‘Positive change’ for Chilliwack vows NDP candidate MacAhonic Robert Freeman The Progress
Patti MacAhonic, former executive director of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce, won the NDP nomination for election candidate in the Chilliwack riding Saturday. “We are going to make a positive change in Chilliwack,” MacAhonic said, after the ballots were counted, and she was declared the winner over challenger Dennis Adamson. “We are going to have an NDP government,” MacAhonic vowed. “We’re going to work together and make that happen.” “This is NDP country,” BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix confidently told the crowd of about 200 gathered in the Rotary Hall Theatre at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Contact centre renovations finally underway Jennifer Feinberg The Progress
Renovations have finally started on the new Chilliwack Health and Housing Contact Centre on Young Road. The plan is to start providing supportive housing as well as health and social services to the community’s most vulnerable by the summer of 2013. “This project is an outcome of tenacious people,” said Lee anne Hanson, manager of the Chilliwack Health and Housing Contact Centre, at the Friday afternoon ground-breaking. Tenacity and collaboration were concepts that came up often in the speeches to explain how the unique state-of-the-art centre came to be. “Every one of you have made this possible,” said Hanson to the crowd huddled under a tent in the
parking lot of the construction site on Young Road. Chilliwack MLA John Les congratulated project partners on behalf of the premier and the provincial government. The province
through B.C. Housing kicked in the lion’s share, including $3.4 million for the building acquisition and renovations, plus $230,000 annually for the housing side of things.

The contact centre will be a “very important new component in our community,” added Les, “as we deal with people who for whatever reason have fallen out of the mainstream, and find themselves in very disadvantageous circumstances.” Mayor Sharon Gaetz was exuberant as she expressed to the crowd how happy she was this day had finally arrived, since everyone had been asking city officials when it would be done. “Well, it starts today!” she enthused. “I’m just so proud of our town for coming together on this,” Gaetz said. There was a time some people thought the contact centre plan had gone “off the rails,” at one point, but the partners administered “CPR,” and the project was back on track.

Mail box changes about safety: Canada Post Robert Freeman The Progress
Rural mail delivery in the Chilliwack area is not going to be suspended, both Canada Post and local postal union officials assured The Progress Friday. “What we’re tyring to do is make sure we can deliver the mail safely,” Anick Losier, Canada Post’s director of media relations in Ottawa, said Friday. “We never intended to suspend mail deliveries, regardless of what people may have thought,” she said. Peter Butcher, president of local 741 of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, agreed. “The mail is not going to be suspended,” he said Friday. But Canada Post would “love”
to see rural mail boxes replaced by the big community mail boxes, which don’t require as many delivery people, he said. “If we lose rural mail box delivery, we will lose jobs across the country,” he said. Ironically, it was a union member who invented a “reaching device” so that letter carriers in rural areas can avoid “ergonomic” injuries from leaning across the passenger seat in left-hand drive (LHD) vehicles to deliver the mail. The device would also eliminate the need for an “ergonomic assistant” to ride in the passenger seat to reach the mail box without injuries. Butcher said both the assistants and the right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are paid for by Canada Post. He also said relief
drivers are trained to drive RHD vehicles when the regular driver goes on vacation. Drivers are not allowed for safety reasons to get out of their vehicles to deliver the mail, he said. Losier said Canada Post is trying to ensure the safety of its employees across Canada, and it’s asking customers to help in that effort by making certain changes. She said it may sound “silly” to ask a customer to raise the height of a mailbox by two inches, but it can make all the difference in terms of ergonomics and preventing injuries from the repetitive action of delivering the mail to hundreds of rural mailboxes five days a week. “We all like our jobs, but (we) don’t want to be injured along the
way,” she said. Losier said an inspection of mailboxes in the Chilliwack area found that 450 did not meet safety guidelines, some being too low or leaning away from the street or located in areas “almost impossible” for drivers to park in safely. She said affected customers should call the number on the notice to reach a “one-on-one solution” to delivery issues. However, some residents complained about difficulty reaching the local Canada Post representative listed, and others felt threatened with suspension of mail delivery, if changes “demanded” by Canada Post were not made by a certain date. low an agreement reached earlier this month by Canada Post and CUPW to conduct an independent ergonomic study of the reaching device. In areas where the device is already in use, drivers are being asked to complete an opinion survey by Jan. 18 so a consulting firm can write a final report. Butcher said Chilliwack got 12 of the devices, and drivers with between 13-330 rural mailboxes were offered RHD vehicles or compensation for 2010 or newer LDH vehicles bought for the job. He agreed with the height requirement of mailboxes to avoid ergonomic injuries, but he said Canada Post’s timing of the rollout in winter was “questionable” given the frozen ground, especially in the Prairie provinces. rfreeman@theprogress.com

As Justice William Grist pronounced Jesse Blue West guilty of the first-degree murder of 14-yearold Chelsey Acorn, her mom let out a clap and a “Yes!” in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack on Monday morning. Family members supporting Lisa Acorn then cried and hugged one another in relief at the verdict which sees West, 60, receive an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years. Chelsey’s cousin, Stacey Laybolt, and her younger sister, Breanna, spoke on behalf of the family outside of the courthouse. “We’re very happy that justice has been served … We’re just glad that this monster’s off the street and he’s not going to do this to anybody else,” Laybolt said. Breanna said she wanted people to remember her sister as someone who was “vibrant, beautiful and just loved life.” Chelsey was reported missing from an Abbotsford foster home on June 10, 2005. Her remains were found April 8, 2006 in a shallow grave near the Carolin Mines exit off the Coquihalla Highway outside of Hope. She had been buried naked, and an autopsy determined that her skull had been crushed with a large rock sometime in the fall of 2005. West, a former long-haul trucker from Surrey, and his son, Dustin Moir, now 27, of Mission were charged with her murder in 2007. Both went on trial in November 2009, but West’s proceedings were severed from Moir’s two months

later. Moir, who had been in a relationship with Chelsey, was convicted in February 2010 and also received a life sentence. Both of their trials relied much on evidence gathered during a “Mr. Big” sting in which undercover police officers posed as members of a criminal organization that hired the pair, individually, to work for them. West and Moir were shown separately in undercover footage confessing to Chelsey’s murder in a meeting with the “crime boss.”

