Boundary change leaves Chilliwack intact Alina Konevski The Progress

After nearly a year of debate, Chilliwack is most likely to remain as one federal electoral riding, the government confirmed on Monday when it released the “almost final” results of its boundary review. “I’m very happy that the commission heard the people of Chilliwack who indicated very strongly to me, and to the commission directly, that they wished to see Chilliwack remain united in one riding,” says Mark Strahl, MP for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon. The proposed Chilliwack-Hope riding would cover a fraction of the land of the current Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon riding, but would keep Chilliwack united. The riding’s new 92,734 population size would include areas south of Highway 1 such as Garrison Crossing, which were previously at risk of being lopped off and joined to Abbotsford. Most of the current Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon riding’s land would form a new Mission-Matsqui–Fraser Canyon riding, and absorb many communities north of the Fraser River, all the way from Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs, to Ashcroft. Pemberton, meanwhile, would join a new West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country riding, tying the town to nearby Whistler. MPs now have a chance to comment on the report at the House of Commons. “It’s my understanding, based on past redistribution exercises, that the maps don’t change an awful lot,” says Strahl. The final boundaries will be confirmed before the provincial election. Chilliwack parents voice support for striking BCGEU workers Robert Freeman The Progress

Chilliwack parents contacted by The Progress supported Wednesday’s job action by BC Government Employees Union despite the disruption to child care. Lauren Haggerty said she was “disappointed” when she heard that Chilliwack had been targeted for the one-day strike at Chilliwack Community Ser vices, but through Facebook she was able to contact other parents and make alternate arrange-

ments. “We can find something to do for one day,” she said. Haggerty and several other parents took their children to the ‘Go Bananas’ inside playground. “It doesn’t seem to be a major impact on me,” said Keiron Wheeler. Parents had nothing but praise for the staff and the Family Place program. “It’s important for routine and interaction with other kids,” Sarah Merrick said. The Chilliwack job action af fected the Chilliwack

Society for Community Living and Chilliwack Community Services where 232 BCGEU members are employed. None of the Chilliwack parents interviewed felt they knew the issues behind the job action, but all supported a wage increase. BCGEU’s community ser vices chairperson Patsy Harmston said starting wages are $15 an hour, “a dollar less than 10 years ago.” “Many of us have had to take on second jobs or are having to leave the work we love,” she said.

The union with 27,000 members is asking for a 3.5 per cent wage increase in the first year of a new contract, and a cost of living increase in the second. But the B.C. government is holding to its zero wage increase mandate to help balance the provincial budget. Local teachers reject 10-year plan Alina Konevski The Progress

The BC Teachers’ Federation has ratified a framework agreement with the BC Public School Employers’ Association on this year’s schedule of collective bargaining. This came just days after the government proposed its own bargaining framework, which would lock B.C. teachers into a 10-year collective agreement. The ratified agreement does not tie teachers into 10 years, instead only structuring the bargaining timetable ahead of the

May 2013 provincial election. “It’s a good framework to start with this year, and one that both parties (BCPSEA and BCTF) are happy with,” said Chilliwack Teachers’ Association president Clint Johnston. He said doesn’t see the need for putting another framework overtop. The government argues its proposed contract would institute a “labour peace” and ensure that students currently enrolled in Grade 2 would graduate from high school without interruption. The proposal suggests indexing public school teacher sala-

ries to those of some other public sector employees in the province, and allocating $100 million toward a Priority Education Investment Fund. It also lays out a strict annual bargaining schedule, with many key dates falling in the summer. One major sticking point for the Chilliwack Teachers’ Association is the proposed new fund, which is meant to address class size and compensation, all while removing these issues from the bargaining table. “We have fought long and hard, and honestly at great expense to our own members

in the courts, and we have won back the right to bargain our working conditions, to bargain class size and compensation issues,” said Johnston. “(The provincial government) is now going to take that from the bargaining table and put it to a policy table.” Premier Christy Clark released the proposed 10-year framework with no real consultation with the teachers’ unions, and just weeks before political parties start campaigning for the election.

