Generous donation The Quesnel Scandinavian Society continues to give generously to support patient care at GR Baker Memorial Hospital. A recent $20,000 donation will go toward the purchase of a portable Ultrasound unit. Ultrasound can help reduce the time it takes to diagnose and treat some health problems. Because the unit is portable, it can be used in various areas of the hospital, and by physicians at a patient’s bedside, for emergency assessments. This is the Scandinavian Society’s second major donation to GR Baker Memorial. Last year, a $50,000 donation went toward the purchase of orthoscopic equipment. Danika Hebert photo

Taseko Mines provides update on New Prosperity AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter It’s the largest undeveloped gold and copper mine in Canada – seventh in the world. Brian Battison of Gibraltar Mines presented Chamber of Commerce members with an overview of the mines’ productions and an

Battison first highlighted Gibraltar’s impact over the last five years: • $1.2 billion in total mine revenue. • $975 million in GDP generated for B.C. • $576 million increased in consumer spending.

SPCA presents year end report DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Tuesday night, the BCSPCA presented their operations report to the joint planning committee. The BCSPCA’s mission is “to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia.” Their vision statement is to “inspire and mobilize society to create a world in which all animals enjoy, as minimum, five essential freedoms.” These freedoms are: • Freedom from hunger and thirst; • Freedom from pain, injury and disease; • Freedom from distress;

• Freedom from discomfort; • Freedom to express behaviours that promote well-being. The SPCA reported their figures to the joint planning committee, which showed a slight decrease in number of animals coming into the facility, dropping from 816 in 2011 to 801 in 2012. The Quesnel and District SPCA also showed a decrease in adoptions, 548 animals were adopted in 2011 and 515 in 2012. The SPCA received 100 separate calls about complaints of animal cruelty, of which 79 required investigation by their cruelty department. In terms of community outreach, the Quesnel and District SPCA worked with the Seasons House, Salvation Army and set up educational

booths. Youth involvement is important to the SPCA and in 2012, they held classroom presentations, worked with the girl guides and held a summer camp for kids. 2012 saw the SPCA holding their annual Paws for a Cause event, at which they raised $2595.30. Although they raised some money, the SPCA is still facing deficit. In 2010, they ran at a $42,852 deficit, in AaN$85,166 D DEC OR 2011 they saw operating deficit and in 2012, the SPCA faced an estimated $105,000 operating deficit. You’ll feel like you’re in paradise DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Helen Demarchant has opened her spa, Celeste Paradis, pursuing an interest she’s had for a long time. “I’ve always been interested in spa treatments,” Demarchant said. Having taken some courses in business, Demarchant decided that wasn’t for her and took some training in Vancouver in different massage techniques instead. “I do have business training, so this combines both aspects,” she explained. “I get to use my business knowledge while doing what I love.” Demarchant specializes in Thai massage, an ancient technique which is believed to be medicinal and is thought to treat several ailments. Thai massage is a series of rhythmic pressing and stretching of the entire body, usually following the body’s Sen lines, meridians in the body which are thought of in Thai tradition to be energy carriers. Demarchant also offers hot stone as part of every massage at no extra charge. “I think I have the best prices in Quesnel,” Demarchant said. “I’m not in this business to get rich. “I’m here to cater to people who might otherwise not be able to afford these sort of spa services.” In addition to offering low prices, Demarchant has committed to donating $2 from every gift certificate purchased and massage booked to the Women’s Resource Centre. “They do important work in the community and have helped me so I thought it would be a good thing to be able to give back,” she explained. When she’s not at the spa, Demarchant loves spending time with her family and hanging out at her farm. Demarchant only serves one client at a time, ensuring a comfortable and personal Adopt a Shelter Cat!