In West’s footage, he told the boss that he killed the teen because she was going to report to police that Moir had sexually assaulted her. He said the three drove to a wooded area, and he dug a deep hole while Chelsey and Moir went for a walk. When they returned, West said he approached Chelsey from behind and strangled her. The father and son then buried her in the hole, disposed of her clothes and threw into the nearby river the shovel used to dig the hole, West said.

He claimed that his son had killed Chelsey during an argument at a campground over her supposed pregnancy, and his only role was to bury her body. A 17-year-old Chilliwack girl was in stable condition Saturday after she was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of First Avenue and Charles Street in Chilliwack. Chilliwack RCMP said the driver of the vehicle, a 71-year-old Chilliwack woman, stopped and remained at the scene of the 6 p.m. accident until police arrived. The victim was airlifted to hospital suffering “serious” injuries, and was listed in stable condition, police said. A police investigation continues. Meanwhile, police are reminding pedestrians to be aware of their surrounding, to use the sidewalk if one is available, to always look both ways before crossing the street and to wear highly visible or light-coloured clothing when walking at night.

The mayor recalled the strategic plan that emerged from 75 stakeholder groups coming together in 2009 as part of a network of Chilliwack Healthier Communities. The aim was to find a way to deal with the social disintegration agencies were noting at street level downtown in an integrated way, with wrap-around services offered at one site. challenges we face in a modern society is homelessness. As we know, the cost to both individuals and society in general is very high,� Libbiter said. It’s therefore an area very “deserving of our collective attention.� “The evidence is clear that effective treatment of homeless people or those at risk requires comprehensive, integrated, and client-centred services, as well as stable and affordable housing,� added Libbiter. When the building upgrades are complete, the two-storey former hotel building will provide supportive apartments for 22 homeless people, or those at risk of being homeless. “There’s such a strong need for this project and great community support,� said Cynthia Admiraal, president of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board. She noted the broad level of community “buy-in� that it took to make the contact centre idea happen, and said her board was cognizant of it as well. The contact centre will be run by Pacific Community Resources Society (PCRS), at 8583 Young
Road, with a range of community support services delivered by both PCRS and Fraser Health. Project proponents, and funding partners included the B.C Government and B.C. Housing, as well as City of Chilliwack, PCRS, Fraser Health, the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. The City of Chilliwack chipped in $500,000 while PCRS will contribute $100,000 in equity toward the project. Women’s vote eyed in Chilliwack
BC tories look for candidates in ChilliwackHope riding The BC Conservatives are looking for more election candidate nominations in the Chilliwack-Hope riding. “At present, the constituency association’s candidate search committee has received one application and several expressions of interest from local members of the business and arts communities,” the association said in a Monday news release. Rosedale resident Michael Henshall has submitted his nomination package, the association said, “and is encouraging others to join him in signing up new members.” “He firmly believes that jobs and young people are leaving B.C. for greener pastures and is determined to reverse the trend,” the association said in the news release. Candidate nomination packages will be accepted until Jan. 31, and voting will take place at a Feb. 9 nomination meeting to elect a candidate in the Chilliwack-Hope riding. Those were the same words Dix used a little over a year ago when Gwen O’Mahony was nominated the NDP candidate in ChilliwackHope and went on to win an upset byelection victory, breaking the BC Liberals’ long hold on that riding. Dix said O’Mahony has made a significant contribution to the NDP caucus since becoming an MLA, and both she and MacAhonic will make “an extraordinary team” of candidates to carry the NDP banner in the next provincial election. “It’s going to be a satisfying day in May,” he said, when two NDP MLAs, both women, are elected in the two Chilliwack ridings. O’Mahony, now the NDP’s skills training critic, called on party members from both ridings to
work together to elect MacAhonic because her Chilliwack-Hope constituency office is “incredibly busy” answering calls from the Chilliwack riding. “I need the help,” she said. “”We need to get Patti MacAhonic elected.” As candidate, MacAhonic said her Job-One will be putting together a strong campaign committee as she takes on the challenge of winning the traditionally conservative riding. BC Liberals are hosting a “Women’s Dialogue with Premier Christy Clark” Thursday in Chilliwack. But outgoing Chilliwack MLA John Les says it doesn’t mean a battle is shaping up for the female vote in the riding, despite comments made by BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix at Saturday’s nomination meeting where Patti MacAhonic was elected candidate. “No, I don’t think so,” Les said, about a contest in Chilliwack for the female vote. “The Premier has been doing

The NHL is back in business. After five months of sportscasts that sounded more like business reports as owners and players argued their cases for the protracted labour dispute that kept arenas dark, teams returned to the ice for a truncated season that began on Saturday. Some teams are trying to make amends, to salve the wounds that three difficult lockouts in 19 years have wrought on ticketbuying fans. The Vancouver Canucks are cutting prices at their concessions and giving away the jerseys their players will wear in their home opener. The Edmonton Oilers held their first practice on a frozen pond, using Twitter and Facebook to alert fans. Canadians generally, and hockey fans in particular, are pretty forgiving. It’s likely the arenas in the NHL’s six Canadian cities will be just as full and noisy had the season been at its proper midway point. Those who can’t get a ticket, or afford one, will be tuned in to Hockey Night in Canada, a Saturday night TV tradition for more than 60 years. By the time the race for the Stanley Cup playoffs heats up in earnest, say in two weeks, most fans will probably have forgotten there was a lockout in the first place. Especially in Toronto. After all, their team might already have been out of it had the season started on schedule last October. It’s hard for the average working person to relate to a labour dispute between billionaire owners and employees who earn millions of dollars. There were never any picket lines set up outside those glittering arenas, many of them built with help from taxpayer money. Locked-out players never huddled around fire barrels to stay warm, worrying about how their strike pay will cover the rent. Perhaps both sides should pause and think about that the next time they threaten to put hockey on hold. ~ Black Press