Street trees plan puts practice into policy Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

Many Chilliwack residents are fond the ornamental plum trees that blossom into a riot of pink every spring. They value the aesthetic beauty and derive a certain identity from them. More than 600 of those plum trees were planted for Expo ‘86 and they marked the first bold

step toward a street tree initiative by the city, said Dave Snider, manager of parks in his staff report to council. Some of those mature trees are now reaching their end of life and need to be replaced. Council voted last Tuesday to entrench the current practice around replacing urban trees into a formal Street Tree Management policy. The street tree maintenance

program costs about $95,000 every year, said Dave Snider, manager of parks in his staff report to council. It does not cover services of a professional arborist. Street trees add so much and a science-based argument can also be made for the many benefits of the 8,000 street trees in Chilliwack. They filter air, provide oxygen and shade. They sequester carbon, shade cars

and soften unpleasant views, according to the council presentation. “Studies have shown street trees even make pedestrians walk slower,” he said. Trees can slow vehicle traffic because of friction when they are planted near the road, and they can increase home values because of the visuals. Continued: Trees/ p4

A tip of the hat

Last week, for the first time in my 23 years as a reporter at The Progress, I hugged a politician. I liked it. But I must quickly add that the hug-ee was B.C. Premier Christy Clark. She was in town to talk at a womenonly luncheon, and in a media interview before the event, an interview that dealt mainly with the differences between men and women voters, she told an anecdote about shaking hands with female executives and entrepreneurs in the lineup at an earlier all-women event. Suddenly, one of the women asked her, “Do you hug?” “Of course I do,” the Premier replied, whereupon everybody in the lineup wanted a hug. “Men would never do that,” Clark said. The media interview over, Clark was shaking Robert hands all around, and Freeman when it came my turn I asked her, as a joke, “Do you hug?” And she did! I’m sure the reason behind the hug was my impending retirement, not a blatant attempt to influence my story. But Chilliwack is a great news town. Which makes me wonder, what the hell am I doing retiring? The truth of the matter is, journalism is a young man’s game, and, frankly, the old adrenalin rush of reporting the news just isn’t there for me anymore. And I might do harm to innocent bystanders if I have to face another deadline. But I can honestly tell you, I was never bored, not for a moment, in those 23 years, and for that I owe this community. Because there is always something happening in Chilliwack, something going on for a reporter to sink his (or her) teeth into. I’ve learned a lot about people, and the craft of reporting: there are no boring stories, just boring reporters. It’s been my privilege as a reporter to hobnob with the likes of Prime Ministers and Premiers, mayors and MLAs, the notorious and the newsmakers of the day. But it was the ordinary people caught in the vortex of breaking news, those who stood up on principle for the benefit of others, who impressed me most. Chilliwack is full of courageous people like that. So, as I leave The Progress, it is with great respect that I tip my hat to all of you. Oh, one last thing. I don’t want to see any politicians lined up outside The Progress expecting an equal-time hug. It ain’t gonna happen.

But Snider said the intent was actually to formalize current city practice into policy. Coun. Stewar t McLean wanted to know if other areas were in line to get new street trees in downtown Chilliwack, and was told most of the budget would be dealing with tree damage. However concept plans are being developed for expanding the street trees down Spadina Avenue. Council approved the recommendation to reaffirm its commitment to the street tree program, remove and replace trees as they reach end of life and as funding permits, and have staff prepare a Street Tree Management Policy to cover inventory, inspection, maintenance, removal and replacement of trees.

