As Justice William Grist pronounced Jesse Blue West guilty of the first-degree murder of 14-yearold Chelsey Acorn, her mom let out a clap and a “Yes!” in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack on Monday morning. Family members supporting Lisa Acorn then cried and hugged one another in relief at the verdict which sees West, 60, receive an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years. Construction crews continue working on the Highstreet retail complex which should be completed by the end of the year. The first store, Walmart, is scheduled to open on Friday. The retail centre is built on different levels, with some stores located above an underground parking facility which consists of about 1,800 spaces. Kwiatkowski said they wanted to create a gateway to the city so it had to be a showpiece. According to Kwiatkowski, the shopping world is becoming two ends of a spectrum. One end is convenience and price, like Walmart, where the customer can get in and out quickly. The other end of the spectrum is a social experience. “People are shopping for entertainment. They’re meeting their friends, they’re shopping, they’re grabbing a coffee. So a more intimate, streetfront style, patios, is the other spectrum.” Usually those objectives are found in different places, but Highstreet has “found a way to do it in one place.”

The first store in the 20-acre, $200-million Highstreet retail development will open on Friday. The Walmart SuperCentre plans to celebrate its new 152,000-square-foot location with a ribboncutting at 7 a.m. and doors open at 8 a.m. Walmart store manager Brad Blankenagel said they don’t know how many people to expect on the first day, but it will be busy. The new SuperCentre is similar in size to the Port Coquitlam and Chilliwack stores, and larger than the current Abbotsford Walmart. Friday’s opening is the first of many phases that will occur in the coming year. Highstreet is located directly off Highway 1 at Mt. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on Jan. 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development. Even reading just 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically. In celebration of Family Literacy Day, Literacy Matters Abbotsford is holding its second annual Community Literacy Challenge, “Read What You Love.” It will run from Jan. 27-Feb. 16. Look for flyers in the community; there will be a reading log to complete which will be your entry into a draw for prizes. All you need to do is read for 15 minutes each day. The reading challenge is open to all ages. The kick-off for this event will be a free pancake breakfast Saturday, Jan. 26, hosted by the firefighters of the Clearbrook Fire Hall at 32270 George Ferguson Way. The breakfast will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Then visit the seventh annual Family Literacy Day Celebration at the Clearbrook Library and the Reach Gallery Museum after breakfast. Trees make way for church Resident protests loss of old evergreens Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Valerie Mills heard chainsaws around 9 a.m. on Friday and realized the trees across from the home she has lived in for 27 years were coming down. Surprised to see the 60-year-old trees being removed, she quickly made a sign and ran outside to protest. The sign reads ‘stop the death of the evergreens for our children.’ Mills stood outside in the cold from 10 a.m. until the afternoon, watching the trees fall. “I couldn’t sit by and do nothing,” she said. The trees, which are on the St. James Catholic Church property, are being taken down in order to build a new church. Douglas Fox, a

She understands the needs of the church, but wishes that trees could be incorporated into building plans. Though reaction to the loss of trees in her neighbourhood has been small, Mills felt the need to make her point. “There used to be many trees like this in Abbotsford. Now there are less and less.”

She told people she had a “medical crisis” involving her child. “In one instance she actually had a cellphone to her ear and she was pretending to be in a live conversation with the doctor,” explained MacDonald. She claimed her child, who was not with her, had been diagnosed with pneumonia, and she needed money to get medication for the child. “Unfortunately, we had a couple of people who did part with their money and then observed her quickly flee into a dark-coloured sedan, where there was somebody else waiting, and boom, they’re gone.” MacDonald said there is no sick child and the public should be aware.

Abbotsford Police are warning residents about a woman going door to door asking for money. Const. Ian MacDonald said it looks like an old scam has returned in a slightly different form. According to MacDonald, last summer there was a rash of complaints from people saying they had been approached in parking lots near bank machines by a woman in her early 30s who said she had a “crisis involving her child.” She then asked for money. On Monday, MacDonald said several new reports were received from a residential area in east Abbotsford regarding a woman, described to be 25-30, going door to door asking for money.