Brave new world in education is a bit scary
Last week, CKNW host Bill Good interviewed Judith Adler, associate professor of sociology at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She told an anecdote in which she gave her second-year sociology students a basic geography test. It was really elementary. They had to identify the continents on a blank map of the world. The majority failed. Some circled South America when asked to circle Africa. Or they put the Canadian Arctic at the South Pole. Adler started out by asking students to identify countries (a bit more challenging), then simplified it by asking them to circle continents. How did the education system fail them so badly? I remember another test done with students in the U.S. They were asked to identify their own country on a blank world map. 20

per cent failed. Why? How can students graduate and be accepted into university yet lack such basic knowledge? When my kids were in school, world maps and globes were standard props in class. In our digital world when events are instantly reported, Margaret how can students not know where EVANS things are happening or where, geographically, those places are? Another little news item that surfaced last year also rattled educators. This was in the U.S. but there’s an underlining link here to the problem Adler (and apparently other professors across Canada) has encountered. Teachers in Indiana no longer
have to teach handwriting but can replace it with instruction in typing. In fact, Indiana joined a growing list of states focusing solely on digital education, sidelining handwriting in the process. In 2010, 44 states in the U.S. adopted a set of national curriculum guidelines (the Common Core State Standards) that emphasized teaching keyboard skills. It seems that teaching handwriting has tumbled down the priority list perhaps the same way that teaching elementar y geography has been squeezed by the pressure to teach other skills and knowledge. Why would you not teach something as essential as handwriting? How will students know how to sign their own names, fill in an application form or write a grocery list? OK, scratch the last one. Text-happy, thumb-centric teens and parents can tap that list into their iPhones.
The loss of the knowledge of handwriting will mean the loss of a fragment of culture. If our future world is only digital text, how will students not familiar with handwriting read historical documents? How will they understand the development of literature and communication? With the loss of handwriting will go a critical element in the process by which children learn. According to neuroscientists, handwriting is more important than the mere mechanics of being able to write. It connects students with the familiarity of letters, develops fine motor skills, and reinforces recognition and coordination. Handwriting helps their overall learning. An experiment was done with adults who were tasked with learning a foreign alphabet. One group learned the characters by hand and the other group learned them on a computer screen

using a keyboard. Weeks later, the group that learned by hand scored consistently better in recognition tests than the computer group. Brain scans showed that the hands-on group had a great deal more activity in the part of the brain controlling language comprehension, motor-related processes and gestures related to speech. Should we really be endorsing a world in which North American kids can’t read a map, can’t find where they live in the world, and don’t know how to sign their name? No matter how technological our world is, a thorough grounding in the basics of education should never be short-changed. Students need to understand the world they live in, their place in that world, and their ability to effectively communicate within it.

Farmed salmon claims challenged Re: Boycott sparks farmed fish debate in Chilliwack (The Progress, Tuesday January 15) Net-pen salmon farmers’ problem is not that the public have not seen the farms, but that we have not seen good faith from the industry. Yes “information about the health of our fish has been available to the public since 2003”, but characterizing annual reports as “specific” is misleading. On page 18, Vol. 3 of his report Justice
Cohen wrote “In the past, the public and non-government/ non-industry scientists have not been given access to the raw data in the fish health database.” ... “A salmon-farming industry representative told me that the public has never had access to the kind of information that was made available during this Inquiry.” Referencing Cohen’s report, Mr Warkentin claimed “no evidence [of] link between salmon farms and sockeye returns.” Yet
on page 25, Vol 3 Justice Cohen reported “In summary, I have concluded that net-pen salmon farming in the Discovery Islands poses a risk of serious harm to Fraser River sockeye through the transfer of diseases and pathogens.” Farmed salmon can never replace ecosystem benefits provided by wild B.C. salmon. Impatient motorists will only end in tragedy Sometime ago you published my letter outlining my concerns about people failing to stop for school buses. This morning my wife witnessed a ‘near miss’ where a driver almost killed a young lad who is in Grade 1 or 2. Does it need to result
in a death of a child before you start obeying the law? Is our RCMP addressing this situation? I have personally confronted some people who have ignored the school bus lights and will continue to do so. I will be taking pictures
of you and submitting them to the RCMP. I drop my daughter off every morning to catch a bus at the front of Prospera Centre and see people ignoring the lights every single day! People, please, please, please stop for the buses.
If you kill a child by failing to stop for a school bus I hope they charge you with manslaughter and throw you in jail. Will you only regret your decision to ignore school bus lights then? John Koopman

Fortunate to have home mail delivery Regarding the front page article from Thursday Jan 17 (Canada Post on hot seat for proposed changes to rural mail boxes). I live in Yarrow and we were informed from Canada Post in late summer to do the exact thing as they are asking on Chilliwack Central. We kind of ignored it
and then they sent a final notice of stopped service. I immediately changed my mailbox to their specifications and then when I contacted Canada Post they were extremely easy to deal with. It is not outrageous to think that the letter carriers should have a safe way to deliver your mail. In fact, we are fortunate to still
get mail service directly to our house. Most people have to go to a community mailbox. Yes the ground is frozen now but in your article it said the Canada Post has already backed off until the spring. I think Diane Paterson should suck it up and just fix the problem. No sympathy here. Norm Boehr
Teenagers want to have input Why is it that society gives teenagers so much responsibility yet so little credit? We are seen as angry, rude, inconvenient, an expense to the community, as well as incapable of making decisions. However, one day the community is going to be ours to take care of and live in. I believe that our municipal government
should be trying to reach out and teach us, as well as listen to what we have to say. If we are not educated about our community and what is happening in it, how can we bring about change for the better? Now, I know you may be thinking, their generation doesn’t care, they are privileged and entitled kids who don’t understand how to
make decisions. Well, that’s not entirely true; we have many innovative ideas that are not shaped by what has always been. One example of a way to teach us and hear our voices, would be to set up a system where we could vote. To make it successful, the votes couldn’t just be fake or the same as the “real” vote. The
idea would be to have us vote on things that make an impact on our lives at this moment. Without educating us and getting us as teenagers involved in the decisions of our community, how can you as community leaders expect, the community to prosper in the future? Molly Wright