Workshop takes on invasive aquatic plants Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

It’s time to bring the best scientific minds to the problem of invasive aquatic plants — namely Eurasian milfoil. The aquatic weed has become a huge problem at Cultus Lake in Chilliwack — and in lakes and rivers across North America. The long-term answer isn’t as simple as yanking the plant out by the root balls. It grows so quickly and so thick it can get in the way of swimming, waterskiing, and boating. It can choke out native species and interfere with fish habitat. “It’s a challenge that’s been vexing us for so long. It was time to bring the best minds to look at how it’s managed,” said Marion Robinson, chair of Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewardship Strategy. A workshop using video conferencing with experts on water quality and Eurasian Watermilfoil in Cultus and Nicola Lakes is set for Feb. 15 in the Aboriginal Centre on

the Chilliwack campus of UFV. The workshop runs all day 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a traditional lunch provided. It’s organized and hosted by The Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewards (CLASS), facilitated by the Fraser Basin Council, and other partners. Management ideas about the plant have changed over the years. The biology and physiology of this plant have enabled it to spread and dominate in a wide variety of habitats, including the ability to develop stem fragments and its canopy-forming growth form.

“There may be a different way to tackle the milfoil,” Robinson said. “It’s about managing it and managing it scientifically. “But there is no silver bullet.” The exper ts will be assessing the science of how the plant spreads and sharing experiments with controlling and managing it in other regions. “Local stewardship groups, agencies and government have had invasive aquatics on the agenda for more than five years,” Robinson said. Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is known to be a widespread issue. Recent questions

have come for ward best practices, hence this workshop. “The agencies, consist of many networks that we hope to bring together regarding lakes and invasives,” she added. They include Cultus Lake Aquatic Stewards, a network of 60 individuals, agencies, nonprofit organizations, and four orders of government (first nations, regional, provincial, federal). Two armed robberies, possibly committed by the same man, were reported in Chilliwack on Sunday. The first took place at about 2 p.m. just outside the Young Street Market on Young Road and Lewis Street. Bike lane for Boundary Road Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

A bike lane is being added to part of Boundary Road on the western edge of Chilliwack to encourage more cycling. An 800-metre bike way will be built on the east side of Boundary, from Yarrow Central Road to No. 3 Road. It’s part of the Bike BC program and the province is chipping in $26,323 for the Boundary Road Shoulder Bike Way project in Chilliwack. “This funding will both promote and increase healthy living in our community,” said Chilliwack MLA John Les. The new section complements the existing bike lane on the west side of Boundary, “encouraging cyclists to ride on the correct side of the road,” according to the press release.

One last deadline Integrity is a lofty word in the world of journalism. But it’s one that fits Robert Freeman like a well-worn coat. After 23 years with the Chilliwack Progress, Freeman retires Thursday. He began his career pulling newspaper clippings from the morgue for staff reporters at the Pacific Press library. The ink that stained his hands soon sank into his veins, and once there, a career in journalism was the only remedy. Twenty-three years in any industry is a long time, but Freeman has never lost the enthusiasm that first infected him. It wasn’t just the thrill of the chase, but the desire to get it right – to give readers the credit to make up their own minds on complex issues once both sides had been presented. For that he has earned the confidence of a public that all too often sees journalism as an agenda-driven pursuit. He’s also gained the trust of the people he’s covered – the

politicians and the pundits, the neighbours and the store clerks, the cops and even the criminals. They’ve come to appreciate his fairness, his frankness, and his ability to put people at ease, either on the phone or faceto-face. He’d ask the tough questions, but record the answers fairly and honestly. Freeman’s the first to admit he’s made mistakes – Greg none of us in this KNILL business are free of that. But he saw each as a lesson that has helped him do his job better – to tell stories and reveal a world that some of us might otherwise have never noticed. “Isn’t this fun?” he would ask suddenly, breaking the tension of a newsroom nearing deadline. New season for ‘School Wars’ in the province VICTORIA – Like a bad reality show about a dysfunctional family, B.C. School Wars has lurched to life again for the 2013 election. Coming soon to billboards and buses across the province: staged pictures of sad-faced kids crammed into dirty classrooms by a heartless government. It doesn’t even matter which government. This ritual combat went on through Social Credit and NDP governments too. Premier Christy Clark opened the new season with her promised pitch to restructure bargaining. It suggested splitting up bargaining into traditional wage and benefit talks, and a separate table and fund for classroom size and support. Cast in her familiar role of the sullen, rebellious teenager, BCTF president Susan Lambert staged a news conference to distort and mock the government’s offer.