Prosperity will benefit First Nations: Battison from front

“Now we want to build another mine – Prosperity,” he said. “At the heart of that plan is a $300 million commitment to mitigate environmental impacts.” The environmental impact statement, submitted to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency in Oct of 2012, details a commitment to protect Fish Lake, mitigate impacts to the environment and address First Nations concerns. “Taseko sought out global experts to ensure there was no significant adverse environmental effects,” he said. Battison said that statement includes no significant effects to a number of issues, including, air quality, terrain and soil, habitat, vegetation, fish life, water quality and human health. Battison said if Prosperity is approved the real GDP will increase by $11 billion,

“New Prosperity has the potential to generate $300 – 400 million in mineral tax for First Nations under the Provincial Revenue Sharing for First Nations program.” Brian Battison, Taseko Mines

adding another 57,000 gainfully employed people over the mines 20-year life span. In addition, he said, the federal governments revenue will rise by $4.30 billion; the province’s revenue will rise by $5.52 billion; consumer spending will increase by $9 billion; production revenue will increase in excess of $11 billion; residential investment will rise by $786 million; non-residential construction investment will increase by $1.03 billion; investment in

machines and equipment [by others] will increase by $1.38 billion and B.C.’s population is expected to increase by 5,400. Battison spoke to concerns of First Nations, but said Taseko believes New Prosperity will “dramatically benefit First Nations.” “The mine represents local opportunity for jobs, training, business development and community benefit,” he said. “New Prosperity has the potential to generate $300 – $400 million in mineral tax for First Nations under the Provincial Revenue Sharing for First Nations program.” Next steps include a federal review of the Environmental Impact Statement, a panel to conduct public hearings and write a report and the environment minister and cabinet decision. Provincial requirements include emanating the existing environmental assessment certificate. No dates have yet been slated for public hearings.

The world didn’t end

We need to listen to the scientists and learn from the past

W

ell, we reached 2013 so I hereby congratulate the survivors of the end of the world. The Mayan prediction was wrong as were the Jehovah Witness predictions in the past. There is always a possibility that a very large meteorite will hit our planet, but apart from that I don’t think that any religion or spiritual movement can foresee that moment in time when and if it will happen. There is a good possibility the world as we know it will change beyond recognition if humanity does not change its ways and that is more realistic than believing the Mayan calendar or religious and spiritual beliefs about the end of the world. The almost unbelievable advance of the science related to space exploration makes it possible to

Bert deVink

FROM WITHIN detect a meteorite of a size that will destroy or damage our planet severely and that is not a prophecy. There are now telescopes in space that can see a star 3.1 billion light years away. I can’t even imagine the speed of light, let alone the distance involved in a year. It’s miraculous when we look at that star now, we are looking at something that happened 3.1 billion light years ago. For a guy born at the tail end of the horse and buggy era, the immense progress in science is astounding. When the first astronauts landed on the moon I felt

cheated because the moon was something mysterious and romantic, but now I drive around with a GPS in my car that will guide me via a satellite in space. What perplexes me is that we trust the scientists with the majority of all the technological advances we are using, except the scientists who warn us about the consequences of the pollution and destruction we cause on this planet. It is not that the predictions of these scientists have not come true so far. The earth is warming, the polar

ice and glaciers are melting, the velocity and amount of storms is increasing, a large amount of the oceans, lakes and rivers are polluted, the ocean level is rising and every day species of plants and wild life are disappearing forever. Yet most of the world news is about money, depression and wars. Wall street and the banks are still operating as usual with very little or no change since the last financial disaster. We live in a province bordered by the ocean, but seafood is imported from China and so is half or more

of the stuff on the store shelves. It was not that long ago that the Canadian government chastised China for its human rights record, but that does not seem to matter anymore. After the industrial revolution in the early 1900’s there was a world wide recession followed by the 1914 – 1918 world war. In the early 1930’s there was a world wide recession followed by the 1939 – 1945 world war. It looks like we are again floundering towards a recession with a good possibility of another war. A GLIMPSE OF HISTORY 50 YEARS AGO January 10, 1963 Mayor Proposes Plebiscite on Fluoridation of water “Mayor A.V. Fraser strongly recommended that Town council investigate fluoridation of Quesnel’s water supply without further delay in 1963, in his inaugural address last Monday night. “to delay,” he explained, “was being unfair to the children of this community.” In addition he urged that a plebiscite to the ratepayers be slated in December in order to either bring fluoridation into effect or reject it. “I do not believe our citizens will reject it when they know all the facts. The Mayor then submitted a provisional budget for 1963 with an estimated record expenditure of $725,000. This budget was tabled for acceptance January 21, preparatory to the final budget being drawn up.” This Column is to highlight our 50th Anniversary