Feel the buzz at C&G Electric Art Tattoos have long held the fascination of Craig Smith. Since he was 14 he’s loved the art form, and the technology used turn concepts of the mind into indelible artwork on the body. He’s been practising his profession for about five years. But in September he and friend Gary Dragomir – who shares his passion for the art – decided to open their own studio. And so was born C&G Electric Art Co. As an artist, Craig says he’s something of a free spirit who relishes the chance to spread his creative wings. Having his own studio gives him that freedom, he says. “I don’t think any artist wants to be held back.” When customers walk into the Spadina Avenue shop, there’s no doubt what business they’re walking into. But that’s the way the two friends like it. “We consider ourselves ‘tattoo geeks,’” Craig says with a laugh. Even when they’re not at work, they’re talking about ideas, exploring new images, drafting new concepts. The walls of the shop are decorated with designs – most of them form Craig’s own pen. The rest are from artists he knows and respects. That dedication helped earn C&G a loyal client base even before it opened in September. It’s a confidence Craig appreciates and works hard to maintain. He works with his customers, who bring him their ideas that he helps craft into reality. Many have come to trust his judgement, saying simply, “I have this empty space on my arm,” Craig says. A new group is striving to have a public art policy included in the City of Chilliwack’s Official Community Plan. Calling itself, There 4 Art, the ad hoc group has strong support from the local art community and members of the Chilliwack Visual Artists’ Association. “Having a public art policy adopted by the city would make it official,” said Sylvie Roussel-Janssens, a local artist and spokesperson for There 4 Art. “It would be a statement that they endorse the concept.” Public art, like the Piper Richardson statue in front of the Chilliwack Museum for example, can foster a sense of community and public pride. “It can create a sense of beauty in the city, a sense of being involved and caring about where we live,” she said. There 4 Art has met about four times so far, and they’re at the stage where

Roussel-Janssens has posted some images from sites around the world on the Facebook page, Life in the Wack, and has been getting some positive reactions. “We’re not there to reinvent the wheel. So many models already exist elsewhere in the province as to how to do this,” she said. Demand prompts call for Alzheimer volunteers

They’re two Chilliwack kids keen on helping those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Everett Rutter, 8, and Campbell Pitkethy, 10, have pledged to do all they possibly can to raise funds this month for the Alzheimer Society of BC. They were greeting shoppers at Cottonwood Mall last Friday night, sharing details about the Investors Group Indoor Walk for Memories from an information booth. This year the Walk for Memories is slated for Jan. 27 at the Landing Sports Centre in Chilliwack. Funds go to support research for a cure, as well as services and support. More than 70,000 British Columbians are dealing Alzheimer’s or dementia, and 10,000 of those people are under the age of 65. And there’s more to come, as baby boomers enter the golden years. “The more a family knows and learns about Alzheimer’s,

including children, the easier it is to dissipate the awkwardness, fear and stigma we find around the disease,” says Jillian Armit, of the area’s Alzheimer Society. The annual theme for the 2013 event is “I’m still me,” underlining that the person who is suffering is not their disease. The goal is eliminating the stigma that surrounds the condition. “There are some really incredible people coming to the forefront who are willing to talk about what they’re going through. The message is ‘I’m still me.’ That helps people understand that it’s all about maintaining quality of life.” Everett Rutter says he was inspired to get involved because of fundraising efforts
by his brother, Gavin, who was originally inspired by Campbell Pitkethy, 10. Everett’s campaign for this year is in honour of his greatgrandmother, Frances. “She’s kind of confused. She can talk, but not in full sentences,” he says. Everett is filmed on video talking about his dear relative and the plight of dementia on the website. “When I grow up I want to have a world without Alzheimer’s,” Everett says. In Campbell’s situation, her beloved Papa Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s when he was only 60 years old. This is her fourth year of fundraising for the Walk. She plans to show the video she made about the disease at an