Police cars collide

Two Abbotsford Police cars collided last Monday, just before 11 p.m. on Fraser Highway, near Bradner Road. One of the officers was just leaving from a vehicle stop when the second car driving down Fraser Highway eastbound scraped the side of the police car. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the car veered away and ran into a barrier. There were minor injuries to both officers and minor damages to both cars.

Garbage can fire damages suite A fire broke out in an Abbotsford apartment last Wednesday night. At approximately 6:15 p.m. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded to a residential structure fire in a suite at 31790 Union Ave. The fire was reported by the building manager, who entered the suite after he heard a smoke alarm. He discovered smoke and flames and used the building’s fire alarm system to evacuate the apartment.

Seven fire vehicles and 30 firefighters attended. Fire and water damage was contained to the kitchen area with a damage estimate of $2,500. The cause of the fire is believed to be discarded smoking material in the garbage can.

‘Mr. Big’ brings down killers So-called “Mr. Big” stings have found increasing favour among police investigators for gaining convictions in serious criminal cases. Such was the case with the murder of Chelsey Acorn, a 14-year-old Abbotsford girl who ran afoul of a truly chilling father and son duo. Acorn went missing from her foster home on June 10, 2005. Her remains were found the following spring, in a shallow grave near the Coquihalla Highway near Hope. Taped confessions heard at the trials of Dustin Moir, now 27, and his father, Jesse West, suggested that the two men had strangled her, pushed her naked body into the hole they had dug, and then dropped a large rock on her head. Possible motives and other details of their heinous crime emerged as they confessed to a police officer posing as a crime boss. It’s a strategy that has taken down a number of killers and other criminals in recent years.

Critics of the tactic call it unreliable, primarily because some people – as West himself claimed – will tell lies to impress someone they think is a key crime figure, to reap the benefits after they’re accepted into the fold. Fabricated evidence is a possibility. However, careful investigation will usually sift out the truth, particularly when there is more than one accused telling the tales. And ultimately, there will be a judge and/or jury to weigh the evidence in the context of arguments by defence and Crown. It has been suggested that Mr. Big stings should be rejected by the courts. And if that were so, the killers of an innocent 14-year-old girl would still be on the streets, and possibly taking more victims. That is an utter absence of justice. That is not an option. Thanks to good police work, Moir and West got what they deserved – life in prison with no parole for 25 years.

Other Hand A recent visit to Home Hardware surprised me with the number of good old incandescent light bulbs on their shelves. I thought the federal government required they be phased out by the end of last year, forcing us all to use the much more energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). I didn’t think much about it as I stocked up. Then I read that, due to consumer concerns, the ban on incandescents has been put over until Jan. 1 of next year when 75- and 100-watters will be off the market, followed by 40- and 60-watt bulbs by Dec. 31, 2014. Obviously then, there’s still lots of time to pick up a few of the “old” bulbs before they are consigned to history. A few years ago I wrote about installing CFLs in my house, and the financial

gains achieved on my hydro bill. A lot of them still light parts of my house, though recently I noticed the CFL in one of my garage door openers worked only intermittently. Upon removing the offending ‘pig-tail,’ I noted a tiny burn mark where it connects to the energy source. The very large ceramic base on the CFL is too big for the fixture, and thus even when screwed in as tightly as possible, it either barely touched the electrical connection, or in fact was powered only by an arc between the two points. A fire hazard in the making, I determined, and in went a regular incandescent bulb. Problem solved, the light works as it should and an apparent hazard avoided. So, what to do with that now unnecessary CFL? They contain mercury so you can’t chuck ‘em in the trash. I knew Home Depot takes, and I assume recycles, all CFLs and fluorescent tubes, along with any and all batteries, so onto the work bench went the CFL until my next trip to the store. A day or two later, pulling out a drawer on the tool box, the CFL went rolling across the bench and shattered

in myriad shards. There went my best intention to recycle, and into the air went the offending mercury, hazardous trash no more. This got me to thinking about the other mercury-laced lights, the long fluorescent tubes that light many fixtures

Yet right now, Canada has no way of actually capturing that mercury, relying on facilities in the U.S. to recover it. in my garage, in the barn and even one in the kitchen. Safely disposing of burned-out tubes isn’t difficult for individuals, thanks to places like Regional Recycling on Riverside Road or Home Depot, but what do commercial operations do? There must be millions, perhaps tens of millions, of fluorescent tubes lighting retail, commercial and industrial buildings across this nation.