What to make of Idle No More I have mixed feelings about the Idle No More protests. There are growing divisions within the First Nations leadership, and there has always been a lack of clarity about how best to address First Nations’ poverty and unresolved rights and title claims. However, we must be very careful not to judge these protests too quickly or too harshly. The freedom to protest is a key tenet of a healthy democracy. While we might be inconvenienced by protests or even disagree with the reasons behind them, it’s important to remember that the freedom to protest is a fundamental democratic right we need to protect. We must take care that our impatience with the personal inconvenience public protests may create does not enable our government to exercise authoritarian control over our freedom to express ourselves. The Idle No More protests have been a long time coming. They are the result of increasing frustration with treaty processes that are set up to fail, an Indian Act that maintains a paternalistic relationship with First Nations, and the development of natural resources that continue to have unresolved ownership claims. Our federal and provincial governments pay lip service to resolving these long-standing issues, but their focus on accelerating the development of Canada’s and BC’s natural resources has brought the issue of resource title and benefit sharing to a head. In the absence of consultation processes that work, clarity of ownership over these resources, and equitable sharing of the benefits of resource development, First Nations’ frustrations have grown to the point that they feel compelled to take to the streets. When the treaty table doesn’t work, when the government won’t resolve long-standing legal rights issues, and when companies and the government make money from natural resources to which they don’t have clear title, what is left for First Nations to do but disrupt the status quo to force action on these issues? The courts have said these issues must be resolved. The investment community has said these issues must be resolved. But federal and provincial political leaders continue to address First Nations issues with little more than empty talk. Instead of grumbling about the inconvenience these protests create, if we take the time to educate ourselves about these issues and join the call for reform, then maybe this time our political leaders will finally start doing the hard work of resolving these complex issues once and for all.

The world needs to wake up and save the planet from A6 It is strange that during both recessions all the means to maintain an economy were there, but most of the fishing fleets lay idle, all the products to run factories were there but factories were closed, farmers dug ditches to bury their cows, people lost their houses and small business owners lost their businesses. All that because there was no money to maintain the economy.

My question is: where did the billions and billions to start a war come from when there was no money to maintain the existing economy? I don’t think we have to look too far to find the answer because the very rich are already running from their homeland to countries with a low or tax-free haven. It is not a new phenomena; Paul Martin is an example, the former Prime Minister of Canada had his ocean-going

fleet head office located in the Bahamas. This type of anti-social and unscrupulous behaviour by the very rich, with their large corporations and the power they have gained over governments, is the basic root of the, now worldwide, problems. The world’s population is becoming aware of that and lets hope change will occur without blood shed. Bert deVink is a long-time Observer contributor.

T

he NHL is back in business. After five months of sportscasts that sounded more like business reports as owners and players argued their cases for the protracted labour dispute that kept arenas dark, teams returned to the ice to prepare for a truncated season that begins on Saturday. Some teams are trying to make amends, to salve the wounds that three difficult lockouts in 19 years have wrought on ticket-buying fans. The Vancouver Canucks are cutting prices at their concessions and giving away the jerseys their players will wear in their home opener. The Edmonton Oilers held their first practice on a frozen pond, using Twitter and Facebook to alert fans. Canadians generally, and hockey fans in particular, are pretty forgiving. It’s likely the arenas in the NHL’s six Canadian cities will be just as full and noisy had the season been at its proper midway point. Those who can’t get a ticket, or afford one, will be tuned in to Hockey Night in Canada, a Saturday night TV tradition for more than 60 years. By the time the race for the Stanley Cup playoffs heats up in earnest, say in two weeks, most fans will probably have forgotten there was a lockout in the first place. Especially in Toronto. After all, their team might already have been out of it had the season started on schedule last October. It’s hard for the average working person to relate to a labour dispute between billionaire owners and employees who earn millions of dollars. There were never any picket lines set up outside those glittering arenas, many of them built with help from taxpayer money. Locked-out players never huddled around fire barrels to stay warm, worrying about how their strike pay will cover the rent. Perhaps both sides should pause and think about that the next time they threaten to put hockey on hold. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

Not so much the life of the party M y husband turned 50 last week and I threw him a

party. I’m not particularly good at that kind of thing. In fact, it had been so long since I planned a shindig for grownups that I forgot why I didn’t like it. To my surprise, I actually started getting excited about the event in the weeks leading up to it. I had fun ordering the cake, the giant card, the food, the DJ, the decorations, the customized bobblehead and picking up the most beautiful dining room table made out of 100-year-old barn wood that I’d commissioned for him months before. What was less fun was that feeling of responsibility for everyone’s enjoyment the night of the celebration. The sight of any lone person or couple not mingling caused me stress and I felt frustrated that I was unable to talk to everyone as much as I