upcoming school assembly in front of 600 kids. Campbell is hoping to raise an impressive total of $5,000, with the help of her schoolmates and a friend whose grandparent also struggles with Alzheimer’s. Since the 10-year-old loves to make healthy smoothies, when people donate to the cause, she offers recipes on her website for her favourite smoothies, which she calls “Brain Freezies.” Participants in the indoor Walk for Memories can sit, stand or stroll at the indoor event on Jan. 27 with registration starting at 1 p.m. The walk runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Landing Sports Centre. This year’s honoree, Vi Hoyt, and her family will be on-hand during the walk. Register at www.walkformeories.com. “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” – Sherry Anderson, Author This quote echoes the sentiment of the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C, especially in Chilliwack. Volunteers are a treasured resource that allow the Society to provide a range of free services for families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Volunteers help the Society with everything from making phone calls to caregivers to facilitating support groups. “They are absolutely invaluable to our team and are a big reason why we are able to meet the growing need for support and education for families living with dementia,” says Jillian Armit, the Society’s regional Support and Education Coordinator for Chilliwack and Hope. An estimated one in 11 B.C. residents over age 65 already live with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. And that number is projected to double over the next generation. With the need for assistance soaring, help from volunteers is critical for the non-profit. The need locally right now is for volunteers who can facilitate a local support group which meets each month. The group is based on the philosophy that people with similar issues are in a unique position to offer support to others on the same journey. The objective is to strengthen the coping abilities of caregivers and people with early symptoms of dementia, and reduce the impact of dementia on the community. The position has a few basic requirements: • Excellent listening and empathetic skills. • Knowledge of dementia or a willingness to learn. • Facilitation skills or a willingness to learn. • Formal or informal caregiving an asset. Training is provided, and a one-year commitment is required. “The work is very rewarding,” says Gail Johnson, who volunteers locally as a support group facilitator. “Volunteering has given me the feeling that I can do something very positive in the midst of the difficult journey of dementia. I often feel I get far more back in return than I give.” Caregivers who work with the volunteers can vouch for the positive impact on their lives. “It is very challenging to even know where to begin,” says Armande Klapprat, who provides care locally. “The Alzheimer Society not only opened doors for me, it gave me a new lease on life. I am no longer a lonely traveller but have connected with others with similar experiences and continue to learn on my journey”. The Trauma Stewardship Institute is committed to raising awareness and responding to the cumulative toll on those who are exposed to the suffering, hardship, crisis, or trauma of humans, living beings, or the planet itself. Our daily lives are filled with witnessing trauma and suffering. As a community member, front line worker, professional, or caregiver, do you find you: • are anxious or nervous for no apparent reason? • worry about things that have not happened? • have sleepless nights? • are drained by daily interactions? • avoid conversations due to fear? • feel overwhelmed? • forget or feel you don’t deserve to take care of yourself? Then this is a day you must experience! Laura van Dernoot Lipsky will offer a compelling mix of personal insight, cutting edge research, and humor to help us understand the cumulative toll of being exposed to suffering over time and gain concrete skills to reconcile it. When Pat Sears arrived in the parking lot of the Kent Harrison Search and Rescue base on Wednesday night, she wasn’t too surprised to see all the extra vehicles. After all, an email had circulated the week before that piqued her interest, urging all members to be at the meeting. A special item had been placed on the agenda — something none of them would want to miss. Sears also didn’t notice that her husband, John, had been acting funny all day and was hustling her out the door to be there on time. In fact, he had been anxious since the week before, forced to keep a secret from his wife of 37 years. He was one of a handful of people who knew that the meeting would focus on congratulating Sears for her dedication. But supporting his wife — a SAR member, an accomplished sailor, and a Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue coxswain — comes naturally to Sears, and so she didn’t suspect a thing. The realization that she was the person being honoured didn’t hit her until members of the RCM-SAR started filing into the base’s small meeting room, along with several of her close friends. “I had no idea whatsoever,” Sears said. They were there to award Sears with a Life Membership, an honour currently bestowed upon fewer than a dozen of the organization’s 1,400 volunteers. Sears became involved with the RCM-SAR in 1992, when it was known as the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. She was an active member until the couple moved to Harrison Mills about five years ago. But she kept up her membership, and last month someone nominated her for the Life Membership. It was an easy, unanimous decision for the organization, said Greg Miller, vice president of the RCM-SAR. He outlined a few highlights
of her career as a coxswain, or steersman, including a rescue in which 14 people were pitched into the water.

In the last 12 months, they report having saved 162 lives and assisted 718 people in total. Members interested in volunteering as RCMSAR crew must also have boating experience, be able to meet the physical conditions of long hours on the water in rough conditions, be willing to be on call for 24 hours at a time over a five-day period, and live within a 15 minute call-out range from a dock or marina. Sears was on a team that represented the Pacific Region in 2002 at the first International SAR competition in Quebec, Miller told the group, and her team won first place for all of North America. She was just as quick to tell everyone that Miller and Ryan Woodward (also in attendance) were also on that team. Being on the water, and volunteering with the RCM-SAR, is “definitely in her blood,” Miller added. It is that passion for the open sea that led her to volunteering in the first place. “I’d been boating for several years,” she said. “And joining was my way of putting back into the community.” She joined the KHSAR just a few months after moving here, and got involved with the Agassiz RCMP office as well. Being a local Search and Rescue member doesn’t keep her as busy as her work on the open water, but she does lend a hand when it’s needed, both on the boats and behind the scenes. Sgt. Stuart Falebrinza from the Agassiz RCMP detachment was also on hand to award Sears with a pin for her service to the RCMP. While she’s had to stop volunteering over the last year due to illness from cancer and subsequent treatment, she has been on recent

The Chilliwack Chiefs should be feeling a lot better about themselves after two weekend wins over a Mainland division foe. Harvey Smyl led his crew to Prince George for road games Friday and Saturday night. Both were 4-2 finals, leaving the Chiefs with an overall record of 26-12-1-1. Chilliwack regained first place in the Mainland division standings, with the Surrey Eagles (24-11-23) taking just one of a possible four points in a weekend home-andhome versus the West Kelowna Warriors. The Chiefs knocked the third place Spruce Kings nine points back at 19-14-1-6, and the good news doesn’t stop there. Friday night’s game marked the return of Josh Hansen, who missed the last eight games with a leg injury. Hansen was leading the Chiefs in goal scoring when he was sidelined (with 18), and Smyl is thrilled to get him back. “It just helps in so many different ways, adding depth and another offensive weapon,” Smyl said. “Josh is so huge for our penalty kill and so defensively responsible. And he’s so solid in the room as well.” Philip Zielonka opened the scoring Friday night, getting his 23rd of the year on a first period power play. Zielonka set up the second Chilliwack goal, scored by Graboski late in the second period. The Chiefs led 2-1 heading to the third and added the insurance marker at 15:10, with Brandon Volpe scoring his first BCHL goal. The McHaffie brothers, Spencer and Scott, drew the assists. Volpe’s tally proved tremendously important. PG’s Bryant Christian got the Spruce Kings within one at 17:13, setting up a frantic finish. But Austin Plevy’s empty netter with 11 ticks left wrapped up the win.
Zielonka earned another assist to cap off a three-point night, and goaltender Mitch Gillam stopped 46 of 48 shots to earn first star honours. “The power play opportunities were 9-3 or something like that, and we gave up two almost complete five-onthrees,” Smyl said. “So the shots in that game are probably correct. They did get shots, but we kept them mostly to the outside. And we’ll give up shots from the outside because we know Mitch will stop those.” The Zielonka show continued in Saturday night’s Chilliwack win, with the Quebec native collecting another two goals. Zielonka scored twice in the first period, with Plevy assisting on both. Hansen announced his return with a second period strike to put the Chiefs up 3-1 heading to the third. Again the insurance marker proved integral. PG’s Mark Begert scored at 15:04 to set up another nail-biting finish, but Luke Esposito sealed the deal with an empty netter. Gillam only had to stop 30 of 32 shots this time, with Chilliwack tightening up the defence. “We tried to do a couple different things to slow them (PG) down and I think we didn’t get our heart rate going in the first period,” Smyl said. “But Mitch settled everything down for us and we built off that. Our discipline was a lot better.” All in all, Smyl sounded a lot happier Monday morning than he has at any other time of late. Winning is great for a coach’s mood. “We did some things we did six or seven weeks ago, and judging by the weekend, I’m going to say yes,” Smyl said when asked if his team is almost back to mid-November form. “We’ve got everyone back in synch, doing what they do best. And adding Zielonka and Hansen does so much for our depth.” Smyl will have a