A 10-year deal if we give up bargaining wages and classroom conditions? “Ludicrous.” What’s ludicrous is her characterization of a formula to link teacher pay to nurses, post-secondar y faculty and other government workers. Nurses are renowned for getting raises when Tom no one else does, FLETCHER so this should be an opportunity for these power ful unions to co-ordinate. But the BCTF can’t get along with other unions any more than it can negotiate with any discernible competence. Lambert falsely claimed there was no consultation on the proposal. This reminded me how she low-balled the costs of her

union’s demands by hundreds of millions during what passed for negotiations in last year’s strike season. Behind the scenes, the BCTF executive and the school district bargaining agent had just settled on a mutual costing model. What this means is the school districts, which have to make payroll and balance budgets, have convinced the BCTF to stop misrepresenting costs. I’ll believe that when I see it. Before Education Minister Don McRae had even spoken, BCTF vice-president Glen Hansman was growling his reply on Twitter: See you in court. That message presumably also goes for premier-in-waiting Adrian Dix, unless he replaces the hated B.C. Liberals in May, then quickly kneels before the BCTF and extends the key to the provincial treasury.

Two generations of British Columbians have been bullied by this bad drama, since Bill Vander Zalm decided an industrial union bargaining structure was just the ticket for public schools. Students are taught by example, if not by blatant propaganda in classrooms, that all problems are solved by demanding more money from the government. After this conditioning, older students are sometimes pressed into service as union pickets. There’s your Social Justice class, kids. Sorry about those sports teams and field trips, but we need those as bargaining chips to get more paid leave time. To state the obvious, Clark and McRae staged this as a preelection event to frame the issue. They knew their effort would be greeted as a declaration of war. with a wage freeze last year? It wasn’t the blindingly obvious fact that every other public sector union had already taken two zeroes. It was strictly tactics. The delay sets up the latest rematch of these old warriors in the spring election. The plan is to get the dreaded B.C. Liberals out and then start working over the weaker, more union-dependent NDP. That’s who caved in earlier and gave the BCTF broad control over staffing levels, the proverbial key to the treasury. Along with basic math and economics, a point the BCTF seems unable to grasp is that its strategy is self-defeating. Those sad kids are making more and more parents seek a better deal. Film industry deserves support I wish everyone would read the well written column by Margaret Evans about the film industry in the Tuesday Chilliwack Progress, January 29, to understand what a important industry this is to B.C. The industry employs over 25,000 people in B.C. and with about 90 per cent now not work-

ing, you would think the leader of our province would be a little more concerned. I know budgets are tight, but do we really need all those ads with premier Christy Clark telling us how well we are doing to the tune of $15 million to produce those ads?

Let’s have a smoke-free outdoors

As National NonSmoking Week winds up, the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, is continuing to encourage the B.C. government – and all political parties – to support smoke-free public outdoor spaces including the patios of hospitality establishments, and where children play, such as parks, playgrounds and beaches. Since we started talking about smoke-free public places, we’ve heard from people on both sides of the

fence. Some feel it is their personal right to smoke where they want and that provincial regulations would be going too far. But the vast majority view smoking restrictions as an important public health measure to protect us all from involuntary exposure. This is a valuable debate and one that we are proud to have sparked. Debates aside, the facts reveal that tobacco use in our society is taking a staggering toll. Tobacco use remains

the largest single preventable cause of death and disease in B.C., killing more than 6,000 British Columbians each year. Second-hand smoke is linked to the death of up to 140 BC residents each year. Currently the provincial government is deferring to municipalities to decide whether or not to ban smoking in outdoor public places. However, at the 2012 Union of B.C. Municipalities Convention in September, munici-