I hope, with all the dire warnings of mercury contamination and the extreme health hazard it poses, that they are also properly recycled, and will continue to be. Yet right now, Canada has no way of actually capturing that mercury, relying on facilities in the U.S. to recover it. And that, I understand, may soon come to an end as new importation bans south of the border will prevent us from exporting our toxic mercury waste. Perhaps while it is requiring all of us to get our houses in order, lighting-wise, that the federal government gets it own in order relating to effective safe recycling of mercury. It is a recognized toxin, with severe health implications. On the other hand, it wasn’t always regarded as such. I remember playing with little balls of mercury in high school science class. No warning (or understanding in those days) about its dangers, no order to wash our hands before eating lunch. And I won’t go into what we used to do with lead, either, or PCBs, but from what we know now, my generation should all be dead, or dealing with severe mental issues. Then again . . . .

Go-green people win

Why on earth we would recommend biweekly garbage collection. Who voted for this? Was there public consultation? The trucks are running weekly. Why would it matter that we can now put more composting out? The majority of people in the area I live in do not have composting to put out because we compost ourselves in our own yards. Who does this benefit? The city, because you are sending fewer trucks to the transfer station and thus not being charged as much. But us taxpayers are still paying the same and getting less service. Will we be able to put out larger containers like other municipalities, like Williams Lake, Quesnel, North Vancouver? No. Why? Because we haven’t invested any money or time into looking at that. Community Sustainability Planning Initiative Open House

The City of Abbotsford is holding an Open House on Thursday, January 24th, 2013, 6:30-8:30pm at the Clearbrook Library Meeting Room (32320 George Ferguson Way) to seek input from the community on the four current projects of the Community Sustainability Planning Initiative: • Community Sustainability Strategy; • Green Energy Plan; • Green Community Plan; and • Green Economic Investment Study. The Community Sustainability Strategy will become Abbotsford’s long-term vision and ‘road map’ for moving towards economic, environmental, social and fiscal sustainability. The Green Energy Plan will assist the implementation of Official Community Plan climate action policy by recommending strategies and actions to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The Green Community Plan will identify broad city-wide policies to support innovative green opportunities, to create an aesthetically pleasing community where the economy is prosperous, the environment and natural resources are carefully stewarded, and where residents enjoy a healthy and rewarding quality of life. cooling down after a short workout at Bear Creek Park in Surrey, also wants to rev up his social life. “I’ve been sitting in class far too long, so I just signed up for jiu-jitsu (a Japanese martial art) and ballroom dancing,” Duenas said. “I hope to meet new people outside the classroom.” For Sukhmani Pannu, also 23, getting in shape and staying in shape has become her goal for this year. She has already made some changes to the way she eats. “I found that I used to have a meal around 6:30 or 7 p.m. every night, but now I eat earlier, around 5 p.m. and then have a small salad.” The strategy seems to be working, Pannu said, as she’s already dropped 20 pounds. A recent poll of Lower Mainland residents, however, shows Duenas and Pannu may be in the minority. Results of an Ipsos Reid survey (commissioned by Fitness Town Surrey) released last month indicate just 14 per cent of people actually made New Year’s fitness-related resolutions last year. And of those who did, about two-thirds stuck to them. Those who abandoned their healthy plans listed lack of motivation, laziness,