choice to make as Hansen gets back to game speed. Will he put the Chilliwack kid back with Plevy and Esposito on the top line, or keep Zielonka there. Zielonka has been good. Very good. “We knew what he was about and what he was capable of offensively. But we’ve used him in a lot situations, like the penalty kill, and he’s done a very good job of that too,” Smyl said. “Certainly he’s doing everything we expected of him, and more.” The Chiefs are now 5-0 against Prince George this season, with a combined 19 goals for and six against. That’s Good news as they face the Spruce Kings again Wednesday night. Back in the friendly confines of Prospera Centre, Smyl’s crew hopes to build off that weekend momentum. This weekend includes crucial home games against the Eagles (Friday) and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (Saturday).
Chilliwack back on CJHL list After slipping out of the national rankings last week, the Chilliwack Chiefs are back in the CJHL top 20 this week. Wins in four of their last five have the Chiefs slotting in at No. 15, the third highest ranked BCHL team. Victoria’s Grizzlies are
fourth on the list, two spots up from last week. They trail the Brooks Bandits (AJHL), Minnesota Wilderness (SIJHL) and Summerside Western Capitals (MHL). The Penticton Vees are No. 13, one spot down from last week.

Pilton resurrects hockey career A former Chilliwack Bruin has joined the blueline of the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies. Kade Pilton, a one-time second round pick of the relocated Western Hockey League club, had just about called it a career after leaving the Regina Pats early this season. The six-foot-five blueliner was traded from the Victoria Royals to Regina in the fall, but it didn’t work out. “After about a month in Regina I was moved up to forward in an energy role, and that worked for a bit,” Pilton told the Victoria News. “But eventually I just decided to move on. I wasn’t getting the minutes I
had hoped.” The Vancouver Island native’s return went relatively unnoticed, until Pilton’s social media status tipped off Grizzlies coach and general manager Bill Bestwick. The coach didn’t know for about nine days, and once he found out he immediately contacted Grizzlies cocoach Craig Didmon, who was on the Royals coaching staff last year. “A lot of (BCHL) teams were calling me and I’m appreciative of that. I gave it a lot of thought and I’m very happy with opportunity to come to a winning team here in Victoria,” Pilton said.
With a full season in the WHL, Pilton has waived his NCAA eligibility, but junior A could be what he needs to flesh out his game and develop into a solid WHLer for the 2013-14 season. “I haven’t put too much thought into going back to the WHL yet, just taking it one game at a time right now. Maybe the WHL to CIS (route) is still an option, or maybe I can go pro,” he said. Pilton played two games for the Bruins during the team’s final season in Chilliwack (2010-11). He played 43 last year for the Royals and 27 this year for the Pats.

Cascades stumble in Alberta
A season that has gone so right for the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team took a turn for the worse this weekend. The Cascades, the top-ranked CIS team in the nation, hit the road for two games in Alberta. On Friday night, UFV visited the University of Calgary for a showdown with the Dinos. The Cascades took their second loss of the year, falling 79-69 in overtime. UFV led by five points at halftime, but Calgary drew even midway through the third quarter. The lead changed hands several times, and the fourth quarter had a playoff atmosphere reminiscent of