On A Brighter Note wanted to. I tried to shake off those feelings because I knew they didn’t make sense. When I go to a party I don’t expect the host to introduce me to everyone or hang out with me all night. I hardly expect to see much of them at all. But, as it turns out, my anxieties didn’t stop there. I also managed to get a wicked cold that same day, developed a pounding headache as the night progressed and became even more forgetful than usual. Despite the fact that people seemed to be having a good time and the party didn’t end for some of them

the responsibility of other people’s level of enjoyment. He simply relaxed and had a great time himself. If only I could be more like him. In our 19th year together, he’s still teaching me a thing or two about what’s truly important and hosting the perfect party isn’t one of them. What’s paramount for him are his beloved children, his wonderful family, his loyal friends and living the happiest, most fulfilling life he can. He’s not the type to get hung up on petty details. When he does something, he does his best, kicks back and lets it go. “I want to be more like you when I grow up,” I’ll often tell him. Only four years his junior, I’d better hurry the heck up. until 4:30 in the morning, I kept thinking about what I could have done better. As I lay in bed trying desperately to fall asleep, I started mentally listing off the things I should have remembered or done differently. “It was perfect exactly the way it was,” Paul said when he realized I was beating myself up. “No one’s ever thrown a party like that for me before. I had a blast!” And, really, that’s what mattered most. Of course I wanted everyone to have fun and I wanted everything to go as planned, but if he hadn’t enjoyed the night, none of it would have been worth it. Editor: I am writing on behalf of the Quesnel and District Community Arts Council (QDCAC), who will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary with an event at the Quesel and District Community Arts & Recreation Centre Feb. 16, 1 – 4 p.m. The current Council would very much like to invite all past presidents to the event, but are currently unable to locate three of these individuals. We were hoping that

your readers may be able to help us out in this regard. The past presidents that we are seeking contact information for are: Brenda Smith who was the acting president for the 1976/77 year; Doug Jones who was the president from 1977 through 1979; and Marion deZwart who was the president for 1984/85. Anyone with information can contact me by email at betty. watson@me.com, or by

fax, 250-992-3453 or by telephone, 250-992-3452. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. There will be entertainment, demonstrations and hands-on activities by our member groups. Nibbles and nonalcoholic beverages will be provided and we even have door prizes! Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all on Feb. 16! Betty Watson Secretary, QDCAC

Clean up your crap Editor: Friday I took my dog in West Fraser Timber park. The town had just plowed the path. There already were piles of dog crap not 10 feet from the free bags and garbage can. People think because it’s biodegradable that dog crap isn’t a problem, but a parent with kids on a toboggan or just playing in the snow has to go through it.

In the summer the workers with weed eaters have dog crap flying in their faces. I had to pick up a big pile of someone else’s mess from right in the playground because I was ashamed to be walking my dog. All the dogs are going to be banned from the park if people don’t start cleaning up. Your dog crap, your responsibility. Leslie Trombley Quesnel

Auditor offered two-year extension TOM FLETCHER Black Press

Premier Christy Clark wants to amend the Auditor General Act to offer John Doyle a twoyear extension of his term, due to end this year. Clark told a news conference in Vancouver Wednesday that she has asked the three B.C. Liberal MLAs on the selection committee to offer the extension to Doyle, as they prepared to meet Wednesday with the two NDP MLAs on the committee. Clark said the amendments would change the B.C. auditorgeneral’s term to a non-renewable eight-year term to avoid controversy as politicians vote on their own financial watchdog. The move is patterned after the federal government, which appoints auditors-general to a single 10-year term. NDP leader Adrian Dix has said his caucus was unanimous in seeking Doyle’s reap-

pointment. Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake Jan. 20, 2012, after dry wood dust exploded and caused a fire that killed two employees and injured 20 others. A similar fatal explosion and fire struck a Prince George mill in April.

