shantz adds the curlers don’t hit the ice looking to win it all -- “you start looking to make a playoff spot, and that’s a separate championship in itself when you get down to those final four teams.” Kelowna skip Jim Cotter is back with a new third to defend the title he won here last year, in fact the top three teams from last year will be back. There will be three teams from Victoria representing Vancouver Island, “as well as a few new teams, and there’s a few teams have mixed it up too... it’s a good field,” said Shantz. JAMES CLARKE PHOTO Admission is $5 a draw, or $40 for a full event pass Defending champion Kelowna skip Jim Cotter is back with a new third to defend the BC Men’s title he won here with tickets available at the door. last year.
VIJHL HOCKEY
Generals bounce back from loss to win JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
It was the tale of two markedly different games on the weekend, as Oceanside’s Save-On-Foods Generals bounced back from Friday’s 6-0 loss in Comox with a 5-0 win in Parksville Saturday in VIJHL action. “It’s a completely different game tonight,” Oceanside Generals Jr. Hockey Club president and governor Sylvain Giroux confirmed from the end glass Saturday. “Totally different game,” Generals’ head coach and GM Brent Demerais agreed after the final buzzer. On Friday Comox outshout Oceanside 17-4 in the final frame and 46-27 on the night. The Yetis led that one 2-0 after the first period, and 3-0 after the
second. The Generals were 0-for-3 on the power play, Comox 2-for-3. Oceanside starter Kiefer Giroux made a season-high 40 saves in a losing cause. “We just didn’t capitalize on our chances in that game,” said Demerais, pointing out “we had three breakaways, a goal post and we lost a couple players early in the game due to fisticuffs, they aren’t the ones that should be fighting because we need them in the game. Someone else should have stepped up.” Travis Flug was gone for fighting 2:02 into that one and Taylor Gray was given the gate midway through the second. Back at ‘the Place for the final regular season meeting between the two teams, Giroux stopped all 28 shots he faced, posted the shutout and named the games’ first star in what was his last
game with the Generals. The young puckstopper has just been signed to play Jr. A in Texas of all places (see Thursday’s edition of The NEWS for the full story on that). In Saturday’s game the Glacier Kings carried the play in the first half of the opening frame but a couple big stops by their goalie sparked the Gens who started taking it to the visitors. Jesse Ursic and Taylor Gray tallied for two goals in two minutes midway through the period for a 2-0 Oceanside lead at the first intermission. Cam McCarrick and Michael Fretz scored the only two goals of the second period, also at the midway point and also two minutes apart. Joe Chase scored the lone goal of the third 2:29 in, and Giroux and the
Generals locked down the win. Chase and Ursic were second and third stars. Gray also chipped in with two helpers for a four point night. Oceanside out shot Comox by period and 31-28 on the night. “We came out and we played 55 minutes of hockey,” Demerais said when asked what the biggest difference was on Saturday. “The guys were working hard, and it was a team win for sure. I thought our passing was really crisp, especially in the neutral zone,” he told The NEWS. “It was huge — a great bounce-back game for us,” said Demerais. “It really restored the confidence in our guys, and I’m sure the fans enjoyed it as well.” See STELLAR, page A34

Triple threat QMA’S James Reinhardt, Alex Niel and Katrina Illingworth were all smiles as they squeezed onto the top of the podium in Powell River.
Martial arts success Qualicum students big in Powell River tournement JAMES CL ARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
Qualicum Martial Arts’ sensei’s Rainer Todsen and Eileen Hanuse took three students to Powell River on Sun., Jan. 20 to compete in a tournament hosted by the Canadian Martial Arts Academy. According to Hanuse, the host school practises Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate and Okinawan Tesshinkan Weapons “as do we. Representing QMA were James Reinhardt and Alex Niel, both 16 and both black belts, and brown belt Katrina Illingworth, 14. In the end, Niel garnered gold medals in Team Kata and Weapons Kata, and took home a silver medal in Individual Kata
Reinhardt also picked up gold in Team Kata, to go along with bronze medals in both Weapons Kata and Individual Kata. Not to be outdone, Illingworth earned herself gold in Team Kata, gold in Weapons and silver in Individual. The trio marked the moment with gold medal smiles as they all squeezed onto the podium. “It’s awesome — they’ve been doing it for so long, surmised proud sensei Hanuse, and explained “we are a small school, and our main focus is not on competing, but it is great for the students to have a broader view of the Martial Arts occasionally.