The Cascades are asking local businesses to donate prizes for a silent auction, with all proceeds going to the CBCF. Saturday is the fifth annual Shoot for the Cure game. The UNBC Timber wolves are the opponent, and the game tips off at 5 p.m. at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades, ranked No. 1 in the nation, have raised over $5,000 over the course of four previous fundraising games, selling Shoot for the Cure T-shirts, CBCF pins, water bottles and ribbons. UFV’s double-overtime win over UBC last November. The Cascades ended up in OT for just the third time ever in a Canada West regular season game, and they couldn’t stop the hotshooting Dinos. Calgary went five-forfive from the field to pull away. “We didn’t match Calgary’s energy or determination tonight, and give them full credit for taking that game away from us,” said Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer. “We have a lot to learn about teams coming after us and rising to the occasion. I think we were all disappointed by our performance.” Chilliwack’s Kayli Sartori led UFV in scoring with 19 points. Chilliwack’s Sarah Wierks added 16 points, pulling down a teamhigh 15 rebounds. Mission’s Aieisha Luyken chipped in with nine points and five steals. Looking for a bounceback, the Cascades took on the Lethbridge
Pronghorns Saturday. Again they stumbled, falling 64-59. Lethbridge dominated the first and fourth quarters. UFV dominated the second and third. The Pronghorns came out flying, and held a five point lead after the first quarter. UFV turned up the defence in the second quarter, forcing 14 Lethbridge turnovers. The Cascades scored 20 points and had a five point lead at halftime. UFV continued the defensive dominance in the third quarter, but cold shooting prevented them from pulling away. UFV shot just 25 per cent from the field, and the lead was eight heading to the fourth quarter. With foul trouble forcing Luyken to the bench, the Pronghorns sensed an opening. Lethbridge chipped away, and had the game tied 49-49 will four minutes to go. Chilliwack’s Nicole Wierks drained a threepointer with just over
two minutes remaining to give her team a onepoint cushion. But Lethbridge pulled ahead and iced the game with a pair of last second free-throws. Luyken led UFV in scoring with 19 points and four assists. Sarah Wierks chipped in with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Nicole Wierks rounded finished with 14 points, pulling down seven rebounds. With the weekend losses, UFV (11-3) falls one game behind Regina and Calgary (122) for best record in the Canada West conference. There are now four teams within a game of each other in the Pacific division with Thompson Rivers at 11-3 and UBC and Victoria at 10-4. Four weekends remain in the regular season. Coach in trouble with cops Chilliwack Chiefs assistant coach Brandon Fleenor is at the center of an investigation by Victoria-area RCMP. The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Victoria Grizzlies defenceman Chris Albertini, and relates to a BCHL hockey game played on Jan. 12. The Chiefs played the Grizzlies that day at the Bear Mountain Arena. In the waning moments of a 2-1 loss, Albertini was standing between the Chilliwack and Victoria player benches. The 20-year-old Ontario native exchanged words with the Chilliwack bench, and Albertini told police Fleenor threw a hockey stick at him. Albertini said the stick hit him in the side of the head. Everything was caught on tape and later posted online by Grizzlies videographer Roy Anthonisen. The video has since been removed. RCMP spokesperson Kathy Rochlitz said no charges have been laid yet. She said a number of other people need to be interviewed before a decision can be made on whether or not to press charges. Both player benches erupted afterwards and the game ended in a brawl. The BCHL suspended Fleenor indefinitely for his role, and handed out additional suspensions to six Chiefs and six Grizzlies. Mathieu Tibbett, Jared Babych and David Thompson were given one game apiece. Tanner Cochrane was handed two games and Trevor Hills got the most severe punishment at four games. Chiefs general manager Harvey Smyl was awaiting more information before commenting.

ANNIS Brian
Brian Graham Annis passed away January 12, 2013 peacefully at home. Born in BurnaANNIS by, Brian lived in Chilliwack most of his life, growing up playing hockey, Jr. A and WHL. He was the tough guy. He worked with his father and mother at Annis Pools for many years, tough work but enjoyed the sun. Since then he worked in fire protection and construction of many types. Most recently M&M Excavating, the guys will miss 'Dad'. His vast knowledge made him indispensable in always getting things right. He was well respected in the community. He will be greatly missed by his entire family but especially his 'Girls' , wife Samantha Annis (Hughes), step mom Audree Annis, daughters Melissa Annis, Nicole Annis and Devan Annis and his five beautiful grandchildren Madison Harvey, Aiden Harvey, Kayel McLean, River McLean and Kaitlyn Brown. He's predeceased by his father Graham Annis and his mother Evelyn Annis (Watmough). He had a great many friends over the years, the kind of guy who would give you his shirt off his back if you needed it. Obituaries BERNDT Gertrude Emilie
Gertrude (Trudy) Berndt, surrounded by family, went to sleep peacefully on January 16, 2013 in the Chilliwack General HosBERNDT pital at the age of 85. She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family -- stepson, Bob (Char) Hack of Salmon Arm; daughter Betty (Henry) Chretien of Penticton; son John (Brenda) Hack of Oliver; daughter Shirley (Will) Van Esch of Sechelt; and daughter Gwen (Eric) Jansen of Chilliwack; brother Henry Gerber of Surrey; brother Willi Gerber of Aldergrove; niece Dorothy (Bob) of Killaly, Saskatchewan.  Also left to mourn her are -- grandchildren John (Ria), Bev (Vic), Kristina, Katie (Paul), Jennifer (Bud), Becky (Spencer), Felita (Gerry); Suzanne (Sakti), 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces and many Hack family inlaws.  Special to her heart was her youngest great-grandchild Jacob. Trudy was sadly predeceased by her husbands John Hack and Ed Berndt; her parents Jakob and Olga Gerber; sister Maria Hofmann; stepdaughter Elsa, son-in-law Ron and son Bobby. Trudy was born in Czernowitz, Romania, in 1929.  She survived WWII as a teenager in numerous displaced persons camps in Germany and then immigrated to Canada in 1951.  She married John Hack in Chilliwack and became mom and confidant to his two teenage children Elsa and Bob. In 1961Trudy, John and their two young children, Betty and John, welcomed Elsa’s (Ron) 3 children, Shirley, Bobby and Gwen, into their family. Later in life Trudy entered the work force as a Home Support Worker.  She was well loved by her clients and co-workers.  She enjoyed helping her friends and family, gardening and preserving, listening to music, taking pictures, admiring flowers and telling stories of her life. In her last years she greatly enjoyed the help of her Home Support ladies, the friendships of her NetCare family and of her apartment-block community. She spent her life demonstrating unconditional love to her family, friends and strangers. A Celebration of Life is planned for Sat, Feb 2nd, 2013 at 3 pm at the SeventhDay Adventist Church, 46024 Riverside Drive, Chilliwack, BC.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ‘NetCare Day Program--Life Enrichment Fund’ in support of this wonderful initiative at Parkholm Place—or charity of your choice. CLEAL Donald MacDonald
November 30, 1927January 16, 2013 Don was a lifelong avid outdoorsman and had a great respect for nature. He started logCLEAL ging at the age of 15 during WWII, growing into establishing his own logging contracting business. He spent his working time in the outdoors in the beauty of British Columbia. Don had a great empathy and generosity for all living things, especially animals. He was an avid gardener; one of his joys was growing vegetables for family, friends and the food bank. Don took great pride in his dahlias, which were extraordinary. Don was sociable and enjoyed weekly outings with his grandson Gavin, as well as playing bridge with friends. Don’s greatest pride, comfort and joy was his family. He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years Claudia, as well as his daughter Cindy. He will be deeply missed by daughter Dawn, and son-in-law Eric, son Don and daughter-inlaw Debbie. Also by grandchildren Derek, Erin, Laura, Craig, Evan, Deanndra, Jordan, Gavin, and great grandson Vadik. and also by his sister June and numerous other relatives. Darlien Rosanna Dulong, of Chilliwack, BC, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the age of 73, after a difficult battle with cancer. A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Chilliwack Fish & Game Hall at 48685 Chilliwack Lake Rd., Chilliwack. Darlien was born in Rossland, BC on December 27, 1939. She graduated from J.L. Crow High School and continued on to receive a Certified Dental Assistant Diploma from the University of Toronto. Darlien was married to Paul E. Dulong on October 8, 1966; they were married 28 years. Darlien worked as a Product Promotion Demonstrator for Save-On-Foods and Retail Resources for the last 15 years and retired in 2008. Darlien enjoyed culinary exploration, exploring the outdoors and flower arranging. Darlien was also actively involved in Scouts Canada with the 4th Chilliwack Scouting Group from 1983 through 1990. Darlien is survived by her son, Paul S. Dulong and his wife, Debbie Dulong, and other family and friends. Darlien is preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Ada Kavic and husband, Paul E. Dulong. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Canadian Cancer Society – BC & Yukon Chapter or The Arthritis Society – BC & Yukon Chapter. The family of Darlien Rosanna Dulong wishes to thank Dr. J. Boshoff, Family Physician, Dr. B. Keith, Oncologist, Dr. R. With deep sadness we announce the passing of our dad in Chilliwack, B.C,. Hans was born LAUFENBERG in Rauschendorf, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1959 with his wife Paula and two daughters. Settling in Victoria he worked at St. Michelle Winery until retirement. Dad sang for many years with the Killian Singers and in the choir of the German-Canadian club both in Victoria and Vancouver. He enjoyed many years of travel with his family. Dad leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Paula, daughters Annelene(Otto), Wilfriede(John), Astrid(Mike), 8 grandchildren and 9 greatgrandchildren. We will miss you Papa, and will hold many fond memories in our hearts.