and lack of time as their top reasons for abandoning their good intentions. When asked what would motivate them to continue with keep-fit resolutions, survey respondents said having more time would help, as would personal support from a trainer or nutritionist, or having someone to work out with. Other people said more money – to buy equipment or for a gym membership – might prompt them to exercise, as would a better schedule (such as a more flexible work timetable) or having a regular schedule or fitness program created for them. When asked how often they engage in sports or other exercise, just 20 per cent of poll respondents said they exercised between five and seven times a week, while 40 per cent said two to four times a week was average for them. About four per cent said they never exercise. Of those who do exercise, almost 70 per cent agreed they do so to lose weight. Also included in the survey results were questions about eating during the Christmas holidays. While 71 per cent admit they overindulged, 63 per cent said they felt guilty about it. Fifty-five per cent of those polled said they were inspired to get fit right before the holidays, an impulse that dropped by about 11 per cent during the holidays.

However, more than 73 per cent of respondents said they wanted to get fit right after the holiday season. For Pannu, it doesn’t matter what

the statistics show, she said she just wants to get healthy – and look good. “I want to be a fitness trainer, so I need to have a six-pack,” she said, laughing.

Fans who attended both ends of the Abbotsford Heat’s two-game home set with the Milwaukee Admirals likely felt a strong sense of déjà vu on Sunday. The Columbia Bible College men’s basketball team engineered perhaps the biggest upset win in program history on Saturday evening. Facing the Langara Falcons, the No. 1-ranked team in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA), on the road in Va n c o u v e r, the Bearcats pulled off a stunning 102100 victory. “It’s funny – it’s one of those things where it’s just a game, but it’s more than just a game,” said head coach Dave Martens, whose team moved into fourth place in the PacWest conference standings at 5-8. “It gives us some of that confidence that I think we’ve been missing.” In the wake of a 1-15 campaign in 2011-

12, Martens worked hard on the recruiting trail to boost the Bearcats’ talent level, but results were slow to materialize this season. The CBC men dropped eight of their first 11 games, and all three of their victories came in overtime. The Bearcats showed signs they might be turning the corner on Friday, when they beat the Douglas Royals 70-67 for their first win in regulation. But Saturday was the true breakthrough. Cascades stumble on road

Top-ranked women’s hoopsters fall to Calgary, Lethbridge Abbotsford News

The road was not kind to the University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams, as the Cascades women’s and men’s squads combined to go 0-for-4 on a weekend jaunt to Alberta. The UFV hoopsters suffered a sweep at the hands of the Calgary Dinos on Friday, the women falling 79-69 in overtime and the men losing 88-84. The Cascades’ misery was extended by the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday – the women dropped a 64-59 decision, while the men were edged 74-72. It was a particularly stunning turn of events for the UFV women’s squad, who were ranked No. 1 in the nation and had lost just one game in Canada West play all season. “You really wouldn’t have recognized our team at all,” head coach Al Tuchscherer said. “Two key things for us are, we’re pretty tough to score against and we share the ball. . . . But we didn’t do either of those things. “It was just a real individual mindset.” The Cascades managed to get to OT vs. Calgary, but the Dinos pulled away in the extra session. Jessica Franz (23 points, nine rebounds) and Megan Schaufele (19 points) set the pace for the Dinos, while Kayli Sartori (19 points) and Sarah Wierks (16 points, 15 rebounds) were the most productive Cascades. In Lethbridge, UFV led by eight heading to the fourth quarter, but the Pronghorns outscored them 25-12 in the final frame. The Cascades were miserable at the offensive end – they shot 26.7 per cent from the floor. The good news is, the Cascades still lead the Pacific Division at 11-3, and Tuchscherer is confident the weekend losses will serve to refocus his team. “We’re going to be fine – I think this will just galvanize things, more than anything,” he said. “I’ll go out on a limb and I’ll guarantee you we’ll finish the season strong.” n The No. 7-ranked Cascades men have had a tough go of it since Christmas – with star power for-

The Port Moody Black Panthers posed a stiffer test on the road on Saturday,

taking Abbotsford to overtime, but the Pilots prevailed on Dakota Schipper’s goal 1:44 into the extra session. It was Schipper’s second goal of the game.