UPPER ISLAND STORM
U15 girls storm through Juan de Fuca Vancouver Island Premier League team has two games remaining JAMES CL ARKE
Also earning props for her play was right middy Grace Gates. The win lifts the Storm to 5-6-3 and into second place in the fiveteam high performance league, while last place JDF is still looking for their first win of the season. The Storm, made up of girls from Nanaimo and Oceanside, were coming off a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the league-leading 7-5-1 Saanich Fusion in Victoria the week before. “Very good second half for us,” said Stefanek, adding “we controlled the game. We had some good chances, we just couldn’t finish in the first half.” The Storm have two league games remaining. Cup play gets
sports@pqbnews.com
The Upper Island Storm had to be resilient on Saturday, carrying the play and trimming Juan de Fuca 1-0 in Vancouver Island Premier League U15 Girls soccer action at QB Rec Fields. The two high performance teams played to a scoreless first half, and industrious centre-mid Amelia Kazanowski notched what would prove to be the winner 10 minutes into the second when she sliced through two defenders at midfield, broke in alone and tucked it in over a charging keeper. “It was a nice goal. She’s a good player,” Storm coach Larry Stefanek said of his captain. RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

As for his puck-stopper, “Kiefer turned in a stellar performance in both games I tell ‘ya,” he said, and pointed to the wild scramble in front of the net in the dying minutes of Saturday’s game in which the local hockey product showed some great acrobatics to secure the shutout. Both teams have four regular season games remaining — the split puts Oceanside at 19-22-2; four points back of Comox (2120-2) for second in the North division. play the final two games with only three players, as second Colin Mantik had a slip in the A final and was seriously injured and could not play the rest of the event. There were three local teams in the mix: Marshall and his rink — third Greg Roberts, second Tristan Jack and lead Mike Hamilton — finished seventh overall and lost to last years champion Don Burrus from the Burnaby Fire Department in an extra end Saturday morning. “All of the visiting firefighters commented on how great this year’s event was with many of the long time firefighters commenting that this event reminded them of the way it was 25 years ago with all the volunteer support helping to make it a great event,” a bushed but pleased Marshall said after, pointing out “there were well over 40 volunteers at the curling club throughout the weekend including the host committee spouses, members of the curling club who helped out in the lounge, with the scoreboards, cooking

breakfast every morning for the players, setting up the hall for the banquet and ice technician Eric O’Reilly and some of his staff who also volunteered their time. There were also well over 25 volunteer shuttle drivers who provided a service for more than 14 hours a day to get the players between the Qualicum & District Curling Club and the host hotel, the Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort & Conference Centre. Many of these drivers were off duty or retired paramedics, volunteer firefighters, curling club members, town employees “and other volunteers from our community who offered to assist in our hosting this prestigious event. “Without the support from our generous sponsors and volunteers, this event would not have been as successful as it was,” said Marshall, adding: “It’s a huge event for the community and they want us to host it again.” ICE CHIPS In 1980 a record 81 teams showed up in Kelowna for the BCFCC’s.

The 55th annual B.C. Firefighters Curling Championships are in the can, and the Qualicum and District Curling Club certainly delivered in their first time ever hosting the big event. “It was a lot of hard work that paid off, as it was a hugely successful championship,” confirmed Don Marshall, Oceanside Firefighters Curling Association president and event chair. The championship, which featured 25 teams of career and volunteer firefighters from big cities and small towns all across B.C., with a new entry this year from Port Hardy, was hosted by the Oceanside Firefighters Curling Association, “a group of local volunteer firefighters who have curled in this event for the past four years and wanted to bring the event to their home curling club.” A lot of curling to be sure, there were nine draws a day for two days starting last Thursday with the playoffs Saturday, as such there was plenty of great curling to be had for the spectators that turned out and in the end, Brad Clarke, a retired Battalion Chief with the Saanich Fire Dept. and his rink hung on to win the title for the 11th and final time — this is the last year his team intends on curling together — and as such will be representing BC at the Canadian Firefighters Curling Championship in St. John, New Brunswick, March 22-31. According to Marshall, the Clarke rink had gone through undefeated through the A Event, and being a double knock-out competition (featuring 10-end games instead of the usual eight enders), they had to be beaten twice by the Al Heath Rink from Burnaby. The Heath team beat the Clarke rink handily in the first game, setting the table for a ‘winner take all’ final on Saturday. “The game was back and forth in a very well-played game with Marshall having to make a tough shot on the last rock of the 10th end to win the championship 7-6,” said Marshall, adding the Clarke rink was forced to