SHERIDAN Lois Erna
Lois Erna Sheridan passed away January 15, 2013 in Chilliwack at the age of 54. SHERIDAN She was born February 3, 1958 in Chilliwack. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah and son, Robbie (Sarah); grandchildren, Shane, Athena, Aliya and Jacob. Lois also leaves her father Jake (Carla) Kouwenhoven; her siblings, Dick Kouwenhoven, Jan (Lindsay) McPhee, Michael (Marilyn) Kouwenhoven, Jacob (Rachael) Kouwenhoven and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Maartje Kouwenhoven and many aunts, uncles and other family members. Lois grew up a “Chilliwack� girl and lived a good life. She had many long time friends from her adventures. She recently had enjoyed her McDonald’s Coffee outings with Fred & Kendon. Lois worked as a Business Admin-
istrator for Thousand Trails for many years up at Cultus Lake and she also enjoyed working for Sardis Video Station and had her own housekeeping business. She was proud of her family, especially her grandkids! Golf, travelling and family were special to her. In July 2012, she was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease and had spent her final year with her sister Jan (Lindsay) at their home. She will be greatly missed! There will be visitation for friends on January 22, 2013 from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM at Henderson’s Funeral Home 45901 Victoria Ave. Chilliwack. WILLIAMS Jean Alberta
nee Pritchard Jean Alberta Williams (nee Pritchard) passed away on January 19, 2013 in Chilliwack, BC. She WILLIAMS was born in Edmonton on July 1, 1924. Jean is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, WILLIAMS Don, and by her children Gwynneth (David) O’Brien, Anne Williams (Kirk), Don (Wendy) Williams, Hugh (Leslie) Williams, grandchildren Joseph, Claire, Logan, Mac, Audrey and Jordan, her sister Marion Barnhouse, and her brother Jim Pritchard. One of eleven children, Jean grew up in Edmonton and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta. Jean and Don lived in Ghana, Trinidad, Botswana and Kenya for several years while Don worked for the Canadian International Development Agency and for CUSO. Jean was a loving and unselfish wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her retirement on Saltspring Island and Comox. Jean received very good care at Cascade Lodge during the last two years of her life. A graveside ceremony was held on January 15, 2013. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation.

Virginia Elaine Smith, born July 31, 1929 in Calgary Alberta. She passed away peacefully at Cascade Hospice located in Chilliwack B.C. on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the age of 83. Virginia is survived by her 4 children; Victor and Bev Smith of Hope, Dawn and Wayne Wort of Campbell River, Greg and Brenda Smith of Hope and Rory and Sandra Smith of Chilliwack, her brother Harold Buschlen of Kelowna, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Virginia raised her family and enjoyed life in Hope. She enjoyed gardening, traveling to Mexico and Hawaii, going to Mahood Lake and Loon Lake for Âżshing. Virginia had the great fortune to meet and work for Dr. Charles Lo in Hope, he welcomed her into his family and stayed in contact throughout her life. Virginia enjoyed baking treats and sharing them with many people in Hope. Virginia enjoyed meeting many of her friends in Hope while shopping or having lunch. After Virginia moved to Chilliwack in 2009 she met more friends and made a life for herself there. Virginia fought cancer 3 times and was able to win this battle twice in
her life; the 3rd battle was fought with courage and grace, taking her from us on a beautiful sunny morning. The family would like to thank Dr. Christie for many years of caring for Virginia’s health, Cascade Hospice and especially their staff for the care and dignity she had in her end of life journey. Virginia taught us all what courage, dignity and grace was through this journey.