New safety rules set for sawmills

TOM FLETCHER Black Press The B.C. Safety Authority has made a series of recommendations aimed at preventing another mill dust explosion like the ones that killed four workers in two separate incidents last winter. The changes are intended to cover pellet plants and other wood processing facilities as well as sawmills. Researchers compared the explosion hazard of different kinds of dust, finding wood “flour” can be a more powerful explosive than coal dust when it is dry and exposed to an ignition source. Two workers died and 20 others were injured when an explosion and fire tore through the Babine Forest Products sawmill in Burns Lake on Jan. 20, 2012. On April 23, a similar explosion killed two workers and injured 22 more at Lakeland Mills in Prince George. Investigators ruled out nat-

ural gas, oil and other fuel sources, leaving fine, dry dust produced from milling wood. WorksafeBC concluded that the likely ignition source was hot electric motor and gear reducer equipment running wood waste conveyors in low, confined areas of the mills. Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad said the BCSA team has worked with the industry and employees to develop new rules, some of which use techniques developed in underground coal mining. The recommendations call for changes to the layout of mills so hot equipment is easier to keep clean and is separated from sources of dust. “I think this will be very positive for the workers, who I know have been very worried about what happened, both at Babine and at Lakeland,” Rustad said. “The authority is looking to do a 60-day consultation period with industry to meet those

standards and will then ask industry to bring forward an implementation plan for each of their facilities by mid-June.” Babine Forest Products issued a statement Tuesday, saying it supports the direction of the recommendations. “Consistent with the BCSA recommendations, the new Babine sawmill will contain state-of-the-art equipment and systems to collect wood dust at the machine source,” the statement said. “It will have equipment, building and floor plans designed to facilitate clean-up and reduce areas where wood dust can accumulate.” Company officials declined further comment, as Crown prosecutors continue their review to see if the incidents warrant charges against the companies or individuals under the Workers Compensation Act. Negligence and other criminal charges were ruled out after an earlier police investigation.

TELUS manager Rod Peck, left hands over a $1,000 cheque to Friendship Centre executive director Sandy Brunton for youth programming. The funds were from the TELUS Community Action Team. Brunton said they will probably apply the money to assist youth who are fundraising to attend the National Aboriginal Conference Gathering Our Voices to be held in Penticton in March. The youth fundraise to cover the cost to attend and fundraising events are being planned. The public is encouraged to participate in these fundraisers. Annie Gallant photo

Time to check your cognitive skills SAS offering touch-screen awareness

ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter It’s been four months since Seniors Advocacy Service began offering Touch Screen Computer Awareness and already several people have taken advantage of the service. Designed to assist people either booked for the Drive Able Assessment or those wanting to be prepared should they be required to take the assessment. So far Lyle Orchison, principle presenter of the program, has assisted 15 people with two sessions each. The first session familiarizes the client with the touch screen and finger pad. “Clients tend to be a little anxious and nervous,” Orchison said. “Most have no computer experience at all and even

those with some computer experience, it doesn’t usually include touch screen technology.” He said they introduce the technology through playing games which test for various cognitive competencies all the while having fun. “After a couple of tries, most are much more comfortable with the technology,” he said. The second session, which is booked within two weeks of the first, the client reviews the DriveAble practice session which covered the six assessment tasks including: motor speed and control; span of attention field; spatial judgement and decision making; speed of attentional shifting; executive functioning (verbal instruction); and identification of driving situations. “The beauty of this

program is we can stop and review at any time,” Orchison said. “The video isn’t interactive so once they understand what is expected in each task, we return to the games computer module and further enhance their touch screen skills.” DriveAble’s in-office assessment tool is a science-based driving evaluation designed to identify at-risk drivers, regardless of age. A recommendation for the assessment may come from a person’s family physician, concerned family members or others. Often the family physician, who is usually visited one or more times a year by patients, are likely to be the first person in authority to encounter a driver who has become medically impaired. It’s recommended that physicians notify licensing

bodies of concern regarding competence to drive. Physicians can administer a SIMARD ND screening test which can help identify if the patient needs to be reported to the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and a subsequent DriveAble Assessment. At a recent Council of Senior Citizens Organizations (COSCO) conference, Orchison reviewed statistics which suggest that of the letters sent to 80 years plus individuals, only two per cent were further referred to DriveAble Assessment. “Just turning 80 doesn’t automatically send you to DriveAble,” he added. Anyone interested in the free, touch screen program or to book an appointment for your two sessions call 250-747-8363, leave a message and someone will call you back.

