Council considers borrowing $15 million KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Let the show begin, says city councillor Andy Adams as he kicks back in one of the new Tidemark Theatre seats. The brick fundraiser for the theatre’s 25th anniversary campaign was a huge hit and now theatre supporters are being asked to sponsor the seat replacement program for $500 a chair.
Sit back, relax, on a comfy seat with your name on it With the cash for the “nuts and bolts” and “bells and whistles” secure, it’s time to think about comfort, says Andy Adams. The veteran city councillor is an ardent supporter of the Tidemark Theatre and is doing his part for the theatre’s 25th anniversary campaign. It started with the Adams family buying a $100 brick to support the ambitious upgrade project,
and now they have sponsored one of the new theatre seats for $500. “The capital fundraising still needs to continue to meet the society’s goals and vision to make the Tidemark a first class facility,” he said. “I would like to thank all those who have already contributed, but ask for those who have bought a brick to consider moving up to a chair.”
The anniversary fundraiser set to raise more than $600,000 to upgrade the theatre’s lighting and online ticket buying, to buy a new projection system, and to replace all the old seats. The “T25 Campaign” has already secured its major funding partners with $250,000 from the city and $153,000 each from the Island Coastal Economic Trust and the Coast Sustainabil-
ity Trust. As well, public donations have brought in more than $95,000. The final touches are the new comfy seats. “Downtown revitalization has been a key component of my time on council. The plan contains five major water projects: a water intake system (part of BC Hydro’s John Hart upgrade); a water main renewal; a water booster pump station; a main chlorine facility upgrade; a Beaver Lodge reservoir expansion; as well as four sewer projects. “Projects are funded from water and sewer user fees, water and sewer accumulated surplus reserves, debt, grants and DCCs (development cost charges) specific to those utility funds,” said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. “The plan includes all requests for capital work for the five-year period, however, many of these projects are un-funded so staff has assumed debt/borrowing from MFA (Municipal Finance Authority).” Coun. Claire Moglove said the city can’t afford to put off these expensive projects any longer. “Water and sewer are the number one and two services,” Coun. Claire Moglove said. “You turn on the tap, you get water. “You flush the toilet, things go Continued on A3