palities spoke loud and clear by asking the province to introduce province-wide restrictions. The society encourages all British Columbians to encourage your MLA, and the B.C. Health Minister, to follow the lead of 30 B.C.municipalities and four other provinces, and keep B.C. beautiful and smoke-free. Panel broadens aboriginal discussion On the heels of the polemical religion and politics panel discussion in December, ChilliwackHope MLA Gwen O’Mahony is hosting another charged panel Monday night, entitled “Building the 8th Fire.” With the goal of deepening conversation between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people, the event was planned months before the Idle No More movement took root, says O’Mahony, and “now is an absolutely perfect time to be having this discussion.” Panel speakers will touch on the same themes as Idle No More, including aboriginal rights, legislative changes, and the relationship between First Nations people and the rest of Canada. The diverse panelist table consists of Soowahlie First Nation’s Chief Otis Jasper, UFV professor Wenona Victor, University of Victoria doctoral student Robyn Heaslip, and Gerard Peters, senior manager of the In-SCHUCK-ch Nation. O’Mahony hopes to draw a varied group to the free and open event, which will be held on Monday 6:30pm at the University of the Fraser Valley’s Aboriginal Gathering Place in Canada Education Park (Room A 1457, 45190 Caen Ave., Chilliwack). She recommends watching the CBC “8th Fire” series, available online at cbc.ca, as a backgrounder.

Serious security flaws uncovered in B.C.’s criminal justice computer system could have let gangsters hack into a gold mine of sensitive information they could use to intimidate witnesses or otherwise thwart prosecutions. The weaknesses in the JUSTIN case-tracking database were made public Jan. 24 by Auditor General John Doyle after a delay of several weeks at the province’s request to

Grizzly gunner commits to Cascades Moving on

As Chiefs players continually show, not all wins happen on the ice, writes Jacob Bestebroer

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball program is adding more Chilliwack talent to the mix, with GW Graham’s Kaitlyn McDonald committing for next season. McDonald has been tearing apart AA high school girls opposition this year, using her lethal three point shot to post several 40 point performances. Cascade coach Al Tuchscherer says she is arguably the best shooter in the province. “Kaitlyn might be the best shooter to come out of the province in the past two or three years. She is dynamite,” Tuchscher told the Abbotsford News. “I saw her play the other day, and she knocked down 12 threes. She is routinely hitting seven, eight, nine, 10 threes in a game.” The Grade 12 hit the recruiting radar in a big way recently, and Tuchscherer had to work hard to land her. “She was somewhat under the radar in terms of recruiting,

playing for the Junior Cascades in the summer,” he said. “But in the past couple months, she’s been heavily, heavily recruited. It got into a pretty fierce war once coaches saw her play.” McDonald is sharp academically, earning honours five years running. She is the sixth GW Graham student-athlete to commit to a post-secondary school in either the CIS or CCAA, and the first female to be recruited by a top 10

CIS school. “We are very excited for Kaitlyn and the oppor tunity coach Tuchscherer is giving her at UFV,” said Jake Mouritzen, the athletic director at GWG. “It is a great accomplishment for her and one that she has earned through her own hard work and dedication to the game and her academics,” added GWG senior girls head coach Sarah Mouritzen. The program McDonald joins is having a fantastic season.

At 13-3, they sit first in the Pacific division of the Canada West conference. They ranked fourth nationally, and spent two weeks in top spot earlier this year. The core of the Cascades is Chilliwack natives, with Sarah and Nicole Wierks joined by Kayli Sartori, Courtney Bartel and Alexa McCarthy. In McDonald, Tuchscherer sees shades of former Cascade star Carmella Silvestri, a key player for the Cascades dur-

ing their final years in the CCAA and as they made their transition to Canada West. “We think that Kaitlyn is a player who can contribute immediately to our program but we are also keeping an eye on the future as we graduate five seniors in 2014,” he said. “We think Kaitlyn will have a big role, along with current younger kids, to really take our program to great places.” Get information on UFV athletics at ufv.ca/ athletics.

Spartan swimmers earn spending money

Chilliwack’s Spartan Swim Club sent four swimmers to the University of British Columbia Dash for Cash Meet, held Jan. 26.