ace to the Polar Sea, written by Ken McGoogan and published by Harper Collins Ltd. in 2008 is an amazing book produced after extensive research through long forgotten journals and records and written by a very skilled story teller. In 1850 – 1855, about the time of the Cariboo gold rush and Darwin’s thesis on evolution, there was an intense curiosity about the earth’s poles and especially a northwest passage. Sir John Franklin, in April 1845, sailed into the Arctic with two ships, in his final expedition, to find the elusive shorter Andy Motherwell route to the Historical Footnotes Orient. He disappeared and by 1850 many had tried to find Franklin – many paid the final price. Elisha Kent Kane, a medical doctor and son of a wealthy Philadelphian, led two expeditions to the Arctic after an astonishing life of adventure in Brazil, China, Africa and Mexico, all while frequently in poor health. At one point he had been lowered into the core of a volcano in the Phillipines – barely escaping with his life. Encountering the slave trade in Africa, he became an abolitionist and in 1861 the American Civil War started, while our gold rush exploded. At that time, there was a popular belief in an open north polar sea which lasted for several years and many believed Franklin might be trapped there. European and North American explorers were not adapted to ice conditions but the most successful, including Kane, learned to adopt the “Eskimo” lifestyle and survived – Kane with two years trapped in the ice. In 1850 he stood at the three graves of Franklin’s crew on Beechey Island and determined to find survivors and a passage. He was a hero when he successfully returned after suffering starvation, scurvy and desertion. In 1856 he published a book about the expedition. He died Feb. 16, 1857 in Havana, leaving a will but having a tangled love affair meant his wishes were not carried out. He left an invaluable record of the Arctic in sketches and journals, “as it was” before global warming. Our fascination with the poles continues and this book is a valuable source of new information. Deck: or how I instigated then overcame an existential crisis through home improvement

Deck is theatre presented as never before with a story where the backdrop is the world financial crisis, personal angst and the exploding societal craze of home improvement. Quesnel Live Arts presents The Deck Jan. 23 in Chuck Mobley Theatre, with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Based loosely on the writer/ performer Lucas Myers’ own personal experience with home improvement, Deck chronicles one man’s efforts to come to grips with his own inadequacies and flaws. Deck examines the fine line between perfectionism and obsession, chaos and freedom and why a

piece of 2x6 lumber isn’t really two inches by six inches. Not even close. Deck stars Cliv, a meticulous single parent of two who has been forced to reassess his future after taking major losses in the recent recession. He embraces a new start as a small town, eco-conscious, back-to-the-lander. His attempts at self-sufficiency are hijacked by a bad house buy and he is forced to try his hand at home improvement. Enter Andreas, the charismatic carpenter who takes Cliv under his wing and offers to lend a hand. As Cliv is drawn into Andreas’ world of free wheeling free living, Cliv

APPRENTICE WIRELESS TECHNICIAN

begins to lose his grasp on reality and is consumed by suspicions of Andreas’ true motives. Deck is a darkly hilarious take on the modern milieu of a small town, semiurban environment. The stage becomes littered with actual lumber, power tools and invited audience members who are asked to help build the deck. Be prepared for the whine of chain saws and the sound of construction. In Myers own words, “Cliv was born a neurotic, highly cerebral desk jockey trying desperately to go to seed. This is a

character who is highly motivated to embrace the backto-the-land lifestyle which he is obviously not cut out for.” Myers admits one of his personal mandates is to try and expand the audience for theatre and having posters and info about the show at home improvement stores just might draw in those guys and show them theatre can be a compelling experience. He draws on his broad-based theatrical experience and skills to create this one-man show and has been performing to enthusiastic audiences.

Boxing club in search of new venue

Rumbles outgrow Bouchie Lake; have trouble finding new home JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Having outgrown the Bouchie Lake Hall and their old home, the Seniors’ Centre, no longer an option, the 2 Rivers Boxing Club is currently searching for a new venue. Two years ago, the 2 Rivers Boxing Club held their last rumble at the Seniors’ Centre. The centre’s president, Rae Daggit said the the centre created a ban against erecting forms in response to the damage the ring did to the floor.