Grayson Bukkos, Jessie Gibson, Carson Olafson and Colton Peterson made the trip, competing against 150 top swimmers from around the province. With some cash up for grabs, 14-yearold Gibson earned first place finishes in the 100 metre fly and 200m fly and freestyle. She added second place showings in the 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke and a

third in the 100m backstroke. Those efforts earned Gibson $140. Peterson matched her earninings in the boys 15-and-over division. Peterson snagged $140 with first place finishes in the 100 and 200m breaststrokes. He placed second in the 400m individual medley, third in the 100m individual medley and sixth in the 200m backstroke.

Olafson earned $40 in the same division with a second in the 100m backstroke, third in the 200m backstroke and fourth in both the 200 and 400m freestyles. He finished fifth in the 200m fly. ● Olympic medalist and former Spartan swimmer Brent Hayden was in town last weekend, dropping by the Leisure Landing Centre. A new banner was raised to commemorate his bronze medal win in the 100m freestyle at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. Hayden ate cake, signed autographs and mingled with more than 50 Spartan swimmers and coaches.

After watching the Chiefs struggle to a 5-1 loss to Salmon Arm at Prospera Centre last Saturday, my thought was that the first part of my weekly column would have a negative tone. If you were there you will know that there wasn’t much positive to pick out for the Chiefs. Then I realized that doing so would be allowing myself to fall into a far too common media pattern after the team you follow suffers a loss, and I didn’t want to do that. If you’ve ever listened to the Vancouver Canucks radio station after they lose you’ll know what I mean. From the moment they lose till the drop of the puck for their next game, media and fans beat that loss to death. For some reason we forget that passing judgement on the incredibly small sample size of one game is idiotic. The Chiefs didn’t play well Saturday. For me that’s really the end of the story. If the next few games go the same way then we may have something legitimate to discuss but for now, I’m forgetting about it and moving on. So while I won’t pass judgement on the Chiefs performance Saturday night I will on their actions since then. On Sunday, the Chiefs held their second annual Pasta D’Puck dinner at Frankie’s Bar and Grill. Once again the event sold out two seatings. Chiefs players were there performing serving duties. Everyone had a great time. On Monday, two

French speaking Chiefs, Ben Masella and Alex PerronFontaine, volunteered (and not for the first time) to spend time with students in the French Immersion program at Sardis elementary school. The feedback received from students, and from teacher Michelle Savich, was overwhelmingly positive. On Tuesday night, several Chiefs played a game of floor hockey against Chilliwack’s Special Olympic floor hockey team at AD Rundle School. Have a look at the pictures on the Chiefs Facebook page and you will see how much fun everyone had. Chiefs players do an awesome job interacting with people in our community and they do so willingly. As Chiefs players continually show, not all wins happen on the ice. Moving on to this coming weekend. The Chiefs are in West Kelowna Friday night for what will be a very tough game. The Warriors are flying a little bit under the radar this season. Penticton leads the Interior Division again and most people expect they will be the team to beat come playoff time. But don’t count out the Warriors. They are big, play hard and can score goals. Saturday the Chiefs get a chance for revenge in Salmon Arm. The Silverbacks are not an overly-skilled team but their effort here Saturday was excellent. They are a hard working team with very good goaltending. jb@chilliwackchiefs.net

Pro leagues stocked with CJHL talent One hundred and 29 graduates of Canadian junior A hockey are skating in the National Hockey League this season, according to the CJHL. The NHL’s Vancouver Canucks are the biggest employer of junior A grads, with eight on the roster. That includes new

D-man Jason Garrison, formerly of the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers. “For me, it was just developing as a player and as a person,” Garrison said. “On the hockey side of things, it was good because it was really competitive. If you weren’t performing, you weren’t playing.”

Aaron Volpatti spent parts of three seasons with the Vernon Vipers, and Andrew Ebbett played 60 games for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Mason Raymond played for the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks. The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have five CJHLers apiece,

and 560 CJHL grads are skating in North American pro leagues. The American Hockey League has 191 and the East Coast and Central leagues have 248 between them. An additional 295 CJHL grads have moved on to major junior hockey.