Damages were paid to the centre to fix the floor. The boxing club then moved to Bouchie Lake, where they have held competitions ever since. Though Coach Wally Doern and the club have felt at home at the hall, the club’s events are becoming too big, resulting in a crowded house. The distance to the hall is also somewhat prohibitive for parents of the boxers, Doern and the fans. To alleviate these problems, Doern has been casting about for new places to host a bigger event and have it a bit closer to home. The problem began in 2011 when the Seniors’ Centre passed a motion to ban events which ‘require any form of large equipment set up on the floor.’ Daggit said the group has spent a lot of money to create a great venue and doesn’t want to allow groups in who, they feel, will do damage to the building. Doern said it was the first time the ring had caused any damage to the floor, saying that some younger volunteers, who shouldn’t have been helping, were trying to carry pieces of the ring that were too heavy for them and dropped them, damaging the floor. The first incident happened during the initial run of events Doern put on at the hall. After

“The money generated by the club goes back to the club and stays in the community. We’re not a country band that fills our pockets and leaves town.” Wally Doern, 2 Rivers Boxing Club coach

hosting two events elsewhere, Doern decided to bring his third ‘rumble’ to the Seniors’ Centre in 1999. For about five years, during which he remembers hosting 10 one-day events and four two-day provincial events, Doern held his bouts at the Seniors’ Centre. During an early rumble, ‘ZZ Top’ was scrawled on a bathroom door by an attendee, a problem which snowballed when Doern and the painter he hired mis-communicated, which ended in an unsatisfactory paint job that required all the stalls in the bathroom be re-painted. The stalls were repainted in a similar hue, but not with the baked-on enamel the stalls had previously been painted with because it would have been an an expense Doern could not afford. In 2004 Doern took five years off from coaching, coming back in 2009, during which time the

executive at the Seniors’ Centre once had his back, the one he changed. It was a year later, at has worked with for such a Rumble 14, actually thirteen long time, has left him out in (the jump was, ironically, to the cold, while acts that roll avoid that dreaded unlucky through town are welcomed. number), that the floor was “The money generated by the damaged. club goes back to the club and After the damage, Doern stays in the community,” he said appealed to the executive “We’re not a country band to allow him back, but they that fills our pockets and leaves decided to ban all acts that town.” included set-up equipment. Daggit also told Doern that See PAGE A21 his security was lacking during his last event, saying there was no one watching the door so people, with or without tickets, could wander in at will even if they just wanted to use the washroom. “If I want to let someone in for nothing, I’ll let them in; that’s our show,” Doern said. “There’s no alcohol at the show and we’ve never had any behavioral problems at the show.” Doern treasures the awards and recognitions he has from the city and is happy to be a Left; A flyer for an early event at the Senior’s positive force in the Centre. Getting in on the action with their first goals of the season were George (John, Ringo) Paul with a pair and (Mad) Mike Ingram with the all important Ocho marker. Continuing

duo of (Silent) Seth Phillips and Scott (Little Softy) Fairless combined for two goals and three assists from their rear guard positions. Scoring in his second consecutive game for Fraser River after a dozen with zero, was Budd (Crash) Carter who was one of the few GM players relishing their 58 minutes of ice time. Nobody believed BCS was as bad as their record showed and now is the time for them to prove it as a 4-3 victory over Bear gives them a share of third place with a Builder Bunch who are trending in the opposite direction. Cole Slaney, who plays defence on the bantam Thunder was placed on the preliminary rankings for the Minor Hockey Player of the Year Award in late December. The award goes to the B.C. minor hockey player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, leadership, hockey ability and performance and school and community participation.

From A19 The Seniors’ Centre executive sees the centre as a poor fit for a boxing venue to begin with, preferring to host concerts and large scale get togethers as opposed to sporting events that may cause damage. “It’s just not conducive to the building, to what we want to do,” Daggit said, adding later, “We have a lot of decoration, a lot of nice stuff and we want to keep this hall as a first class venue in town.” Dwaine Sauve, a long time member of the community and a donor to both the boxing club and the Seniors’ Centre in it’s fledging stage envisions the Seniors’ Centre as a place that should be helping the community, saying he supports the boxing club because it gives underprivileged children and young adults, who can’t afford a sport like hockey, a place to go. “I think the Seniors’ Centre was built to serve the community and the people and it should be rented out if for no other reason to help the kids,” he said. He maintains that supporting clubs like these will help the community in the long run and the community needs to work to make that happen or no one will. Currently the club is exploring opportunities to host events at Correlieu among other possibilities. The Twin Arenas are not being considered because Doern fears the required temperature to keep the ice cold will be unpleasant for his boxers, clothed only in shorts as they are. Though Doern is hoping to find a new home for the next rumble, he is keeping his eye on the Bouchie Lake Hall as back up.