United falls in all-Chilliwack match Chilliwack’s U-12 United Select soccer girls dropped a 4-3 decision to their cross-town rivals on a rain-soaked pitch Sunday. United played a strong first half, getting strong offensive push from Grace Vandenbrink, Miranda Coombes and Kassidy Nienhuis. Sydney Dombowsky and Katie Lampen scored goals to put them up 2-0. Goalie Abigail Vandop made some big saves, supported by defenders Amber Feaver, Madison Steele, Kalista Kirkness and Grace MacIsaac. But the tables turned in the second half, with United surrendering four unanswered goals. A late strike by Kennedy Galley off a Lampen corner kick made for a nail-biter finish, but United couldn’t net the equalizer.

Emily June Oâ€™Connell passed away on December 7, 2012 in Surrey, BC at age 19 years. Emily was born on March 18, 1993 at Womenâ€™s & Childrenâ€™s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Emily is survived by her two year old daughter Hannah Lyne; mother, Terry; father Troy; brother Tyler; grandmothers, Bev and June; and Tylerâ€™s fiancĂŠ Holly. Rita Dolores Kovich (nee Porter) passed away on January 26, 2013 at Chilliwack, BC at age 81 years. KOVICH She was born March 5, 1931 in Oxbow, Saskatchewan. Rita is survived by her children: Bev Kovich, Wayne Kovich, Janice (Sol) Martins, Heather (Joe) Rieder, Rodney (Sandi) Kovich and Donald Kovich; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; siblings: Lois Stinn, Lloyd (Sonya) Porter and Elizabeth (Ted) Howe. She was predeceased by John, her husband of 40 years; her siblings: Keith Porter, Phyllis Payne, Ken Porter and her grandson, Seif Martins. Rita worked at the Royal Hotel in Chilliwack before marrying and raising six children with John. As the children grew, Rita moved on to work at the Saan Store for 25 years. A Memorial Service for Rita will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Chilliwack United Church, 45835 Spadina Ave. Chilliwack. The family wishes to express their deep thanks to Dr. Ken Hirst, the nursing and support staffs on 3-North at the Chilliwack General Hospital for all the care provided to Rita while she was there. Shirley McDonald (nee Evans) passed away at her home in Rosedale, BC after a lengthy strug- McDONALD gle with COPD. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 49 years, Frank McDonald and her brother Glen Evans. She is survived by her son, Robert (Cathy); grandchildren: Rhian and Duncan; daughter, Linda; sisters, Betty Evans and Hilda Ginther; brother, Jack Evans; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirleyâ€™s parents, Rev. David Evans and Hilda Evans Rudd instilled in her pride in her Welsh heritage. Deeply influenced by her formative years in Saskatchewan, she joined the CCF/NDP in the 1950s and remained actively involved in communities: BC PTA Council; 1976 UN Habitat Forum; Rosedale Athletic Club; Rosedale United Church. She will be remembered for her kindness to customers at the Rosedale Post Office. Her lively wit and keen intelligence stayed with her to the end (she scored the highest marks in English lit in SE Saskatchewan in high School). She will be deeply missed. At Shirleyâ€™s request, there is no service, although she would appreciate it if donations were made to the Canadian Lung Assn.

It is with great sorrow and extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, BLEKER uncle and best friend, Jim, on January 26, 2013 at The Cascades Hospice in Chilliwack, BC Left to mourn his passing are his sister, Sharon Rykens of Groningin, Holland; brother, Ernie (Donna) of Carvel, Alberta; his niece and nephews; great nieces and nephews; his best friend, Claude Meilleur; and many extended family and friends. Jim was born in Holland and moved to Canada with his family at a young age. He was a well respected and much loved teacher for many years, and once retired, he went on an adventure to New Mexico to teach the Navajo Indians, which he felt was an incredible experience. Jim was co-owner of The Chocolate Shoppe with his best friend, Claude, for many years, which he immensely enjoyed doing. He became known by all the children as â€œthe bald guyâ€? and was always missed when he was not there. He will be forever in our hearts and minds.
